AI's rise to the C-suite: how algorithms earned a seat at the table

Artificial intelligence has become a back-office powerhouse and essential resource for sifting through data, optimizing processes, and automating the repetitive. But as AI tools become more accessible, they are no longer just crunching numbers behind the scenes. Executives are increasingly turning to these platforms as a trusted advisor for providing strategic insight and informing business decisions.

Our recent survey found that nearly three-quarters (74%) of executives trust AI’s input over that of friends or colleagues. Even more striking, 44% said they would allow generative AI to override a decision they had already planned to make. These findings mark a profound shift in how leadership decisions are made.

Traditionally, executives have relied on a blend of data, gut instinct, and conversations with trusted advisors. Now, AI is earning a spot in the inner circle, signaling a fundamental redefinition of how leaders pair human insight with machine intelligence to drive better outcomes.

AI as Strategic Co-Pilot

As companies prepare for an AI-focused future, business operations are being rewritten. Companies in every industry are looking for ways to incorporate AI that can help them build even the smallest competitive advantage. As a result, AI is taking on a new role as the C-suite’s strategic copilot, handling tasks like data analysis and recommendations (52%), uncovering hidden risks (48%) and presenting alternate strategic paths (47%).

AI is helping leaders go deeper—to challenge assumptions, test new scenarios, and make more informed decisions about how their business operates. But even in everyday life, AI is finding valuable and exciting uses, with some guardrails.

I’ve used it to help plan family vacations and generate personalized bedtime stories for my children. While it struggles to manage complex scheduling (and the nuances of how I manage my calendar), AI has transformed how I approach and solve many problems, offering a helpful sounding board for tasks in both my personal and professional life.

SAP CEO Christian Klein recently shared that he uses generative AI to preview quarterly earnings results and better understand company performance.

AI’s influence extends to other roles in the C-suite as well, from automated anomaly detection in financial transactions for CFOs, to streamlining contract reviews and generation of new contracts for CPOs, to COOs needing to evaluate capacity planning and manage variability in market demand.

And, of course, there is always the most common use case of all – summarizing complex documents and topics, and generating subsequent action items.

We’re far from alone. More leaders are beginning to incorporate AI into the highest levels of planning and forecasting.

Critical Thinking and the Human Touch

As AI’s influence in the boardroom grows, so does the trust leaders place in it. Part of this stems from AI’s growing ability to analyze massive volumes of data and provide contextually rich insights. In some situations, AI is usurping the guidance of near and dear advisors as previously mentioned. A trusted colleague might offer valuable perspective, but they haven’t parsed two billion data points before weighing in.

Still, there are limits. While executives should continue to use AI to help with business matters, there’s a risk that critical thinking will be lost rather than enhanced as a result. True strategic decision-making will always require a human touch—which AI can’t replicate.

Going forward, executives must strike a careful balance, keeping people involved to help make complicated and high-value strategic decisions, while using AI to enhance their thinking, not replace it.

Building a Foundation for Strategic AI Use

Such heightened reliance on AI will also force organizations to grapple with foundational challenges. The reality is that many companies still lack the reliable data infrastructure needed to support high-trust AI use. Lack of alignment between IT and business teams, patchy system integration and concerns about data quality all threaten to undermine the effectiveness of AI as a strategic advisor.

Companies must establish clear guardrails, like those below, to ensure these tools are used reliably and responsibly, balancing speed and scale with transparency and human input.

  • Develop AI literacy across leadership through dedicated training and upskilling programs.
  • Prioritize transparency by using platforms that can explain their reasoning in clear, understandable terms.
  • Define boundaries for where and how AI should influence decision-making, particularly in ethically sensitive or high-risk areas.

Co-Creation: The Future of Leadership

As AI becomes a true collaborator in the boardroom, the goal isn’t to hand over control. It’s to elevate leadership. In this new era, great leaders won’t always have the right answer, but they will know when and how to ask the right questions—and where to turn for the best insights.

