Lisan al-Gaib! Sandworm-riding isn’t a feature in Dune: Awakening, but players are doing it anyway

Sandworm-riding isn’t part of Dune: Awakening, at launch, anyway. As creative director Joel Bylos told Eurogamer last year, Funcom looked into it but decided the technical cost was too steep and “it needs a purpose.” In the movies, sandworms are ridden through the otherwise impassable southern sandstorms and used to attack Arrakeen. You don’t do either of those things in Dune: Awakening, at least not yet.

So sandworm-riding isn’t an official feature—but some very brave Dune: Awakening players are doing it anyway. Just take a look at this amazing clip SgtDolphin posted to reddit:

If you haven’t played Dune: Awakening, you might be wondering: what’s with the super-sprint and long jump? Well, SgtDolphin appears to be using a combination of skills and gear to leap safely over the sandworm’s gaping maw and onto its back.

There’s a Bene Gerrerit ability called Bindu Sprint that lets you go zipping around at high speeds like The Flash, great for crossing dangerous desert zones quickly and escaping from combat situations when they go wrong. Also good for quickly getting over to a stampeding sandworm.

The wormrider also has some suspensor gear equipped, which allows them to levitate: leap modules or a gadget called Emperor’s Wings will let you glide slowly through the air—or zoom around like a rocket if you’ve used a grappling hook or a Bindu Sprint first.

Riding the Sandworm from r/duneawakening

Obviously you can’t steer the worm the way Paul and the Fremen riders do in the movie, but it sure shows the possibilities in a game where it’s not actually a feature.

Not to brag, but I did a tiny bit of wormriding myself. Unintentionally. I was driving across the desert not paying close attention and a worm crossed right in front of me, and my sandbike’s treads briefly touched the sandworm’s back—at which point I squealed in fear, turned around as fast as I could, and hit the boosters until I was back on safe ground again.

That’s as close as I care to get. I’ll leave the actual worm riding to the professionals.

Dune Awakening base building guide: Best locations and design tips

Arrakis is a harsh and unforgiving place, but that doesn’t mean you can’t carve out a small corner of the sands and create a nice little home for yourself. Building a base in Dune: Awakening is the key to surviving the sands, but there are a few additional restrictions to keep in mind compared to other survival games.

A base not only shelters you from the harsh desert heat and deadly sandstorms, but also gives you a place to refine raw materials and create clean drinking water. Bases are somewhat disposable in Dune: Awakening, though, so sometimes it’s best to abandon your humble abode to create a foothold in a different region of the desert. Don’t think of your first few bases as forever homes: as you progress you’ll be able to build bigger, cooler, and better-located bases to return to at night.

Best Dune: Awakening base locations

You’re free to build a base anywhere in the desert in Dune: Awakening, but some locations are much more advantageous than others. The game guides you through the creation of your first base, but after that, you should take some time to really think about the best places to settle down.

The best early-game Dune: Awakening base location is near the Tradepost in Hagga Basin South. Building on the rocky areas below the Tradepost will keep you safe from sandworms, and you’ll only be a few hundred meters away from a few moisture-sealed caves, a shipwreck, and an Imperial Testing Station. Just get used to the idea of having neighbors: most likely you’re going to see a lot of other boxy beginner bases nearby.

This is hands down the best place for new players to stock up on key resources and get some easy XP to kickstart the research process. You’ll only need to venture out to get materials that can only be found in other regions. This base will take care of all your basic needs so you can focus on finishing the first set of main story quests. Most of the advanced blueprints are locked behind quest progression, anyway, so simple is better at this stage of the game.

The best overall base location in Dune: Awakening is located in Jabal Eifrit Al-Janub. You’ll unlock this region after completing the first few main story quests and zooming north on your sandbike to Vermillius Gap. Once you reach Vermillius Gap, you’ll hear from Zantara one last time before he leaves you to your own devices. You’re then free to explore Arrakis as you see fit, and Jabal Eifrit Al-Janub should be your first stop.

