YouTube Thinks AI Is Its Next Big Bang

Google figured out early on that video would be a great addition to its search business, so in 2005 it launched Google Video. Focused on making deals with the entertainment industry for second-rate content, and overly cautious on what users could upload, it flopped. Meanwhile, a tiny startup run by a handful of employees working above a San Mateo, California, pizzeria was exploding, simply by letting anyone upload their goofy videos and not worrying too much about who held copyrights to the clips. In 2006, Google snapped up that year-old company, figuring it would sort out the IP stuff later. (It did.) Though the $1.65 billion purchase price for YouTube was about a billion dollars more than its valuation, it was one of the greatest bargains ever. YouTube is now arguably the most successful video property in the world. It’s an industry leader in music and podcasting, and more than half of its viewing time is now on living room screens. It has paid out over $100 billion to creators since 2021. One estimate from MoffettNathanson analysts cited by Variety is that if it were a separate company, it might be worth $550 billion.

Now the service is taking what might be its biggest leap yet, embracing a new paradigm that could change its essence. I’m talking, of course, about AI. Since YouTube is still a wholly owned subsidiary of AI-obsessed Google, it’s not surprising that its anniversary product announcements this week touted AI features that will let creators use AI to enhance or produce videos. After all, Google Deepmind’s Veo 3 technology was YouTube’s for the taking. Ready or not, the video camera ultimately will be replaced by the prompt. This means a rethinking of YouTube’s superpower: authenticity.

YouTube’s Big Bang

I had that shift in mind when I recently interviewed YouTube CEO Neal Mohan at his office at YouTube’s San Bruno, California, headquarters. Mohan took over as CEO in 2023 when his boss, Susan Wojcicki, left her post due to a fatal cancer. But first we chat a bit about the company’s history. Mohan reminds me that his own connection with the service began even before he joined Google in 2008, after his ad company DoubleClick merged with the search giant. He was struck by how the YouTube founders were first with a revelation that, he says, remains the core of the service. “It was not just that people were interested in sharing short clips about themselves and that it was done without a gatekeeper,” he says, “but that people were interested in watching them. That was the big bang inflection point. Our mission is to give everyone a voice and show them the world.”

Critics of Google’s power often argue that not only the public but also YouTube itself might benefit from a split from the mother company. Just think what the world’s biggest video company could do if it were truly independent. Mohan, a self-admitted Google loyalist, disagrees. “I don’t believe YouTube would be where it is if it weren’t part of Google,” he says. He says that being part of a giant company allowed YouTube to make long-term bets on things like streaming and podcasting. When I ask whether YouTube might be even more innovative on its own, he reminds me that YouTube has been sufficiently innovative to challenge legacy media in things like live sports while fending off challenges from competitors focusing on the creator economy.

YouTube has an advantage in breadth that Tiktok and Reels can’t dream of … “everything from a 15-second short to a 15-minute traditional long-form YouTube video to a 15-hour livestream and everything in between,” Mohan crows.

It’s currently pressing another advantage: Google’s AI technology. The announcements this week range from fun features like putting you or your friends’ bodies into videos showing astonishing acrobatic feats or allowing podcasters to make instant television shows from their audio conversations by having AI create visuals that resonate with the content of the chatter. Mohan says that, in a sense, AI is just the latest enhancement of the service. “When YouTube was born 20 years ago it was about using technology for more people to have their voice heard,” he says. “With AI, it’s the same core principle—how do we use technology to democratize creation?”

Trump administration to impose a $100,000-per-year fee for H-1B visas

President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order, which adds a $100,000 fee to H-1B visa applications. It’s not a one-time fee either: The New York Times has reported that companies will have to pay $100,000 a year for any employee it brings over to the US on the visa for up to six years. The Secretary of Homeland Security will restrict approval for visa applications unless accompanied by the fee, though the rule “allows case-by-case exemptions if [it’s] in the national interest.” This new requirement will only apply to new visa applicants, a White House official told The Times, and it will likely face legal challenges. If it does get implemented, though, it could deal a huge blow to the tech industry.

While several sectors in the US use the program to bring skilled workers into the country, some of its biggest beneficiaries are in the tech sector. According to the US Citizen and Immigration Services, Amazon has the most number (over 10,000) of workers on the H-1B visa. Microsoft, Meta, Apple and Google are also in the top ten list of employers that brought over H-1B workers, with between 4,000 and 5,500 employees on the visa. Walmart, Intel, IBM and NVIDIA have a considerable number of H-1B workers, as well. As TechCrunch has noted, Elon Musk, who used to be close to the president, came over to the US on the H-1B, as did Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger.

