Tony Gilroy Is Very Sad at How Relevant ‘Andor’ Has Become

by admin August 21, 2025

When Tony Gilroy began his Andor journey, his original pitch was deemed “pretty mad and undoable” by Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunner revealed how that initial take would later get revisited after Lucasfilm gave it some thought.

“They came back to me and said, ‘We looked at this memo from a year and a half ago, and it makes a lot more sense to us now,’” he recalled. That, of course, led to a series expanding on the very foundation that Star Wars creator George Lucas had in mind when he began the beloved saga: Space Nazis are bad, and the rebellion is coming.

Around the time award nominations were announced for the show’s critically acclaimed second season, real-world headlines eerily mirrored events seen in Andor. In particular, a scene in the Emmy-nominated episode “Welcome to the Rebellion,” which depicts a Ghorman senator being carted off by stormtroopers as he says, “My people today and yours tomorrow; remember Ghorman!” struck a very timely nerve.

It’s a devastating series of events that’s not lost on Gilroy. “When I started on the show, the parallels between what was happening in the world and what was happening in the galaxy and the Empire—those were already obvious.” He explained that his inspiration came from a love of history and using that to embed the seeds of how totalitarianism has taken root in Star Wars.

“But over the six years we’ve been doing the show, that little monster got on its feet and learned how to run,” he said. “When [U.S. Senator for California Alex Padilla] was pulled out of the ICE meeting, like in the episode about the Ghorman senator being pulled out, there was a big text chain in our group like, ‘Oh my God. It looked like the show.’ It’s very sad for us how much it rhymes.”

While we continue to live in unprecedented times, the filmmaker notes that Andor feels like something he can’t see himself doing again. It’s disappointing, but as the state of the entertainment industry continues to evolve, it makes sense.

“For five and a half years, every single day of my life, I had a maximally imaginative involvement that was never complete—writing, designing, music, casting, all of it,” Gilroy said of the pandemic-era-born production. “Every demand on your imagination that could ever be asked was screaming for your attention. That’s a pretty heady place to live. I grew to love it. But I can’t imagine that I would ever be that fully engaged again,” he concluded, but we hold out hope the vast galaxy makes space for his return; we need these stories now more than ever.

How the Casting of ‘Andor’ Brought More Powerful Women to ‘Star Wars’

by admin August 20, 2025

The extraordinary ensemble seen in Andor exemplified the best of Star Wars and brought more iconic heroes and villains to the franchise in two unforgettable seasons. Led by Genevieve O’Reilly, reprising her role as Mon Mothma, the women of the Disney+ series really carved out their legacies within the Lucasfilm universe.

In a behind-the-scenes featurette for Andor, casting directors Nina Gold and Martin Ware discussed discovering the immense talents of the series’ key leading ladies. Elizabeth Dulau was an utter revelation as Kleya Marki, a season two standout as Luthen Rael’s right-hand spymaster. Gold described their search for Kleya: “Obviously, Stellan Skarsgård is completely a genius. We needed to find someone to play Kleya, who [while] a young woman, could match him in authority and intensity and could go toe-to-toe with him in all situations, and [Dulau] really did that.” We’d have to agree with the sentiment because even when Kleya was no longer sharing moments with Skarsgård’s Luthen, the actress shone in some all-timer scenes, in particular that fateful hospital mission.

Ware knew that finding an equal to match Skarsgård was key for their storyline’s eventual conclusion. “With Stellan, because he kind of plays two parts in a way for quite a lot of the show, the gallery owner requires quite a lot of lightness of touch, and then he’s got the darker side, so it was just finding…”

Gold jumped in, “…Finding someone who could do that journey with him. She really had this inner command and real authority.” And it’s one fans would love to see again if Gilroy ever revisits Andor‘s surviving characters.

An Imperial baddie who we want to see get a bigger cinematic comeuppance is Denise Gough’s Dedra Mero, the overachieving Empire social climber. Gold described the cutthroat villain as an “evil mastermind.” Gough was cast after the casting directors saw her and co-star Kyle Soller on stage. “This was a real amazing showcase for their brilliance on screen. Both of their characters have really gone through a full, really big journey to go from where they started, as she was a very impenetrable, authoritarian boss.”

Ware complimented Gough’s season two transformation. “In season two, Dedra’s character, we see her in a domestic setting. We see her at home. We see her dealing with Syril’s mum. And loving Syril in her own very strange, peculiar way.” But of course her ambition leads her to abandon the simple fascist family life for bigger things that blow up in her face.

Gold and Ware had their work cut out for them insofar as what Gilroy wanted for Cassian’s romantic partner, Bix. Thankfully they found it all with Adria Arjona. “[As] soon as she did her first five words of her first audition, it suddenly became really obvious that it must be her.”

Gold explained that Bix needed to be more than just a love interest and demonstrate that she too was a capable fighter within the rebellion, which Arjona easily handled. “She had such an incredible mix of the other kind of strength and resilience of Bix and the vulnerability and willingness to go through this immense journey that Bix has to go through. She was one of the few people who we were able to get in the room to do a chemistry test with Diego [Luna], and again that just cemented it very clearly that they were really meant to be playing these parts opposite each other.” And we agree that Arjona and Luna’s performances gave Andor its heart as well as the hope the show’s lead sacrificed so much for.

