How Coinbase Protects Data from North Korean Hackers

by admin August 24, 2025

In an interview with Stripe’s John Collison, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong shared details on tactics North Korean hackers use to infiltrate Coinbase. Attempts by deceptive agents to bribe the exchange’s support team or get jobs at Coinbase resulted in stricter security standards. What did we learn about hackers from the DPRK?

Summary

  • In a new interview, Brian Armstrong emphasized that North Korea is trying to infiltrate tech companies with a large number of its agents disguised as remote IT workers.
  • Armstrong said it feels like around 500 new agents graduate from special schools every quarter.
  • According to Armstrong, threat actors are trying to bribe the Coinbase support team with hundreds of thousands of dollars to get private info.
  • Coinbase had to tighten up its security standards while hiring new people. Only the fingerprinted employees with U.S. citizenship and family in-country can access sensitive info.
  • Previously, investigators found out that the DPRK is constantly trying to get its agents hired in tech companies so they can steal cryptocurrency there. Stolen crypto is thought to be used as funding for the North Korean nuclear program.

North Korea takeaways from Armstrong’s interview

On Aug. 20, 2025, the Stripe YouTube channel released a new video. In it, Collison and Armstrong, who are the heads of Stripe and Coinbase, have a conversation about notable trends in the cryptocurrency space.

Collison asked Armstrong what the general tech public does not appreciate about the cybercrime landscape, and Armstrong’s nearly immediate response was “a lot of North Korean agents are trying to work at these companies,” most of the time remotely.

Armstrong said that while companies are working with law enforcement and get notified about some candidates as “known actors,” it feels like 500 more agents graduate from “some kind of school” in the DPRK each quarter, and infiltrating tech companies is their “whole job.”

He emphasized that he does not blame individuals for becoming agents:

“In many of these cases, it’s not the individual person’s fault. Their families will be coerced or detained if they don’t cooperate. So actually, they’re the victim as well in many cases.”

During online job interviews, the DPRK agents usually have some kind of a coach around who assists them, so Coinbase employees have to demand that candidates turn on the camera to make sure they are talking with a real person and no one is nearby to give instructions.

If an employee needs to access any sensitive system, they are required to come to the U.S. in person for orientation. Coinbase limits access to sensitive data by allowing only fingerprinted employees with U.S. citizenship and family in-country. Such a strict approach is dictated by increased security concerns associated with the DPRK infiltration attempts.

Another concern voiced by Armstrong during the interview is the cases when threat actors were trying to bribe Coinbase support team agents, offering hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for smuggling in personal phones, taking screen photos, and sharing other types of data. To address the risk of leaks resulting from bribery, Coinbase had to increase control over the support team and move customer support offices to the U.S. and Europe. Armstrong said:

“[We] really started to make a deterrent in the sense of, when we catch people doing this – and we red‑team it consistently — we don’t walk them out the door — they go to jail. We try to make it very clear that you’re destroying the rest of your life by taking this, even if you think it’s some life‑changing amount of money, it’s not worth going to jail.”

Another measure is putting out a $20 million bounty for information that could help arrest or convict attackers. Armstrong emphasized that Coinbase is not only going after insiders but targets the threat actors themselves.

What is known about hackers from the DPRK?

During the same interview, Armstrong said that “DPRK is very interested in stealing crypto,” and this statement cannot be underestimated. According to a blockchain analyst company, Elliptic, the hacking of a crypto exchange, ByBit, by North Korean hackers was the biggest heist in history. Hackers from the infamous Lazarus Group associated with the DPRK managed to steal $1.46 billion in crypto assets. Since 2017, the DPRK has stolen over $5 billion in crypto.  Allegedly, 40% of the North Korean military’s nuclear program is funded via stolen cryptocurrencies. Over $300 million of money stolen from ByBit was probably used to fund nuclear weapons.

The North Korean hackers use diverse tactics to steal crypto and launder money. On Aug. 13, 2025, a prominent anonymous crypto sleuth using the ZachXBT handle on X shared documents leaked from the North Korean hackers who pretended to be IT workers in Western companies.

The leak revealed that five agents have been operating 30 fake identities and had bogus LinkedIn and Upwork IT worker accounts. They were communicating mostly in English and using various Google services to conduct their operations, buying accounts on job platforms, serial security numbers, etc. Some of the screenshots of the browser history of these agents reveal low levels of tech competency. According to ZachXBT, hiring a North Korean agent is “100% negligence.” In his opinion, figuring out that the candidate is a DPRK agent is not that hard.

