Xbox mobile game store launch “stymied” by Apple, says Microsoft

Microsoft has sided with Epic in its feud against Apple, claiming the iPhone maker has “stymied” the company’s efforts to launch its Xbox mobile game store.

Back in May last year, Microsoft announced plans to release a new Xbox mobile game store. At this time, the company envisioned it to be ready for release by that summer. However, this did not happen.

Now, Microsoft has filed a legal brief in support of Epic Games as part of Apple’s appeal against a recent ruling, which follows a five-year legal battle between Epic and Apple, and has now resulted in Fortnite making its return to the App Store in the US. Here, Microsoft shed more light on the delay to its own mobile store.

Microsoft stated it wishes to “offer consumers a workable solution by launching its own online store”, but efforts have been “stymied” by Apple and its strict App Store rules.

As shared by The Verge, this is how Microsoft explains its current situation:

“The district court’s injunction allows Apple to maintain its in-app exclusivity but at least should have enabled Microsoft to offer consumers a workable solution by launching its own online store – accessible via link-out – for in-app items to be purchased off-app and used in games or other apps. And that is what Microsoft wants to do. But even this solution has been stymied by Apple.

“Prior to the district court’s most recent order, Microsoft had been unable to implement linked-out payments (or even inform customers that alternative purchase methods exist) because of Apple’s new anti-steering policies that restrict Microsoft’s communication to users and impose an even higher economic cost to Microsoft than before the injunction.”

As noted by the publication, the recent court ruling does make it possible for Microsoft to launch its mobile store, but the company still wants to ensure Apple’s appeal against the ruling is unsuccessful, in order to avoid having to potentially remove its own store further down the line.

Microsoft notes in its filing that Apple “makes no argument that the technical or policy changes cannot be undone”, and that the company’s own “experience managing app stores confirms that Apple’s policies could be restored if Apple ultimately prevails on appeal”.

Avowed updates are waiting when you finish Oblivion and Clair Obscur

Obsidian Entertainment has released a roadmap for Avowed, just in time for you to finish up Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. The studio has revealed what players can look forward to in the Living Lands with the release of the May 2025 1.4 update and what’s coming next.

Much of the new content deals with quality-of-life efforts and a focus on implementing more content for those who have completed their adventure.According to the company’s statement regarding the new content, the improvements were greatly influenced by the Avowed community’s “continued reports, feedback, and suggestions.”

The 1.4 update rolled out on Friday, May 15, and focused on fog of war improvements, map exploration, increased gold and crafting materials, soul pods, and unique gear.

Additionally, Obsidian added keyboard and mouse support for Xbox players, new optional settings for chests to appear on the minimap, power attacks for the bow and arquebus, and even an arachnophobia mode that replaces the sinister and petrifying spiders with “floating orbs that still pack a punch.”

But that’s not all; Obsidian tackled more bugs, crashes, glitches, and exploits in the new update, the full details of which can be found here.

An update planned for the upcoming hot summer months will improve cooking and crafting, piggybacking off the 1.3.1 update. The summer patch will also bring new NPC behaviors and abilities, active and passive abilities, unique weapons and armor, and custom map markers for exploration.

This fall, the Avowed community will be finally treated to a new game plus feature, breathing a second life into the action RPG title. Along with new game plus, the fall 2025 update will include new weapon types, the ability to change appearances in the wild, new character presets, more Godlike presets, and photo mode — because if you don’t have a picture, did it really happen?

It’s unclear whether the game will continue to receive major content in 2026. However, Obsidian did call attention to its plans for localizing Avowed for Korean and Japanese audiences, as well as ongoing improvements for French-speaking regions, all available at a future and unnamed date.

Avowed was released in February 2025 and may have been more recently overshadowed by show-stealing titles such as Oblivion and Expedition 33, both which released in April. But, with major update commitments, it appears Avowed will be ready for you when you return from Cyrodiil and Lumière, respectively.

Cyberpunk Sequel Returns To Night City, And Goes Somewhere New

We still don’t know much about the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel currently in the works at CD Projekt Red. Development on the RPG, code-named “Orion,” is in full swing after the studio wrapped support for the original game last year, but the team is still keeping most details about it under wraps, other than a few informal quotes here and there about the vibe it’s trying to capture. However, Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop roleplaying game, which first debuted in 1988, has revealed a pretty important piece of information: Alongside returning to the capitalist hellscape of Night City, the sequel will take us to another city as well.

