OpenAI hits $10b in annual revenue but posts $5b loss

by admin June 10, 2025

OpenAI has officially surpassed $10 billion in annual recurring revenue, driven by strong demand for its ChatGPT chatbot and related business products.

According to CNBC’s reporting, OpenAI hit this milestone in less than three years since the initial launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. According to an OpenAI spokesperson cited by CNBC, the ARR figure includes revenue from ChatGPT’s consumer and enterprise offerings, along with API services.

The actual revenue figure is likely even larger as reported revenue does not include licensing fees from Microsoft and one-off deals.

Profitability challenges remain

This revenue growth follows OpenAI’s reported $5.5 billion ARR from 2024, effectively nearly doubling in just a year.

However, CNBC notes that the hypergrowth comes at a cost. OpenAI reportedly posted a loss of about $5 billion in the same period, reflecting the capital-intensive nature of AI model development and infrastructure.

Regardless, the revenue milestone adds weight to OpenAI’s lofty valuation. The company raised $40 billion in a record-breaking funding round earlier this year and is now valued at roughly 30 times its current revenue.

Long-term ambitions

OpenAI is also setting its sights even higher, reportedly targeting $125 billion in revenue by 2029, according to CNBC, which cited a person familiar with internal targets.

As of March 2025, the company reported 500 million weekly active users and 3 million paying business customers, up from 2 million just a few months prior.

WWDC 2025: all the news from Apple’s annual developer conference

by admin June 9, 2025

The iPad is getting a big refresh this year: Apple just announced the new version of iPadOS, its tablet operating system, at WWDC. (Apple dropped its press releases before they were technically announced in the virtual event.) The flagship feature is a new windowing system for multitasking across apps, but there’s also a new Files app, more Apple Intelligence features, and a Mac-like Preview app for looking at and editing PDFs.

As usual, the new iPadOS has a lot in common with the new iOS, including the new Vision Pro-inspired visual language called “Liquid Glass.” The updated name also follows Apple’s overall scheme, switching from version numbers to years. The iPad tends to differ in its approach to multitasking, how you move between apps, and around the operating system. With iPadOS 26, that difference is more stark than ever: Apple says it will let you “fluidly resize app windows” and place windows anywhere you want on the screen. The windowing system can be used inside of Stage Manager, too, and works across displays. Stage Manager has not always been the most intuitive of iPad software, but this looks like a solid next step toward proper multitasking.

New York unveils details for its first annual NYC Video Game Festival

by admin May 29, 2025

Cities around the world have been showing their enthusiasm for gaming as an educational tool, and New York City is helping to lead that charge with its first annual NYC Video Game Festival on Saturday, May 31. The day-long event will feature esports competitions, arcades, and indie game demos, all taking place at Convene Brookfield Place in lower Manhattan.

The NYC Video Game Festival will also host the finals of the fifth-annual Minecraft Education Battle of the Boroughs Esports competition. The competition has fostered creativity among the school kids of New York City as they’re tasked with solving some of the city’s challenges using the tools within Minecraft. For example, last year, kids were tasked with designing a new Brooklyn Army Terminal Climate Innovation Hub.

Each borough of New York City will be sending three finalist teams (representing elementary, middle, and high school) for a total of 15 teams competing.

In addition to the Minecraft competition, New York-based colleges will be sending their best and brightest Fortnite and Valorant players to compete in the 2025 Collegiate Championship. One of the teams competing is The Quad Gods, the world’s first all-quadriplegic esports team, which was recently featured in an HBO Documentary.

The May 31 event is just the beginning, as New York City is planning on hosting a variety of gaming events over the next several months as part of its NYC Summer of Games initiative. A full rundown of all of this summer’s events can be found here.

Polygon is thrilled to partner with New York City as part of this event, which has allowed kids to really prove that games have the ability to solve real-life challenges. We hope to see you there!

‘Grand Theft Auto’ Publisher Swaps DEI for ‘Diversity of Thought’ in Annual Report

by admin May 29, 2025

Take-Two Interactive, the publisher behind Grand Theft Auto VI, is forgoing any mention of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts and promoting “diversity of thought” in its latest annual report.

The change, first spotted by Game File, is part of the company’s annual 10-K report, which offers insight into the company’s business, financials, and risk factors. In 2024, the report included a robust section about DEI, expressing support for groups working to “eradicate social injustice,” LGBTQ+ rights, and minority game design students, and “celebrating cultural differences” through employee groups.

In the 2025 report, Take-Two only mentions diversity in one area: “We firmly believe that diversity of thought drives the innovation that is integral to our success.” The report adds that the company aims “to provide an inclusive workplace in which everyone feels respected, heard, and safe,” but does not include commitments to provide scholarships to minority game design students, which were made in 2024.

“By empowering our colleagues to embrace an entrepreneurial mindset and to take calculated risks, we believe that we have created an environment where our people can thrive,” the report reads.

The move is part of a growing trend of companies rolling back their DEI initiatives amid a crackdown on anything perceived as DEI by the Trump administration.

DEI efforts in the video game industry have grown since the early days of gaming, but it wasn’t until 2020 that major companies began to throw support behind minority developers in acknowledgement of greater systemic issues. After George Floyd was murdered by police, companies began to vocally support movements like Black Lives Matter and pledged to help marginalized developers. As President Donald Trump has been cracking down on DEI in both the public and private sector, however, those efforts may now be in danger.

Reached by WIRED, a spokesperson for Take-Two declined to comment. The company’s website still includes a statement that says it believes “more diverse teams are more valuable and effective. Diversity is key to our success.”

DEI backlash, which has most recently spread across companies in fields like tech and retail, has a firm foothold in gaming communities. Last year, an online harassment movement styling itself as “Gamergate 2.0” attacked consultancy companies hired to provide guidance and advice on cultural sensitivities and created lists that deemed even a whiff of anything non-white, cis-male, and heterosexual as DEI. In modding communities, mods for games like The Sims 4 are being created to remove LGBT and Black non-player characters from the game.

The language in Take-Two’s report echoes that of companies like Meta, which said it would seek “cognitive diversity” in its own 10-K earlier this year, as it ended its own DEI programs.

The Entertainment Software Association, which organized the now-defunct E3 and acts as an advocate for the video game industry among regulators and lawmakers, declined to comment about the impact of DEI rollbacks in video games. Instead, a spokesperson directed WIRED to the ESA’s “Inclusion & Belonging” page on its website, which champions representation and that “the video game community is vast and diverse.”
