Duskers developers Misfit Attic have revealed Below The Crown, a chess-flavoured fantasy roguelike with an Inscryption-style meta-layer and some sexy 80s CRT visuals. You are a wizard, tasked with Gathering A Party and braving an offbrand Tron dungeon to retrieve some gold. Your upgradeable party members are based on chess units, and each floor of the dungeon is a grid-based combat puzzle inspired by classic chess manouevres like Forks and Pins. Here’s a trailer.

Misfits Attic founder Tim Keenan calls it a “gateway drug into chess”, but the press release often seems more eager to dunk on chess than celebrate it, as it straddles the line of being “accessible for newcomers and compelling for experts”. They want to sell people on the wonders of chess, a beautiful abstract strategy game that dates back hundreds of years, while also reassuring a younger generation of nerds that Below The Crown is absolutely nothing like chess, a stupid non-computer game played by losers that doesn’t even have any magic spells in it.


“Forget memorized openings, drawn-out endgames, and stalemates,” it reads. “Start with one piece, a badass wizard, instead of 16 – and bid the tedium of analysis paralysis adieu.” Sayonara, chess, you monstrous waste of perfectly good timber! I love you. You’re an awful experience and I hope all of my friends get hooked on you. Let’s kiss with tongues, you embarrassing plod.


Chess aside, Below The Crown is billed as a “thinking person’s roguelike” in the style of Slay The Spire, which seems a bit mean to other roguelikes. I consider the roguelike a fairly cerebral genre by default. It’s not like saying “thinking person’s ballpit”, is it. “Make smart plays to capture enemies and survive an ever-changing dungeon,” the press release goes on. “Imbue the party with abilities like Vision for placement flexibility or Shadow Protection, granting a shield while on a dark tile. Acquire spell cards and skills to ramp up throughout a run, collecting gold to sate the Emperor, but also finding mysterious runes along the way…”


That dot-dot-dotting probably pertains to the aforesaid Inscryption-esque meta-layer, which sees you pulling back from a computer within the computer to answer enigmatic corporate queries. “From daily stress surveys to strange ranking rituals, the game isn’t afraid to break the fourth wall and surprise the player with unexpected weirdness,” the press release adds. I am making a note, “expect weirdness”. Keenan also calls Below The Crown a “massively singleplayer experience”, with a custom board editor and the ability to share your creations online.


I will forgive all this frenzied marketing footwork because Misfits Attic are the creators of Duskers – a lonely Lieutenant Gorman simulator, and solid candidate for the title of best space game. According to me, anyway: whoever last edited that Best Of didn’t include it, and they didn’t put it on our list of the best horror games, either. Philistines!

Misfits recently announced that they’re making a “spiritual successor” to Duskers featuring ship-building, under the working title “Humanity 2.0”. They’re also making a “Crusader Kings lite” in which you try to manipulate enemy factions into fighting each other. Certainly, they’ve got a lot going on these days.


Below The Crown will launch on PC via Steam Early Access in Q4 2025, and there’s a demo coming in this October’s Steam Next Fest. Read more on the aforesaid Steam.

PC modders have already begun optimising Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, even before Konami has released further updates.


The Metal Gear remake has been criticised for its poor performance, with videos shared on social media of jarring stuttering. In particular, the PS5 Pro version has come under fire.

Konami acknowledged a handful of specific issues ahead of launch, though general optimisation wasn’t included. In just a couple of days, though, PC modders have taken matters into their own hands.

Modder FrancisLouis, for instance, has created the Metal Gear Optimiser mod on NexusMods, which “reduces stuttering by optimising shader compilation and assets streaming”. FrancisLouis notes results can vary depending on hardware.


Other mods – such as Better Uncap FPS v1.2 from Mstrthief, Unlocked FPS from Hybred, and Unlock FG and FPS from Velasquez among others – seek to provide an unlocked framerate and other benefits


It’s clear optimisation is a priority among modders, who have seemingly been able to make improvements quicker than an official patch from Konami – though of course, mods aren’t always reliable.

Perhaps the funniest mod for the game, though, is from Fiend, which allows players to swap Snake for Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima.

Kojima has stated in interviews he won’t be playing the remake himself, likely due to his acrimonious split from Konami. But that hasn’t stopped players putting him in the game instead.

Earlier this week, Epic boss Tim Sweeney blamed developers for any optimisation issues when using Unreal Engine 5 – Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater being one such game to use the engine.

But first, before you go off and enjoy the last work day of the week, please read today’s Morning Checkpoint. Today, we’re talking about The Last of Us TV show, looking at the future of Space Marine 2, checking out some sales data for Cyberpunk 2077, and learning what Kojima thinks of AI. Someone hit that button again. It’s too loud, I can’t think.

