The Thursday Murder Club review: Starry cast makes this the Avengers of ageing sleuths

by admin August 22, 2025

The Thursday Murder Club is a movie mystery that’s perfect for armchair detectives who like their crime cozy and their comedy broad.

Published in September 2020, The Thursday Murder Club was TV presenter Richard Osman’s debut novel, and it quickly became a sensation.

The book flew off shelves, sequels followed – as did an acclaimed radio adaptation – and now the movie version has arrived courtesy of Netflix.

Home Alone helmer Chris Columbus directs, while the cast is filled with the best pensioners money can buy; a cavalcade of stars clearly having a ball bringing Osman’s weird and wonderful characters to life.

What’s The Thursday Murder Club about?

Netflix

The Thursday Murder Club is set in a beautiful retirement community called Cooper’s Chase, where the sun always shines, and there’s everything a retiree could want, from support llamas, archery classes, and a jigsaw room, to life drawing lessons that feature hot men with their tops off.

It’s idyllic and quaint beyond belief, but every Thursday, a group of residents commandeer said jigsaw room, and investigate cold cases from the past.

They start with an unsolved 1973 mystery concerning “the woman in white who fell out of a window.” But then murder rears its head in the present, via a fresh mystery involving dodgy businessmen and even dodgier gangsters, as well as the ownership of Cooper’s Chase itself.

So using age and experience to their advantage – plus a healthy dose of cunning, and less healthy slices of cake – the Thursday Murder Club set about solving the case and saving their home.

Who is in the club?

NetflixRichard Osman flanked his Thursday Murder Club cast.

Each member of the Thursday Murder Club possesses a different and very specific set of skills, making them a bit like the Avengers of elderly sleuths, or a geriatric Justice League.

Helen Mirren is Elizabeth, the group’s leader, who very possibly worked as a government spy. Ben Kingsley is Ibrahim, a former psychiatrist who is usually the smartest person in the room. While Pierce Brosnan is Ron, a retired trade union leader who’s as tough as nails.

They’re an investigative trio at the start of the movie, and our way into the story is through Celia Imrie’s Joyce, a former nurse who is new to Cooper’s Chase, and whom the club brings onboard for her medical expertise.

Brosnan’s dodgy cockney accent aside – the second time he’s offended our ears following the MobLand debacle – the Thursday Murder Club is cast well, and make a winning team when working together.

But it’s Mirren who delivers the standout performance, not when she’s barking orders at her crew or the local constabulary, but rather when Elizabeth is with husband Stephen (Jonathan Pryce), who suffers from dementia. Played to perfection by the pair, their touching scenes are both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Mays bring the biggest laughs

NetflixNaomie Ackie and Daniel Mays play police officers.

But while there are sad moments spread throughout the movie, they’re outnumbered by some big laughs.

Accent notwithstanding, Brosnan gets some of the biggest, most notably when he’s glimpsed exercising with old dears in the pool, but also when scruffy Ron is fooling the coppers, or smart Ron is giving them a dressing down in his wedding suit.

Other highlights including a cracking Queen Elizabeth II gag, a funny sequence involving the drinking of gin on a bus, and a shocker concerning the aforementioned life drawing that needs to be seen to be believed.

The movie also mines mirth from local coppers being outthought and outwitted by the TMC, with Daniel Mays hilarious as the increasingly confused and frustrated DCI Hughes.

Is The Thursday Murder Club good?

Netflix

The Thursday Murder Clubs is a solid murder-mystery that keeps you guessing until the final few reels, while Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcoate’s tight script ensures that the 118 minute run-time flies by.

There’s the odd contrivance, involving a dictaphone, bunches of flowers, and an awkward boxing pose. While it gets a little heavy-handed at times, through literal blood on a character’s hands, and a sexism sub-plot that feels tacked on.

But the jokes come thick and fast, while the movie’s best scenes happen in the quieter periods, when touching on more serious themes of loneliness, ill health, and the indignities of old age.

They’re fleeting moments, handled with sensitivity by Columbus and his cast, and they might just leave you with something in your eye when the credits roll.

The Thursday Murder Club score: 4/5

The Thursday Murder Club is twee beyond belief, but it’s also a faithful adaptation of Richard Osman’s novel; one that delivers the requisite murder and mystery, as well as laughter and the odd tear.

The Thursday Murder Club hits Netflix on August 28, 2025, while you can head here for more of the best thrillers on the streamer.

Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars have both been delayed

by admin May 25, 2025

Marvel Studios has chosen to delay its next two high-stakes Avengers movies by seven months apiece. Avengers: Doomsday moves from May 1 to December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars shifts from May 27, 2027 to December 17 of that year.

Insiders told Deadline that the delay is just to accommodate the “gargantuan vision” of two films that will be “among the biggest ever made.” (Or maybe Marvel is scared of GTA 6.) The films are being made back-to-back by directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed the two previous Avengers team-up movies and Marvel’s two highest-grossing films: 2018’s Infinity War and 2019’s Endgame. Avengers: Doomsday is in production now.

Marvel owner Disney won’t have any concerns about moving the Avengers movies from their traditional early summer slots to the holidays. Spider-Man: No Way Home launched in mid-December 2021 and was a massive success, becoming the third-highest-grossing Marvel film. (Avengers: Doomsday’s coveted May 1, 2026 slot will go to another big Disney movie, The Devil Wears Prada 2.)