However, despite the fact that the DPRK agents are bad at work and get fired quickly, they find new jobs; usually, several agents are taking positions at the same company simultaneously, and eventually manage to steal crypto.

6/ I am closely monitoring five other larger clusters of DPRK ITWs but will not share those addresses publicly since they are active.

One thing to note is the number does not include exploits conducted by them on projects (LND, ChainSaw, Favrr, Munchables, Dream, etc)

They… pic.twitter.com/kIbFewIM8b

— ZachXBT (@zachxbt) July 2, 2025

North Korean hackers used to launder stolen assets via Binance and Coinbase, but had to find other ways as these exchanges increased KYC/AML scrutiny. They developed a chain of over-the-counter brokers. Also, Korean hackers use crypto mixer platforms that obfuscate transaction data. In relation to the Lazarus Group activity, the U.S. Treasury named such mixer platforms as Sinbad, Tornado Cash, and Blender.

According to ZachXBT, public company Circle, which is a prime competitor of Tether, is neglecting the use of its stablecoin USDC in the DPRK-related money laundering operations, being the only company that didn’t freeze flagged wallets when ZachXBT brought up the connection. The company eventually froze the addresses involved in hacking months later. The Circle CEO, Jeremy Allaire, responded to ZachXBT’s criticism by saying that the company would not freeze addresses solely based on ZachXBT’s investigation. The request from the law enforcement was necessary.

5/ USDC was sent directly from Circle accounts to three addresses in this cluster.

It’s 1 hop from an address blacklisted by Tether in April 2023 tied to Hyon Sop Sim.

Other DPRK ITW clusters currently have decent sized quantities of USDC sitting.

I think it’s misleading… pic.twitter.com/vGCcMZX6wL

— ZachXBT (@zachxbt) July 2, 2025

ZachXBT accuses Circle of allowing Korean hackers to use USDC so that the company will earn via transaction fees. Similar claims were made against the MetaMask wallet, which was allegedly involved in the DPRK money laundering operations.

While ZachXBT dismisses the sophistication of the DPRK agents when they try to infiltrate tech companies, Coinbase has its reasons to be cautious. Given that Coinbase is responsible for the custody of over 2.2 million bitcoins, which is more than 10% of the total supply, extensive control over the works may not seem unnecessary.

by admin August 24, 2025

The rates of all top 10 coins are rising today, according to CoinStats.

BTC chart by CoinStats

BTC/USD

The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has gone up by almost 3% since yesterday.

On the hourly chart, the rate of BTC is near the local support of $115,189. If a bounce back does not happen by the end of the day, one can expect a level breakout, followed by a further drop to the $114,500-$115,000 zone.

On the bigger time frame, the picture is less clear. The price of the main crypto has failed to maintain yesterday’s rise after the bullish bar closure.

If nothing changes, there is a chance of a test of the $114,000 mark shortly.

From the midterm point of view, the rate of BTC has made a false breakout of the $111,919 level. The volume is low, which means traders might not see increased volatility soon. In this case, sideways trading in the range of $114,000-$118,000 is the more likely scenario until the end of the month.

Bitcoin is trading at $115,352 at press time.

Higher on Powell Jackson Hole Remarks

by admin August 24, 2025

Perhaps surprising markets which had expected a hawkish tone, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell firmly put a September rate cut on the table on Friday.

Speaking at the Kansas City Fed’s Economic Symposium in Jackson Hole, Powell said the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting policy.

“Downside risks to employment are rising,” said Powell. “If those risks materialize, they can do so quickly in the form of sharply higher layoffs and rising unemployment.”

Bitcoin has gained about 2% since the remarks hit the wires, rising to $114,200. U.S. stocks have added more than 1% and the 10-year Treasury yield is lower by six basis points to 4.27%. The dollar index has dipped about 0.5% and gold is higher by 0.6%.

Rough week ahead of Powell

In anticipation that Powell would remain hawkish, risk markets — crypto among them — had been under sizable pressure in the days leading up to his address.

Touching a record high above $124,000 about one week ago alongside September rate cut expectations that had risen to nearly 100%, bitcoin BTC$114,886.93 has slumped nearly 10% to $112,000 since as those monetary easing hopes quickly dwindled to just 69% in the hours ahead of Powell’s speech. In the minutes following, those odds have re-risen to nearly 90%, per CME FedWatch.

