In Full Bloom isn’t just about being a planet-devouring Sarlacc’s babysitter, it’s my brain on games showcase

by admin August 20, 2025

I drop the house into the great maw (not that one). It screams as it falls away from the clutches of my mouse clicker. It disappears from view, but there’s a sickeningly wet crunching that betrays its fate. Oh and the fact that the entity’s jaws immediately flare open once more, teeth and tongue dripping with anguish to cram vegetation, trees, towerblocks into its gullet.

This is In Full Bloom, a game that scores the full 10/10 in the wonderfully ironic naming category. Set in a greyscale universe sucked free of all hope and colour, it tasks you with accomplishing an impossible task. You’ve got to keep the infernal child of constant consumption happy by tossing an unending stream of junk into its mouth.

The demo I’ve just played for it has been out for a little while on Itch.io, while the Steam page foretelling a full release in 2026 went up a couple of months ago. The thing that led me to In Full Bloom today, of all days, was one tweet in a thread, which featured a picture of Swiss studio Obleak Games’ patch of Gamescom. I saw the giant mouth perched atop a dark planet, and decided this was a thing I had to play.

I’m glad I did. In Full Bloom’s described as a Katamari-like, and the truth is that it’s exactly what would happen if the folks who do Katamari were like ‘Right, how can we take everything that doesn’t make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end in this game, and flip it so that’s a feeling so overwhelming you won’t be able to forget it’. To put it another way, the game’s like jumping into a MeatCanyon video about ASMR. Being not just present among the skin-crawling proceedings, but winding the crank that powers their descent into even more horrific depths.

Ok, I might be being a bit dramatic, but if you dislike the sound of people eating, this isn’t the game for you. The demo has three stages – small mouth, big mouth, and bigger mouth. You start off with the first, feeding it detritus and colourless veg from a garden as it grows with each gulp. The entity’s young at this point, so it makes panicked baby squeals and gurgles amid the slurping and swallowing of its three-toothed maw. I think they get more intense if you stop shovelling food in, but honestly they made me so uncomfortable that I couldn’t entertain slowing down to find out.

Watch on YouTube

Big mouth’s grown up, so it has a full set of human gnashers and can gradually work its way up to chowing down a full cul-de-sac. Fences, trees, screaming houses. There’s also a bus doing merry laps around the creature – you can have your weird son try to catch it by pointing with the mouse, but I didn’t manage it. The lethargy of this movement, while saving In Full Bloom from being a fully static experience and undeniably fitting with the rest of its atmoshere, does mean there’s nothing akin to the frenetic rolling that gives good universe Katamari its upbeat tempo and fuels a lot of the fun.

The sense of satisfaction you get from plucking up increasingly ludicrous amounts and sizes of object is still there, but that sense of satisfaction has become terrifying, as you sacrifice moons to a continent-proportioned pit of despair.

The demo will need plenty of fleshing out before it’s a game I can see myself playing for more than one sitting. It’s carried a lot by the novelty of the weirdness. As of right now, it’s a top class metaphor for the mechanisms of capital, always desperate for more, demanding constant and unsustainable growth because as the game’s description says, “there is only one way”.

I reckon it’s more universal than just that, though. It might be because the experience is fresh in my mind, but I spent my time with it being reminded of how helping cover the biggest game showcases has often left me feeling so far in my career. I like video games, but when they’re being fired at you one after the other, in a barrage of double digit minutes or hours, they tend to just blend into an overwhelming soup of lights, faces, rambling voices, bangs, booms, instrumental swells, platforms, release dates, jangling Keighs.

By the time your eyes have adjusted to try and take in one, the next has already arrived, like scoops of ice cream being fired from a machine gun. In the rush of the moment, the job’s to be a speedy vessel of information, from the stream to the virtual page. Ice Cream. Vanilla. Travelling at 50mph. Could have been double scoop if £50.99 deluxe edition was bought. Publish.

There’s a great skill to it, and even more of a skill to being able to take all of this in and occasionally give some useful commentary, like ‘the consistency of that mint scoop as it flies by may hint at chocolate chips, which would be an improvement from the last one, the chiplessness of which I and many long-time fans disliked’. As with folks watching at home, there’s a thrill to just seeing which games pop up, but the adrenaline rush is tied to a love of the scramble.

There may well be a day when this work feels more like classic Katamari rolling to me, but for now it’s more like feeding In Full Bloom’s great gob. Speaking of which, oh god, I think it’s hungry again.

Sony Is Raising The Price Of Every PlayStation 5 Model Tomorrow, August 21

by admin August 20, 2025

Rising video game and console prices have frustrated consumers this year, and today, Sony is adding its flagship console to the list of products getting price hikes. In the United States, the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro are each increasing in price by $50.

