How the AI revolution is triggering a hardware arms race and pushing up prices

Look at the numbers involved in AI cloud investment and data center buildout, and the stats are astonishing. The Magnificent 7 tech companies – the biggest tech giants in the world – have collectively invested more than $100 billion in data centers and other infrastructure in the last three months alone. The majority of that comes from four of the seven: Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet.

That spending is having an outsized effect on the economy. Jens Nordvig, the founder of Exante Data, believes that total spending on AI could account for 2% of U.S. GDP this year, based on projections and planned projects.

The same is true in China, where provinces and private companies alike are throwing more and more cash at AI buildouts. The scale of that spending is such that Chinese president Xi Jinping has stepped in, warning officials to be more cautious with their cash for fear of overspending. Not everyone is listening. Gartner, a consultancy firm, believes the world will spend nearly half a trillion dollars on data centers this year, up 42% from last year. McKinsey, another consultancy, believes that more than $5 trillion will be invested by 2030, so great is the demand.

Good for investors, but is it good for capex?

The kinds of eye-watering sums involved are good news for tech investors, shareholders in those Magnificent 7 firms, and plenty of others. The people leading those companies are making it clear they think it’s necessary. “It’s essential infrastructure,” said Jensen Huang, in Nvidia’s Q1 earnings call in May. “We’re clearly in the beginning of the buildout of this infrastructure.” But the massive interest in data centers is having other knock-on effects beyond making big tech companies even bigger. It’s reshaping how we think about the sectors and components that make those data centers work.

“The central problem today in AI is compute power, and the energy required is getting out of hand,” says Subramanian Iyer, distinguished professor at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UCLA, in an interview with Tom’s Hardware Premium. Lots has been written about the energy impact of these large data centers, with some companies even starting to consider small modular reactor technology that would power them using nuclear. “That tells you how serious the power problem is,” Iyer says.

Google, for example, raised its 2025 capital expenditure budget to $85 billion from $75 billion because of investments in servers and data center construction, with further acceleration expected in 2026. Google’s monthly token processing also doubled from 480 trillion in May to over 980 trillion. (A little over a year earlier, the number of tokens Google processed was just 1% of that.) All of those tokens need processing. And that processing happens on hardware. Jefferies estimates that Google’s 980 trillion token compute is close to 200 million H100s operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

It all adds up to significant expenditure. Moore’s law isn’t completely dead, argues Iyer. But it’s changing. “Transistors are still scaling, but they’re no longer getting cheaper,” he says. “In fact, they’re getting more expensive.”

What data centers are used for is changing. Unlike their traditional predecessors, they now rely heavily on advanced GPUs, specialized networking, and high-powered cooling, meaning their bill of materials (BOM) has bloated. Estimates put the cost of a fully-equipped AI data center at around $10 million, with power and cooling systems and servers and IT equipment accounting for roughly a third each, with other key categories including network (15%) and storage (10%).

All of those are being squeezed by inflation and surging hardware requirements. But that’s only for smaller enterprise-focused setups: the hyperscale facilities of the type that Donald Trump and other countries around the world are looking at run into the billions of dollars per campus.

The underlying cost of components is also steadily rising. Average material costs increased by 3% and labor by 4% for key data center hardware over the past year, with concrete and copper cable among the biggest risers, according to Turner & Townsend. The smaller but still essential elements like power delivery, printed circuit boards, and advanced packaging are also rising in price thanks to chronic bottlenecks, especially for the high-end AI chips that require stacking and new thermal approaches.

Semiconductors used to drop reliably with each new process node, but that’s no longer the case as manufacturing them becomes more complex, and increased demand globally squeezes supply. TSMC is likely to raise the price of advanced nodes by over 15% in 2025, according to reports, passing on costs to buyers. It all means that every new data center costs more money than it used to.

When they were launched in 2020, Nvidia’s then-top-tier DGX A100 servers cost $199,000. Prior reporting from Tom’s Hardware suggests analysts believe the GB200 server racks will cost $3 million. There’s an argument that the price hike is down to rising manufacturing costs, with those fabs turning into gigaprojects, like TSMC’s $65 billion Arizona complex. In part, the cost of these large-scale efforts is so great because the hardware behind them can be comparatively wasteful. “If you spend a megawatt of power for a data center,” says Iyer, “the actual work you’re getting is only about a third of that. The rest of it is pretty much all overhead.”

Those giant fab complexes cost as much money to equip as they do to build. Buyers are absorbing the cost of EUV machines to make the 2nm and 3nm chips populating data centers, which might have dozens of them – and that’s before considering the less advanced, but not significantly less expensive, tools for wafer etching, deposition, and inspection. A single high-end lithography EUV tool from ASML can reportedly cost $400 million alone.

Big tech’s intense AI buildout has forced even the world’s leading chip manufacturers, like TSMC, to invest at an unprecedented scale. Their Arizona cluster, which encompasses three advanced fabs, shows at what scale companies are operating. Elsewhere, Nvidia expects that up to $1 trillion will be spent globally upgrading data centers for AI workloads by 2028, further underlining the scale of the transformation.

Bigger tasks, bigger bills

One reason for the bigger bill is that the purpose – and the amount of work those data centers are being asked to do – has changed and increased. But the cost is also because the hardware requirements for those cloud servers and data centers have altered. Big tech capex keeps climbing because AI workloads now demand the bleeding-edge node – a shift in recent years that has been enacted by the rise of generative AI.

Silicon destined for servers once was able to lag the chips put into smartphones by a process generation or two, but is now “is par à pursue [on par with] with the bleeding edge,” said CJ Muse, an analyst specializing in semiconductors for Cantor Fitzgerland in an interview with Tom’s Hardware Premium. That forces data center operators onto the most expensive wafers to cram in as many transistors, and as much compute per watt, as possible. All that comes with a hefty price tag. “A bleeding-edge 2nm fab at TSMC, for every 1,000 wafer starts at about $425 million, and so that adds up pretty quickly,” says Muse.

The race to be at the bleeding edge creates a domino effect. State-of-the-art processors are pointless if starved of data, making high-bandwidth memory (HBM) vital. But now memory is facing its own pressures on supply and cost. “From now on, the HBM segment should face a test of how HBM suppliers can manage supply and protect prices as their technology gap narrows and real competition begins,” said Jongwook Lee, a team leader at Samsung Securities, in a research report.

Lee and his colleagues foresee a future where the HBM market could split into ‘new’ product segments like HBM4, the higher-bandwidth, more luxe standard of memory, which would continue to enjoy a premium, and ‘old’ product segments, which would require discounts to remain competitive.

HBM manufacturing is vastly more complicated and supply-constrained than standard DRAM. With only Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron as the three major suppliers, HBM can be especially vulnerable to supply disruptions or geopolitical shocks. Demand regularly exceeds supply, and lead times for HBM often top half a year, especially with advanced packaging capacity being booked years in advance for longstanding customers like Nvidia and AMD. It all means intense technical and economic headwinds in HBM, and the advanced packaging ecosystems they depend on, weigh heavily on the speed, cost, and security of the world’s AI data center buildout.

Even global competition for wafer fabrication equipment (WFE) is heating up. Chinese imports grew 14% year-over-year in June 2025, according to Jefferies, breaking a previous downward trend. June was the first month of positive growth in 2025, led by a surge in demand for specific machinery, including etching and deposition tools, which saw growth of 65% and 28% respectively.

Analysts at Jefferies believe that the unexpected growth was from China’s DRAM sector, and particularly CXMT, a major producer that has, to date, dodged being on the US sanctions list of entities not allowed to import chip tech into China. The US-China tech rivalry has led to stringent export controls and sanction lists that continue to constrain Chinese chipmakers from accessing critical semiconductor manufacturing technology to alleviate some of the supply pressures. That’s unlikely to change as Donald Trump continues to pursue an America first strategy for this – but could backfire if Trump pushes his hand too far. China dominates the processing of rare earth elements like neodymium, critical for high-performance components used in data center hardware. Sourcing rare earths, essential for AI chips and data center hardware, could become trickier if any one party chooses to weaponize access to them as part of trade negotiations. The political and regulatory headwinds are increasing cost pressures and investment risks, shaping the competitive landscape in unpredictable ways.

Nvidia’s stranglehold, and how companies are fighting back

The problem every tech company faces is that they’re overly reliant on Nvidia at present. As a result, big cloud providers are weighing up whether to develop their own custom ASICs. Broadcom alone expects AI-specific custom silicon and networking sales to reach 42% of its revenue by 2026, according to Muse.

