Swiss Bank LUKB to Accept BTC And ETH as Loan Collateral

by admin September 25, 2025

In its recent policy update, Swiss Bank Luzerner Kantonalbank (LUKB) announced that it will allow clients to pledge Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) as collateral for loans. The bank first added trading and custody services for cryptocurrencies last May.

According to a report by Finews, LUKB is taking the first step toward using cryptocurrencies in the lending business with this move. It will help the company grow and ensure that the whole value chain of digital assets is always integrated.

“We are responding to market developments and client needs,” said Serge Kaulitz, Head of Blockchain & Digital Assets at LUKB. “Cryptocurrencies have become a recognized and highly liquid asset class. Similar to equities or funds, they can serve as collateral for a Lombard loan, since they can be liquidated at any time.”

The digital business will also help in expanding LUKB’s portfolio by giving it more options as interest rates go down. This income stream that doesn’t come from interest is becoming more important. Kaulitz stresses that the digital business is also meant to help the bank improve its digital services across the entire institution.

Moving towards crypto-based banking

Switzerland is becoming a pioneer in digital asset-based banking. Early this year, the state-owned bank, PostFinance, announced that it had included an Ethereum staking option in its banking offerings.

Additionally, last week, Swiss banks made a big move that could change how money moves between banks. In a trial led by the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA), top banks like UBS, PostFinance, and Sygnum Bank completed the first-ever bank payment on a public blockchain with full legal approval.

Ohio Moves to Accept Crypto Payments for State Fees

by admin September 25, 2025

In brief

  • The Ohio State Board of Deposit unanimously approved a vendor on Wednesday to process cryptocurrency payments for state fees and services.
  • Secretary of State Frank LaRose said he’s “excited and ready to be the first to provide it to our customers.”
  • The decision follows a broader Ohio crypto legislation push, including proposed Bitcoin reserve and blockchain protection bills.

The Ohio State Board of Deposit unanimously approved a vendor to process crypto payments, including Bitcoin, for state fees and services in its latest bid to integrate crypto into public finance.

“With hundreds of thousands of transactions going through my office each year, I want to commend the board for taking bold action to position us at the forefront of the emerging digital economy,” Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose tweeted on Wednesday.

Wednesday’s approval caps months of work that began in April, when LaRose and Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague pushed the board to authorize crypto payments.

The proposal passed unanimously in May, but needed final vendor approval, the last piece that fell into place on Wednesday.

“There’s a reason why we now rank among the top five states in the nation to do business,” LaRose said in a statement. “It’s because we’re not afraid to embrace the tools, trends, and technologies that incentivize job creators to come here.”

The Secretary of State said his office processes hundreds of thousands of transactions annually and has heard “growing demand for a cryptocurrency payment option.”

“I’m excited and ready to be the first to provide it to our customers,” he added.

“It’s happening. Government payments in Ohio today. Everything onchain tomorrow. Thank you, ser,” Coinbase CLO, Paul Grewal, tweeted in response to the announcement

The crypto payments are part of Ohio’s broader push into digital assets.

In June, the House advanced the Ohio Blockchain Basics Act, which bans local governments from restricting digital asset use and exempts crypto transactions under $200 from capital gains taxes.

Dennis Porter, CEO of the Satoshi Action Fund, previously told Decrypt that the legislation is “a clear signal” that lawmakers are “encouraging innovation in the Buckeye State.”

LaRose also backs House Bill 18, which would create an Ohio Strategic Crypto Reserve funded by portions of state investment earnings.

In a May testimony, he cited President Donald Trump’s Working Group on Digital Asset Markets, established in January to make America the “crypto capital of the planet.”

So far, 47 states have introduced Strategic Bitcoin Reserve (SBR) bills, with about 26 states carrying active proposals still under consideration, according to the Bitcoin Laws tracker.

Arizona, Texas, and New Hampshire are among the few to advance measures furthest, while most remain stuck in committee.

Meanwhile, Michigan’s stalled Bitcoin reserve legislation gained momentum this week, with House Bill 4087 advancing to the Government Operations Committee after seven months of inaction.