The correction in the perhaps more speculative ether (ETH) was even deeper, with that crypto tumbling roughly 12% over the same time frame after coming within a few dollars of its all-time high. It’s bounced nearly 8% since the Powell speech.

In traditional markets, the Nasdaq dipped 3% over the past few days as it too priced in lessening chances of a rate cut.

Best Crypto to Buy Now as FED Chair Jerome Powell Hints at September Rate Cut

by admin August 24, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

FED Chair Jerome Powell spoke at Jackson Hole on August 22, addressing rate cuts, inflation, and the labor market.

Powell’s Friday appearance turned out to be a bonanza for intraday stock traders and crypto investors, as both the NASDAQ and major cryptos surged after he hinted at a possible September rate cut.

Powell noted that the balance of risks is shifting in the U.S. economy. While inflation remains a concern for the Fed, the latest labor market data is now a bigger worry.

Job growth, for instance, has slowed dramatically: from 168,000 new jobs in 2024 to just 35,000 in the latest figures. At the same time, unemployment has held steady at 4.2%.

This slowdown is partly due to reduced demand and supply in the job market, temporarily influenced by weaker immigration flows.

Powell warned that the labor market remains in a delicate position, and a wave of layoffs could make conditions worse.

Read on as we unpack Powell’s September rate cut hint, what’s driving it, and how you can ride the brewing risk-on sentiment among investors by loading up on the best cryptos to buy now.

Powell’s Rate Cut Hint Could Spark the Next Crypto Rally

Inflation is still around 2.6% to 2.9% above the Fed’s 2% target, largely due to Trump’s tariffs, which are expected to gradually push prices higher.

However, the Federal Reserve views this as a one-time bump rather than the start of an inflation spiral.

Speaking on interest rates, Powell noted that current levels are now closer to neutral – a zone that neither slows nor boosts the economy – and described the Fed’s stance as a little restrictive.

He added that while there’s room for a rate cut, the Fed intends to move carefully based on incoming data.

Here’s the kicker now: although Powell didn’t commit to a September cut, he admitted it’s certainly a possibility.

Wall Street celebrated the remarks, with the NASDAQ surging 1.39% in just 15 minutes. Crypto markets also rallied, as Bitcoin climbed 4%, once again crossing the $115K mark.

Traditionally, rate cuts are bullish for risk-on assets like crypto. Why? Because cheaper borrowing often pushes investors toward alternative ‘high-risk, high-reward’ investments like cryptocurrencies.

That’s why the prospect of a September rate cut is being viewed as a potential major catalyst for another broad-based altcoin rally.

If you’re looking to cash in on this opportunity, now may be the best time to scoop up promising low-cap, high-upside.

To help you out, here are our top picks for the next cryptos to explode.

1. Bitcoin Hyper ($HYPER) – Next-Gen Bitcoin L2 Bringing Fast Transactions & Web3 Compatibility

Bitcoin Hyper ($HYPER) is the world’s first Bitcoin Layer 2 solution that brings Solana-like speed and scalability to the Bitcoin blockchain.

Despite being the biggest cryptocurrency in the industry, Bitcoin has long struggled with slow transactions, increasing traffic, and zero Web3 compatibility.

$HYPER aims to fix this through the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) integration, which allows developers to execute smart contracts and build dApps on the Bitcoin network – something that was never possible before.

At the heart of this ecosystem overhaul is a non-custodial, decentralized canonical bridge. In plain English, it locks up your Layer 1 $BTC and mints an equivalent amount of Layer 2 $BTC tokens.

These L2 tokens can then be used for Web3 interactions, including staking, lending, swapping, NFT transactions, DeFi trading, and much more. Once you’re done, simply use the bridge to swap back your L2 tokens for L1 Bitcoin.

The $HYPER presale has already gained strong traction, raising $11.53M so far.

Even better, this includes sizable institutional investments, with whale purchases of $75K, $54K, $38K, $19.6K, and $13.2K, underscoring big-money interest in the project.

Currently priced at just $0.012785 apiece, our $HYPER price prediction suggests it could surge to $0.32 by the end of 2025, delivering a potential 2,400% return.

Want in on the project? Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to buy $HYPER.