In the White House’s announcement, the administration explained that some employers have abused the H-1B visa to “artificially suppress wages,” creating a disadvantageous market for Americans. “Information technology (IT) firms in particular have prominently manipulated the H-1B system, significantly harming American workers in computer-related fields,” the announcement read.

Trump has also signed an order for a new visa program called the “Gold Card,” which the administration says will prioritize “the admission of aliens who will affirmatively benefit the Nation, including successful entrepreneurs, investors, and businessmen and women.” It’s an expedited immigrant visa program, available to anybody who can afford the “requisite gift” the government asks for. Specifically, the gift made to the US Department of Commerce must be “$1 million for an individual donating on his or her own behalf and $2 million for a corporation or similar entity donating on behalf of an individual.”

Windows 11 is adding another Copilot button nobody asked for

Have enough Copilot buttons in your life? No you don’t — have another one! This one pops up in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview when mousing over an open app in your taskbar; it lets you share the contents with Copilot Vision.

Want to know who is celebrating in that dogpile on the mound, or dig a little deeper on that sculpture you took a photo of? Just click that “Share with Copilot” button that pops up in the window preview. Copilot Vision scans what’s on your screen, analyzes it, and lets you discuss the contents of the window with Microsoft’s AI chatbot to get more context, including offering tutorials.

Of course, it doesn’t exactly seem like Windows users are clamoring for more Copilot in their lives. There’s already buttons popping up in Microsoft Paint, Notepad, in the taskbar, on your keyboard, and right on the front of some PCs. There’s even another, more useful Copilot feature in the same Windows 11 preview that translates on-screen text. Microsoft does say it’s just “trying out this taskbar capability”, so don’t be shocked if it gets axed in an upcoming build before it actually ships to regular users.

How to share your Gemini Gems custom AI experts with all your friends

AI chatbots with a specific focus are a great way to skip having to explain what you want to do with an AI chatbot. Google created the Gemini Gems setup so that you’d be able to make and reuse those specialized chatbots whenever you want. Now, you can share your custom-made Gems with friends, family, or anyone else you share a link with.

All you have to do is hit the “Share” button on your custom Gem. That way, you can share, say, your toddler sleep schedule assistant or meal planner for someone in a rush, in the same way you’d share a Google Doc. They can view it, clone it, or even tweak it with your permission, as it’s basically Google Drive for AI assistants.

The Gems are otherwise the same, but they’re now portable. Consider how much of your digital life runs on shared docs, and then imagine if your AI helpers could do the same.

Shared Gems

Functionally, this could reduce time spent retyping or re-explaining how to use AI to do a task. It might also surface use cases that people wouldn’t have built themselves.

If it sounds like a familiar idea, that’s because it’s not dissimilar to what ChatGPT offers with custom GPTs, except those get published to the whole world.

It’s more efficient than the manual approach, wherein people take long prompts from Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity and share them on Reddit or other social media platforms. The difference is that Gems are persistent and can hold files, rules, and settings you’d typically have to reconfigure every session.

There are limits. Some Gems aren’t eligible for sharing, especially if they contain private uploads or link to sensitive data sources. And even when you do share a Gem, the recipient may need access to the files inside, like if it uses a personal Google Doc. The system mostly warns you when this might be a problem, but not always with excellent specificity.

And while sharing Custom GPTs has been an option for a while, sharing Gems is less tied to one platform and offers Drive-style collaboration settings. Gemini’s ability to piggyback on the infrastructure millions already use could give it an edge in that regard.

Mostly, though, it means those who enjoy making Gemini Gems can share them with whoever they wish, and those who like using them but don’t want to make them might find some new favorites without having to ask what people wrote to get Gemini to perform.

FF14 is getting a baby Seikret minion as part of its Monster Hunter Wilds collab, and I will fistfight Arkveld alone for it

I’m not going to try convincing you to play through ~500 hours of Final Fantasy 14 for a Monster Hunter Wilds event. It’s easily one of my favorite games, but if you’re not into the story as it stands, then the MMORPG isn’t worth it. I will, however, show you this freakishly adorable baby Seikret minion revealed with the collab rewards and walk away. Whatever happens after is not my business.

The baby Seikret (along with a Vigorwasp minion) is headed to the MMORPG in October when FF14 kicks off its collaboration with Monster Hunter Wilds. I know some of you are disappointed it’s not a Palico, and I get it; they’re cute. But we already got one when Rathalos landed in Stormblood’s crossover with Monster Hunter: World, and you can still unlock the Palico (or Poogie) to this day.