According to a blog post from Sony Interactive Entertainment vice president of global marketing, Isabelle Tomatis, the change is due to “a challenging economic environment.” This brings the new prices for each device to the following:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

As of today, prices remain unchanged in other countries, but many of them faced price hikes earlier this year. This news comes a few months after Sony said it was considering raising its prices in the US, but it might not affect consoles. That was, obviously, not the case. Other instances of companies increasing prices lately include Nintendo increasing Switch 2 accessory prices, and Xbox raising its console and game prices back in May. Across the board, it’s a rough time to be paying for new games and hardware.

Meanwhile, Xbox announced its new handheld’s release date today, but won’t reveal its price quite yet, citing “macro-economic conditions.”

Tropico 7 announced for PC and consoles, and it’s coming to Game Pass on day one

by admin August 20, 2025

El Presidentes assemble! Tropico 7 – the latest entry in Kalypso Media’s Caribbean-set city building sim – is official and heading to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Game Pass next year.

The original Tropico debuted in 2001, melding elements of city building, resource management, and political wrangling that gave players the freedom to run their tropical island either as a feared dictator or peace-loving statesman. The series has changed hands multiple times since then, with developer Limbic Entertainment taking the reins for 2019’s Tropico 6.

As for the newly revealed Tropico 7, it’s being helmed by Gaming Minds Studios (Port Royale 4, Railway Empire 2) and features a new story campaign playing out across 5 maps. That’s alongside 20 additional sandbox maps, a random map generator, and 10 extra scenarios. There’s also talk of new terraforming tools, a new council feature serving as a focal point for your political machinations, a new nemesis in Victoria Guerra, and more.

Tropico 7 announcement trailer.Watch on YouTube

Tropico 7 arrives sometime next year for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5, and will be joining Xbox Game Pass on launch day. You’ll find the full list of currently announced features below.

  • Lead your nation to new heights: Tropico 7 tells El Presidente’s continuous success story across 5 campaign maps – starring himself, Penultimo and a new nemesis: Victoria Guerra.
  • More is more: Archipelagos, with the biggest islands ever in the series, await your rule, expanded with 10 extra scenarios, more than 20 sandbox maps, and endless possibilities with a random map generator.
  • Move mountains – literally: Erase them, create beaches, or even create entirely new islands! The new terraforming feature brings your megalomaniac dreams to life. Start that mammoth project – NOW!
  • Bollocks uhm… Politics: Navigate the snares and pits of internal politics, when you summon the different factions to your council, a new way to meet them face to face while you pulverize their dreams – or use them for a BIG DEAL to your own advantage.
  • Make the world your playground: Elections, election speeches and a vast portfolio of edicts depending on your political standing spice up your daily rule while you juggle foreign affairs and occasionally steal… uhm relocate a landmark to revel in its benefits.
  • Built to prosper: Strategically place buildings to make use of synergy effects, keep citizen satisfaction high, and fill any unused plots of land with beautiful parks in a freely customised size.
  • Generalissimo No. 1: Eliminate those pesky rebels and fend off foreign threats with a reworked military system enabling more direct control of your military units.
  • Always judge a book by its cover: Customise the appearance of your palace and El Presidente with new and creative options.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Sony Raising Price On PS5 Consoles In America Tomorrow

by admin August 20, 2025

Sony has announced that it is raising prices on all versions of the PlayStation 5 in America. The increased prices go into effect on August 21, giving folks little time to plan ahead of the price hike.

All new PS5 consoles will now cost $50 more in the United States. Here are the new prices:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” said Sony in a very short blog post announcing the news. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”

This is a developing story…

ROG Xbox Ally Handheld Launch Date Set For October, Features Steam Deck-Style Compatibility

ROG Xbox Ally Handheld Launch Date Set For October, Features Steam Deck-Style Compatibility

by admin August 20, 2025

A release date for the ROG Xbox Ally has been revealed, as the handheld gaming PC will be go on sale starting October 16. Microsoft hasn’t confirmed pricing for the devices yet, but it did explain how games will be optimized for these systems. One thing to note here is that there will be two different versions of the ROG Xbox Ally–a base model and a more premium “X” handheld–so performance will vary across them.

During its Gamecom 2025 livestream, Microsoft said that the base model Xbox Ally targets a resolution of 720p, while the Xbox Ally X aims for a 1080p resolution. Both units can run in one of three modes–Silent, Performance, and Turbo–and for frame rates, games that hit certain benchmarks will receive a specific compatibility tag.