Still, the move reflects a shift from quantity to quality at Marvel Studios, which Disney CEO Bob Iger said during an investor call had “lost a little focus by making too much.” After releasing only one film in 2024 (Deadpool & Wolverine), Marvel is putting out three in fairly quick success in 2025: Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and the forthcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But then there will be a break of a full year — long by Marvel standards — before Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July 2026, followed by another yearlong break between the two upcoming Avengers movies.

Underlining this point, Variety notes that Disney has removed or swapped out several slots for “untitled Marvel” projects in 2026 and 2027, though it has three slots in 2028 reserved for Marvel films. What these might be — indeed, what the future holds generally for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Secret Wars — remains a mystery. The status of the Armor Wars movie is unknown, to say nothing of the beleaguered Blade, while plans for Shang-Chi and Black Panther sequels remain vague. Above all this looms the specter of a possible X-Men movie, which finally seems to be coming together.

The two Avengers films ought to be more than enough to look forward to in the meantime. Marvel’s announced cast for Doomsday is a multiversal pile-up of MCU veterans, newcomers from Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts*, actors from the legacy Fox X-Men movies, and wild cards like Channing Tatum’s Gambit. The cast is led by Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, not Tony Stark. They really could go anywhere from here.

Marvel’s movie schedule after delays to Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars

by admin May 23, 2025

The Avengers will assemble again. However, it will be at a later date.

Disney has delayed the releases of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Doomsday moves from May 1, 2026, to December 18, 2026. Secret Wars heads to December 17, 2027, instead of May 7, 2027.

Disney was not done with Marvel announcements. The studio also removed three Marvel dates from its calendar: February 13, 2026; November 6, 2026; and November 5, 2027. The February date has no replacement movie, while the two November offerings are now slotted as untitled Disney films.

Only four MCU movies in Phase Six have release dates:

  • The Fantastic Four: First Steps – July 25, 2025
  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day – July 31, 2026
  • Avengers: Doomsday – December 18, 2026
  • Avengers: Secret Wars – December 17, 2027

With Doomsday moving to December, Marvel will have a year between The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It’s Marvel’s longest theatrical movie gap since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and 2021’s Black Widow. COVID-19 played a factor in that break from 2019 to 2021.

Disney still has a few release dates with untitled Marvel movies scheduled. July 23 is the only 2027 release besides Secret Wars. 2028 features a trio of movies on February 18, May 5, and November 10.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has now implemented a quality-over-quantity approach with Marvel projects. In May 2024, Iger said on an earnings call that going forward, Marvel will only release about two to three movies and two TV shows per year.

Marvel is betting the house on Doomsday and Secret Wars, so the Russo Brothers getting more time to deliver these two tentpoles makes sense. These two Avengers films will transition the MCU into the Mutant Era, where the X-Men will play a prominent role.

Filming on Avengers: Doomsday is underway. Marvel announced the Doomsday cast in March via live stream that ended with Robert Downey Jr. walking into frame. Downey will play the film’s villain, Doctor Doom.

Marvel currently has Thunderbolts* in theaters everywhere. The movie has grossed over $331 million worldwide in three weeks.

Avengers: Doomsday set leaker receives first formal warning from Marvel

by admin May 22, 2025

The Marvel fan who snuck onto the set of Avengers: Doomsday and shared a now-viral video has now received a formal warning from the MCU, according to their latest update.

It’s no surprise that details surrounding Avengers: Doomsday are being kept tightly under wraps, although we do know the upcoming MCU movie will bring together every superhero but the kitchen sink for an Endgame-style battle.

What’s more, Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the franchise, only as Doctor Doom instead of Tony Stark. However, with filming taking place in London, UK, as we speak, one fan managed to break onto the set.

Operating under the handle @theyneversawitcomingg, they shared a video of the set on TikTok, which quickly went viral. When it was removed, they reuploaded it to Instagram, and now Marvel has reportedly stepped in.

Avengers: Doomsday leaker receives “first formal threat”

On Wednesday (May 21), the leaker added an Instagram Story to their account, stating, “Received my first ‘formal threat’. I might be cooked.” Marvel has yet to publicly comment on the situation, although it wouldn’t be surprising if the studio had taken action.

In the bio, they also wrote, “Video got removed, posting on Instagram.” It’s received hundreds of comments, with fellow fans warning them to be cautious.

“If it’s real, be careful, they can sue you and you know it,” said one, while another wrote, “Bro is getting sued to pieces.”

A third added, “Yeah Kevin fiege is definitely going to come find you,” and a fourth chimed in, “Yeah you’re cooked buddy.”

As well as the video, which showed a bar situated in the Marvel location of Madripoor, the user shared what appeared to be a blueprint of the home of Annie Reynolds – the mother of Thunderbolts’ Bob Reynolds. However, this appears to have been removed.

Although many of the comments are tongue-in-cheek, leaking footage from a Marvel set can carry serious legal consequences. Disney and Marvel Studios are notoriously protective of their intellectual property, and leaking unreleased content could land a person in court.

Article continues after ad

Depending on how the footage was obtained, the individual could face criminal trespassing charges, copyright infringement claims, or even civil suits over the disclosure of confidential material.

This wouldn’t be the first time Marvel has pursued leakers. In 2023, the studio filed a DMCA subpoena against Reddit to uncover the identity of users who leaked dialogue from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ahead of release.

In a similar incident, The Expendables 3 was leaked online weeks before its debut, prompting Lionsgate to sue the anonymous uploaders for damages, claiming it impacted the movie’s box office performance. Whether Marvel or Disney will escalate this new case beyond a warning remains to be seen.

Avengers: Doomsday lands in cinemas on May 1, 2026. Until then, read everything we know about Avengers: Secret Wars, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and check out our ranking of every MCU movie.
