John Wick Director Is Excited About Gears Of War Movie And Making His First War Film

John Wick and Deadpool 2 director David Leitch’s Gears of War movie is progressing forward, with producer Kelly McCormick saying there is a “lot of energy” around getting the movie made due in part to the fact that a new game, Gears of War: E-Day, is coming out in 2026.

McCormick clarified, though, that the Gears of War movie for Netflix will not be ready in time for the game’s release date, whenever in 2026 that may be. “We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

McCormick and Leitch are married and run the production company 87North together. She added that Leitch is excited to make the Gears of War movie because it’s a genre he hasn’t done before: war. It’s also “a bit of sci-fi” that Leitch will get to make “in his own way,” McCormick said.

Leitch, a former stuntman who worked as Brad Pitt’s double in movies like Fight Club and Ocean’s Eleven, directed 2014’s John Wick with Chad Stahelski but was not credited due to Hollywood rules. He later directed Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy.

As for Stahelski, he’s making movies based on the video games Ghost of Tsushima and Rainbow Six.

The Gears of War movie’s latest script is being written by Jon Spaihts, who previously wrote Prometheus, Doctor Strange, and Passengers, along with Dune 1 and 2.

There isn’t much known about the Gears of War movie, but the game’s official social media account reacted to The Hollywood Reporter interview, writing, “Oh hell yeah! This my kind of shit!”

Gears of War seemingly won’t be Leitch’s next film, so no one should expect it to come out soon. The director is preparing to shoot Amazon MGM Studio’s 2026 heist thriller How to Rob a Bank, which has Nicholas Hoult and Anna Sawai attached to star in it.

Wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista has lobbied for years to play Marcus, and he does bear a strong resemblance to the character, but no casting announcements for the Gears of War movie have been made. Meanwhile, Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski has previously been adamant that Chris Pratt shouldn’t play any role in the film.

For nearly two decades, Gears of War has been an Xbox exclusive. However, that is changing soon with the launch of Gears of War: Reloaded on August 26 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Love and Deepspace wins Best Mobile Game at gamescom, throws shade at you know what

It’s been a heck of a year for Love and Deepspace, but it’s clearly on its way to more wider, global recognition. The Infold Games-developed romance visual novel has won big at gamescom this year.

Love and Deepspace grabbed the award for Best Mobile Game at the German show, beating other major – and much more widely known – titles.

This is an even bigger win for Love and Deepspace when you consider how much less popular it is than many of the MiHoYo games, such as Zenless Zone Zero, Genshin Impact, and Honkai: Star Rail.

In fact, LaDs was the only Chinese game given an award this year at all. MiHoYo, of course, is a fellow Chinese developer, and while the press release doesn’t mention it by name, it does make it a point to mention that fact. Indeed, Genshin Impact was itself among the list of nominees. This win also makes Love and Deepspace the first romance game to earn that award, which is a nice bonus.

In celebration, if you log in from now until August 28 you’ll earn various in-game rewards, so get on it.

Love and Deepspace is actually the second entry in the Mr. Love series. It’s much more internationally recognised that its predecessor, of course. It’s a recent arrival, too, having landed just last year.

The developer revealed at gamescom that the game has over 70 million players worldwide. It’s not just players, either, the game broke its all-time revenue record last month, according to data from Sensor Tower – with a lot of that coming from outside China. There’s a reason Love and Deepspace is consistently among the top ten Chinese mobile games in overseas revenue.

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch Trailer Puts Sam Fisher Back In Action

Sam Fisher hasn’t starred in a Splinter Cell video game in over a decade, but he’s getting his comeback this fall. Netflix has released a new trailer for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, an animated series that sends Sam on another mission, and it’s set to debut on October 14.

Michael Ironside voiced Fisher in most of the Splinter Cell games, but the leading role in this series will now be filled by Liev Schreiber. There aren’t a lot of story details in the trailer beyond Sam kicking some butt and taking names. But the trailer does pause long enough to focus on the grave of Douglas Shetland, one of Sam’s friends whom he was forced to kill when he went rogue. If the animated series is following the plot of the games, this would set the story somewhere around the Pandora Tomorrow/Chaos Theory period.

The other cast members currently confirmed for the series are Janet Varney as Anna “Grim” Grímsdóttir, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Zinnia McKenna, and Joel Oulette as Thunder. John Wick co-creator Derek Kolstad is the head writer and producer for Deathwatch, and the animation was provided by Sun Creature Studio and Fost.

