More than 3 million records, 12TB of data exposed in major app builder breach

by admin June 5, 2025

  • Passion.io, a major no-code app-building app, operated a non-password-protected database
  • The archive contained millions of records, with a total size of around 12TB
  • It was since then locked down, but users should still take care

Millions of records containing sensitive, personally identifiable information, were sitting online in yet another unencrypted, non-password-protected database, experts have warned.

Found by security researcher Jeremiah Fowler, who discovered and reported his findings to vpnMentor, the database contained 3,637,107 records, and was 12.2TB in total size.

It belongs to a company called Passion.io, a Delaware-based no-code app-building platform that allows creators, influencers, entrepreneurs, and coaches, to create websites without having any prior coding knowledge. They can also create, and sell, interactive courses.

Locking the archive down

Fowler said that he analyzed a “limited sampling of the exposed documents” and saw internal files, images, and spreadsheet documents marked as “users” and “invoices”.

These files contained people’s names, email addresses, postal addresses, and details about payments or payouts for users and app creators.

This type of information is a treasure trove for cybercriminals. They can use it to create convincing phishing emails, tricking Passion’s users into making rash, dangerous decisions. Besides phishing, the data can be used in identity theft, wire fraud, and other types of scams.

The researcher notified Passion.io about his findings, and got a response on the same day. The database was locked down, and the company confirmed it was working on putting guardrails in place so that mishaps like this one don’t repeat.

Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed!

“We’re treating this very seriously and moving fast,” the company told Fowler.

So far, there is no evidence the information is circulating on the dark web – and it’s also not known if Passion.io is the one managing the database, or if the job was outsourced to a third party.

Without a thorough investigation, there is no way of knowing for how long the database remained open, or if any threat actors found it already.

The Nintendo Switch Phone App Just Got A Lot Better

by admin May 29, 2025

Screenshot: Nintendo / Kotaku

The Nintendo Switch 2 launches in exactly one week, and in the lead up to the new console, Nintendo has updated the Nintendo Switch Online app and made it much more useful. It also has a new, pithier name. Say goodbye to the Nintendo Switch Online App, and say hello to the Nintendo Switch App.

Nintendo Switch 2 Could Launch With Almost No Reviews

On May 28, Nintendo quietly pushed out update 3.0.1 for the Nintendo Switch Online app. As mentioned, this abbreviated the app’s name and also reworked some of its UI. But the big news is that the Switch App will now let you upload screenshots and videos from the Switch 2 directly to your phone without needing to use a QR code. You can even set the Switch 2 to automatically upload up to 100 screenshots and videos to the app. These will remain available to download from your phone for 30 days. Even better, this new feature is available for free, no paid Switch Online membership is needed. However, this new option is only available on the Switch 2.

Some other great changes include the ability to add friends via the app itself, and the ability to receive notifications on your phone when your friends log on.

A lot of these features are things that have existed in Sony and Microsoft’s apps and consoles for years now, so it does feel like Nintendo is finally catching up. Still, it’s nice that the Switch app on phones will feel more modern and be far more useful. As someone who never shared a screenshot from my Switch to my phone, I was gobsmacked that you had to use a QR code and transfer it over wifi. Using the cloud and letting the console do it automatically is a huge improvement.

Here are the full patch notes for the big update:

Switch App 3.0.1 patch notes

  • The app name has changed from Nintendo Switch Online to Nintendo Switch App. Elements of the app design have been updated.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 consoles are now supported.
  • Screenshots and videos saved in your console’s album can now be uploaded to the app.
  • You can now receive GameChat invitations.
  • More friend features are now available in the app.
  • You can now add friends via the app.
  • You can choose to receive a notification in the app when a friend comes online.
  • Various other small improvements and bug fixes have been made.

Instagram Keeps Polishing Its Edits App to Woo Video Creators

by admin May 29, 2025

As I watch through my computer screen, Tom Bender, the product lead for Instagram’s Edits, places a finger on his smartphone and the software traces an outline around a chubby cat from some meme video. He then takes the furry cutout and drops it over an existing video of himself within the Edits app, adjusting the animal’s opacity to make the cat slightly see-through and ensuring that his own visage in the background stays visible.

