David Tennant and Billie Piper Have a ‘Doctor Who’ Pitch

by admin October 2, 2025

Even a Time Lord (or a guy who’s spent a great deal of his career wrangling Time Lords) can’t confirm when Doctor Who will return. But the BBC has made assurances we’ll see the TARDIS again, with or without Disney assistance, and while viewers may have had mixed feelings about the Fifteenth Doctor’s farewell, there’s still a ton of goodwill for Doctor Who as a franchise. Fans want to see it succeed, and two of the show’s most beloved stars have an idea of what might be the way forward.

As the Radio Times reports, David Tennant (the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctor) and Billie Piper (who played Rose Tyler and was last seen regenerating out of Ncuti Gatwa, somehow) were at the recent Los Angeles Comic Con and agreed they’d love to do a Doctor Who movie.

“I always was pitching for that,” Piper said. “Where’s the film? … I loved it that people went to see the last Doctor Who episode [‘The Reality War’] in the cinema. I just loved that. I would love the Doctor Who experience on the big screen. They’re sort of like films anyway. But yeah, I’d do that. Wouldn’t you?”

“Oh, for sure, yeah,” Tennant said. “We’re available!”

You can’t tell from that brief exchange if the stars had a TV movie in mind—or an actual Peter Cushing-style theatrical production. It does make a certain amount of sense, though, to shake up the formula as a sort of reset before Doctor Who returns to its episodic roots. You can almost see the Dalek and TARDIS-shaped popcorn buckets.

While we ponder Doctor Who‘s uncertain future on screens, it lives on in comics—as well as a five-episode spin-off series, The War Between Land and Sea, coming to the BBC and Disney+ sometime next year.

China Rolls Out Its First Talent Visa as the US Retreats on H-1Bs

by admin October 2, 2025

The bottom line is that, unlike the US, China is not a country of immigrants. In 2020, only about .1 percent of the mainland population was made up of foreigners, according to one estimate by researchers from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. That’s roughly 1.4 million people in a country of more than 1.4 billion. In the United States, by contrast, 15 percent of the population is made up of immigrants. Even other East Asian nations, like Japan and South Korea, are home to far more foreigners than China in terms of their relative population size.

Because the US already has a large immigrant population from all over the world, it can be easier for new arrivals to adjust. Local companies operate in English, the language of global business. Colleagues and friends communicate through platforms like Gmail and Instagram, which are available in most parts of the world. And when it comes to creature comforts, H-1B recipients from India or China who land in San Francisco or New York will have no trouble finding restaurants (even good ones!) that serve food that tastes like home.

In China, however, newcomers must navigate a corporate landscape that operates largely in Chinese, a language few foreigners study in grade school or while pursuing a STEM degree. The country’s tech ecosystem is also totally unique. New arrivals face not only an unfamiliar language and culture, but also a suite of unfamiliar programs and apps, most notably WeChat.

Better Reputation

There are signs that more people might be willing to overcome these barriers to experience the benefits of living in China, a place now increasingly associated with high-speed trains, electric cars, and futuristic cities. In places like Greece, Spain, and Germany, the majority of people now view China as the world’s top economic power, according to the Pew Research Center. Africa, the continent with the world’s youngest and fastest-growing population, already sends more students to study in China each year than to the US or UK.

I’ve personally noticed that my American friends and family seem to have much more positive impressions of China than they did a few years ago. That might be in part due to the popularity of Chinese exports like TikTok, Temu, and Labubu. Several friends have even told me they specifically want to visit Chongqing, a Chinese megacity that didn’t attract many foreign tourists until videos of its skyline and hot pot restaurants went viral on Instagram and TikTok.

Whether this growing curiosity translates into people actually moving to China will depend in part on how the government handles programs like the new K visa. The policy lowers barriers for people who want to study or work there, but it has also stirred anxieties at home. For now, it’s unclear whether it will become a genuine gateway for new waves of international talent, or falter in the face of the same rising nationalist sentiments reshaping politics around the world.

Prime Day deals include the Amazon Echo Spot for only $50

by admin October 2, 2025

Amazon may have announced new Echo Show devices recently, but it didn’t touch the humble Echo Spot. The smart alarm clock remains the smallest Echo device with a display, but it’s one that’s really best just for showing the time, weather and other quick bits of information. You can grab one now for only $50 thanks to Prime Day deals; that’s 38 percent off its usual price.

