Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios closing UK studio in workforce restructure, following cancellation of Xbox exclusive Contraband

by admin September 30, 2025

Avalanche Studios is the latest developer to be impacted by layoffs, as the company’s UK studio is set to be closed as part of a workforce restructure that will impact its Swedish studios too.

The studio is known for the Just Cause series (not to be confused with Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche Software, owned by Warner Bros.) and was previously working on an Xbox exclusive called Contraband.

However, that project was cancelled by Microsoft back in August, with the studio writing in a statement: “Active development has now stopped while we evaluate the project’s future.”

Contraband – Official Reveal Trailer 4K | E3 2021Watch on YouTube

In a statement shared by the company today, the decision to restructure has been made “in light of current challenges to our business and the industry”.

It continued: “This review had led us to the difficult conclusion that we must make changes to our staffing and locations. As a result, we are proposing to close our Liverpool studio, and to initiate a collective consultation process, as required by UK law. This will impact all Avalanchers in Liverpool. The changes will also impact our other studio locations in Malmő and Stockholm, where we will reduce our workforce and restructure the teams to address our games’ needs.”

It concluded: “Despite these changes, we remain deeply committed to providing amazing games to our passionate player communities.” The statement does not mention Contraband and its cancellation specifically.

Contraband, a co-op smuggling game, was revealed in June 2021 at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, but little of the game has been shown since. Its official trailer has been removed from the Avalanche website, though you can see IGN’s video above.

Its cancellation arrived in the wake of layoffs across Microsoft in July, which resulted in the cancellation of multiple projects including The Initiative’s Perfect Dark, Rare’s Everwild, and an unannounced ZeniMax MMO.

Microsoft CEO and chairman Satya Nadella later claimed “Microsoft is thriving”, largely due to its investments in AI.

Back in 2024, Avalanche Studios entered a collective bargaining agreement with Swedish unions, which was planned to go into effect by the second quarter of this year.

“Over the past years, we’ve taken significant steps toward making Avalanche one of the best workplaces in the games industry,” Avalanche CEO Stefanía Halldórsdóttir said at the time.

The Very Finest Cosplay Fits From New York’s Anime NYC

by admin September 30, 2025

Anime NYC is an annual New York-based event to celebrate all things anime and related Japanese pop culture. It purports to be the largest anime convention on the East Coast, with over one-hundred-thousand people showing up for the four-day event. And with its association with Crunchyroll, has become an important fixture in the Western anime calendar. As such, it brings in an impressive list of celebrity guests, and of course some incredibly fine cosplay. As ever, Mineralblu were in attendance for Kotaku, snapping the best fits for your eyeballs’ pleasure.

2025’s event saw some very big names from the world of Japanese culture. A-1 Pictures president Akira Shimizu and Blue Eye Samurai director Jane Wu were there, along with voice actors Abby Trott, Zeno Robinson and Kpop Demon Hunters‘ May Hong, among many others. But we’re here to celebrate the cosplayers, the people who put months into sewing and crafting extraordinary outfits to celebrate their favorite anime and video games. The results, as ever, are fantastic.

Check back soon for a video of the event, but in the meantime, click on for some of the most impressive costumes.

Judas Is Ken Levine’s “Biggest Radical Departure” Since BioShock, He Says

by admin September 30, 2025

Nearly three years ago, Ken Levine shared the first look at Judas, his long-awaited follow-up to BioShock Infinite. Players have noticed some obvious visual similarities between Judas and the BioShock games, but according to Levine, it represents “the biggest radical departure” for him since the original BioShock.

“There are parts of Judas that are more similar to BioShock, and there are parts of Judas that are really really radically different,” explained Levine during an appearance on MrMattyPlays’ YouTube show. “I’m sure people notice there’s a gun in one hand [and] powers [in] the other hand. We have an additional hacking thing which we haven’t shown off that much. But the way the game works, the way the game is populated, and the way you choose between these relationships is something we’ve never ever done before. The way the world is decorated, the way encounters come in, the way you choose paths in the game, those are all so radically different. … This is probably the biggest radical departure we’ve made since I did BioShock.”