Speaking to Polish gaming channel tvgry at the Digital Dragons Conference in Poland, Pondsmith talked a little about the upcoming game, revealing that “Orion” will take place at least partially, though not entirely, in Night City. He described some talks he had with the CD Projekt Red team, and said that while he’s not as involved in the sequel as he was with 2077, he can say that the game will feature a second city that is “more like Chicago gone wrong.”

“I spent a lot of time talking to one of the environment guys, and he was explaining how the new place in Orion, because there’s another city we visit —I’m not telling you any more than that, but there’s another city we visit,” Pondsmith said. “Night City is still there, but I remember looking at it and going, ‘yeah, I understand the feel you’re going for this, and this really does work.’ And it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong. I said, ‘Yeah, I can see this working.’”

Assuming Pondsmith is being careful with his words here, this doesn’t explicitly mean Cyberpunk’s next game is set in Chicago specifically, which does still exist in the universe. He describes the new location as being “like” the city, so it’s probably not the Illinois metropolis itself, and as of yet, it’s unclear in what ways the new setting will resemble Chicago. In its infrastructure? Its culture? Unbearably cold winters? We’ll find out eventually.

What I’m curious about is how much of a divide there will be between this new city and the Night City we know and love. I know exploring an old map in an open-world game might not sound that exciting, but Night City is still one of the most well-realized cities I’ve ever explored in a game, and I imagine CDPR isn’t too keen to just throw all that work away if there are still stories to tell. I’m also wondering if the studio will include some kind of choice import to have the story of 2077’s merc protagonist V referenced in the sequel according to your decisions. I don’t need a cameo from the guy, but I wouldn’t mind a drink at the Afterlife bar paying tribute to his big space heist at the end of the game.

Sonic fans can save big on preorders for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Sonic Prime: The Complete Series Steelbook Edition. Amazon has dropped the price of the collectible Blu-ray set to $30.41 (was $50). That’s a pretty incredible deal, especially when you toss in the cool steelbook case that comes with the upcoming release. Sonic Prime: The Complete Series Steelbook Edition releases June 24. If Amazon sells out, Walmart also has a nice 30% discount that cuts the price to $34.

This set includes three 1080p Blu-ray discs featuring all 23 episodes from Sonic Prime’s three-season story arc. It comes with a few extras to make it quite display-worthy. There’s the eye-catching steelbook case with custom artwork on the front, back, and interior. You’ll also get a protective cardboard sleeve and a transparent sleeve, which is admittedly a bit peculiar.

There aren’t any special features listed for this release, which isn’t too surprising given that the Blu-ray editions of the first two seasons of Sonic Prime didn’t contain any bonus material. On the plus side, this is over nine hours of Sonic content, so you–or younger members of the family–will have plenty to watch.

Like all catastrophes, Sonic Prime kicks off with the universe being shattered because the titular hedgehog didn’t heed the advice of his friends when he was facing off against Dr. Eggman. With the multiverse in peril, Sonic has to travel to distant worlds to fix his mistake, and along the way, he encounters new and strange versions of his allies who are the key to helping him on his quest.

Overall, it’s a fun show aimed at younger members of the family, as they’ll get a kick out of all the multiversal silliness and action in this animated series.

Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Series

Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog: The Complete Series (Blu-ray)

Sonic Prime is the sixth Sonic the Hedgehog animated series, and if you’re looking to complete your collection, you can pick up the other shows on DVD and Blu-ray. Sonic had two animated series in the early ’90s, the very silly Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and the very serious–for a cartoon–Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic Underground was the next series produced, and keeping with tradition, it was a very weird Sonic cartoon that teamed up with his siblings Sonia and Manic as they weaponized music to help them overthrow the tyrannical Dr. Robotnik and reclaim their royal birthright. That’s not even the strangest part, as all three of the Sonic siblings were voiced by Jaleel White, who you might recognize as Steve Urkel from Family Matters. Yes, he did do that.