The latest incarnation of the diminutive Spot was introduced in July 2024, and while it’s not quite available for its record low price of $45 right now, $50 is pretty close. For that you get a comfortably bedside-sized device with a sharper display than its predecessor, as well as superior sound. The front face is divided into two halves, with a speaker positioned below the hemispherical display.

Amazon

$50 is close to a record low for the latest Echo Spot.

$50 at Amazon

What screen you do have is more than enough to display the time and weather information, plus it can show you the song or album title and accompanying artwork when you’re listening to music on those improved speakers. It can naturally be used to boss around your other connected smart devices, too.

Alexa might be baked in, but the Echo Spot is intended to be a fairly bare-bones smart alarm clock, so don’t expect as many features as you’ll find on something like the Echo Show 5. But a lot of people just want a modern alarm clock, and arguably the biggest selling point for the Echo Spot is its total lack of a camera. While that means it can do less than the original 2017 Echo Spot, which Amazon did put a camera in, the decision to remove it from a device that lives right next to your bed was probably for the best.

Amazon’s Prime Day sale returns on October 7, so you can expect a range of deals on its various Echo devices. For our guide to all of the best early deals, head here.

Instagram tests opening right onto Reels

by admin October 2, 2025

Instagram is testing a potentially major change to the app: making Reels the home tab of the app. As part of an opt-in test in India, Meta is making Reels and DMs the first two tabs on the app, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri. Mosseri says that Reels and DMs have been a key driver of growth for Instagram over the past few years, which is why it’s “exploring” the change.

In a video in his post, you can see how the new home tab would work. Part of the tab will look familiar, like the horizontal list of Stories to check out at the top, but when you start to scroll up, the layout shifts into what you might recognize from the current Reels tab, where pretty much the entire screen is filled with video. Photos from accounts you follow will still be included in this revised version of the home tab, Mosseri says, but the video doesn’t show how.

Instagram has already been dabbling with this shift with its recently-launched iPad app, which opens into Reels from its home tab. In its post announcing the app, Meta said that it designed the experience that way “to reflect how people use bigger screens today – for lean back entertainment.” But this new test indicates that Instagram is thinking about making Reels an even more prominent part of its main mobile app, too.

US Air Force investigating data breach caused by Microsoft SharePoint issue

by admin October 2, 2025

  • US Air Force investigating SharePoint breach exposing PII and PHI across its systems
  • Chinese-linked groups exploited SharePoint flaws
  • Microsoft and US authorities are actively investigating the scope and impact of the breach

The US Air Force is reportedly investigating a potential data breach caused by a Microsoft SharePoint issue.

A report from The Register revealed the Air Force Personnel Center Directorate of Technology and Information issued a data breach notification shared on social media.

“This message is to inform you of a critical Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Protected Health Information (PHI) exposure related to USAF SharePoint Permissions,” the warning reads. “As a result of this breach, all USAF SharePoints will be blocked Air Force-wide to protect sensitive information.”

The Register reported Microsoft Teams and Power BI dashboards should also be blocked since they access SharePoint, but this information is unconfirmed at this time.

“The Department of the Air Force is aware of a privacy-related issue,” an Air Force spokesperson told The Register.

Further information out there is scarce right now, with little information on who the threat actors are and what they sought to achieve.

Obviously, most fingers are now being pointed towards China, following reports in early July 2025 that Microsoft had confirmed three Chinese-affiliated hacking groups exploited vulnerabilities in on-prem SharePoint servers.

Sign up to the TechRadar Pro newsletter to get all the top news, opinion, features and guidance your business needs to succeed!

The groups, called Linen Typhoon, Violet Typhoon, and Storm-2603, targeted flaws that allowed authentication bypass and remote code execution, which enabled them to steal sensitive data such as MachineKey information.

These exploits affected at least two US federal agencies and numerous other organizations globally. The situation is being actively investigated by both Microsoft and US authorities.

However, we should also not forget Russian state-sponsored groups, who have the skills and the infrastructure to pull this kind of attack off, and have done so in the not-too-distant-past, as well.

Previously, Microsoft faced US government fire over its lax cybersecurity approach, which even forced it to change how it operated – let’s see if this time it is any different.

