Payday devs Starbreeze cancel their mystery Dungeons & Dragons game and announce plans to lay off around 44 staff

by admin October 2, 2025

Starbreeze have cancelled Project Baxter, the co-op live service Dungeons & Dragons game they announced back in 2023. Part of the development team have been transferred to other projects with Starbreeze, while the remainder get to “transition to new roles across the industry”.

Starbreeze have told us little about Project Baxter over the years, beyond characterising it as an action-adventure that reflects their “lifetime commitment” to Games-as-a-Service, and stating that it would support PC and console crossplay. They announced it with a couple of artworks – one depicting a close-cropped mage in a cape, the other some pointy roofs and pennants. The game surely would have built upon Starbreeze’s established, albeit recently eroded reputation for co-op heisting. Now, however, Starbreeze bosses have decided that doubling down on Payday is the safer route forward.

“This was a difficult but necessary decision,” comments CEO Adolf Kristjansson in a release to investors. “Our strategy is clear: Payday is one of the most iconic IPs in gaming, with unmatched reach and potential. By focusing our investment and talent here, we can accelerate delivery, engage players with more content, and reinforce Starbreeze’s position as the clear leader in the heisting genre. This is about sharpening our focus to create the strongest long-term value for our players, our people, and our shareholders.”

Around 44 people, spanning employees and contractors, are to lose their roles at Starbreeze in the course of writing off Baxter. The press release adds that “the discontinuation of Baxter, combined with an increased focus on the Payday franchise, will enable Starbreeze to become cash-flow positive in 2026.” For context, cash-flow positive means you have more money coming in over a given period, than going out – it’s not the same as being overall profitable. Starbreeze made a huge loss in their financial year 2024 after a catastrophic launch showing for Payday 3.

Kristjansson ends the release by thanking the Baxter team and D&D license owners Wizards of the Coast, adding that work on Baxter “will carry forward into Payday and the future of Starbreeze”. Maybe they should give the laid-off Baxter team members a Special Thanks credit in Payday 4, assuming that’s next on the agenda. Best of luck to everybody affected.

Just Cause Devs Announce UK Studio Closure And Layoffs

by admin September 30, 2025

Just Cause and Mad Max developer Avalanche Studios is closing up a studio in the United Kingdom and is laying off an undisclosed number of employees due to “current challenges to our business and the industry.”

On September 30, Avalanche Studios Group posted a short update on the company’s official site announcing that its UK development studio in Liverpool is being closed and that all employees will be “impacted.” Avalanche also confirmed in the same statement that layoffs are planned for its Swedish studios located in Malmö and Stockholm. The news of layoffs and a studio closure comes about two months after Avalanche and Xbox announced that the upcoming game Contraband was canceled.

Here’s Avalanche’s full statement as posted online:

In light of current challenges to our business and the industry, we have thoroughly reviewed how to best ensure Avalanche Studios Group’s long-term success. This review has led us to the difficult conclusion that we must make changes to our staffing and locations. As a result, we are proposing to close our Liverpool studio, and to initiate a collective consultation process, as required by UK law. This will impact all Avalanchers in Liverpool. The changes will also impact our other studio locations in Malmö and Stockholm, where we will reduce our workforce and restructure the teams to address our games’ needs.

Our immediate focus is to offer full support to all Avalanchers during this challenging time. Despite these changes, we remain deeply committed to providing amazing games to our passionate player communities.

Contraband was first announced back in 2021 and was going to be published by Xbox and developed primarily by Avalanche’s studio in Liverpool. However, four years later, we had heard very little about the game and its status. In August 2025, Xbox and Avalanche announced what most people expected: Development on Contraband was being halted as the studio “evaluated” the future of the game and its plans moving forward. And while the game isn’t mentioned directly in the statement above, it appears those involved with the evaluation have settled on layoffs.

This is just one of many, many, many layoffs to happen in the video game industry over the last few years as it becomes more expensive to develop bigger games and harder than ever to get people to play them, as titles like Fortnite, GTA Online, Call of Duty, and Roblox dominate the charts. And even if your game is a big hit, that doesn’t mean you’re safe.

