US, UK Authorities to Form Digital Asset Task Force

by admin September 22, 2025

Treasury authorities in the US and UK have announced the formation of a transatlantic task force to explore “short-to-medium term collaboration on digital assets.”

In Monday notices, the US Treasury Department and HM Treasury said the cross-country effort, taking place through the already established UK-US Financial Regulatory Working Group, would release a report with recommendations within 180 days.

The new task force, called the Transatlantic Taskforce for Markets of the Future, will consider crypto laws and regulations as well as how the two countries can collaborate on “wholesale digital markets innovation.”

The announcement follows a Financial Times report on a meeting last week between UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on how the two countries could work together on crypto regulation.

The discussion reportedly included representatives from several cryptocurrency companies. At the same time, the task force said on Monday that it should “seek input from leading industry experts to ensure that its recommendations are informed by what matters most to industry.”

The US Treasury did not explicitly state whether the task force formation was related to any crypto-related legislation in Congress, such as the law to establish a framework for payment stablecoins, the GENIUS Act. Under the bill, signed into law in July, the US Treasury Department is required to draft regulations with the Federal Reserve before implementation.

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase shared the US-UK announcement on its blog on Monday, saying it was “proud” to support the partnership. Daniel Seifert, the exchange’s vice president and regional managing director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, was present in the discussions between Reeves and Bessent, according to a spokesperson for Coinbase.

Similar approaches to crypto regulation?

The US and UK have both taken steps to address regulatory issues affecting digital assets and companies handling them in 2025. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with US President Donald Trump last week, signing a memorandum of understanding to explore the development of technologies, including artificial intelligence, though the deal is not legally binding.

While the UK Treasury under Reeves said in April that it would focus on crypto rules to “support innovation while cracking down on fraudsters,” the US side under Bessent has pushed an approach that suggests scaling back on regulation.

The US Treasury Secretary said in August that the department would explore “budget-neutral pathways” to acquire Bitcoin (BTC) as part of the US government’s crypto reserve plans.

US Authorities Seize $600K USDT From Iranian Drone Program Operator

The Attorney’s Office of the District of Massachusetts has announced the confiscation of nearly $600,000 in USDT from Iranian national Mohammad Abedini. Concurrently, US authorities are also seeking the civil forfeiture of the seized crypto assets.

Abedini Faces US Case Over Alleged Iran Drone Role

In a statement released by the US Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday, Abedini is named the founder and managing director of SDRA, an Iranian firm accused of supplying critical technology to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

In particular, SDRA specializes in the production of navigation modules, including its flagship product, the Sepehr Navigation System, which has been widely integrated into the IRGC’s fleet of military drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

According to prosecutors, Abedini’s company has worked closely with the IRGC Aerospace Force, which is regarded as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO), since at least 2014. Between 2021 and 2022, roughly 99% of SDRA’s sales of the Sepehr Navigation System, designed for one-way attack drones, were made directly to the IRGC Aerospace Force.

In January 2024, forensic analysis of a drone strike that killed three US service members and injured more than 40 others at Tower 22, a military installation in northern Jordan, identified the vector as an Iranian-made Shahed UAV, equipped with the Sepehr Navigation System manufactured by SDRA.

Abedini was arrested by Italian authorities in December 2024 and was charged in federal court in Boston for providing digital and material support to a foreign terrorist organization. However, the Iranian national was soon released by the Italian government and is now believed to be in Iran.

The DOJ Case For USDT Forfeiture

US authorities have also seized $584,741 USDT from an un-hosted wallet address believed to belong to Abedini. Presently, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts has filed for a civil forfeiture action, which would allow the DOJ to take control of these crypto assets without needing to convict Abedini.

US authorities have explained its rationale behind this case, stating:

US law authorizes the forfeiture of all assets of individuals or entities engaged in planning or perpetrating a federal crime of terrorism against the United States, citizens or residents of the United States, or their property and all assets, foreign or domestic, affording any person a source of influence over any such entity.

Interestingly, all claims by the DOJ in the civil forfeiture and also criminal complaints remain merely allegations, designating Abedini as an innocent man until proven otherwise.

Costa Rican authorities raid hotel in Gardner investigation

by admin September 12, 2025

Sep 11, 2025, 06:54 PM ET

Nearly six months after the death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, authorities in Costa Rica on Thursday raided the hotel in which the boy was found dead, and a prosecutor suggested the investigation could result in a manslaughter case.

In his first media interview about the case, prosecutor Kenneth Alvarez told ESPN on a video call that the three-hour raid at the Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort in Manuel Antonio was to collect additional evidence related to what an autopsy determined to be Miller Gardner’s carbon monoxide death. It was the first formal search of the hotel since authorities went to the resort a week after the death.

“Let us remember that what was done at that time was the measurement of toxic substances at the site,” Alvarez told ESPN. “Based on those tests, a second proceeding was scheduled, which was carried out today to collect evidence.”

With television cameras waiting at the hotel entrance, three pickup trucks carrying agents from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) arrived to conduct the raid.

Alvarez, who has said the investigation centers on the potential allegations of manslaughter, told ESPN that authorities searched the offices of management, maintenance and accounting, retrieving physical and digital evidence. The prosecutor also said that several members of the hotel staff have been interviewed and “have always shown themselves to be collaborative.” There have been no arrests or charges in the case.

Brett Gardner could not be reached for comment Thursday, and a representative from the Yankees did not immediately respond.

