Creatives and Disney+ Subscribers Call for Boycotts Over Jimmy Kimmel Suspension

by admin September 19, 2025

In the hours after ABC decided to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live over the host’s comments about the death of Charlie Kirk, celebrities, creatives, politicians, and trade unions took to social media to decry the decision. Now, the response has escalated, as both big names and regular folks are encouraging a boycott of not just ABC but parent company Disney, which covers a lot of turf in Hollywood.

Damon Lindelof, whose credits include the long-running ABC sci-fi mystery series Lost as well as HBO’s Watchmen and The Leftovers, posted a message of support for Kimmel on Instagram. He also noted that if Kimmel’s suspension isn’t lifted soon, “I can’t in good conscience work for the company that imposed it.” (Lindelof’s current project is Lanterns, a DC Studios series headed to HBO next year.)

Also on Instagram, Tatiana Maslany—whose many credits include playing the title character on the Marvel Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law—posted a story encouraging followers to cancel their subscriptions to the company’s stable of streamers, including Disney+.

Screenshot: Instagram

Ordinary folks who don’t have a show-biz stake are also speaking out, with posts calling for a boycott of ABC and/or Disney going viral on on X/Twitter, as well as tales of people who have cancelled their subscriptions to Disney+ and other affiliated platforms. (A search of hashtags like  #BoycottDisney and #BoycottABCNetwork yields many examples.)

According to Bloomberg, there may be some new movement on Kimmel’s situation: “Walt Disney Co. executives will meet Thursday with suspended talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel to discuss the future of his program, according to three people with knowledge of the matter,” the site writes. “The parties will discuss whether there’s a way to return Jimmy Kimmel Live! to the air, according to the people, who weren’t authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be identified.”

The Hollywood Reporter cited its own anonymous source in its own report from earlier today: “Disney is still trying to find a path back to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, according to the source. At the top, executives are hopeful, but note that the future is up to Kimmel’s willingness to participate in the cooling-off process.”

Best 3D Printers (2025) – CNET

by admin September 19, 2025

James Bricknell/CNET

Testing 3D printers is an in-depth process. Printers often don’t use the same materials, or even the same process to create models. I test SLA, 3D printers that use resin and light to print, and FDM, printers that melt plastic onto a plate. Each has a unique methodology. Core qualifiers I look at include:

  • Hardware quality
  • Ease of setup
  • Bundled software
  • Appearance and accuracy of prints
  • Repairability
  • Company and community support

A key test print, representing the OG CNET logo, is used to assess how a printer bridges gaps, creates accurate shapes, and handles overhangs. It even has little towers to help measure how well the 3D printer handles temperature ranges.

James Bricknell/CNET

When testing speed, we slice the model using the standard slicer the machine is shipped with on its standard settings and then compare the real-world duration of the print to the statement completion time on the slicer. 3D printers often use different slicers, and those slicers can vary wildly on what they believe the completion time to be.

We then use PrusaSlicer to determine how much material the print should use and divide that number by the real-world time it took to print, giving us a more accurate number for the speed in millimeters per second (mm/s) that the printer can run at.

James Bricknell/CNET

Every build plate is supposed to heat up to a certain temperature, so we use the InfiRay thermal imaging camera for Android to check how well they do. We set the build plate to 60 degrees Celsius — the most used temperature for build plates — waited five minutes for the temperature to stabilize, and then measured it in six separate locations. We then took the average temperature to see how close the 3D printer got to the advertised temperature.

Testing resin requires different criteria, so I use the Ameralabs standard test: printing out a small resin model that looks like a tiny town. This helps determine how accurate the printer is, how it deals with small parts and how well the UV exposure works at different points in the model.

Many other anecdotal test prints, using different 3D models, are also run on each printer to test the longevity of the parts and how well the machine copes with various shapes.

For the other criteria, I researched the company to see how well it responds to support queries from customers and how easy it is to order replacement parts and install them yourself. Kits (printers that come only semi-assembled) are judged by how long and difficult the assembly process is and how clear the instructions are.

These Are the 15 New York Officials ICE and NYPD Arrested in Manhattan

by admin September 19, 2025

The problems echo a broader pattern across the US, where watchdogs and courts have flagged overcrowding, poor sanitation, and blocked access to counsel in ICE facilities from Arizona to Louisiana.