This spot is prime real estate for your base. It’s near an Imperial Testing Station, a shipwreck, and some moisture-sealed caves so you’ll never have a shortage of rare materials or Fremen resources. There are also several Carbon Ore deposits nearby, plus other metals for good measure. To top things off, the nearest Tradepost is just a short sandbike ride south.

You can set up other outposts across the desert, but Jabal Eifrit Al-Janub is the perfect spot for your main base since it’s a central location where you can easily access everything you need. It’s safe enough for a permanent setup, and there are enough basic resources in the surrounding area to ensure you can always craft the essentials. Again, you’ll probably have neighbors, so practice your spice casserole recipe.

Dune: Awakening base building tips

No matter where you choose to build your base in Dune: Awakening, there are a few key things to remember.

Keep it simple

Most important: Keep things compact. Unless you’re planning on permanently settling down in an area with your group, don’t waste time building extravagant hideouts with multiple floors and rooms. You only need room for the basic crafting stations like a Blood Purifier and an Ore Refinery. Keep things as simple as possible so you can pack up and move later down the line.

Establish outposts

Don’t be afraid to use all of your available Sub-Fiefs! You get multiple base slots as you research more stuff in Dune: Awakening. Use those extra slots to establish small outposts in regions that are too far from your main base to conveniently commute. That way, you’ll have a safe haven with water and a place to refine any resources you collect while you’re out.

You can always abandon these bases when you’re finished with them, too.

Save blueprints

You should really save a blueprint of a simple outpost design so you can easily rebuild it in different areas. Researching the Solido Replicator will allow you to save a build as a blueprint that can be replicated in a single click as long as you have the materials in your inventory. Since a basic outpost won’t require much more than some Granite Stone and Salvaged Metal, you should be able to establish a pop-up camp basically anywhere on Arrakis.

Location is king. Try to place your bases close to shipwrecks and Imperial Testing Stations so you can have easy access to rare materials exclusively found in these areas. It’s also a good idea to build your base right next to a few ore deposits so you can mine them every time you come back home. It’ll save you a trip if you’re short a few ingots for your next equipment upgrade!

You should also try to place your base near a field of Dew Flowers. Blood is the main way to get water in the early stages of the game, but you’ll be able to research a Fremen tool called a Dew Reaper within the first few hours of your playthrough.

A Dew Reaper lets you harvest water from Dew Flowers instead of drinking from them directly. Not only will this let you bypass the dew limit that prevents you from fully hydrating yourself with these flowers, but it’ll also let you store a ton of water in Literjons so you’ll never get thirsty again. Dew Flowers can only be harvested in this way at dawn, but if you build your base near a field of them, you won’t have to worry about timing your water-gathering trips.

Protect your sandbike

Since vehicles will take damage if they’re left exposed to the elements for too long, don’t forget to build a little garage for your sandbike until you research the Vehicle Backup Tool that lets you store your bike.

As long as the game says “sheltered,” your bike should be safe in that spot. You don’t have to be fully enclosed and Watersealed for your bike to be protected. A few walls and a solid floor will do the trick.

How to fix outdated client m52 error in Dune Awakening

Dune: Awakening is an MMO title that combines survival and RPG mechanics. Even before its main release, the game topped Steam charts with an impressive CCU of nearly 120,000 players. It’s a big game, with an even bigger world, and like any other MMO, there will be constant updates.

This means that network and client errors are aplenty and will be present in the first few weeks of release. If you’re running into the “outdated client m52 error” in Dune: Awakening, here is what it means, and what you can do to fix it.

You might see the “outdated client m52” error in Dune: Awakening after the release of a new update, hotfix, or completion of server maintenance. It means what it says and indicates that the launcher isn’t on the latest version, even if you have downloaded and installed the latest patch.

The developers are aware of this error and have confirmed that if you attempt to launch the game immediately after the update goes live or following a planned maintenance, the client will display this error. This isn’t a problem on your end, and the developers have instructed you to wait a few minutes before playing the game.