Unfortunately, this may be the only Splinter Cell adaptation on the horizon. A live-action movie was in development for several years before the project was canceled last year. The most recent adaptation was a BBC Radio play called Splinter Cell: Firewall, which featured Andonis Anthony as Fisher.

Ubisoft announced a Splinter Cell remake in 2022, but hasn’t yet set a release date. The publisher also recently added Steam achievements to Splinter Cell: Blacklist, which was released in 2013.

It’s a free and simple territory control game from hobbyist dev snow-kiss, in which you switch your tiles between rock, paper or scissors to claim those of opponents. I’m not sure the idea has serious legs, but I like how it thickens when you have more than two participants and a more elaborate board setup.

I wonder if it could be the basis for a top-down open world exploration game in which you move a blob of tiles around by absorbing/being absorbed by surrounding tiles. You’d have to worry about the coherence of the blob, as the roshambo mechanics tend to result in stray colonies of tiles peeling away from the starting mass. Perhaps the view could centre on the largest clump of tiles.

Anyway just a few Thoughts. Assuming you’re also in England, Northern Ireland or Wales – apologies to Scottish readers for initially calling this a UK-wide bank holiday – what are you up to today? Here is some possibly mood-appropriate mid-campaign music.

NBA 2K26 is just a week out from launch for those who preorder or purchase the early-launch editions. When it gets here, players should expect to find that what was once the community’s biggest complaint has been scrubbed out of the game, according to its gameplay lead. Earlier this week, gameplay director Mike Wang told me in a chat from NBA 2K Community Day in San Francisco that 2K26 was designed from “day one” to eliminate what players most often found had plagued the game: “RNG”–short for random number generation–or what often felt like randomized outcomes.

The community, Wang told me, “felt like they didn’t have control over the outcomes of the shot or whatever it was on the court. That’s the biggest thing we addressed. Like, from day one, one of the points of emphasis was to make sure that [for] everything in the game, there’s a skill aspect to it, or it’s completely driven by skill, so that the gamer had the ability to dictate whether they did something right or wrong.

SGA follows his nearly perfect season by being on the cover of NBA 2K26.

“That’s probably most felt in shooting. Shooting is such a touchy subject. We’re doing green-or-miss [mechanics] again,” he explained, describing the way a perfectly timed shot will always go in, while a shot that misses the on-screen green timing window never will. This mechanic frustrated some players in 2K24, leading to the team creating different difficulty, or “shot timing” profiles for players to choose at will in last year’s game, but this created its own set of issues by pitting players with different profiles against one another.

“So, the scary thing about that, obviously, is that people who are really, really good at timing a button can be unstoppable like Steph Curry. So we’re trying to balance that with a stronger contest system, and it’s in a good spot now […] There are people who mastered this frame of this jump shot” but savvy defenders can now better “hold them in check if you play your defense and just play basketball.”

He added that the team learned a lot from past mistakes and explained how this year’s game aims to conclude a three-year debate over shooting gameplay by applying last year’s shot-timing profiles to specific modes and difficulties, evening the playing field on the basis of mode and difficulty level. “And [the idea in 2K25 was], ‘Okay, if you’re not into the timing [element], you can set this profile to be this lower-skilled one.’ So we’ve taken that concept, and basically, that’s what Rookie and Semi-Pro and Pro [difficulties and their related modes] feel like. It’s like, you could be a little sloppy with your timing, but still play the game and have fun. Then, when you move up in the difficulty to the higher ones, those feel more like, ‘Okay, if I don’t really master my shots or learn my players, then I’m gonna miss shots.'”

In addition to the game’s WNBA mode, women will now be playable in MyTeam, too.

The debate over NBA 2K shot mechanics and green timing windows has raged for years now, and from the outside looking in, the process seems dizzying. I asked Wang what it’s like trying to appease every corner of the game’s massive audience, with differing and sometimes mutually exclusive ideas on how shooting ought to behave.

With a (perhaps only half-joking) fatigued exhale, he told me, “It’s really hard.” Like in recent years, the debate over shooting mechanics will come down to the data. Those are really only visible once millions of people are playing it at once and the series’ analytics-obsessed community starts to pick it apart. That process begins next week, when NBA 2K26 launches for early-edition players on August 29.