Advocates say some of the most jarring overcrowding is happening on 26 Federal Plaza’s 10th floor, where detainees have estimated that between 70 and 90 people have been crammed into rooms measuring roughly 215 square feet. That would leave each person with roughly the space of a doormat—less room than a folded bath towel—in an area no bigger than a studio apartment kitchen.

The arrests came as part of a coordinated action by progressive Democrats, timed to amplify demands for Albany to reconvene and pass the New York for All Act. The bill would bar state and local agencies, including police and sheriffs, from sharing information or resources with ICE, aiming to stop what lawmakers describe as abductions of immigrants at court hearings and check-ins. Along with New York City Council’s proposed Trust Act—which would let people sue if city agencies unlawfully cooperate with ICE—the legislation is essential, Democrats say, to defend due process and prevent local governments from becoming de facto extensions of ICE.

“The criminalization, demonization, and state-sponsored violence against immigrants in this country has reached a fever pitch under this administration. All of us, and especially elected leaders, must do more to protect New Yorkers, regardless of when they arrived,” Assembly member Emily Gallagher, a Democrat who represents parts of Brooklyn, said in a statement.

Many elected officials have been arrested while protesting the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics. Among others, in June, Senator Alex Padilla of California was handcuffed after challenging Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem at a Los Angeles press conference, and in May, Newark mayor Ras Baraka was arrested outside a federal detention center during an attempted oversight visit.

In a statement, Yasmine Farhang, executive director of the Immigrant Defense Project, applauded the lawmakers’ actions Thursday, accusing the US government of “egregious abuses of power,” and imploring New York governor Kathy Hochul to use her clemency powers to shield migrants dealing with overlapping punishments from the courts and immigration authorities.

“New York leaders cannot let this cruelty go unchecked,” she said. “The moment to act is NOW.”

Ready to download iOS 26? See if your iPhone is eligible for the free update first

by admin September 19, 2025

Now that iOS 26 is available to download for many iPhone users — here’s how to install it — it’s time to check your phone to see if you’re eligible for the update. The new OS became available on Monday this week, along with iPadOS 26 and Apple’s other operating system updates.

If your phone is compatible with the latest OS, you’ll notice substantial changes when you install the new update. You may have already heard about “Liquid Glass,” which (intentional or not) is sort of like Apple’s take on the old Windows Vista design language. That’s the most notable change, but we spent two weeks test-driving many of the other features included in the update — you can check out our hands-on iOS 26 preview for more impressions.

Not sure if you have an eligible smartphone or tablet but also don’t want to upgrade? No worries, we’ll help you find out if your devices will be able to run iOS 26.

While Apple didn’t nix any iPhones from its eligibility list last year, that’s not the case for 2025, as a few models are getting the axe this time around. All iPhone 8 models and the iPhone X were the last to receive the boot in 2023, and this year, iPhones released in 2018 will be left behind.

You can find a full list of iPhones and iPads that support iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 below. To see everything you get with the latest OS updates, you can check out our big rundown of what to expect from iOS 26. Additionally, here’s everything Apple revealed at the iPhone 17 launch event, including the all-new iPhone Air. (Check out Engadget’s liveblog of the event for full details.)

These three iOS 18 iPhones aren’t compatible with iOS 26

Unlike last year, a trio of iPhones won’t be eligible to download the newest iOS. These three models that were first released in 2018 won’t be coming to the iOS 26 party:

iPhones compatible with iOS 26

Per Apple’s site, the devices listed below will be compatible with iOS 26. In short, if you have an iPhone that was announced in 2019 or later, you’re in the clear:

  • iPhone SE (second generation or later)

iPads compatible with iPadOS 26

Meanwhile, the iPads listed below are eligible to download iPadOS 26:

  • iPad Pro 12.9‑inch (3rd generation and later)

  • iPad Pro 11‑inch (1st generation and later)

  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later, including M2 and M3)

  • iPad (8th generation and later, including A16)

  • iPad mini (5th generation and later, including A17 Pro)

What if I don’t want to buy a new iPhone?

If you want to continue using your older iPhone that isn’t supported by iOS 26, that’s fine. However, you’ll eventually miss out on security updates which could potentially put your phone at risk for malware and other threats. Additionally, some apps may stop working if they require a certain version of iOS or later. And, of course, you won’t be able to access the latest features iOS 26 offers.

Should I upgrade to iOS 18.7 or iOS 26?