This is what the official announcement message reads on their Discord:

Please note that when servers come back up, you may receive a “version mismatch” error if you try to connect immediately. This will only happen for about ~10 minutes on server up, so if you see this please don’t panic.

So, the only thing you can do is wait until the servers are properly live and try again in 10 to 20 minutes.

In addition to the recommendation from the developers, you can also try the following to ensure that the client and game are updated to the latest version.

Enable priority updates for Dune Awakening

To ensure that Dune: Awakening is always automatically updated to the latest version, ahead of everything else, you can increase its update priority in Steam.

In the Updates tab, select “Immediately download updates” under automatic updates.

Where to find iron in Dune: Awakening

Grabbing some iron in Dune: Awakening is one of the necessary steps in upgrading your equipment and what you can build in your little desert enclave. You will have already crafted plenty using copper, but now it’s time for the Iron Age, though that will necessitate you relocating a little bit to actually find some.

Sadly, this does mean you’ll have to contend with heatstroke and hungry, hungry sandworms trying to chow down on you. All that said, here’s how to find iron in Dune: Awakening, plus how to craft the special cutteray you’ll need to harvest it.

You can find iron in Eastern and Western Vermillius Gap; the two regions directly to the north of Hagga Basin South where you start. Before we talk about how to get there, you first need to research and fabricate the Cutteray Mk1, which is capable of mining iron. For this, you’ll need:

6x copper ingots
4x EMF Generators

Both of these are easy to get. You mine copper from boulders with blue spots using your cutteray and turn it into ingots in a small ore refinery in your base, while EMF Generators are usually located in moisture-sealed caves, i.e any of the cave icons on the map.

Once you’ve got your Cutteray Mk1, you’re ready to head north. The only problem is that to get to the regions with iron, you’ll have to cross a big sandy divide without getting eaten by sandworms or heatstroked. While you could probably make it travelling by night and moving just a little way at a time, your best bet is building a sandbike to speed across the desert, or getting a friend to give you a lift on theirs if they install an extra seat.

As soon as you cross, you’ll find the Southeast Ironworks and the Southwest Ironworks, plus a load of rocky pillared areas that have iron ore rocks dotted around them. Iron looks almost identical to copper; you’re searching for a big boulder with metallic spots all over it instead of blue ones. Once mined, you can turn iron ore into iron ingots at the small ore refinery as well, but unlike copper, this process also costs a fair amount of water, so you’ll want to stock up first.

How to get and use Blood Purifier in Dune Awakening

While trying to survive in the scorching hot sands of Arrakis in Dune Awakening, your water discipline becomes imperative, especially when dehydration causes you to lose health, making you an easy target for enemies.

There are multiple sources of getting water in Dune Awakening, but the most reliable one that you’ll find in the early game is by using the Blood Purifier. The building converts the blood of your enemies into pure drinking water, and it can be a valuable addition to your base.

How to unlock and build the Blood Purifier in Dune Awakening

The Blood Purifier in Dune Awakening unlocks after you put in research points under the Journey: Blood from water tab, which is the fourth tab. You must unlock everything before the Blood Purifier, including the Exsanguination kit that helps you extract blood from the dead enemies and store it.

After you have progressed through the tutorial to unlock and research the Exsanguination kit, craft it along with the Blood Sack. Now, you’re ready to defeat some enemies, and you can use your Exsanguination kit on the dead ones to extract their liquid into your sack. Once you’re done, go back to your base with 70 Salvaged metal collected from the machines near you. You can now put a point to unlock the Blood Purifier and build it using your construction builder, and make your way to the Refineries menu to find the building.

Before using the Blood Purifier, ensure your base has a stable power source, as the Blood Purifier requires 10 energy to function properly. Once you have enough electricity, use the Energy calls to power the Blood Purifier in your base. Press E to activate it and deposit the blood from your sacs. The blood will now slowly turn into water that you can press F to drink whenever you want to raise your hydration levels.

