1,200 Criminals Arrested in Crypto Clampdown: Interpol

by admin August 24, 2025

In brief

  • Interpol’s Operation Serengeti 2.0 resulted in arrests of over 1,200 cybercriminals across 18 African countries and the U.K., with $97.4 million confiscated.
  • Angola dismantled 25 illegal crypto mining centers run by Chinese nationals, seizing $37 million worth of equipment and power stations.
  • Zambian authorities broke up a massive online investment fraud scheme that defrauded 65,000 victims of $300 million through fake crypto investments.

Interpol has arrested more than 1,200 cybercriminals who have collectively targeted 88,000 victims—including through cryptocurrency scams.

A “sweeping” effort saw 18 African countries and the U.K. unite for Operation Serengeti 2.0, with more than $97.4 million confiscated as a result.

In Angola, 25 crypto mining centers were dismantled, amid allegations that 60 Chinese nationals had been illegally validating blockchain transactions and earning digital assets as a result.

Officials say mining equipment and 45 illicit power stations worth over $37 million were seized, which will now be used to distribute power in poorer areas.

Meanwhile, Zambian authorities broke up a “large-scale online investment fraud scheme” that led 65,000 people to lose $300 million.

Victims were encouraged to invest in digital assets after being lured in by aggressive advertising campaigns that promoted attractive returns.

“Authorities arrested 15 individuals and seized key evidence including domains, mobile numbers and bank accounts. Investigations are ongoing with efforts focused on tracking down overseas collaborators,” the Interpol statement added.

In separate developments, a suspected human trafficking network was disrupted in the country, with 372 forged passports from seven countries seized as a result.

Prior to Operation Serengeti 2.0 taking place, investigators had undergone training in blockchain analytics and ransomware analysis—familiarizing themselves with open-source intelligence tools.

“Each Interpol-coordinated operation builds on the last, deepening cooperation, increasing information sharing and developing investigative skills across member countries,” said Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza.

The law enforcement agency added that the scale of the arrests “underscores the global reach of cybercrime and the urgent need for cross-border cooperation.”

The operation was funded by the U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. A spokesperson for the FCDO told Decrypt that the operation “helped dismantle a network of cyber criminals and scammers who seek to destabilize our societies.”

“The UK will continue to use all tools at our disposal to protect our national security and support our international partners in tackling cyber-crime,” the spokesperson added.

In other developments, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it has deported dozens of people convicted of “cyberterrorism and internet fraud,” primarily from China and the Philippines.

Some of those cases involved romance scams, with victims deceived into handing over cash for bogus crypto investments.

18 protesters arrested at Microsoft HQ

by admin August 22, 2025

18 members of the pro-Palestinian group No Azure for Apartheid were arrested while protesting Microsoft’s business ties with Israel.

The arrests took place on August 20, 2025, during the second day of No Azure for Apartheid protests at Microsoft’s HQ in Redmond, Washington.

Microsoft workers, former workers, and pro-Palestinian community members re-established a “Liberation Zone” in Microsoft’s East Campus Plaza (referred to by the group as the Martyred Palestinian Children’s Plaza) after being dispersed by police on August 19, 2025.

According to an Instagram post by No Azure for Apartheid, published August 21, 2025, protestors had “set up tents, displayed art to honor Palestinian martyrs, and gave speeches about Microsoft’s complicity in the surveillance and genocide of Palestinians.”

The protest escalated around 12:15pm, however, with No Azure for Apartheid claiming Microsoft and Redmond Police retaliated against its “peaceful opposition of war crimes” with “the brutal mass arrest of 18 protestors, chemical weapons, and physical violence.”

“Current workers, former workers, and community members were hog-tied, violently dragged around, and pepper-sprayed in a repressive escalation,” the group claimed on Instagram.

“Microsoft and Redmond Police chose to dehumanize, brutalize, and criminalize people of conscience for opposing Microsoft’s actual war crimes.”