Microsoft says that it has worked with game studios to optimize thousands of games for handheld compatibility, with the overall goal here being that you can install them and start playing right away. This has resulted in two tags that will accompany optimized games, similar to Valve’s Steam Deck Verified program for its handheld gaming PC:

Handheld Optimized

Games that are ready to go with default controller inputs, an intuitive text input method, accurate iconography, clear text legibility, and appropriate resolution in full-screen mode.

Mostly Compatible

Games that may require minor in-game setting changes for an optimal experience on handheld.

Additionally, there’ll be other tags that will give you an idea of how well a game will perform on the Xbox Ally:

Should perform well on your device

  • Games that run at 30fps or above

Should perform great on your device

  • Games that run at 60fps or above

Performance check not available yet

  • Games that haven’t been tested yet

Microsoft added that more technical features will also be made available in the future, including advanced shader delivery that preloads game shaders during download. This will make games run more smoothly and use less battery power on first play. Enhancements to the docking experience for the devices are also in the works and several accessories will be released for it as well.

The company also recently spoke about how handheld consoles like the Xbox Ally tie into its next-gen console plans, as Microsoft is looking to create a broad ecosystem for players that will allow them to play their games at home or on the go.

Black Ops 7 will let you level up your weapons in the campaign, and bring your Black Ops 6 weapons and operators into multiplayer

by admin August 20, 2025

The big Black Ops 7 media blowout has officially begun, kicking off, of course with last night’s gamescom Opening Night Live reveal. The trailer coincided with the release of plenty of new information covering many aspects of the game, with the promise of more to come.

There are, however, several new and returning features well worth diving into.

For one, Carry Forward, the feature that allows you to bring some of the content from last year’s game into the new one, is coming back. Just like with Modern Warfare 2 to Modern Warfare 3 in 2023 – when the feature was first introduced, Black Ops 7 is doing the same with Black Ops 6’s content.

Weapons, operators, XP tokens, GobbleGums (Zombies), skins and other cosmetic items from last year’s game will be usable in Black Ops 7’s multiplayer, as well as Warzone. This will kick off a few weeks post launch, with the start of Season One.

There are, of course, some exceptions. You won’t be able to use skins for equipment and Scorestreaks that don’t exist, or work differently, in the new game. Weapon camos will carry forward, but they’re only going to apply to BO6 weapons, not BO7’s.

The Black Ops 7 campaign, playable in up to four players in co-op, has its fair share of new innovations, too. We’ve covered the campaign’s Endgame, an open-ended co-op mission meant to be played multiple times that borrows from roguelites, RPGs, and extraction games.

But Treyarch is also introducing a new concept called Global Progression, which is something I am surprised took Call of Duty this long to implement. While we’ve been enjoying cross progression between multiplayer, co-op (Zombies etc.), and Warzone for years now, the campaign has always been left out of that.

In Black Ops 7, you earn XP as you play the campaign. What this means in practice is that you’ll be levelling up your weapon (even unlocking camos), and unlocking other challenges that transfer over to multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone.

In a blog post, Treyarch specifically named weapon Prestige (which is also coming back with BO7), standard weapon progression, camos, Calling Cards, daily challenges and much of the progression side of things.

Image credit: Treyarch, Raven Software, Activision.

Further building on that ethos of connected progression, Black Ops 7 is introducing the ability to share your Gunsmith weapon builds. These can be saved and sent directly to friends, but you can even generate a code for your build so anyone else can immediately use it without having to replicate it piece-by-piece.

More on the multiplayer side of things will be revealed on September 30 at Call of Duty: Next. The game’s beta will begin shortly after, running October 2-8. The full game arrives November 14 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

BioShock 4 studio Cloud Chamber lay off staff, as ex-Diablo lead Rod Fergusson comes aboard

BioShock 4 studio Cloud Chamber lay off staff, as ex-Diablo lead Rod Fergusson comes aboard

by admin August 20, 2025

2K have laid off an unspecified number of staff at Cloud Chamber, amid efforts to rework BioShock 4. These cuts come at the same time former Diablo lead Rod Fergusson joins as Cloud Chamber’s new studio head, taking up the position recently vacated by Kelley Gilmore.

A report from Bloomberg earlier this month revealed that the game had failed an internal progress check. Gilmore and creative director Hogarth de la Plante reportedly moved into different jobs as part of a resulting leadership shakeup. Despite all of this, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has insisted, amid chatting some nonsense about great being the new great, that the game will still make it to release.

That brings us to yesterday, when Bloomberg’s Jason Schrier reported that Cloud Chamber were letting folks go as they announced Fergusson’s impending arrival. IGN report that 2K haven’t said how many employees have been affected by the cuts, while publishing part of an email to staff from 2K president David Ismailer that aims to explain the reasoning behind them.