You can deposit up to 6,000 ml of blood and convert and store 1,000 ml at a time. Continue to consume it to allow your Blood Purifier to transform your blood into water for optimal hydration. You can also manage the Blood Purifier to enable or disable it, saving Energy. You can also adjust some general settings to ensure that nobody else can use your buildings to hydrate themselves.

There are other sources to increase your water intake, such as Dew Flowers, but you should not consume too much of it, as it can cause nausea. In the later stages, you can also craft better clothes, which should have the ability to recycle your drained water and restore some immediately to prevent the hydration from dropping too frequently.

I can’t stop watching these Dune: Awakening videos of players having butt-puckeringly close calls with angry sandworms

Dune: Awakening’s sandworms aren’t just scary, they’re the most brutally punishing feature of Funcom’s new survival MMO. When you get eaten by a sandworm, you permanently lose all your stuff. Weapons, armor, tools, gear, your entire inventory gets swallowed up when Shai-Hulud sucks you down, and you can’t go back and recover it. Even your vehicle is gone forever.

That’s why crossing the desert gaps between regions is so harrowing: the worm is always out there patrolling and your movements will bring it stampeding toward you, leading to lots of tense moments. Linger too long in the dunes and the sandworm will charge, its mouth the size of a train tunnel, gobbling down everything in front of it.

So my new hobby is jumping onto the Dune subreddit every day to see some white-knuckle, butt-puckeringly close calls with sandworms. Knowing what’s at stake, seeing a player flooring it across the desert with a worm barreling toward them, and jussssssst escaping to safety is utterly thrilling.

Here’s a few of my favorite sandworm close-calls.

If you see the worm going after another player, that doesn’t mean you’re safe. Anything that gets in Shai-Hulud’s way gets swallowed, including the unfortunate random player in the clip above. Shai-Hulud almost got a two-fer!

Tarry a bit too long while scrapping a crashed ship in the dunes, and Shai-Hulud will be along to swallow you and the wreck both. Luckily, the silly worm chose a poor spot to start its charge from and bonked its face against the rocks. Maybe next time!

Talk about a rough night. First this player gets targeted by Sardaukar assassins, then downed—twice—while fighting them. Midway through the skirmish a sandworm breaches in the background, but the player is close enough to the rocks to not be in danger, and the worm vanishes.

Surprise! It’s suddenly back again, presumably to swallow the dead soldiers, missing the recovering player by maybe a foot or two. It’s so close they’re actually buried in the sand from the worm’s breach. Yikes.

Threw in my own encounter above, though I didn’t escape through speed, I escaped by cleverly dying of other causes before the worm had a chance to eat me. After getting stuck in Dune: Awakening’s quicksand, my bike sank for a while as I fruitlessly and stupidly tried to gun the engine. Just as the worm appeared and headed my way, my bike exploded, killing me.

I know it doesn’t sound like a happy ending, but I only lost my bike and a couple resources from my backpack. If the worm had gotten me, I’d have lost everything. Thanks, explosions!

All Dune: Awakening trainer locations

Though you can only pick one class during character creation, Dune: Awakening trainers offer another way to learn the art of all five specializations—so don’t worry too much about locking yourself into one skill tree. After picking a starting class between the Trooper, Planetologist, Mentat, Bene Gesserit, or Swordmaster, the other four class specialists will take you as their pupil.

Well, that is if you can find them between the survival-crafting game’s winding caves, treacherous deserts, and hostile camps. To help pave the way, we’ve mapped out all of the basic Dune: Awakening trainer locations, plus outlined whatever quest they send you off on to satisfy their bar for admissions.

June 2025: Dune: Awakening just opened its advanced access period, so we’re finding all of the other trainer locations not in its beta tests. We’ve found the five basic trainers and will keep updating this guide as we locate and complete advanced trainer quests.