Going forward, we see leadership evolving from command-and-control to co-creation. Those who thrive will be the ones who understand how to blend human experience, emotional intelligence, and machine-derived insight into a cohesive and future-first strategy.

With AI as a loyal advisor, the possibilities for transformative leadership are just beginning.

The best way to wait for Battlefield 6 is to finally play Battlefield 5, an underappreciated gem

Last week: Got all sappy about the server browser and got very close to downloading Quake.

The Battlefield 6 beta got its hooks into me and my friend group in a way few shooters can, and I know that because we’re spending the 46-day wait for its release by playing other Battlefields. The natural first choice was Battlefield 2042, as it has a new event with unlockable Battlefield 6 skins, but surprisingly, we’ve gravitated toward a game that most of us completely ignored at the time: Battlefield 5.

PC Gamer liked Battlefield 5 when it came out in 2018, but there were plenty of reasons it got the cold shoulder from the wider FPS community. DICE’s ugly Battlefront 2 loot box fiasco was still fresh. Plus, battle royales were the new hotness, and the explosive popularity of free-to-play Fortnite was making full-priced multiplayer games look old-fashioned. And generally, the genre was tending toward sweaty competition over casual chaos—my most-played shooters at the time were Rainbow Six Siege and Overwatch.

I owe Battlefield 5 an apology, because it’s really good. I picked it up on sale a few years ago, but I’m only now appreciating its weird guns, smart class choices, and absurdly pretty maps. Thousands of people still play it on Steam every day, and the Battlefield 6 hype has triggered a new surge (its 24-hour Steam concurrent peak was over 12,000 yesterday). It’s not on sale right now, but if you’re interested, it’s on PC Game Pass.

Spotting

Easily Battlefield 5’s most controversial change to series norms is a huge nerf to spotting. Instead of pressing Q to place a tracking diamond on moving enemies, spotting is an imprecise ping by default. There are some ways to live ping enemies with gadgets, but the only class with a traditional spotting tool is the Recon’s spotter scope. The result is way fewer red diamond symbols telling on each other, but spotting is still a factor.

It’s wild how differently Battlefield plays when stealth is actually viable. Smokescreens can meaningfully blind enemy squads long enough to get a few revives in, and vehicles can even sneak up on you if you’re not watching the minimap. This iteration of spotting feels fairer and more intentional than in BF2042 or the Battlefield 6 beta. I’m a total convert.

Bandages & ammo

To encourage teammates to lean on each other, Battlefield 5 placed hard limits on ammo and healing. Automatic healing takes longer to kick in than usual, but everyone spawns with one bandage that can self-heal quickly. The catch is that you can only get another bandage by finding a medic or a supply station.

Ammo reserves are also smaller, but in turn, both Support and Medics can now toss bandages/ammo packs to individuals from a long distance. It’s a really cool way to make the ammo jockey a more active and consistently useful role—we’ve all had teammates who never seem to use ammo and health stations dropped on the ground, so the automatically accurate toss can be a lifesaver.

Battlefield 2042 ditched the bandage system, but the tossable pouches eventually made their return as a secondary gadget—they’d fit right into Battlefield 6, too.

Classes

Unlike BF2042 and BF6 by default, Battlefield 5 has class-locked weapons (hurray). I like that each class has a clearly defined role, but Battlefield 5 is also a great example of allowing some gun overlap where it makes sense. Medics, for instance, are SMG specialists, but they also have access to a few bolt-action carbines for when close-range isn’t cutting it. That said, Assaults can feel dominant with the double whammy of overwhelming assault rifles and anti-armor RPGs.

The odd class out this time is the Support, whose gadget pool of repair tools, mines, and ammo boxes isn’t terribly exciting. What is exciting are heavy machine guns: they’re exclusive to Support and among the deadliest guns in the game, but interestingly, they’re inaccurate unless you mount their bipod on a wall or the floor.