This ability to fine-tune overlay opacities was just one of many new and upcoming features he demonstrated in a recent app walkthrough for WIRED. While the Instagram platform was first known for photography, it’s now dominated by video. The new Edits app serves as a companion to Instagram, but one that gives the next generation of video creators all the tools they need to make Reels.

Edits launched last month on Apple and Android devices, after months of delays. Meta, which owns Instagram, is putting Edits forward as a challenger to ByteDance’s CapCut app. That mobile video editing tool, designed to support TikTok creators, was released internationally in 2020 and has become the default choice for creating videos on your phone.

Although Edits initially squeaked past CapCut on Apple’s free downloads charts during release week, the app now sits outside of the 100 most downloaded apps on iOS. It sits far below its main competitor, which is comfortably positioned in the top 10. (Meta declined to share current usage numbers or other statistics for Edits.)

Bender knows he needs to make the app more attractive to creators. So, what’s his plan? Iteration, iteration, iteration.

“We launched a minimum viable product,” he says. “I think the most important thing, from our perspective, is to listen to creators and just launch great features every month or every week.” More video effects and filters are rolling out now. Soon, you’ll be able to adjust the volume across all of the clips in a project. In the next few weeks, an in-app teleprompter—so creators can look right at the camera as they’re reading scripts—is set to drop.

With Edits, Instagram isn’t trying to usurp powerful desktop video editing tools like Adobe Premiere and Final Cut. Rather the developers are targeting anyone looking for better ways to craft social media videos on their smartphone. Bender touts Edits’ preproduction tools, such as the existing Inspiration tab for finding video ideas and saving trending Reels, as an example of Instagram integrations designed with mobile video editors in mind. “Creators will have a long Notes app file or DM threads where they send examples of videos,” he says. “There’s not a great way to keep track of all your ideas today.” After posting, users can see insights into how the video performed on Instagram Reels inside of the Edits app.

Social media video creators rarely post their work on just a single platform; they’ll edit in one app (typically CapCut) and post to TikTok, Instagram, X, and elsewhere. So why should they consider switching to Edits from software they’re familiar with, beyond the Instagram integrations?

Texas Senate to vote on bill that restricts social media access for children, while parental consent for app downloads will be required from next year

by admin May 29, 2025

As is not unusual among folks of a certain age, it’s hard not to wonder about the effects of unfettered internet access on my impressionable younger self. Ah well, back to doomscrolling and staring into the vast content pit it is. Wait, what was I doing? Oh, yes, the news!

Earlier this week Texas governor Greg Abbott signed into law a bill that will require both Google and Apple’s app stores to verify the age of its users from January 1 (via Reuters). Once this law comes into effect in 2026, folks under the age of 18 throughout the state will have to get parental consent to download apps or make in-app purchases. Texas also has another bill awaiting a Senate vote that aims more specifically to restrict children’s access to social media apps, too.

Apple and Google are understandably less than keen, arguing that the blanket age verification requirements overreach and making the case it’s really only necessary for select apps. Apple issued a statement to Reuters, saying, “If enacted, app marketplaces will be required to collect and keep sensitive personal identifying information for every Texan who wants to download an app, even if it’s an app that simply provides weather updates or sports scores.”

You may like

Still, this isn’t necessarily a done deal. Last year in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law a ban on social media accounts for anyone under the age of 14. This February, a judge considered blocking the ban amid concerns it would unconstitutionally curtail free speech. As of right now, the ban stands in Florida, but a similar free speech challenge could find its way to slowing down the Texas bills.

The Apple and Alphabet-backed Chamber of Progress already has something to say on that front. The group’s vice president, Kathleen Farley, told Reuters, “A big path for challenge is that it burdens adult speech in attempting to regulate children’s speech. I would say there are arguments that this is a content-based regulation singling out digital communication.”