US And UK Announce Partnership For New Crypto Regulatory Framework

by admin September 23, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

The United States and the United Kingdom have announced the formation of a “task force for markets of the future,” aimed to enhance cooperation on capital markets and crypto regulation.

UK And US Unite To Tackle Crypto Market Challenges

The agreement was reached during talks in Downing Street between UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, just ahead of President Donald Trump’s state visit to Britain.

While the announcement came with limited specifics regarding the focus areas of the task force, it underscores a mutual interest in fostering collaboration in the growing digital asset market.

The backdrop for this initiative is particularly relevant, as the UK has been grappling with a prolonged downturn in its capital markets. Many companies have opted to relocate their listings from London to New York, attracted by the promise of higher valuations and a more favorable regulatory environment.

Meanwhile, the US has actively embraced the cryptocurrency industry under the current Trump administration, appointing crypto-friendly regulators, dismissing lawsuits against major players, and enacting landmark legislation governing stablecoins.

In contrast, the UK has faced criticism from crypto executives for its slow regulatory response, which has left it trailing behind the US and other competitive financial hubs.

The UK Treasury has indicated that the new task force will explore options for both short- and medium-term collaboration on digital assets while regulatory frameworks are still being developed. Additionally, the group will aim to streamline the process for UK and US firms seeking to raise capital across borders.

Collaboration For Change

Chaired by officials from both the UK and US Treasury departments, the task force is expected to include regulators responsible for overseeing capital markets and crypto assets on both sides of the Atlantic. It is tasked with reporting back within 180 days with recommendations on how best to proceed.

Former Conservative Chancellor George Osborne has been vocal about the challenges facing the UK in the crypto space, warning that the country risks becoming irrelevant amid a financial revolution reminiscent of the “Big Bang” era of the 1980s.

Osborne, who currently serves on the global advisory council of US-based crypto exchange Coinbase, has criticized the current government’s approach, suggesting that it is leaving the UK lagging behind.

The UK Crypto asset Business Council, a trade organization, welcomed the announcement of the task force, viewing it as a strong endorsement from the US of the UK economy. They emphasized that if executed correctly, this initiative has the potential to invigorate the City of London and strengthen the transatlantic economy.

The daily chart shows the market’s total capitalization at $3.8 trillion. Source: TOTAL on TradingView.com

U.S. and U.K. to Announce Closer Cooperation on Crypto Regulation

by admin September 16, 2025

The UK and the US are set to announce a new agreement on digital assets, with the goal of adopting closer regulatory alignment and boosting investment. The move, which comes amid President Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK, is seen as a direct response to growing concerns that British companies are falling behind their US counterparts in the digital asset space.

On the other side of the Atlantic, businesses want higher valuations. Because of this, they are shifting their listings from the London Stock Exchange to the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. This has caused a lot of political stress, which has now been followed by a push.

The topic about closer cooperation between both the countries was a central one during a meeting between UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Tuesday.

The discussion included key figures from major financial institutions and crypto firms like Coinbase, Circle, and Ripple, as well as banks such as Citi and Bank of America. According to Financial Times the meeting was organized following a letter from UK crypto industry groups urging the government to prioritize digital assets during the state visit.

Change in UK Strategy

The agreement represents a shift for the UK, which has been criticized by some in the industry for its cautious regulatory approach. The Trump administration has taken a more supportive stance toward the crypto industry, and UK officials believe that aligning with US policies is “vital to unlocking adoption” in Britain.

Former Conservative Chancellor George Osborne, now with Coinbase, has publicly stated that the UK is being “completely left behind” in the cryptocurrency sector. This sentiment is shared by many in the British crypto community who feel that regulatory uncertainty is driving businesses to more favorable jurisdictions, particularly the US.

Stablecoins and Digital Sandboxes

The new agreement is expected to specifically address stablecoin cryptocurrencies pegged to traditional currencies. The UK and US are reportedly working on developing digital securities sandboxes. These would allow companies to test blockchain-based financial services in a controlled environment.

The concept of a joint US-UK digital sandbox was previously proposed by SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce to give regulators more data and allow companies to serve both markets simultaneously.