Judas is the name of the game’s main character, who finds herself trapped on a generational spaceship called the Mayflower. The Mayflower is carrying the last survivors of humanity, and their fate may be tied to three powerful individuals on the ship and Judas’ decisions to befriend or alienate them.

During the interview, Levine described his new story engine as “narrative Legos,” which can place important events at different parts of the story depending on which choices the player makes. Levine also indicated that he is “placing trust in your audience and being okay with them just missing stuff” if they choose one narrative path over the other.

Earlier this summer, Levine stressed that Judas will avoid live-service elements and other major gaming trends in favor of preserving a single-player experience. Levine also demonstrated how players will make friends and enemies among the three major characters in the game.

Judas doesn’t currently have a release date.

*cavernous, torturous, 20-second-long sucking-in of breath*

RICHAAAARRRRD. RICHAARD WAAAAALKER. RICHARD WALKER, DEPUTY EDITOR OF XBOX ACHIEVEMENTS. RETURN IT TO ME, RICHARD. RETURN WHAT IS OWED. YOU KNOW OF WHAT I SPEAK. J’ACCUSE, RICHARD. J’ACCUSE YOU OF DÉROBING MA JEUX PORE LE ORDINATEUR. VOULEZ VOUS COUCHER AVEC MON TACTICS RPG, RICHARD?? LE VAUTOUR ENCERCLE LA CARCASSE, LE BOL EST SUR LA TABLE – COMMENT PUIS-JE ME RENDER CHEZ LE BOULANGER????

The year was 2010 when you took it from me, Richard – the mother of all grid-based battlers, one of the greatest digital fables of all time, a thrilling study in dynastic intrigue and medieval warfare. I had yet to even finish the game myself, having long coveted it as a youth consigned to PS1 PAL purgatory. But I could not resist your overtures, Richard! I assumed that you would return it to me in a month, perhaps two. Little did I know that Final Fantasy Tactics’ acclaimed branching Job system would school you in the dark arts of back-stabbing and betrayal, that it would poison your dove-white temperament and set you upon the road to villainy.

I thought we were bros, Richard! Kindred spirits forged in the flame of mutual incompetence! We came up in this business together! Remember when I held your dictaphone for you while you interviewed BioWare’s Ray Muzyka, Richard? I was terrified it wouldn’t pick up his audio, so resorted to kneeling between you like a penitent sinner, waggling the mic back and forth! We looked like idiots, but it’s fine! It’s fine! We got over it! I barely ever think of the scalding embarrassment and humiliation!! Muzyka is some kind of magic medicine brewer now, anyway – who gives a fuck what he thinks? The key thing is that it was a bonding experience, a foundation for everlasting trust! What did I ever do to you, Richard!? What crime have I committed for you to treat me this way?!?!

I name you, Richard, I name you in the public forum, in the court of our peers. With bleeding hands I carve these words in ten-feet high letters upon the mausoleum of posterity: “Here stands indicted Richard Walker, bastard. Faithless one! Breaker of oaths! Smudger of covenants! Pact-shirker! Dog-leech! Cut-purse! Larkspell! Trencher-mouth! Let none welcome him. Let all faces turn from him. Let all doors be closed to him! Let his food taste like ashes and his favourite videogames play like The Lord of the Rings: Gollum!”

You thought I had forgotten, Richard. And to be honest, I did forget, because it has been such a very long time, Richard, but Square Enix did not forget – today, they release a new version of the game on Steam with enhanced visuals, and lo do I rouse in horrified recognition from my dreamless sleep in the murmuring silt of the abysmal sea, lo do I rise in the coruscating incandescence of my absolute fury and indignation to burst upon the surface world and accost the traitor!

RICHAAAARD. RICHAAAARD WAAAALKER. My PSP’s battery may have swollen up like a diseased appendix, but I still have my 32MB Memory Stick Duo with a campaign save. It cries out to me for vengeance! Vengeance upon that great unclean soul and fugitive from justice, Richard Walker, Deputy Editor of Xbox Achievements!

Sony's digital-only PS5 now comes with less storage in Europe and isn't any cheaper to buy

Sony’s digital-only PS5 now comes with less storage in Europe and isn’t any cheaper to buy

by admin September 30, 2025

Sony has released a revised digital PS5 model in Europe, with less storage and a new matte finish – but the price hasn’t been reduced.