Utah was the first US state to pass an app store age verification bill into law back in March of this year. This followed laws directly addressing minors’ access to social media back in 2023, though obviously concerns about young people’s access to apps and social media more broadly has been bubbling the world over. For instance, last year Australia proposed a ban on social media for everyone under the age of 16 that will ultimately come into effect later this year. Tech-savvy teenagers across the land have likely already cracked a way to get around it.

As for the social media companies themselves, they’ve been surprisingly positive about these legislative developments stateside—though that’s likely out of buck-passing relief. Meta, Snap, and X issued a joint statement in response to the Utah law’s passing this year that said, “Parents want a one-stop shop to verify their child’s age and grant permission for them to download apps in a privacy-preserving way. The app store is the best place for it. We applaud Utah for putting parents in charge with its landmark legislation and urge Congress to follow suit.”

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Though I see the free speech argument, I only trust each of the big tech companies tangled up in this as far as I can throw them—to say nothing of the state of Texas pulling the ‘think of the children’ card. I’m not going to stand here and pretend I only ever had positive experiences with social media as a young’un, but it would also be remiss to not acknowledge how it opened up my world when the walls of my day-to-day looked miserably narrow. Age verification and a blanket ban would’ve protected me from some things, while also potentially reinforcing how hopeless I felt…if I didn’t bother to figure out how to sideload my apps or otherwise circumnavigate the need for age verification.

The trouble with bans, in my humble opinion, is that they often present a tough image without actually addressing the core issue. Arguably the ‘core issue’ here is not one straightforward thing—but the rollback of both content and fact-checking moderation policies by major players like Meta certainly doesn’t help. In fact, there arguably aren’t any well-moderated online spaces for young people, with even the CEO of the extremely popular Roblox saying, “Don’t let your kids be on Roblox.” The very real risks posed by social media to children aren’t going to go away simply because all the young’uns have been banned, instead likely only creating more cracks for young people to disappear down.

Years after acquiring Tile, Life360 has integrated the trackers into its app

by admin May 28, 2025

Life360, a family locator app, said today that it has fully integrated the object-tracking features of Tile into its own platform. The Life360 app can now set up and manage Tile trackers, deliver notifications when an item gets left behind and provide real-time location updates for the trackers in addition to its usual features for managing family members’ safety.

Life360 announced its acquisition of Tile for $205 million way back in 2021. At the time of the purchase, Life360 said Tile would continue to operate independently, but it has still been a long time coming for the two businesses to fully integrate with each other’s offerings. In that time, Tile has faced challenges from competitors that have more resources at their back, such as Apple and AirTags. It was also subject to a cyberattack last year where hackers obtained customers’ names, addresses, email addresses and other personal information.

Apple’s rumored iOS 19 gaming app is exciting for Apple fans, but it won’t tempt gamers from Windows

by admin May 28, 2025

  • Apple may be developing a dedicated gaming app for iOS, macOS and more
  • The app will contain things like achievements, leaderboards and messages
  • It could be announced at WWDC in June

For years, Apple has been trying to convince the world that it’s taking gaming seriously, and with the popularity of IOS gaming and the appearance of AAA titles like Cyberpunk 2077 on macOS, there’s some truth to the company’s assertion.

Just in case you needed more convincing, there’s a new rumor from Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman that Apple will soon launch a dedicated gaming app in iOS 19 to woo players to its platforms. As a Mac-owning gamer, I’m cautiously optimistic about the rumors – even if we still need more affordable hardware and games before it gets anywhere close to being a Windows competitor.

If you missed the news, the app will apparently “serve as a launcher for titles and centralize in-game achievements, leaderboards, communications and other activity,” Gurman said, adding that it will also feature “editorial content from Apple about new titles, offer access to the App Store’s game section and promote [Apple] Arcade.” It’s expected to be revealed on iOS, macOS, iPadOS and tvOS as soon as Apple’s WWDC 2025 event on June 9.