For more information, visit Bitcoin Hyper’s official website.

2. Best Wallet Token ($BEST) – Native Cryptocurrency of a Privacy-First and User-Friendly Crypto Wallet

Best Wallet Token ($BEST) is the in-house cryptocurrency of Best Wallet – a multi-chain, non-custodial crypto wallet built with a focus on user security.

Here, you hold the private keys, leaving no room for foul play by malicious third parties. On top of that, the app uses Fireblocks MPC security tech, biometric logins, and scam protection to keep your funds safe.

One of the most exciting features, though, is the Presale Aggregator section, which helps you load up on the best new meme coins in presale before they hit the mainstream.

Plus, being a multi-chain wallet, Best Wallet already supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Polygon, and BNB Smart Chain, with 50 more blockchains coming soon.

This means you won’t have to jump between multiple wallets to manage your crypto portfolio – everything is accessible from one easy-to-use interface.

Why buy $BEST?

  • According to our $BEST price prediction, the token could hit $0.62 by 2026, delivering a potential 2,500% return.
  • Reduced trading and gas fees on the platform
  • Staking rewards, currently yielding 89%
  • Early access to the best crypto presales
  • Voting rights on key project decisions

The $BEST presale has been a massive success, to say the least, having already raised over $15M from early investors.

Currently priced at just $0.025515 per token, the next price increase is only a few hours away, so this could be your last chance to grab it this low.

Check out Best Wallet Token’s official website for more information.

3. Bertram The Pomeranian ($BERT) – A Philanthropic Meme Coin Eyeing New All-Time Highs

Bertram The Pomeranian ($BERT) is a Solana meme coin that goes beyond being just another character-driven hype asset.

Inspired by Bertram, a famous Pomeranian dog influencer with millions of followers, $BERT is tied to a noble mission of global pet care through WOOFHub.

WOOFHub, by the way, is an AI-powered startup dedicated to raising awareness about dog shelters, enabling real-time adoption alerts, and helping with lost pet tracking.

It also sells NFC-enabled smart dog collars, allowing owners to keep tabs on their pets’ locations at all times.

It’s worth noting that the project has already donated over 5 tonnes of dog food worldwide, further reinforcing its socially conscious mission.

On the market side, $BERT recently hit a $70M market cap after surging 40% in the past seven days. And it’s now trading at around $0.07095.

Its recent listing on BloFin injected fresh liquidity, fueling an 61% spike in trading volume within the last 24 hours alone.

Combined with strong technicals, including a robust MACD histogram and neatly stacked, fanning EMAs, $BERT looks poised to extend its parabolic bull run in the weeks ahead.

Conclusion

Fed Chair Jerome Powell has delivered positive signals for the U.S. economy, from slowing inflation and historically low unemployment rates to a relatively neutral stance on interest rates.

Most notably, he hinted at the possibility of an interest rate cut in September, which helped propel both the NASDAQ and crypto markets higher.

If you want to ride this bull run, utility-driven tokens like Bitcoin Hyper ($HYPER), Best Wallet Token ($BEST), and $BERT could be among your best bets.

That said, remember that crypto markets are highly volatile and subject to significant risks. Always do your own research before investing. This article is not financial advice.

1,200 Criminals Arrested in Crypto Clampdown: Interpol

by admin August 24, 2025

In brief

  • Interpol’s Operation Serengeti 2.0 resulted in arrests of over 1,200 cybercriminals across 18 African countries and the U.K., with $97.4 million confiscated.
  • Angola dismantled 25 illegal crypto mining centers run by Chinese nationals, seizing $37 million worth of equipment and power stations.
  • Zambian authorities broke up a massive online investment fraud scheme that defrauded 65,000 victims of $300 million through fake crypto investments.

Interpol has arrested more than 1,200 cybercriminals who have collectively targeted 88,000 victims—including through cryptocurrency scams.

A “sweeping” effort saw 18 African countries and the U.K. unite for Operation Serengeti 2.0, with more than $97.4 million confiscated as a result.

In Angola, 25 crypto mining centers were dismantled, amid allegations that 60 Chinese nationals had been illegally validating blockchain transactions and earning digital assets as a result.

Officials say mining equipment and 45 illicit power stations worth over $37 million were seized, which will now be used to distribute power in poorer areas.

Meanwhile, Zambian authorities broke up a “large-scale online investment fraud scheme” that led 65,000 people to lose $300 million.