When you first open Software Update in Settings, you’ll notice two different upgrade options: iOS 18.7 and iOS 26. Apple released the former to address security issues, so you can at least download that one if you’re unsure about all the big changes on iOS 26. It also gives you more time to wait for Apple to take care of any bugs on the new OS.

However, if you’re excited to finally have the Liquid Glass aesthetic on your phone and use all the new features iOS 26 has to offer, go ahead and install that one. After all, Apple had all summer to weed through the most problematic bugs during its beta phase and usually releases a new update shortly after the initial launch.

iOS 26 features to try out first

Liquid Glass design: Your home screen is getting revamped with new app icons, including dark mode and all-clear options. You’ll also notice buttons with a new floating design. Liquid Glass, in Apple’s terms, was designed to make all of the company’s operating systems more visually cohesive.

Phone app redesign: You can finally scroll through contacts, recent calls and voicemail messages all on one screen. It also comes with a new feature called Hold Assist that’ll notify you when an agent comes to the phone so you can avoid the elevator music.

Live Translate: iOS 26 brings the ability to have a conversation via phone call or text message with someone who speaks another language. Live Translate will translate your conversation in real time.

Polls feature: Coming to group messages in the Messages app, chat members can now create polls. This can help prevent the unwanted 30+ messages when it comes to deciding which restaurant you’re meeting at this weekend.

New lock screen options: More customizable iPhone lock screen options are available with iOS 26, including a cooler clock, 3D wallpaper effects, more widgets and better focus mode options.

Snooze longer (or shorter): Say goodbye to the 9-minute snooze setting in your alarms (if you want). You now have the option to change your snooze time from one to 15 minutes.

Fresh Camera app design: You’ll find the Camera app is simpler to navigate in iOS 26, with all the buttons and menus located in convenient spots. That means less swiping, more photo taking. Plus, there’s a new feature that tells you if your lens is too dirty.

Screenshot revamps: When you take a screenshot, you now have the option to search for the image on Google (maybe you’re looking for a sweater you saw on a celeb) and you can ask ChatGPT questions about the photo — all from the edit screen. It’s like a reverse image search but without all the hard work.

Amazon October Prime Day 2025: how to find the best deals

by admin September 19, 2025

Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days is one of the biggest shopping events of the year, and it’s returning October 7th and 8th. The two-day shopping affair will grant Prime members access to some of the best prices of the year on Amazon devices, as well as products from Sony, Sonos, Microsoft, Apple, Withings, and other well-known brands. This applies to items spanning a range of categories, including gaming peripherals, laptops, 4K TVs, phones, PC accessories, and more.

As always, you can count on us to publish only the best deals during Prime Big Deal Days — as well as any worthwhile ones featured at Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and other competing retailers. That said, if you want to be sure you catch any and all deals that are most important to you — or be among the first to know of certain price drops — we’ve compiled some helpful tools and advice.

Below, we’ve spelled out a few of our best deal-hunting tips, from how to use automated price trackers to the different ways you can set up your own personalized deal alerts. All of these methods and tools are free to use, and once you put in just a little bit of work, you can rest easy knowing that you don’t need to take much action until it comes time to make a purchase.

Use a price-tracking tool or deal aggregator

CamelCamelCamel’s extension helps you keep tabs on historical price trends with useful graphs like these. Image: CamelCamelCamel

CamelCamelCamel tracks the price of every product sold on Amazon and can send you alerts only when they reach the price that’s right for you. Once a product reaches the desired price you’ve set (or goes below it), you’ll get an email about it. CamelCamelCamel only works for products on Amazon, so you’ll need to use one of the other methods below if you want to track price movement at Walmart, Best Buy, Target, and other retailers.

To track prices and get alerts via email, you’ll first need to create a free account. We also suggest installing the site’s browser extension, called The Camelizer, which lets you see pricing trends on a product-by-product basis, and allows you to set your desired price without navigating away from Amazon. It’s fantastic and easy to use.

And, if you already have a wishlist saved on Amazon, you can import it into CamelCamelCamel.

Slickdeals allows you to set up custom alerts for specific keywords, though finding the right parameters can be a trial and error process. Screenshot: Slickdeals

Slickdeals aggregates some of the best deals around the internet, as discovered by its team and community of users. It’s a great place to find a curated set of deals on things you might be interested in. The site also allows you to create deal alerts based on keywords, but they work a little differently on Slickdeals than they do on the above sites.