Alvarez said Public Ministry officials have had “constant contact with the lawyers that the Gardner family hired in Costa Rica.”

“They knew about the operation, and we have remained in communication,” he said.

He added that authorities have coordinated with an FBI attaché in Costa Rica to help “guide the initial investigation and learn a bit about the profile of the persons.”

Miller Gardner died March 21 at the Costa Rican resort where he was staying with his family. Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, announced their youngest son’s death two days later in a statement released by the Yankees. According to the statement, Miller Gardner fell ill along with several other family members while on vacation.

Two days after that statement, a representative from the OIJ told ESPN that Miller Gardner and family members had “gone to eat at a restaurant and that the food had made them sick.” In that interview, the spokesperson said the OIJ considered asphyxiation before ruling it out. The OIJ later confirmed to ESPN by text message that investigators believed the death to be accidental rather than the result of foul play.

On April 2, authorities said the death was caused by carbon monoxide, which might have emanated from an adjacent “machine room.” In June, a representative from the prosecutor’s office told ESPN that the case remained under investigation and that prosecutors sought “to determine whether the cause of death was a homicide or not, and, if so, to establish responsibility.”

Miller Gardner played high school football in South Carolina and wore No. 11, which his father donned during 14 MLB seasons, all with the Yankees. Brett Gardner, a popular team leader, was a member of New York’s 2009 championship team and retired in 2021.

US and Dutch Authorities Take Down Crypto-Fueled Fake ID Marketplace

by admin August 30, 2025

In brief

  • Dutch and U.S. authorities shut down VerifTools, a major fake ID marketplace that generated $6.4 million selling counterfeit documents for as little as $9 in crypto.
  • The operation seized 23 servers from one of the largest international providers of fraudulent identity documents.
  • Modern fake IDs use sophisticated technology like holograms and UV ink, making them nearly indistinguishable from genuine documents.

Dutch and American law enforcement have shuttered online fake ID marketplace VerifTools, which sold counterfeit documentation for as little as $9 in cryptocurrency.

According to a press release published Thursday, Dutch cybercrime police gained control of two physical data servers in Amsterdam, while also seizing control of 21 virtual servers.

They worked in collaboration with the FBI, which seized two domains used by the VerifTools marketplace, as well as a promotional blog.

Both the FBI and the Identity Fraud and Documents Centre of Expertise in the Netherlands had conducted investigations into VerifTools, with the FBI determining that the marketplace had generated around $6.4 million in revenues.

Similarly, Dutch authorities estimate that Veriftools had an annual turnover of roughly €1.3 million (about $1.5 million), making it one of the largest providers of fraudulent identity documents internationally.

The marketplace reportedly worked by requiring users to upload a passport photo and enter false data, which the site’s operators then used to generate a false ID. FBI agents were able to order fake driving licenses for the state of New Mexico, paying for the counterfeit IDs using crypto—though specific coins were not identified.

Once delivered, fake IDs are often used to bypass KYC safeguards or commit fraud, with police in Wales encountering the VerifTools marketplace in the process of a fraud investigation.

The VerifTools URL now leads browsers to a splash page, which announces that the website has been seized by Dutch and American law enforcement agencies.

“The removal of this marketplace is a major step in protecting the public from fraud and identity theft crime,” said Philip Russell, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Division. “Together with our partners, we will continue to target and dismantle the platforms that criminals depend on, no matter where they operate.”

In their press release, Dutch police report that they will continue to investigate the data found on the seized servers, which it will use in an effort to locate VerifTools’ administrators.

According to experts, the production and distribution of fake IDs has not only become big business, but is growing rapidly.

“Pinning down exact figures is difficult given the illegal nature of the trade, but most estimates place the global fake ID market somewhere in the billions of dollars,” said Kartik Venkatesh, global head of innovation at identity technology firm GBG.

Venkatesh told Decrypt that today’s fake IDs are far more sophisticated than the “crude” knockoffs of past decades, using industrial-level machinery and micrometer-thick lamination.

“Many include holograms, polycarbonate layers, barcodes that scan correctly, and UV-reactive ink, making them nearly indistinguishable from genuine documents without specialist equipment,” he explained.

And what has driven this leap in quality is increased demand, which has provided the conditions for a “thriving” illegal market of tools and technologies, which also includes AI-generated IDs.

“Production is now slick and international, with websites resembling professional ecommerce stores,” he said. “Buyers upload details, pay in cryptocurrency, and receive fakes hidden inside everyday items.”

In fact, Venkatesh reports that some sellers even offer return policies, guarantees, and guidance on how to use the IDs convincingly.

From his vantage point, the solution to the growth in fake ID marketplaces is to invest in sophisticated ID verification systems, which are already helping some businesses and authorities detect counterfeits.

“By layering document analysis, facial biometrics, liveness detection and behavioral signals,” he said, “they can spot inconsistencies invisible to human inspection.”

He also suggests that digital IDs may have a role to play longer-term, since their cryptographic design makes them harder to forge, while they can be instantly verified with issuing authorities.

However, while they also allow for selective disclosure, Venkatesh warned that digital identities will attract their own forms of abuse. He noted “synthetic IDs stitched together from real and fake data and deepfake biometrics designed to trick liveness checks, to credential theft if someone’s phone or ID wallet is compromised.”

Because of this, he argued that the future will reside in “balance” and layered checks.

“Digital IDs can raise the bar for fraudsters,” he said, “but only when paired with multi-layered verification that can adapt to new attack vectors.”
