X4: Foundations’ massive diplomacy update adds an actual embassy room to your HQ, where you can entreat with aliens from across the galaxy and establish yourself as space Machiavelli

by admin September 14, 2025

While not as flashy as Star Citizen or as popular as No Man’s Sky, X4: Foundations is one of the most comprehensive space sims you can play today. Representing a return to form after the failed experiment that was X: Rebirth, X4 continues the series tradition of offering a preposterously detailed simulation of space—featuring trading, combat, space exploration, and dynamic faction politics—while also letting players build and expand their own interstellar empire.

X4 can be a hugely rewarding experience, provided you can handle its vertiginous learning curve and millions of menus. The space sim has quietly trundled along with a small but dedicated community for years now. But its latest update caught my eye. Patch 8.00 introduces a detailed diplomacy system to the sequel, letting you liaise with the universe’s many alien factions, mess with inter-faction relationships to your advantage, and conduct daring espionage operations, essentially adding a slice of Crusader Kings to your adventures through the void.

Described as a “deeply integrated new gameplay feature” by developer Egosoft, X4’s diplomacy system is built around three key components. At its heart is the embassy room, where ambassadors from across the galaxy gather to entreat with you around an actual round table.

The embassy room can be unlocked and constructed at your player headquarters. Once unlocked, you can invite other factions to send representatives to your embassy, though you can only do this if you have a friendly (or better) relationship with that faction. I like this physical representation of something that could easily be confined to a menu, though it seems these representatives function mainly as a quick access to the relevant faction menu, so it isn’t quite as simple as it appears.

As well as interacting with factions directly, you can also manipulate them behind their backs through espionage. The diplomacy update introduces agents, recruitable NPCs who can serve both as negotiators and spies. Agents can be given their own ship and dispatched on a variety of missions, including spying on enemy ships, stealing valuable blueprints from other factions, and initiating “diplomatic interference”.

X4: Foundations 🚀 Diplomacy Update (8.00) + Envoy Pack Release Trailer – YouTube

Watch On

What is diplomatic interference? Well, it lets you trigger diplomatic incidents and then influence them to your advantage, altering relationships between factions and improving your own position as a result. Depending on the current standing between the relevant factions, you can wade into trade disputes, arbitrate peace talks, manage territorial claims, and deal with cyber attacks and accusations of espionage. The results of your interference may result in changes to resource claims, redrawn borders, altered alliances, and even wars.

Egosoft describes diplomatic interference as “the most game changing element” of the update. “Changes in faction relations can have an extraordinary impact on the galaxy, as alliances, trade partners and supply chains shift.” The big question, of course, is how well all this works with the rest of X4’s voluminous network of systems. Recent Steam reviews are slightly less positive than the overall rating (76% versus 78%). But they don’t say much about the diplomacy system one way or the other. At least nobody is complaining, I suppose.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

The diplomacy update is available now. The free update coincides with the release of X4’s Envoy Pack. This paid DLC introduces a “stealth-ready” frigate perfect for spies and sneaky negotiators, as well as a new mission chain, a new game-start that throws you right into that storyline, and an extra space sector. The Envoy Pack is available for $8 (£7).

Neil deGrasse Tyson admits 3I/ATLAS could be aliens, but it’s not his first guess

by admin August 29, 2025

Neil deGrasse Tyson has addressed growing speculation that mysterious interstellar objects such as 3I/ATLAS might be evidence of alien technology, and while he admits the possibility, he insists it’s the last option on his list.

3I/ATLAS, first detected earlier this year, is only the third known object to pass through our solar system from another star system. Unlike comets or asteroids bound by the Sun’s gravity, it entered and will eventually leave entirely. Its unusual brightness and rotation rate don’t perfectly match current models, adding to the intrigue and fueling theories that it could be an alien probe.

The interstellar object has raised eyebrows due to a few uncanny traits, most notably its brightness. The object appears to emit its own light, rather than merely reflecting sunlight, suggesting its nucleus may be actively glowing. If true, this glow could come from a nuclear-powered source or engine, possibly even of alien origin.

Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has even floated a thought experiment about 3I/ATLAS, drawing from the “dark forest hypothesis,” which imagines alien civilizations deliberately hiding from one another in a dangerous galaxy.

Loeb noted that 3I/ATLAS’s unusual traits could mirror the kind of signs a genuine starship might give off if it were ever passing through our solar system. If an alien craft were mimicking 3I/ATLAS’s path, it could theoretically use only small propulsion adjustments to send projectiles or other payloads toward neighboring planets like Venus or Mars.

NASA3I/ATLAS has baffled scientists and sparked numerous alien theories.