Victims were encouraged to invest in digital assets after being lured in by aggressive advertising campaigns that promoted attractive returns.

“Authorities arrested 15 individuals and seized key evidence including domains, mobile numbers and bank accounts. Investigations are ongoing with efforts focused on tracking down overseas collaborators,” the Interpol statement added.

In separate developments, a suspected human trafficking network was disrupted in the country, with 372 forged passports from seven countries seized as a result.

Prior to Operation Serengeti 2.0 taking place, investigators had undergone training in blockchain analytics and ransomware analysis—familiarizing themselves with open-source intelligence tools.

“Each Interpol-coordinated operation builds on the last, deepening cooperation, increasing information sharing and developing investigative skills across member countries,” said Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza.

The law enforcement agency added that the scale of the arrests “underscores the global reach of cybercrime and the urgent need for cross-border cooperation.”

The operation was funded by the U.K. Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. A spokesperson for the FCDO told Decrypt that the operation “helped dismantle a network of cyber criminals and scammers who seek to destabilize our societies.”

“The UK will continue to use all tools at our disposal to protect our national security and support our international partners in tackling cyber-crime,” the spokesperson added.

In other developments, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it has deported dozens of people convicted of “cyberterrorism and internet fraud,” primarily from China and the Philippines.

Some of those cases involved romance scams, with victims deceived into handing over cash for bogus crypto investments.

Morpho price set for a 60% jump as top metrics hit record highs

by admin August 24, 2025

Morpho price continued its strong rally this week, hitting its highest level since February amid robust demand for its lending solutions.

Summary

  • Morpho token has jumped by 245% from the year-to-date low.
  • The total deposits in its platform jumped to $10 billion.
  • Technical analysis points to more gains this year.

Morpho (MORPHO) token jumped to a high of $2.8567, up by over 245% from its lowest level in March. Its market cap has soared to $867 million, while its 24-hour volume was up by 24%.

Morpho price has rallied because of the ongoing demand of its solutions. Data on its website shows that the total deposits in its platform crossed the $10 billion milestone this week. Its issued loans have soared to over $3.6 billion.

According to DeFi Llama, the total value locked in Morpho soared to a record high of $7 billion, up from $2.5 billion in April this year.

Most of Morpho’s growth accelerated after its integration on Coinbase, the biggest crypto exchange in the US. Its integration gave it access to millions of users, a trend that may continue after the launch of The Base App.

Morpho offers a platform where users can deposit their funds and earn a return. It differs from other platforms in that users can select their preferred pools to deposit their funds. Users can also use their crypto assets as collateral for loans.

Morpho is one of the several players that are disrupting the crypto lending industry, which has accumulated over $100 billion in deposits. The others are popular names like AAVE and Maple Finance.

Morpho price technical analysis

Morpho price chart | Source: crypto.news

The daily chart shows that the Morpho token price has rebounded in the past few weeks. It jumped from a low of $0.8186 in April to nearly $3 today.

Morpho has crossed the important resistance level at $2.2570, where it formed a double-top chart pattern with a neckline of $1.5700, its lowest point on Aug. 2.

Morpho price has moved above the 50-day Exponential Moving Average, a sign that bulls are in control. The Supertrend indicator has turned green, while oscillators are rising.

Therefore, the Morpho token price will likely continue rising as bulls target the year-to-date high of $4.1715, which is 60% above the current level.

Trump-Backed Wlfi To Unlock 5% Of Tokens Worth $40B On Sept 1

Trump-Backed WLFI to Unlock 5% of Tokens Worth $40B on Sept 1

by admin August 24, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump’s family-backed DeFi project, World Liberty Financial (WLFI), is preparing for its first significant token unlock on September 1. The move comes just as perpetual futures for its WLFI token began trading on top exchanges, implying a market valuation of more than $40 billion.

Early Investor Unlocks and Market Debut

According to the project, early investors will receive access to 20% of their tokens purchased during two initial funding rounds. Those rounds were priced at $0.015 and $0.05 per token. The remaining 80% of investor allocations will remain locked until a future governance vote determines their release.

Initial unlock (early supporters): 20% of WLFI purchased by each wallet in the $0.015 and $0.05 rounds will unlock. This directly rewards the earliest backers.

— WLFI (@worldlibertyfi) August 22, 2025

Overall, the September unlock will account for about 5% of the token’s total supply, while allocations for founders, advisors, and team members will stay locked.

