Thailand Exempts Crypto Capital Gains to Boost Global Hub Ambitions

by admin June 18, 2025

In brief

  • Thailand will waive capital gains taxes on crypto sales through licensed platforms from 2025 to 2029.
  • The move is part of a broader push to position the country as a global digital asset hub.
  • Experts say Thailand’s crypto holdings could surge, but platform access restrictions may limit foreign participation.

Thailand has eliminated capital gains taxes on crypto sales for the next five years, marking the Southeast Asian nation’s most aggressive push yet to position itself as a premier global financial hub for digital assets.

The Thai Cabinet approved the sweeping tax exemption on Tuesday, waiving personal income taxes on crypto capital gains from sales conducted through licensed digital asset service providers from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2029.

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat announced the landmark decision in a statement Tuesday, calling it the government’s ambition to establish Thailand as “one of the world’s financial hubs.”

The move represents a strategic effort by Thai authorities to attract international crypto businesses and investors away from established hubs like Dubai and Singapore.

First to the punch

Thailand is maintaining itself as “one of the first countries in the world to have laws governing digital assets and digital asset tax laws,” according to Amornvivat’s statement.

The government projects the initiative will generate substantial economic benefits, with the Finance Ministry estimating that crypto assets will help expand the Thai economy and increase tax revenue “by no less than 1,000 million baht” ($30.7 million) over the medium term.

Industry experts suggest the impact could be far more significant, with Thailand’s crypto holders already controlling the second-highest concentration of digital assets in Southeast Asia.

“Thailand crypto HODLers are holding $180 billion, and clear regulations and tax reforms will help people to hold more crypto assets,” Jagdish Pandya, founder of Blockon Ventures and organizer of Thai Blockchain Week 2019, told Decrypt.

Pandya projects that “with the rise of Bitcoin three to 10 times after every halving and exponential industry growth, Thailand digital asset holdings can touch $1 trillion by 2030.”

He noted that the Thai government was the “first to move in setting up comprehensive crypto regulations” and that “Chiang Mai, Phuket are emerging web3 hubs” that will attract foreigners.

The latest tax exemption applies specifically to transactions conducted through licensed platforms regulated by Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission, including digital asset exchanges, brokers, and dealers operating under the Digital Asset Business Act.

The requirement ensures compliance with Anti-Money Laundering policies recommended by the Financial Action Task Force.

However, the policy comes with caveats that could limit its accessibility.

Archer Wolfe, cofounder of MohrWolfe and a former resident of Thailand, told Decrypt that Thailand’s largest crypto exchange, Bitkub, “will be facilitating most of these sales,” adding that “the issue at play is who is actually allowed to use the platform.”

He warned that eligibility often changes “overnight based on the government’s regulatory oversight,” alternating between allowing international users and restricting access to Thai nationals only.

The announcement coincides with Thailand’s broader crypto-friendly initiatives, including plans announced in May to allow tourists to spend crypto as part of major regulatory reforms.

Under that system, merchants would receive Thai baht as usual, often without knowing crypto was used in the transaction, with the backend automatically converting crypto to fiat currency in real-time.

Obsidian Entertainment has big ambitions for Grounded 2’s small world

by admin June 16, 2025

Obsidian Entertainment has been an incredibly versatile game developer over the years, even venturing outside its RPG comfort zone with the original Grounded. As a survival adventure game where you’re shrunken down and explore the hidden, vast world of a backyard, it became a well-loved hit, and it evolved even further throughout its early access period. But now, the developers have big plans for Grounded 2, which has new features and a larger scope that was too big for the original to contain.

Shortly after the reveal during the recent Xbox Games Showcase alongside Summer Game Fest 2025, I got to play the opening of the sequel, which sees the familiar crew of teenage scavengers, now a little older and wiser, shrunken down once again to survive a new small world hidden in the town’s park. Even as a new iteration of a familiar premise, which is essentially the survival gameplay of Rust by way of the whimsical Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Grounded 2 is already showing some promise as the bigger and better sequel.

Grounded 2, which will also launch in early access, already feels like a bigger game, even from the confines of the tutorial zone. For starters, there’s a larger focus on building up the experience of the four teenage scavengers and how they fit into the larger story. It’s not quite Yellowjackets when it comes to teen drama, but the crew exploring the small world of the park have colorful language and quips at their disposal. There’s a generally stronger sense of personality in Grounded 2, which is bolstered by some more character-driven writing and opportunities to take in the lore of the company responsible for the experiments in town.

