Out very soon, Helldivers 2’s giant Terminid caving update is a feast of nods to Aliens and Dune, plus dragons

by admin August 27, 2025

Helldivers 2’s homaging of Starship Troopers and/or parodying of real-life fascist interventionalism continues with Into the Unjust, a sizeable game update that will take you out to the Terminid Hive Worlds for a spot of cave combat. According to multiple geographers interviewed by RPS, caves are located underground. That’s going to cause problems if, for example, your entire military strategy depends on being able to call in air support whenever you choose. The same geographers also allege that caves are dark. That’s going to cause problems if you like to see the things you’re shooting at.

Helldivers 2 Into the Unjust launches 2nd September, and why read the rest of this evidently stupid news piece when you can just watch this seven minute “deep dive” (comedy whoopee cushion sound effect)?

Watch on YouTube

Did you skip the video? Bless you for your loyalty to the written word. Your reward is a hasty summary of Into The Unjust from me, plus more bad jokes. Basically, Hive Worlds are big jaggedy deserts made out of congealed snot and custard. The Terminids here appear vastly more annoying than the ones you’ll find on, lol, Super Earth, because they have the ability to burrow.

That extends to the Chargers, who can actually charge while burrowing. I would need to consult with the geographers again, but I’m not sure that should be allowed. At the very least, they should have to use a new word for it. I would recommend “churrowing” but that makes it sound like you’re being assaulted by delicious fried dough. “Barging” is already a word, unfortunately, and “burraging” sounds like you tripped and bit your tongue while ordering an artillery strike. Can we please just move onto the next paragraph already.

There are two new types of mission to undertake on Hive Worlds. Firstly, journeys underground in search of a horrible giant lung that’s coughing up a bunch of poison fog. These missions readily evoke Aliens, and naturally put a strong emphasis on teamwork than many surface-level shoot-outs: in darker spots, one player may need to shoulder flashlight duties, sacrificing participation in the carnage for the good of the squad. I’m sure this won’t lead to any broken friendships.

The second type of mission sees you escorting a mobile oil drill with a big cannon on it. It’s Dune and also, a pisstake of US oil politics. It seems like the new Dragonroach enemies will be a particular hindrance during these missions: they can fly and have acidic breath. The key to prevailing over Dragonroach appears to be forcing them to land by blasting their wings, and if that isn’t grounds for modding Fus Ro Dah functionality into Helldivers 2, my name isn’t Hey You, You’re Finally Awake.

The video includes details of some forthcoming Helldivers 2 warbonds, aka DLC packs. There’s a crossover with Halo 3: ODST, which has been in the wind for a while, and lets you wreak war with such UNSC armaments as the Battle Rifle and Magnum (but will it capture the interplay between the former’s shield-stripping and the latter’s finishing shots?). There’s also a Dust Devil warbond tailored to the new Hive World maps, which includes an assault rifle with incendiary rounds, a new napalm rocket, a gas harpoon, and a missile silo helpfully housed in a hellpod.

Some recent Helldiverse happenings: they’ve put a stop to an exploit that let you warp out of the extraction shuttle. They’re handing out free capes like they’re going out of style – a foolish observation of mine, for what is style if not cape. They’re also not making Helldivers 3 anytime soon, unless Helldivers 2 updates itself so much that it becomes Helldivers 3 by default.

The Newly Revived Acclaim Is Hosting A Showcase Next Month

by admin August 27, 2025

On March 4, it was announced that defunct publisher Acclaim had been resurrected (again), this time as an indie publisher. After months of waiting, it’s time to learn what new games will bear that iconic rainbow logo thanks to the publisher’s first digital showcase.

On September 10, Acclaim will host the Play Acclaim showcase to reveal its lineup of upcoming titles. The news follows a series of teaser trailers posted to the publisher’s official YouTube channel (such as the one below), which is where the presentation will be broadcast. Play Acclaim will air at 11:30 a.m. PT/2:30 p.m. ET.