2017’s Hollow Knight just reached a new all-time peak concurrent-player record on Steam, and the achievement came just after developer Team Cherry announced the release date for its sequel, Silksong.

Hollow Knight reached an all-time peak concurrent record of 23,819 on Steam today, August 22. Measuring a game’s popularity by Steam concurrent numbers is never a perfect or complete encapsulation of a game’s popularity, and Hollow Knight being an exclusively single-player game that doesn’t rely on people playing at the same time muddies the waters as well. But what is evident here is that Hollow Knight’s popularity on Steam is growing in the wake of the big Silksong reveal.

Now Playing: Hollow Knight: Silksong – Official Release Date Reveal Gameplay Trailer

Hollow Knight’s previously Steam concurrent record of around 20,000 players was achieved in May 2022. All of this data comes from SteamDB.

Steam’s own sales data shows that Hollow Knight jumped into the top 50 overall best-selling games on the platform. The game is also available on console platforms, but sales or engagement data is not available. Hollow Knight is also available on Game Pass (and Silksong will be as well).

At least three games have already been delayed due, in part, to Silksong. The game is set for release on September 4, and it’s been a long time coming.

“Hollow Knight: Silksong appears to be exactly what we all should have expected: a strong, well-designed, visually lovely game that carries forward the aesthetic and design philosophies of the original with thoughtful, if not earth-shattering, updates,” GameSpot’s Steve Watts wrote after going hands-on with Silksong at Gamescom this week.

Nebula Award-winning author R.F. Kuang returns this week with a new fantasy novel. Pitched as Dante’s Inferno crossed with Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi, Katabasis is a 560-page novel that takes place at a magical university and the underworld. The highly anticipated standalone novel releases August 26, and publisher Harper Voyager is commemorating the launch with a gorgeous collectible hardcover. Katabasis Deluxe Limited Edition is available for $24.48 (was $35) at Amazon and Walmart.

After the first printing of Katabasis sells out, readers will have to settle for the standard edition, which means you’ll miss out on the eye-catching sprayed page edges, lavish case, and illustrated endpapers. Considering that Amazon now also has a store page for the standard edition–for only two bucks less–the Deluxe Limited Edition is possibly close to selling out.

R.F. Kuang’s latest fantasy novel revolves around a pair of PhD students, Alice Law and Peter Murdoch, who study Magick at a fictional Cambridge University. When their academic advisor Professor Jacob Grimes dies in what sounds like a classroom exercise gone terribly wrong, Alice blames herself. She couldn’t stand the guy, but as the best magician alive, Jacob’s recommendation letter could jumpstart her career in Magick. And he hadn’t written recommendation letters before his untimely death.

Described as academic rivals, Alice and Peter join forces and risk their own lives to try to save their futures–and Jacob, who happens to be in literal Hell. And so the pair of brainy, aspirational magicians take a trip to the depths of Hell. But all of their training didn’t prepare them for what Hell is actually like.

The title comes from Greek myths that refer to a descent to Hell as a katabasis. The publisher calls Katabasis “2025’s most unexpected love story,” in case you were wondering whether this is an enemies-turned-lovers situation. And while it is, in a way, I’ve read it, and it really does subvert your expectations in this regard.

The 560-page Deluxe Limited Edition hardcover has decorative sprayed edges featuring the college and the underworld. The dust jacket artwork shows Alice and Peter descending a winding staircase surrounded by bookshelves. This 3D representation of their journey is also depicted on the embossed front cover when you remove the dust jacket. The Deluxe Limited Edition also has exclusive endpapers designed to resemble pages from Alice’s notebook with equations, tables, and diagrams.

Signed copies of the Deluxe Limited Edition were available at Barnes & Noble for $35, but it’s currently sold out.

Big fans of Kuang’s work can import the international limited edition from UK bookshops like Waterstones–though shipping costs and potential tariffs could be rough–or buy a copy from a US reseller on Amazon for around $50.

Large Print editions of Katabasis are available in paperback, and the UK version is roughly half the price compared to the US Large Print edition.

Katabasis is also available as a $15 Kindle ebook and Audible audiobook narrated by Morag Sims and Will Watt.

