OAKMONT, Pa. — France’s Victor Perez carded only the second recorded ace in a U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club on the par-3 sixth hole in Friday’s second round.

From 192 yards, Perez hit a 7-iron from the tee. His ball bounced three times before tracking about 3 feet into the cup. He raised his arms, then chest-bumped his caddie, James Erkenbeck, before high-fiving his playing partners, Jacob Bridgeman and Adam Schenk.

Scott Simpson made an ace on the 16th hole in the first round of the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 1983.

“Obviously, a hole-in-one takes a little bit of luck,” Perez said after the round. “Honestly, I was trying to hit something maybe 15-20 feet past the hole, maybe it spun a little more and bounced in. I was a little fortunate, which I’ll definitely take.”

Perez told reporters that he believes it’s the ninth ace in his career — and the third this month. He made two at his home course in the Bahamas, but he was playing alone and no one witnessed them.

“They didn’t believe me at home because I was playing by myself,” Perez said. “Now, they’ll know.”

Perez, who played college golf at New Mexico, needed the ace to get back to 1 over. He started the day with that score but made a triple bogey on the par-5 12th, his third hole of the day. He hit his drive into a fairway bunker, needed four shots to get to the green and three-putted for an 8.

Perez rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 16 and 17, before making a bogey on No. 18 to make the turn at 2-over 37. After carding another bogey on the par-4 third, he sank a 5-footer for birdie on the fifth.

He finished 1 over after 36 holes.

Perez, ranked 99th in the world, has never made the cut in a U.S. Open. He missed the weekend in five consecutive starts in the major coming into this week.

Ace Attorney meets Slay the Spire in this ‘courtroom deckbuilder’ about fighting for the rights of a murdered god

All Will Rise Kickstarter Trailer | Wholesome Direct 2025 – YouTube

Watch On

“The river is a god, and they killed her” is a hell of a way to start off a trailer, but that’s how things get rolling in the new video for All Will Rise, which despite sounding like some sort of supernatural thriller is in fact a “narrative courtroom deck-builder” about ordinary people holding the wealthy and powerful to account for their actions.

A trailer revealed during today’s Wholesome Direct showcase gave us a look at what All Will Rise is all about. You are a lawyer in Muziris, “a vibrant city under pressure by powerful corporate and political interests,” and you’ve chosen a task that is not at all simple: Using unlockable cards earned by following leads and making choices, you must pursue a corrupt billionaire in court and hold him responsible for the murder of a river.

“Conversations are courtroom-style strategic card battles,” the Steam page says. “Charm and persuade, or intimidate and manipulate. Play cards to influence people’s emotional energies—Hearts, Minds and Guts. Engage their emotions, or exploit their vulnerabilities to make your points. Choose your strategy carefully, potential allies could easily turn into determined enemies.”

It won’t be a clean fight in the safe, sterile confines of the courtroom, and tough choices will have to be made, with potentially devastating long-term consequences. “Mix with ecoterrorists and godmen, capitalist overlords and construction workers, conspiracy theorists and hacker seeresses. Boost your reputation with the city’s quarreling factions—keep the balance, or let tensions explode.”

Your team will have to be carefully managed as well: Be aware of their strengths and weaknesses as you assign them to missions, respect their opinions, and don’t push them too hard, lest they burn out.

I’m not generally big on deckbuilders, but the narrative elements of All Will Rise make it immediately attractive: This is clearly a game with something to say, which is a little bit unusual in the realm of videogames. I dig the visual style too, and any game that lets me play this card is worth at least a second look:

All Will Rise is currently up for wishlisting on Steam, and it’s also headed to Kickstarter. The crowdfunding campaign hasn’t begun yet, but you can sign up to be notified when it’s live.

Asus ROG Falchion Ace HFX Review: Hall Effect With New Tricks

by admin June 5, 2025

Every gaming keyboard manufacturer seems to be jumping on the Hall effect bandwagon, and why wouldn’t they? The keyboard technology has been proven in both esports arenas and home office setups worldwide and offers countless advantages over standard mechanical keyboards, with no real performance compromises.

Hall effect keyboards have also arrived as countless other technologies enter the keyboard space: Everything from gasket-mounting to touchpads is now in mainstream keyboards. That also means I regularly see new products, mechanical and Hall effect, with features I’ve never even considered before. Case in point, the Asus ROG Falchion Ace HFX, a small keyboard with a large name and a lot of unusual features.

This $200 wired-only keyboard has Hall effect switches, an 8,000-Hz polling rate, multidevice connectivity with two USB-C ports, and a programmable touchpad on the back edge. Not to mention countless on-keyboard controls and a flipable lever to enable or disable the rapid trigger feature found on most Hall effect keyboards. While it does have some strange design decisions, it has a lot of really clever ones too.