Acclaim was a household name in the ‘80s and ‘90s as a publisher for many well-known games and franchises, including Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, Turok, numerous WWE titles, and even more licensed games. The publisher closed its doors in 2004 due to poor sales and failure to pay royalties to its licensors. The brand was acquired and revived in 2006 as Acclaim Games, a totally different entity focused on offering free online games from other territories. Acclaim Games was then shuttered in 2010.

This revived Acclaim will focus on the independent game scene, promising to provide funding, marketing, and PR support to smaller studios. Acclaim’s advisory board consists of Russell Binder at Striker Entertainment, Mark Caplan at Ridge Partners, and pro wrestler Jeff Jarrett at Global Force Entertainment.

“We’re not here to chase ghosts,” said Alex Josef, CEO of Acclaim in today’s press release. “We’re here to take the energy and chaos that made Acclaim unforgettable and channel it into something new. The old screens are cracking, and what’s coming through is something exciting and different.”

Lumines Arise’s new demo reveals Burst mode, the game’s answer to Tetris Effect’s Zone, and the demo is out now

by admin August 27, 2025

In our house, the first level of the new Lumines Arise demo already has a name. The demo hasn’t been with us long – and it’s available for PS5 and Steam until 11.59pm local time on the 3rd of September, so get on it – but it’s made an impact. That first level has made an impact. I call it Cadbury Physics.

Super quick: Lumines is a puzzle game about sorting blocks into groups of two colours. The blocks drop into the horizontal playing area wonderfully jumbled, and you rotate them, match the colours, and ideally use them to build squares of 2×2 blocks of the same colour. You then grow these squares by adding more blocks of the same colour until the timeline sweeps through and cancels them out. Points for you! And more space to play with! And onwards and upwards. Beautiful.

But the colours, and the theme and music surrounding them, change with each level. And in the first level of the Lumines Arise demo? Well. Hard to say, really. You’re either deep in space or diving down into the secrets of the quantum universe. One of the colours you’re matching is less a colour and more a little galaxy captured in an oily bubble. Form 2×2 squares and it sort of blobs outwards into a bigger bubble. It’s less bottle galaxy and more puddle galaxy, and it clashes gorgeously with the other strain of blocks in this level, which are jagged little gold leaf diamonds.

Far-flung space? Deep within an atom? Whatever’s the truth, it all looks strangely delicious. Houston? We have a tasty problem. It’s like a chocolate advert out there. I can just imagine ripping the foil off those diamonds to reveal the chocolate melting within, and then dipping them in the syruppy quantum goo from those puddle galaxies. It would be irradiating, sure, but it would be such a sweet way to go. The whole level feels like a black forest gateaux baked by Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The thing about Lumines is that you can talk about it forever just by talking about the small things, and Arise is no different. Small things: the way the camera now zooms in slightly when you’ve started a square going, as if the universe notices your work and is leaning in, eager to see how it turns out. Small things: the way the “Bonus” text on the first level turns to a coffee swirl of vapour as it melts away. Small things: the way the chalk circles in the second level – this level has yet to have a name in our house – sometimes jangle into scribbly squares when the music dictates that they must.

The shape of (not) you. | Image credit: Enhance

And yet there are big things to talk about, too. Lumines Arise is basically Lumines getting the Tetris Effect treatment. The sound and fury has been dialled up. The graphical approach is glossy and melting one minute, and geckos dancing while campfires flicker in the darkness the next. But just as Tetris Effect introduced Zone play, which allowed you to break the game by entering a bizarre state of being in which you could grow a Tetris stack until it was six, eight, ten rows deep, Lumines Arise gets Burst mode.

Oh Burst mode! Tantalising and terrifying. It’s a game-changer. It’s a game disruptor. And yet, like Zone, it feels so simple.

