Ethereum: Validator Exits Post-$41 Million Hack

by admin September 11, 2025

  • Kiln exits all of its Ethereum (ETH) validators: Details
  • Swissborg loses $41 million after third-party API attack

As part of “additional precautionary measures to safeguard client assets,” Kiln, a large-scale staking platform, is exiting Ethereum (ETH) validators. This might significantly increase the exit queue of the second-largest blockchain.

Kiln exits all of its Ethereum (ETH) validators: Details

According to the official statement shared by its team, Kiln, a multi-blockchain staking protocol, is exiting all of its Ethereum (ETH) validators. The withdrawal is organized as part of security measures following the Sept. 8, 2025, attack on its partner.

1/10 🧵 Following our announcement yesterday regarding the Solana incident involving SwissBorg, Kiln is taking additional precautionary measures to safeguard client assets across all the networks.https://t.co/ePKBaStIet

— Kiln 🧱🔥 (@Kiln_finance) September 9, 2025

Laszlo Szabo, co-founder and CEO at Kiln, explained the motivation behind the ETH validation exit for his company:

We took immediate action once we identified a potential compromise in our infrastructure. Exiting validators is the responsible step to protect stakers, and we are monitoring the process closely to ensure the security and reliability of our services.

The exact volume of Ether that was staked by Kiln — as well as the number of validator nodes it operated — remains undisclosed. At the same time, Szabo specified that the exit will take between 10 and 42 days.

Clients’ funds remain safe, the statement says.

Observers noticed that the validator exit queue added 700,000 ETH since the hack.

Swissborg loses $41 million after third-party API attack

Two days ago, on Sept. 8, 2025, Swissborg, a Kiln partner, registered a hacker attack. The malefactors used leaked API keys to access funds, including Solana (SOL) holdings.

The net volume of assets affected exceeds $41 million in equivalent. This is roughly equal to 1% of all assets under management at Swissborg.

The company has already announced plans to fully reimburse all clients whose funds have been stolen by attackers.

Institutional Bets Grow Even as Bitcoin Consolidates Below $113K: Analysts Explain Why

by admin September 11, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

Bitcoin (BTC) trades around $112,260, consolidating within a tight range as investors weigh bullish technical setups against global macroeconomic headwinds.

The leading asset moved between an intraday high of $113,138 and a low of $110,812, showing the tight range that has dominated trading in recent sessions.

Key momentum indicators suggest cautious optimism. Support remains firm at $110,000, while moving averages at $109,300 and $101,000 strengthen the bullish case.

On the upside, resistance at $113,000–$115,000 remains the next crucial hurdle, with analysts noting that a breakout above this band could unlock renewed momentum.

Institutional Bets Boost Bitcoin Confidence

Institutional activity continues to shape sentiment despite mixed price action. Market watchers highlight growing expectations of U.S. Federal Reserve rate cuts following weaker jobs data as a stabilizing force for Bitcoin.

Meanwhile, liquidity inflows from crypto ETFs and corporate treasury allocations remain a significant driver of demand.

Japanese firm Metaplanet Inc. recently raised $1.4 billion to expand its Bitcoin holdings, growing its reputation as a proxy play for investors in Asia. Analysts draw parallels to MicroStrategy’s long-term accumulation strategy, noting that such moves show institutional conviction even as spot prices consolidate.

ETF data also paints a complex picture. Fidelity’s spot Bitcoin ETF recently saw $55.8 million in outflows, signaling short-term caution among investors. However, the broader trend of institutional accumulation suggests confidence in Bitcoin’s role as a hedge and long-term store of value.

Analysts Expect Breakout Potential

Despite near-term hesitation, analysts remain cautiously bullish. Many point to accumulation patterns and resilient demand as signs that Bitcoin is preparing for its next decisive move. If BTC can reclaim and sustain levels above $115,000, it could confirm the start of a new rally phase.

For now, consolidation remains the dominant theme, with macroeconomic policy, ETF flows, and institutional strategies dictating the pace of the next breakout. As one analyst put it, Bitcoin’s ability to attract long-term institutional bets during uncertainty may be the clearest sign yet that its next major move is only a matter of time.