Earlier this month, reliable insider Billbil-Kun reported the digital-only model of the PS5 would receive a downgrade from 1TB of storage to 825GB. This model went on sale in Europe this month – and crucially costs the same (€499) despite less storage.

Now, a new unboxing video on YouTube from Austin Evans confirms the storage downgrade, as well as the use of cheaper parts, based on a new console purchased from Germany.

The New PS5 Slim is WORSEWatch on YouTube

Both the black central casing of the console and the white outer sleeves now come in a matte finish rather than a glossy finish – no more fingerprints!

The newer console is also 100g lighter than the previous slim version – and 1.3kg lighter than the launch model.

As for the SSD, the actual amount of usable storage on the newer model is 667.2GB (compared with 848.0GB of usable space on the previous model). That’s a 27 percent reduction and not a huge amount of space, especially considering this is a digital-only model

Inside, the fan is lighter, plus the motherboard design has been refined and is thinner.

While Evans notes the internal engineering is excellent in maintaining the same power and performance, ultimately the reduced SSD makes this iteration of the console considerably worse.

For Sony, it’s presumably cheaper to make. But that saving has not been passed on to the consumer, considering all PS5 consoles cost more now than ever.

Earlier this year, Sony raised the price of the digital edition in the UK and mainland Europe from £390/€450 to £430/€500. And this was the second price increase, as it originally cost £359.99/€399.99 at launch, meaning the digital edition is €100 more than five years ago.

More recently, the price of all versions of the console went up in the US as the company continues to “navigate a challenging economic environment”. It’s unclear yet if the revised version of the console with storage reduction will be available in the US as in Europe.

Xbox Ally X’s Are Selling For Stupid Amounts On eBay

by admin September 30, 2025

Microsoft and Asus’ collaborative handheld Xbox device is arriving on October 16, 2025, with pre-orders available at various outlets right now. And as things go on the internet, eBay listings promising confirmed pre-orders are now going for two to three times the retail price –which is pretty ridiculous when the top-tier model of this handheld is already a thousand bucks.

Read More: Xbox’s Handheld Finally Has A Price, And It Costs More Than An Xbox

The ROG Xbox Ally X is an Xbox-skinned portable PC much like the Steam Deck or Asus’ own non-Xbox-branded “Ally.” These devices have become quite popular in recent years because, well, they’re usually pretty awesome. With the ability to carry around massive storefronts like Steam on the go, and enough horsepower to run graphical powerhouses like Cyberpunk 2077, it’s no wonder Microsoft wanted to get in on the action with a more Xbox-themed offering. The only problem is that the hardware manufacturer and game publisher is asking folks to spend $600 on the basic model, and a full four-digit $1,000 for the top-tier model featuring a more powerful processor. And yet, some eBayers think folks will spend even more than that even though it hasn’t sold out elsewhere. Wild.

© Screenshot: eBay / Kotaku

Who’s buying this thing anyway?

The ROG Xbox Ally X (which is the more powerful of the two models) is technically more powerful than some of its competitors. It features a new AMD Z2E AI Chip. Is it a generational leap? Certainly not enough to prompt Valve to base a Steam Deck successor on it.

Read More: Microsoft Reveals The First $800 Xbox With Another Round Of Price Hikes

Still, the improved performance of the Z2E is worth noting, with around a 10 to 20-percent performance improvement over TKTK, and sometimes a bit more, under certain circumstances. That improvement, however, comes at a cost, namely about $500 more than what you’d pay for a Steam Deck, and $100 more than Asus’ excellent ROG Ally X, which is not the Xbox-branded one. (No, you’re not dumb, this naming convention is.)

So, that really just leaves the controller-based Xbox user interface, which reduces the overall processing power Windows takes up and is more gamepad-friendly, and the unique controller grips. And even then, folks have found a way to get the new Xbox game launcher working on regular, non-Xbox-branded Ally portable PCs, and, to be honest, while I haven’t held a ROG Xbox Ally, it’s gonna be hard to compete with the Steam Deck’s excellent ergonomics.