Anyway, look at this guy. An absolutely useless, flightless little chunk of a bird with not a thought behind those eyes. I’ll fight Arkveld all by myself to get one.

The latest update to FF14’s Monster Hunter Wilds crossover site detailed a few other rewards, too, along with more on Arkveld’s trial, The Windward Wilds. You’ll need to reach item level 725 to square up with the wyvern in its normal encounter, and, just like Rathalos, the White Wraith will scale up the difficulty in The Windward Wilds (Extreme). That one also raises the item level requirement to 740.

For those playing catch-up, you’ll need to gear up in more than just main story job gear to hit the 725 requirement, but collecting tomestone pieces shouldn’t add much time to the grind. Hitting item level 740 requires a few more current pieces, but crafted gear makes for an easy shortcut if you’re in a pinch with gil to burn.

Apparently, that’s not all there is to it, though I’m guessing Square’s “and more” tease means a full gallery of weapons plus the usual extras, like orchestrion rolls for player estates.

That’s fine, though. We could leave it at that, and I’m satisfied as long as I get a baby Seikret. You got the Poogie by completing The Great Hunt (Extreme) once with an RNG blessing, or five times if you had to grind for Ratholas’ scales. I’m the loser always trading 99 tokens for a reward anyway, so I’ll see y’all in party finder if that’s the case for this little guy.

‘Night of the Reaper’ Is a Retro Babysitter Slasher With a Mystery Twist

Night of the Reaper begins with a familiar slasher movie scenario: a babysitter being stalked by a killer. The masked menace puts on a big show of toying with her, leaving creepy notes that almost feel like a prank until the danger gets all too real.

It’s a freaky opening sequence that signals director and co-director Brandon Christensen (Still/Born, Z) is well familiar with the horror tropes his movie is leaning into—and you can tell he knows his audience will pick up on them too.

Night of the Reaper‘s main reference point is, obviously, Halloween, the mothership of all babysitter horror movies. It’s set in the early 1980s—the era of Pat Benatar bangers on MTV—a little later than 1978’s Halloween. But advancing a few years means access to slightly more advanced technology, especially camcorders, a key plot device as well as a stylistic influence. The opening credits crackle with static “tracking” lines, and VHS tapes are important throughout.

The main events of the film pick up some time after the babysitter’s demise. We meet main character Deena (Gen V‘s Jessica Clement) as she’s walking down a quiet street festooned with Halloween decorations; the electronic score further underlines the Laurie Strode comparisons. Deena’s home from college, dutifully having what’s clearly a strained visit with her parents. When her high-school bestie, who’s still living in their hometown, gets sick, Deena agrees to help her out by stepping in to watch the local sheriff’s young son for the night.

Here we go again, the viewer might assume—and indeed, Night of the Reaper does seem to be setting up a similar fate for Deena as the girl in the opening scene. But there’s also a parallel storyline to unwind, as Sheriff Arnold (Ryan Robbins) starts receiving packages that lead him on a macabre scavenger hunt.

It seems more than possible that whoever killed the girl in the opening is back for more sinister taunting. Arnold remarks at one point, “Someone’s trying to tell me something.” But exactly what that message is (and who’s sending it) forms Night of the Reaper‘s central mystery.

As Night of the Reaper progresses, the tension and dread build in both stories. Deena’s gig watching little Max (Max Christensen) devolves from a playful game of hide-and-seek to an escalation of terror as doors slowly creak open, objects get rearranged by unseen hands, and a shadowy figure lurks in the woods just beyond the yard.

Sheriff Arnold, meanwhile, freely engages in some jaw-droppingly unprofessional conduct as he puzzles together a string of clues, especially once he realizes the babysitter’s cold case isn’t the only crime on the table. There are also hints at another death in the recent past that’s far more personal to him.

To share more about the plot twists that follow would compromise much of what makes Night of the Reaper enjoyable, but it’s not a spoiler to say it’s more of a horror whodunit than, say, something that drags its babysitting heroine into wild House of the Devil territory.

Halloween is the main influence here, but found-footage horror also makes its mark, as do other slasher series, including Scream. If the final reveals get a little too talky as Christensen hurries to explain all that’s come before, you have to appreciate the effort to fill in as many blanks as possible.

Standout performances in the cast come from Clement as the resourceful Deena, as well as Summer H. Howell—soon to be seen as Carrie White in Mike Flanagan’s Carrie series—who makes the most of her brief screen time as the first victim.