To activate their holdings, investors will be required to use an on-chain “Lockbox” system beginning August 25. The project said most users are already approved to connect immediately, with only a few failing compliance checks.

Momentum has been building for World Liberty Financial in recent months. In July, WLFI token holders voted unanimously to make the Ethereum-based token tradable. Alongside its USD1 stablecoin push, the project is preparing a loyalty scheme for users and weighing a potential Coinbase listing.

The anticipation was reflected in the debut of perpetual futures tied to WLFI. On Saturday, Binance, Bybit, and OKX all listed contracts for the token, with prices hovering between $0.40 and $0.42 in early trading. Based on the project’s 100 billion total token supply, that translates to a fully diluted valuation of more than $40 billion.

If spot trading mirrors those levels after the unlock, the Trump family’s stake in the project would carry extraordinary value. Trump’s holding company, DT Marks DEFI LLC, controls 22.5 billion tokens, equivalent to more than $9 billion at current prices. The President personally holds 15.75 billion tokens, worth over $6 billion, more than doubling the net worth Forbes currently assigns him.

The project has not been without controversy. Trump’s large stake has drawn criticism from political opponents who warn of conflicts of interest. Democrats pushed for stricter guardrails in the GENIUS Act, the stablecoin legislation signed into law by Trump in July, but most of those proposals were left out of the final bill.

Cardano (ADA) to $1: What Remains

Cardano (ADA) to $1: What Remains

by admin August 24, 2025

Cardano briefly reached $1 in mid-August to the delight of bulls, building on a rally that initiated after late July’s sell-off.

However, as soon as ADA’s price reached $1, it couldn’t sustain momentum and retreated afterward. This was followed by consistent attempts by the bulls to hit $1 in the days that followed, but these stalled just above $0.90.

This trend continued until this week, when markets plunged in response to macroeconomic uncertainty, wiping out millions in long liquidations at the start of the week.

You Might Also Like

Cardano reacted with a major two-day drop from the Aug. 17 high of $0.987 to a low of $0.843 on Aug. 19. The markets, however, failed to gain momentum with the ADA price dropping to a low of $0.8215 on Friday, from where it sharply rebounded.

Cardano to $1: What’s left?

Cardano sharply rose from a low of $0.8215 to $0.9415 on Friday after Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell signaled the central bank may not wait for perfect inflation before reducing interest rates.

You Might Also Like

Momentum indicators such as the daily RSI have flipped into the positive zone, hinting at a slight edge for bulls, although the likelihood of consolidation remains before a decisive move.

En route to $1, Cardano appears to be forming a resistance zone above $0.9, in the range of $0.93 to $0.99, as seen in multiple retests since Aug. 15.

For Cardano to achieve $1 and above, this resistance range needs to be squashed with enormous buying pressure. On the other hand, major support is envisaged at the daily SMA 50 at $0.79 in the event of a drop.

State of Crypto: Crypto Takes Jackson Hole

by admin August 24, 2025

Policymakers of various stripes spoke at the SALT Wyoming conference this week in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

You’re reading State of Crypto, a CoinDesk newsletter looking at the intersection of cryptocurrency and government. Click here to sign up for future editions.

The narrative

Congress is still on vacation, but policymakers trekked up to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to speak to the crypto industry — largely praising it or saying how they expect legislation to move forward. Here are some clips of what they said, courtesy of CoinDesk’s Helene Braun and others.

Why it matters

The industry has seen a lot of progress on crypto policy priorities this year. Lawmakers’ comments hint at what the last four months of 2025 might look like, and what we can expect from federal regulators.

Breaking it down

“I believe that we’ll have between 12 and 18 Democrats at least open to voting for market structure.” — Senate Banking Committee Chair Tim Scott

“We will have it on the President’s desk before Thanksgiving.” — Senator Cynthia Lummis on market structure legislation

“Just imagine seeing on public equity all the transactions that go in and out of that company and how much information that gives you.” — Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson

“We need a clear, strategic regulatory framework that will facilitate the adoption of new technology, recognizing that in some cases, it may be inadequate and inappropriate to apply existing regulatory guidance to address emerging tech.” — Federal Reserve Vice Chair for Supervision Michelle Bowman

“There is nothing to be afraid of when thinking about smart contracts, tokenization or distributed ledgers.” — Federal Reserve Board Governor Chris Waller