Reeves had previously emphasized the need for the UK’s capital markets to remain competitive and has noted Commissioner Peirce’s proposals for collaboration on digital topics. While the Treasury declined to comment on the specifics of the new proposals, Reeves’ public statements underscore the government’s focus on attracting investment and strengthening the UK’s financial sector.

Microsoft and OpenAI announce the ‘next phase’ of their partnership

by admin September 12, 2025

Microsoft and OpenAI have issued a joint statement to say that they have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding for the “next phase” of their partnership. The companies are still finalizing the terms of agreement and haven’t shared the details of what their future would look like exactly. But according to The New York Times, the deal includes hows the parties share technology and and the revenue from those technologies. The new agreement also reportedly modifies the clause in the original, which states that Microsoft cannot access OpenAI’s most powerful technology if its board decides that it has reached human-like artificial general intelligence or AGI.

In addition to the new deal, The Times says OpenAI is giving an equity stake worth at least $100 billion to its nonprofit arm that will continue to oversee and control the organization. As the publication notes, a change in the company’s agreement paves the way for OpenAI to transition into a public benefit corporation, a type of corporation that’s meant to make a positive impact on society, and for an eventual IPO. OpenAI had to reach an acceptable agreement with Microsoft first, including how much equity it’s getting in the AI firm’s for-profit arm. Microsoft had invested over $13 billion into OpenAI and is entitled to 49 percent of its future profits.

Reports about OpenAI moving away from its complicated non-profit structure started coming out last year. After Christmas in 2024, it officially announced its plan to transform itself into a public benefit corporation with ordinary shares of stock. “It will enable us to raise the necessary capital with conventional terms like others in this space,” it said at the time. In May, however, OpenAI announced that it was no longer going to remove the control of its for-profit arm from its non-profit board. “OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit, and is today overseen and controlled by that nonprofit. Going forward, it will continue to be overseen and controlled by that nonprofit,” it said.

CoD devs announce more iconic Black Ops 2 maps will return in Black Ops 7

by admin September 10, 2025

Treyarch have confirmed that there are more remastered Black Ops 2 maps coming to Black Ops 7 after Raid, Express, and Hijacked.

Remaking and remastering fan-favorite maps is something that Call of Duty developers have been doing for a while. Modern Warfare 3 (2023) even went a step further and only launched with remastered maps from the original Modern Warfare 2 (2009).

The nostalgia hit of an older map is what some fans look forward to, especially when it is something that hasn’t been redone for a while. So, when it was announced that Raid, Express, and Hijacked would be coming to Black Ops 7, CoD fans were delighted.

Raid has, of course, been redone a few times, and we’ve seen Express return, but Hijacked hasn’t. However, there are other Black Ops 2 classics still to follow.

BO7 devs confirm more Black Ops 2 maps to come

During their September 9 developer update, Treyarch’s Matt Scronce and Brittany Pirello confirmed that more remastered maps are going to be added.

“We are going to get some more Black Ops 2 remasters. I don’t want to give away too many spoilers, but I have been reading the replies and some of you have guessed correctly,” Scornce teased.

Pirello then confirmed that there will be remastered maps in the Call of Duty League. “So, you’ve already seen Raid and Express, and we are expecting to have some more coming out post-launch,” she added.

The team’s here to talk MP maps in our new Dev Talk video, including:

Scornce continued that there have to be conversations with the CDL over what maps could be in the competitive pool, but noted that one map is returning for the first time since Black Ops 2.

“I will say that one of the ones that is coming back for the first time since Black Ops 2 was a competitive map in Black Ops 2. It was played in Search and Destroy, and I’ll leave you with that little teaser,” he said.

Pirello also teased the return of Yemen, quoting OpTic Gaming’s Seth ‘Scump’ Abner’s iconic “Who’s the best in the game?” callout.

AMD and IBM announce collaboration to build quantum centric supercomputing architectures

by admin August 28, 2025

  • IBM and AMD partner to combine quantum and high performance computing
  • Collaboration aims to accelerate research in fields from drug discovery to logistics
  • Companies plan open source platforms and hybrid workflows with initial demo soon

IBM and AMD have announced plans to “build the future of computing” by collaborating on new architecture to blend quantum systems with high-performance hardware in a bid to solve some of the world’s most difficult problems.