According to Ware, the casting process was shaped by both the script and Andor‘s creator. “The script alone is so detailed and precise about character and intention that it’s quite easy for us to start thinking about brilliant actors to bring them to life. But then Tony Gilroy also would love to talk about other thoughts he had on the characters before we headed out there making lists and auditioning actors.”

Gold added that Gilroy’s input along the way really brought out what the galaxy needed in its heroes and villains to serve the incredible overarching story Andor brought to our screens. “It was fascinating because Tony’s interest in character is so detailed and wonderful, and he’s very flexible in his thinking,” Gold said. “When he sees something in an actor that’s not necessarily the thing that he’d originally thought, he’s quite happy to make some changes in his thought process if it seems the right thing to do. And also the writing is so appealing to actors because it is so interesting and good.”

The trio don’t even round out the rest of the supremely talented actresses showcased in Andor, but the galaxy is a better place because of them, that’s for sure. Watch the clip below!

Disney’s Got a Cool ‘Andor’ Zine for Emmy Season

by admin August 18, 2025

With less than a month to go before the Emmys, Disney’s pulling out all the stops to make sure Andor takes home some gold. Not only did it recently release the script for “Welcome to the Rebellion,” one of its best season two episodes, it’s also getting the word out through the power of the press.

As Disney describes it, the REBELIÓN zine celebrates “our 14 Emmy® nominations, the filmmakers, talent, and incredible craftspeople who were responsible for bringing this show to life,” and has already been sent out to press and voters. Per a now-deleted tweet, Los Angeles residents can pick up a copy at locations like Atwater Village’s Secret Headquarters, Echo Park’s Stories and Heavy Manners Zine Library, while everyone else can peep the digital version here.

Within its pages are the pitch of Andor’s second season, propaganda posters featuring Cassian, Mon Mothma, and the Ghor, shots of key Empire characters, and concept art for the season. Showrunner Tony Gilroy also recently appeared at a pop-up event at West Hollywood’s Kiosk-O-Thèque, which you can see below.

REBELIÓN is some of the last Andor media we’re likely to get; season two’s likely getting a physical release, but the only other known work coming is the series’ art book in May 2026. Anyone looking to understand the show on a writing level is out of luck, since Gilroy previously said there’s no plans to publish the series’ full scripts as a means of safeguarding the show against generative AI. Too bad this is physical version isn’t for everyone.

The Emmys will air on Sunday, September 14, where we’ll see if Andor takes home any gold for its last season.

Tony Gilroy Knows ‘Andor’ Broke the Heart of Cassian and Jyn Shippers

by admin June 10, 2025

The adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) powered Andor‘s two epic seasons. But getting to know who he was through those he loves is what catapulted the character from Rogue One one-off into the pantheon of beloved Star Wars heroes. Seeing the added layers of his family and friend circle captivated audiences and introduced us to even more characters we hope to see more of in the future, including his partner and romantic interest, Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona). A rebel heroine in her own right, Caleen pretty much stole our hearts too, but dashed the hopes of Jyn Erso and Cassian shippers across the fandom galaxy.

The fleeting tension in Rogue One‘s elevator scene between the two rebels on the trail of the Death Star plans—who then embrace one another in their final moments—had the fandom taking the mere tease of a romance to mean more. It’s something Andor creator and Rogue One co-writer Tony Gilroy is well aware of.

“I knew very well what had happened with Jyn and Cassian in Rogue One and what had happened in the elevator,” he told Collider; it’s something he truncated in the process of re-working the film (there was a kiss shot originally).

“I knew that scene very, very well. I probably went back and looked at that. I was pleased to see that my memory of it was of all the other takes and other things, and I was really pleased to see how we’d edited that, that it was really ambiguous about what it was, and then I didn’t care anymore. I was like, ‘Okay. It makes sense.’”

He explained that Cassian and Bix’s love story realistically explores the dynamic of two people who have been in each other’s lives for longer than a mission, and who we meet while they’re very much not together. “I mean, they’re both pretty sexually liberated in their way,” he said. “I think that first kiss they had, I think the first person they ever slept with is each other. Who knows how old they were on Ferrix? Probably very, very young. And over time, they were together and not together.”

They’ve clearly had their own separate life experiences. “Timm starts off the show, and who’s in charge of that relationship, right?” Gilroy said, calling out Bix’s not-long-for-the-world jealous beau on Ferrix. “Cassian certainly has a rich history in just the little bit we see, and has alluded to, and his mother calls him out on all his girlfriends, and there’s Windi on Niamos. I think they have a very healthy idea of what the different calibrations of love are.”

So yes, Cassian and Jyn may have had a moment but its informed by the knowledge of their win against the Empire. “I mean, why wouldn’t you hold somebody’s hand at the end of the world?” Gilroy said. “I felt bad for the people who had invested so much time in the fan fiction and stuff like that. The people who really had gone deep on it. It’s not considered canon, and it’s not something I have to pay attention to, legally, within the order, but people worked hard on that stuff, and it meant a lot to them. You don’t want to trample on somebody’s flower garden, you know? But I have to do what I have to do.”

As the writer, who is actual steward of the lore, Gilroy at least offered his condolences for blasting the ship along with the Scarif shore Cassian and Jyn held each other on, stating, “I’m sure there’s somebody who will never get over that. I apologize. I really do.”