Fortnite insists it wasn’t stitched up by Warner Bros. and the Peacemaker emote, but is modifying it anyway ‘to avoid any confusion’

by admin October 2, 2025

Last week, Fortnite pulled the Peaceful Hips emote—which recreated a portion of the opening dance in James Gunn’s DC show Peacemaker—after the latest episode’s bombshell completely changed the context around the movement.

After Epic said it would “inquire into our partner’s creative intentions in this collab emote,” it’s now determined that Warner Bros. most definitely was not trying to stitch the developer up. But, you know, it’s changing the emote anyway. Just to be safe.

Warning: spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 6 ahead!

Related articles

The Peaceful Hips emote was added to the Fortnite store earlier in September, before being promptly removed just a few days after Peacemaker’s sixth episode of its second season aired. The reason? Well, the episode revealed a pretty major plot twist: John Cena’s character has been milling around in a seemingly-perfect alternate universe… which turned out to be an America that lost to Germany in World War 2. An all-white America, a swastika in place of the American flag’s stars. A Nazi utopia, essentially.

We’ve worked closely with our partners at Warner Bros. Games to confirm there were no creative intentions to connect the Peaceful Hips Emote and the current Peacemaker storyline. To avoid any confusion, we’re modifying the Emote choreography in next week’s update. If they prefer,…October 1, 2025

The revelation gave some rather damning new context to the goofy dance number Peacemaker performs in the show’s opening—at one point, he’s seen flapping his arms in a way that could be perceived as resembling a swastika. More importantly, the move seems to be an exact replica of one performed by Donald Duck in the anti-Nazi propaganda short film Der Fuehrer’s Face from 1942.

That also happens to be the exact snippet used for the Peaceful Hips emote. You see the problem here.

Now, in a follow-up post, the Fortnite Status X account wrote: “We’ve worked closely with our partners at Warner Bros. Games to confirm there were no creative intentions to connect the Peaceful Hips emote and the current Peacemaker storyline. To avoid any confusion, we’re modifying the Emote choreography in next week’s update.” Epic says that players who purchased the emote prior to its removal are free to return it without spending any refund tickets.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

Presumably the updated emote will take a slightly less damning portion of the dance, while still being from the second season’s choreography.

Ultimately it’s probably the best move for Epic, even though the response as to whether it’s a necessary move is mixed. Removing the implication entirely is likely to save the developer a massive headache—and even if that wasn’t the emote’s intention, it was most certainly going to be exploited in that manner. Will that go away even after an alteration? Who knows

Researchers Claim First ‘Unconditional Proof’ of Quantum Advantage. What Happens Next?

by admin October 2, 2025

Quantum computers are already here, even though it’s not readily apparent. Now, researchers say quantum advantage—the field’s long-promised milestone of outperforming classical computers—appears to have finally arrived. But the story comes with an important caveat.

Research by scientists at the University of Texas at Austin and Colorado computing firm Quantinuum devised and carried out an experiment that demonstrates “unconditional” quantum advantage, sometimes referred to as quantum supremacy. As the researchers phrased it, their “result is provable and permanent: no future development in classical algorithms can close this gap.” The preprint, which has yet to be peer reviewed, was made available on arXiv earlier this month.

Gizmodo reached out to several experts in the field, who affirmed the new results. They added that the experiment, while commendable, isn’t the most practical use of a quantum computer—which already gets flak for its uselessness to everyday users.

Then again, “quantum advantage” is a weird, surprisingly malleable concept with many possible applications. Overall, the results are definitely worth a closer look.

Alice and Bob make a cameo

Quantum enthusiasts may be familiar with Alice and Bob, two fictional characters often summoned for quantum thought experiments. In the context of the new experiment, Alice and Bob are two researchers collaborating on a computation using a single device. They receive different inputs at different points in time, but only Alice can send Bob a message, and not the other way around. Based on Alice’s message, Bob must decide how to measure and interpret to produce a final output.

A simplified diagram representing the experimental setup. © Kretschmer et al., 2025

According to the paper, “the use of a quantum message can provably reduce the amount of communication required by an exponential factor compared to any protocol that uses classical communication alone.” In other words, a small quantum message can replace a much larger classical one. To prove their point, the team repeated the experiment 10,000 times on Quantinuum’s H1-1 trapped-ion quantum computers, coupled with a careful mathematical validation of their protocol.