Major hyperscalers like Google, Amazon, and Meta are all actively rolling out custom ASIC chips, creating substantial opportunities for both established vendors and new entrants. Broadcom is booming: analysts say the firm’s custom ASIC and networking revenue for AI is expected to be around $18 billion by 2026, much of it driven by custom chips for hyperscale inference and high-bandwidth AI networking. The demand isn’t just coming from chips for inference. Networking ASICs, interconnect switches, and edge/IoT devices are all seeing surging demand.

Yet Muse points out that building successful custom chips is hard. “Google had three different teams building the TPU, and one was successful, the other two were not,” he says. The answer to that is for companies to try and develop their own ASIC strategy while also recognizing they need to go into the market and buy more GPUs.

That in turn is pushing up prices, in large part because companies that once kept themselves to themselves are not competing with one another. “I think the interesting change statement is that Meta, Amazon, Google and Microsoft all had fairly defined swimming lanes,” says Muse.

“Obviously there’s competition in offering cloud services, but their business models didn’t really overlap, and they all were all doing extraordinarily well,” he explains. That’s since changed. “Now they’re all competing head-to-head, and so there are going to be clear winners and losers.” That head-to-head competition is driving what Muse calls “this mad race and massive investments”.

The outcome will not only determine the next leader in tech, but could also redraw the global map of technological power for a generation.

U.S. Government Now ‘Controls’ 10% of Intel, Trump Says

President Donald Trump announced Friday that the U.S. government would be taking a 10% stake in Intel, the struggling U.S.-based chip manufacturer. But the president’s choice of words will definitely raise more than a few eyebrows, especially since the Trump regime has previously said the federal government will have no corporate governance role at the tech company.

“It is my Great Honor to report that the United States of America now fully owns and controls 10% of INTEL, a Great American Company that has an even more incredible future,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The government taking a 10% ownership stake in Intel shouldn’t be surprising, as rumors about the deal leaked last week. But what might surprise people is Trump’s use of the word “control.” Nobody seems to know what that means yet.

“I negotiated this Deal with Lip-Bu Tan, the Highly Respected Chief Executive Officer of the Company. The United States paid nothing for these Shares, and the Shares are now valued at approximately $11 Billion Dollars,” Trump continued.

“This is a great Deal for America and, also, a great Deal for INTEL. Building leading edge Semiconductors and Chips, which is what INTEL does, is fundamental to the future of our Nation,” according to Trump. The president ended his post with the now-customary, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” and “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Lutnick’s denials on Tuesday

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was asked about the plans for a government stake in Intel during an interview with CNBC on Tuesday. Lutnick was specifically quizzed whether the government would get a governance role at Intel, something the Commerce Secretary insisted would not happen.

“Do you get governance here?” CNBC host David Faber asked.

“No, no, no, no, no…” Lutnick said over and over to the question, suggesting the entire idea was absurd. “Come on, stop that stuff. It’s not governance, right, we’re just what was a grant under Biden into equity for the Trump administration, for the American people.”

Faber pointed out that any other entity owning 10% would expect to have a say in how that company was run. “Why wouldn’t you want some…” Faber started to say before Lutnick drowned him out by repeatedly saying “non-voting, non-voting.”

Faber noted that the U.S. government got a so-called “golden share” when Japan-based Nippon Steel tried to buy U.S. Steel, meaning that Trump can potentially veto corporate decisions he doesn’t like. It’s unclear at this point what kind of influence Trump can have at Intel with this new 10% stake, which likely involves converting $10.86 billion in grants for Intel from the Biden-era CHIPS ACT into equity, according to reporting Tuesday the New York Times.

Who actually negotiated the deal?

Lutnick was the first to break the news on social media in a tweet shortly before Trump, though the Commerce Secretary’s announcement obviously carries less weight in an increasingly authoritarian country like the U.S. It’s not real until Dear Leader says it’s real.

“BIG NEWS: The United States of America now owns 10% of Intel, one of our great American technology companies. This historic agreement strengthens U.S. leadership in semiconductors, which will both grow our economy and help secure America’s technological edge,” Lutnick wrote.

Lutnick’s tweet was sent at 4:10 p.m. ET and included a photo of him with Intel CEO Lip Bu-Tan. That presumably irked Trump, who sent his own post on Truth Social almost an hour later, at 5:04 p.m. ET, and included the claim “I negotiated this Deal with Lip-Bu Tan” in the second sentence.

Trump reportedly met with Tan last week after the president called for the Intel CEO’s resignation over alleged links to China. Trump insisted there was “no other solution to this problem” but changed his tune after the meeting.

What do the Dems say?

Folks on the left have been divided on whether Trump’s plan for Intel is a good one for America. Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont who caucuses with the Democrats, said earlier this week that he supports the plan for the U.S. government to take an equity stake.

“If microchip companies make a profit from the generous grants they receive from the federal government, the taxpayers of America have a right to a reasonable return on that investment,” Sanders told Reuters.

But Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat from Virginia, wouldn’t commit so emphatically one way or another. In an email to Gizmodo, Warner said taking an equity stake “may or may not be the right approach,” while emphasizing that cutting-edge chips should not “flow to China without restraint” if that undercuts investments made in the U.S.

“We need a strategy that protects American innovation, strengthens our workforce, and keeps the technologies of the future firmly in American hands,” Warner said. “Additionally, given the administration’s recent approach to other high-profile technology transactions, Congress must apply thorough scrutiny for potential conflicts of interest or undue interference in private-sector decisions unrelated to national security.”

Intel is a drop in the ocean

Warner is absolutely right that Congress needs to look into any conflicts of interest or “undue interference” on private companies. But given the current trajectory of the U.S.—where we’ve got armed troops on the streets of D.C. and harassment campaigns against the president’s opponents—it seems unlikely that Congress will be deploying any checks or balances soon.

Abxylute will sell an absurd 3D handheld from Intel and Tencent Games for “under $1,700”

As the handheld PC boom has taken off, companies have tried to push the boundaries of the Steam Deck form factor Valve helped popularize. Lenovo tried detachable controllers. Acer is trying an 11-inch screen. And Abxylute is apparently combining them both (and then some) into the Abxylute 3D One, which The Verge reports features an 11-inch, glasses-free 3D display and detachable controllers, all for “under $1,700.”

The Abxylute 3D One is based on a hardware prototype co-developed by Intel and Tencent that the companies demoed at CES 2025. The prototype, dubbed the “Sunday Dragon 3D One,” featured a display that used eye-tracking to achieve its 3D effect. The version Abxylute is selling seems to be offering more or less the same features, with an Intel Lunar Lake chip, 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM, an 120Hz display and a built-in kickstand.

The Abxylute 3D One’s controllers can detach like Joy-Cons, which leaves it looking like a chunky Surface Pro.

“Abxylute claims the product’s specifically optimized to deliver 3D for 50 of the top Steam games,” The Verge writes, though it can also be used for more than gaming if you’re desperate. The Abxylute 3D One will include software for converting 2D photos and video to 3D, and a detachable keyboard accessory complete with a trackpad.

No part of what Abxylute is offering here seems particularly practical, but if you like 3D and are into the company’s maximalist approach, you could be getting a deal. Acer’s 11-inch handheld, the Acer Nitro Blaze 11, starts at $1,100. A 3D laptop like the ASUS ProArt Studiobook 16 starts at $2,000. The Abxylute 3D One could approximate the features of both for a fairly reasonable price in the middle.

That might not make up for the fact that it seems too heavy to hold for more than 30 minutes at a time, but you can put that to the test yourself when the Abxylute 3D One goes on sale in “late September or early October.”

Insta360 Go Ultra: two-minute review

Get drawn in by the fun magnetic system and tiny size, and be genuinely impressed by the quality of the 4K footage. That’s what happened when I tested the Insta360 Go Ultra, a product that takes the advancements made with Insta360’s Ace Pro 2 and GO 3S and turns them into another (really) compact, pocket-sized camera system for adventurous creators.

I’ve been into action cameras since the first GoPros came out (terrifyingly, almost 20 years ago). But until recently, I’ve always found their bulky housings less than ideal in adventure-type scenarios (running up a mountain peak, or learning to surf, for example). The whole point of the Go Ultra is to unlock more creative opportunities without sacrificing portability.

Insta360 might be best known for its innovative 360-degree cameras, but it’s a brand that’s becoming synonymous with challenging the norms of action cams, too. The Go Ultra is a frankly tiny, pocketable camera (at 1.9 oz / 53g), about the same size as an Apple Watch. It’s a natural successor to the Go 3S (released in 2024), but not a replacement. At the time of writing, Insta360 told me that both cameras will remain on sale.

