NYT Connections today (game #805) – the answers

The answers to today’s Connections, game #805, are…

  • YELLOW: WINE VESSELS BOTTLE, CARAFE, DECANTER, GLASS
  • GREEN: RIPPED CLEFT, RENT, SPLIT, TORN
  • BLUE: KINDS OF SNAKES CORAL, GARTER, KING, RATTLE
  • PURPLE: ____ CALL BOOTY, CLOSE, COLD, CURTAIN
  • My rating: Hard
  • My score: 3 mistakes

After an easy game yesterday, I was expecting a more cryptic round today – and so it proved. WINE VESSELS was easy enough to get, but the rest of today’s Connections was really difficult.

I was pleased when I managed to finally get KINDS OF SNAKES, but it took me three tries before I finally achieved it. I was pretty sure about the category and had RATTLE, KING and CORAL locked down, but was clueless about the fourth.

I didn’t really know what I was looking for with the last two groups, but thinking that SPLIT, CLEFT and TORN must belong together, I tried CURTAIN first before swapping in RENT for no reason other than a blind guess.

Yesterday’s NYT Connections answers (Saturday, August 23, game #804)

  • YELLOW: U.S. PRESIDENTS ADAMS, FORD, GRANT, WASHINGTON
  • GREEN: ACTORS WHOSE LAST NAMES ARE ALSO VERBS CHEVY CHASE, CHRISTOPH WALTZ, GEOFFREY RUSH, TOM CRUISE
  • BLUE: KINDS OF POKER DRAW, OMAHA, STRIP, STUD
  • PURPLE: PROPER NOUNS AFTER GERUNDS IN ’90S MOVIE TITLES AMY, JOHN MALKOVICH, LAS VEGAS, PRIVATE RYAN

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don’t technically need to solve the final one, as you’ll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It’s a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It’s playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Microsoft launches Copilot AI function in Excel, but warns not to use it in ‘any task requiring accuracy or reproducibility’

by admin August 23, 2025

Certain Windows 365 Copilot users now have access to a new feature in Excel that lets you use Microsoft’s Copilot AI to generate formulas, but you might want to be careful how you use it. Microsoft is already warning users that the AI might not always be accurate.

The new “COPILOT” function allows you to skip writing Excel formulas yourself by telling Copilot what you want to do and the cells you want to use. For instance, you could type in “=COPILOT(“Summarize this feedback”, A2:A20)” to have Copilot generate a formula that summarizes the content in a column of cells. The examples Microsoft suggests in the support page for the COPILOT function focus on classifying, summarizing, and generating content.

However, Microsoft specifically warns not to use it for “any task requiring accuracy or reproducibility,” like numerical calculations. Microsoft also advises against using the feature for “financial reporting, legal documents, or other high-stakes scenarios,” so basically most of the things people turn to Excel for.

Related articles

Much like with other generative AI tools, if you’re using the COPILOT function, you need to keep an eye out for the AI hallucinating strange results or misunderstanding your prompts, which of course calls its basic utility into question.

Aside from accuracy, privacy is also an obvious concern here. Microsoft says in the announcement blog post that “Your data sent through the COPILOT function is never used to train or improve the AI models. The information you input remains confidential and is used solely to generate your requested output.”

This is still a beta feature, so Microsoft is still refining it with the help of user feedback and it isn’t widely available yet. Right now, it’s only available to Microsoft 365 Copilot Beta Channel users. Functionality is also somewhat limited even beyond the accuracy concerns—the COPILOT function is currently maxed out at 100 calls per 10 minutes or 300 calls per hour. It can’t access “live web data or internal business documents,” either.

Kumail Nanjiani Reveals His ‘Eternals’ Future That Could’ve Been

by admin August 23, 2025

It’s no secret the MCU entered the 2020s with some growing pains. A pandemic will do that to you, ditto a spottier output, and one of the more divisive projects was Eternals. At the time, it seemed Marvel had some plans for the immortal beings, and thanks to Kumail Nanjiani, we now know what that would’ve looked like.