You basically become a glass tank—locking down entire zones with a laser beam that can melt squads in seconds, checked by the very real danger of being still while doing it. It’s the best modern example of a class weapon having a major influence on its playstyle, so it’s a shame that DICE is favoring a Call of Duty-style free-for-all in Battlefield 6.

The Pacific maps

Back in 2019, Battlefield 5’s final major update added a new faction, several new guns, vehicles, and a handful of Pacific theatre maps inspired by Battlefield 1942. With their own playlist that’s still active, they’re the highlight of the whole package, and all the proof I need that nothing captures the complete Battlefield experience (infantry, boats, jeeps, tanks, and planes) quite like Wake Island. The only thing it’s missing is helicopters.

The server browser

If you want to play a specific map or mode, you can easily go find it. Battlefield 5 was the last of the series with a server browser that included official matchmaking servers, so there’s never a shortage of servers to choose from (even if you’re stuck in a queue for a bit). Fingers crossed that curating your experience in the Battlefield 6 “Portal browser” will be as useful.

Peek Inside the Sacred Jedi Texts From ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

The Star Wars sequel trilogy remains a hot topic for Star Wars fans, young and old. No matter where you stand on the three films, though, one thing we can probably all agree on is the one prop from the series that we’d most like to hold in our hands and explore: the sacred Jedi texts.

Revealed in Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, the Jedi texts are stored on Ahch-To and watched over by Luke Skywalker after he leaves the Jedi order and the Force behind him. They’re the last remnants of the teachings and history of the Jedi way, something that has long been discussed and battled over in the course of the series. Luke himself remains unclear about their teachings and, despite trying to destroy them, they end up in Rey’s possession by the end of the film. What’s next for those texts, we do not yet know but we now can finally get a good glimpse inside them.

The official Star Wars website recently posted about the props that were created for the films. Forty different books were designed and conceived, from which director Rian Johnson selected 10 for the actual movie. Of those, only one gets shown off in the film, and that book itself took about two weeks to make. It not only includes the page we briefly see in the film but several others too. Pages that existed on set but were never seen. Until now.

The prop clearly still exists, so the question then becomes, will we see it again? Will these texts, which we last saw in Rey’s possession, play a role in how she aims to start a New Jedi Order? Or will Rey’s New Jedi Order go against the teachings in these books? Those clearly didn’t work, as now, almost every Jedi is extinct.

The AirPods Max (USB-C) are available in a few new color options

Don’t Expect New AirPods Max 2 at Apple’s iPhone 17 Event, Report Says

Some of us have been waiting for Apple to announce a new second-gen version of the AirPods Max, its high-end over-ear noise-canceling headphones that were released in December 2020. They were refreshed last year with USB-C connectivity, some new color options and USB-C audio in April of this year. But if a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who’s usually a reliable Apple whisperer, proves accurate, we won’t be seeing the AirPods Max 2 at Apple’s iPhone 17 Event, which is likely to take place in early September based on previous iPhone events.

Gurman says what I’ve suspected for while: The AirPods Max are “too popular for Apple to stop selling them, and not popular enough for the company to invest a ton of time and money into creating a new version.” MacRumors posted an article Monday that summarizes Gurman’s comments in his latest Power On newsletter, which is behind a paywall. 

Citing industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has a pretty good track record with Apple predictions, with a 72.5% accuracy rating over 142 rumors posts, a lighter version of the AirPods Max may only enter mass production in 2027 and that “Apple’s audio team is more focused on annual AirPods updates and supporting audio components across other products.”

While we probably won’t see a new version of the AirPods Max this year, many folks are predicting we will see the AirPods Pro 3 at Apple’s iPhone 17 Event this fall. As I talk about in my full roundup of everything we know about the AirPods Pro 3, there’s been a lot of chatter about the AirPods 3 getting Apple’s next-gen audio processor, the H3, which would help power new features and help improve not only sound quality but noise-canceling and voice-calling performance along with Apple’s Hearing Aid feature and a rumored new translation feature.