Like its predecessor, the magic of the Go Ultra is its modular design that combines a standalone camera and an Action Pod, giving you unique ways to shoot, charge and play. On the surface, the camera simply looks like a square version of the Go Ultra 3S, and powerful magnets on its base mount to the Action Pod (where the screen and buttons are) or numerous accessories and attachments. I even mounted the camera to our car, but that’s a story for another day.

However, inside its dark gray exterior are some notable improvements. The sensor is 221% bigger for better low-light capture, and a new 5nm AI chip delivers benefits to video quality using algorithms. The Go Ultra can shoot 4K60fps video, where the Go 3S was limited to 4K 30fps. And I found the PureVideo mode – that uses said AI algorithms to cut down on noise in low light – delivered good results at sundown, where my previous action cams struggled. The maximum wide 156-degree POV is great for group shots and selfies, vlogs and immersive action alike, and the view can be tailored to avoid a warped perspective.

This is a content companion for people with an active lifestyle rather than professional athletes. I found myself shooting more with the camera overall, simply because in one snap, I could have hands-free recording.

Like the Go 3S, the standalone camera is more rugged than the Action Pod. You can use it in freezing conditions and depths of 33 feet (10 meters) underwater, while the pod is only splashproof, which is a shame. Other rugged points for the camera include a replacement lens cap (helpful if you scratch it during activities) and a push-up cover to keep the memory card slot inside dry.

I love the simplicity of the Go Ultra’s design. Like the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, the flip-up touchscreen on the action pod is an alternative to the front-and-back solution on GoPro, and I found it more intuitive for vlogging. Handling is a three-button operation, with intuitive swipes for key menus on the touchscreen, and the magnetic mounting system is always satisfying and feels secure.

The Go Ultra’s battery life was a sore point for me, and not as impressive as all-in-one rivals. I got around an hour of 1080p video recording from the standalone camera, but more than double when combined with the Action Pod. USB-C charging takes you from 0 – 80% in around 12 minutes, though, making up for the fact that the battery doesn’t last as long as Insta360 suggests based on their lab tests.

There’s no built-in storage for content like the Go 3S has, but microSD cards up to 2TB are compatible, and it’s so quick and easy to get footage off the camera using the Insta360 app on a smartphone. I don’t think this is a problem (just an extra cost to bear in mind).

Image quality is better than the Go 3S, with photos capped at 50MP instead of 9MP. And you get HDR video mode, too, with the option to apply ‘Dolby Vision’ to shot footage to give it more contrast and color. The usual video modes like Timelapse and Slow Motion work as expected, while new Toddler Titan mode adds fresh, immersive POVs. There are several new features aimed at families, including AI Family Moments to pull content of loved ones into a virtual album.

The camera’s audio quality was surprisingly crisp in most scenarios, and voice-specific modes picked up my rambling very clearly, while a wind-reduction mode helped while running in a breeze. Although I haven’t tested them, Go Ultra is also compatible with several external microphones designed for high-quality sound, including Insta360’s Mic Air, and third-party Bluetooth mics like the DJI Mic Mini and AirPods Pro 2.

The Insta360 Go Ultra is hugely versatile, and I filmed in so many places, with so many perspectives, that wouldn’t have been safe or possible with my iPhone alone. If you’re a family wanting more creative holiday snaps, a creator feeling stuck with what you can shoot with a smartphone, or just someone with an active lifestyle, the Go Ultra feels like the ultimate lightweight and fun solution.

It comes with two different bundle options. The Standard Combo includes the camera, quick-release cord, magnet pendant, magnetic clip and a USB-C charging cable. It costs $449.99 / £369 / AU$759.

The Creator Combo bags you all of the above, plus a Mini 2-in-1 Tripod 2.0, Quick Release Mount and Pivot Stand. It costs $499.99 / £409 / AU$839. Although a lens cap is provided, you’ll need to buy a separate pouch or case, as neither bundle includes one – and this feels a bit mean.

The pricing puts the Go Ultra at just a fraction more than the Іnѕtа360 X3 in the US and UK (when it’s not on offer), which is now three years old, but that does offer 5.7K 360-degree capture over the Go Ultra’s 4K. It’s roughly the same price as the Insta360 Go 3S, but you get double the frame rate with 60fps video capabilities.

I think the Go Ultra is fairly priced. The GoPro Hero 13 Black is a strong competitor at around $359.99/£305, particularly if you want a traditional action camera and don’t mind a bulkier design. There’s no built-in storage, so factor in the cost of buying a microSD card before you can start filming.

Insta360 Go Ultra: Design

The Insta360 Go Ultra resembles a square version of its former self, the Go 3S (its only real rival). Where its predecessor was pill-shaped and about the size of a thumb, the Go Ultra is square and more than half as deep as it is wide, sitting neatly between your forefinger and thumb for quick handheld shots. That’s only half of the product, though. Without the Action Pod, the Go Ultra is one of the lightest action cameras you can buy at 1.87oz / 53g (14g heavier than the Go 3S). Using the Action Pod turns the Go Ultra into more of a traditional GoPro-style action camera.

The main difference is that there’s one flip-up LCD touchscreen, rather than a screen at the front and back. As an owner of the GoPro Hero 12 Black, this flip-up screen was a revelation to me, and I found it so helpful when filming walking shots and talking to the camera, or to see how a shot was framed when shooting with the standalone camera remotely.

No doubt it contributes to the Action Pod’s lack of waterproofing, though. The IPX8-rated camera can be fully submerged underwater, but the Pod is only resistant to splashes, limiting where you can take it. On this, I was always careful to dry the camera before popping it back into the Pod.

As far as durability goes, the camera is also freeze-proof down to -4F (-20C), so it’s ripe for snowsports. And a screw-on lens protector added peace of mind for me against lens scratches, given that a replacement is around $20 / £20. I’ve known so many action cameras in the past to fog up when filming underwater or changing temperatures quickly, but the lens guard has an anti-fog coating that avoided this particular pain point well.

I found the operation of the camera simple, which is a great thing because it lets you focus on the fun part of creating. The Action Pod has just three buttons: red up top for recording, a power button and a Q button to quickly switch modes on the right. There’s a raised button to release the standalone camera from its magnetic mount on the left (above a USB-C charging point), and I never found myself pressing this accidentally.

You really have to tug the standalone camera to release it from the Pod’s magnets, which avoids unwanted drops. Underneath the Action Pod, there are two holes to fit the Go Ultra’s specific Quick Release Mount (sold separately, but very solid), for a secure fit to accessories like the brand’s Pet Harness. Attaching the camera to a pet harness was decidedly old school, with an action mount and screw system. But this kept it firmly in place, even after a lot of doggo rolling.

Navigating the camera’s menus is easy, too. When you first turn on the Go Ultra, you get a walkthrough of what gestures bring up which settings. It took me a few hours to remember which did which (old dogs), but it soon became second nature. A right swipe brings up playback for footage, and a right swipe lets you dial in more settings and switch between Auto and Manual Mode.

The touchscreen is bright, colorful and responsive, which makes changing settings – even with wet or cold fingers – straightforward. You can buy the Insta360 Go Ultra in either Midnight Black (model tested here) or Arctic White, but either way, the construction is from a rigid, matte plastic that seems scratch-resistant, and like it could take a few knocks and drops. It’s sensible action camera fodder.

Insta360 Go Ultra: Performance and features

The Go Ultra is designed to work alongside the free Insta360 app, which pairs to the camera via its own WiFi network for remote operation. From here, you can also download, preview and edit videos on your smartphone. Other than installing some new firmware (released just before the camera), I was paired and ready to shoot from the app in under 10 minutes.

The standalone camera and Action Pod pair via Bluetooth when they’re apart. I found the connection seamless, with no lag when changing settings or in the real-time view on the screen. Range can be an issue, though, both from the camera to the phone and from the camera to the pod. More than about five meters away, or underwater, the connection would dip out, and the camera would stop recording. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it might limit more complex setups, especially if you’re shooting somewhere wet.

The Go Ultra has a 6-axis gyroscope to measure the camera’s movement and rotation, and through an algorithm, makes the video more stable and gives you a more even horizon. Image stabilization isn’t bad, but I found fast-moving objects needed a bit of extra help. When trail running, I got my best results by activating the Jitter Blur Reduction mode, plus Tilt Fix, which corrects uneven mounting by up to 10 degrees. It took me a while to discover both of these, and my first clips with the camera clipped to a hat (including this swimming clip below) were fairly wonky. Once activated, though, the results evened out nicely, and even clips of my dog lolloping at full speed looked stable.