In a recent episode of Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out podcast, the one-time Kingo revealed he signed on thinking he’d be a longterm MCU player and alternate between that and non-blockbuster work. According to him, Marvel Studios had him sign up “for all this stuff. I signed on for six movies, a video game, [and] a theme park ride. I was like, ‘This is gonna be my job for the next 10 years.’” Those plans, which likely also applied to costars like Angelina Jolie and Brian Tyree Henry (and is probably standard across all MCU actors), appear to have fallen through, since the Eternals have been MIA for nearly four years and Marvel’s not said much about them since. And the only other time they’ve been brought up was a season three episode of What If…? that saw Nanjiani voice an alternate version of Kingo.

Breaking down the different parts of Nanjiani’s statement, his mention of six films likely applies to at least two Eternals sequels and three guest appearances in other characters’ movies. The theme park ride probably relates to his likeness, and the video game is a little trickier to determine. Nanjiani’s done voice work for video games before, so it could be he would’ve played Kingo across one of Marvel’s mobile titles like Strike Force, or even Fortnite, since both have seen Ryan Reynolds reprise his role as Deadpool. (Hell, if you wanna really get out there, maybe they thought he’d be such a fan-favorite to land a spot in Marvel Rivals.)

Regardless, Nanjiani still has pride in Eternals, even while acknowledging its “really bad reviews” affected him so much he went to therapy, where he realized “too much of my self-esteem was tied up in other people’s reaction to my work.” Given Marvel’s recent moves in the past year, though, maybe the studio will bring Kingo and his fellow Eternals back for something in the next few years.

How to Watch ‘Unforgotten’: Stream Season 6 Anywhere for Free

by admin August 23, 2025

See at PBS

Showing Unforgotten season 6 in the US

PBS

ITV/PBS

Binge-worthy British crime drama Unforgotten returns to US TV screens this month, with Sinéad Keenan and Sanjeev Bhaskar resuming their roles as veteran detectives Jessica James and Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan in what has been described as the show’s most grisly season yet.

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch Unforgotten, wherever you are in the world, and how to use a VPN if it’s not available where live.

The new season brings a whole new cold case for the duo to investigate with the discovery of a human spine in the wetlands of east London.

That find draws in a new set of suspects for James and Khan to grill, with an outspoken TV commentator, a college professor, an Afghan immigrant, a college professor and a young autistic man all drawing suspicion.

Here’s how you can watch season 6 of Unforgotten from anywhere in the world.

‘Unforgotten’ Season 6 premiere dates

Comprised of six episodes, season 6 of Unforgotten premieres in the US on Aug. 24 at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT on PBS, the PBS app and the PBS Masterpiece Channel, with new episodes set to air weekly. The show is an ITV production, and was aired in the UK at the start of 2025, with all episodes currently available to watch on demand in the region via ITVX.

Stream ‘Unforgotten’ season 6 for free in the US

Season 6 of Unforgotten can be watched for free in the US on the PBS Masterpiece Channel and the PBS app.

In most markets, PBS channels can also be accessed via live TV streaming services, including YouTube TV, DirecTV Stream and Hulu Plus Live TV, and Amazon Prime Video.

PBS

General streaming is available in the US only for 14 days after each episode premieres, but if you’re a PBS Passport member you can watch Unforgotten season 6 episodes outside of that window.

A PBS Passport member benefit requires a station donation of $5 per month and gives extended access to on-demand shows, full seasons, and archives.

How to watch ‘Unforgotten’ season 6 from anywhere with a VPN

If you’re traveling abroad and want to keep up with your favorite shows while away from home, a VPN can help enhance your privacy and security when streaming. It encrypts your traffic and prevents your internet service provider from throttling your speeds, and can also be helpful when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks while traveling, adding an extra layer of protection for your devices and logins.

VPNs are legal in many countries, including the US and Canada, and can be used for legitimate purposes such as improving online privacy and security. However, some streaming services may have policies restricting VPN usage to access region-specific content. If you’re considering a VPN for streaming, check the platform’s terms of service to ensure compliance.

If you choose to use a VPN, follow the provider’s installation instructions, ensuring you’re connected securely and in compliance with applicable laws and service agreements. Some streaming platforms may block access when a VPN is detected, so verifying if your streaming subscription allows VPN usage is crucial.

Looking for other options? Be sure to check out some of the other great VPN deals taking place right now.