Read More: The Biggest Reason To Buy The Xbox Ally Handheld Just Leaked

At $1,000 for the top-tier Xbox handheld, it’s hard to see a compelling reason to upgrade if you already have a Steam Deck, and certainly not if you have a more powerful handheld than that. Who, then, is gonna get suckered into spending twice that for an eBay pre-order? Hopefully not you!

Monopoly: Pokemon Edition Is Back In Stock And Only $20 At Amazon

Monopoly: Pokemon Edition Is Back In Stock And Only $20 At Amazon

by admin September 30, 2025

The popular Pokemon-themed edition of the classic board game Monopoly is back in stock and discounted to $20 (was $25) at Amazon. Released last December, Monopoly: Pokemon Edition has rarely been discounted below its budget-friendly $25 MSRP. Theo $20 price is very close to the all-time low of $18.74, and that deal sold out fast when Amazon had it in July. You can also get this deal at Walmart and Target.

If you’re interested in this deal, you may want to snag it soon. Pokemon Monopoly is regularly on Amazon’s top charts for board games at full price, so this could sell out (again).

$20 (was $25)

In Monopoly: Pokemon Edition, instead of buying and collecting property with Monopoly Money, 2-4 players use Poke Balls to search for Pokemon on locations around the board. The goal is to catch eight types of Pokemon or be the last trainer with any Poke Balls left in their inventory. Along with a colorful board featuring locations from the series, you’ll get adorable miniature figures of Pikachu, Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly to use as the game pieces.

It’s not all too surprising that this edition of Pokemon Monopoly has been extremely popular. What is somewhat surprising, however, is that sold for only $25 out of the gate. Licensed editions of Monopoly based on huge media franchises routinely sell for $40.

Monopoly: Pokemon Edition (Hasbro Gaming)

This isn’t the first time Hasbro and The Pokemon Company have joined forces to release a Pokemon-themed edition of Monopoly. Earlier editions of the game are out of print and only available from resellers. Monopoly: Pokemon Kanto Edition is $45 at Amazon and features metal tokens of Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Eevee, and Jigglypuff. Over at Walmart, you can buy Monopoly: Pokemon Johto Edition for $58. This one also includes six metal game pieces: Pikachu, Totodile, Togepi, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Pichu.

For another themed version of a classic board game, check out Ravensburger’s Pokemon Labyrinth. Your goal is to navigate through an ever-shifting maze to track down various Pokemon. Matches are quick at around 30 minutes, and you can compete against up to three other players. A cool glow-in-the-dark version of Pokemon Labyrinth launched last fall. Both editions retail for $30.

And if you’re interested in learning the ropes of the Pokemon Trading Card Game, there are three very reasonably priced editions of Pokemon Battle Academy, each of which comes with multiple decks and offers a great way for kids (and adults!) to get started with the TCG.

Messenger is an absurdly slick, perfectly lovely free pocket world exploration game you can play in a browser

by admin September 30, 2025

Based on time of day and year, global fertility rates, and our own secret, illegal research into RPS supporter breeding patterns, I calculate that there’s a 12% chance you are reading this while carrying or cradling a small child. If that’s the case, then: what on Earth are you doing here? We post all kinds of awful grown-up things on RPS. Mark is threatening to do another salacious mod article and just this very morning, I posted a picture of a xenomorph covered in blood.

This piece should be safe for kids, however, as long as you don’t explain what a xenomorph is or what “salacious” means. It’s about Messenger, a free browser-based game in which you run around a very small 3D watercolour planet, delivering post. I suspect you and your child will enjoy it, unless we’ve already corrupted them and you’re now playing Aliens: Fireteam Elite.

Created using WebGL, Messenger is from the Short Hike school of vibes-driven pocket worlds with gentle to-do lists. The controls consist of moving with WASD and jumping – more of a lazy hop, really – with space bar. You’ve got a few deliveries to make off the bat, and you can take on more assignments by chatting to people.

Image credit: Rock Paper Shotgun/Team Cherry

The dialogue writing is quite spry. I delivered a letter to a bald man which turned out to be from his past self. “Take care of your hair,” it read. Sad trombone. You don’t really need an objective, mind: it’s enough just to amble down the road and watch the horizon unroll. There’s also the option of customising your outfit, and an emoji system for communicating with the other players – yes, those are other players! – who pop into your session at random.