The camera has a built-in microphone, and four modes for picking up sound – Stereo, Voice Enhancement, strong and weak wind reduction. I found the audio quality really impressive while walking in good conditions. My voice was picked up clearly when talking to the camera, and even in a busy city, the camera was able to isolate the sounds nearby rather than heavy traffic noises. If you use the camera in water, the audio will drop out, and the camera will need to dry enough before the clarity returns.

Like most action camera mics, there’s an issue with wind noise disrupting the clarity (especially when running in breezy conditions), but the wind reduction setting did noticeably reduce this. It’s a big advantage for serious creators to be able to boost the sound quality with an external mic like the Insta360 Mic Air, DJI Mic 2 and AirPods 4. Although without testing, it’s hard to comment on the performance this would bring specifically.

I found all the camera’s shooting modes and presets easy to get good footage with, partly because the camera does such a good job of explaining what each one does, without the advice feeling intrusive on the screen. It was also easy to control the camera with voice commands, “turn the camera off”, “mark that” and hand gestures like making a peace sign to trigger a photo. I found that the standalone camera gets very hot after filming. Even after low-resolution clips, I felt it burning a hole in my shorts pocket, but this didn’t cause any interruption in recording, so I don’t think it’s a major issue.

Once my clips were captured, I was ready to start editing my videos. Much like GoPro and DJI’s accompanying editing apps, Insta360’s version also features AI-assisted editing tools to pick out clip highlights. There are tonnes of presets to choose from – with funky names like Vibe City and Tunes and Travel – which do a fair job of creating quick, shareable clips by adding transitions and music.

There are helpful default export settings for platforms like WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, although you can customize export parameters. I enjoy editing manually, but the Insta360 app is so intuitive that I can see even total beginners getting creative right away. Some of these end up being a bit cheesy, but you can tailor the music and effects to suit your tastes. I’ve included an example of an AI-edited video below, with clips of my dog wearing the pet harness on walkies.

The Go Ultra’s biggest downfall – and something we struggled with while testing the GO 3S – is battery life. The standalone camera has a 500mAh capacity, and the action pod 1,450mAh capacity – noticeably smaller than the 2,400mAh capacity on the Insta360 X5, but an improvement on the GO 3S’ 310mAh and its 38-minute life. Also, unlike action cams with replaceable batteries, when you run out of juice, that means content creating is on hold until you can find a way to recharge.

Insta360 says you can get 70 minutes of footage out of the standalone camera. Adding the Action Pod gives you 200 minutes. But that’s with Endurance Mode on, the LCD and Wi-Fi off, and for 1080 24fps video – conditions I don’t think most normal shooters are going to replicate. When I tried shooting a video in 1080 30fps from full power, without all the caveats on the specs sheet, I got around 150 minutes with the pod and 45 minutes without. I don’t think that’s dreadful for a camera this small, and it’s worth noting that a 10-minute charge took me from about 0-75% so I was ready to shoot again. But it’s something to consider if you’re away from power for long periods, or looking to shoot continuous cycles, runs and hikes for longer.

Insta360 Go Ultra: Image quality

Insta360 has given the Go Ultra a bigger 1/1.28-inch sensor than the Go 3S, the idea being that this is capable of capturing more detail in low light. The Go Ultra also supports video capture up to 4K 60fps and 1080 240fps for slow-motion, plus new HDR that can be applied to clips and stills. Unsurprisingly (because this is a super user-friendly camera), there’s no option to shoot in a flat profile for more color grading scope during post-production. But that’s no problem, as I think most users will stick to editing in the Insta360 app anyway. Beyond the specs, what do the results look like in real life?

Going into testing the Go Ultra, I think my expectations were too low for a camera of this size. I found video quality to be brilliant in all 10 modes, but footage was sharpest and most vibrant in abundant sunshine. In the camera’s Standard color preset (there are 8 in total, including Vibrant and Urban) videos were still colorful and had decent detail in the shadow and highlight areas, although the contrast ratio wasn’t good enough to expose a very bright sky like a sunset, and a dark foreground, in one shot.

It’s easy to switch the Go Ultra to Manual exposure mode, where you can take control of the shutter speed, ISO (100–6400) and white balance yourself. I found this most helpful for stationary shots, but wouldn’t recommend it to beginners. In short – and unlike my mirrorelss camera – Auto mode saw me through all shooting scenarios, and I rarely felt the urge to take over. The joy of this camera is in its simple opration.

The camera adapts quickly to rapid changes in light, such as coming out of a shady forest into an open field. And I found that useful when I was running in the countryside, moving quickly, where i didn’t want the picture to be shrouded in darkness for a few seconds. Being summer, I did a lot of shooting in direct and dappled sun, and found that lens flare was handled well, too.

Big talking points of the Go Ultra’s video capabilities are the new additions of Active HDR and PureVideo. Like SuperNight on the DJI Osmo 360, it’s designed to enhance the quality and sensitivity of low-light shooting. It’s somewhat limited to automatic settings and 4K 30fps, but you can shift the exposure up and down in increments. Walking around a city at night, I was able to pick up plenty of detail in the buildings, street lights and the sky, although I think there’s some aggressive denoising AI going on inside the camera, as the footage did look a bit muddy at times.

Photos from the camera have a seemingly high megapixel count (the maximum resolution is 50MP or 37MP with a 16:9 aspect ratio), which is a big bump up from the Go 3S’ 12MP in 4:3 (9MP in 16:9). In practice, I’d say that’s more than adequate for slotting into videos, or uploading to social platforms, but I wouldn’t want to make big prints from them. At the camera’s widest field of view, you get a 14.27mm equivalent in 35mm terms – expansive enough to get groups in the frame, or to shoot yourself while walking. If you’re not a fan of the warped action camera look, a Linear POV does a great job at giving you a more natural wide-angle, good for vloggers.

Overall, I’m impressed by the quality of Go Ultra’s footage. It’s in line with an action cam that’s this portable, and the addition of HDR to video as well as photos (with Dolby Vision for an extra boost) delivers polished videos you can safely deliver to friends, family and your social channels.

If I were a professional creator, I wouldn’t rely on this camera to cover all my video needs. But it excels at what it’s designed for – being small, getting places other cams can’t, and remaining user-friendly for beginners. The battery life is lacking for extended shooting durations, and night footage is still overcooked with PureVideo mode. But Go Ultra’s video is good in most areas, and does appear to be an improvement over the 3S in low light (I haven’t tested them side by side, so can’t say for sure). With its kid and pet-friendly design, I think Insta360 has found the right balance for casual creators with an active lifestyle.

Should I buy the Insta360 Go Ultra?

Buy it if…

You want to balance performance with portability
Video quality is high, but not the best of all action cameras out there. But the Go Ultra can also go places other action cameras can’t, at least without tonnes of extra mounts.

You don’t mind shorter battery life
I spent time shooting shorter clips on the Go Ultra, and recharging it little and often. If you plan to capture all-day events or sustained activities like rides or hikes, the battery life might be a limiting factor.

Don’t buy it if…

You want the smallest action camera
The Insta360 Go Ultra is small, but not quite as tiny as the Go 3S. At almost 15g less, the Go 3S might unlock even more possibilities.

You want a fully waterproof solution
The Action Pod is only splashproof, a fact that made me uncomfortable while shooting. If you shoot a lot of wet content, I’d go for a fully waterproofed model.

How I tested the Insta360 Go Ultra

  • I tested a full production model for three weeks
  • I mounted the camera on my hat, handlebars, and even my dog
  • I recorded videos during the day, sunset and after dark

Insta360 sent me a review sample of the Go Ultra Standard Bundle about three weeks before the official release date. This gave me enough time to test all the camera’s modes and mounting options, including those with and without the Action Pod, as well as with the magnetic clip on my hat and the magnetic pendant on hikes in the countryside.

Insta360 also supplied a large version of their pet harness, and I attached the camera to my dog out on walkies to see what footage looked like from the POV of a bouncy Flatcoated Retriever.

I used the Go Ultra wild swimming in a local river to test the waterproofing, tried it running, and even attached it to our car as we drove along a country lane. I shot in bright sunshine, at sunset and night – essentially, in all the lighting conditions I could think of for creators. I edited content straight from the camera to the Insta360 mobile app on my iPhone 15 Pro, as well as manually taking footage from the built-in SD card and editing it on my iMac.