Surprisingly, they found that a quantum computer only needed 12 qubits (qubits are the smallest unit of information for quantum computers) to solve this problem. By contrast, even the most efficient classical computers needed 330 bits.

A different way to play the game

“This is a very different type of quantum advantage than we have seen before—not better or worse, but it’s just proving something completely different from past experiments,” Bill Fefferman, a computer scientist at the University of Chicago, told Gizmodo in an email. Fefferman previously collaborated with senior author Scott Aaronson but wasn’t involved in the new study.

Fefferman explained that scientists typically equate quantum advantage to “striving to perform a computation on a quantum computer that can be solved dramatically faster than any classical computer.” By contrast, the new experiment achieves “quantum information supremacy,” in which the focus isn’t so much on speed as it is on using fewer qubits to solve a problem that classical computers need many more bits to crack.

“It is true that their result is unconditional, in the sense that it doesn’t rely on unproven assumptions,” Fefferman said. “This is, of course, a great feature of this new experiment, but it’s also inherited by this ‘moving of the goalposts.’”

Gizmodo contacted the study’s authors, who said they couldn’t comment until the paper is formally published.

Pressing the advantage

The results raise questions about the broader goals of proving quantum advantage. As IBM Quantum’s director told Gizmodo in a previous interview, a potential answer is to ask how quantum computers can enhance computing problems we’re already familiar with.

IBM’s Quantum System Two installed at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science in Kobe, Japan. © IBM

But as Fefferman noted, there isn’t necessarily a better or worse approach for arriving at quantum advantage—although this “goalpost” appears to be the holy grail for the field’s struggle to prove its worth.

That may be a product of quantum computing’s history, Giuseppe Carleo, a computational physicist at EPFL in Switzerland who wasn’t involved in the new work, explained to Gizmodo in a video call. The rapid growth of quantum computing makes it easy to forget how recently the right hardware became available to test theory.

“So the field has developed historically in the past 20, 30 years much closer to mathematics, rather than an applied field where, if you want, you can use a machine to run things,” said Carleo, who spoke with Gizmodo about the history of quantum computing. As a result, most of the analysis in the field remained at theoretical levels for a longer time than scientists would’ve hoped.

But with hardware advances and a fast-growing industry, this trend is gradually shifting—as it should, Carleo said. More projects are moving away from designing quantum advantage experiments “specifically tailored to show advantage,” he said, turning instead to places where quantum computers can help, not necessarily upend.

That’s actually closer to the field’s “origins,” he added. Richard Feynman, the physicist instrumental to quantum computing’s foundations, suggested that quantum computers should predict quantum phenomena. Sure, there might not be so much “money attached to it,” but they are “of tremendous interest for theoretical physics,” particularly with regard to fundamental questions about our universe, Carleo explained.

Quantum-anything never makes it easy

The new experiment might struggle to prove its immediate connection to practicality. But in a way, the preprint does adhere to Feynman’s advice. It’s certainly a theoretically robust demonstration of using quantum hardware to investigate quantum concepts.

At this very moment, that makes it seem detached from reality. Then again, when has anything quantum ever given easy answers? Yet, if science history is any guide, the best discoveries come from the most unexpected, seemingly impractical pursuits. We’ll just have to keep watch.

How to Use Double XP Tokens in Black Ops 6 and Warzone

by admin October 2, 2025

If you’re looking for your next hit of double experience in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, you’re not alone. While developer Treyarch frequently runs double XP weekends for the most recent Call of Duty game, not every player can take advantage of the full event.

When the weekend is over, players are often left looking for ways to keep the speedy XP gain they grew accustomed to. The solution is double XP tokens, which can help gamers level up their player level, weapon levels and battle pass tiers twice as fast.

Many players have an ample supply of Black Ops 6 double XP tokens, but with Black Ops 7 arriving in just a few months, now is the time to start earning double XP tokens for the next game, too. If you know where to look, there are giveaways and promotions that will help you get a head start in the next Call of Duty game.

With multiple seasons of unlockable guns and melee weapons to catch up on and the introduction of the new XP-based Warzone Armory, players will be benefiting from double weapon XP more than ever before.

If you don’t know how to get more double XP tokens to keep leveling up quickly after double XP weekends, we’re here to help. Here’s every way you can use double XP tokens in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 right now.

Can you use double XP tokens on Double XP Weekend?