You can type in a product name, like “Sonos Era 100” or a retailer’s name, and once it’s added to your list, you’ll be notified of a deal alert if it meets your criteria. You can set it to alert you to any deal related to your keyword, or you can filter out deals so that you’ll be notified if, for example, the deal is popular enough to make it to Slickdeals’ front page or earned a high rating from the community. Setting these keywords a little too broadly may result in frequent notification pings and emails, though, so you’ll need to use some discretion and find the right balance of how aggressively you want Slickdeals to notify you.

Unlike the Honey extension and The Camelizer, Keepa integrates historical pricing data directly into the Amazon product listing. Screenshot: Keepa

Keepa is another handy tool you can use to track and compare Amazon prices over time. Like CamelCamelCamel, Keepa provides charts that track pricing trends and will alert you when it finds a deal. You can also import any wishlists you’ve previously saved on Amazon.

Unlike CamelCamelCamel, however, you don’t necessarily need to create an account in order to track prices with Keepa. You just need to install the extension, and Keepa will automatically add a price history graph to supported product listings. The embedded extension features different tabs as well, one of which showcases pricing history and another that allows you to specify various pricing details. Once you’ve set your desired price, you’ll then receive price alerts via email, push notification, or RSS.

Set up deal alert notifications through Alexa or the Amazon app

If you’re a Prime member who owns a fourth-gen Echo speaker or a newer model, you can also request that Amazon send you deal notifications up to 24 hours ahead of time on products you’re interested in. Amazon can alert you of price drops on eligible products in your shopping cart or wishlist, as well as anything you’ve marked as “saved for later.” To enable the feature, tap More > Settings > Notifications in the Alexa app, and then tap Amazon Shopping. Then, scroll down to Shopping Recommendations and enable Deal Recommendations. Once done, you’ll receive a notification on both your device and your Echo speaker (the latter in the form of a yellow ring) notifying you of the deal.

Alternatively, you can sign up to receive deal alerts regarding products you’ve recently viewed in the Amazon Shopping app, as well as those related to your recent search history. If you’re a Prime member, you just need to navigate to the Prime Day event page in the mobile app between now and July 8th to create an alert. Once done, you’ll receive push notifications for any deal(s) you’ve subscribed to when the event begins. You can also just open the Amazon Shopping app and tap Settings > Notifications > Deals and Recommendations before toggling “Savings” and / or “Recommendations.”

Look for deals outside of Amazon

Prime Day is meant to show off Amazon’s huge retail presence, so, naturally, other retail chains take notice. Because of this, you can sometimes find better deals at retailers like Target, Walmart, and Best Buy. At the very least, they may be able to match Amazon’s pricing if you ask.

If Amazon’s upcoming sale doesn’t have everything you want or if you just want to make sure you’re getting the best deal, shop around a bit. In the past, Target, Walmart, and Best Buy have hosted their own events in an effort to counter Amazon. And as usual, you’ll be able to find all of our deals coverage in and outside of Amazon here.

We’re a discerning bunch here at The Verge, so don’t fret if you’re going into this without any prep. We’ll be corralling the best tech deals and keeping our coverage up to date in the run-up to the main event. So mark October 7th on your calendar, sign up for Amazon Prime and our new and improved Verge Deals newsletter, and maybe start putting aside a little spending cash.

Peacemaker season 2 makes a big change to Sasha Bordeaux’s DC comic book origins story, and some fans might not like it

by admin September 19, 2025

  • Peacemaker season 2 episode 5 has made its streaming debut
  • It puts a major twist to Sasha Bordeaux’s origins story in the comics
  • The change was necessary for one major reason

Peacemaker season 2 episode 5 has landed on HBO Max and other streaming services, and the show’s latest chapter makes a major change to Sasha Bordeaux’s backstory from the comics.

Until now, most viewers knew little about the ARGUS agent portrayed by Sol Rodriguez. But, thanks to a couple of key scenes in this season’s fifth entry, titled ‘Back to the Suture’, Bordeaux isn’t as much of an enigma as she’s been presented as.

Full spoilers immediately follow for Peacemaker season 2 episode 5, titled ‘Back to the Suture’.

This is the face that some fans might pull when they learn about Bordeaux’s altered backstory (Image credit: DC Studios/HBO Max)

The first major revelation about Bordeaux emerges during the stand-off between Chris Smith and the ARGUS agents trying to arrest him at Kupperberg Park. None of the assembled group have a clear shot on their target because Smith has taken Agent Clyne hostage and has draped them across his shoulders to use as a protective shield.