Ethereum slashes 39 validators after SSV network errors

by admin September 11, 2025

Ethereum faced a rare mass slashing event with 39 validators penalized due to operator errors tied to the SSV Network.

Summary

  • 39 validators tied to SSV Network were slashed after operational errors by Ankr and Allnodes.
  • Each validator lost around 0.3 ETH, with further losses from inactivity leaks.
  • Event highlights risks of validator mismanagement as Ethereum faces high exit queues and market volatility.

On Sept. 10, 39 validators were penalized, according to data from blockchain explorer Beaconcha.in. making it one of the largest coordinated slashing events to affect Ethereum (ETH) since the switch to proof-of-stake in 2022.

The incident, which was caused by operator errors related to the SSV Network, highlights the risks associated with poorly maintained infrastructure when staking.

What caused Ethereum’s mass slashing event?

The slashing was linked to third-party staking providers using distributed validator technology. Ankr triggered penalties during scheduled maintenance, while duplicate validator setups during a migration from Allnodes led to further slashing. Every validator lost about 0.3 ETH, or about $1,300, and inactivity leaks worsened the losses.

The penalties, though severe, were not the consequence of malicious activity or protocol errors. Instead, they demonstrate how operational errors can result in substantial financial losses for validators.

Slashing remains rare on Ethereum. Fewer than 500 of 1.2 million validators have been affected since the Beacon Chain launched in 2020, but this event was notable for its scale.

Why it matters

To ensure network integrity, Ethereum’s slashing mechanism penalizes careless or negligent behavior. Despite the use of advanced infrastructure like SSV’s DVT, the Sept. 10 incident demonstrates that human error remains a vulnerability in the system.

The timing coincides with increased strain on Ethereum’s staking ecosystem. Over 699,000 ETH were added to the exit queue in August, causing withdrawal delays of up to 12 days.

According to Validator Queue data, as of this writing, there are over 2.5 million Ethereum waiting to be unstaked, which is an 18-month high. The 45-day wait time currently in effect coincides with a decline in Ethereum price.

Still, institutional interest remains strong. Despite continuous churn, Ethereum has added more than 50,000 new validators since May 2025 in response to U.S. regulatory clarity earlier this year.

Trump’s Stalled CFTC Chair Nominee Takes Feud With Winklevoss Twins Public

by admin September 11, 2025

In brief

  • Brian Quintenz, President Trump’s nominee to head the CFTC, publicly released screenshots of purported Signal messages with Gemini founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss.
  • Quintenz claimed that they tried to derail his nomination after he wouldn’t commit to their demands regarding CFTC reform.
  • According to Quintenz, the Winklevoss brothers threatened to contact President Trump directly about the matter, and his Senate confirmation vote was subsequently pulled at the White House’s request.

Brian Quintenz, President Donald Trump’s long-stalled pick to head the CFTC, escalated a spat with Gemini founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss Wednesday, publicly posting what he said were screenshots of conversations with the twin crypto entrepreneurs regarding their reported attempts to derail his nomination.

The images show what appears to be a text conversation on messaging app Signal between Quintenz and the Winklevosses on July 24. Decrypt reached out to a Gemini representative to confirm the accuracy of the screenshots, but did not immediately receive a response.

In the conversation, the Winklevoss brothers grill the nominee over his reaction to, and enthusiasm regarding, a complaint filed by their crypto exchange Gemini in June over how the CFTC handled an investigation and eventual lawsuit against the company.

I’ve never been inclined to release private messages. But in light of my support for the President and belief that he might have been misled, I’ve posted here the messages that include the questions Tyler Winklevoss asked me pertaining to their prior litigation with the CFTC.

I… pic.twitter.com/MN75M1XUpT

— Brian Quintenz (@BrianQuintenz) September 10, 2025

In 2022, the regulator sued Gemini for making “material false or misleading statements” to regulators years prior about its Bitcoin offerings. Gemini ultimately settled the suit this January, paying $5 million without admitting or denying any wrongdoing.