Bluesky goes dark in Mississippi over age verification law

The US Supreme Court recently chose not to intervene in the enforcement of a Mississippi state law that requires social media sites to verify and track user ages. As a result, Twitter offshoot Bluesky will go dark in the state.

“Starting today, if you access Bluesky from a Mississippi IP address, you’ll see a message explaining why the app isn’t available,” wrote the company in a statement published online. “This block will remain in place while the courts decide whether the law will stand.”

The Mississippi law says that social media sites must verify the ages of new users and obtain parental consent before allowing kids under 18 to make an account.

The sites must also “make commercially reasonable efforts to develop and implement a strategy” that insulates known minors from harmful material and behavior, such as online bullying, sexual exploitation, or anything that may encourage substance abuse.

The law specifically excludes a number of services, including those whose primary function is to provide access to “online video games,” so Steam is exempt—but you can bet that Valve and every other big gaming company is closely watching the development of internet age verification laws in the US, UK, and elsewhere.

Bluesky, which promotes the idea that decentralized social media “protocols” should replace platforms like X, says that it cannot realistically follow Mississippi’s law.

“Unlike tech giants with vast resources, we’re a small team focused on building decentralized social technology that puts users in control,” said the company. “Age verification systems require substantial infrastructure and developer time investments, complex privacy protections, and ongoing compliance monitoring—costs that can easily overwhelm smaller providers. This dynamic entrenches existing big tech platforms while stifling the innovation and competition that benefits users.”

Bluesky does however, comply with the UK’s controversial Online Safety Act, which also requires websites to verify user ages. The company says that the UK’s law is narrower than Mississippi’s—it only requires age verification when a user tries to access specific material—and is therefore more realistic to implement.

“[In the UK], Bluesky is still accessible for everyone, age checks are required only for accessing certain content and features, and Bluesky does not know and does not track which UK users are under 18,” said the company. “Mississippi’s law, by contrast, would block everyone from accessing the site—teens and adults—unless they hand over sensitive information, and once they do, the law in Mississippi requires Bluesky to keep track of which users are children.”

Apps using Bluesky’s AT Protocol will make their own decisions about compliance, as the company’s announcement only applies to the Bluesky app itself. “We believe this flexibility is one of the strengths of decentralized systems—different providers can make decisions that align with their values and capabilities, especially during periods of regulatory uncertainty,” said the company.

Mississippi’s law may still wind up in the bin. The Supreme Court wasn’t convinced by the specific arguments brought by NetChoice, the tech industry group that raised the objection, but Justice Brett Kavanaugh nevertheless wrote that the law is “likely unconstitutional.”

The Supreme Court did affirm a Texas internet age verification law recently, although that one requires age verification only for sites that host a significant amount of “sexual material harmful to minors,” not for any user on any social media site.

‘Star Trek’ Journalists, Ranked

The potential for what journalism looks like in Star Trek is a heady idea that’s been around as long as the series itself. What does reporting the news look like in utopia? What does it mean that the Federation has its own news networks, alongside a host of interstellar media organizations? What does freedom of information mean in a universe that has Starfleet? And yet, we’ve actually had very few characters appear in the series as fully dedicated journalists and reporters.

That changed a little with this week’s episode of Strange New Worlds, “What Is Starfleet?”, which, well… okay, yeah. It was pretty atrocious journalism. But Mynor Lüken’s Beto Ortegas joins a rarefied crew of professional media in Star Trek to have significant roles in the series, for better or worse. So speaking of for better, at least, let’s take a look at who’s got their press hat on tightest in the arena of boldly going.

9) Beto Ortegas

Again, you should probably just read our recap of “What Is Starfleet?” to see why Beto is ranked here. There’s certainly an argument to be made that not necessarily all documentary filmmakers are journalists, but it’s pretty clear that Beto was, at least, trying to engage in investigative journalism in documenting life aboard Enterprise and its reflection of the Federation’s role. Emphasis on the trying there, because what he did really, really sucked!

8) Gannet

On the one hand, Gannet probably shouldn’t be on here. Her job as a journalist was in fact deep cover for her real work with Starfleet Intelligence during the events of Enterprise‘s fourth season—work that got her accused by Archer of potentially being a member of the human-supremacist group Terra Prime. On the other, while ostensibly acting as a journalist, Gannet did both wiretap translator devices at a conference to record attending delegates and, through Mayweather, did ultimately engage in a sexual relationship with a source while purportedly working on a story about the NX-01. Slightly different realm of ethics for an intelligence operative, but definitely not ideal for her cover story in journalism.

7) Natima Lang

Better known for her appearance in the Deep Space Nine episode “Profit and Loss” as a then-current professor of political ethics on Cardassia (and in actuality a radical member of the dissident movement fleeing the wrath of the Cardassian high command), Lang was previously a correspondent for the Cardassian Communication Service during the occupation of Bajor, working directly on Terok Nor. Unfortunately, it’s during that assignment that she met and fell in love with Quark, who promptly used her press access codes to directly steal money from the Cardassian government.

Good for Quark (although he was obviously not stealing from the Cardassian occupation forces for altruistic reasons), but deeply embarrassing for Lang.

6) Neelix

Neelix briefly dabbles in the world of independent journalism early on in Voyager, when he attempts to kickstart a daily news program aboard the ship in “Investigations” called A Briefing With Neelix. Although Neelix does attempt to rigorously defend his hard pivot from general interest puff pieces to investigative journalism when he breaks the news that Tom Paris had purportedly been removed from the ship for collaborating with the Kazon, even when pressured by Tuvok to drop his investigation, ultimately he does end up collaborating with Captain Janeway and Tuvok to allow A Briefing With Neelix to be used as bait to catch the real collaborator, Michael Jonas. Can you be state media if the state is a single starship?

5) Sylvia Ront

Do you know how bad everyone below Sylvia Ront on this list has to be at journalism to not even get past a character with a handful of minutes of screentime who simply just reads the broadcast news?

4) Jake Sisko

On the one hand, Jake gets away with an awful lot of his mistakes as a reporter for the Federation News Service on account of being a literal teenager on the front lines of one of the deadliest interstellar conflicts ever seen by the Federation. Hell, he reports from aboard the Defiant during military engagements and even willingly stays behind on the Dominion-occupied DS9 to report the stories of what is really going on there when the Federation is forced to abandon the station, even if his stories are ultimately censored from distribution by the Dominion.

On the other hand, kid or otherwise, Jake is kind of just not that great at his job. For one of his first stories, about a potential non-aggression agreement between Bajor and the Dominion, Jake sources key contextual information—that Captain Sisko, and through him the Federation, is against the pact—from offhand conversations with his father, who was unaware that his son had joined the Federation News Service. Ben shouldn’t have been discussing Starfleet matters with his son, arguably, but Jake also should’ve reached out to his dad as commander of DS9 and Starfleet’s primary representative for comment officially, instead of simply going “the source is literally my dad.” Speaking of that, what he should’ve done was have the story assigned to another reporter, given his direct personal relationship to important figures involved in it!

3) Marci Collins

Marci Collins—the late ’90s 3 Action News reporter we see in Voyager‘s Y2K-era flashback “11:59″—doesn’t really get to do much other than be a consistent voice reporting on the events the audience is watching unfold in the episode, as we see the story of how one of Janeway’s ancestors was convinced to close their bookstore and make way for the construction of the Millennium Gate, the first self-sustaining civic environment, a predecessor to future interstellar colonies. But the fact that the simple act of being a journalist who does their job completely perfunctorily makes her one of the best Star Trek has put on screen speaks to the franchise’s peculiar history with the press.

We’re ranking her above Ront simply because she’s on screen a bit more.

2) Richter

A reporter for the Federation News Network who appears in Picard‘s very first episode, we as an audience are kind of meant to see Richter in part as a bit of an antagonist: she agrees to a very strict set of conditions in order to get access to interview the retired Jean-Luc, including the stipulation that she not ask questions about why he left Starfleet. She does so anyway, leading to Picard having an angry outburst on camera and storming off mid-interview, reflecting very badly on himself in the process.