Toyota, Yamaha, and BYD Accept Tether in Bolivia Amid Dollar Crisis

by admin September 22, 2025

Three major international vehicle manufacturers, Toyota, Yamaha, and BYD, have started accepting Tether (USDT) in Bolivia. The move marks a turning point in the country’s shift toward crypto as its US dollar reserves collapse.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed on Sunday that the companies now allow customers to buy vehicles using USDT. Crypto security firm BitGo also verified on X the first Toyota purchase with Tether in Bolivia on Saturday. Photos shared by Ardoino on X show dealerships displaying banners calling USDT an “easy, fast, and safe” way to pay.

Bolivia’s Growing Reliance on Crypto

Bolivia was once among the last Latin American countries to resist digital assets. But in June 2024, it lifted its long-running crypto ban, allowing banks to process Bitcoin and stablecoin transactions. Since then, adoption has spread quickly.

In March, the state-owned oil and gas company YPFB gained approval to accept crypto for fuel imports, a response to the country’s worsening currency shortage. Shops at airports have even started pricing goods in USDT, while import businesses rely on stablecoins to pay foreign suppliers.

According to Trading Economics data, Bolivia’s foreign exchange reserves have declined by 98% over the past ten years, falling from $12.7 billion in 2014 to just $171 million in August 2025. While locals still use the boliviano in daily life, many are turning to stablecoins or dollars to protect their purchasing power.

Politics and the Road Ahead

Bolivia heads into a run-off election on October 19. Candidate Rodrigo Paz Pereira has proposed blockchain for transparency, while his rival Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga has kept his crypto stance vague. The winner will inherit the challenge of stabilizing an economy under severe strain.

This trend demonstrates that crypto is not only an investment instrument in Bolivia, but it has turned into a lifeline of trade, business, and even car buyers. The narrative is an indication of how economic crises can hasten the use of digital currency across the globe.

Toyota, Yamaha Accept USDT in Bolivia as US Dollar Reserves Shrink

by admin September 22, 2025

Three major international vehicle manufacturers have started accepting a Tether in Bolivia to navigate its collapsing US dollar reserves, marking a major step in the Latin American country’s crypto adoption.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino shared that Toyota, Yamaha, and BYD are taking Tether (USDT) for payment on Sunday, while crypto security firm BitGo confirmed the first Toyota was purchased in Bolivia with USDT on Saturday.

Pictures shared by Ardoino show a dealership displaying signs that advertise USDT as an “easy, fast, and safe” payment option for car purchases.

Bolivia was one of Latin America’s last crypto n bholdouts until June 2024, when it lifted its long-standing crypto ban and allowed banks to process Bitcoin (BTC) and stablecoin transactions.

One of the first big adoption stories came in March when Bolivian state-owned oil and gas firm Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos received government approval to start accepting crypto for fuel imports as a solution to the country’s deepening US dollar shortages.

Bolivia’s foreign exchange reserves have fallen a staggering 98% from $12.7 billion in July 2014 to $171 million this August, Trading Economics data shows. The Bolivian boliviano remains the most widely used currency in Bolivia; however, fears over it losing purchasing power have pushed many locals to prefer more stable alternatives like the US dollar or, in some cases, crypto.

Bolivia’s top bank even called crypto a “viable and reliable alternative” to fiat currencies while signing a memorandum with El Salvador to accelerate crypto adoption in late July.

Meanwhile, Bolivian shops at airports have been pricing basic items in USDT as a way to navigate the currency crisis.

Bolivian businesses are relying on stablecoins for international trade

Bolivian businesses that import products have also been using USDT to work around US dollar shortages, TowerBank’s head of digital assets, Gabriel Campa, told Bitfinex last Tuesday.

They buy stablecoins locally or via offshore bank accounts, convert them to US dollars, and pay overseas suppliers. Some of these products are then listed in USDT, enabling a stablecoin circular economy to keep trade and operations running, he said.

Bolivia’s future will be decided in October

Bolivia will hold a run-off vote between Rodrigo Paz Pereira’s Christian Democratic Party and Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga’s Freedom and Democracy alliance on Oct. 19.

To tackle corruption, Paz Pereira has proposed implementing blockchain technology for greater transparency, while Quiroga’s stance on crypto is less clear.

The winning party will lead Bolivia after nearly two decades under the Movement for Socialism, which has borne much of the blame for the country’s current economic crisis.