In the text conversation with Quintenz, the Winklevosses appear to take issue with Quintenz’s excitement about their complaint, and flexed their closeness with the president.

“Our complaint raises serious questions and concerns about the culture of the agency that you are about to chair and its overall fitness on the eve of it being contemplated as a major regulator for the crypto industry,” Tyler wrote, according to the screenshots. “Cultural reform, which includes rectifying what happened to us, should be the highest priority.”

Per the texts, Tyler went on to quiz Quintenz about his commitment to that goal, and said he was potentially going to reach out to “the president himself” to discuss the matter.

“I believe these texts make it clear what they were after from me, and what I refused to promise,” Quintenz wrote today on X. “It’s my understanding that after this exchange they contacted the president and asked that my confirmation be paused for reasons other than what is reflected in these texts.”

Quintenz went on to emphasize his closeness with Trump and his commitment to supporting his agenda.

The CFTC nominee, who currently heads global policy at venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz, previously served as a CFTC commissioner during the first Trump administration. Trump nominated him to chair the committee in February, but his confirmation has stalled for months. Days after the texts described above were reportedly exchanged, a Senate committee pulled a vote on Quintenz’s nomination, at the request of the White House.

In the weeks following the botched vote, top crypto lobbying groups urged the president to stand by his nomination of Quintenz, who is widely expected to treat the industry favorably at a crucial moment for its interaction with the CFTC.

Pending crypto market structure legislation would give the relatively obscure regulator extensive new powers over the vast majority of the digital asset economy and companies including the Winklevoss’ Gemini, which plans to go public on Wall Street later this week.

Native Markets Leads Early Voting for Hyperliquid’s USDH Stablecoin Contract

by admin September 11, 2025

Good Morning, Asia. Here’s what’s making news in the markets:

Welcome to Asia Morning Briefing, a daily summary of top stories during U.S. hours and an overview of market moves and analysis. For a detailed overview of U.S. markets, see CoinDesk’s Crypto Daybook Americas.

The first signs of how validators are leaning in Hyperliquid’s hotly contested stablecoin vote are in, and the Stripe-aligned Native Markets team has an early lead.

As of Thursday morning Hong Kong time, Native Markets has secured 30.8% of the delegated stake, led by heavyweight validators infinitefield.xyz (13.5%) and Alphaticks (5.2%).

Paxos Labs, the New York–regulated issuer behind PayPal’s PYUSD, sits at 7.6% with backing from B-Harvest and HyBridge. Ethena has picked up 4.5%, while Agora, Frax, and Sky, despite splashy proposals, have yet to attract meaningful support, though many of the most prominent validators have yet to cast their virtual vote.

The bigger picture: more than half of stake, 57%, remains unassigned.

That block includes some of the most influential validators on Hyperliquid, such as Nansen x HypurrCollective (the single largest validator with over 18%) and Galaxy Digital. Where they ultimately land will decide whether Native Markets’ early momentum carries through to the September 14 deadline.

Native Markets is pitching a Hyperliquid-native stablecoin issued via Stripe’s Bridge infrastructure, promising yield-sharing to the Assistance Fund and HYPE buybacks.

But prominent voices, including Agora CEO Nick van Eck, warn that Stripe’s simultaneous push to launch its Tempo blockchain and its control of wallet provider Privy could create conflicts.

Despite those criticisms, some validators appear to view Stripe’s global payment rails as a compelling advantage.

What’s at stake is far more than just another token launch. Hyperliquid currently holds $5.5 billion in USDC deposits, around 7.5% of the stablecoin’s supply.

Replacing that with USDH would redirect hundreds of millions in annual Treasury yield. Paxos has pledged 95% of reserve earnings to HYPE buybacks, Frax promised 100% of yield directly to users, Agora offered 100% of net yield alongside institutional custodianship, and Sky (ex-MakerDAO) proposed 4.85% returns plus a $25 million “Hyperliquid Star” project to bootstrap DeFi on the chain.