The statement continued: “Despite today’s brutal repression, let us be clear: no violence will successfully shut down escalation efforts against Microsoft’s complicity in war crimes. The Worker Intifada is an answer to Gaza’s call for action, and so The Worker Intifada will live on.”

In an X post on August 21, 2025, Redmond police confirmed the 18 arrests and claimed that after initially attempting to “trespass the protestors,” they “resisted and became aggressive.”

The police department went on to claim that “a few protestors had poured paint over the Microsoft sign and on the ground,” while “others had blocked a pedestrian bridge and were using stolen tables and chairs from vendors to form a barrier.”

The 18 arrests were allegedly for “multiple charges, including trespassing, malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and obstruction,” but Redmond police claim “no injuries were reported.”

“As we have made clear, Microsoft is committed to its human rights standards and contractual terms of service, including in the Middle East,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement to Komo News.

“The company announced last week that it is pursuing a thorough and independent review of new allegations first reported earlier this month about the purported use of its Azure platform in Israel.”

No Azure for Apartheid is a “movement of Microsoft workers demanding that Microsoft end its direct and indirect complicity in Israeli apartheid and genocide.”

The group specifically demands Microsoft “cut ties with Israel,” calls for an “end to the genocide and forced starvation” in Palestine, pays “reparations to the Palestinians”, and ends “the discrimination against workers.”

Over 2,000 Microsoft workers have signed the No Azure for Apartheid petition, which demands the tech giant “cut all [its] ties with the Israeli Army,” and that the company conducts “a third-party independent audit of our contract, services and product to make sure they are not involved in any human right violation, be it in Gaza, or elsewhere.”

Earlier this month, Arkane Studios STJV union members voiced their support for the group and the petition in an open letter to Microsoft and the heads of its subsidiaries.

In May, Microsoft conducted an internal review following claims that its Azure and AI technologies were being used by the Israel Ministry of Defence (IMOD) “to target civilians or cause harm in the conflict in Gaza.”

At the time, Microsoft acknowledged it provides the IMOD with “software, professional services, Azure cloud and AI services,” but claimed its review found “no evidence to date” that these technologies “have been used to target or harm people” in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

In a recent statement, No Azure for Apartheid refuted Microsoft’s claims and explained that it is protesting at Microsoft HQ to “escalate against Microsoft’s active role in powering 22 months of genocide in Palestine.”

“For 22 months, Microsoft enabled, accelerated, and profited off the genocide while repeatedly silencing and retaliating against its workers who spoke up against its immoral and illegal genocide-profiteering business practices,” the statement reads.

“The amount of evidence has become insurmountable; the disruptions have become non-stop; and the worker pressure has reached a tipping point. Still, Microsoft and its executives refuse to listen to its workers’ demands and continue to hide behind desperate PR statements and sham investigations.”

It added: “It has become clear to us: Microsoft’s claims of being a moral company are a facade. They will not change their ways because it is the right thing to do; they will continue to exploit our labor to directly enable apartheid, power genocide through tech weapons in the form of Cloud and AI, and abet the starvation campaign in Gaza; in other words, they will only divest from the economy of occupation and genocide when not doing so hurts their bottom line.

“That’s why, today, we join the long tradition of workers who have taken material direct action in their workplaces to force an end to the ongoing cycle of genocide-profiteering in solidarity with Palestine.”

18 protesters arrested: Microsoft claims ‘vandalism and property damage,’ protesters claim ‘genocide powered by Microsoft technology’

by admin August 21, 2025

After police dispersed them on Tuesday, “No Azure for Apartheid” protestors returned to Microsoft’s East Campus Plaza in Redmond, Washington on Wednesday to continue protesting the tech giant’s dealings with Israel, which allegedly include the use of its Azure cloud platform to surveil Palestinians and select Gaza bombing targets.

This time, 18 protesters were arrested for charges including “trespassing, malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and obstruction.”

According to Redmond police, “a few protesters had poured paint over the Microsoft sign and on the ground” (red paint to symbolize blood) and “others had blocked a pedestrian bridge and were using stolen tables and chairs from vendors to form a barrier.”