Sarah Tew/CNET

ExpressVPN is our current best VPN pick for people who want a reliable and safe VPN and it works on a variety of devices. It’s normally $13 a month but if you sign up for an annual subscription for $100 you’ll get three months free and save 49%. That’s the equivalent of $6.67 a month.

Note that ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Stream ‘Unforgotten’ for free in the UK

As mentioned above, season 6 of the crime drama aired in the UK back in February.

That means all episodes — alongside the five previous seasons — are available to watch on demand for free via ITV’s streaming service ITVX.

ITV

If you’re in the UK, you can watch Unforgotten on the network’s streaming service ITVX, which is free to use if you create an account. For more info on how to watch ITVX from anywhere with a VPN, keep reading.

Quick tips for streaming ‘Unforgotten’ using a VPN

  • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming may vary.
  • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
  • If you’re having trouble getting the show after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
  • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
  • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

Best Hair Dryer: Rigorous Testing in Real Apartments (2025)

by admin August 23, 2025

Compare Top 7 Hair Dryers

More Hair Dryers to Consider

Photograph: Amazon; Getty Images

Hot Tools Pro Artist Quietair for $135: The Hot Tools Pro Artist Quietair is certified by Quiet Mark, an independent organization that assesses how much noise pollution household products produce. While the price is technically $120, it’s almost always discounted to around $60 on Amazon, so you don’t have to splurge. The reduction of sound isn’t a reduction of capability. The high-speed setting will blow the dryer right off your counter if you set it down. It has three heat settings and two speed settings, plus a cool shot button.

Hairitage Comin’ Hot Dryer for $40: Hairitage’s Comin’ in Hot Hair Dryer is compact at 1.6 pounds and costs just $40. The basics are covered: two speeds, three heat settings, and a cool shot button. It only comes with an air concentrator nozzle, but you can purchase a separate diffuser for curls and a comb attachment. The add-ons are frequently out of stock, though, sometimes for months at a time.

Panasonic Nanoe Hair Dryer for $135: This dryer comes with a concentrator nozzle and diffuser attachment in addition to its removable oscillating head that mimics the back-and-forth motion you make with your hand. There are three heat settings and two speed settings, which is the minimum standard. Panasonic also claims the dryer uses electrostatic shock to disperse water molecules into tinier nano-sized particles, which might reduce hair damage. Former WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano tested the compact version for $100, which she says makes for a great travel hair dryer.

Gama iQ2 Perfetto for $330: The iQ2 includes an auto-clean function to automatically turn off should it overheat (it did not do this in testing, thankfully). There’s a setting lock so you can dry your hair without accidentally changing the speed or heat. Plus, it comes with a silicone thermal mat that puts the dryer into standby mode when you place it down, turning it back on when you pick it up. This is helpful if you’re sectioning off strands and frequently have to put the dryer down. But it’s expensive, and the microperforated magnetic mesh filter cover tends to fall off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Ionic Hair Dryer Better Than a Ceramic One?

AccordionItemContainerButton

Ionic hair dryers release ions that break down water molecules, which expedites drying time and reduces frizz. They’re suitable for all hair types, but they’re especially better for thick and/or curly hair. Ceramic dryers are meant to distribute heat evenly, which is supposed to reduce heat damage. Again, suitable for all hair types, but especially those with fine hair.

What Features Should I Look for in a High-Quality Hair Dryer?

AccordionItemContainerButton

Wattage: The power of a dryer is mainly dictated by its wattage, typically ranging from 800 to 2,000 watts. Higher wattage means faster drying times and more heat, but it can also mean a heavier dryer and higher energy consumption.

Weight: A lightweight dryer can make a big difference, especially if you’re styling your hair daily. It reduces hand strain and provides better maneuverability, making the drying process more comfortable.

Heat and speed settings: These settings determine both the temperature and airflow of your dryer. More adjustable options allow you to personalize your experience and exercise greater control over your hair. I find a cool shot button or setting a must for locking in my hairdo because I rarely use hairspray.

Attachments: Choose one that comes with useful attachments, such as concentrator nozzles or diffusers, depending on your hair type and texture.

How to Fix Heat-Damaged Hair?