Hideo Kojima thinks AI is the next big gaming revolution

The Death Stranding 2 director was in the midst of his Saudi Arabia tour stop when he opined on how games are changing. “Gaming is always about technology,” he said during a panel discussion, Rolling Stone reports. “At first, the games were all 2D, about 16 colors, 16 bits…the biggest, first change was [that] games became 3D. The second is we [became] connected by [the] internet, and you could play [online]. The third is the trend right now that AI is now coming into game creation, and we have not just ChatGPT, but they learn from how the players control. And I think that you’ll take advantage of that.”

But Kojima seems more interested in going to the movies or visiting museums than chatting with bots and playing games. “I probably just play maybe one game a year,” he said.

Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 sold far more physical copies than digital

As spotted by VGC, Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt revealed during the company’s latest financial results that its open-world sci-fi RPG featuring Keanu Reeves was a big hit on Switch 2. Interestingly, 75 percent of Cyberpunk 2077 copies sold on Switch 2 in June were physical game cards. This is notable as CD Projekt Red opted not to use the controversial game key card system, and instead, Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the biggest third-party Switch 2 launch window games to ship entirely on a physical game cart.

Considering Cyberpunk 2077 was reportedly the best-selling third-party game on Nintendo’s new console, it seems Switch 2 owners, at least for now, prefer a real physical copy over key card shenanigans.

Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is getting a brand new class in 2026

Space Marine 2 launched a year ago this month. To celebrate the third-person shooter entering its second year, Saber Interactive has released a new roadmap for it that promises a lot of new content, including a new class: The Techmarine. The studio didn’t share many details about the new class, but did confirm that Techmarines will get to wield Omnissiah Axes, a new exclusive weapon. Beyond the new class, the next year of content includes new PVE missions, PVP maps, fresh cosmetic options, and more.

New report claims Sony is planning a Switch-like PS6 handheld

YouTube channel and reliable tech leaker and reporter Moore’s Law Is Dead claims in a new video to have seen multiple documents mentioning that Sony is working on a portable, handheld PlayStation 6 console that will launch alongside a more powerful, traditional machine. Notably, the channel claims that this PS6 handheld will support the ability to dock and connect to a TV, like the Switch, turning it into a more traditional home console. Moore’s Law Is Dead speculates that this PS6 portable console might cost around $500 and could ship sometime in 2027.

Bella Ramsey tells Last of Us TV show haters to go play the game

As reported by GameSpot and Culture Crave,  Ellie actor Bella Ramsey talked about HBO’s The Last of Us and its already aired season two, as well as the upcoming season three. She discussed the death of Joel in season two and negative reactions to the show’s second year, saying:

“There is nothing I can do about it anyway. The show is out. There is nothing that can be changed or altered [for Season 2]. There is not really any point in reading or looking at anything. People are of course entitled to their opinions. It doesn’t affect the show, it doesn’t affect how the show continues or anything, in any way, so they’re very separate things to me. So no, I just don’t really engage.”

She also added that people who dislike the series can stop watching, explaining, “I would say, you don’t have to watch it. If you hate it that much, the game exists. You can just play the game again. You don’t have to watch [Season 3]. If you do want to watch it, I hope you enjoy it,”

The second incarnation of Final Fantasy 14 debuted in 2013, and it’s proven to be far more resilient than the version that arrived in 2010. However, there’s been discontent in the FF14 community lately over the removal of a popular mod, which led to the game’s subsequent review-bombing on Steam. Now, director Naoki Yoshida has addressed the mod controversy with an appeal to players.

Yoshida’s complete remarks were posted on FF14’s official site, and he requested that excerpts from his statement not be used by media outlets. But since his response was nearly 2,000 words, a concise recap is unavoidable. The issue started when Square Enix’s lawyers sent a letter to modder DarkArchon regarding Mare Synchronos, a mod that allowed players’ customized avatars to be visible outside of their own game. Once Mare Synchronos was removed at Square Enix’s request, some fans shared their fury in the form of negative Steam reviews.

Although Yoshida notes that he tolerates mods and has admiration for some fan-made creations, he’s against mods that violate the game’s intent or design in a negative manner. As a potential example, Yoshida noted that Square Enix could face legal consequences in some countries over nude character mods on display in the game. He also cited customized appearances that mimic paid content from from the game as an example of devaluing the services and collectibles that Square Enix sells to provide the revenue the game needs to remain financially viable.

Yoshida concluded his statement by saying he respects the tradition of modding in PC games, but he also requests that players do so while respecting the rules and integrity of FF14.