Skipping ahead to modern times, Sonic X was an anime series that ran from 2003-2005, and Sonic Boom saw the franchise transition to CG-animation when it landed in 2014. That brings us up to Sonic Prime, but weirdly, only the first two seasons of the show have gotten Blu-ray releases.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies are also highly recommended–unless Hollywood releases an Ugly Sonic cut of the first one–as these are a fun mix of comedy, action, and impressive character designs. You can pick up steelbook editions of each one, including the threequel that featured Keanu Reeves voicing Shadow the Hedgehog. The Knuckles miniseries Steelbook Edition is sold out, but you can still get the Paramount+ show, which takes place between the second and third films, on 4K Blu-ray.

Morale at Bungie reportedly in “free fall” after disastrous art plagiarism fiasco and horrendous community-facing live stream

It’s been reported by Forbes that developers at Bungie, the studio behind Destiny 2 and the upcoming extraction shooter Marathon, are tanking some serious damage to their will. According to the report, morale is in “free fall” following revelations that work from artist Antireal was used in Marathon without permission.

Marathon art director Joe Cross and game director Joe Ziegler teamed up for a community-facing livestream on May 16, which was already scheduled prior to news of the plagiarism breaking, but naturally saw the devs address the controversy rather than proceeding as normal. In what proved to be an awkward and frankly hard to watch event, Cross read out an official statement he wrote about what’s next regarding Antireal’s work in Marathon in place of a planned showcase of art which, for obvious reasons, didn’t happen.

Cross stated: “It came to our attention that an artist who worked on Marathon in the early stages of pre-production took a number of graphic elements from a graphic designer, without permission or acknowledgement, and placed them on a decal sheet that was then checked in in 2020. The decal sheet included icons and text elements. These elements ended up in our alpha build, and there is absolutely no excuse for this oversight, and we are working on, and 100% committed to, our review process to ensure instances like this don’t happen again on Marathon or at Bungie.

“A few of the things that we’ve done to shore up the review process are as follows: We’ve reached out to Antireal to follow up to make sure we do right by this artist. We’re auditing all of the previous work by the internal artist, including environment decals already in the build, which is why we’re delaying some of the content we were going to show today. We’re committed to removing that is questionably or innapropriately sourced. We’re doing a broad decal audit, and if we find any other details or elements, we’ll make sure they are eliminated and recreated in-house for sure.

“Hundreds of artists have worked on this project for years intenrally and externally, and we share many influences including modernism, Swiss typography, 2000’s style vector art, Cyber Punk, and of course the original Marathon trilogy. Our style is a result of all of those inspirations, and it’s worth noting that none of our external partners who have worked on branding or the visual design of our game were involved in this situation.”

This statement didn’t go down especially well with live viewers of the stream, with the majority of the questions coming from chat live relating to the Marathon art and how exactly Bungie would make right by Antireal. Since this stream wrapped up, community sentiment remains largely sceptical, pending the results of the audit mentioned in the statement.

Enter Forbes’ article, published a day after this stream, in which Paul Tassi reported having been told by staff at Bungie that “the vibes have never been worse”. In addition, he claimed to have been told that the staff are worried what will happen if Marathon bombs. Bungie, having suffered wave after wave of layoffs of recent years, is in desperate need for a big financial win these days.

Tassi also reported that the public-facing explanation for the art theft is the same being given internally, and that legal teams from Bungie and Sony are currently sorting through this issue. Also, the report alleges Marathon was pitched by “good old boy” leadership at Bungie, which it claims has been been ignoring developer input on what Marathon should/shouldn’t have for years, including the idea that the game should have a PvE element – the absence
of which is proving to be a major sour point for some alpha testers.

We recommend reading Forbes’ article for the full report, but it’s safe to say that it’s been a particularly bad few days for Bungie and the Marathon team. Bungie, a company which is no stranger to plagiarism controversy, finds itself stuck in the mud in yet another debacle. This one coming roughly months ahead of the planned release date for Marathon likely spells trouble for the game’s prospects, especially if it can’t shake this negative sentiment.

CD Projekt Red’s sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is mostly a bit of a mystery, and it likely will be for a while yet given that they’re currently full steam ahead on The Witcher 4. We know Anna Megill, who worked on Control and the upcoming Fable game, is attached as lead writer, and that the team wants to deal with some big topics, but there’s been nothing like plot details shared so far. At the very least, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith shared some tidbits about it at Digital Dragons, namely to do with the game’s map.