Burst mode is built up through regular play. As you clear squares, your Burst percentage meter at the top of the timeline ticks upwards. When it reaches 100, you squeeze both triggers and time coughs and turns inwards on itself. Suddenly, you can grow a single colour of squares without the timelines clearing them as they sweep past. (A number above the timeline tells you how many sweeps you have left.)

But there’s more. As you grow your single colour square, blocks of the opposing colour will regularly shoot into the air as you play, and will hang, suspended above the playing field until Burst mode is over. Eventually, you’ll have grown your square as much as you can, and you’ll have run out of timeline sweeps – Lumines is a really weird game to talk about, isn’t it? – and then you get a double-whammy of scoring. The square you grew finally disappears, showering you in points, and then all those other-coloured blocks that had been suspended overhead suddenly fall back into play, and will probably lead to a decent amount of squares themselves.

Tetris who? BTW, there’s a multiplayer game type included in the demo that sees you firing garbage blocks back and forth by using Burst. | Image credit: Enhance

Here’s the thing about Burst mode. It’s wonderful, but it’s also terrifying. Sure, you can use it to get out of trouble. You can actually trigger it once the meter’s above 50 percent for this purpose, it just won’t last as long. But to get the most out of it, you have to understand that while the whole thing looks chaotic, it requires absolute precision if you’re to do it justice. Sure, it looks like the universe is erupting around you and that time itself is stuttering, but you need to have a plan for all those incoming blocks. You need to know when to rotate right and when to rotate left and when to drive them all home and grow that square.

I hope it goes without saying, but I absolutely love this. With the chain block, Lumines has always been the most geologically minded of puzzle games – a game that’s all about drilling down into the earth, laying seams of dynamite and then touching them off. But now there’s this anti-gravity component where detritus is sorted and flung into the aire and just waits there while you create the perfect environment for it to return to. I’m still getting my head around it. I’m still trying to bring Burst mode into focus with the way I lay out the grid to get the most from that chain block. I’m still trying to rumble the secrets of this strange physical universe, one delicious puddle galaxy at a time.

KPop Demon Hunters Is Netflix’s Most Popular Movie Of All Time

by admin August 27, 2025

After two months on the streaming service, KPop Demon Hunters has officially surpassed Red Notice to become Netflix’s most popular movie ever. Consider the Honmoon sealed, hunters.

The animated musical took the crown on August 26, lapping the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Ryan Reynolds-led action comedy by six million streams. As of right now, KPop Demon Hunters has been viewed 236 million times, and that’s not even counting its limited-time singalong screenings in movie theaters this past weekend.

I hadn’t really been paying attention to what the most popular Netflix movies were until the Sony Animation film launched in June, but I was flabbergasted to see Red Notice, a movie with big names and no notable cultural cache, had such a massive gap between it and former runner-up Carry On, another movie I could not identify if you put a gun to my head. I know Don’t Look Up and Bird Box, though, which are also on the top 10 list. Shoutout to the children and families who have had Huntr/x’s tale on loop for the past two months, as you’ve no doubt been instrumental in securing this victory.

As a fan of the film, I’m happy to see KPop Demon Hunters soar, especially as it defies all expectations the companies behind it had for it. It’s such a colossal miscalculation on Sony and Netflix’s parts that they clearly didn’t anticipate this film would become such a cultural juggernaut. A better-prepared company would have dolls of the titular trio in the toy aisle of every store and costumes up for preorder for Halloween, and given the film more time in theaters than a two-day limited run. Nevertheless, it has become a huge hit with viewers of all ages. So long as Netflix lets the team cook and meaningfully continue the story, I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

Where To Find Fortnite Helicopters – All Choppa Locations In Chapter 6 Season 4

by admin August 26, 2025

It’s been an extremely eventful start to Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4, with Epic already pulling this season’s medallions from circulation for being too overpowered and ridiculous after two weeks of backlash. Fortunately, Fortnite is always introducing new ways of being absurd and over-the-top, and this week’s update is proof of that, as it added two very silly new vehicles: the Roly-Poly bug, and Hammerhead Choppas.