“Work on the next BioShock game has been underway for several years,” it reads. “While we’re excited about the foundational gameplay elements of the project, we’ve made the decision with studio leadership to rework certain aspects that are core to a BioShock game, and in doing so are reducing the size of the development team to focus on this work and give the game more time in development.”

BREAKING: BioShock 4 developer Cloud Chamber is laying off an unspecified number of staff.

Also, former Diablo boss Rod Fergusson is taking over as Cloud Chamber’s new studio head. More than a decade ago, he joined the troubled BioShock Infinite and helped salvage that game’s production.

The email reportedly concluded with Ismailer describing the multiple people losing their livelihoods and the hiring of one guy as making for a “day of mixed emotions”, before going full exec rah-rah speech about the state of BioShock. “These changes are rooted in 2K’s firm confidence in BioShock as one of the most beloved franchises, and our commitment to deliver the best game in franchise history,” he declared.

I’ve reached out to 2K for comment.

As for what the future looks like for BioShock 4, it’s clear why 2K have gone for ex-Blizzard man Fergusson. The veteran developer was previously brought in at Irrational games to help get 2013’s BioShock Infinite out of the door, having done the same for the likes of Gears of War.

Best of luck to the staff Cloud Chamber have let go.

The Most Dope Games We’ve Played During Gamescom 2025

by admin August 20, 2025

Gamescom 2025 has begun, and I’m on site in Cologne, Germany, checking out more than two dozen new and upcoming games, ranging from Hollow Knight: Silksong to The Outer Worlds 2 to 007 First Light and beyond! I’ll be doing individual write-ups for a lot of these games, but I’ll also be writing condensed quick-hit thoughts on the coolest games I’ve played so far, and you can read them right here (so bookmark this page, folks!).

The Most Dope Games We’ve Played During Gamescom 2025

Below, you’ll find a running list of the games I’ve played during Gamescom 2025. They’ll be listed in reverse-chronological order, so the latest game I’ve played will be at the top and the first game I played will be at the very bottom!

Hollow Knight: Silksong

It’s real, y’all. Hollow Knight: Silksong exists and is playable, and I checked out the game’s very first level, Moss Grotto. After a brief cutscene that shows Hornet trapped in a Cinderella-like carriage (that she then breaks out of), I take control. Immediately, Hornet is much faster than the first game’s protagonist, both as she platforms around and with her attacks. She has a new ability called Bind (used by pressing B on an Xbox controller) that heals her. However, you can’t spam this ability as it requires using a bar on screen that must be full.

It recharges over time and by defeating enemies, and I found it pretty easy to get it full for another Bind. Platforming around Moss Grotto feels a lot like 2017’s Hollow Knight, though Hornet is more nimble and can mantle up cliffs and platforms. The enemies here are easy to defeat, and it’s not until I fight the demo’s boss, Moss Mother, that I’m challenged. It’s a fun fight, but still mostly easy.

With the demo and my hands-on time with Silksong behind me, I’m excited to see what else awaits me in the full game. If this first level is any indication, it’s going to be a great Metroidvania, much like the first game. That said, I’m not convinced it’s going to break through the hype and make a mark on the genre like the first game did. I’m also not convinced it needs to, though.

For more, read my full Hollow Knight: Silksong hands-on thoughts here.

Resident Evil Requiem Trailer Shows Us More Of Grace’s Past

by admin August 20, 2025

Capcom showed up to Gamescom Opening Night Live with a new look at Resident Evil Requiem, and it told us a little bit more about Grace Ashcroft, the star of this next entry in the long-running horror series. There wasn’t much gameplay, but we did see an extended story segment showing Grace with her mother years before the main events of the game.

Some might call what Capcom showed a bit too spoilery for their liking, as we see the lead-up to Grace’s mother’s death eight years before the bulk of Requiem‘s story, though Capcom had already confirmed the status of Grace’s mother back when the game was officially announced back at Summer Game Fest. The short clip we saw showed both women trying to escape an incoming threat, but Grace’s mother is cagey on the details as she drags her daughter to safety. As it becomes clear that there is danger afoot, Grace has a panic attack her mother soothes, and shortly after she promises she’ll explain what’s going on soon, we get a hard cut to black and some gross sounds. We’ll probably find out specifics as we get closer to the game’s February 27 release date. Check out the trailer below:

There’s not much to go on here, so it’s unclear at this time how Requiem connects to previous Resident Evil games. Maybe it won’t have much connective tissue now that it’s focusing on a new protagonist, but if the last few games have taught us anything, it’s that Chris Redfield and company find some way to get involved sooner or later. Resident Evil Requiem is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, and maintains the first-person perspective of the past two entries. However, like Resident Evil Village, Requiem will have the option to play in third-person if you so choose.
