Some shows appear and disappear almost overnight; others become institutions. Modern Family is in the latter category: more than five years after it finished it’s still one of the most watched shows on Disney+ globally.

Modern Family ran from 2009 to early 2020, and like any show with so many seasons it’s fair to say that it lost some of its freshness over time: where season 1 has a stellar 100% rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the final season – season 11 – only reached 80%. But that’s still a much higher rating than many rival sitcoms, and there’s still lots to praise.

Here’s why Modern Family is a modern classic and one of the best Disney+ shows – or best Hulu shows if you’re in the US – of all time.

Why this family is worth getting to know

The first season set up the premise for the show. An unidentified (to us) film crew is following the Dunphys around to make a fly-on-the-wall documentary about the extended family: mom and dad Claire and Phil and their three children; Claire’s dad Jay and his much younger wife Gloria; Jay’s son Mitchell, his partner Cameron and their adopted daughter.

As you can see, the setup justifies the title: this is a thoroughly modern family, multi-generational, multi-racial and inclusive of all. And if that’s all the show was about it would probably have been a disaster, preachy and worthy rather than punchy and hilarious. But the writing team is incredibly sharp, the dialog and set-pieces are often hilariously funny and the cast is spectacular. And I think its warmth and big heart really resonate with people whose screens increasingly seem to be blasting them with bad news.

The core cast is brilliant, and while some of the characterization comes close to stereotyping – the camp Cameron, the cantankerous Jay, the fiery Gloria – I don’t think it ever crossed over from affectionate to problematic.

You get the real feeling that the writers care about and love the entire cast – and what a cast it is. Ed O’Neill as Jay, Sofia Vergara as Gloria, Ty Burrell as Phil, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell, Julie Bowen as Claire and Eric Stonestreet as Cameron are all delightful. And with the show lasting so long – almost a lifetime for its youngest stars, most of whom were grown adults by the final seasons – everybody was given lots of time to grow.

The characters are all favorites for me but I think the show was most often stolen by Rico Rodriguez as Manny, the oldest young man ever to exist (and someone who I can’t separate from What We Do In The Shadows’ similarly entertaining Guillermo, played by Harvey Guillén).

NPR put it very well, describing season 1: “Good acting. Great writing. Human characters played by amazing actors. That might be the one twist network TV hasn’t tried often enough.”

Writing in Salon, Heather Havrilesky urged us not to touch that remote. “Between the snappy writing, great comedic directing, and remarkable timing of all of the actors involved, “Modern Family” is one of those rare comedies that never feels awkward or corny as it’s winding up to a punch line… laughter and families? Those two haven’t come together on TV in a long, long time. But once they do? It’s like science: You can’t fight it.” And Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly loved it too. “Modern Family is unique in the way it juggles so many players so deftly and makes every member of the cast a vivid, complex character,” he wrote. “Oh, and it’s really funny, too.”

Solana-Based Pump.fun Among List of Crypto Trading Platforms Suspended from X

The X account of Solana-based meme coin launchpad Pump.fun was suspended on Monday, along with a host of other crypto accounts removed from the platform without explanation.

The account now shows the standard message that “X suspends accounts which violate the X Rules,” but no further details were provided. Other affected accounts include trading tools such as BullX and GMGN, as well as the AI agent platform Eliza OS.

Some founders and affiliated team members were also impacted, including Pump.fun co-founder Alon Cohen and ElizaOS founder Shaw Walters.

GMGN, in a message on its Telegram, said it was “actively appealing the decision and working to restore the account as soon as possible.”

“During this time, our operations continue uninterrupted. Our team is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter and remains in close communication with the X to expedite a resolution,” GMGN added.

BullX claimed via Discord on June 13 that its account had been “mass reported.” It was previously under scrutiny after a viral post claimed it was shuttering. BullX said the claims were spread by “certain individuals with ulterior motives.”

Decrypt contacted Pump.fun, GMGN, and Eliza OS. It was unable to find contact information for BullX.

The reasons for the suspensions remain unclear.

Some X users speculated that the affected platforms were using unofficial APIs to scrape X data without paying for its premium developer tools.

Others pointed to a fake post circulating online, alleging that the SEC is investigating Pump.fun, although no such notice has appeared on the regulator’s official account.

Others still welcomed the shutdowns due to growing concern around the Solana meme coin ecosystem, where rug pulls are common, there is little oversight, and a number of projects have engaged in dangerous promotional tactics.

Among them, during live streams promoting meme coins on platforms like Pump.fun, several people have threatened to abuse others, cause self-harm, or commit suicide if their tokens failed to hit specific market caps.

One developer even staged a fake hanging, prompting Pump.fun to ban live streaming for promotions.

In May, Zerebro creator Jeffy Yu faked his suicide in a bid to boost his coin, even posting an obituary online, before local reporters discovered he was hiding out at his mom and dad’s house.

Bitget has committed to a three-year partnership with UNICEF Luxembourg to advance digital skills and blockchain literacy among young people through the Game Changers Coalition programme.

In a press release sent to crypto.news, Bitget pledges to support the women-focused program with the aim of reaching up to 300,000 participants in 2025. These participants include adolescent girls, parents, mentors and teachers with blockchain skills from eight regions; Armenia, Brazil, Cambodia, India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Morocco, and South Africa.

According to data from UNICEF, young women in low and middle-income countries miss out on $15 billion in economic opportunities due to a gap in internet access and digital skills compared to their male counterparts. As 90% of today’s job vacancies require digital skills, the Game Changers Coalition aims to close the gender skill gap.