AccordionItemContainerButton

Disclaimer: You may need to speak to a hairstylist, especially if your hair was chemically treated.

A hair mask or deep-conditioning treatment may be the first step to restore your hair’s natural proteins and seal in moisture. Your hairstylist may also recommend a haircut to trim the broken ends.

Finally, protect your hair from further damage. Use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying. The Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer is our favorite, but we also love the R+Co Hot Spell Thermotech Blow Out Balm for curly or thick hair. For more recommendations, check out our guide to the Best Heat Protectant Sprays. Get a quality hair towel to avoid frizz and breakage. A regular body towel is too rough on hair, especially fragile curls. A plain old cotton T-shirt works great for drying, and you likely have one in your closet that you no longer wear. You’ll find specific hair towels anywhere you shop for hair products, but former WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano recommends TO112’s Bamboo Wrap ($39).

AccordionItemContainerButton

We test on a variety of hair types, lengths, and textures. This includes but isn’t limited to fine, straight, thick, curly, and color-treated hair. Our testers live in different climates—sticky cities like New York, temperature swings in Chicago, wet conditions in Portland—so we’re also able to evaluate how these hair dryers handle frizz, static, and shine.

We assess weight, cord length, and dual-voltage compatibility for frequent travelers. Each model is timed on freshly washed hair, evaluated for drying time, heat output, and airflow strength. We also test attachments and accessories for ease of use, durability, and styling results.

Lastly, we conduct long-term testing, using each dryer for months to check for motor wear, filter maintenance, and any overall performance loss.

What Are We Testing Next?

Get half off subscriptions for Labor Day

If you want to brush up on some skills or learn new ones, MasterClass offers a good way to do just that. The streaming service has hundreds of classes taught by professionals and experts in their fields, and now you can get a subscription for 50 percent less than usual. All MasterClass membership tiers are on sale right now, so you can sign up for as low as $5 per month.

With a subscription, you could watch a class on writing taught by James Patterson, or learn cooking techniques from Thomas Keller. If you’re trying to impress at your next pickup basketball game you could learn about shooting, ball-handling and scoring from Steph Curry. Each class includes around 20 video lessons that run about 10 minutes long on average, as well as an in-depth workbook.

MasterClass

A MasterClass subscription is 50 percent off during this Labor Day sale.

$96 at MasterClass

MasterClass has also begun producing some original series for its platform. The series Business Rebels features different CEOs walking viewers through the strategies that helped them disrupt their industries. One entitled Skin Health features top dermatologists and a cosmetic chemist walking viewers through keeping their skin healthy through cleansing routines and specific beauty products.

The wide range of skills or life lessons you could learn through these classes is why MasterClass is on our list of best subscriptions you can give as gifts. Maybe your loved one who loves to host dinner parties could use some tips from Gordon Ramsay.

There are three subscription tiers for MasterClass that each differ only in how many devices they allow at one time, and whether offline videos are supported. The Standard subscription only supports one device, whereas the Plus subscription allows two. These are normally $10 and $15 per month, respectively, and neither offers offline mode. The Premium tier, which carries a regular price of $20 per month, allows up to six devices and features offline mode for downloaded classes.

All three tiers are part of the 50 percent off sale, which marks them down to $5, $8 and $10 respectively. MasterClass bills annually, so be sure to calculate the total from the “monthly” price before deciding.

Bose’s compact TV Speaker is more than $100 off right now

by admin August 23, 2025

If you’re looking to upgrade your movie night, a soundbar is an easy way to beef up the audio. While there are some high-priced options out there, you don’t have to spend a lot to actually hear a movie’s dialog. Right now, the Bose TV Speaker is down to $163.45 (about $115 off) at Amazon, the lowest price we’ve seen yet.

The Bose TV Speaker is a solid starter soundbar that can easily integrate into existing setups with a simple one-cable connection (via optical or HDMI). At under 24 inches wide and around two inches tall, the soundbar features a small footprint, yet it delivers a rich, immersive sound thanks to its three-speaker setup. For more bass, you can press the “Bass” button on the remote, while a dedicated dialogue mode further elevates what people are saying, allowing you to finally turn off the subtitles.