Kuang is one of the most prolific and successful young writers working in fiction today. Despite only just turning 29 earlier this year, Katabasis is Kuang’s sixth novel. In 2018, Harper Voyager published Kuang’s debut novel, The Poppy War, when she was 22–but she was only 20 when she signed the contract. The first in a grimdark historical fantasy trilogy set in a fictionalized version of Kuang’s native China, The Poppy War was followed up by The Dragon Republic in 2019 and The Burning God in 2020. The award-winning series is available in multiple physical formats, including a budget-friendly paperback box set, hardcover, and trade paperback.

Last November, Harper published The Poppy War Deluxe Collector’s Edition with sprayed edges, illustrated endpapers, embossed visual effects, and a fully illustrated dust jacket. The Poppy War Collector’s Edition hardcover is discounted to $24.29 (was $45) at Amazon. The Dragon Republic Deluxe Collector’s Edition released in June and is on sale for $26 (was $45). Though not confirmed yet, we imagine The Burning God will get a matching Collector’s Edition of its next year.

After completing the trilogy, Kuang shifted gears to speculative fiction in Babel: Or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution. Yes, that’s a very long title. Babel is a fascinating alternate history that, like Katabasis, revolves around academia. It won the 2022 Nebula Award for Best Novel.

Kuang changed genres once again with her riveting 2023 novel Yellowface. The satirical novel takes aim at racial diversity in publishing. If you like audiobooks, Helen Laser’s narration of Yellowface is wildly entertaining.

August has brought a number of other notable new fantasy and sci-fi novels, including Charlie Jane Anders’ Lessons in Magic and Disaster, Gareth Brown’s The Society of Unknowable Objects, Louis Sachar’s The Magician of Tiger Castle, and Yasuhiko Nishizawa’s The Man Who Died Seven Times.

Pokemon TCG Pocket’s New Expansion Features A Legendary Trio, Launches August 28

Pokemon TCG Pocket is getting another new expansion on August 28. The update is called Secluded Springs, and it will highlight Pokemon from the Johto region, including a powerful legendary trio.

In Secluded Springs, players will encounter fan-favorite Pokemon as they were originally discovered in the Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver video games, including the powerful Legendary trio: Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. In addition to Johto, the expansion also features Pokemon from the Hoenn region. Some of the new cards can be seen in the trailer below.

According to the official Pokemon website, Suicune will appear on a new binder cover and display-board backdrop, and both will debut on Sunday, August 31. Players can also expect a variety of in-game events to pop up throughout September.

The first event for Secluded Springs will be the Zoroark Drop Event, which lets players compete in special solo battles to obtain Promo Pack A Series Vol. 12. The Zoroark Drop Event runs from September 3-13, and a Bonus Week event arrives on September 8 with missions that reward pack hourglasses and other items.

Later in the month, players can expect the Water-type Pokemon Mass Outbreak event. This event kicks off on September 26, with cards relating to water-type Pokemon appearing in rare picks and bonus picks.

Mega Evolutions will be coming to the game later this fall. While there’s no release date announced yet, three of the upcoming Mega Pokemon cards can be seen here.

If you haven’t picked up a microSD Express Card for your Nintendo Switch 2, you should check out the 512GB SanDisk Gameplay at Walmart. The SanDisk Gameplay has the same specs as the $120 SanDisk card found at Amazon, Best Buy, and even Walmart. The key difference between the two is price: The SanDisk Gameplay 512GB microSD Express is just $78.

The SanDisk Gameplay is only sold at Walmart. Due to its exclusivity and low price, the card has sold out numerous times in recent weeks. It’s in stock as of August 22. The SanDisk Gameplay is one of only two 512GB microSD Express Cards priced under $100 right now. The other one is from Walmart-owned budget tech brand Onn. The 512GB Onn microSD Express is only $65.77. If you don’t think you need 512GB of extra storage, Onn’s 256GB model is only $35.77, roughly $25 less than the officially licensed Samsung 256GB microSD Express Card.

The Onn Express Cards regularly sell out, but Walmart consistently replenishes its inventory. Sometimes these cards are only sold to customers located in specific US regions, so availability near you can vary on a day-to-day basis.

We rounded up every microSD Express at Walmart and Amazon that we could find below. At this time, the only officially licensed option is the 256GB Samsung microSD Express. SanDisk is making its own Nintendo-themed edition, but it’s still unknown when it will arrive and if it will move beyond. 256GB. The microSD Express market is still quite small, but the Switch 2 is the first major consumer device to use the ultra-fast format. The number of options has doubled multiple times over since Nintendo announced the Switch 2 requires microSD Express to expand storage.