Once you’ve completed those, it’ll be time to learn from the advanced trainers, unlocking the path to upgraded techniques, passives, and abilities. Don’t worry about using skill points wrong along the way either; it’s pretty easy to respec in Dune: Awakening.

Dune: Awakening Trooper Trainer Location

Ghavouri, the Trooper trainer in Dune: Awakening as he assigned you the Trooper Basics: Proving Grounds quest.

Ghavouri is the Dune: Awakening Trooper trainer, and you can find him upon reaching Griffin’s Trading Outpost. He’s got quite the beef with a few local gang leaders in the basin, so if you agree to take them out in the Proving Grounds quest, he’ll owe you a favor and unlock the Trooper skill tree.

Derek Chinara is the basic Planetologist trainer in Dune: Awakening. He’s camped out just above Imperial Testing Station No. 2, and agrees to mentor you after completing the Minmic Film recovery quest.

The basic Dune Awakening Mentat trainer, Samin Moro, stands just outside of Riftwatch. She’ll ask you bring her some easy-to-farm items, then travel back across to the far west side of Eastern Vermillius Gap to the Kirab Camp near Suk Alusus. You’ll fight your way down a long corridor, then pick up the ID bracelet on the right side.

The door that the ID bracelet opens is just across the room, so go inside and poison the supply container. Bummer for those guys, but at least Samin will teach you Mentat basics now.

Dune: Awakening Bene Gesserit Trainer Location

To find Sister Mesa, the basic Bene Gesserit trainer, you’ll need to head to Helius Gate, which is in the Eastern Shield Wall region. You’ll find Helius Gate directly north of The Wreck of the Pallas, the large PvP-enabled shipwreck in Western Vermillius Gap.

You may find it easier to reach Sister Mesa if you drive north but keep to the east of the massive cliff wall Helius Gate sits upon, which will take you past Pinnacle Station (where you can find the Swordmaster trainer, see below). Once you’re at Pinnacle Station, you can turn left and loop southward to drive easily up to Helius Gate.

Dune: Awakening’s basic Swordmaster trainer, Arno, is in Pinnacle Station, the trading post in the Jabal-Eifrit Al-gharb region. To reach it, head due north from The Wreck of the Pallas, the large shipwreck in Western Vermillius Gap. The trading posts looks just like the others (Griffin’s Rest and The Anvil) so it’s easy to spot from a distance.

Dune: Awakening Multiplayer Guide: How To Party Up With Friends

Dune: Awakening is a new MMORPG that can be played completely solo or in a party with your friends. If you’re looking to take on the planet of Arrakis with a party, then you’ll need to follow a few steps to get multiplayer working.

In the guide below, we’ll show you everything you need to know about multiplayer in Dune: Awakening, how to add friends, and how to join up with friends to make a party that can play together.

How to add friends in Dune: Awakening

As of right now, Dune: Awakening is only available on PC via Steam. While the game is planned to eventually arrive on console, you’re limited to playing with PC friends on Steam.

Of course, this does make the friend invite process a little easier, as all you need to do is add a friend via Steam to be able to invite them to your party in Dune: Awakening. If you already have a friend added on Steam, they will appear on your friends list in the Social Hub of the game. You can access the Social hub from the “Skills” page and then click the Social menu icon from there.

If you already have friends added on Steam, hover over their name in the friends list and then click on the “invite” icon next to their name. You can also choose to join their party by clicking the other icon.

However, if you need to add a friend through Dune: Awakening itself, you can go around adding them through Steam. To do that, go to the Social menu and press the “Search Players” button. Here, you can add a player through their character name or Funcom ID. Every player is assigned a Funcom ID after making their character in Dune: Awakening, but if you know your friend’s in-game name, just type that in.

Once you send out a friend invite, you’ll receive a notification when your friend accepts the invite, and they’ll be added to your friends list. From here, invite them or join their party.

Dune: Awakening allows for parties of five, so if you try and join a friend but can’t, it’s likely because they already have a full party.