Find Messenger here. Try not to get it confused with The Messenger, an upsettingly hard game about ninjas. It’s ridiculous that this sort of game now hums along in a browser, isn’t it? Imagine that it’s 2000 and you found this on AOL – your head would asplode. Your modem would probably asplode, as well. “Asplode” is a reference to noted early noughties comedy website Homestar Runner, by the way – your kid likely isn’t old enough for Strongbad yet, but it’s the kind of thing they’ll love when they start school. Better than the rest of the junk you find on those modern videophones, anyway.

Among the mysteries of Messenger is who exactly made it. The creators are Abeto, who “craft interactive realtime experiences”, and have a picturesque, tastefully information-free website where you can wave away the petals that fall from a perpetually unfurling flower. Please don’t let this be a front for a seedy cryptocurrency joint, or a terrible data-harvesting exercise. Please let it just be a nice game about roaming a pleasant spherical suburb.

Lego Is Retiring One Of The Most Popular Star Wars Sets

Lego Is Retiring One Of The Most Popular Star Wars Sets

by admin September 30, 2025

Not many Lego sets have the type of run the Darth Vader Helmet has enjoyed. Released way back in March 2021, the 834-piece display model of the classic Sith Lord from the Original Trilogy has outlived many Star Wars Lego sets released after it. The Darth Vader Helmet is practically ancient in Lego years, but it remains one of the best-selling Star Wars sets at major retailers to this day. Just in the last month, Amazon says it has sold over 2,000 Darth Vader Helmets, which is a higher total than a bunch of recently launched sets. But Dark Lord Vader’s life-support system can’t keep him alive in the Lego Star Wars universe forever. Lego has marked the Darth Vader Helmet as “retiring soon,” which means it’ll likely be sold out at major retailers before the end of the year.

If you want to add the set to your personal collection or are looking for an always-popular gift for a Star Wars fan this holiday season, the Lego Darth Vader Helmet is on sale for $62 (was $80) at Amazon and Walmart ahead of Prime Big Deal Days. This isn’t the all-time lowest price, but it’s one of the better discounts offered this year. We wouldn’t be surprised if both retailers sold out, and there’s no guarantee it would be restocked again. For context, the Lego Store is selling the set for full price, but it’s on backorder and won’t ship for two months.

You can pair the Darth Vader Helmet with deals on other Lego Star Wars Helmets, including The Mandalorian and Captain Rex, which are likely next in line for retirement. Walmart also has a stellar bundle deal featuring Kylo Ren’s Helmet and Command Shuttle that saves you over $40.

Lego Star Wars Helmet Models

Check out all five of the active Lego Star Wars Helmet sets as well as one retired model that has randomly popped back up on Amazon below.

After checking out the Star Wars Helmets, take a look at some of the other deals on soon-to-be-retired Lego Star Wars sets at the end of this story.

$62 (was $80) | Retiring soon

The Darth Vader Helmet is an 834-piece build measuring 8 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches. Designed for experienced builders, this model utilizes more advanced building techniques than some of the other smaller character helmets in the lineup. Along with the detailed exterior plating, the build includes Vader’s life-support system. The brick-built display stand includes a detachable nameplate with the Lego Star Wars logo.

Walmart was offering two different bundles with the Darth Vader Helmet earlier this month–one with the new UCS AT-ST and one with the Kylo Ren Helmet–but both are currently sold out.

$70 | Bundle with Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle for $98 (was $140)

Speaking of the Kylo Ren Helmet, the 529-piece model of the helmet worn by Lord Vader’s grandson is still available in a bundle deal at Walmart. You can pair it with Kylo Ren’s Command Shuttle, a 386-piece model of the villain’s stealthy starship, for $98 (was $140). You’re essentially getting both Kylo Ren $70 sets for only $49 each.

Outside of the bundle deals, Kylo Ren’s Helmet hasn’t received any discounts since launching in May for Star Wars Day. The 529-piece build is exclusive to Walmart and the Lego Store. The completed model measures 7 x 4.5 x 5 inches.

$56 (was $70)

The Mandalorian Helmet released back in early 2022 and probably won’t be sticking around for much longer either. The 584-piece build recreates Mando’s Beskar plate armor. When connected to the stand, The Mandalorian Helmet measures 7 x 4 x 4.5 inches.

