This Wireless Tech Could Fix the Most Annoying Thing About Using Wireless Earbuds at Home

Your phone is usually attached to your hip (in terms of the recent iPhone 17’s Crossbody Strap, I mean that literally). But in the comfort of your own home when you’re trying to unwind and escape your phone with your favorite music, needing to stay in Bluetooth range for your headphones and wireless earbuds can be a little annoying. Qualcomm’s audio engineers are trying to solve that issue by seamlessly switching to Wi-Fi if you travel away from your audio source. Sure, that sounds neat, but the tech implies a future where you won’t even need any other device nearby to listen to your favorite tunes on your AirPods.

I can already hear the whining in the comments. The problem this feature hopes to fix is a very niche use case, but it’s one that could end up in many next-gen wireless earbuds in the near future. I tested out this feature at Snapdragon Summer in Hawaii (full disclosure: travel and lodging were paid by Qualcomm, and Gizmodo did not guarantee any coverage as a condition of accepting the trip), dubbed XPAN for “Expanded Personal Area Network,” with a pair of nonspecific reference wireless earbuds used by Qualcomm. With the feature enabled, the buds work with the phone to detect if the device is in Bluetooth range. If you start walking away, they will automatically switch over to Wi-Fi.

In many ways, the tech is far more interesting than the end result. The wireless earbuds contained a Wi-Fi antenna, though neither the case nor the buds looked much different from what I’ve used in the past. I walked 30 feet away from the phone and back, and I didn’t notice any interruptions in the song playing. The phone showed how it was swapping from a P2P (peer-to-peer) connection through various other connection types. A Bluetooth 5.3 connection range is technically close to 33 feet. While that means you won’t lose connection walking from one end of the room to the other, intervening walls or—in my case—a crowd of bodies could interrupt that signal. XPAN merely expands the range to encompass everywhere there’s a Wi-Fi signal.

Although wireless earbuds with the technology will be limited to local Wi-Fi, the technology could potentially allow you to listen to your device from “anywhere in the world” through a Wi-Fi access point. Dino Bekis, Qualcomm’s general manager of connectivity, told me in a Q&A that there’s no issue with latency on a Wi-Fi connection compared to Bluetooth. Modern wireless earbuds are already so damn good at cutting down on latency even when streaming high-bitrate lossless audio. Wi-Fi networks should be able to handle the 96kHz speeds necessary for lossless. It shouldn’t matter if you’re still using Wi-Fi 6 or the modern Wi-Fi 7 standard, either.

“Today, with XPAN, it’s 96kHz 24-bit, but we see that evolving to 192kHz to be truly lossless,” Bekis said.

Qualcomm has talked up Wi-Fi audio connections for the past two years with its previous-gen S7 and S7 Pro platforms. The first wireless earbuds with XPAN built in were the Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro released earlier this year. They support the 96kHz standard, though Bekis promised we should see more wireless earbuds soon enough with current or future S7 chips. Audiophiles would still extol the benefits of lossless and minimum latency. Regular folk who just want to listen to their tunes simply care that they need to be within close range of their paired music source. Still, the feature may end up being more useful for taking calls with your wireless earbuds than for listening to music.

Inevitably, it seems our wireless earbuds will become as connected as our phones are today. What that means for music listeners is a future where we connect to Spotify or Apple Music right from our wireless earbuds’ or headphones’ case, rather than needing to go through a phone. I don’t think we’ll need to wait long to see more wireless earbuds cases with screens used to control music. Hell, if you were longing for a device as dedicated to music as your old iPod, a Wi-Fi-enabled pair of wireless earbuds could fit the bill. You’ll still have to pay your tithe to your favorite music streaming app, of course.

Xbox Has A Fix For The Most Annoying Thing About PC Gaming

PC gaming is wonderful. You can customize games as much as you desire, run them at high framerates, and enjoy all sorts of other useful advantages. But one really annoying part of gaming on a PC in 2025 is dealing with shader compilation. Thankfully, Microsoft is rolling out a solution, but it might take some time before you get to enjoy its benefits.