The move makes sense – after all, the iPhone is a phenomenally popular gaming platform, and announcing a move like this at WWDC could help to cement the popularity of iOS 19 before it’s even out the door. Apple might also be hoping that it will tempt more gamers to switch from Windows to the Cupertino firm’s platforms – but on this point, I’m not entirely convinced.

Destination of choice for gamers

This app might work well in iOS 19, where gaming tends to be a little more casual than on desktop computers. But things might look very different on macOS.

As a gamer who also owns a Mac, I’ve been encouraged over the last few years by Apple’s strides in the gaming world. It’s nowhere near parity with Windows yet, but the situation today is much better than it was just a few years ago.

For a long time, the problem was the chicken-and-egg nature of Mac gaming. Gamers didn’t want to switch to macOS due to the lack of games, and developers didn’t want to bring games to the Mac due to the lack of players. That’s slowly starting to change, with big-name titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Baldur’s Gate 3 helping to dispel the idea that the Mac is a gaming wasteland.

Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.

However, the impact of a dedicated gaming app will likely be limited. Beyond my contention that gamers care more about hardware and game availability than launcher apps, Gurman is also skeptical, saying that “testers of the software say it probably won’t change the perception among players and makers of high-end titles.”

Any advance for gaming on Apple’s platforms is welcome in my eyes, and this app could help by making gaming more prominent among users of iOS and macOS. But what’s really needed – on the Mac at least – is a greater number of attention-grabbing titles and more affordable access to components that offer exceptional gaming performance.

Until that happens, Windows will always be the destination of choice for gamers.

Windows Update will soon add app updates to its functionality

by admin May 28, 2025

Windows Update has been a part of the Windows Operating system for decades but it wasn’t until recently that Microsoft has expressed any interest in expanding the platform to support individual application updates.

An announcement was recently shared by Annie Chen from Microsoft, explaining that the new Windows Update orchestration platform will make it possible for Devs to implement software updates using the Windows Update platform and corresponding tools.

It’s important to note that the new Windows Update orchestration platform has not yet been made available to the public. If you want to check it out now, you have to sign up for the private preview program intended for both developers and teams that need to roll out application updates to Windows.

In the announcement, Chen provides Visual Studio as an example of a given application that must be updated independently. With the new Windows Update orchestration platform, it and other Windows components, as well as third party apps, could be updated centrally from one location.

The Windows Update orchestration platform comes with additional features beyond the application update support. Some of the confirmed features include what Microsoft calls “eco-efficient scheduling”. This uses an amalgam of data, including things like user activity to determine the best time to update the machine. It also includes tools that allow devs to send software update notifications using the notification tools built into the platform.

The platform also aims to provide users with a centralized location for viewing important data. Users can explore the update history for all of the supported applications as well as view any error logs that are generated when updates fail. Microsoft also mentions administrator support which allows admins to set deadlines for specific updates.

Again, this new platform has not been made publicly available so only developers and app teams who sign up for the preview program will be able to check it out for now.

Apple Planning To Release Gaming App Near Nintendo Switch 2’s Launch – Report

by admin May 28, 2025

There’s reportedly a new dedicated gaming app from Apple planned for all of its devices–from iPhone to Apple TV–that the company looks to launch around Nintendo Switch 2’s release on June 5. The app sounds like a mix of a store launcher to pick up games as well as a social hub to replace Game Center.

According to Bloomberg, this will be a major push from Apple to appeal to players and game developers. The app will apparently feature achievements, leaderboards, and social features. Additionally, the Mac version supposedly will include games bought and downloaded from other storefronts. Rumblings of a dedicated gaming app first appeared late last year at 9to5Mac.

Now Playing: iPhone 16 and 16 Pro Step Up AAA Gaming On Mobile

That’s not all from Apple on the gaming front, either. Earlier this week, the company acquired Sneaky Sasquatch maker RAC7, per Digital Trends. The purchase of the two-person studio is reportedly the first time Apple has ever bought a gaming developer. Sneaky Sasquatch is one of the most popular games on the subscription service Apple Arcade.