The experience of playing Grounded 2, much like the original and other survival games, is all about gathering resources from the land and acquiring knowledge to stay alive. Along with collecting materials to build weapons, armor and structures, you’ll also have to keep your characters fed and hydrated. You’ll also need to defend yourself against the various critters roaming about, such as the ants and the spiders. Also returning is the arachnophobia accessibility option to make them appear less disturbing for players. Thankfully, you can now use a dodge to avoid attacks – a first for the series – and combat is generally more responsive and fair.

Grounded 2 feels like a more well-rounded and refined take on the original, which is a solid game in its own right. One great addition that I got to play with was the new ant mount, or buggy, as the devs call it. You’ll be able to ride on top of a friendly ant that can attack enemies, move faster throughout the world, and even collect material far more quickly than the human scavengers.

Obsidian Entertainment

Shortly after my hands-on experience, I sat in on a roundtable discussion with game director Chris Parker and producer Miles Winzeler from Obsidian Entertainment, who explained how early access feedback from players helped bring the game to its current state. In order to fully implement their vision for Grounded, though, they would need a new game.

“Almost everything in Grounded 2 comes from feedback from the community that we had gathered from the first game,” Parker said. “We had to look at what was important to work on with the sequel. People always want more stuff to do. They wanted to have the buggies, which was a huge one and our number one most requested feature from out the gate on Grounded 1. We then had to work on new creatures, armor and weapons, among other things. How can we further develop our progression systems? So those were all the things that we took on from the beginning for Grounded 2.”

Grounded 2 felt like a more fully realized game, which leveraged years of work on the original. Along with a more developed story campaign focusing on helping the kids survive the portion of Brookhollow Park they have to explore – which is more than three times the size of the original’s map – The game will also launch with creative mode, which was a popular feature that let players focus on exploring and building up structures at their leisure.

Obsidian Entertainment

“We’re always trying to challenge scale and how we can create a sense of awe and mystery by having something that’s supposed to be normal but is now this gigantic thing,” Parker said. “That’s always the fun when making this game.”

I really took to the added scope of Grounded 2. Not just as a shrunken person trapped on the grounds of a park but also for the new features and ideas at work for the sequel. With the game coming out in July for early access, Grounded 2 has already got me invested in making a return visit to this small world with big ambitions.

Grounded 2 will release in early access on July 29 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available for Game Pass subscribers.

Santander’s Crypto Ambitions: Spain’s Top Bank To Roll Out Stablecoin

by admin May 30, 2025

Banco Santander SA, one of the largest banks in Europe and Spain, is reportedly considering introducing its own stablecoin. The bank also plans to give its digital banking arm, Openbank, the ability to offer crypto services to retail clients.

According to a Bloomberg report from May 29, the Spanish bank’s online unit has applied for licenses to operate these services under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation.

Euro And Dollar Stablecoins For Retail Clients

While Santander has not officially commented on the report, Bloomberg sources reportedly indicate that the bank is evaluating the launch of euro- and dollar-denominated stablecoins. This could involve creating its own stablecoin or facilitating access to existing ones.

Santander’s Openbank, which serves customers across multiple European countries, is poised to launch these crypto services as early as this year, contingent on obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals, according to Bloomberg.

This move comes as Santander’s Spanish competitor, BBVA SA, announced in March its intention to offer cryptocurrency services following approval from Spain’s regulatory authority, the CNMV.

BBVA has already been providing similar services in Switzerland and Turkey, allowing customers to buy, sell, and manage transactions in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) through their app.

How BBVA Aims To Guide Customers In Crypto Assets

Gonzalo Rodríguez, BBVA’s head of retail banking in Spain, emphasized the bank’s commitment to making cryptocurrency investment accessible, stating, “Our goal is to guide them as they explore this new segment of digital assets, backed by the solvency and security assurances provided by a bank like BBVA.”

The MiCA regulation aims to harmonize the currently fragmented regulatory landscape across the European Union’s (EU) 27 member states.

By establishing a comprehensive framework, the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets is shaping how major digital market participants operate within one of the world’s largest economic regions.

The regulation allows banks, investment firms, and other financial institutions to engage in cryptocurrency activities, provided they have the necessary authorization under the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) II.

Such a move comes in the wake of growing legislative support in the US led by President Donald Trump, who has increasingly changed its previous vision about digital assets and Bitcoin with major announcements, including the establishment of a Strategic Crypto Reserve.

As such, Bitcoin reached a new record high of $111,800 last week, with analysts and investors vowing to see even greater gains in the coming months.

Consequently, the total crypto market capitalization reached a new high of $3.5 trillion last week, now standing at $3.3 trillion as investors flock to cash out their gains.