Late last year, Square Enix expanded Final Fantasy 14 into the mobile realm and released the game’s fifth expansion, Dawntrail. More recently, Yoshida has shared his intent to make sure Final Fantasy 14 remains compatible with PlayStation 4 as long as possible. However, he added that the limitations of the PS4 hardware may make that less feasible going forward.

The latest game in the grand HoYoverse has been unveiled. This morning, Chinese developer MiHoYo announced a new entry in the Honkai series – Honkai: Nexus Anima. The game was initially teased during Honkai: Star Rail’s anniversary concert back in May, but it’s been officially revealed today.

Nexus Anima is essentially MiHoYo’s take on the legendary and long-running Pokemon series. It blends creature-collecting with adventure game elements, and you may even be able to get your hands on it soon.

Honkai: Nexus Anima’s reveal trailer is more of a tone piece, and doesn’t show much of the gameplay. It does, however, introduce us to Anima – the creatures you’ll be befriending in the game.

The world of the game – Nexus – features “unseen bonds” between different, paired concepts, such as Love and Hate, Light and Dark, Life and Death and so on. As it often happens, however, the delicate balance that held them together has been shattered.

When the rupture occurred, the concepts were scattered across the land, with their powers taking the form of the creatures you’ll be collection, Anima. After you forge a bond with one, you’ll be able to unlock abilities based on the power that birthed it in the first place.

You play as a character capable of traversing various realms. Over the course of the story, you’ll encounter Anima with their own personalities and unique abilities. The press release says these abilities will help with both exploration and combat.

Speaking of which, we don’t quite know how combat is going to play out in Nexus Anima, but it does appear like it’s going to be similar to Pokemon’s turn-based combat, albeit from a different, Teamfight Tactics-like perspective. We won’t have to wait too long to see it, though, because the game’s first closed beta is on the horizon.

Registration for the Nexus Bond Test is live now and until September 12. It’s available for anyone on PC and iOS. Until we can see gameplay, it’s worth perusing the official site, as it does offer an early look at few Anima, as well as Animasters – the characters you’ll be playing as.

CD Projekt’s mysterious Project Hadar is now their research focus, as Cyberpunk 2 and Witcher 4 gather steam

The headcounts of both The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2’s dev teams continue to steadily climb, as the two RPGs inch closer to our fingertips. Meanwhile, CD Projekt have confirmed that their research division are still busy deciding what the mysterious original game codenamed Project Hadar will look like.

All of these details, plus some Nintendo Switch stuff we’ve avoided hearing by sticking our mouse and keyboard-focused fingers in our ears, were revealed in the Polish publishers’ financial report covering the first half of 2025.

First, the big guns. As outlined by the handy chart below, The Witcher 4 had 422 people working on it as of April 30 and saw that number grow to 444 people by the close of July, while Cyberpunk 2 has hopped over the three digit threshold in that time, going from 96 chooms to 116. Oh bugger, sorry for dropping the c-bomb, that Cyberpunk playthrough I’m still on with is clearly getting to me.

“Our recruitment efforts have significantly sped up over the last three months, and as a result the total number of talented developers working across our projects has grown by 10%, reaching almost 800 people,” CD Projekt joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski explained in a presentation to investors. It’s worth noting that this current growth follows the studio laying off staff back in 2023, with some remaining workers deciding to unionise as a result.

With Cyberpunk 2 now having fully moved from the research section of CD Projekt’s books into the development section – it’s been in pre-production for a little while now – the mysterious Project Hadar’s the most expensive research project CD Projekt have on the go. While we have some sense now of The Witcher 4, Cyberpunk 2, and Molasses Flood’s Witcher spin-off Project Sirius, Hadar remains an enigma several years on from its initial announcement back in 2022.

We know it’s going to be an original story, and some job listings have suggested that it’s an action RPG with melee combat. Nowakowski’s also been weirdly specific in ruling out that it’s a “cosmic horror in feudal Japan”. Aside from that, shrug emoji. Though, with Hadar’s 22 person strong team now looking to be the main focus of CD projekt’s research department, the company’s investors are clearly as curious for more info on it as we are.

In the call accompanying these financials, one of them rather bluntly asked whether any decisions regarding the game’s future would be made by the end of this year or 2026. Nowakowski seemed a bit taken aback by the idea of sharing more so soon.