“It’s no secret that my side of the aisle would prefer not to see any sitting President — I won’t name one — participating in this market while a sitting president unless those assets are in a sealed trust.” — Rep. Angie Craig, ranking member on the House Agriculture Committee

  • Congress remains on break and no regulatory agency is holding an event this week.
  • (CNBC) Goldman Sachs expects U.S. consumers to pay for the tariffs that U.S. President Donald Trump imposed on most countries trading with the U.S. A few days after that earlier article, Sony announced it would raise the price of Playstation 5 consoles in the U.S.
  • (Electronic Frontier Foundation) Wyoming and South Dakota have enacted stringent laws requiring websites to verify users’ ages if they host “any sexual content,” including “a broad range of non-pornographic content, including classic literature and art.”
  • (The Wall Street Journal) Despite Elon Musk’s public statements about founding a new political party, he is backtracking and instead considering supporting Vice President JD Vance and other Republicans, the Journal reported.

If you’ve got thoughts or questions on what I should discuss next week or any other feedback you’d like to share, feel free to email me at nik@coindesk.com or find me on Bluesky @nikhileshde.bsky.social.

You can also join the group conversation on Telegram.

See ya’ll next week!

Why Arthur Hayes Expects Ethereum to Surge to $20,000

In brief

  • Ethereum hit a new all-time high on Friday, but Arthur Hayes thinks it is going much higher.
  • The BitMEX founder upped his price prediction to $10,000-$20,000 this cycle.
  • The prediction is fueled by his anticipation that Trump’s administration will adopt major quantitative easing.

After setting a new all-time high price on Friday, Ethereum could still have a long way to run—at least, according to one of the crypto industry’s most outspoken backers.

BitMEX founder Arthur Hayes has upped his Ethereum price target again, this time suggesting that the second largest crypto asset could jump to as high as $10,000 or $20,000 by the end of the cycle.

Hayes outlined his price prediction—centered on his expectation of major money printing during President Donald Trump’s time in office—on the Crypto Banter podcast hosted by crypto personality Ran Neuner this week, ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s speech at Jackson Hole on Friday.

“I think ETH goes [to] $10,000 or $20,000 before the end of the cycle,” said Hayes when asked about his price prediction. “Once it’s broken through, there’s a gap of air to the upside, and you have obviously all these digital asset treasury companies who are raising money. It’s going to be easier to raise money if the asset they’re buying has broken through all-time highs and is ascending upwards.”

Ethereum began surging upward once more on Friday, challenging its all-time high after a more doveish tone came from Powell, who signaled a rate cut could be in order. The price of ETH jumped to a new peak of $4,789 on Friday, just barely edging out the coin’s 2021 price record.

Its recent rise has been propelled in part due to the digital asset treasuries Hayes mentioned, notably BitMine Immersion Technologies and SharpLink Gaming–the two largest ETH treasuries which combine for more than $10 billion worth of ETH. Ethereum ETFs too have contributed, adding record breaking inflows throughout July and growing to hold more than 5% of the entire ETH supply.

Hayes has been bullish on ETH in recent months, telling Decrypt in May that he saw the second-largest crypto asset rising to $4,000-$5,000 before year’s end. He later upped that prediction in July, saying that ETH would “tear the market a new asshole” as it ripped to $10,000, once more citing its place as one of the “most hated assets.”

Now, he’s suggesting that Ethereum could rip towards $20,000 by the end of the cycle, or the time at which the bull market ends, in part because of the amount of money the Trump administration is likely to print.

In other words, Hayes expects the administration to institute major quantitative easing, a monetary policy where new money is created and can be used to purchase financial assets.

“We have from the middle of 2026 until Trump leaves office for them to go absolutely insane with how much they’re going to print,” Hayes told Neuner. “My base case is we are going to have a massive bull market in all types of financial assets connected to anything Trump believes is important, between now and when he exits office.”

Hayes previously leaned on his belief that accelerated money printing and an increased money supply are coming to fuel his year-end Bitcoin prediction of $250,000.

The now-pardoned BitMex founder is financially aligned with ETH’s success, adding around 1.8K ETH worth more than $8.6 million since August 10 according to wallet tracking from Arkham Intelligence. The wallet tagged as belonging to Hayes holds more than $50 million worth of ETH and staked ETH equivalents.
