Why the skibidi are you adding skibidi to the Cambridge Dictionary? We think it has “staying power”, answer word boffins

Skibidi. Dop, dop, dop. Yes, yes. Skibidi. Double u. Neem, neem. This is the clarion call of the modern age, the infernal message brought unto our virgin ears by the Skibidi Toilets. No, wait, keep reading! It’ll be worth it. Probably. After all, the word skibidi has now been added to the Cambridge Dictionary, and this is a reality we’ve all got to reckon with.

Skibidi Toilet, in case you’ve been living somewhere free from the influence of vertically-framed surrealism, is a long-running series of 3D animations by YouTuber Alexey ‘DaFuq!?Boom!’ Gerasimov. It generally conveys the tale of a great war between a legion of heads protruding from loos and an army of folks with cameras for heads, with help from Half-Life 2 assets and inspiration from the annals of Garry’s Mod machinima. Any 12 year olds you know probably can’t get enough of it. Or think it’s lame because they’ve already moved on to the next thing.

Anyway, as if Michael Bay spearheading efforts to make a Skibidi Toilet movie wasn’t enough reason for you to be aware of this lavatory entertainment, the folks behind the Cambridge Dictionary are adding it to their great tome of words this year. I should stress here that it’s one of thousands of words being added to the annals. The others include the likes of tradwife, delulu, broligarchy, and mouse jiggler.

“It’s not every day you get to see words like ‘skibidi’ and ‘delulu’ make their way into the Cambridge Dictionary. We only add words where we think they’ll have staying power,” said the tradebook of terminology’s lexical programme manager, Colin McIntosh.

So, the bookish boffins clearly think the skibidi era’s more than a passing fad. I for one look forward to historians in centuries’ time blowing the dust off of tomes so they can scan through firsthand accounts of the skibidi era. Weathered folks in fields gasping in awe as their trowels unearth plastic designed to resemble part of G-Toilet’s unholy ceramic bowl. I mean, to be fair, they’re also definitely going to discover people posed like this with the likes of Stellar Blade burned into their screens. We can only pray that we’re not brought back as Futurama-style heads-in-jars to explain any of this.

At the very least, this cultural event that’s just about linked to video games has at least finally taught me what skibidi means. “A word that can have different meanings such as ‘cool’ or ‘bad’, or can be used with no real meaning as a joke”, is how the Cambridge Dictionary defines the term. The example sentence given is “What the skibidi are you doing?”.

Hang on a minute, maybe this is the sort of versatile expression Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick could use to convey the sorts of games his company are striving to make! If good is bad and great is the new great, then maybe GTA 6 can only be accurately described as skibidi.

I’m preparing to petition my co-workers to add this important term to the RPS style guide, along with an instruction that it must be used in every article that doesn’t cover uber-serious news, on pain of death. Wish me luck in climbing out of the skip Edwin, James, and Nic will rightly lob me into.

Clue words to unlock in-game hints

Your goal is to find hidden words that fit the puzzle’s theme. If you’re stuck, find any words you can. Every time you find three words of four letters or more, Strands will reveal one of the theme words. These are the words I used to get those hints but any words of four or more letters that you find will work:

  • PLIE, PLIES, SOOT, FOOL, RAKE, RAKES, ROLE, GOAL, FOAL, LOAF, SAND, SLIP, FOOT, TOOK, NEAR

Answers for today’s Strands puzzle

These are the answers that tie into the theme. The goal of the puzzle is to find them all, including the spangram, a theme word that reaches from one side of the puzzle to the other. When you have all of them (I originally thought there were always eight but learned that the number can vary), every letter on the board will be used. Here are the nonspangram answers:

Quick tips for Strands

#1: To get more clue words, see if you can tweak the words you’ve already found, by adding an “S” or other variants. And if you find a word like WILL, see if other letters are close enough to help you make SILL, or BILL.

#2: Once you get one theme word, look at the puzzle to see if you can spot other related words.