The AIrPods Max are only equipped with Apple’s H1 chip, so it doesn’t support all the features found in the AirPods Pro 2, which use Apple’s H2 chip. These features include Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Apple’s Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection features. While the AirPods Max remain excellent noise-canceling headphones and have been a fixture on CNET’s best noise-canceling headphones list since their release, it’s a shame Apple’s most expensive headphones don’t have its latest AirPods tech. But we’ll hopefully know a lot more about the future of its AirPods line in just a few weeks, so stay tuned.

A number of WIRED writers and editors use Ooni pizza ovens on a regular basis in their own homes, thanks to their ease of use, clean design, and options for multiple fuel sources. They also look particularly attractive on a backyard patio, with stainless steel shells and striking angles. While it varies between models, the Koda 2 Max has great heat consistency and high enough temperatures to get a proper crust.

While this monument to pizza-making is definitely appealing for big families and friend groups, it’s not for the fainthearted. Ooni leverages in-house technology to distribute the heat evenly across the two massive pizza stones, which means a little bit of warm-up time before you can actually get cooking. While there’s a natural gas version of the oven, I was only able to select the propane version on the site, so your mileage may vary.

While it does include a fuel hose and two temperature probes, the Koda Max 2 doesn’t include a peel, so you’ll want to make sure you get one that’s big and sturdy enough for the task. It also weighs in at almost 100 pounds fully assembled, so if you want to avoid recruiting a friend or family member to help move it, Ooni is also offering 20 percent off the waterproof cover.

Overwatch 2 will overhaul its progression systems to show more visual flair in matches

The next season of Overwatch 2 will bring more than the usual new hero and battle pass to the team shooter. Blizzard announced that Season 18 will introduce a new take on the progression system. As they currently stand, the progression numbers feel pretty divorced from the gameplay; this revamp introduces new ways to display your prowess to teammates and foes in matches as well as some welcome changes to how you see and equip your rewards. 

The new Progression 2.0 system has overhauled the visual side. For starters, there will be new portrait frames that increase in fanciness every 20 levels, capping at level 60. These Ascended borders will be displayed when you pick your hero for a match. Between the different Ascended frames, players will unlock five tiers of hero badges that also display in Hero Select under your portrait.

In addition to the new flash, the Hero Select screen will show your allies a card with your top heroes on it. I doubt anyone will pay too much attention to cards in the Open Queue matches, so this seems like a Competitive-angled addition. It could help make it easy to build a team composition based on the whole group’s strengths, creating a test of your crew’s cooperation ability before the game even starts. Blizzard clarified that in Competitive, opponents won’t be able to see your portrait borders until 10-15 seconds after a match begins, and hero cards won’t be displayed to an enemy until one of you eliminates each other. That means nobody should be able to use your hero card against you in the ban phase.

I’ve almost never thought about the rewards I get for progression stats because it’s unclear when I’ve gotten a new item and I rarely bother searching for them in my cosmetics collections, so having a dedicated progression menu added should place a new focus on tracking how far you’ve gotten with a particular character. The hero-specific rewards on the horizon will be displayed on that page, and already-unlocked items can be equipped directly from that menu. Blizzard is also offering occasional Epic and Legendary loot box freebies as you rise through the ranks for each hero, which is always welcome. 

The progression levels will be rewarded retroactively when the season starts. For long-time fans, that means you can expect to see a whole bunch of rewards to browse through when you first log in during Season 18. For new players, there will be more credits and cosmetics available to unlock in the first 20 levels. That first set of 20 levels will also be scaled to be quicker to complete, while later levels will require more time.

The new season kicks off tomorrow, on August 26. Season 18 will also bring a new option for keyboard and mouse controls on console and the permanent addition of watery support hero Wuyang.