How to play multiplayer in Dune: Awakening

Now that you’ve added your friends, how do you go about playing with them? Well, the first step is to ensure you and any potential party members are all playing on the same server. You can choose your dedicated server from the main menu in Dune: Awakening, and it’s highly recommended that you and your friends all choose the same one. This way, you can play on the same map, see each other in-game, build a base together, etc.

You can still play in a party with friends on a different server, but it’s simply a better experience when everyone in the party is on the same server. If you do try and play with a player on a different server, you’ll still join their server, but be considered a guest instead of a full member. The major restriction with this is that party members on different servers can’t build in their friend’s building space, so if that matters to you, then simply play together on the same server.

Playing on the same server allows you to pool resources, such as Salvaged Metal and Fuel Cells, together in one base. You can also coordinate skills between all party members so you have access to different skill trees between the party.

All party members can choose when they log in and out of a server, so one party leader doesn’t control when everyone joins the game. If you’re playing on different servers, though, you might have to join a queue to be admitted onto the server where your friend is located.

It shouldn’t be all that surprising, but the dunes of Arrakis are massive, sandworm-infested, and can become a bit of a slog when you’re trekking from one side to the other for quests and resources. But you don’t have to walk it out. Dune: Awakening actually has fast travel, it’s just hidden behind an NPC that you’ll meet during a side quest.

Even though you’ll unlock other modes of transport later on, including land and air vehicles, fast travel is still a necessity if you need to go from one side of the map to another in an instant. So here’s what you need to do.

How to unlock and use fast travel in Dune: Awakening

You’ll unlock fast travel when you first visit Griffin’s Reach Tradepost in the A Touch of Civilisation quest in the hopes of regrouping with Zantara early on. When you arrive, you’ll automatically get the A Wider World side quest to speak to the ornithopter pilot, who’s hiding in the corner of the main building opposite the contract board near the merchant. This pilot acts like a taxi, providing fast travel between cities and tradeposts that you’ve already visited.

Speaking to the ornithopter pilot, you can ask them to fly you to three locations: Hagga Basin, Arrakeen, and Harko Village. While Arakeen is an Atreides stronghold and Harko Village is its Harkonnen counterpart, primarily used for faction and Landsraad activities, selecting Hagga Basin lists various key locations you’ve been to that you can quickly fly to. Yes, this does mean that you have to head to an ornithopter pilot at a tradepost (like Griffin’s Reach) each time you want to fast travel, as you can’t conveniently do it from the map screen.

Outside of fast travelling, you can also get a sandbike, a jeep, and even an ornithopter of your own. You’ll need these to travel between areas that can’t be accessed by fast travelling–everything outside of settlements, basically.

Dune: Awakening is now available in early access for players who ordered the Deluxe or Ultimate Editions, which means players can enjoy some sweet Twitch drops early in June 2025.

Funcom is giving away these rewards to mark the celebration of the game’s launch, and once claimed, you get to keep them forever in your inventory.

Dune Awakening Twitch drops start and end dates

The Dune: Awakening Twitch drops event runs from June 5 to 24, meaning you have 19 days to watch drop-enabled livestreams and earn all the rewards.

You have to meet some criteria, which include watching these livestreams for some time before claiming them. Here are all the Twitch drops you can get:

How to claim Dune Awakening Twitch drops

To claim those Twitch drops, all you need to do is:

Head over to any Dune: Awakening drop-enabled livestream (I’ve mentioned some streamers below).
Watch the stream for two hours in total (the watch time is cumulative, so watching two hours gives you all the rewards).
Once all the rewards are collected, head over to the game’s Account Manager page.
Log in with your Steam account. You will be asked to log in to the game at least once for it to show up on the Account Manager page.
Once done, register using your email address, and then verify it with the code Funcom emails.
After doing that, link your Twitch account. You will need to log in.
Then, you’re all set. Hit the Claim button, and all the rewards will go to your in-game inventory.