#3: If you’ve been given the letters for a theme word, but can’t figure it out, guess three more clue words, and the puzzle will light up each letter in order, revealing the word.

Wordle today: Answer and hint #1466 for June 24

Feel free to use our freshly-written hint for today’s Wordle whenever you think you need a bit of a boost. Unleash it at the start to give your opening guess a helping hand, or save it for later, when you need to get rid of those last few gaps. However your game goes, don’t forget that the June 24 (1466) answer is always here if you need it.

I was convinced that every new row today was going to be the winner. I’d been careful. Clever. Confident. Every row turned out to be anything but—some of them were just as wrong as the one before. It was annoying to have the rug pulled out from underneath me with each new guess, but to be fair it did make my long and winding road to victory much more interesting.

Wordle gives you six rows of five boxes each day, and you’ll need to work out which secret five-letter word is hiding inside them to keep up your winning streak.

You should start with a strong word like ARISE, or any other word that contains a good mix of common consonants and multiple vowels. You’ll also want to avoid starting words with repeating letters, as you’re wasting the chance to potentially eliminate or confirm an extra letter. Once you hit Enter, you’ll see which ones you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.

Rematch Developers Answer Some Of The Biggest Questions About The Game

Since its release on Thursday, Rematch has pulled in some solid numbers and is picking up steam. With its relatively simple gameplay, Rematch is an enjoyable game to watch and play. play. Of course, with a growing player-base comes questions about what’s next for the game, and the developers found time to address them.

Over on the game’s Steam page, the team behind Rematch went through a laundry list of updates, how they’re working to prevent lag that affects gameplay, and addressed the potential of crossplay down the line. However, they also assured players they’re taking one thing at a time.

“We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who joined us during the Early Access launch and shared valuable feedback,” the statement read. “Seeing players from all over the world enjoying Rematch and expressing their excitement online has been incredibly rewarding.”

The team had initially wanted to implement a crossplay feature, but “unforeseen technical complexities” prevented it from being ready on time. They added that they understand players’ frustration and are going to get it working soon.

“It’s very important for us that our players are able to enjoy Rematch with their friends, so along with bugfixes, crossplay is our absolute highest priority. We’re committed to delivering this feature swiftly, and we’ll share a more precise deadline as soon as possible.”

Here are also issues they’re looking into for the game:

  • Core gameplay: Simple fixes like improving the sliding tackle, tweaks to goalkeeper mechanics, to the dribbling system and wall contact. All the while taking into account community feedback. The idea would be that as they move forward, test servers will be at work so they can try out new features and improvements in a live environment.
  • Competitive features: They are currently designing a tournament system with a leaderboard system for players above Elite ranking. There’s also a club creation system in the works that will be aiming to provide more variety for competitive players.
  • Social components: While crossplay is their top priority, other features are also being worked on such as being able to spectate your squad’s game when you join a squad. This will allow players to team up and rematch with teammates they enjoyed playing with, and more.
  • Casual play features: Aside from a new quick play game mode and a rotating game mode queue, AI-controlled bots will be used so that players are able to train with and against the computer in both workshops or in dedicated game modes.

“Please remember that we are not a huge team, and that these features take time, so don’t expect all this by the end of the year! We will communicate on a more precise roadmap for upcoming seasons as soon as we have better visibility on when we can deliver on these intentions.”

Rematch is available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It is part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate game catalog, but can also be purchased for $30.

Japan wants a post cash economy: Is crypto the answer?

Bank of Japan officials are beginning to acknowledge what once seemed outlandish: that cryptocurrencies could one day become a major part of everyday payments in Japan—and perhaps even challenge the yen itself.

While they stress that such a shift won’t happen overnight, the notion that digital assets could reshape the country’s payment landscape is no longer mere speculation; it’s increasingly being treated as a plausible scenario.

