007 First Light’s first proper footage reveals a posh blockbuster with bubbles of Hitman

by admin September 4, 2025

Hitman hitmakers Io Interactive have just screened some extensive footage of their James Bond adaptation, 007: First Light, during Sony’s latest State of Play livestream. As you might expect, it looks and sounds a lot like Hitman, but the whole “James Bond” thing is a definite pace-changer. Catch the whole video below, plus a hasty, opinionated summary from me.

Watch on YouTube

Sony and Io’s Jamesplay blowout spans a couple of First Light missions, the first being a multiple-agent undercover affair during an exclusive chess tournament held in Slovakia, which begins with our hero kicking his heels in a carpark while disguised as a chauffeur. All seams peaceful. But then our hero remembers that he’s Bond, James Bond, and has better things to do than fulfil his allotted role in a painstakingly organised MI6 operation.

The subsequent 20 minutes or so can be divided into five courses. First, a dash of infiltration that readily channels Agent 47, with Bond using environmental distractions to bamboozle security staff and steal their IDs. Always a fan of bouncers who are hopelessly baffled by leaky hosepipes.

Then, there’s a dollop of social stealth, with Bond hustling a bartender for clues about a weirdo bellhop. Then, it’s time for an Xbox 360-ass car chase with a femme fatale in the passenger seat. Next, James must blow up one million red gas tanks while cover-shooting through a crowded airfield to an escaping transport plane. Then, he must do a crafty QTE hack on the plane’s attitude controls, so as to wrongfoot the on-board defenders and ultimately, turn the plane into a meteor shower.

If it were me, I’d still be in that carpark playing Tetris on my Q-phone. But I am not Bond, James Bond. Io’s version of the character is as smug, quippy and basically unbearable as you’d expect from a Bond actor pre-Daniel Craig. I rate him seven Rogers out of Connery so far.

The other Jamesplay excerpt from Sony’s sprawling Bondcast sees the handsome cad infiltrating a gala in Kensington, London. It may be down to the State of Play presentation, but this one feels much more like a Hitman World of Assassination mission, with Bond navigating the crowd, eavesdropping for interaction opportunities, pickpocketing the help, and generally keeping it on the down-low.

Io and Sony polish everything off with an edited section showing off the game’s various supporting systems. Certain actions earn you Instinct, which can be spent to bluff your way out of confrontations, lure guards into takedowns, and slow time for headshots.

You also get gadgets, of course, such as a laser with which to drop chandeliers on those foolish enough to enjoy their crystal glow, and smoke grenades for when you can’t be arsed to hide properly. Lethal force appears to depend on Bond being granted “License to Kill” by his handlers – you can’t just murder somebody with a pair of scissors whenever you fancy, for you are Bond, James Bond, not some barcode-wearing hooligan.

All in all, I think this looks entertaining. It’s either a Hitman game that has gracefully yielded to Bond’s appetite for getaway shoot-outs, or a Bond game that has studied long and well under Agent 47’s tutelage – take your pick. It’s out March 27th 2026.

Marvel Rivals Season Four Adds Daredevil and Angela To The Roster, Launches Next Week

by admin September 3, 2025

Season four of Marvel Rivals is officially known as The Heart of the Dragon, and it’s introducing one character fans of the (super) hero shooter have been hoping for: Daredevil. In the cinematic reveal trailer, he faces off against Angela, the long lost sister of Thor and the other character joining the roster. You can check it out for yourself below.

The trailer shows the two characters seemingly acting as representatives of Heaven and Hell. This is a particularly interesting take on Daredevil, as his stories, especially in the recent live-action series, traditionally focus on street-level crime with minimal super powers. In this trailer, he also seems to unleash energized punches and a powerful devil form. It’s hard to tell what his canonical abilities are, versus what are stylized visuals for the animation, but Marvel Rivals sometimes provides original takes on characters and their origin stories, so it could go either way.

“The Timestream Entanglement has drawn the Seven Capitals together, forming the Heart of Heaven. After Knull’s fall, Hela is imprisoned in the An’Hay-Zhidi, where Dizang—Devil of the Eighth City—dares her to atone for her sins,” the video description reads. “But Angela will not forgive her betrayal. She arrives in the Heart of Heaven demanding Hela be handed over, yet its guardian refuses to surrender someone under his protection. Justice will be served and a debt will be paid.”