Executive Director of UNICEF Luxembourg, Sandra Visscher believes that both the UN body and Bitget are in agreement that digital skills can become a powerful driver of opportunity and inclusion, especially in elevating young people.

“By collaborating with Bitget, we want to empower adolescent young people with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to shape their own futures,” said Visscher in her statement.

With the help of Bitget Academy, including support from the $10 million initiative Blockchain4Her, Bitget plans to enhance digital literacy and financial independence among women from an early age.

Bitget’s Blockchain4Her initiative has previously supported women through mentorship programs, funding opportunities, and educational resources. Another Bitget-led initiative, Blockchain4Youth also previously pledged $10 million in support of scholarships, workshops, and hackathons over five years.

Last April, Bitget teamed up with Avalanche to boost digital asset adoption and blockchain technology across various grassroot regions in India.

AI Sparks Fear and ‘Obsolescence’ Among UK Film Industry

Growth in the use of generative AI is provoking fears of job losses and “obsolescence” among individuals working in the UK film and screen sector, according to a new report commissioned by the British Film Institute.

Authored by researchers at the multi-institutional CoSTAR Foresight Lab, the report is the first UK-wide review of the impact AI is having on the British screen industry. It also highlights opportunities, challenges and threats related to the use of AI.

While acknowledging how AI innovations provide “growth opportunities for the UK screen and creative technology sectors,” the research also concludes that the unauthorized use of copyrighted material for training new models “poses a direct threat to the economic foundations of the UK screen sector.”

According to the report, sources of training data include scripts from over 130,000 films, TV programs and YouTube videos, with such a mining of content undermining the ability of the UK screen industry to “create value” from making and selling new content.

“As generative models learn the structure and language of screen storytelling—from text, images and video—they can then replicate those structures and create new outputs at a fraction of the cost and expense of the original works,” the researchers write. “These learned capabilities can be used to assist human creatives, but AI tools may also be used to compete against the original creators whose work they were trained on.”

Accordingly, the report devotes considerable attention to the consequences of AI for job numbers in the British screen industry, which currently adds £21 billion per year to the UK’s GDP and employs around 200,000 people, encompassing movies, TV and video games

It cites recent studies which show that, internationally, audiovisual creators are at risk of seeing their revenues decline by 21% in the next three years as a result in the growth of AI-generated content, while it also discusses a CVL Economics report which estimated that AI could disrupt over 200,000 entertainment jobs in the U.S. by 2026.

The researchers suggest that junior and entry-level positions are especially at risk, since such jobs often comprise the kind of routine tasks at which AI currently excels.

Yet this poses a serious problem, the report suggests, since “if generative AI automates entry-level jobs and tasks, it will limit routes into the screen sector.”

Introducing AI to British studios

Companies focused on integrating AI into entertainment production processes are mindful of such dangers, although they also emphasize that the overall impact on the British and international screen sector will be positive.

This is the view of Phil McKenzie, the co-founder of British film production company Goldfinch, who tells Decrypt that AI will serve mostly to “amplify” human creativity, rather than replace it.

“On a macro level, entertainment will be impacted less than many many sectors,” he says. “On a micro level, AI offers enormous benefits, particularly for independent creators, despite the fear being amplified by legacy gatekeepers.”

Last month, Goldfinch signed a deal with Luxembourg-based Digital Genesis Fund to launch a $20 million investment vehicle, which will support Web3 and AI-focused entertainment studios.

And for McKenzie, this kind of venture will ultimately be a boost to the creative industries, providing tools that will “lower barriers for new talent” and reduce production costs.

“At Goldfinch, we’re building tools—including a new AI and Web3 app with Jordan Bayne and The Squad—to empower producers and creators to turn stories into modular, AI-enhanced, on-chain IP that’s ready for scalable licensing and cross-platform expansion,” he says.

McKenzie also expects that even supposedly at-risk roles will evolve to incorporate AI, while also suggesting that AI will bring about “a redistribution of value and opportunity”, rather than a decline.

And despite sounding several alarms in its report, the BFI also acknowledges that positive steps are already being taken to ensure that AI works for the industry as a whole.

“Our report found evidence that there is increasing activity in licensing deals, and a flow of activity and interest in creating the frameworks that would smooth the path for even more licensing in the creative industries,” says Rishi Coupland, the BFI’s Director of Research and Innovation, speaking to Decrypt.

Proliferation of licensing deals

As recent examples of progress, Coupland cites the forthcoming Copyright Licensing Agency generative AI licensing solution, research and development work by AI music firm DAACI on a copyright solution, and the work of licensing startup Human Native.

In fact, Coupland points out that the BFI’s report cites data from the Centre for Regulation of the Creative Economy, which has recorded 79 licensing deals over the past two year period.

There is therefore precedent for how creative sectors can adapt to the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, although Coupland also agrees with recent remarks from UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who suggested at a conference in London last week that legislation may be needed.

He explains, “She has also said that once the Data Bill is passed by Parliament, she and Peter Kyle will begin a series of roundtables with representatives from across the creative industries to develop legislation, with both houses of Parliament given time to consider it before they proceed.”

How our voters handled the ballot

Conducting a global vote on the world’s best players is no easy feat, and we gave some guidelines with the ballots as to how possibly best to proceed. Voters were encouraged to take the following things into consideration: Who are the best players right now, weighted toward their 2024-25 seasons?