YouTube TV could lose Fox channels this week

With the start of the NFL season looming, it’s also a window where many TV contracts are up for renewal, and on Monday evening, YouTube TV and Fox sent out alerts indicating that their contract could come to an end as soon as August 27th, at 5PM ET. Google-owned YouTube TV says that “Fox is asking for payments that are far higher than what partners with comparable content offerings receive,” while Fox claims that “Google is attempting to use its market power to pressure FOX to agree to unfavorable and one-sided terms, prioritizing their own interests over a fair agreement for its customer.”

Channels at risk include Fox News, Fox Business, Fox Sports, and the Big Ten Network. But in areas where Fox also owns the local broadcast network, a disruption could also cost viewers access to a chunk of NFL games, which is why the contract is up for renewal now. Awful Announcing points out that the first big game on the slate is a college football matchup, Texas vs. Ohio State on Saturday, before week one of NFL games starts the following weekend.

Other than navigating the shrinking reach and influence of traditional cable TV, another complication for a new deal could be Fox’s just-launched Fox One direct-to-consumer streaming package, which currently includes access for pay TV subscribers at no additional charge to them over their existing bill. It’s unclear how that might affect the negotiations, or outbursts from Trump and other politicians if Fox News is unavailable to YouTube TV’s subscribers, which analyst MoffettNathanson recently estimated at 9.4 million.

YouTube TV’s announcement says that if they can’t reach a deal, then Fox One is an option for consumers, and that it will credit members $10 “…if Fox content becomes unavailable for an extended period of time.”

I saw Samsung’s $30,000, 115-inch micro-RGB TV, and its vivid picture outshines mini-LED TVs

Samsung’s massive, in both price and size, micro-RGB TV is barely two weeks old, but it’s making waves for those two factors as well as the promised visual quality. The 115-inch Micro RGB Samsung Vision AI Smart TV – yes, a long formal product name for sure – is out in Korea right now for 44.9 million KRW and will soon be up for order in the United States at $29,999 with more markets to follow.

I had the chance to check one out in person at Samsung’s new headquarters in New Jersey. While it wasn’t a formal testing session, it was clear from my first look that Samsung’s micro-RGB tech here is creating immersion on a grand scale with picture quality to rival even the best OLED TVs.

I also had the chance to view it after seeing the similarly sized and priced, but notably different 115” Class Samsung QN90F Neo QLED 4K TV. And while that TV looks sharp and bright, the new micro-RGB TV’s picture is much more controlled and realistic. Samsung even created a custom Micro RGB AI Engine to handle visuals in the $30,000 TV, specifically for the likes of upscaling and enhancing colors.

The tech here is reflected in the name of the product category – micro-RGB TV – and it’s the first consumer release from Samsung. It uses micro-scale LEDs for the TV’s backlight, which is comprised of individual, quite tiny red, green, and blue modules. That’s the key difference here – like the best mini-LED TVs, it still uses the core principles of LCD technology, but swaps white or blue backlighting for red, green, and blue micro-scale LEDs that can be more accurately controlled. All, of course, in a quest to deliver the best picture quality.

So while this isn’t at the same level as Samsung’s The Wall microLED tech, the 115-inch micro-RGB TV is a stunner, with the ability to produce vivid, rich, and crisp colors that don’t skew super bright and end up oversaturating or blowing out a particular visual. While Samsung only had test content running on the micro-RGB TV, it looked great from all angles, not just a direct head-on view. Even at extreme angles to the left or right in the lifestyle set-up space, the micro-RGB delivered a vivid view, with reds and blues especially popping.

Having also seen the 115-inch Neo QLED 4K TV, I can confidently say it outperformed it in terms of visuals, at those angles and even head-on. It simply looked a step above, offering more accurate, realistic interpretations of colors that could still pop and get bright without skewing them out of reality. It has more than four times the dimming zones compared to top mini-LED TVs, and significantly greater color accuracy.

Contrast points for more stark or ones that require black were a bit more minimal in the test footage. However, since it can turn off those individual LEDs, it didn’t offer lesser performance there.