In a following, more detailed video, the developers at Netease confirm that Angela would be a vanguard, using her ichor to form weapons and a shield. She’ll also get a team-up with Thor, who will be able to throw a thunder spear which he can jump to, dealing damage upon landing. Other team ups are adjusting as well: Magik and Black Panther are losing theirs, but Magik is getting a tether ability as a part of the team up between Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange, while Black Panther is joining the team up between Namor and Hulk.

Season four will also bring other, more minor new features. A new arcade hub will hold new and returning modes like big brain blast, clone rumble, conquest, conquest (annihilation), and doom match, along with free fight, which removes limits on duplicate heroes. You’ll also be able to mark your preferred heroes into a favorites tab, other players can see custom ultimate effects, and, hilariously, they’re adding a slow walk setting to the PC version of the game because they “heard how much you like slow walking for superhero aura farming.”

Lastly, they announced that rank placement matches are coming to the game eventually, but won’t be ready in time for season four. Players have expressed frustration that each season resets them so far down the competitive ladder that it’s frustrating to have to fight through lower ranks with less skilled players to get back to their standard challenge, and placement matches are a possible solution to that.

Angela and the rest of Marvel Rivals season four come to the game for free a week from Friday, on September 12.

007: First Light gets a March 2026 release date and a $300 collector’s edition

by admin September 3, 2025

As part of Sony’s big Bond-themed PlayStation State of Play, developer IO Interactive has revealed 007: First Light will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC on 27th March next year. Additionally, the studio has unveiled a collector’s edition with a price tag likely to leave you at least slightly shaken if not completely stirred.

007: First Light was announced all the way back in 2021, under the name Project 007, but it wasn’t until earlier this year that IO began discussing the game in earnest. The gist is that First Light serves as an origin story for IO’s Bond – part of what’s hoped to be a trilogy – charting the iconic spy’s early days as a “young, resourceful, and sometimes reckless new recruit”. It’s promising stealthy espionage, daredevil action set-pieces, cool spy gadgets, and seemingly everything else you might expect from a Bond game.

IO showed off some of that in more detail during Sony’s latest PlayStation State of Play showcase, and you can read more about 007: First Light’s gameplay fundamentals elsewhere on Eurogamer. But perhaps the biggest news of the evening was a confirmed release date. We already knew it was coming next year, but IO has now firmed that up into a 27th March launch. Additionally, it’s also announced a bunch of different editions as pre-orders get underway.

007: First Light gameplay reveal.Watch on YouTube

Anyone that pre-orders 007: First Light’s £59.99/€69.99/$69.99 USD Standard digital edition – which can be purchased for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store) – will be upgraded to the Deluxe Edition at no extra cost. This gets you the game itself, 24 hours of early access, and a Deluxe Upgrade cosmetics bundle featuring four exclusive outfit skins, one new weapon skin, and the Gleaming pack. After launch, the Deluxe Edition will cost £69.99/€79.99/$79.99 USD.

There’s also a physical release – known as the Specialist edition – featuring all the above plus the Classic Tuxedo Skin, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC. And for the big spenders out there, IO is releasing a limited edition Legacy variant. This physical-only release for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC costs a not-insignificant £259.99/€299.99/$299.99 USD and includes everything featured in other editions, plus a couple of exclusive weapon and outfit skins, a Golden Gun figurine with a stand and secret compartment, a certificate of authenticity, and a magnetic steel case. Oh, and a great big box.

Whether IO Interactive can pull off its ambitious Bond origin story remains to be seen, but Eurogamer’s Alex Donaldson previously opined that signs are good. “In one trailer, [the Hitman studio] has totally proven it ‘gets’ Bond,” he wrote, “and it’s all about the salivating consumerism.”

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Leaked Fallout Merch Appears To Use AI-Generated Slop

Leaked Fallout Merch Appears To Use AI-Generated Slop

by admin September 3, 2025

Earlier this week, someone leaked what they claim to be new Fallout-themed merchandise that will reportedly soon be available on Target shelves around the United States. But fans think that at least one piece of leaked merch is using AI-generated imagery, aka slop.