The dedicated gaming app also comes almost five years after Fortnite maker Epic took Apple (and Google) to court over App Store policies that didn’t allow for companies to get direct payment from users. In fact, Fortnite finally returned to iOS in the US just over a week ago after almost a half-decade off the platform.

Apple has also spent years touting its gaming pedigree, even stating the iPhone 15 Pro was going to be the best gaming console in 2023. Then, last year, Apple launched the iPhone 16 with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and support for AAA games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Death Stranding.

Apple is ready to replace Game Center with a more Xbox-like gaming app

by admin May 28, 2025

Apple plans to announce an app focused on video games for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV at its Worldwide Developer Conference next week, according to Bloomberg. The app will let you launch games you’ve installed on your devices and serve as a hub for things like achievements and leaderboards.

Apple is expected to launch its gaming app alongside the next version of iOS this September, Bloomberg reports. It will apparently replace Apple’s Game Center, feature editorial content, and let you access games also available on the App Store. A 9to5Mac report from last year described the app as working similarly to the Xbox app for iPhone.

A Mac version of the new app will let users “tap into games downloaded outside of the App Store,” Bloomberg says.

Bloomberg’s report follows news that Apple bought its first gaming studio. The company confirmed to Digital Trends that it acquired RAC7, the two-person studio behind Sneaky Sasquatch, one of the first games released on its Apple Arcade games subscription service. RAC7 won’t be folding into any other teams at the company, but will instead continue to operate as a game studio all its own, according to Digital Trends.

More claims of Apple dedicated iOS gaming app surface as company acquires first game studio

by admin May 28, 2025

A new report has lend further credence to last year’s claims Apple is working on game-focused iOS app that’ll integrate store, social features, achievements and more – with the company now said to be “seeking to sell gamers and developers on the idea that it’s a leader in the market.”

Word that Apple was looking to expand its gaming strategy with a dedicated iOS app first surfaced last year, when news site 9to5 Mac reported efforts were underway at the company to combine the functionality of iOS’ App Store and its long-defunct Game Center service – which previously offered a centralised place to view likes of challenges, leaderboards, and achievements before the app was removed from iOS in 2016.

And now, eight months later, Bloomberg has corroborated 9to5’s story with a similar report, saying Apple is looking to preinstall the new gaming app on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV set-top boxes later this year. There’s also talk of a Mac version, capable of displaying games downloaded outside of the App Store. As in 9to5’s earlier report, Bloomberg – citing “people with knowledge of the matter” – says the app will serve as a launcher for games and centralise in-game achievements, leaderboards, communications, and other activities.

Apple now owns Sneaky Sasquatch developer RAC7.Watch on YouTube

It’ll reportedly also feature internally produced editorial content highlighting new games available within the app, which will include those from the App Store’s game section and the company’s Apple Arcade game subscription service. Bloomberg says the app is due to launch as part of Apple’s next iOS version, iOS 19, and will be showcased during the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference on 9th June ahead of a September arrival.

Apple’s push to create a prominent games destination for iOS users does, of course, follow the EU’s mandate last year that Apple must allow sideloading and alternate marketplaces on its devices to comply with the Digital Markets Act. Since then, a number of third-party marketplaces have taken advantage of the EU’s new rules, most notably the Epic Games Store.

A new game-focused iOS app from Apple would mark another small step in the company’s slowly evolving gaming strategy, which has so far included the launch of its Apple Arcade games subscription service in 2019, new tools to help developer easily port their Mac games to iOS, and even a push to woo major publishers like Capcom and Ubisoft onto its platform in recent years – although efforts to sell full-price AAA games such as Resident Evil 7, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage to iOS users have reportedly proved disappointing.

Reports of Apple’s new app come as the company announces its first video game studio acquisition. It now owns RAC7, the two-person studio responsible for Apple Arcade hit Sneaky Sasquatch – although an Apple spokesperson told Digital Trends the move was a “unique circumstance”, as it saw an opportunity to help the team grow its game further.