Pondsmith explained that with the sequel, he’s “not as involved directly,” but he does get to look at the scripts of the game. “Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments, and seeing what they had, ‘Oh look, this is the new cyberware, what do you think?’ ‘Oh yeah, that’s pretty good, that works here.’”

In terms of things he shared about the game itself, Pondsmith explained that he “spent a lot of time talking to one of the environment guys, and he was explaining how the new place… because there’s another city that we visit, and I’m not telling you anymore than that, but there’s another city that we visit. Night City is still there.” He went on to say, “I remember looking at it and going, ‘I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work, it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong’. And I said, ‘yeah, I can see this working’.”


I’m going to assume that he probably isn’t even meant to say as much as he’s said here, but he’s also the literal creator of the world of Cyberpunk, I think we can cut him some slack.


Based on Pondsmith’s comments, we’ll be able to roam around Night City once more alongside this new, Chicago-like city. Smart thinking, honestly. I know people complained about how Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom just used the same map again, but if you ask me it expanded and changed it in some pretty interesting ways.


The Yakuza series repeatedly used the same locations too, not only working well as asset flips, but as a narrative tool too. I don’t even like Cyberpunk 2077 all that much, but I’d still be curious to see how Night City changes between games. I’m sure we’ll get some idea of what the RPG will be like in, hmm, at least seven years? Yeah, that sounds about right.

Fortnite Is Back On The iOS App Store In The US After Nearly 5 Years

Fortnite, Epic Games’ mega-popular battle royale, is back on the iOS App Store in the U.S. nearly five years after being removed. Apple kicked Fortnite off the iOS App Store in 2020 after Epic added its own payment system, violating Apple’s at-the-time rules and preventing Apple from receiving kickback fees.

However, after the court in Epic’s case against the iPhone maker ruled in favor of Epic last month, preventing Apple from taking kickback fees from purchases made outside of apps in the U.S., the game has finally returned to the iOS App Store. It’s also available in the Epic Games Store and AltStore in the EU now.

You can see the game in the iOS App Store here. Players jumping in on mobile will find the battle royale in the middle of a shortened Star Wars season featuring characters like Jar-Jar Binks, Darth Jar-Jar, General Grievous, and more. Check out a trailer of the Star Wars action below:

Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG that formed the basis of Cyberpunk 2077, has been discussing CD Projekt’s in-development sequel, saying it’ll feature second city that feels like “Chicago gone wrong”.


CD Projekt confirmed a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel was in the works back in 2022, and only a scant few details have been shared since then. We know it’s currently being referred to by the codename Project Orion, for instance, that it’s being developed by CD Projekt’s Boston and Vancouver studios, and… well, that’s about it.


Pondsmith, though, has now provided what might just be the first tangible details of CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. Speaking to TVGRY during this year’s Digital Dragons Conference in Krakow, he explained that while he’s “not as involved directly” with Project Orion as he was its predecessor, he still sees the scripts and has been visiting its development studio.

“Last week,” he revealed, “I was wandering around talking to different departments and seeing what they had… I spent a lot of time talking to one of the environment guys, and he was explaining how the new place in Orion… because there’s another city we visit, and I’m not telling you anymore than that.”


Luckily for everyone (except, perhaps, CD Projekt, which seems unlikely to have sanctioned any of these reveals), Pondsmith did share a little more. First, he confirmed “Night City is still there” alongside this second location, before teasing how Project Orion’s two cities will differentiate themselves. “I remember looking at [the new location] and going, ‘Yeah, I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work. It doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong’. And I said, ‘Yeah, I can see this working.'”


Interestingly, while Pondsmith only suggested Project Orion’s second location was like Chicago, fans have long speculated the actual city of Chicago will play a key role in CD Projekt’s sequel. As explained in a fairly comprehensive post on the Cyberpunk subreddit, the in-universe version of Chicago has struggled through both an economic collapse, a corporate war, and a bio-plague – so “gone wrong” would very much apply here. Additionally, Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion features a possible ending that can nudge players several years forward in the timeline, after which the Transcontinental Maglev Network project referenced in the base game – one linking Night City with Chicago – is revealed to be complete.