On September 2, a user on the Fallout subreddit posted a short video of them seemingly pulling out pieces of not-yet-announced Fallout-themed merchandise in a warehouse-like setting. The user claimed that the Fallout goodies would be sold at Target starting in November or December. The original video has since been deleted, possibly because the original poster was nervous about getting in trouble with Target. But Kotaku viewed the video before it was deleted, and the merch seemed real. And one item, Fallout-themed hot sauce, appears to be shipping to stores in a box that has AI-generated imagery on the back.

As spotted by PCGamesn, users in the comments below the leaked Target video began focusing on peculiarities in the hot sauce artwork. In the image, a couple is seen sitting at a table eating a Deathclaw’s hand. But the man can be seen using his knife and fork to cup up a napkin. The fork looks oddly shaped, too. Others pointed out that the Deathclaw hand seems to be floating oddly above the plate. The man’s right hand also seems off. All of this would lead one to believe this new Fallout merch is using AI-generated artwork.

Kotaku contacted Bethesda about the leaked art, but didn’t receive a response before publication. It should be noted that Bethesda likely contracted this artwork out via another company and didn’t create the image.

The use of AI-generated slop has become more and more prevalent in marketing and advertising over the last two years as companies desperate to make the line go up cut corners to prove to investors they aren’t being left behind as AI-powered tech continues to grow. In fact, this isn’t even the first time an official Fallout-related artwork has been scrutinized by fans for some strange, AI-like oddities. Will a man using a terrible fork to cut up a napkin stop collectors and fans from buying this piece of Fallout merch? Probably not, which is what companies are counting on.

Help a spaceship give birth before it collides with a star in Ultrasound

by admin September 3, 2025

How are you feeling today? Relatively untroubled by visions of squirming, organic gunk clogging your vessel’s exhaust ports as you fall steadily toward an enormous ball of fire? We’ll see about that.

I’m here to tell you about Ultrasound, in which you are stranded aboard a spacecraft that has been colonised by growths of the Gigery persuasion. If you don’t purge critical systems pronto, you’re going to end up the wrong side of a photosphere. Here’s a trailer.

Watch on YouTube

“Use an ultrasound machine to diagnose and do surgery on a grotesque infection spreading aboard a space freighter,” explains the Steam page. “Craft meds, upgrade your machine, find new surgical tools, and restore ship systems before you collide with a star. Soon, something will be born.”

This sounds like the unsexy edition of Erostasis. You’ll need to craft medicines to thwart spreading growths, and free up navigation and life support before it’s too late. There are several endings to unlock, and I’m guessing the majority are not pleasant.

Ultrasound might seem like a gross-out game with a gimmick, but it has a serious core. It’s “being developed by two new fathers – Walter Woods (Lead Developer) and Jason Scalfano (Lead Artist) – and is inspired by their respective tragic and joyful paths to parenthood,” as the press release explains.

“So many of us know the hope and horror of the ultrasound machine,” the developers write. “The mystery. The ambiguity. The flickering image of life and death. We hope our game captures these difficult feelings and resonates with players.”

I respect the sincerity here. That said, given that there appear to be notes of memoir at work, I would quite like to know if the mothers of Woods and Scalfano’s children had any say on the game’s portrayal of pregnancy as body horror. They are not mentioned anywhere in the press materials. Ultrasound is out “soon”.

Rami Ismail’s New Game, Australia Did It, Is A ‘Tactical Reverse Bullet Hell’

by admin September 3, 2025

Rami Ismail is known recently for his work advising and consulting with game developers around the world, but he’s also an accomplished developer in his own right, with games like Ridiculous Fishing, Luftrausers, and Nuclear Throne on his résumé. To that end, today he revealed his latest project, Australia Did It, and announced it’s coming to PC later this year. You can check out the reveal trailer below.

Australia Did It (which is co-developed by Aesthetician Labs) claims to invent a new genre called tactical reverse bullet hell. It’s a big swing to attempt to define a new style of game before yours even comes out, but Ismail’s press release makes even stronger claims than that.