Of course, Samsung’s 115-inch micro-RGB TV won’t be for everyone. $30,000 is a lot for a TV, especially a first-generation of sorts, and even though it’s still LCD-based, the excitement here is around the use of individual red, green, and blue micro-scale LED modules in the backlight. The pictures here don’t really do justice to the experience of viewing this, but I’m really excited about where micro-RGB is going. It does undercut Samsung’s own The Wall, which is true microLED and costs a ton more, so seeing that bits of that tech are starting to trickle down might make for more exciting developments in this space.

Alongside it being Samsung’s first micro-RGB TV, this 115-inch size also comes with the brand’s VisionAI tech onboard for smarter features – like asking what something is while you’re watching content – but also handles the upscaling to ensure content looks great on this grand scale. You’ll also find Samsung’s Art Store here, and you do get access to a rotating allotment of photos and art to display, even if you don’t subscribe. Although I didn’t get to try any gaming or watch F1 races, the TV does support a 144Hz refresh rate.

If you get the chance to see this TV in person, I would take the opportunity to – it’s certainly one of the best I’ve seen in quite some time.

For now, Samsung’s 115-inch micro-RGB TV is available in Korea at 44.9 million KRW and will soon be available in the United States for $29,999. You can sign up for more details on that launch here, and the company has confirmed it should roll out to more markets in the coming months. Just make sure you have the space for it.

In 2019, PC Gamer published the in-depth feature PC gaming in China: Everything you need to know about the world’s biggest PC games industry. At the time, our goal in covering what our shared hobby looks like in a country that Western players still have little insight into.

“China’s PC gaming industry is the largest in the world by a wide margin. The entire US games industry, including PC, mobile, and console games, generated only $30.4 billion in revenue in 2018—China’s PC gaming scene alone is equal to about half of that,” reporter Steven Messner wrote at the time. “In spite of those numbers, you might be hard-pressed to name a Chinese-made PC game.”

One year later, Chinese developer Game Science announced Black Myth: Wukong, and everything changed.

“The past 10 years was a crazy, historic decade for the Chinese gaming industry,” the founder of Chinese studio S-Game told me in Beijing last month. That may even be an understatement from Qiwei “Soulframe” Liang, who’s directing Phantom Blade Zero, which I think has the potential to be the next action game to leave a Black Myth-sized impression on players. I’ve already talked and written about Phantom Blade Zero a lot, but it’s not the only game picking up the torch from Black Myth and running with it.

In 2019, Chinese PC gaming was its own ecosystem that we wanted to help PC gamers outside China wrap their heads around, but most of biggest hits—League of Legends, PUBG—were imports, rather than games developed in China. And the relatively few hit games being developed in China were unlikely to be translated for other parts of the world.

In 2024, Black Myth: Wukong proved that big budget PC games developed in China could kill it on the world stage.

By 2030, we’re going to be inundated by games of that same caliber.

What we’re seeing now is a wave of games inspired and emboldened by Black Myth, as developers there take profits they made in mobile and start putting it towards what we more often think of as AAA games—like when Netflix started producing TV and films and gave Martin Scorsese $150 million dollars to make a 3-hour gangster drama. Chinese devs are hungry for that same prestige, and big publishers like Tencent and NetEase have the deep pockets needed to fund their blockbusters.

“All the focus is on making triple-A games. You can see a lot are coming,” Liang said. “It’s different. For Americans, it’s not a new concept, because you guys are making huge games. GTA or something like that is quite familiar. Black Myth: Wukong has created this possibility for Chinese games, but I would say for most, the quality is still your basement, your foundation. Making the games better is very important.

“I think there’s a pride for the gamers who played Black Myth, because they feel: We can make such a game. So we are very careful as Chinese developers to fulfill the requirements, the hype of the Chinese gamers. We have to make the games even better.”

This is going to be a defining story of the next decade in PC gaming. So when I was invited by S-Game to fly to Beijing for an event focused on Phantom Blade Zero, I also saw it as a chance to really get a sense for where the Chinese industry is right now, and maybe peek over the horizon at where it’s going.