It’s certainly a compelling theory, especially given Pondsmith’s latest chatter, but there’s obviously no guarantee any of this will make it through the years of development required to turn Project Orion – which is currently in the pre-production phase – into a complete and released game. That won’t happen until sometime after The Witcher 4’s still-nebulous launch window – but at least that leaves plenty of time to wrap up the original Cyberpunk 2077, which will soon be making its Nintendo debut on Switch 2.

Guillermo del Toro recently spoke at the Cannes Film Festival, sharing some details about his upcoming film Frankenstein, set to release on Netflix later this year. As reported by Variety, he said he’s been asked whether his movie will have “really scary scenes.” That prompted the Academy Award-winning director to ponder how people would receive the movie made: “For the first time, I considered that. It’s an emotional story for me. It’s as personal as anything. I’m asking a question about being a father, being a son… I’m not doing a horror movie — ever. I’m not trying to do that.”

While it can be confusing to hear a man with story and producer credits on a film literally called Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (adapted from the excellent book of the same name) say he’s “not trying to do” horror, that mindset aligns with most of his career.

Del Toro’s early movies, like Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone, can certainly be classified as horror. While his later films feature frightening elements, though, they break away from conventional horror and lean more into gothic fantasies and dark fairy tales. I was as scared as anyone by the Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, perhaps his most famous film, but that doesn’t make it a horror movie. It’s more of a fantasy and a parable, examining the realities of war through the eyes and imaginative reinterpretations of a young girl.

Though Crimson Peak tells a ghost story, it features romance at its core. And The Shape of Water continues a focus on romance, as well as telling a story centered around embracing the Other. With an ending that sees protagonist Elisa (Sally Hawkins) becoming a mythical creature herself, it’s more of a fairy tale than a horror film.

Emphasizing with the ostracized is at the core of plenty of del Toro’s work, whether its Elisa and The Amphibian Man’s fairy-tale-esque love story or Hellboy’s pursuit of normalcy in del Toro’s adaptation of Mike Mignola’s comics. “The first time I thought I was going to avenge the creature was when Marilyn Monroe is coming out [of 1954’s The Creature from the Black Lagoon] in The Seven Year Itch with Tom Ewell, and she says the creature just needed somebody to like him,” del Toro said at Cannes. “I fell in love with Marilyn, and I fell in love with the creature in that scene at a very early age. And I thought, you know, all we have is people that look at people the wrong way. That’s what we have in this world.”

Don’t expect Frankenstein to be any different. “[F]or me, it’s an incredibly emotional movie,” del Toro said. With its focus on the parental relationship between Victor Frankenstein and his creation, Frankenstein sounds similar to del Toro’s last film, the stop-motion Pinocchio. “[Geppetto] has asked, almost like in a horror tale: ‘I want my child back.’ And the child comes back in a way that he doesn’t recognize,” del Toro told Polygon about Pinocchio in 2022. It marked his return to animation after a pooping burglar destroyed his first attempt at the medium. Now that’s what I’d consider a horror story.

In the qualifications section, the listing points to a requirement for “advanced expertise in using generative AI tools such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, ChatGPT, or similar platforms.” In the duties section, the listing says one of the concept artist’s jobs will be to “Refine and polish 2D artwork created by both human artists and generative AI tools.”

The new job listing at the Sony-owned studio comes after a recent GDC 2025 survey found that companies are moving ahead with AI tools whether their employees agree with using them or not. Concerns about the technology range from the ethics of using tools trained on stealing other people’s work to worries about continued layoffs as companies seize on the hype around generative AI to cut workforces. Anecdotally at least, artists and writers appear to have been particularly hard hit in the most recent waves of mass game industry layoffs.

“I suspect there will be a dual demand in gaming: one for AI-driven innovative experiences and another for handcrafted, thoughtful content,” PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst told the BBC in December. “Striking the right balance between leveraging AI and preserving the human touch will be crucial.” It was revealed earlier this year that Sony had at least experimented with turning its Horizon Zero Dawn hero Aloy into an AI-powered chatbot.

Meanwhile, finished games that incorporate AI-generated assets have been forced to disclose the practice on storefronts like Steam. Call of Duty is one of the franchises frequently dunked on by fans for making use of what appear to be AI-generated cosmetics, player cards, and marketing materials.