Additionally, the Bose TV Speaker has Bluetooth connectivity, so you can use the soundbar to listen to music or podcasts. While it lacks more premium features like Dolby Atmos, Bose offers some of our favorite noise-cancelling headphones and earbuds, so you can expect a similar level of quality in its home audio products.

Bournemouth 1-0 Wolves: The home side dominated the early parts of the game, grabbing the lead through Tavernier early on. Wolves managed to regain a bit of grip in midfield after about 30 minutes and created a few chances from wide. Both teams go in knowing the game is still up for grabs.

Brentford 1-0 Aston Villa: Perhaps against most people’s predictions for this one, it’s the home side who go in on top at half time. Debutant Ouattara scored for the Bee’s as they also had a late goal in the half ruled out for a foul in the build up. Unai Emery will have to rally his team up at half time if he wants to leave with some points.

Burnley 0-0 Sunderland: It’s stalemate at Turf Moor going into half-time. The hosts had a goal ruled out after VAR review in the 18th minute but the game has been very close in the first half, both teams having three shots each as they share possession 49% to 51%. All is still to play for.

All three games have witnessed an enforced change as Sunderland’s Daniel Ballard came off for Jenson Seelt, Aston Villa’s Boubacar Kamara came off for Emi Buendia and Wolves’ Ki-Jana Hoever came off for debutant Jackson Tchatchoua.

Expect a big second half across all three games as they’re all still wide open and don’t forget that if you’re travelling away from home you can use a VPN to access your usual coverage.

Another early substitution 16′

There’s another early substitution in this afternoon’s fixtures but this time it’s Aston Villa who are forced to make a change. Kamara comes off for Villa for Buendia who will presumably play in attacking midfield with Tielemens dropping into the midfield pivot.

Match Preview: Burnley vs Sunderland

(Image credit: Getty Images- Lewis Storey)

Two of the newly promoted teams face off early on in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign in what’s set to be a thriller.

Scott Parker’s Burnley host The Black Cats at Turf Moor after The Clarets were thumped 3-0 by Tottenham in gameweek 1, although the game was closer than the score suggests. Last year in the Championship, Burnley held an impressive defensive record, only conceding 18 goals in 48 matches. However, a crucial piece in that puzzle was goalkeeper James Trafford who departed for his boyhood club Manchester City this summer.

On the bright side, Burnley are unbeaten in their three Premier League home games against Sunderland, most recently a 4-1 victory in December 2018.

Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland enjoyed a marvellous return to the Premier League, beating West Ham 3-0 with goals from Mayenda, Ballard and Isidor. The Black Cats will be looking to pounce at the chance to extend their winning form against a dejected Burnley team.

After a summer spending spree, new boys Sunderland racked up a transfer bill of over £132 million and will be confident that their new new look side has the tools to dismantle Burnley.

In Ukraine, Setanta Sports are showing the games for JUST $2.63.

Match Preview: Brentford vs Aston Villa

(Image credit: Getty Images- Harry Murphy)

The Bee’s started their 2025-26 EPL campaign with a disappointing 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest, with a consolation goal from striker Igor Thiago from the penalty spot. The departure of key players such as Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard as well as manager Thomas Frank has proven to be difficult to deal with for Brentford. With ace, Yoane Wissa, also looking likely to depart for greener pastures, Brentford look on course for a difficult season under rookie manager Keith Andrews.

However, Andrew’s men will be looking for a positive result in front of their home fans for the first time this season, looking to overcome their six game winless streak against Villa in the League.

Unai Emery’s men come into this game after a stalemate vs Newcastle in their league opener. The lack of shots the Villans produced against Newcastle could be cause for concern for Emery but they have won in their last two visits to the Gtech and have scored in all eight of their Premier League meetings.

The big news is that goalkeeper Emi Martinez returns to the starting XI for Villa. However they are without Ezri Konsa as he’s suspended following a red card against Newcastle. Emery will have to adjust his defensive set up going into this battle, with both Mings and Torres looking to start at CB as they look to add to their impressive against a struggling Brentford.

Match Preview: Bournemouth vs Wolves

(Image credit: Getty Images- Michael Steele)

Andori Iraola’s Bournemouth welcome Vitor Pereria’s Wolves to the Vitality stadium for this Premier League clash. Bournemouth showed a good account of themselves against Premier League champions, Liverpool, in gameweek 1 of the 2025-26 EPL season, losing 4-2 in an end-to-end thriller.