Cue Bordeaux’s intervention. Informing ARGUS chief Rick Flag Sr that Smith is locked into a turning pattern – essentially, Smith’s moving in a circle on the spot to keep tabs on the approaching personnel – she says she has a clear shot and, if she takes it, it’ll be fatal.

Yep, Bordeaux isn’t completely human (Image credit: DC Studios/HBO Max)

In a move that’ll surprise many viewers, it’s revealed Bordeaux is actually part-android; her robotic right eye and 0.002% miss rate calculation being the clear giveaways.

Luckily for Smith, Emilia Harcourt makes a last-second intervention that prevents Bordeaux from killing the titular anti-hero. Okay, he’s subdued, arrested and carted off to ARGUS headquarters to, as we later see, be heavily beaten by Flag Sr, but at least the metahuman known as Peacemaker isn’t actually dead. Hey, you take the wins where you can.

Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.

Anyway, back at ARGUS, Harcourt reunites with John Economos and persuades him to ‘book’ Smith so there’s an arrest record, which will prevent Flag Sr from making Smith ‘disappear’ – i.e. bumping him off.

It’s during this conversation that we learn more about Bordeaux, with Economos revealing she’s a cyborg. Continuing, Economos says that, following a near-fatal plane crash, ARGUS replaced half of her body, which had been mangled in said disaster, with machinery and other technology to save her life.

Why Sasha Bordeaux’s origin story needed to be changed in Peacemaker season 2

Some DC devotees might be wondering why Bordeaux’s backstory needed to be changed (Image credit: HBO Max/YouTube)

Bordeaux’s origin story in the DC Universe (DCU) isn’t wholly dissimilar to part of her backstory in the comics. Indeed, Bordeaux is turned into a type of cyborg known as OMAC (Omni Mind and Community or, to use the original abbreviation, Observational Metahuman Activity Construct). OMACs are humans who’ve been turned into robots by a virus created by Maxwell Lord to kill metahumans.

However, Bordeaux’s origins needed to be tweaked for Peacemaker season 2 – and, by proxy, the DCU – for one big reason: Batman.

In the comics, Bordeaux is initially introduced as a secret service agent-turned-private contractor who’s hired as the head of Bryce Wayne’s security team. Without getting into the nitty-gritty of her entire arc to date, Bordeaux *deep breath* learns Wayne is Batman, starts patrolling Gotham City alongside him, falls in love with the Caped Crusader, is co-framed for the murder of Wayne’s ex-girlfriend, almost dies in prison, joins the government agency known as Checkmate, rises through that group’s ranks, and eventually becomes said cyborg.

Sasha Bordeaux’s origins story in the DCU differs from her literary counterpart (Image credit: DC Comics)

Considering The Dark Knight hasn’t been fully introduced in the DCU yet – we know he’s already active, though, due to his silhouetted cameo in Creature Commandos episode 6 – a lot of heavy lifting would’ve been required on Peacemaker‘s part to explain Bordeaux’s comic-accurate backstory. In that sense, simplifying her origins in the DCU was the best option available to James Gunn and company.

This doesn’t mean Bordeaux couldn’t cross paths with The Dark Knight in another DCU Chapter One project. We already know that a Batman movie, currently titled The Brave and the Bold, is in early development at DC Studios. Speaking to TechRadar ahead of Peacemaker’s return, Rodriguez admitted she’d love to appear in The Brave and the Bold, but had no idea whether Gunn would include her as part of its cast.

Of course, in order to meet Batman, Bordeaux needs to survive the final three episodes of one of the best HBO Max shows’ second season. Given Gunn’s penchant for killing off characters willy-nilly, there’s no guarantee that she’ll make it to the end, either.

Anyway, what do you think about this reframing of Bordeaux’s origins tale? Does it work? Are you upset that it doesn’t follow her literary backstory ad verbatim? Let me know in the comments.

Weapons director says his Resident Evil movie will leave everything ‘intact’ from the games: ‘I’m not gonna steal Leon and put him in an original story’

by admin September 19, 2025

Zach Cregger is on a roll. The writer and director of 2022’s Barbarian and this year’s Weapons now has two solid horror hits under his belt, and is in pre-production on his next one: a Resident Evil movie planned for 2026.