“Hadar is still basically an IP concept, so not a game development project yet,” he responded. “We’re working on the game’s story, its background – so to say; there is some prototyping going on in terms of gameplay, because it’s hard not to do that when the end goal is to make a video game – but I’m not sure what you mean by ‘decisions’ – I mean, as in to progress to development, or whether we’re going to make [a game] or not…? We want to make this IP happen, so that decision is sort of made in terms of – when we’re going to go into development, we will announce it in due time, I think.”

You could argue it’s been a bit of a strange move for CD Projekt to have announced Hadar at the same time they did the fresh Witcher trilogy and Cyberpunk 2, if they were still going to be at this early a stage with it nearly three years down the line. Then again, that kind of transparency’s great for us journos and has probably helped CD Projekt recruit folks to work on Hadar. My money’s on it being a Keanu Reeves gacha game with 4X strategy elements and a roguelike mode based around the concept of the word ‘woah’.

Tomb Raider Developer Crystal Dynamics Lays Off An Unknown Number Of Staff

Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics announced an unknown number of layoffs yesterday, vaguely citing “evolving business decisions,” as the reason. 

The studio shared the news on LinkedIn, writing that the decision wasn’t made lightly and was made to “ensure the long-term health of our studio and core creative priorities in a continually shifting market.”

“To those impacted – we recognize and thank you for your hard work, talent, and passion. We are committed to offering the full extent of support and resources at our disposal during this transition,” reads Crystal Dynamics’ statement.

The message ends with confirmation that the future of Tomb Raider, including an upcoming new title, will be unaffected by the layoffs.

Tomb Raider (2013)

Crystal Dynamics does not elaborate further, but it’s worth noting the studio had been working on the recently canceled reboot of Perfect Dark alongside the game’s primary – and now defunct – developer, The Initiative. It’s hard to imagine this didn’t have some factor in yesterday’s layoffs.

The news comes after the studio laid off 17 employees in March. As of now, Crystal Dynamics, which was acquired by Embracer Group in 2022, has a new single-player Tomb Raider title in the works. First announced in 2022, the project will be published by Amazon Games and built in Unreal Engine 5. We know little about the game beyond this, and a release window is unknown. 

Crystal Dynamics has not shipped a new triple-A title since the polarizing Marvel’s Avengers in 2020, though it collaborated with Aspyr on Tomb Raider I-III/IV-VI Remastered collections, released in 2024 and 2025, respectively, and 2024’s Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered.

Epic CEO blames Unreal Engine 5 issues on developers, but more support incoming

Epic CEO Time Sweeney has blamed developers for issues with games made in Unreal Engine 5, stating the “main cause is the order of development”.


A number of games developed with UE5 released recently have had issues with performance, including the likes of Metal Gear Solid Delta Snake Eater (out today!) and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, but ever since the engine’s release there have been games with stuttering and poor frame rates.


Now, speaking to media at the Unreal Fest in South Korea (thanks Clawsomegamer), Sweeney put the onus on developers and the need for better education.


“The main cause is the order of development,” he said. “Many studios build for top-tier hardware first and leave optimisation and low-spec testing for the end. Ideally, optimisation should begin early – before full content build-out. We’re doing two things: strengthening engine support with more automated optimisation across devices, and expanding developer education so ‘optimise early’ becomes standard practice. If needed, our engineers can step in.


“Game complexity is much higher than 10 years ago, so it’s hard to solve purely at the engine level; engine makers and game teams need to collaborate. We’re also bringing Fortnite optimisation learnings into Unreal Engine, so titles run better on low-spec PCs.”


Essentially, developers are too focused on high-end gaming PCs and consoles, meaning those on the lower end are suffering.


That’s all well and good for the biggest developers, but for smaller indies optimisation can be a huge challenge. Arguably, Epic needs to build on those education efforts further to help studios get the most out of the engine.

Diablo Devs Are The Latest To Unionize: Here’s Why

The team making Diablo 4 and other entries in Blizzard’s action-RPG franchise is the latest inside of Microsoft to unionize. Workers say the move is to help them negotiate fair terms around issues like like layoffs and remote work. “Passion can’t protect us from job instability,” software engineer Skye Hoefling said in a press release. “Our union allows us to focus on making magical experiences for our players instead of worrying about the unstable job industry.”

The Diablo team, known within Blizzard as Team 3, joins the Overwatch and World of Warcraft teams in organizing with the Communications Workers of America (CMA). That national organization signed an agreement with Microsoft during its acquisition of Activision Blizzard that would keep the tech giant neutral on all internal union drives, erasing some of the barriers that usually stop workers from organizing.

Microsoft has voluntarily recognized the Diablo developers’ union and they will now get in line to begin bargaining their first contract. Over 300 ZeniMax QA testers at the company won their first contract earlier this summer.