Hyperliquid already commands nearly 80% of decentralized perpetuals trading. Whichever issuer wins the USDH contract won’t just be minting a stablecoin, they’ll be wiring themselves into the financial backbone of one of crypto’s fastest-growing exchanges.

Market Movement:

BTC: Currently trading at $114,053, up 2.6% in the past 24 hours and 2.1% over the past week, though still down 3.9% for the month. The move reflects a short-term rebound fueled by positive risk sentiment and steady demand, even as longer-term consolidation continues.

ETH: ETH is trading at $4,373.99, up 2%, as investors shrug off a mass-slashing event that penalized over 30 validators.

Gold: Gold held near $3,635 an ounce after Tuesday’s $3,674 peak as investors await U.S. inflation data that could shape Fed cuts, while ANZ raised its year-end gold target to $3,800 and sees a peak near $4,000 by June on strong investment demand and central-bank buying.

Nikkei 225: Asia-Pacific markets opened mixed Thursday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 up 0.23% and the Topix down 0.18%, after Wall Street hit record highs on Fed rate-cut hopes and upbeat inflation data.

S&P 500: The S&P 500 rose 0.3% to a record 6,532.04 Wednesday after an unexpected drop in wholesale prices bolstered hopes for a Fed rate cut next week.

Elsewhere in Crypto:

Ripple Expands Custody Solutions Across Europe in Latest Partnership, XRP Reacts

by admin September 11, 2025

Renowned Spanish banking firm BBVA has joined the long list of Ripple partners as institutional adoption continues to grow.

According to a recent report today, Ripple has extended its custodial footprint across the European banking industry after signing a new partnership with Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA).

With this partnership, Ripple has not only expanded its ecosystem and propelled XRP for further upsurge, it has also positioned BBVA’s customers for a secure and exclusive crypto trading experience.

Marking one of Ripple’s major partnerships focused on fostering its adoption among major institutions across the globe, the partnership deal will see BBVA integrate Ripple’s custody technology to support its retail crypto trading platform in Spain. With the help of Ripple, BBVA will now be able to offer its clients secure direct custody of Bitcoin and Ethereum.

What’s in for XRP?

With Ripple’s latest partnership coinciding with an epic shift in investors’ sentiments across the crypto market today, it has sparked reactions and stirred fresh debates among market participants.

Following Ripple’s latest partnership with the Spanish banking giant, the price of XRP was spotted registering a sharp upside movement, rebounding above key resistance levels. Hence, market watchers have expressed curiosity as to whether Ripple’s recent third-party engagement has garnered momentum for XRP, leading to the surge witnessed in its price today.

The debate appears to have remained unsettled as many believe that XRP had only surged in response to the broader market rally which saw other leading cryptocurrencies rebound back above previous highs.

You Might Also Like

However, other commentators have suggested that XRP’s positive price move was spurred by the development, as high-profile partnerships such as European banks further validate Ripple’s technological edge. This indirectly impacts XRP’s market performance, positioning it for long-term adoption among institutions.

While the debate about the relationship between Ripple’s custody solutions and XRP’s market potential has continued to linger, pro-crypto lawyer Bill Morgan has recently taken to X to clarify the connection between Ripple’s third-party collaborations and XRP’s market prospects.

The lawyer highlighted dismissing rumors that Ripple’s U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, RLUSD, plays the major role in external payments required for Ripple’s institutional engagements.

Morgan highlighted that the majority of Ripple payments involve the use of XRP, not RLUSD. While this can only mean higher demand for XRP among retailers and institutions, it highlights the major role key Ripple partnerships like this can play in XRP’s price dynamics.

Bitcoin Giant Strategy Dodges Another Lawsuit Alleging Accounting Wrongs

by admin September 10, 2025

In brief

  • A lawsuit against Bitcoin treasury Strategy has been scrapped.
  • Much like a different lawsuit dismissed in August, this one alleged shady accounting practices.
  • A number of lawsuits have been brought against Strategy this year, Decrypt previously reported.