The partnership will combine IBM’s expertise in building quantum computers and related software with AMD’s background in processors, graphics, and AI accelerators in a step toward quantum-centric supercomputing.

The companies are looking at ways in which to integrate AMD CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs with IBM’s quantum computers, with the ultimate goal to accelerate emerging algorithms that neither quantum nor classical systems can handle on their own.

Pushing past the limits

“Quantum computing will simulate the natural world and represent information in an entirely new way,” said Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO, IBM.

“By exploring how quantum computers from IBM and the advanced high-performance compute technologies of AMD can work together, we will build a powerful hybrid model that pushes past the limits of traditional computing.”

The two tech giants will work together to build open-source platforms that can scale and support research in fields such as drug development, materials science, and supply chain optimization.

Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD, also emphasized the importance of the partnership, saying, “High-performance computing is the foundation for solving the world’s most important challenges. As we partner with IBM to explore the convergence of high-performance computing and quantum technologies, we see tremendous opportunities to accelerate discovery and innovation.”

AMD has previously worked on some of the world’s fastest supercomputers, including Frontier and El Capitan.

This hybrid approach is also expected to support IBM’s roadmap toward fault-tolerant quantum computing, a milestone the company has said it hopes to reach before the end of the decade.

IBM has already begun similar work with other partners including Riken in Japan, as well as institutions like Cleveland Clinic and Lockheed Martin.

An initial demonstration is planned for later this year and will show how IBM quantum computers can work alongside AMD technology to deliver hybrid quantum-classical workflows.

The partnership will support open-source ecosystems, such as Qiskit, in a bid to encourage the development of algorithms for quantum-centric supercomputing.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are “End Game.”

The pop superstar and the three-time Super Bowl champion took to social media to reveal they are engaged to be married.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the duo captioned a series of photos in a joint Instagram post, which garnered 1.2 million likes in its first 10 minutes.

The couple’s engagement comes on the heels of a romance that captivated football and pop culture fans alike since Week 3 of the 2023 NFL season.

In Dec. 2023, Swift reflected on the origin of her oft-dissected relationship with Kelce in an article for Time Magazine Person of the Year.

“This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell,” Swift told Time.

“We started hanging out right after that. So we actually had a significant amount of time that no one knew, which I’m grateful for, because we got to get to know each other. By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple. I think some people think that they saw our first date at that game? We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date.”

Proposing to your 14-time Grammy Award-winning girlfriend two weeks after she announces her new album on your podcast and the week before football season officially commences? So high school, indeed.

New York Yankees announce George Costanza sleeping bobblehead giveaway

The New York Yankees are again honoring their “assistant to the traveling secretary” this season.

The first 18,000 fans at the Yankees’ Thursday matchup against the Boston Red Sox received a bobblehead of George Costanza sleeping under his desk. It coincided with “Seinfeld Night” at Yankee Stadium. Fans made sure to arrive as early as five hours before first pitch to snag the bobblehead.

The figurine depicts Costanza, played by Jason Alexander and one of the main characters of the hit show “Seinfeld,” sleeping on the job during the Season 8 episode “The Nap.” Above Costanza sleeping is one of his quotes from the episode: “I love a good nap. Sometimes it’s the only thing getting me out of bed in the morning.”

In the 1997 episode, Costanza, played by Jason Alexander, decides to sleep under his desk in his office. He then recruits a handyman to expand the space under his desk for more headroom, a shelf for an alarm clock, a drawer for a blanket and a cup holder.

“This is better than my bed at home,” he says once it’s complete.

Costanza then tests it out and takes a nap. But then-Yankees owner George Steinbrenner — voiced by show co-creator Larry David — soon enters Constanza’s office looking for him. When he can’t find him, he waits inside. Eventually, Costanza phones Jerry Seinfeld and asks him to make a fake emergency call so Steinbrenner will leave the building.

The Yankees also released a bobblehead of Costanza during a game against the Red Sox last season. In that one, Costanza is in his batting stance while wearing a dress shirt and pants combination.

Crowds lined up four hours before first pitch during the Costanza giveaway last season.