Nintendo Switch 2 storage space can disappear fast

The Nintendo Switch 2 has a 256GB onboard SSD. On the surface, this is a big leap forward, since it’s four times larger than the Switch OLED (64GB) and eight times larger than the original Switch and Switch Lite (32GB). But the Switch 2’s ability to run more graphically intensive games also means larger file sizes. For example, the upcoming Switch 2 exclusive Kirby Air Riders is listed at 25GB, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Switch 2 edition is 20GB, and Mario Kart World is 22GB.

You can save your storage space for those first-party games by grabbing physical editions, because Nintendo-published games have the full game file on the card. For third-party titles, outside of rare exceptions like Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, physical games for Switch 2 are using Game-Key Cards. These are low-capacity cards that essentially serve as unlock keys to download the game from the eShop. So if you buy the physical edition of Madden NFL 26, you’ll still need to download the majority of the game’s 55.3GB file from the eShop. A bunch of notable upcoming Switch 2 games with Game-Key Card editions also have large file sizes, including Borderlands 4 (48.8GB), Persona 3 Reload (25.4GB), and Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero (25GB).

Because of Game-Key Cards and larger file sizes for AAA games, some Nintendo Switch 2 owners will run out of storage space faster than they did on the original Switch.

microSD Express: What is it?

The Express format is a recent advancement in the semiconductor industry that hasn’t been widely adopted by manufacturers just yet. If you’re wondering why Express cards seem so expensive compared to the UHS-I cards you used on the original Switch console and most devices, it all comes down to speeds. For example, the SanDisk Ultra 512GB microSD Card has up to 150MB/s read speed, and the SanDisk Gameplay 512GB Express Card has 880MB/s–it’s nearly six times faster. Express cards are markedly faster than SATA SSDs; the prices make more sense with this context.

Samsung and SanDisk are widely considered the top brands for microSD cards. Since SanDisk’s Nintendo-licensed card isn’t available yet, Samsung is the only “official” option.

At $60–or $59 at Walmart–the Samsung microSD Express is far more reasonably priced than the pricey Nintendo-themed SanDisk cards for original Switch. If you opt for a 256GB Express, we’d go with this one or the Onn Express Card at Walmart–if it’s available in your region. The Walmart-branded card saves you about $25, and it technically has better specs.

We’ve included read/write speeds for each card on this list. Read speeds range between 800-900MB/s, but it’s unlikely you’d ever notice a difference between Samsung’s 800MB/s read speed and Lexar’s 900MB/s speed.

The Nintendo-licensed Samsung card has the slowest write speed on this list. At face value, this sounds bad, but really it signifies what’s important and what isn’t. If the officially licensed card can write 400MB/s, that means the Switch 2 doesn’t benefit from higher speeds.

While it won’t matter for Switch 2, if you think there’s a chance you’ll upgrade to a higher-capacity card and repurpose this one for a different Express-compatible device, write speeds could become more of a consideration. But to be clear, 400MB/s is still pretty fast.

As mentioned, the SanDisk Gameplay 512GB microSD Express Card is currently only available at Walmart. It appears to be an exclusive card with small branding alterations. The regular SanDisk model has “microSD Express” written across its red stripe, whereas this one has “Gameplay” on the red stripe and “Express” below it on the right. Do this differences matter at all? Not in the slightest.

Here’s what matters: the SanDisk Gameplay is exactly the same as the regular 512GB model from a technical and performance perspective. And yet, you save around $40 by purchasing the Gameplay version.

The 512GB Gameplay is only six bucks more than the 256GB regular edition and less than $20 more than the 128GB model. The Gameplay edition is only available with 512GB.

If you go with SanDisk, the Gameplay is the obvious choice. In terms of 512GB microSD Express Cards, only Walmart’s Onn brand is cheaper, and that one isn’t always available in all regions and has slightly slower speeds.

Note on availability: These cards often sell out and are sometimes only available in certain regions across the US. If you want one, we’d recommend checking Walmart daily, because both models have sold out many times since the Switch 2’s launch.

The Walmart-owned tech brand Onn is known for its budget prices, and that remains true with its microSD Express Cards. The 256GB model is the cheapest microSD Express Card you can by today. The 512GB edition cost less than most 256GB Express cards from other brands.

If you’re thinking the prices are too good to be true, it’s worth noting that these cards are made by Lexar. The Onn cards have the same write speed as the Lexar Play Pro, but the Play Pro is 100MB/s faster for reading. That said, the 512GB Lexar costs close to double the price.