Unique Switches

The Falchion has one of the deepest typing sounds compared to other Hall effect keyboards. This is likely a combination of the keyboard’s unique HFX magnetic switches, one of the few I’ve tested that aren’t made by Gateron, and the sound dampening inside. It consists of multiple layers of foam, Poron, and silicone, and a sheet of small rubber domes.

The switches feel incredibly smooth, even when pressed slowly, with a consistent feel throughout the entire keypress. They use a polycarbonate top housing, a POM stem, and a POM bottom housing, contributing to the deeper typing sound and ensuring smoothness across the entire keystroke. Unlike most Hall effect switches, the HFX doesn’t have a hole in the center, instead, it moves the magnet to the front, where the metal contact leaf would typically be on a mechanical switch. This makes the Falchion incompatible with standard Hall effect switches, but likely improves the sound profile as well: Open-bottom switches tend to have a more hollow typing sound, which can be heard on competitors.

The springs are weighted to 55 grams of total force, which is 5 grams lighter than the Gateron Nebula dual-rail switches used by Keychron, and 10 grams lighter than the standard Cherry MX Red. There aren’t any other switches available for this keyboard, but because Hall effect switches are contactless, the existing switches can be removed without any desoldering or extensive disassembly.

I didn’t find myself wanting to change the switches, though—they have a poppy and deep sound that’s incredibly crisp, and they feel responsive and smooth, especially with rapid trigger enabled. My largest issue with the typing experience was the keycaps. They have a rough texture that, while grippy, felt noticeably coarse and unpleasant when typing. It comes down to preference, but I found them less enjoyable than smooth or lightly textured keycaps.

Pirates GM Ben Cherington says trading ace Paul Skenes is ‘not at all part of the conversation’

by admin May 23, 2025

PITTSBURGH — The Pirates are reeling, and just about everything is on the table for a last-place team that has already fired its manager and packed a half-decade’s worth of public relations missteps into two months.

Well, except for one thing: trading ace Paul Skenes.

Asked Thursday if flipping the reigning National League Rookie of the Year is a consideration for a club woefully lacking in impactful position-player prospects, general manager Ben Cherington gave an atypically brief response.

“No, it’s not part of the conversation at all,” Cherington said flatly.

Pittsburgh is already 11½ games out of a playoff position, thanks in large part to an offense that ranks last or next-to-last in nearly every major category, from runs, slugging percentage and OPS (all 30th) to home runs and batting average (both 29th).

The Pirates at least showed a small flicker of life at the plate in an 8-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers a few hours after Cherington spoke, scoring five runs for the first time in 27 games. Their 26-game streak of four runs or fewer tied a major league record set by four other teams, most recently the then-California Angels in 1969.

Yet it was telling that Pittsburgh also left 10 runners on base, typical of a season in which the Pirates have consistently been unable to take advantage of the few opportunities they create.

It’s not exactly what the team had in mind during spring training, when everyone from Cherington to Skenes to manager Derek Shelton — who was jettisoned two weeks ago and replaced by Don Kelly — talked about the need for Pittsburgh to take another step forward after consecutive 76-86 seasons.

Instead, the Pirates have been stuck in reverse from Opening Day, even when Skenes starts. Pittsburgh is 3-5 in his eight starts, the latest loss a 1-0 setback in Philadelphia on Sunday in which Skenes limited the Phillies to three hits while throwing the first complete game of his career.

Skenes, who turns 23 next week, has been all-in on the Pirates since being called up a year ago. He is also under team control for the rest of the decade and won’t become arbitration-eligible until after 2026, making his current deal one of the biggest bargains in the majors.

Though Pittsburgh has locked down players such as two-time All-Star outfielder Bryan Reynolds and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes to long-term deals, those contracts are a pittance by MLB standards compared to what Skenes might command one day should his career continue on its current trajectory.

The Pirates are perennially one of the most frugal teams in the majors. Their payroll to start the season was just under $88 million. Only the Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Athletics and Miami Marlins spent less.

Even so, Pittsburgh has received little return on its investment. Though the bullpen has been a bit of a mess, the starting rotation has been solid. Skenes (2.44), Mitch Keller (3.88), Andrew Heaney (2.91) and Bailey Falter (3.50) all have ERAs under 4.00, yet they also have a combined record of 10-17.

The issue has been a punchless lineup that is largely nondescript beyond Reynolds, franchise icon Andrew McCutchen and center fielder Oneil Cruz.