Another shareholder lawsuit alleging dodgy accounting practices at Bitcoin treasury giant Strategy has been dropped, court documents show.

Documents filed Wednesday show the scrapped case, brought in June by shareholders Abhey Parmar and Zhenqiu Chen, had alleged breaches of fiduciary duties, unjust enrichment, abuse of control, and gross mismanagement in the company.

The dismissal comes just weeks after a different class-action lawsuit accusing the company of misleading shareholders about how new accounting rules would affect its profitability was scrapped. That lawsuit, filed in May, was similar to the June one dismissed Wednesday.

A number of law firms and stockholders this year filed lawsuits against the company, alleging securities fraud over misleading Bitcoin investment statements.

Experts told Decrypt that it wasn’t unusual for law firms to file identical lawsuits against a company, as they vied to become lead counsel in a consolidated case.

Strategy—formerly MicroStrategy—is the world’s biggest corporate holder of Bitcoin, with a stash of 638,460 digital coins worth $72.5 billion at today’s prices.

The company mainly used to sell data analysis software, but now buys and holds Bitcoin and lets investors buy shares of its Nasdaq-listed stock (MSTR) to get exposure to the cryptocurrency, dubbing itself a Bitcoin treasury firm.

Company co-founder Michael Saylor was turned on to Bitcoin in 2020, bought it, and claimed it was the best way to store value and save shareholders’ money.

Strategy stock has since soared. It was trading for $14 the day the company first bought Bitcoin in August 2020 and it’s now trading for $362—a 2,160% increase.

Strategy has in the past run into trouble with regulators. In 2000, Saylor, who was Strategy CEO at the time, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Sanjeev Bansal, and former Chief Financial Officer Mark Lynch settled a case with the SEC, without admitting or denying charges of overstating the company’s revenue and earnings.

The three paid $10 million in disgorgement and $1 million in penalties.

SwissBorg’s SOL Earn Wallet Exploited for $41.5M

by admin September 10, 2025

Welcome to The Protocol, CoinDesk’s weekly wrap of the most important stories in cryptocurrency tech development. I’m Margaux Nijkerk, a reporter at CoinDesk.

SWISSBORG’S SOL EARN WALLET EXPLOITED: Crypto exchange SwissBorg said about 192,600 SOL ($41.5 million) was stolen from an external wallet used exclusively for its SOL Earn strategy. The exploit stemmed from a partner’s compromised application programming interface (API), a mechanism that allows software systems to communicate with one another, affecting a single counterparty, the exchange said in a post on X. It was not a hack of the SwissBorg platform. The loss affected fewer than 1% of users and represented about 2% of SwissBorg’s total assets, the firm said. All other funds and strategies remain secure, and user balances within the SwissBorg app are unaffected. SOL Earn redemptions are paused while recovery efforts proceed. SwissBorg says it will cover any shortfall, ensuring no user losses. The company is working with white-hat hackers, security firms and law enforcement to recover the funds. A full incident report will follow once investigations conclude. This exploit arrives amid a sharp rise in crypto thefts, with over $2.17 billion already stolen in 2025. — Shaurya Malwa Read more.

LEDGER CTO WARNS OF PNM ATTACK: Charles Guillemet, the chief technology officer at hardware wallet maker Ledger, warned on X that a large-scale supply chain attack was underway after a reputable developer’s Node Package Manager (NPM) account was compromised. According to Guillemet, the malicious code — already pushed into packages with over 1 billion downloads — is designed to silently swap crypto wallet addresses in transactions. That means unsuspecting users could send funds directly to the attacker without realizing it. Guillemet did not name the developer whose account he said was compromised. The incident underscores how deeply interconnected open-source software is and why security lapses in developer tools can ripple into the crypto economy almost instantly. A day later, Guillemet shared that almost zero crypto users had been affected by the hack. “NPM is a tool commonly used in software development using JavaScript, which makes integrating packages easy for developers,” said Guillemet in a message to CoinDesk. When an attacker compromises a developer’s account, they can slip malicious code into widely used packages. “The malicious code attempts to drain users by swapping addresses used in transaction or general on-chain activity and replacing them with the hacker’s address,” Guillemet added. — Margaux Nijkerk Read more.