Riddled with summer departures, with key players such as Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi leaving for Real Madrid and PSG respectively and Milos Kerkez joining Liverpool, it’s more or less a new look back line for the Cherries as they’ll look to get their first three points of the season.

However, Bournemouth have managed to keep hold of star player, Antoine Semenyo, who dazzled against Liverpool. Bournemouth fans will be hoping the Ghanaian can lead them to victory against Wolves, who they have beaten three times in their last five Premier League meetings.

A similar summer of goodbyes took place in Wolverhampton as well, as Vitor Pereira lost talisman Matheus Cunha to Manchester United and left back Rayan Ait-Nouri to their Manchester rivals, the Citizens.

Wolves’ start to the 2025-26 Premier League campaign was one to forget as Ait-Nouri came back to haunt his former club as Manchester City shipped four passed Wolves with no reply. Pereira will be looking for a big response from his team as they look to bounce back from a harrowing opening day defeat. Wolves are unbeaten in five games at the Vitality stadium which should put them in good stead going into this game but their defensive fragilities shown in gameweek 1 may come to blossom once again if they can’t handle the pace of Bournemouth’s front line.

Australian fans can watch on Stan Sport from 3PM (BST)/ 12AM ACT

Here’s Why Crypto Set the Market on Fire Yesterday

by admin August 23, 2025

Cryptocurrency markets skyrocketed into new territory Friday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled that interest rate reductions could be imminent, pushing the Dow to its first 800-point plus gain this year. That ended the Dow’s longest streak without a new high since Dec. 4, 2024, according to Dow Jones Market Data, and signaled a major surge of optimism at the prospect of some economic policy relief.

Cryptos were major stars of that rally.

Ethereum (ETH) climbed over 15% to reach a new all-time high of $4,885, surpassing its previous record from November 2021, while Solana (SOL) swung between 8% and 12.5% in a 24-hour period, nudging just past the longtime “psychological” mark of $200 for a high of $201.94. Bitcoin (BTC) lovers also had their moment when it climbed 2.5% to $114,700 from $112,000, clawing back some of its losses from earlier this week.

As cryptocurrencies and stocks soared, the probability of a September Fed rate cut jumped to 90% following the speech, Reuters reports.

So why all the enthusiasm?

Simply put: When the market feels more secure, it invests in places considered riskier bets. Cryptocurrencies and other fintechs that are part of emerging technology sit squarely in those crosshairs.

This time it appears institutional investors led the charge, as they look for investments that can balance out a shaky U.S. dollar, general volatility, and risk.

“It’s almost a relief rally,” Carol Schleif, chief market strategist at BMO Private Wealth, told the Wall Street Journal. “Markets had anticipated more angst.”

The optimism from the market is a sign monetary easing is a reversal of that angst, and could be a change in fortune for the sector, which has whipsawed in recent trading, said Steve Lee, co-founder and managing partner at Neoclassic Capital and investor in BlockTower Capital.

“I see this as constructive in the short term, and it may help reverse this week’s sell-off. The key question is whether this momentum holds beyond the low-liquidity weekend. Since BTC and ETH price action is increasingly institutionally driven, spot ETF flows today and Monday will be a strong indicator of whether we are set for another leg higher,” Lee told CoinDesk.

What did Powell say?

As usual, Powell got straight to the point during his Wyoming speech on Friday.

“Downside risks to employment are rising,” Powell said at the Jackson Hole Symposium. “And if those risks materialize, they can do so quickly in the form of sharply higher layoffs and rising unemployment.”

Powell also said recent policy moves from the Trump administration could affect inflation.

“With policy in restrictive territory, the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance,” he said, adding that tariffs could push inflation higher, at least temporarily. “A reasonable base case is that the effects will be relatively short lived, a one-time shift in the price level.”

You can read Powell’s entire speech here.

So how high did we go?

In this rally’s case, a rising tide did indeed lift all boats.

The broader S&P 500 also saw strong gains, rising 1.5%, its best performance since May, and equities were a bright spot on the NASDAQ Composite, which advanced 1.9%.