Black Ops 6 and Warzone players aren’t able to activate double XP tokens during a double XP weekend. When attempting to open the double XP token menu to activate your tokens, they’ll be grayed out and unable to be interacted with for the duration of the event.

Any double XP time that players had activated before double XP weekend will be frozen, and will reactivate once the universal double XP boost comes to an end. Players will also be able to continue activating their double XP tokens after Sunday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT), when the double XP weekend wraps up.

How to earn free XP tokens in Black Ops 6

Most of the ways to earn Black Ops 6’s double XP tokens involve microtransactions or external marketing campaigns, but there are still some ways to earn the boosts without spending a single cent.

Multiplayer prestige

In addition to operator skins, weapon skins, zombies gobblegums, calling cards and emblems, advancing your account to a new prestige grants you a 1-hour XP token.

Activision/Screenshot by CNET

Reaching max rank and choosing to prestige your account is the most reliable way to earn double XP tokens in Black Ops 6. Each time you enter a new prestige level, you’ll be rewarded with a 1-hour token for double player XP. Since there are 10 player prestige levels, you can gain a maximum of 10 hours’ worth of double XP tokens through the prestige system.

Seasonal battle pass

The battle pass will have new weapons, operator skins and other goodies for enterprising players to earn. But most importantly, they have coveted double XP tokens.

Activision

As Black Ops 6 enters season 1, it has been confirmed that the battle pass will offer double player XP and double weapon XP tokens on multiple unlockable tiers. The premium battle pass requires a Call of Duty point investment from players, but there are double XP tokens on free battle pass tiers that anyone can earn by just playing the game.

Giveaways through official channels

Occasionally, codes for double XP tokens are shared on official Call of Duty communication channels. Most recently, the Call of Duty account on X ran a giveaway where players could earn up to 3 hours of double player XP, weapon XP and battle pass XP before the launch of Black Ops 6. It’s worth keeping an eye on Call of Duty’s social media pages to spot future double XP token giveaways.

Paying for XP tokens in Black Ops 6

Opening your wallet and shelling out some cash is the quickest way to nab some double XP tokens to level up your Call of Duty gameplay. These are the most reliable ways to secure some tokens for your account.

Microtransactions

The CODE Endeavour: Tracer Pack is the first Black Ops 6 microtransaction to include double XP tokens.

Activision

Double XP tokens are included in certain purchasable bundles in Black Ops 6. The first available bundle, the CODE Endeavour: Tracer Pack, has two double XP tokens. There’s a 1-hour double-player XP token and a 1-hour double weapon XP token. The Tracer Pack: Cash Bandit Reactive, introduced in Season 1, also contains a 1-hour double-player XP token.

Future bundles and microtransactions will also likely include double XP tokens.

External promotions

If you buy a promotional can of Monster Energy, you should find a code for Call of Duty loot under the pull ring.

Monster Energy

Call of Duty is partnered with external brands, including Monster Energy and Little Caesars, which can bring special campaigns to Black Ops 6 players. Buying products from these brands and redeeming reward codes allows gamers to earn Call of Duty Points, exclusive operator skins, weapon skins, weapon blueprints, weapon vinyls, calling cards and emblems. Most importantly, you’ll have a chance to earn double XP tokens to use in the multiplayer and zombies modes in Black Ops 6.

Stock up on double XP tokens for Black Ops 7

There might not be many external promotions left for Black Ops 6’s life cycle, but the collaborations are already ramping up for Black Ops 7. Monster Energy has partnered with Activision once more, bringing new cosmetic rewards and healthy heaps of XP tokens to the table before the next Call of Duty launches.

Will Black Ops 6 double XP tokens be usable in Black Ops 7?

While we don’t know for certain whether or not Black Ops 6 double XP tokens will carry over to the next game, it’s safe to assume that they will not. The double XP tokens from Modern Warfare 3 never properly carried over to Black Ops 6, and we already have confirmation that no weapon or operator skins from Black Ops 6 will carry over to 7.

What is likely, however, is that the common loophole to use legacy double XP tokens will still work by the time Black Ops 7 launches. If you want to use your double XP tokens from older Call of Duty games, you can access them from the Warzone menu.

Once the double XP tokens are activated in Warzone, players can navigate the Call of Duty hub to their intended game — in this case, that would be Black Ops 7 — and reap the rewards of double XP while playing multiplayer modes.