BACKPACK EU GOES LIVE FOLLOWING FTX EU ACQUISITION: Backpack Exchange, a global cryptocurrency trading platform, said its European division, Backpack EU, is officially live. Operating out of Cyprus and licensed under the European Union’s MiFID II framework, the exchange is positioning itself as one of the first fully regulated venues in Europe to offer crypto derivatives, starting with perpetual futures. “As far as I’m aware, it’s just going to be us and Kraken” in Europe offering perpetual futures, Armani Ferrante, the CEO of Backpack, said in an interview with CoinDesk. The debut follows Backpack’s acquisition of FTX EU earlier this year. In January, the FTX bankruptcy estate said the sale of FTX EU to Backpack was not authorized. Since then, the issue has been resolved and in April the exchange began distributing funds to former FTX EU customers, fulfilling their pledge to compensate users affected by the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s crypto empire. Backpack EU will provide users access to over 40 trading pairs with up to 10x leverage, the team said in a statement. The platform says it aims to give both retail and institutional traders a compliant gateway to advanced crypto trading products. The rollout also highlights Backpack’s broader strategy of rebuilding trust in digital assets following a string of exchange failures. — Margaux Nijkerk Read more.

POLYGON POS CHAIN EXPERIENCES FINALITY LAG: Polygon’s proof-of-stake chain is live, but transactions are taking longer than usual to lock in, with finality running 10–15 minutes behind schedule. Finality is the assurance that a transaction or piece of data is irreversible once confirmed and added to a block in the blockchain. The foundation said in an X post that a fix has been identified and is being rolled out to validators and service providers. The slowdown was tied to issues on some Bor/Erigon nodes and RPC providers, according to Polygon’s status page. Node restarts resolved the problem for many validators, while others had to rewind to the last finalized block before resyncing, a status page shared. The disruption comes weeks after Polygon’s Heimdall v2 upgrade promised 5-second finality through a modernized consensus stack. – Shaurya Malwa Read more.

The move affects 595 million unlocked WLFI tokens held on the address, worth roughly $107 million at current prices, according to Arkham data. The action followed the Sun-linked address making several outbound transactions of WLFI tokens on the Ethereum blockchain — including one for $9 million worth of the tokens — blockchain data shows. Sun, in a translated post on X, said that the “address only conducted a few generic exchange deposit tests, with very low amounts, and then created address dispersion, without involving any buying or selling, which could not possibly have any impact on the market.” In a later statement Sun urged the WLFI team to unblock his tokens. — Sam Reynolds Read more.

While Hines saw the conversion of Congress’ stablecoin effort into law and was able to attend the White House ceremony to cement it, he left shortly after, leaving a lengthy crypto to-do list for Witt.”There’s no drop off here,” said Witt, who was elevated to the job last month, just two weeks after the administration issued its wide-reaching strategy report for tackling U.S. crypto policy. “We’re keeping the pedal to the metal with all of the different initiatives on the legislative front and the interagency actions recommended in the report.” — Jesse Hamilton Read more.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has pushed back its decision on the XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF) proposal filed by American multinational investment management holding company Franklin Templeton.

The review of Cboe BZX’s proposal to list the aforementioned product has been extended to Nov. 14.

As reported by U.Today, Franklin Templeton, which boasts a total of $1.53 trillion worth of assets under management, originally filed to launch an XRP ETF in early March.

It remains the most prominent player to enter the closely watched XRP ETF race.

BlackRock, the world’s leading asset manager with $12.5 trillion worth of assets as of Q2 2025, is reportedly not considering filing for an XRP ETF. The same applies to a Solana-based ETF.

Current approval odds

As reported by U.Today, the odds of the SEC approving an XRP ETF in 2025 recently surged well above 90% on the Polymarket betting website. At press time, the odds currently stand at 92%.

Bloomberg analysts previously stated that the approval of spot altcoin ETFs would likely come this October.