At a recent meeting with private-sector partners involved in the BOJ’s central bank digital currency pilot, Executive Director Kazushige Kamiyama said that while Japan still sees high levels of banknote issuance, “usage of notes could fall significantly in the future amid rapid digitalisation.”

It was a nod to what’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore lately. The country once known for clinging to paper yen has been shifting fast. Government data showed cashless payments jumped to 42.8% of all transactions in 2024, nearly tripling from just over 13% in 2010. Japan even hit its official 40% target a year ahead of schedule.

The Bank of Japan isn’t making any promises just yet. It hasn’t decided whether it’ll actually roll out a digital yen — basically its version of a central bank digital currency — but the pilot program that kicked off in 2023 is now running at full speed.

While BOJ officials aren’t embracing crypto as a replacement for fiat, their growing support for a digital yen suggests they see decentralized assets as a serious contender in the payments space.

Kamiyama says the BOJ needs to consider how to keep the retail payments system “convenient, efficient, accessible universally, while being safe and resilient.” That’s where things get more speculative.

Future where crypto wins

Speaking over the weekend, BOJ Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida suggested something rarely said aloud by a central banker in Japan: if the BOJ fails in its core duty — price stability — people might stop trusting the yen. And in that case, he warned, another instrument could step in.

In a digitally advanced society, Uchida said, there is “no guarantee that currency issued by the central bank of a sovereign nation will continue to function as a generally acceptable payment instrument.” Although he didn’t drop any names, but he did suggest that cryptocurrencies and stablecoins might eventually step in to fill the gap.

Still, Uchida was careful to say he doesn’t expect cash to disappear “any time soon,” but the fact that he raised the prospect of crypto overtaking the yen — hypothetically or not — says a lot about how the conversation is shifting in central bank circles.

Where things stand now

As of mid-2025, Japan’s economy remains fragile. Inflation has been volatile, hovering just above 2% in recent months. Growth is slow, and the BOJ is still navigating the long tail of post-pandemic stimulus policies.

In that environment, digital payments have gained ground, not just through CBDC discussions, but in the real economy. Local surveys suggest younger consumers are increasingly turning to mobile apps and QR code systems. Crypto use is still modest compared to South Korea or the U.S., but it’s growing.

According to a report from Bitbank Ventures, there are over seven million active crypto accounts in Japan as of December 2024, up from five million in early 2024. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) remain the most commonly held, but stablecoins pegged to the yen or dollar are also gaining traction in cross-border commerce and remittances.

And then there’s regulation. Japan has long had some of the tightest crypto rules in the world. But lately, regulators have shown more flexibility, especially when it comes to stablecoins and their role in payment infrastructure.

The CBDC question

Even as crypto adoption rises, the BOJ is still very much focused on its own digital offering. The CBDC pilot is still in its active phase, involving tests with major Japanese banks like MUFG, SMBC, Mizuho, along with regional banks and fintech firms.

And while the digital yen isn’t live yet — and there’s still no official launch date — BOJ officials have been speaking out more about why it matters and the role it could play in Japan’s future economy. Uchida called the CBDC a “critical piece of infrastructure” that could help maintain public trust in the yen. Still, he emphasized that demand for cash will likely remain strong. At least in the near term.

Globally, the race is also heating up. The European Central Bank is doubling down on plans for a digital euro. And in the U.S., President Donald Trump’s executive order banning a digital dollar has expectedly pushed the debate forward — by politicizing it. His move, seen by some as an endorsement of crypto and stablecoins, is prompting other central banks to act faster.

For instance, as crypto.news reported earlier, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and other major banks are reportedly exploring a shared stablecoin to keep pace with rising competition. One idea reportedly being discussed is to let other banks use the stablecoin. Some regional and community banks have reportedly also explored a separate stablecoin consortium, though details remain unclear.

Japan may not be rushing. But it’s clearly preparing. And that preparation now includes at least entertaining the idea that crypto could become more than just a fringe asset.