In a statement sent to PC Gamer, protest organizers said that “Microsoft chose to militarize its campus to harass, attack and violently arrest 18 people who refused to be cogs in the Israeli genocidal machine.”

A Microsoft spokesperson told PC Gamer that protestors “engaged in vandalism and property damage” and “disrupted, harassed, and took tables and tents from local small businesses at a lunchtime farmer’s market for employees.”

Israel’s attacks on Gaza, allegedly with the help of Microsoft’s services, have killed at least 62,000 people since October 2023, including thousands of children, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. Over 200 people have now died of malnutrition, the ministry says, and according to the UN, over 1,000 aid seekers in Gaza have been killed since May. Israel has also killed hundreds of aid workers, at one point burying 15 in a mass grave, the UN reports, and recently killed six journalists in Gaza, the latest of many.

“As we have made clear, Microsoft is committed to its human rights standards and contractual terms of service, including in the Middle East,” said Microsoft’s spokesperson. “The company announced last week that it is pursuing a thorough and independent review of new allegations first reported earlier this month about the purported use of its Azure platform in Israel.”

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Those allegations appeared in an investigation by The Guardian, which claimed that Israel has used Azure to construct “a sweeping and intrusive system that collects and stores recordings of millions of mobile phone calls made each day by Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank” and which “facilitated the preparation of deadly airstrikes and has shaped military operations in Gaza and the West Bank.”

The protestors, composed of “community members and current and former Microsoft workers,” declared Microsoft’s East Campus Plaza a “Liberated Zone,” renaming it the “Martyred Palestinian Children’s Plaza.”

“As we recognize the sacrifice made by those arrested today, we also recognize that the militarism, physical violence and detentions perpetrated by the Redmond Police Department pale in comparison to the experiences Palestinians are forced to endure on a daily basis,” said No Azure for Apartheid in its statement.

Microsoft says it’s doing “the hard work needed to uphold its human rights standards in the Middle East” as well as “supporting and taking clear steps to address unlawful actions that damage property, disrupt business or that threaten and harm others.”

No injuries were reported as a result of the protest or arrests, according to police.

“Our message to [Microsoft CEO] Satya Nadella and other executives who are shamelessly shaking hands with Israeli war criminals to sign deals for genocidal technology is this: our movement will not stop, we will not rest, and we will continue to apply pressure,” say the protesters, who have published their demands at noazureforapartheid.com. “We will show up to confront, disrupt, and take action in every place, at every moment, both announced and unannounced. Escalations will continue as long as Microsoft is invested in the economy of occupation and genocide.”

Israeli Cyber Official Arrested During Undercover Internet Crimes Against Children Sting

by admin August 18, 2025

A high-ranking member of Israel’s cybersecurity directorate was recently arrested in Las Vegas as part of an undercover sting operation involving internet crimes against children, according to the State Department.

A joint operation between city police and the FBI that targeted child sex predators resulted in the arrest of Tom Artiom Alexandrovich, a man who, according to many news outlets, has been identified as a member of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate, which operates out of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

Mediate previously reported that Alexandrovich’s since-deleted LinkedIn profile had also identified him as an official with the agency. The Jerusalem Post claims that Alexandrovich worked “in a technical role at the Cyber Directorate,” and KLAS-TV, a CBS news affiliate, also claims to have confirmed that an “Israeli government official was one of eight people arrested” during the weekend sting, and that Alexandrovich was in the city for “a cyber event.” Blackhat, the well-known cybersecurity conference, recently took place in Vegas.

Additionally, the U.S. government appears to have confirmed much of this information. The X account for the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs posted about the arrest, in an apparent effort to dispel internet rumors that the government had intervened on Alexandrovich’s behalf. “The Department of State is aware that Tom Artiom Alexandrovich, an Israeli citizen, was arrested in Las Vegas and given a court date for charges related to soliciting sex electronically from a minor,” the post states. “He did not claim diplomatic immunity and was released by a state judge pending a court date. Any claims that the U.S. government intervened are false.” When reached for comment by Gizmodo, the State Department simply referred us to its tweet.