Neil deGrasse Tyson shoots down alien starship 3I/ATLAS theories

In his StarTalk YouTube channel, the astrophysicist compared today’s alien theories to the old “God of the gaps” mindset, where people filled in what they didn’t understand with divine explanations. “We live in a time where God of the gaps has been supplanted by Alien of the gaps,” Tyson said, noting how quickly some leap to extraterrestrials.

Tyson pointed to recent discoveries of three confirmed interstellar visitors, including 2017’s famous ‘Oumuamua. These objects didn’t behave exactly as expected, showing odd rotations, brightness, or unexplained deviations in trajectory.

“Whatever anomalous behavior these objects exhibit, I’m delighted they’re finally in the catalog and we’ll figure it out one day,” he said.

Still, Tyson cautioned against jumping to conclusions. “‘Is it aliens? That could be,’” he said. “Like I said, it’s not my first thought. I promise you it will be my last thought, but it’s in the list.”

Instead, he argued the scientific approach requires more data, more peer review, and less speculation. To Tyson, unusual interstellar rocks are more likely to represent a new class of natural object that we just don’t have info about than proof of extraterrestrials. “It’s easier for me to think this is a new kind of object that requires way more study than we’ve given it thus far than to say aliens did it,” he explained.

That doesn’t mean he’s closing the door completely. “Maybe,” Tyson admitted when pondering if aliens could be coming to visit Earth. But based on history, he sees that outcome as “unlikely” and more like something out of a science fiction movie.

For now, the astrophysicist is urging curiosity over certainty: keep looking up, but don’t let “alien of the gaps” thinking replace scientific inquiry. In any case, an old expression still rings true here: The truth is out there.

Out very soon, Helldivers 2’s giant Terminid caving update is a feast of nods to Aliens and Dune, plus dragons

by admin August 27, 2025

Helldivers 2’s homaging of Starship Troopers and/or parodying of real-life fascist interventionalism continues with Into the Unjust, a sizeable game update that will take you out to the Terminid Hive Worlds for a spot of cave combat. According to multiple geographers interviewed by RPS, caves are located underground. That’s going to cause problems if, for example, your entire military strategy depends on being able to call in air support whenever you choose. The same geographers also allege that caves are dark. That’s going to cause problems if you like to see the things you’re shooting at.

Helldivers 2 Into the Unjust launches 2nd September, and why read the rest of this evidently stupid news piece when you can just watch this seven minute “deep dive” (comedy whoopee cushion sound effect)?

Watch on YouTube

Did you skip the video? Bless you for your loyalty to the written word. Your reward is a hasty summary of Into The Unjust from me, plus more bad jokes. Basically, Hive Worlds are big jaggedy deserts made out of congealed snot and custard. The Terminids here appear vastly more annoying than the ones you’ll find on, lol, Super Earth, because they have the ability to burrow.

That extends to the Chargers, who can actually charge while burrowing. I would need to consult with the geographers again, but I’m not sure that should be allowed. At the very least, they should have to use a new word for it. I would recommend “churrowing” but that makes it sound like you’re being assaulted by delicious fried dough. “Barging” is already a word, unfortunately, and “burraging” sounds like you tripped and bit your tongue while ordering an artillery strike. Can we please just move onto the next paragraph already.

There are two new types of mission to undertake on Hive Worlds. Firstly, journeys underground in search of a horrible giant lung that’s coughing up a bunch of poison fog. These missions readily evoke Aliens, and naturally put a strong emphasis on teamwork than many surface-level shoot-outs: in darker spots, one player may need to shoulder flashlight duties, sacrificing participation in the carnage for the good of the squad. I’m sure this won’t lead to any broken friendships.

The second type of mission sees you escorting a mobile oil drill with a big cannon on it. It’s Dune and also, a pisstake of US oil politics. It seems like the new Dragonroach enemies will be a particular hindrance during these missions: they can fly and have acidic breath. The key to prevailing over Dragonroach appears to be forcing them to land by blasting their wings, and if that isn’t grounds for modding Fus Ro Dah functionality into Helldivers 2, my name isn’t Hey You, You’re Finally Awake.

The video includes details of some forthcoming Helldivers 2 warbonds, aka DLC packs. There’s a crossover with Halo 3: ODST, which has been in the wind for a while, and lets you wreak war with such UNSC armaments as the Battle Rifle and Magnum (but will it capture the interplay between the former’s shield-stripping and the latter’s finishing shots?). There’s also a Dust Devil warbond tailored to the new Hive World maps, which includes an assault rifle with incendiary rounds, a new napalm rocket, a gas harpoon, and a missile silo helpfully housed in a hellpod.

Some recent Helldiverse happenings: they’ve put a stop to an exploit that let you warp out of the extraction shuttle. They’re handing out free capes like they’re going out of style – a foolish observation of mine, for what is style if not cape. They’re also not making Helldivers 3 anytime soon, unless Helldivers 2 updates itself so much that it becomes Helldivers 3 by default.