The Roly-Polys are extremely easy to find since they’re just lying on the ground all over the place. If you see bugs running around, then there are some Roly-Polys, too. There are enough of those for everybody, more or less. But that’s not the case with Hammerhead Choppas, of which only a handful spawn each match.

It makes a lot of sense for there to be more Roly-Polys than Hammerhead Choppas. The Choppas, which are new, much cooler-looking versions of Fortnite’s old helicopters, have enough room for a full squad of players and a hired NPC. Roly-Polys, by contrast, can only fit a single player each–they’re essentially new, bouncier versions of Ballers. So, while there are dozens of Roly-Polys that spawn around the island each match, there are only a few Hammerhead Choppas.

Where to find the Hammerhead Choppas in Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4

There are five guaranteed Hammerhead Choppas at four main spawn locations–one of the spots actually has two of them. The Hammerhead Choppas spawn at each of the three OXR outposts, which is where the “push back the bugs” events happen, and there are two that spawn at OXR HQ to the north of the center of the island. All five of these Choppas appear to have a 100% spawn chance.

That said, there are also a few other spots where Hammerhead Choppas have some unknown chance of spawning. You can see the spawn locations in the handy map we’ve provided below. Black stars indicate a spot where a Hammerhead Choppa may spawn, red stars indicate a guaranteed Hammerhead Choppa spawn, and red with a black outline indicates two guaranteed Choppas.

There are five guaranteed spawns (red) and three other potential spawn locations (black) for Hammerhead Choppas.

The guaranteed Hammerhead Choppas won’t just be on the ground, of course. The reason they spawn in these locations is that OXR has all the helipads. So when you’re in one of those places trying to nab your fun new method of air transportation, look for it on platforms like this.

For those locations where there’s only a chance of a Choppa spawn, however, they’ll be parked on the grass.

How to use the loudspeaker on Hammerhead Choppas

Fortnite is celebrating the arrival of Hammerhead Choppas to Battle Royale by adding two weekly quests, neither of which is particularly complicated. The first is to damage players from 50 meters or more away while in a Choppa, and while the Choppa itself has no weapons, you presumably would–all you have to do is switch to a passenger seat and fire away. You don’t have to kill anybody. You just need to hit a few shots. And shots on the bugs counts, for the record.

All five guaranteed Hammerhead Choppas spawn on platforms like this.

But while anybody who plays Fortnite has shot some enemies before, the other Choppa quest involves a non-standard mechanic that is completely unique to Choppas: the ability to blast music over a loudspeaker while you fly around. There’s a quest to do just that within 100 meters of an enemy player. It’s not a difficult task, but since it’s only something Choppas can do, and Choppas aren’t in the game very much, most folks probably don’t know about it.

Fortunately, this quest is as easy at they come, because you can turn on the loudspeaker by pressing the emote button–that’s down on the d-pad on a controller, or B on a keyboard. If you didn’t immediately complete the quest when you fired it up, just fly around until you find somebody. Considering that a 100-meter radius is pretty large, it’ll probably happen by accident.

Wily FPS modders remake the original Quake from memory alone – imagine if triple-A remasters worked this way

by admin August 26, 2025

A Quake modding group have just polished off a game jam in which they challenged themselves to recreate every singleplayer map in id Software’s 1996 FPS from memory alone. That is, they were forbidden from replaying the original game before they started. As Slipseer user iLike80sRock puts it, “if somehow id1 was wiped off of all computers in the world, do we collectively remember the maps well enough to recreate them?”

The Quake from Memory pack has been in the works since last year. Find the finished package here, with installation instructions. I don’t know the original Quake well enough to comment on the accuracy of the results – I was naught but a sobbing child when Quake came out, and also, a hopeless Sonic the Hedgehog enthusiast. Still, I’m very interested in the concept of this jam, because when we recreate things from memory, it tends to reveal some kind of bias.