Over the last few years, game developers have started implementing shader compilation on PC. The idea is for your GPU to compile as many of the shaders that will be used during gameplay as possible ahead of time and limit how much stuttering you feel while playing. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s a pretty good way to improve how well games play on your PC. But the big problem with compiling shaders is that it takes time, and you’re often left looking at a screen for a few minutes or more, depending on your PC and how many shaders the game needs to compile. In theory, you only have to do this once at startup. But in reality, you’ll likely do it a few times, as big updates or changes you make to the game’s settings can force another shader compilation. I have even run into games, like Borderlands 4, that compile shaders mid-game when fast-traveling for the first time. It’s all very annoying, but thankfully, Microsoft has a solution that is now in the wild.

As spotted by PC Gamer, Microsoft’s Agility software development kit, a collection of game development tools for DirectX, has been updated to 1.618 and now supports Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD). This tech, which was announced last month, is Microsoft’s plan to get rid of those annoying shader compiling screens. The basic idea is that instead of your GPU and PC compiling all the shaders at game boot, ADS will contain a large database of pre-compiled shaders for various hardware and API setups. So you download a game and it includes all the shaders you’ll need, already compiled offline and ready to go.

This is essentially how consoles get around having to compile shaders when booting up a game, but it’s much easier over there, as devs only have to manage a few setups. In the world of PC gaming, there are many, many different hardware configurations to deal with, making it trickier to pre-compile everything.  But AMD, Intel, and Nvidia are all working together alongside Microsoft to provide devs and storefronts with everything they’ll need to pre-compile shaders for as many hardware variations as possible, and then offer these to consumers when they buy digital games.

For now, ADS is only available on Microsoft’s Xbox Store app and only when using the Asus ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X handhelds, which both launch on October 16.  It’ll likely be a few years before ADS is a normal feature included in most big stores and games, but at least there’s hope. One day, not too far in the future, we’ll all be free from having to wait for every big PC game to compile shaders. Doesn’t that sound nice?

The Beast Is Being Ruined By An Annoying Rain Bug

I’m really enjoying Dying Light: The Beast, the latest open-world zombie RPG from Techland. However, when it starts to rain in The Beast, the game starts to become a hard-to-play mess that is ruining what is otherwise a damn fine experience. Thankfully, the devs are aware and are working on a patch.

Originally planned to be a big DLC expansion for 2022’s Dying Light 2, Techland eventually realized it was big enough to be its own standalone game. And after playing about 16 hours of the zombie RPG–which is out now on consoles and sees the return of OG protagonist Kyle Crane–I think it might end up being one of my favorite games of 2025. Techland has once again successfully blended horror, parkour, and melee-focused action into something great. Setting the whole game in the gorgeous Swiss Alps also doesn’t hurt. But apparently, in the Alps, they have much more powerful rainstorms than over here.

Last night, while in the middle of a quest to grab some special gas that attracts super zombies, it started to rain. “No big deal,” I thought to myself, unaware of what I was about to experience. When I reached a large refinery containing a secret lab where the gas was located, I fought my way in and discovered that uh, the rain was falling through the building. And making things worse, the game’s lighting tech seemed (understandably) unprepared for such an event to occur, and it became very dark and incredibly hard to see where I was going. I pressed on and discovered the super rain also appeared in cutscenes.

Once I got a big can of the super gas, I took it to a nearby truck and popped it in the back to more easily get it to my destination. Weirdly, the rain outside was gone. Props still looked wet, and I could hear the rain falling, yet nothing was falling from the sky. When I got in the truck I discovered that, as far as the game was concerned, it wasn’t raining anymore, which was awkward as my windshield was still being drenched in water, but the wipers wouldn’t work. The only way I could get the wipers to function was to run over zombies and get enough blood on the glass to trigger them. Eventually, I just drove backwards, as the truck’s rear window wasn’t covered in rain.

Techland has a fix incoming for Dying Light‘s indoor rain

After winning a boss fight and returning to a safe zone to complete the quest, I decided to reset the game, which did put a stop to the strange weather. But now I fear the rain’s return. Thankfully, Techland is working on a patch that it plans to push out very soon.

“We’re aware that you’re experiencing issues with Indoor Rain and the Disturbed Day/Night Cycle, and fixing them is our top priority,” said Techland in an update posted to Steam over the weekend. “We already have a fix prepared, but because this bug only appears in rare situations, it takes a lot of extra testing. We’ll continue these tests over the weekend and most of Monday, and if no new occurrences of this issue appear, we’ll release the hotfix to players right away on PC. This is our goal. If, however, we still spot any occurrences of the bug, we might need to go back, adjust the fix, and then re-test it again.”