The Mandalorian Helmet is on sale for $56 (was $70) at Amazon and Walmart.

$56 (was $70)

The replica of the popular 501st Legion Clone Commander’s Helmet actually has the highest piece count of the Star Wars Lego Helmets actively being produced today. The 854-piece Captain Rex Helmet measures 8 x 5 x 5 inches and does a stellar job recreating the unique armor plating from The Clone Wars film and follow-up TV series.

You can get the Captain Rex Helmet for $56 (was $70) at Amazon.

$65 (was $70)

The 616-piece Jango Fett Helmet released alongside the Kylo Ren Helmet for Star Wars Day, so it’s not surprising that discounts on this one are small so far. The completed model measures 8.5 x 4.5 x 4 inches and has an adjustable rangefinder antenna.

Jango Fett has received a lot of attention from Lego this year. The bounty hunter’s starship from Attack of the Clones joined the UCS lineup for Star Wars Day, and a smaller playset version of the Firespray-Class Starship launched in August.

$70 | Retired / In stock at Amazon

Lego discontinued the Clone Commander Cody Helmet in February 2025. Since then, the helmet has disappeared from most major retailers, but Amazon recently restocked the 766-piece set for its original $70 MSRP. Clone Wars and Bad Batch fans should check it out while they can. The completed model with display stand is 8 x 5 x 5.5 inches.

Lego Star Wars: Droideka & Mos Espa Podrace Diorama

Walmart has one other in-stock Lego Star Wars bundle deal featuring a set that’s retiring soon, too. Darth Maul’s Sith Infiltrator is normally $70 on its own, but you can pair it with the Darth Maul Mech for only $62 (was $88). Another notable Star Wars set on its way out is the popular 583-piece Droideka Destroyer Droid for $52 (was $65). Two Ultimate Collector Series Star Wars Lego sets are being discontinued: Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing Starfighter and massive Razor Crest Starship from The Mandalorian. The latter is on sale for a slight discount at Amazon.

There are currently 23 Lego Star Wars sets on the brink of retirement. Outside of the UCS builds, the list below focuses on the ones you can save money on right now. Multiple dioramas recreating scenes from the movies are discounted, including the Mos Espa Podrace from The Phantom Menace for $57 (was $80) and Boarding the Tantive IV from A New Hope for $44 (was $55). You can also get the 654-piece Tantive IV Starship display model for $64 (was $80). Those three sets and numerous others in the list below were part of the Lego Star Wars commemorative 25th anniversary series.

Heads up: The price of Lego Star Wars Mechs tends to jump considerably after retirement. So while the Luke Skywalker X-Wing Mech is selling for its full $16 MSRP, you won’t want to wait to long to snag one. Plus, look how cool this buildable action figure is:

Silent Hill f Achieves 1 Million Copies Sold In Less Than A Week

by admin September 30, 2025

Silent Hill f has already achieved a major sales milestone less than a week after its September 25 launch. The new mainline entry has already crossed the 1 million sales mark.

Konami states the 1 million sales number reflects digital and physical copies across all platforms since September 26. That means Silent Hill f achieved this milestone in four days. This early sales success complements a very positive critical reception to the game; Silent Hill f currently boasts an 86 percent critical score on Metacritic.  Silent Hill f is the first mainline entry in the series in over a decade, and unfolds in a rural Japanese village during the 1960s. It stars a teenage girl named Hinako who must fight for survival after a sinister fog sweeps through her town and transforms its residents into monsters.

These sales numbers must be especially reassuring for Konami as it continues its successful resurrection of the popular horror IP, following last year’s also well-received Silent Hill 2 remake. In terms of the series’ future,  Konami still has the mysterious Silent Hill: Townhall from Observation developer No Code and co-published by Annapurna Interactive. Most recently, Konami announced that a remake of the first Silent Hill game is in development. There’s Return to Silent Hill, a film adaptation of Silent Hill 2, which recently premiered its first trailer.

For more on Silent Hill f, you can read our review here. You can also listen to a few Game Informer editors discuss the game in this episode of The Game Informer Show podcast.