Alexandrovich faces a charge of luring a child with a computer for sex acts, KLAS writes. He was allowed to leave after having posted a $10,000 bail, the outlet adds, citing court records.

An archived Haaretz report states that a “senior official in Israel’s National Cyber Directorate” had been questioned in Vegas for alleged online solicitation of a minor, but does not identify the official by name. However, the report also includes a statement from Israel’s cyber directorate, which admits that one of its employees was questioned by authorities during a trip to the U.S. The statement reads: “The employee updated the directorate that during his trip to the United States, he was questioned by U.S. authorities on matters unrelated to his work, and he returned to Israel on his scheduled date. The directorate has not yet received additional details through official channels. If and when such details are received, the directorate will act accordingly.”

Gizmodo reached out to the Las Vegas Police Department and the Israeli government for more information.

Iran retaliates against the U.S. and Israel

Recently, Iran retaliated against the U.S. after it launched a major bomb in Iran targeting three nuclear sites. On June 24, Iran fired missiles at a a U.S. base in Qatar. However, the U.S. were able to intercept the missiles and successfully prevented casualties in the attack.

The crypto market reacted positively to news of the interception, with Bitcoin briefly rebounding over the $103,000 level after previously dipping below the $100k threshold.

Two British men arrested after stealing $6 million golden toilet

by admin June 15, 2025

A coordinated heist was put on to steal a solid gold, 216lb golden toilet from a museum exhibit in 2019. Now, several years after the original heist, the two main perpetrators have finally been brought in.

The toilet was part of an exhibition at Blenheim Palace, and it was even fully-functional when they stole it. And, though the perps had given police the slip for years, they found a ton of information on their phones that ultimately led to a conviction.

Article continues after ad

Before stealing the toilet, one of them had even taken selfies with it. Authorities found that along with several other pieces of evidence there, leading to an open and shut case.

Men arrested in connection with multi-million dollar toilet heist

The toilet, worth £4.8 million (approximately $6.5 million), was stolen in less than six minutes according to police. Perpetrators James Sheen and Michael Jones booked time with the exhibit the day prior to their heist, scoping out the area before breaking into the Blenheim Palace.

Sheen, the mastermind behind the heist, was convicted in 2024. His DNA was found at the scene of the crime as well as evidence that he sold the gold, including a picture of £520,000 in a duffel bag. He took it to brag about his ill-gotten gains through a text message.

Michael Jones, the other man who participated in stealing the toilet, was arrested earlier in 2025 and was also found guilty of burglary.

One of the key pieces of evidence in this conviction was a selfie Jones took with the toilet in the background.

In the trial, Jones confirmed that he did, in fact, use the toilet, saying that he had a “splendid” experience.

“From phone messages to DNA traces found in a stolen car and on the sledgehammer used in the burglary, this wealth of evidence ultimately enabled us to secure their convictions,” said an officer working on the trial.

They apparently had over 30,000 pages of evidence that were used to determine who committed the crime. These two were initially arrested in 2019, but were released until more evidence had been found that could definitively say they stole the toilet.

This isn’t the only bizarre heist in recent memory, with a man who stole several thousand dollars in Magic cards being forced to write an apology letter to fans of the card game after he was caught.

Woman arrested after stealing over $400,000 to spend on TikTok

by admin June 14, 2025

A woman in the UK was arrested after manufacturing fraudulent purchases to embezzle money from her employer, with hundreds of thousands of dollars going toward buying gifts for streamers on TikTok. She’s since been sentenced to over 2 years in prison.

She purposely manipulated financial reports to funnel money into her own bank account. She started small, taking a couple hundred dollars here or there and altering the records to make it look like that money essentially disappeared.

Article continues after ad

It got to the point where her employer became suspicious. The company was losing a massive amount of money, but no one could figure out why.