So sure, boo, the episode frames it as our beloved hero is seemingly ambushed and made to feel bad by a “mean” reporter. But even putting aside whether or not Richter should’ve agreed to the interview on the basis of controlling what questions she can ask, she did ask a perfectly reasonable question that was of considerable public interest to a person who still wielded a great deal of political power. The reporter behind the exposé “Starfleet’s Shame” that uncovered the misconduct (misconstrued or otherwise) by Captain Freeman aboard the Cerritos during the events of Lower Decks season three’s climax, Nuzé is shown to be an incredibly rigorous reporter, especially in light of Captain Freeman’s panicked overreaction to her presence aboard the ship. Her extensive report is not only built on interviewing tons of sources, but also her getting around Freeman’s attempts to blacklist certain personnel from talking to the press (mainly Mariner) speaks to her diligence as a reporter.

Also, she’s literally named “Nuzé.” Talk about the perfect person for the job.

The Best Google Pixel Phones of 2025, Tested and Reviewed: Which Model to Buy, Cases and Accessories, Feature Drops

You get all the same software features as the Pixel 9 series, but there are some extras to take advantage of all the screens. Made You Look, for example, plays a cute animation on the outer screen to make sure your kiddo stares at it when you’re trying to capture a photo. When you’re on a Google Meet call, you can now utilize all the screens so that everyone around you can see the person you’re speaking with, and that means using all the cameras too, so the person on the other end doesn’t have to see just your face.

At the end of the day, this is still a $1,799 smartphone, and that’s just too high a price to pay. But if you have the cash and love folding phones, especially when paired with a Pixel’s smarts and camera prowess, this is one of the best options available.

How Long Is Your Pixel Supported?

The Pixel 10 series, Pixel 9 series, Pixel 8 series, Pixel 9a, and Pixel 8a will get seven years of Android OS upgrades and security updates. The 2023 Pixel 7a will receive three years of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates from the date of launch, the same as older Pixels. Google has a page you can check to see exactly what month your Pixel phone will stop receiving updates. Security updates reduce the risk of malware, keep your phone bug-free, and make it more secure. Android version updates introduce new features—cosmetic and functional—that improve the OS as a whole.

Pixel phones also happen to be the first to receive any kind of Android update, so as soon as Google releases a new version, like Android 16, you can download it immediately by heading to Settings > System > System Update > Check for Update. You can also test beta versions of Android, but you’ll need to enroll your device. (Make sure to back up your phone first!) Pixels are also privy to the feature drops Google issues every few months, which include features from newer Pixels coming to older models and brand-new features for the latest devices.

There are a few other Pixel phones worth considering if you don’t want any of the above choices. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro (7/10, WIRED Recommends) are available through official channels and third-party retailers (until supplies last). The key is to not pay more than $500 or $600 for either of them; otherwise, you may as well put that money toward the Pixel 9 or Pixel 10 series.

I do not recommend you buy any older Pixel devices. Several Pixel A-series phones have been put under a battery performance program to mitigate the risk of overheating or swelling batteries. These software updates have crippled the battery life on those phones, and Google has provided customers with battery replacement options or Google Store credit for a new Pixel phone. These potential issues mean it’s just not worth the risk of buying a Pixel 7a or Pixel 6a. The Pixel 8a (8/10, WIRED Recommends) doesn’t seem to show problems yet, but I’d still throw caution to the wind.

Pixel A-Series Battery Issues

In 2025, some Google Pixel 4a and Pixel 6a owners have received mandatory updates that purposefully degrade the performance of the battery to prevent overheating. Your phone may have been working fine before, but Google issued these updates as a preventative measure, and not every device was affected. Similarly, some Pixel 7a devices may encounter battery swelling issues.

If your phone has been affected, you have two options. You can get a free battery replacement—Google has a registration page for the Pixel 4a, Pixel 6a, and Pixel 7a. If that isn’t going to work for you, you can get Google Store credit for the Pixel 4a and Pixel 6a to put toward a new Pixel phone.

These issues seem to have only affected some batteries in the A-series phones, suggesting it’s likely a supplier issue. What about the newer Pixel 9a? Here’s a statement a Google spokesperson provided to WIRED: “Google continuously improves Pixel testing based on user feedback and thoroughly investigates reported incidents for all components, including batteries. With Pixel 9a, we delivered the largest and longest-lasting battery of any A-series yet. We’ve been encouraged by its reception so far and are confident in the phone’s longevity and durability.”

Ideally, this battery issue has been rectified in the latest model, but we’ll be monitoring it over the next few years.

What Does Pixel Care+ Include?

When you purchase a Pixel from Google, you’ll see the option to add Pixel Care+ for protection. It’s only available in the US through the Google Store and Google Fi. The monthly option can run for up to 60 months, whereas the fixed pricing is for a 2-year term. Here’s what you get.

Pixel Care+ starts at $9 per month or $179 and includes unlimited accidental damage protection, $0 screen and battery repairs, replacements that ship in a day, and priority support from Pixel experts. That pricing is for the Pixel 10, and it goes up for the pricier devices. For example, the Pixel 10 Pro will cost $13 per month, or $239 for the 2-year term. There’s no Pixel Care+ option for the Pixel 9a.

Pixel Care+ with Loss and Theft starts at $10 per month or $199 and includes the same protections as mentioned above but includes two claims of loss and theft every 12 months. Weirdly, Loss and Theft coverage is not available in New York state.

You Can DeGoogle Your Pixel Phone

Love Google’s Pixel phones but want to get away from using Google services? It’s a little ironic, but you can actually use a different operating system with the Pixel instead of the built-in Android. We’ve tested and really like /e/OS, a privacy-first operating system that’s based on the Android Open Source Project. While you can install it yourself, it requires a bit of technical know-how, you can buy a refurbished Pixel from Murena with /e/OS installed already. The Best Pixel Cases and Accessories

I’ve written a broader guide on the Best Pixel 9 Cases and Accessories here, but here are a few selections for your perusal. We’ll be testing cases for the Pixel 10 series soon.

Official Google Case

This silicone case lets you match your Pixel phone’s color. It’s durable and nice to touch, with raised edges on the front to protect the screen. It’s made with recycled plastics, and while the older cases attract lint and dust easily, this revamped case does a better job of resisting them. I also like that it keeps the back flush, so the camera bump isn’t so obvious. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold case is made of a hard-shell polycarbonate, but it’s fairly slim and lightweight compared to third-party cases I’ve tested. Access to the buttons is open, and I like how it gives you an easier way to unfold the phone.

This is our favorite case overall for the Pixel 9 and Pixel 8A series. It has clicky buttons and incredibly grippy edges (hence the name). It feels robust yet fairly slim, and you can choose a snazzy design. Just know that you have to apply this “skin” to the back of the case. There’s a lot of room for error here, so be careful, and watch Dbrand’s installation video for tips. There’s MagSafe support so you can use your Pixel with MagSafe accessories, and it worked exceptionally in my testing.

Peak Design Everyday Case

This is hands-down the best case if you frequently attach your Pixel to the handlebars of a bike or an electric scooter. Peak Design’s mounting system lets you magnetically affix the phone to its Universal Bike Mount ($50), and it stays put. After nearly a year of testing, I’ve yet to have a phone fall off my ride using this mounting system. It makes use of Apple’s MagSafe system, so it works with plenty of MagSafe accessories, even wireless chargers. The company also has several other magnetic accessories, like a car vent mount. The case itself is nice; I just wish the edges were raised more for better screen protection. It comes in more colors than ever.

This charging adapter is all you need to recharge your Pixel, whichever model you have. The newest high-end Pixel phones don’t come with chargers in the box, so if you don’t have any spare USB-C chargers, it’s worth picking one up. This one’s prongs fold up, so it’s great for travel too.

Dbrand Screen Protector

Dbrand gives you two screen protectors in this package, and when I initially tested it, there was no application tool, so I had to freehand the installation. The current Prism 2.0 version thankfully now comes with a tool, so it should be much easier to align. You get all the other tools in the box to wipe down your phone and ensure there are no specks of dust on it before you install the protector.

Our Favorite Pixel Software Features

Pixels have many great software features, but some need to be toggled on. It can also be hard to remember that all these features exist, so here are most of the top ones.

There are some key features on Pixels that you won’t find on any other Android phone. Some of these are available only on select Pixels—the Tensor chip started with the Pixel 6, and currently, the Tensor G4 is in the Pixel 9 range. Here’s a breakdown:

Call Screen: When you get a call from an unknown number, Google Assistant will scan and flag it if it’s suspected spam or a robocall. If it’s simply a number you don’t recognize, you can have Assistant take the call. You’ll see a real-time transcription of what’s happening, so you can end the call right away if it’s a telemarketer or answer if it turns out to be a long-lost high school friend. If it’s someone important, you can give Assistant responses to recite if you’re unable to take the call—it offers up contextual replies now, too. Remember to turn it on by opening up the dialer app and heading to Settings (three dots on the top right) > Spam and Call Screen.