A “passion tax” for working in games

So what made the Diablo team want to jump on the union train within Blizzard? Part of it is the way companies use “getting to make games” as a kind of excuse to establish worse working conditions than those often experienced by workers in competing roles in tech and entertainment. “My entire career as a developer has seen my peers and I paying the ‘passion tax’ for working in an industry that we love,” software engineer Nav Bhatti said in a press release. “At some point you have to choose between fight or flight, and forming a union is us doing just that — standing our ground in the industry.”

Workers also laid out specific concerns around remote work flexibility, budget cuts, and the growing influence of AI in the development process. Mass layoffs in early 2024 were one of the catalysts. A battle over remote work that began back in 2023 was another. A mandatory return-to-office policy forced people hired during the pandemic to relocate and limited which talent teams could hire. “There’s no real argument against remote work, except the control part, where now they know where you are and what you’re doing,” Blizzard producer Ryan Claudy told Aftermath.

AI creep is here

The sudden rise of AI, which Microsoft is placing $80 billion bets will completely reshape the modern economy, is also on the Diablo team’s mind. “[Generative AI] is starting to creep in a lot,” Diablo 4 producer Kelly Yeo told Aftermath. “I can only speak for art, where in the visual development stage, if people don’t feel like they have concept art support, they’ll just toss things into Stable Diffusion or whatever and then do mood boards and stuff and give that to the teams to give them guidance.”

She continued, “There is definitely a growing concern across most of the artists like ‘Is this going to replace us?’” Other game teams have already come under fire for AI art that makes it into the finished product. A Call of Duty associate director at Treyarch recently told IGN that only work hand-crafted by the team is allowed into the game, but that AI slop sometimes gets through “accidentally.” And some developers at King recently told Mobilegamer that Microsoft was pressuring them to incorporate AI into all aspects of their workflows.

Despite notable unions forming at Sega of America and some overseas European game studios, most of the organizing in the U.S. so far has been confined to Microsoft-owned companies due to the neutrality agreement. Big publishers like Electronic Arts and Take-Two, which have undergone their own ruthless cost-cutting efforts in the past year, have so far remained impervious to workers organizing. If annual mass layoffs continue, that might change.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If you haven’t picked up a physical copy for PS5 or Xbox Series X, there’s still time to get the Tactical Edition for either platform. And depending on your location, you may be able to start playing as soon as Friday by ordering from Amazon or Walmart. The Tactical Edition includes a voucher for the Sneaking DLC Pack, which unlocks 10 cosmetics for Solid Snake, including six alternate suits. The Sneaking DLC Pack is sold separately for $15, so you might as well get it for free while you can.

PC players, meanwhile, can save 25% on Steam keys at GameSpot sister site Fanatical.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater – Tactical Edition:

If you were hoping to secure the hard-to-find Collector’s Edition on launch day, it’s technically available at Walmart for PS5. I said “technically” because Walmart is currently charging $329.90 for the Collector’s Edition–$130 above MSRP. It’s not a seller on Walmart’s marketplace; The Collector’s Edition is sold and shipped by Walmart at this price. In case you can’t see it on your end–Walmart sometimes limits items to specific regions across the US–I’ve attached a screenshot at the bottom of this article

Earlier tonight, Walmart’s price was $337.86 for Xbox and PS5. The Xbox edition seemingly sold out, and it seems like people are indeed paying this much for the PlayStation version, too. Perhaps people are banking on Walmart providing a partial refund for charging too much. I wouldn’t count on that, but hey, Walmart does offer free 30-day returns, so you wouldn’t be stuck with it if you decide $330 is too much.

The Collector’s Edition comes with the Tactical Edition and Sneaking DLC Pack. It’s not surprising the Collector’s Edition has been so difficult to find in stock. The Terrarium Diorama and exclusive steelbook are very cool. The diorama recreates a scene from the game’s first mission, and the steelbook has Yoji Shinkawa’s artwork from the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

As they often do, Walmart and Amazon have undercut the competition by one dollar for the Tactical Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X. It’s worth emphasizing that the Tactical Edition is a special launch edition. At some point, whenever retailers sell through their inventories, the next batch of physical copies will be standard editions without the Sneaking DLC voucher in the box.

Sneaking DLC Pack:

The 10-item cosmetics bundle includes six suits, two masks, and two alternate face camos. Two of the suits are from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. You can also make Snake cosplay as a crocodile.

The 25% discount on Steam keys at Fanatical applies to both the standard and Digital Deluxe Editions. Just keep in mind that one of the main perks of the Digital Deluxe Edition was two-day early access. The other perk is the Sneaking DLC Pack.