Night of the Reaper streams on Shudder starting today, September 19.

Adaptive Power in iOS 26 Could Boost Your iPhone Battery Life, but It’s Not on All Models

When Apple announced the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air earlier this month, it touted improved battery life across the board and “all-day” battery for the iPhone Air, which has a physically smaller battery to fit inside its thin design. Some of that is due to physically larger batteries, but a new feature called Adaptive Power in iOS 26 is also contributing. And it’s available on any iPhone capable of running Apple Intelligence.

Currently, the iPhone uses as much power as it needs to perform its tasks. You can extend the battery life by doing a number of things, such as decreasing screen brightness and turning off the always-on display. Or, if your battery level is starting to get dire, you can activate Low Power Mode, which reduces background activity like fetching mail and downloading data in addition to those screen adjustments. Low Power Mode also kicks in automatically when the battery level reaches 20%.

If Low Power Mode is the hammer that knocks down power consumption, Adaptive Power is the scalpel that intelligently trims energy savings here and there as needed. Based on Apple’s description that accompanies the control, the savings will be felt mostly in power-hungry situations such as recording videos, editing photos or perhaps even playing games:

“When your battery usage is higher than usual, iPhone can extend your battery life by making performance adjustments, such as lowering display brightness, allowing some activities to take longer, or turning on Low Power Mode at 20%.”

Apple says Adaptive Power takes about a week to analyze your usage behavior before it begins actively working. It works in the background without needing any management on your part. The iPhone user guide describes it as follows: “It uses on-device intelligence to predict when you’ll need extra battery power based on your recent usage patterns, then makes performance adjustments to help your battery last longer.”

Which iPhone models can use Adaptive Power?

The feature uses AI to monitor and choose when its power-saving measures should be activated, so that means only phones compatible with Apple Intelligence get the feature. These are the models that have the option:

• iPhone 17
• iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max
• iPhone Air
• iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus
• iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
• iPhone 16e
• iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max

Although some iPad and Mac models support Apple Intelligence, the feature is only available on iPhones.

How to turn Adaptive Power on

On the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air, Adaptive Power is on by default. For other models, you must opt in to use it. In iOS 26, you’ll find the Adaptive Power toggle in Settings > Battery > Power Mode. If you want to be alerted when the feature is active, turn on the Adaptive Power Notifications option.

Adaptive Power sounds like an outgrowth of Gaming Mode, introduced in iOS 18, which routes all available processing and graphics power to the frontmost app and pauses other processes in order to deliver the best experience possible — at the notable expense of battery life.

What does this mean for your charging habits?

Although we all want as much battery life as possible all the time, judging by the description, it sounds as if Adaptive Power’s optimizations will not always be active, even if you leave the feature on. “When your battery usage is higher than usual” could include a limited number of situations. Still, considering that according to a CNET survey, 61% of people upgrade their phones because of battery life, a feature such as Adaptive Power could extend the longevity of their phones just by updating to iOS 26.

I also wonder whether slightly adjusting display brightness could be disruptive, but in my experience so far, it hasn’t been noticeable. Because the feature also selectively de-prioritizes processing tasks, the outward effects will likely be minimal.

We’ll get a better idea about how well Adaptive Power works as more people adopt iOS 26 and start buying new iPhone models. Also, remember that shortly after installing a major software update, it’s common to experience worse battery life as the system optimizes data in the background; Apple went so far as to remind customers that it’s a temporary side effect.

Donald Trump Is Saying There’s a TikTok Deal. China Isn’t

US efforts to ban TikTok started during Trump’s first term in 2020. Months before he left office, Trump threatened to ban TikTok and another Chinese app WeChat. The Biden administration rescinded Trump’s executive orders on the topic but continued to scrutinize TikTok. The US congress eventually passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications (PAFACA) Act in April 2024. This gave TikTok two options: divest from its Chinese ownership before January 19, 2025, or risk a federal ban.

The app briefly went dark in the US ahead of the deadline, then reappeared on app stores less than 24 hours later and resumed services for US users.

Since Trump returned to power, Washington’s stance on TikTok appears to have shifted. Trump has become a steadfast advocate for saving the app, which he credited with helping him win the support of young voters. He has repeatedly extended the deadline set by the PAFACA Act, most recently to December 16, 2025, which some experts have criticized as illegal.