Anecdotally, I’ve been using the 512GB model since launch day and haven’t experienced any issues.

Walmart says the cards are “water, shock, temperature, and magnet proof.” Your purchase includes a one-year limited warranty.

SanDisk’s regular microSD Express Card is available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB models. All three capacities offer the same 880MB/s read speed, but, as noted above, there are differences in write and sustained write speeds.

At the moment, the prices for all three are pretty high compared to other cards on this list. Ironically, the main reason why these don’t offer solid value is because SanDisk’s 512GB Gameplay Express Card exists.

SanDisk will be releasing a Nintendo-licensed microSD Express Card with a Mario red color scheme and logo, but a release date still hasn’t been revealed. We do know that the licensed edition is the same card with a different look–just like the SanDisk Gameplay situation.

SanDisk currently manufactures 128GB and 256GB models of its microSD Express Cards.

The Lexar Play Pro is the only microSD Express Card from a major brand that currently has a 1TB model. The 1TB Play Pro is sold out more often than not, and restocks for the $200 card go fast. We found a listing on Walmart for a 2TB Play Pro, so it will be interesting to see how much that one sells for.

Popular budget tech brand PNY has 128GB and 256GB microSD Express Cards. Both models are the cheapest in their respective capacities on Amazon.

GameStop sells branded microSD Express Cards, too. It’s unknown which manufacturer makes the card, but we’d stay clear of these because the write speed isn’t included on the product page. Even though the read speed is what matters most for Switch 2, we’d never recommend buying a storage device without knowing the write speed. Plus, you can get 256GB and 512GB models from known brands for less.

GameStop is one of the few companies offering a 1TB model, but it’s almost always sold out. The 512GB model is routinely sold out, too. We suspect this stems from very small print runs, not popularity. These cards only have a handful of customer reviews.

128GB – $48 | 512GB – $115

TeamGroup is a well-regarded budget manufacturer of microSD cards. The Apex is TeamGroup’s first card with Express tech. The Apex has only been available for a few weeks, but the 128GB and 512GB models are worth keeping on your radar for price drops.

TeamGroup’s prices are often noticeably lower than competitors. That’s not the case right now, but we wouldn’t be surprised if that changes in the future. For example, TeamGroup’s A2 Pro Plus 1TB microSD card regularly sells for around $60. To be clear, the A2 Pro does not work on Switch 2–though it is a solid option for the original Switch and Steam Deck.

A decade is a long period of time, but for Metal Gear Solid fans, it’s an eternity. Fortunately, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater launches at the end of the month, bringing a classic from the original series into the modern age of gaming. But beyond that? Expect the future of Metal Gear Solid to be handed over to a new generation of developers.

Metal Gear veterans Noriaki Okamura and Yuji Korekado recently spoke about how they were preparing to hand over the franchise to a younger team if Konami ever decides to produce a brand-new Metal Gear Solid game.

“One of the reasons why we brought in a lot of fresh meat–all the new, younger developers–is because, not only did we want to give them a chance to figure out how to create and develop a Metal Gear game, but also give them a chance to experience the game themselves,” Okamura said to Rolling Stone. “And we’ll still be here for a while, but right now the goal is to build a team that could carry on the legacy on our behalf and could produce, hopefully in the future, more exciting games.”

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is designed to be a bridge for that idea, as Okamura and Korekado view it as having the potential to reenergize the franchise and draw in new creators. Korekado explained that the seasoned developers working on the game were able to incorporate feedback from younger members on the team that would help modernize the game, while still retaining the original elements that made this entry in the series so captivating when it was first released in the 2000s.

The future of Metal Gear Solid is also one that will likely not involve series creator Hideo Kojima, as following his exit from Konami, the industry legend has been busy with multiple projects at his studio, like Death Stranding and its sequel, OD, and a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, Phsyint.

Kojima has also spoken about how all the demanding work of creating a video game has begun to take a mental and physical toll on him as he grows older, but he still plans to remain as creative for as long as possible–or at least until he becomes the first person to make a game in space. He’s also not planning to play Metal Gear Solid Delta.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater launches for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on August 28, and we gave it a 9/10 in our review. “Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is a safe but successful modernization of a beloved classic,” Tamoor Hussain wrote in GameSpot’s Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater review.
