Bitcoin price eyes $100k crash as Convano adopts Metaplanet-style buying strategy

by admin August 30, 2025

Bitcoin continued its downward trend after a major options expiry on Friday. It also plunged as Convano, a sleepy Japanese company, announced a BTC buying strategy.

Summary

  • Bitcoin price could crash to $100,000 as the recent momentum wanes.
  • Convano, a Japanese company, aims to buy coins worth $3 billion.
  • Bitcoin strategy companies have lost momentum this year.

Convano to accumulate $3 billion worth of Bitcoin

The Bitcoin (BTC) price, at last check on Saturday, is down more than 5.4% over the previous seven days, and down 13% from its all-time high this year. The rising uncertainty about the Federal Reserve, rising crypto liquidations, and a multi-billion-dollar options expiry triggered a crash.

Still, despite the current crash, a small Japanese nail salon operator known as Convano has launched a new Bitcoin buying strategy. It is now rising about $3 billion, which it will use to acquire 21,000 Bitcoin. Its planned capital raise is much higher than its market capitalization of $386 million.

Convano hopes to become a successful story like Strategy and Metaplanet. Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has seen its market capitalization jump from approximately $1 billion in 2020 to $90 billion, primarily driven by its Bitcoin buying strategy.

Similarly, Metaplanet has moved from being a hotel owner to a $2 billion company, helped by its 18,991 Bitcoin purchases.

The risk for Convano is that Bitcoin treasury companies are not doing well. Strategy stock has plunged by over 25% from its 2024 high, while Metaplanet has crashed by over 50% from the year-to-date high.

Other top companies that have adopted this strategy, such as GameStop, MicroCloud Hologram, and Trump Media, have also slumped. According to BitcoinTreasuries, there are now over 100 companies holding over 989,926 coins.

The daily timeframe chart shows that the BTC price has crashed after peaking at a record high of $124,200 earlier this month. BTC has moved below the 100-day and 50-day Exponential Moving Averages, while the Average Directional Index rose to 19, indicating that the downtrend is strengthening.

It has also formed a double-top pattern and moved below the neckline at $111,834. This pattern has a height of about 9.3%. Measuring the same distance from the neckline means that it may crash to $100,000 in the coming days.

Tether halts USDT freeze on legacy chains, adopts ‘unsupported’ status

Tether halts USDT freeze on legacy chains, adopts ‘unsupported’ status

by admin August 30, 2025

Tether will no longer freeze USDT on Omni, BCH SLP, Kusama, EOS, Algorand, and other legacy chains. The assets, however, become “unsupported,” entering a financial limbo without official issuance or redemptions.

Summary

  • Tether halts its planned USDT freeze on legacy blockchains, including Omni, BCH SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand.
  • Tokens on these networks become “unsupported,” with transfers allowed but no official issuance or redemption.
  • The update follows community feedback and aligns with Tether’s broader strategic focus on active, high-demand chains.

On August 29, USDT issuer Tether announced a significant revision to its transition plan for legacy blockchains. Originally, the company had planned to freeze USDT tokens and halt redemptions on networks including Omni Layer, Bitcoin Cash SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand starting September 1, 2025.

Following extensive feedback from user communities, Tether opted to abandon the freeze while still discontinuing official issuance and redemption. This leaves tokens on these networks in an “unsupported” state, where transfers between wallets remain possible but the assets no longer carry the same backing or operational support as USDT on active chains.

“While users will still be able to transfer the tokens between wallets, Tether will discontinue direct issuance and redemption on these blockchains. This means the tokens will no longer be officially supported as other Tether tokens,” the USDT issuer said in the statement.

A strategic pivot, not a retreat

Tether’s decision to walk back the freeze suggests that pushback from developers and users on networks like EOS and Algorand presented a reputational risk that outweighed the technical simplicity of a clean break.

The revised approach, which Tether states “aligns with its broader strategy,” is a pragmatic compromise. It allows the firm to shed the operational burden of supporting low-traffic chains while avoiding the public relations nightmare of effectively destroying user assets.

However, while the issuer pares down its support on one front, it is aggressively expanding on another. Just one day prior to this announcement, Tether revealed plans to launch a native USDT on Bitcoin via the RGB protocol.

The move can be seen as Tether’s strategic bet on Bitcoin’s foundational security. Unlike wrapped assets on bridges, which introduce counterparty risk, RGB leverages Bitcoin’s own scripting and client-side validation to make USDT an intrinsic part of the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Tether already distributes the stablecoin across Ethereum and Tron, each with over $80 billion in circulation, and on smaller platforms like Solana, Avalanche, Celo, and Cosmos.

CFTC Adopts Nasdaq Financial Market Monitoring Tool to combat Market Manipulation

CFTC Adopts Nasdaq Financial Market Monitoring Tool to combat Market Manipulation

by admin August 27, 2025

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), a US financial regulator, is integrating a financial surveillance tool developed by stock exchange company Nasdaq in a bid to overhaul its 1990s infrastructure.

Nasdaq’s software is focused on detecting market abuse, including insider trading activity and market manipulation in equities and crypto markets, Tony Sio, head of regulatory strategy and innovation at Nasdaq, told Cointelegraph. He said:

“Tailored algorithms detect suspicious patterns unique to digital asset markets. It offers real-time analysis of order book data across crypto trading venues and cross-market analytics that can correlate activities between traditional and digital asset markets.”

The data fed into the monitoring system will be “sourced by the CFTC through their regulatory powers,” Sio said.

Financial surveillance continues to be a hot-button issue in crypto, with privacy advocates arguing surveillance creates conditions for a digital “prison,” and others arguing that anti-money laundering techniques are necessary for institutional adoption of crypto.

DeFi sector increasingly concerned with surveillance

The US Treasury Department is exploring the possibility of requiring digital identification checks embedded within decentralized finance (DeFi) smart contracts to combat illicit financial flows.

Combatting illicit finance was one of the directives given in the White House’s crypto report from July, which also included tax and market structure proposals for digital assets in the US.

The White House report recommended that the Treasury Department and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) develop additional know-your-customer (KYC) parameters for digital assets.

The report also recommended revising the existing NIST digital identity guidelines and overhauling identity credential tools.

Critics of these proposals say that adding such tools to DeFi protocols betrays the core ethos of permissionless, decentralized architecture.

“If you turn a neutral, permissionless infrastructure into one where access is gated by government-approved identity credentials, it fundamentally changes what DeFi is meant to be,” Mamadou Kwidjim Toure, CEO of investment platform Ubuntu Tribe, told Cointelegraph.