As it turns out, 29 year-old Katherine Greenall had stolen a grand total of £443,523, around $601,000 USD, from her employer over the course of a few years. The amount of money she stole and spent is enough to potentially sink the company she worked for and may result in layoffs. And most of it went to TikTok.

Woman secretly stole money for years to spend on TikTok

Greenall’s employer approached her about the issue on May 1, 2025, unaware that she was the one funneling funds into her bank account. She promised to look into it before taking another £20,000 and disappearing.

While she spent around £142,000 on conventional purchases like parties for relatives, vacations, groceries, and other luxury goods, the rest of this money went straight to TikTok.

She’d buy TikTok coins and use them to donate to users on the platform, sending them gifts that’d show up when they’re streaming.

According to court reports, she spent £301,162 on TikTok coins, or around $408,000 USD. She essentially took her company’s earnings and used them to donate to streamers.

100 TikTok coins is worth around $1.04, meaning that she bought approximately 42,472,976 TikTok coins with company funds.

The lawyer defending her in court claimed that she was “suffering from a form of addiction to TikTok”, but this defense didn’t hold up in court. The judge acknowledged that spending money on the platform may have been an “escape” for her, but they still sentenced her to 28 months behind bars for her crimes.

Suspected French crypto kidnappings leader arrested in Morocco

by admin June 5, 2025

A man accused of being one of the masterminds behind a string of recent kidnappings in France to gain access to crypto has been arrested in Morocco.

At the request of French authorities, Morocco’s national police and intelligence service arrested Badiss Mohamed Amide Bajjou — a 24-year-old French-Moroccan man who was reportedly found in possession of multiple bladed weapons and several mobile phones.

France’s Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, praised the arrest in a June 4 X post after French news outlet Le Parisien reported the arrest.

“I sincerely thank Morocco for this arrest, which demonstrates the excellent judicial cooperation between our two countries, particularly against organized crime,” Darmanin said.

Interpol issued a red notice for Bajjou’s arrest in 2023, alleging he was tied to other kidnappings and criminal activities.

Two crypto kidnappings and a failed attempt

The latest incident occurred in broad daylight on May 13, when multiple assailants allegedly attempted to kidnap the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, CEO of French crypto platform Paymium.

A video of the alleged attack filmed by passersby shows Noizat’s daughter fending off masked men with the help of bystanders, forcing them back into a nearby waiting van, where they fled the scene.

French law enforcement is reportedly boosting security for crypto executives and their families to fight against the wave of crypto-related kidnappings.

The measures include priority access to police emergency lines, home security assessments and safety briefings from French law enforcement to ensure best practices are being followed.

Suspect in French Crypto Kidnappings Arrested in Morocco

by admin June 5, 2025

A suspect allegedly behind recent high-profile crypto kidnappings in France has been arrested in Morocco, according to Maghreb Arab Press, a government-run press agency.

At the request of French authorities, a joint operation of Morocco’s National Judicial Police Brigade (BNPJ) and the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) took the 24-year-old French-Moroccan suspect into custody, according to a statement from Moroccan police distributed by MAP. The press agency described the man, who was identified by French press as Badiss Mohamed Amide Bajjou, as a mastermind of the crimes.

“I sincerely thank Morocco for this arrest, which demonstrates the excellent judicial cooperation between our two countries, particularly against organized crime,” said French Minister of Justice Gérald Darmanin in a translated statement on social-media site X.

Interpol said Bajjou was sought for organized extortion, kidnapping and violence, according to a so-called “red notice” posted for the man.

French authorities have already charged more than two dozen people — including six minors — in the spate of crypto kidnappings in Paris, most of them tied to the May 13 failed kidnapping attempt of the family of Pierre Noizat, the CEO of exchange Paymium.

Also in May, the father of a French crypto millionaire was reportedly kidnapped in a case that was similar to the earlier seizure of David Ballard, a co-founder of crypto-wallet developer Ledger, and his wife. Kidnappers severed a finger from each of the men.

After those recent cases, France’s Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau hosted a meeting with people involved in crypto to discuss measures to keep them secure.