The comments on that Slipseer thread run a fun gamut. Levels are “either uncannily spot on or butchered”. Some rooms are too tall, perhaps because people remember being physically smaller when they played the game, and that difference in scale has somehow bled across the gap between simulation and the flesh. Some nail traps seem to fire too fast. Some maps “are very different in ways I can’t explain in words”.

There’s a sense of fascination, throughout: it’s not just people complaining that the Shamblers are the wrong way round. The premise of recreating the game from memory cultivates an intrigue and a generosity not typically found in responses to certain high-fidelity videogame remasters or remakes.

In the absence of lasting, external tangible records, such as writing, remembering becomes more of a communal practice. I’m interested to know if the Quake from Memory modders were allowed to show each other their work and compare reflections, or if each mapmaker had to go it alone. “Collectively” implies the former.

Inevitably, I’ve been trying to work out if I could recreate any of my favourite games from memory. Back in the day, I could have drawn most of Sonic 2’s layouts by hand, but I have played a million games since, and that squiggly hedgehog lore is lost to me. I have sharper memories of G-Police, the cyberpunk flight sim from WipEout creators Psygnosis.

In particular, I have quite vivid memories of one mission in which you have to stave off base assaults while tracking down and obliterating an approaching land train. The time management rigours of that mission have drummed those dome cities into my head. Still, don’t come crying to me if somebody manages to delete all surviving copies of G-Police. Missions 11-16 are just hypermissile whooshing noises on repeat.

Which game could you recreate from memory alone? Thanks to RPS reader Salty for posting about this in the latest RPS wappity.

Black Ops 7 Carry Forward, explained

Black Ops 7 Carry Forward, explained

by admin August 26, 2025

A new Call of Duty game is on the horizon yet again, and it’s another direct sequel to the previous title.

Black Ops 7 will launch on Nov. 14, 2025, and Black Ops 6 players are eager to know what kind of content will be moving to the new game as party of the Carry Forward system that Call of Duty has been using of late.

Here’s everything there is to know about BO7 Carry Forward.

Black Ops 7 Carry Forward

Image via Activision

What is Carry Forward in BO7?

Traditionally, CoD games have all been independent from each other. But in recent years, the Carry Forward program allowed certain content to transfer between titles, such as Modern Warfare II operators and unlocks being playable in Modern Warfare III in 2022 and 2023, respectively. They have also been usable in Warzone, as well.

Black Ops 6 to Black Ops 7 will have a similar Carry Forward program, but with some specific restrictions.

What BO6 content transfers to BO7?

Image via Activision

The only content that will transfer to BO7 from BO6 via Carry Forward is Double XP tokens and GobbleGums. The rest of the content from BO6 will stay available in BO6 and Warzone, but not be available in BO7.

This means that any operators, operator skins, or weapons bought or unlocked in BO6 will not transfer to BO7. Activision said that this is because BO7 “needs to feel authentic to Call of Duty and its setting” in a community announcement on Aug. 26, 2025.

“We know there’s been a lot of conversation recently about the identity of Call of Duty,” Activision said. “Some of you have said we’ve drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded. That feedback hits home, and we take it seriously. We hear you.”

This means collab skins like Beavis & Butthead, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Squid Game will remain in BO6 and Warzone but not be available in BO7.

The Next Game Informer Issue Includes A Double-Sided Phantom Blade Zero Poster

by admin August 26, 2025

For years, a lot of China’s video game development has happened in the realm of mobile games or as outsourced developers for studios elsewhere in the world. But there’s been a shift happening – with big releases like last year’s Black Myth: Wukong and plenty more, Chinese developers are aiming for new audiences around the world and seeing massive success. After visiting S-Game’s Beijing, China, studio last month to check out hours of its upcoming “kung fu punk” action game, Phantom Blade Zero, I’m feeling pretty confident it’s going to be the country’s next big video game hit.