The deal that is reportedly being proposed by the Trump administration could meet the requirements set by the PAFACA Act, says Alan Rozenshtein, an associate professor of law at the University of Minnesota Law School. But the fact remains that the deadline has been extended multiple times and American companies like Oracle and Apple have not paid fines for continuing to service the app.

“The way the law was written, the companies were liable for doing business with TikTok, up to $5,000 per US user. So if there are 170 million TikTok users [in the US], and they all used the platform in the last nine months, and each of these platforms and each of these companies has accrued potentially up to nearly $1 trillion in liability,” Rozenshtein claims. He notes that it’s unlikely the Trump administration will collect that fine.

Some experts in Washington believe the deal does not solve the perceived national security issues that sparked talk of a ban in the first place. “In plain terms, ownership change without technical separation is a violation of the law,” says Craig Singleton, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a DC-based think tank. He compares the deal to a “joint custody” rather than the “divorce” that the PAFACA Act required.

The Chinese government has stressed in recent statements that the deal will include concessions from the US on non-TikTok issues, such as barriers to cross-border investment. “The US side needs to provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese investors,” the Chinese readout of the call between Trump and Xi says.

If Beijing exchanges the TikTok deal for better trade terms, ByteDance and its original investors may lose out. “It’s not great. But it’s still better than being completely shut down and losing entirely to Meta. It’s probably like a C-minus outcome,” says Rui Ma, founder of Tech Buzz China, a research firm focused on Chinese tech.

Elon Musk’s Neuralink plans a brain speech trial in October

Neuralink plans to begin another US clinical trial in October, using the implant to translate thoughts into text. The study will be held through an FDA investigational device exemption. “If you’re imagining saying something, we would be able to pick that up,” Neuralink president DJ Seo said this week.

The idea is to help people with speech impairments communicate through thought. Neuralink is among the companies testing implants that help patients control a computer with their minds. That can include using virtual keyboards. Translating thought directly from the patient’s speech cortex could speed things up by cutting the middleman.

The company already has five other clinical trials underway. The first was in the US. It has since added studies in Canada, the UK and the United Arab Emirates.

Neuralink’s plans for people with severe impairments sound like utopian sci-fi. Regardless of anything else, success in this field could be beyond life-changing for them. Still, this is a commercial company in which Elon Musk owns a majority share. Neuralink’s long-term plans are where it’s hard not to worry a little.

“We’re currently envisioning a world where in about three to four years, there will be someone who’s otherwise healthy who’s going to get a Neuralink,” Seo said. The company president hinted at what that might look like. “We think that it’s actually possible to demonstrate abilities to speak to the latest AI model, or LLM models, at the speed of thought, even faster than how you’re speaking, and being able to potentially get that information back through your AirPods, effectively closing the loop,” he said.

Our world today has revealed where things can go wrong when we turn too much of our humanity over to technology. You can start with smartphone addiction and social media algorithms and quickly move on to (alleged) AI-enabled suicide. Consumer brain implants can conjure the darkest images painted by our great sci-fi works. Think Neuromancer, Star Trek’s Borg or Cyberpunk 2077‘s cyberware.

Add what we know about Musk’s ideas about politics, and it’s hard not to be at least a little cynical. Is it too much to hope that the technology will advance enough to help those in need, but not so much that it devours humanity?

Microsoft is raising prices on Xbox consoles in the US again

Microsoft is raising the prices of its Xbox Series S / X consoles in the US next month. The Xbox Series X will be priced at $649.99 in the US starting October 3rd, up from its existing $599.99 price. The Xbox Series S will move to $399.99, up from $379.99.

Microsoft blames the price hikes on “changes in the macroeconomic environment,” which is a lot of words to say: tariffs. Xbox console pricing outside the US will remain the same. Thankfully, pricing for controllers and headsets will remain in the same in the US.

The price rises mean Xbox Series S consoles will increase by $20, Xbox Series X consoles by $50, and the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition Xbox Series X is increasing by $70 all the way up to $799.99.

Here’s the full list of price increases in the US:

Microsoft only just raised the prices of its Xbox products worldwide in May, with price hikes to the Xbox Series S / X consoles, controllers, and headsets. Those previous price increases already bumped the Xbox Series X up by $100, and the Xbox Series S by $80. Coupled with today’s announcement, that means the Xbox Series X has increased in price in the US by $150 and the Series S by $100 in just six months.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition originally debuted nearly a year ago at $599.99, and it’s now about to be $799.99 — a $200 increase in just a year. Microsoft’s latest price increases are the second this year, following initial price hikes in 2023.