Wait Times.

Wait Times and Direct My Call: When you call a business in the phone app, you’ll see an estimated wait time until someone real picks up (it doesn’t work with every business). Google’s Direct My Call feature also transcribes the entire call and separates the menu options so you can see them without having to listen intently to the call. More recently, for some numbers, Direct My Call will cache responses so you’ll immediately see menu options without needing to wait for the automated response to go through every number. You can turn this on by going to the phone app’s Settings > Direct My Call.

Hold for Me.

Hold for Me: If you’ve been placed on hold with a business number, you can ask Google Assistant to take over. It will play a loud chime when the person on the other end is back. No need to listen to hold music! Toggle it on in the phone app’s Settings > Hold for Me. This feature is available on most Pixels but only works in select countries, including the US, Australia, Japan, the UK, and Canada.

Clear Calling: If you have a Pixel 7 or newer, you can turn on this feature to enhance the other caller’s voice and reduce their background noise. Head to Settings > Sound & Vibration > Clear Calling to toggle it on. It also works on Google’s Pixel Buds Pro.

Call Notes (Tensor G4 and newer; with 12-plus GB RAM): You can enable this in the dialer app by going to Settings > Call Notes and making sure the toggle is on. This doesn’t activate every time you’re on a call. Rather, you have to tap the More button when you’re on a call and tap Call Notes to start it. It more or less records the conversation (it notifies the other person that the call is being recorded), and at the end, it’ll give you a summary of important points from the call right in the call history log, such as price quotes, phone numbers, or addresses. Sometimes it gets information wrong, as the accuracy of the transcription depends on the call quality, but you can play back the entire recording yourself to double-check.

Scam Detection: This feature detects conversation patterns as you are on the phone with a suspicious number to warn you when someone is deploying a classic scam tactic. It also works in Google’s Messages app. You can turn it on by going to the phone app, then tapping the three-dot menu icon at the top right, and hitting Settings > Scam Detection.

Reverse Phone Number Lookup: Don’t recognize the phone number from an incoming call? In the call app, you can now quickly look up a number without having to manually run a search yourself.

Take a Message.

Take a Message (Tensor G5): Google is revamping voicemails with Take a Message. It’s similar to transcribed voicemails, though that feature doesn’t always work and may depend on your carrier. Take a Message bypasses the standard voicemail (your normal voicemail will only kick in with missed calls when your phone is off or out of network). The caller will be told to leave a message, and this recording will be auto-transcribed, visible right in the call history of the phone app. It’ll even offer actionable steps, like adding a reminder or an event to your calendar.

Pixel VIPs: This is a new widget that gives you one-tap access to your favorite contacts. But it’s more than that. Tap on one of your contacts and you’ll see a beautifully designed page that offers quick access to call the contact and message them on various platforms. It’ll show the last messages between you two, share location, weather updates, and the time for their area, and you can add notes if you want to remember specific things. You can access this the same way you add a widget; it sits under the Contacts app.

Transcription and Translation Features

Translated Phone Calls in Your Voice (Tensor G5): You can translate a phone call in real time, but what makes Google’s approach unique is that the company will make the translated voice sound like your own (or the person on the other end). That way, it still sounds like you’re talking to someone you know, rather than a robotic voice. No audio is recorded, and data isn’t stored (it works on-device). It’s only available for a few languages, like English, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

Live Translate.

Live Translate: In select messaging apps, Pixels will automatically know when someone sends a message in a language other than your default. It’ll translate it (if you wish), and you’ll be able to respond in that same language. More than 50 languages are supported, though you’ll need to download the languages you want to see translated by heading to Settings > System > Live Translate.

Live Caption: Pixels can automatically transcribe any video playing on the screen. You can quickly toggle this on by tapping one of the volume buttons and tapping on the square button below the volume slider (or head to Settings > Sound and Vibration > Live Caption). If the video is in a different language, you can even see it translated (only on Tensor-powered Pixels), though you’ll need to download one of the supported languages. It can even caption phone calls.

Samsung’s new $29,999 Micro RGB TV looks ridiculously good

Last week, Samsung announced the world’s first Micro RGB TV and while it sounded fantastic on paper, you can never really get a good sense of what a fresh display looks like until you see it in person. But after going to Samsung’s new headquarters in New Jersey, I can attest that it is truly a sight to behold.

Now, before we get to the TV itself, it’s probably a good idea to dive into what’s going on with Samsung’s latest panel tech. In many ways, Micro RGB is a step up from current Mini LED screens. On a technical level, the Micro LEDs and the self-emissive pixels of Samsung’s The Wall probably remain the more sophisticated end goal for next-gen TVs.

At its core, Micro RGB is still based on LCD tech, the difference is that instead of using blue or white backlighting like a lot of sets today, it features individually controlled red, green and blue Micro LEDs (hence the name Micro RGB) to produce an even wider range of colors. The result is that Samsung claims this is the first TV to cover 100 percent of the BT.2020 standard. For context, that covers more than 75 percent of the visible spectrum and has an even wider color range than what you get from DCI-P3, which is one of the most commonly used high-end standards for modern filmmaking.

Samsung Micro RGB TV

This sort of color richness is hard to appreciate unless you’re standing right in front of it.

In person, that means the TV can produce stunningly rich and vivid colors that put Samsung’s other top-tier TVs to shame, including the new Neo QLED QN90F which starts at a whopping $26,999. Like its sibling, Samsung’s Micro RGB TV is only available in one size (115 inches) and has a similar design, while its panel features a 144Hz refresh rate and a matte glare-free coating. But that’s kind of where the similarities end, because this new flagship model features four times the number of dimming zones. Furthermore, because the Micro RGB LEDs require more computing power to manage all those pixels, Samsung had to create a new RGB Engine AI processor to properly control everything.

In short, this is a lot of words to describe what might be the best-looking TV I’ve ever seen. While I only got to view some demo footage (which admittedly is designed to make the set look its best), I couldn’t help but appreciate the sheer intensity of the hues and shades on display. When the video loop shifted to primarily blue and green scenes, the TV’s color depth was almost overwhelming. That said, due to the immense size of the panel, when you get up close, it’s easy to see individual pixels. However, when you’re sitting in its sweet spot (about 11.5 feet from the display), everything looks ridiculously sharp and overflows with detail. And even for those off-center, there appeared to be no falloff in brightness or saturation.

While Samsung’s $26,999 Neo QLED QN90F boasts a price tag that’s nearly as expensive as the $29,999 Micro RGB TV, there’s still a very obvious difference in color.

Now, of course, the major downside of Samsung’s new Micro RGB TV is that at $29,999, it makes everything but The Wall (which starts at a cool $40,000) seem cheap. But the funny thing is that when compared to the Neo QLED QN90F, which Samsung also had on display in a nearby room, the difference in quality and color was immediately obvious. This sort of makes me wonder why anyone with super deep pockets would even consider the latter just to save a few thousand dollars, because when you see them in person, there’s no doubt which set is superior.

Unfortunately, the Micro RGB’s full glory doesn’t translate across the internet due to the much more limited specs of the web. It’s one of those things you need to see for yourself to fully grasp. But if you’re the kind of person with enough money that you don’t need to care about price tags, Samsung’s latest flagship should be an immediate contender as the centerpiece in your mansion.

Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle: One-minute review

The Farming Simulator crowd is a pretty diehard one, but unlike the sim racing community they aren’t blessed with a world of choice when it comes to dedicated peripherals and accessories. The Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle is one of the few options available with a combination of a wheel, pedals, and input-rich side panel.

The wheel and pedals are pretty stock standard, bordering on being a little underwhelming. Both are made entirely of plastic with a real hollow feeling and no reassuring weight to them. There’s no force feedback on offer here either, instead the wheel relies on a tightly sprung return mechanism to recentre the wheel in a pretty aggressive and haphazard way. The pedals also lack any kind of resistance, both the accelerator and brake feel the same under foot with an identical size and travel. It all has a very arcade vibe but at least it gets the job done.

The control panel is a different story altogether, so much so it almost feels at odds with the rest of the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle. Once again it’s all plastic, but it’s much more solid and each of the 24 buttons are snappy and responsive. The front loader joystick is the highlight on the entire bundle, it feels premium and offers a great level of control.