That’s good news for Resident Evil fans who might otherwise be a bit wary about yet another new Resi movie—the film franchise was already rebooted once, just four years ago, with the thoroughly mid Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Cregger’s track record, though based on a small sample size (at least when it comes to feature films) is a good reason to be optimistic.

And for those wondering which game and characters this new Resi movie will be based on, it looks like the answer is: none of them.

Related articles

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cregger confirmed that while the 2026 film will take place in the Resident Evil universe, “It’s an entirely original story,” instead of being based on any one specific game. Cregger is also steering away from major Resident Evil characters like Leon S. Kennedy.

“I’m not gonna steal Leon and put him in an original story. I think that would be presumptuous,” Cregger told EW. “But I respect the games enough where I’m gonna tell a Resident Evil story in the Resident Evil canon that still leaves everything they love intact from the games, you know what I mean?”

I think I know what he means. When using a character people are already familiar with, like say Master Chief in the recent Halo TV series, you run the risk of disappointing people who have expectations of that character, like when you show his naked butt, or when he has sex. A safer and more creative approach is to handle it like the Fallout series, which creates mostly original characters and sets them loose in a familiar world.

Both Barbarian and Weapons are effective not just because they’re scary, but because they’re intriguing. By presenting the story of both films from the perspective of different characters and jumping around in time, we don’t get all the information in a linear fashion, which gives both movies a fun sense of mystery. At other times we get information before certain characters do, too, and then we’re left dreading the horrible things we know are coming their way.

Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.

I’m curious if and how Cregger will use similar methods in his Resident Evil movie.

“I think that when you see it, you’ll understand how I can be obsessed with original ideas and still make a movie that is an IP-based thing,” Cregger said. “I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense now, but I hope that it will later.”

Cregger’s Resident Evil movie is scheduled to be released, wow, exactly one year from today, on September 18, 2026. Confirmed in the cast is Austin Abrams, who played the role of James, the drug-addict, in Weapons, and Paul Walter Hauser, who played Ed in this year’s The Naked Gun and Mole Man in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

xAI’s new gas turbine facility gets halfway to Elon Musk’s 1-gigawatt ‘AI factory’ goal

by admin September 19, 2025

xAI is moving faster than anyone expected on its power strategy. According to a new report from SemiAnalysis, Elon Musk’s AI startup already has 460MW of natural gas generation either installed or under construction, split between its Memphis campus and a new site across the border in Southaven, Mississippi.

The numbers check out against state filings and local reporting. Shelby County granted xAI a permit in July for 15 stationary gas turbines at its Paul R. Lowry Road facility in Memphis after months of wrangling with environmental groups, which alleged that dozens of turbines had been running without proper approval. In Mississippi, regulators issued a 12-month authorization to operate gas turbines at 2875 Stanton Road, a property xAI acquired from Duke Energy this summer, while the company builds out a permanent plant.

Equipment lists emerging from legal disclosures align with SemiAnalysis’s reporting of 12 SMT-130 turbines, rated at roughly 16MW apiece, on the Memphis side, and seven Titan 350 units in Southaven, each capable of more than 35MW. Together, that brings xAI’s on-site capacity close to half a gigawatt, or roughly the output of a midsize utility plant, stood up in less than a year.

xAI now has 460 MW of natural gas turbines installed and either operating or under construction. This includes 12 SMT-130 turbines at Colossus-1 and 7 Titan-350 turbines in Mississippi, located right across from Colossus-2. @elonmusk and @BrentM_SpaceX chose Mississippi due to… pic.twitter.com/dCTYjfK7oQSeptember 17, 2025

A single Nvidia GB200 NVL72 rack is modeled at around 120-1302kW. Even after factoring in cooling and overhead, 460MW of generation translates to headroom for nearly 3,000 NVL72 racks, which is more than 200,000 GPUs in total. If xAI succeeds in doubling that to a full gigawatt, it would dwarf most hyperscale campuses in terms of concentrated GPU capacity.

xAI’s choice of turbine suggests a sense of urgency behind the project. Solar’s SMT-130 and Titan 350 packages are containerized modules designed for rapid deployment, essentially acting as bridge power while xAI transitions to the larger Southaven site. That speed helps sidestep the years-long queue for new grid interconnects, but also explains the geographic shuffle — Tennessee pushback slowed the Memphis approvals, so xAI pivoted to Mississippi, where regulators moved faster.