So that’s good news. But even after the patch, I’ll still be nervous that the super rain will return. Perhaps it’s the same horrible rain we dealt with years ago in the remastered version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? Where will this annoying rain appear next? Is any game safe? We’ll keep you updated on the rain situation as it continues.

Update: 9/22/2025, 12:55 p.m. ET: Just a few moments after posting this, Techland pushed out the rain-fixing patch on PC. The developer says the update is coming to consoles “soon.”

Fornite Is Ditching One Of The Most Annoying Things About V-Bucks

You want to buy something in a video game. Maybe it’s a battle pass. Maybe it’s a Sonic skin. Maybe it’s the current Halo Master Chief skin. That one costs 1,500 V-Bucks, but V-Bucks only come in packs of 400 or 1,000. You now have 300 leftover V-Bucks and Epic Games has your extra money. It’s scammy and it sucks. Thankfully, it’s also going away.

“Starting October 14, we’re adding an Exact Amount offer to the Fortnite V-Bucks purchasing page that lets you ‘top up’ your V-Bucks balance to the exact amount needed for the item you’re trying to buy,” the company announced on Thursday. “Let’s say you want an item that costs 500 V-Bucks but you only have 400 V-Bucks in your account. You’ll be able to buy just the 100 V-Bucks needed.”

The improved payment option is coming to Rocket League and Fall Guys as well, and will be available across Xbox, Switch, PC, mobile, and…not PlayStation 4 and PS5? “We will work to make this available everywhere,” the blog post reads. Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Forcing players to buy extra currency by mismatching it with microtransaction prices is a tale as old as digital downloads on console. Platforms like Xbox were once infamous for making players buy games with points instead of real currency, a practice that didn’t end until 2013. It was such a big deal when it changed that Microsoft made the announcement at that year’s E3.

Fortnite‘s “top-up” option comes a couple of years after Epic reached a $245 million settlement with the FTC over “dark patterns” that tricked players into unwanted purchases.

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s early mods sand off its more annoying edges, including double damage and distant spawns

Shhhhh. If we’re quiet, we might be able to avoid discourse with this one. If you’ve spent your weekend playing Hollow Knight: Silksong and found that the likes of enemies inflicting double damage and spawns being miles away put a dampner on the fun, mods can help.

I know, I know, these are videogames and we must take their difficulty with the utmost seriousness. How else are any of us supposed to learn important life lessons, like ‘press button dodge at this point’, unless we go through hours of frustration trying to beat one boss (or look such info up)? As such, I stress that these mods, like all mods, are entirely optional. No need to shout at people for using them. Save your voice for singing love ballads to Hornet during breaks in the action.

Right, now I’ve addressed the very powerful elephant in the room, let’s take a gander at Skong’s Nexus Mods page, which has filled out nicely now the metroidvania’s got a weekend under its belt. Silksong’s most endorsed mod thus far is one by Baiker that stops enemies and “normal bosses” from dishing out double damage, while leaving hazards free to keep on punishing you. Don’t look at the comments on it, if you’ve not got your internet argument observation popcorn handy.

Also up there in both the download and endorsement rankings is a mod from XiaoHaiNB, which adds health bars and damage numbers to baddies. Probably my favourites so far are the death counters. You’ve got a choice of two from modders Rexxah and NordboDev, and they’ll just sit there on your HUD, reminding you how many times your abilities have proven to be a bit too hollow shite.

Going back to the easening up, there’s ‘Stakes of Marika – Rebirth Anywhere’ from modder Kassent. As you might expect, this one takes a bit of inspiration from FromSoft’s Ancient Hoop by ensuring that “when you die in a scene, you will respawn at the scene entrance instead of at a bench miles away”. It also lets you set custom respawn points, which is cool.

For those annoyed by Silksong’s insistence on not being able to check where you are on the map at a glance, there’s ‘Always Have Compass Effect’ by Synthlight, which does what it says on the tin. The same modder’s stepped in with a mod that makes delivery items less fragile than a shipment of unpacked wine glasses precariously balanced to form a 20 foot tall tower and positioned next to some partially lit fireworks.

The final mod that’s caught my eye so far is this one for lore enthusiasts, which ensures you only have to kill a single enemy to be able to read their species’ journal entry.

Make sure to check the requirements of each of these if you fancy giving them a go, as most require the likes of BepInEx and MelonLoader to get up and running.