I fired up Farming Simulator 25 and was delighted to see how well the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle was pre-mapped. Not only was the entire setup recognized immediately, it was truly plug and play with every in-game control for every machine I tried already configured out of the box. It made the experience far more welcoming than the Thrustmaster FarmStick X which required almost entirely manual setup before I could begin working the fields.

The lack of force feedback meant it wasn’t exactly a realistic experience, the entire time I spent behind the wheel I was fully aware it was essentially a toy, but it made me enjoy my farming a trailer-load more than when I’ve played with a controller or keyboard and mouse.

Just like a scarecrow standing alone in a field, the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle seems to cast a pretty lonely figure in the category of farming simulation gear.

Racers are blessed with an abundant range of wheels but it’s rare to see such a focused piece of tech. Much like that experienced, old scarecrow, the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle is somewhat of a veteran at this stage too. Celebrating its 10th birthday in 2025, this wheel and button box combo was originally released by sim hardware manufacturer Saitek shortly before its acquisition by Logitech back in 2016.

Logi then rebadged and re-released the Heavy Equipment Bundle under its Logitech G brand a couple of years later and it remains as one of the only dedicated farming sim rigs in the market. Little has changed since the original, you’ll still get a three-piece bundle of a wheel, pedals and side panel, and the price remains close to what it was at a reasonably steep $329.99 / £229.99 / €289.99. If you’ve already got a wheel and pedals, the side panel is available on its own for $169.99 / £139.99 / €169.99.

This sees the Logitech G Heavy Equipment bundle come in a chunk cheaper than its only major competitor, the Hori Farming Vehicle Control System, which will set you back just shy of $400. It also keeps it in-line with the sim racing staple Logitech G920, which does away with the side panel in favor of a higher-quality wheel. If you play more than just Farming Simulator it may be worth looking at that standalone option and spending a little more to pick up a higher quality wheel.

Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle: Design and features

While it may have arrived in a large box featuring Logitech’s slick, modern G branding, the Heavy Equipment Bundle itself is distinctly old school. This combo is now a decade old and it shows every bit of that age. There’s an instant giveaway too, the product photo on the box is noticeably low resolution and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same one that Saitek was using all those years ago. First impressions certainly weren’t excellent.

This experience wasn’t quickly improved when opening the box either. Call me a packaging snob but I’m a sucker for a slick unboxing experience and I wasn’t granted that here. There’s not much going on in there and it was all flanked by basic, thin brown cardboard. I know Logitech isn’t pitching this as a premium device but if I’d invested more than $300 on it I’d feel a little short changed.

It’s a simple bundle but has everything you need to get going, no extra gear required. You’ll also often find it bundled with a copy of Farming Simulator too which is a nice touch. In the box is an 11” wheel with an integrated table clamp, built-in USB-A cable and a fixed spinner knob.

A two-pedal accelerator and brake pedal set connects to the wheelbase with an included cable, while the side panel also includes an attached clamp and its own USB-A cable. It means needing to offer up two ports on your PC, though also allows the side panel to be used independently from the wheel as your PC will see them as two entirely separate devices. That’s mainly a blessing but also a slight curse, more on why later.

Build quality is disappointingly average across most of the Heavy Equipment Bundle. For something with ‘heavy’ in its name the whole thing is unbelievably light and rather cheap feeling. It’s plastic everywhere you look and I constantly found myself wanting for the smallest smidgen of rubberisation, upholstery or even just a little embossed texture.

The Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle wheel features a mirrored layout with four buttons and two thumb sticks on each side. These are nicely positioned and reasonably sized and I had no problem reaching and accurately using them while working the farm. Around the back of the wheel are two further buttons that while well placed, are irritatingly loose and loud. I streamed my Farming Simulator 25 gameplay on Twitch and had multiple comments from viewers about just how intrusive those rear button clacks were.

The side panel is much better in this regard and almost feels at odds with the wheel and pedal set. While not mechanical, each button is much more solid with no rattle or wobble, and they’re nearly arranged with plenty of space between each. Presses are firm but responsive with a gentle tactile bump and audible click. It’s all very pleasant. The dual-mode joystick is a nice size and has enough resistance to offer fine control without feeling like a workout. I’d have liked a little more strength to the resistance of the throttle wheel, but for how often it’s used it’s perfectly passable too.

It may not actually mention farming anywhere in its official title, but the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle’s intentions are clear—all it really wants to do is help you plough, sow, and harvest. This is a dedicated farming wheel in all but name.

You’ll need to be establishing your homestead on a computer though because the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle offers no console support whatsoever. The good news is there’s compatibility with both Windows and MacOS, somewhat of a rarity in the gaming world. It’s also impressively plug and play, so much so it wasn’t even recognized by Logitech’s G Hub, so there isn’t even an app to install before you can hop in the game.

Logitech has worked in partnership with developer Giants Software on the Heavy Equipment Bundle so it’s in the natively supported Farming Simulator 25 where I spent most of my time behind the wheel. Firing the game up for the first time I was delighted to immediately be greeted by not only a fully–pre-configured wheel and side panel, but the game also showing me correctly labelled inputs alongside menu items.

I was able to navigate straight through menus and into a new save without ever touching my keyboard or mouse, relying mainly on the thumb stick and button set on the wheel itself.

Arriving on the farm I jumped straight into the nearest truck to test out the most basic driving controls. They worked just fine, but as someone used to using pretty high-spec sim racing gear I found the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle wheel to be incredibly toylike.

There’s no force feedback or even basic rumble effect, just an overly keen centre spring that offers a tiny amount of resistance when steering but sends the wheel rubber-banding back to a default position like a cartoon saloon door. It’s not exactly immersive but I’ll concede it’s far more fun than using a controller or keyboard and I’d still rather use this wheel than no wheel at all.

Jumping over to some more complicated agricultural machinery is where things got more confusing. Every button was bound and they were all labelled in game, that was good, but the problem was both the Heavy Equipment Bundle wheel and side panel use the same input numbers and the game rarely told me which it was referring to. It seemed as if it only wanted to show me wheel labels rather than side panel numbers, a slight problem given it has some three times more inputs to remember. It meant blindly pressing just about every button to work out what did what and then needing to memorize them.

There is an incredible amount of customisation potential here though and even just using the default button maps I had a blast. I can imagine experienced digital farmers getting a huge amount of value from the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle side panel, particularly if you took the time to refine the input layout to something a little more memorable.

In my testing it was the dual-mode joystick that proved the standout addition. Controlling the intricate movements of an excavator arm felt natural, and more importantly, incredibly fun. I did need to go in and rebind a couple of movements here to gain full control, but once I did you’d have a hard time dragging me out of the driver’s seat.

The fundamental gameplay improvements brought about by the joystick made me long for a little more input variety because beyond this (and the basic throttle wheel) the Heavy Equipment Bundle side panel is just an array of simple buttons. There are four of what appear initially to be two-state switches, but are actually just buttons in costume with a switch-style keycap.

Given how many farming systems are two-state, think raising and lowering a harvester head or extending and retracting an auger, this functionality would have been very welcome as it’s not always immediately obvious in game whether you’ve got your gear in the right position and having some real world visual feedback would have helped.

While a majority of my time with the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle was spent in Farming Simulator 25, I also tried jumping over to a couple of other similar titles to see how it fared. Results were mixed. In Euro Truck Simulator 2 I had to manually configure every input, even down to simple left and right turn controls, though this was simple enough and the game recognized each input.

Motorway driving is rather dull without any level of force feedback however, so I probably wouldn’t recommend it. Roadcraft offered no functionality at all, though this is true of a lot of wheels so I’m inclined to lay blame more on the software side than the wheel itself.

How I tested the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle

  • I clamped the bundle to my desk and spent hours playing Farming Simulator 25 on PC
  • I tried a range of farmyard machinery and general controls
  • I also checked performance in other, non-officially supported games

I added the Logitech G Heavy Equipment Bundle to my PC gaming setup featuring an Intel Core i9 14900k CPU and AMD Radeon 9070XT graphics card.

Setup was simple with integrated screw clamp mounts on both the wheel and side panel attaching firmly to my desk, with the pedals just resting on the floor. Both the wheel and side panel need their own USB connection, though both performed just fine when connected to either a USB hub or directly into my motherboard.

Most of my testing was focused on Farming Simulator 25 through Xbox GamePass where I tested the out-of-the-box button mappings of a range of vehicles for the first couple of hours. I then jumped into the in-game menus and made a few manual tweaks to check how simple things were to re-configure to my personal preference.

After ploughing a few fields I swapped over to RoadCraft and Euro Truck Simulator 2 to check performance in titles it’s not officially designed for.