Compared with Microsoft and Amazon, which are experimenting with 100-200MW on-site projects, xAI’s goal of leaping straight to a gigawatt sets its power strategy apart from anything else. None of this means xAI is home free. The Memphis permit is already under appeal, and the Southaven authorization is temporary. Critics argue the company is prioritizing speed over compliance, which is a familiar criticism for Musk’s ventures.

The Land Bridge You’ve Never Heard Of

by admin September 19, 2025

For many of us, when we think of land bridges, we tend to think of the Bering Land Bridge (actually more of a swamp), which ancient humans traversed to reach North America from modern-day Siberia during the last Ice Age. But there may have been another, crucial stretch of land that aided early human migration—this time, far across the continent, on the Anatolian coast.

That’s the major new finding from a team of Turkish archeologists who have uncovered over 100 stone artifacts from ten different sites along the peninsula. They indicate that a land bridge, now underwater, had once existed between the western edge of Asia and Europe, enabling humans to move between these regions. If their theory holds, it would reveal a previously unknown chapter in the history of human migration at a critical moment in our evolution and development as a species.

An unexplored prehistoric region

“This study explores the Paleolithic potential of Ayvalık, a region in western Anatolia that has remained largely unexamined in Pleistocene archaeology,” the researchers wrote in their study, which was published Friday in the Journal of Island and Coastal Archaeology. “These findings reveal a previously undocumented Paleolithic presence and establish Ayvalık as a promising locus for future research on early human dispersals in the northeastern Aegean.”

The Paleolithic Period—around 2.6 million to 12,000 years ago—and the Pleistocene Epoch—around 2.5 million to 11,700 years ago—refer to roughly the same stretch of time. The former is an anthropological term, while the latter is a geological term.

During the last Ice Age (between around 120,000 and 11,500 years ago), Earth’s landscape looked much different than today. Besides gargantuan amounts of ice, the sea level then was significantly lower. Ayvalık’s islands and peninsulas, for example, would have been part of a single stretch of land connecting Anatolia and Europe.

An unforgettable moment of discovery

Still, scholars have long believed that Homo sapiens mostly reached Europe from Africa by traveling through the Levant and the Balkans. But the newly discovered tools, indicate that people were present in Ayvalık’s bygone landscapes. The researchers found Paleolithic hand axes, cleavers, and Levallois flake tools (stone implements that had sharp edges and were likely used as knives). The team argues that the findings offer an alternative narrative of early human migration.

“The presence of these objects in Ayvalık is particularly significant, as they provide direct evidence that the region was part of wider technological traditions shared across Africa, Asia, and Europe,” Göknur Karahan, an archeologist from Hacettepe University, said in a statement.

“It was a truly unforgettable moment for us. Holding the first tools in our hands was both emotional and inspiring,” Karahan added.

Substantive artifact dating, stratigraphic excavations, and reconstructions of the ancient environment will be crucial to determining whether their theory is correct, including possibly searching for artifacts on the bottom of the Aegean sea.

iOS 26 Brings All These New Ringtones to Your iPhone

by admin September 18, 2025

Apple released iOS 26 on Monday, a few months after the company announced it at the June Worldwide Developers Conference. The update brings call screening, new ringtones and lots of hidden feature for your iPhone. It also brings seven new ringtones to your device.

Many of the new ringtones are remixed versions of the Reflection ringtone. One version includes what sounds like woodwind instruments, while another sounds like a synthwave song you’d hear in Cyberpunk 2077.

Here are all the latest ringtones that Apple could bring to your iPhone this year and what they sound like.

Don’t miss any of our unbiased tech content and lab-based reviews. Add CNET as a preferred Google source on Chrome.

All the latest ringtones

You can find all the new ringtones by going to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone.

There are seven total new ringtones, but six of them are remixes of Reflections, the default ringtone of iOS 18. If you tap Reflection in the Ringtone menu, a dropdown menu unfurls to reveal these new ringtones.

  • Buoyant
  • Dreamer
  • Pond
  • Pop
  • Reflected
  • Surge

The standout ringtone for me is Dreamer. It’s about 45 seconds long and if I picked this as my ringtone I’d listen to it all the way through each time someone called. For a ringtone it’s a fun track and when I first heard it I was waiting for someone like Wiz Khalifa to start singing a few bars.

There’s also a new ringtone called Little Bird. It’s a new option you can find in the ringtone list.