But perhaps most importantly, the index used by Wall Street to gauge how frightened investors might be, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), dipped more than 14% to its lowest level this year. The VIX is a favorite of trading pros and shows how turbulent the market feels.

Those gains across the board are an encouraging sign for both the buyside and the sellside, experts said.

“Correlations between cryptos and equities are high, and we see a market mood that will be highly sensitive to this week’s comments from the Jackson Hole meeting of monetary authorities, as well as from any reactions from fiscal authorities,” wrote Manuel Villegas, an analyst at Julius Baer, in a research note.

Which crypto continue to rise?

While nothing is a given once the opening bell rings, some analysts are already predicting which companies they think will continue to do well.

Analysts at Monarq Asset Management told CoinDesk that there’s still more room for Ethereum to grow, and that they expect to see the coin top $5,000 in near-term trade.

“We maintain our overall bullish stance. Market internals remain constructive, with few signs of overheating and, as you point out, a clear path to new all-time highs in both BTC and ETH,” Sam Gaer, chief investment officer of Monarq Asset Management’s Directional Fund, told CoinDesk.

“Our house view is that Powell’s dovish pivot has cleared the way for $5,000+ in the near term, also not the hardest call to make,” Gaer said. “Demand from treasury vehicles should increase into the fall as many of the deals announced this summer close or de-SPAC, in addition to ongoing institutional and retail inflows.”

Will Powell lower rates?

Friday’s rally was a perfect example of how sensitive global markets are to Fed policy, particularly after a long period of no rate cuts. Analysts, traders, and every other player in finance have been attempting to read Powell’s tea leaves for years with only moderate success, and even a major rally like Friday’s can’t completely fortify a very fragile market.

While no one can be entirely certain what Powell and the Fed will do next week, market watchers across the board are bullish on the move. “The Fed isn’t going to be the party-pooper,” Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management, told the WSJ.

How much that rate cut might matter in the long run remains to be seen.

“We’re still doubtful that a September cut points to a prolonged interest rate cutting cycle. Risks to inflation are real and coming from many angles,” Lauren Goodwin, economist and chief market strategist at New York Life Investments, wrote in a Friday note.

With Apple’s Siri AI Overhaul Delayed, Google Might Help It Catch Up

by admin August 23, 2025

Apple is reportedly weighing up a potentially major change to its digital assistant: powering a revamped Siri with Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence tool.

According to Bloomberg, the companies are in early discussions about a partnership that could reshape Apple’s AI strategy for the iPhone, iPad and Apple’s other products. While no agreement is in place, the talks signal Apple’s growing urgency to keep up in the generative AI race.

Siri, once a pioneer, has lagged behind its voice assistant rivals. Apple had planned to roll out a smarter, AI-driven Siri in 2025 as part of its Apple Intelligence initiative, but executives delayed the launch until spring 2026, admitting the early version wasn’t reliable enough to ship. That setback has left Apple at a disadvantage while Samsung, Microsoft and Amazon push ahead with AI assistants that are more conversational and capable.

Apple has long prided itself on controlling the technologies that make its products distinct, but generative AI has proven harder to master internally. To bridge the gap, Apple has leaned on partners: today’s Siri can already route certain requests to OpenAI’s ChatGPT when its own models fall short, and later this year, Apple Intelligence is set to upgrade that integration with GPT-5. You’ll be able to call on ChatGPT for writing help, image understanding and complex questions directly through Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence.

That reliance underscores the fact that Apple’s own models aren’t yet competitive at the same scale as its rivals.

Apple is reportedly exploring additional options, including Anthropic’s Claude and, most prominently, Google’s Gemini. A deal with Google wouldn’t just inject advanced capabilities into Siri, it would echo a long-running partnership between the two companies. Google already pays billions annually to remain the default search engine on Safari, and a Gemini deal could extend that relationship into Apple’s core AI experience.

If the talks advance, we may see a very different Siri emerge in the coming years: one less constrained, more conversational and powered by the same AI that underpins Google’s own products.

Apple and Google didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

(Disclosure: Ziff Davis, CNET’s parent company, in April filed a lawsuit against ChatGPT maker OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.)