Yet it’s telling that while Pittsburgh has one of the deeper pools of pitching prospects — a list that includes hard-throwing 22-year-old Bubba Chandler and Mike Burrows, who took the loss in his first major league start Thursday after going 2-1 with a 2.71 ERA for Triple-A Indianapolis — the cupboard of homegrown position players who are on the cusp of the majors remains pretty bare five-plus years into Cherington’s tenure.

Catcher Henry Davis, the top pick in the 2021 draft, remains a work in progress nearly two full years after his major league debut. Second baseman Nick Gonzales, a first-rounder in 2020, is recovering from an ankle injury and has yet to establish himself as an everyday player. Former first-round picks Termarr Johnson (2022) and Konnor Griffin (2024) are still years away.

So far, the only call-ups from Triple-A have been mostly injury-related, not performance-related.

“We want guys from Triple-A to pound the door down,” Cherington said. “That would be good. I still think that can happen this year. We want more of it over time. … Everybody knows we’ve got to score more runs. That’s not going to happen just by saying it and hoping for it. You’ve got to do the work to do it.”

Cherington said he remains optimistic that the major league team will start to turn the corner over the final 110 or so games, and he is certain Skenes will be a part of it no matter which way it goes.

“We’ve just got to get better,” Cherington said. “Let’s play better baseball, and that’s going to lead to winning more games. Then, let’s wake up and see where that takes us when we get to July.”

Ace Ventura Limited Edition 4K Steelbook Preorders Restocked At Amazon

by admin May 22, 2025

If you weren’t a regular moviegoer in 1994, then it must have been a confusing year, thanks to everyone around you peppering their speech with “Alriiiiiiighty then” catchphrases. Jim Carrey’s breakout year at the box office started with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and at long last, that comedy classic is releasing on 4K Blu-ray on July 29. The Limited Edition Steelbook version is available to preorder for $33 at Walmart or $36 at Amazon.

Amazon has sold out of preorders once already (at full price), but if it remains in stock this time, we’d expect the retailer to match Walmart’s price prior to launch. That said, it’s also possible that the price-matching will go the other way, and Walmart increases its price to $36.

$33 at Walmart | $36 at Amazon (was $45) | Releases July 29

The 4K Blu-ray edition of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was created using the original 35mm camera negative. It supports Dolby Vision with HDR10 and DTS-HD 5.1 Surround Sound. There aren’t any new bonus features, but the audio commentary with director Tom Shadyac is included on both the 4K Blu-ray disc and remastered 1080p Blu-ray disc. The latter should offer better visual and audio quality than the original Blu-ray release since it is based on the 4K transfer. The Blu-ray disc also has the theatrical trailer.

The original 1997 laserdisc release of Pet Detective had three episodes of the Ace Ventura animated series, but unfortunately those episodes have never been included with subsequent Blu-ray releases.

The steelbook case features original artwork of Ventura’s signature hairstyle and a pigeon worth $25,000 resting on Jim Carrey’s head.

$40 | Releases July 29

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is also getting a standard edition 4K Blu-ray release on the same day. Though it’s officially called a “Collector’s Edition,” make no mistake that the collectible version is the aforementioned Steelbook Edition. This edition includes a standard plastic case and cardboard sleeve with one of the promotional images for the theatrical release.

At the time of writing on May 21, this edition is actually more expensive than the Limited Edition Steelbook at both retailers.

Ace Ventura was one of the biggest comedy films of the mid-1990s, thanks mostly to Jim Carrey’s wild performance as the titular pet detective. While the movie does have some content that is very dated when viewed through a modern lens, it’s still a laugh riot thanks to the constant flow of one-liners and a solid mystery at its core. A sequel would arrive a few years later and it saw Ventura travel to Africa–much to the relief of several dozen Buddhist monks–but this one hasn’t received a 4K Blu-ray release yet. You can find it on Blu-ray, or as part of an Ace Ventura Blu-ray double feature.

To complete the set, you can also pick up Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Jr. on DVD. We’re not saying you should avoid it, but this prequel can induce a level of cringe so bad that it generates its own gravity. It’s a soulless cash-grab at best, and if you watch it, you might need to buy a new Blu-ray player because you’ll likely fling yours through the nearest window after watching just a few minutes of this movie.

In related Jim Carrey news, you can pick up Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on 4K Blu-ray right now. The threequel saw Carrey star once again as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his character’s grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.

There are two different steelbook case designs to choose from: Sonic and an Amazon-exclusive Shadow variant. You can complete the Carrey trilogy with Sonic the Hedgehog Bonus Stage Steelbook Edition for $28.30 (was $30.46) and the Sonic 2 Steelbook Edition for $18.45 (was $29).