You can unlock operator skins and double XP tokens for the next Call of Duty game before it even comes out.

Activision

How to earn Black Ops 7 double XP tokens now

Monster Energy has partnered with Call of Duty to put together a promotion that will look very familiar to Black Ops 6 fans. Specially marked cans of Monster Energy include codes that unlock Black Ops 7 rewards, including operator skins, weapon blueprints, decals and sweet, sweet double XP tokens. Here’s the order in which you’ll earn Call of Duty Black Ops 7 rewards by redeeming Monster Energy codes.

  • Energy Flash decal and 15-minute double XP token unlocked with the first code.
  • Peacekeeper MK1 Hyper Green weapon blueprint and 15-minute double XP token unlocked with the second code.
  • Green Fury operator skin and 15-minute double XP token unlocked with the third code.
  • VS Recon Green Thunder weapon blueprint and 15-minute double XP token unlocked with the fourth code.
  • Daylight Ripper operator skin and 15-minute double XP token unlocked with the fifth code.

There are no unique cosmetic rewards to be gained after redeeming the first five codes, but that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. Every subsequent code redemption unlocks an additional 15-minute double XP token to use on your Black Ops 7 account. These promotional codes must be used by March 31, 2026, in order to provide the rewards listed above.

Black Ops 6 double XP token FAQs

How do I activate double XP tokens in Black Ops 6?

You can activate double XP tokens from the main menu for the multiplayer or zombies mode in Black Ops 6. A small box on the bottom right of the screen shows you how many double XP tokens you have — pressing the hotkey shown next to that box will open a menu where you can activate your desired tokens.

Should I use my double XP tokens on double XP weekend?

Double XP tokens are locked on double XP weekends, which means you can’t access or activate them during that time.

Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin Wins Contract to Take NASA Rover to the Moon

by admin October 2, 2025

NASA’s VIPER lunar rover could be delivered to the moon by Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ aerospace company. The US space agency has awarded the company a task order to design a delivery plan for the rover, with a future delivery option.

The award, worth $190 million, was issued through NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which the agency is using to buy delivery services to the moon from private companies. The award does not directly imply a delivery agreement; first, NASA will verify whether Blue Origin is capable of successfully sending the expensive VIPER rover to the moon’s south pole. To be eligible to take on the VIPER delivery, the company must place its Blue Moon MK1 lunar lander—complete with a NASA technology payload—on the lunar surface by the end of 2025.

Blue Origin won this contract to send cargo to the moon in 2023, and designed the Blue Moon MK1 in order to fulfil it. On this mission, it will carry NASA stereo cameras that will conduct surface surveys, in addition to small spheres equipped with laser technology for mission tracking.

“There is an option on the contract to deliver and safely deploy the rover to the Moon’s surface. NASA will make the decision to exercise that option after the execution and review of the base task and of Blue Origin’s first flight of the Blue Moon MK1 lander,” the agency said in a statement.

On the same day as NASA announced the award, Blue Origin wrote on X: “Our second Blue Moon MK1 lander is already in production and well-suited to support the VIPER rover. Building on the learnings from our first MK1 lander, this mission is important for future lunar permanence and will teach us about the origin and distribution of water on the Moon.”

VIPER—which stands for Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover—has been designed by NASA scientists to explore the moon’s south pole for ice and other resources of interest. It is about 2.5 meters tall, weighs nearly 500 kilograms, and has a one-meter drill and three scientific instruments. The vehicle had been scheduled to launch in 2023, only for that date to be pushed back. Then, in the face of rising costs and further delays, in July 2024 NASA said it had cancelled the mission. The CLPS award to Blue Origin now appears to have revived the program.

The arrival of private space companies has the potential to reduce the traditional costs of space exploration while allowing mission managers to focus on scientific issues. Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, and SpaceX are just some of the companies that have emerged in this sector and won CLPS contracts with NASA.

“NASA is leading the world in exploring more of the Moon than ever before, and this delivery is just one of many ways we’re leveraging US industry to support a long-term American presence on the lunar surface,” said acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy in a statement. “Our rover will explore the extreme environment of the lunar South Pole, traveling to small, permanently shadowed regions to help inform future landing sites for our astronauts and better understand the Moon’s environment—important insights for sustaining humans over longer missions, as America leads our future in space.”

This story originally appeared on WIRED en Español and has been translated from Spanish.