In our newly announced Game Informer issue, featuring Ninja Gaiden 4 – read about that cover reveal here – I wrote eight pages about Phantom Blade Zero, my time in Beijing, China, playing the game and speaking with the game’s director, and even about my attempt at becoming a kung fu master in S-Game’s Shanghai-based mocap studio (it’s not in the cards for me). But that’s not all the Phantom Blade Zero in this issue: each copy includes a double-sided Phantom Blade Zero poster!!!

Check out the poster that comes with your issue – at no additional charge, of course – below:

If you haven’t subscribed yet, don’t worry because there’s still time! Subscribe today by clicking the button below to get this issue, including the Phantom Blade Zero poster, in your mailbox 4 to 6 weeks after you order!

Capcom replaces disqualified art contest winner with new work following AI allegations

by admin August 26, 2025

Capcom has revealed new in-game Street Fighter 6 loading screen art for Kimberly which will be given to all players as part of a recent community art contest.

This piece comes as a replacement for a former entry, which was disqualified following allegations of AI use. According to the terms and conditions of the art contest, all work submitted must be entirely original, and as such the suspected AI use broke the rules.

Alongside the new art reveal comes the following statement from Capcom: “The Street Fighter 6 development team has completed the previously announced replacement for Kimberly’s new challenger screen. The illustration is based on her swimsuit Outfit 4, which has been earning rave reviews from the community.”

Check out a Eurogamer Street Fighter 6 video!Watch on YouTube

It’s not just the Kimberly piece players will be able to use. Taking a look at the art contest website, a selection of winning entries are displayed alongside the artist who created them. All of these – representing a wide spread of playable characters – will soon be popping up in your online matches.

These art pieces will all be free, and delivered to all Street Fighter 6 players in short order. It’s a nice end to a bit of controversy, with the contest remaining a celebration of the creative talents of Street Fighter players. You love to see it.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Call Of Duty Responds To Ugly Skins By Making A Big Change To Black Ops 7

by admin August 26, 2025

Activision and Treyarch are making a big change to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, just under 12 weeks before its launch in November. All those wacky cosmetics from Black Ops 6 will no longer carry over to the new sequel as previously promised. The devs behind Call of Duty say the change is to ensure Black Ops 7 is “authentic to Call of Duty and its setting.”

On August 26, in a lengthy community update posted on the official Call of Duty website, Treyarch thanked fans for all the feedback and acknowledged the ongoing conversation online surrounding crossover skins and wacky cosmetic items in video games.

“We know there’s been a lot of conversation recently about the identity of Call of Duty,” said the studio. “Some of you have said we’ve drifted from what made Call of Duty unique in the first place: immersive, intense, visceral and in many ways grounded. That feedback hits home, and we take it seriously. We hear you.”

Players were worried that the weird cosmetics and crossover skins from Black Ops 6 would immediately turn Black Ops 7 into a Fortnite-like experience. That’s because the plan was to let skins from BLOPS 6, which now includes characters like Beavis and Butt-Head, carry over to BLOPS 7. But that’s no longer happening.

“Operators, Operator Skins, and Weapons from Black Ops 6 will no longer carry forward into Black Ops 7,” announced Treyarch. “Black Ops 7 needs to feel authentic to Call of Duty and its setting. That is why Black Ops 6 Operator and Weapon content will not carry forward to Black Ops 7. Double XP tokens and GobbleGums will still carry forward, because we recognize your time and progression are important.”

The developers of Black Ops 7 also claimed that a “ton of feedback” has already been implemented into the game. And the studio explained that future cosmetic bundles and items added to BLOPS 7 will be “crafted to fit the Black Ops identity.” Treyarch further added: “We hear the feedback. We need to deliver a better balance toward the immersive, core Call of Duty experience.”

Activision did confirm that BLOPS 6 skins will still move over to Warzone. So your strange collection of characters can still go enjoy battle royale.