“I believe the games industry has been failing at supporting developer innovation and experimentation,” reads a direct quote from Ismail in the press release. “Publishers, investors, and shareholders fund the same few safe bets, later and later in development – forcing even the most creative developers to make safe games with predictable ideas, and force in the latest flavour-of-the-day.”

Ismail goes on to say that the way to break out of this cycle is to support games with truly new ideas, and that Mystic Forge, the publisher of Australia Did It, is doing exactly that by funding the project.

Australia Did It is a game about transporting cargo by train across a monster-infested, dried-out Atlantic Ocean. In the first part of an encounter, you’ll place units along a grid defending your train as it prepares for the journey, using strategic grid-based combat to hold off monsters long enough for the journey to begin. Once your engine departs, it becomes a bullet hell machine, blasting out overwhelming amounts of ammunition the bullet hell genre typically has players try to avoid.

I don’t personally see the genre title sticking – it’s too many words, for one – but the game looks good so far, and I’m interested in trying it for myself soon. Australia Did It launches on PC later this year.

Shift Up to expand Stellar Blade franchise after successful launch across multiple platforms

by admin September 3, 2025

Shift Up has announced in a recent financial report that it intends to expand the Stellar Blade franchise with “various derivative works”.

The financial report (which can be read here though is entirely in Korean) dives into the success of its different products including Stellar Blade in the section titled “Main Products and Services”. There, the company highlights the game’s stellar (zing) performance both at launch and with its port to PC.

The report states (via machine translation): “Through this, [Stellar Blade] was able to effectively secure a new user base and further strengthen its position as a global AAA franchise IP. We plan to develop various derivative works to expand the [Stellar Blade] IP so that [Stellar Blade] can establish itself as a well-made IP.”

Here’s the launch trailer for Stellar Blade.Watch on YouTube

This should not be a massive surprise for two major reasons. The first being that Stellar Blade has proven exceptionally successful for Shift Up, especially when you consider it was an original work for the studio. The game sold over a million copies on PC within three days of the Steam version going live, after all.

Secondly, Shift Up previously stated its intention to make a Stellar Blade 2 back in May, courtesy of an investor presentation. So true Stellar Blade fanatics have further evidence of something to look forward to. If you want a tinfoil hat angle to this bit of news, it’s interesting to note this most recent financial report makes note of a general intent to make “derivative works”, rather than solely stating a sequel. Though, that’s pure speculation.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Prey 2 Resurfaces 14-Years After Its Infamously Bizarre Cancelation

by admin September 3, 2025

Why was a decision that saved Borderlands such a dumb one to make? What was it like to play Prey 2 at E3 2011? Will Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 eventually come to Switch 2? Welcome to the latest edition of Morning Checkpoint, Kotaku‘s daily roundup of gaming news and culture. Yours truly is still recovering from the weekend’s PAX West marathon and I have a bunch of interviews and previews still to publish on the site throughout the week. In the meantime, let’s take a short walk down memory lane.

Watch someone play Bethesda’s canceled sci-fi shooter Prey 2

Let’s talk about Prey 2. The short version is that Prey 2 was a sequel to a popular 2006 shooter by Human Head Studios about solving puzzles on an alien spaceship. It got a big blowout showing at E3 2011, including a playable demo that generated a ton of buzz. As a bounty hunter in an alien city, players used guns and parkour to chase suspects and choose how to apprehend them. A robot punished you if you caused too much immersive sim chaos, Grand Theft Auto style.

The game was supposed to come out in 2012 but never did. What was most surprising of all was that Bethesda never provided clear reasons for why the project was suddenly scuttled. There were reports of contractual disputes and Bethesda leveraging the Prey 2 publishing agreement to try to fully acquire Human Head Studios. Ultimately, Arkane began working on a reboot of the game that would become 2017’s very different sci-fi immersive sim Prey. This is where the term of endearment “press sneak fuck” was born.

Now fresh footage of the original Prey 2 has leaked on YouTube under the account “David Halsted.” There are five videos totaling just over 20 minutes of gameplay showing off different features as well as the E3 demo. “I remember when they revealed this at PAX back in the day,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “The whole con was buzzing about how cool it was and how hype we were for it. And then we got whatever it rebooted as. Dream revival game though.”

Borderlands devs reflect on its “insane” art style overhaul

Gearbox’s loot shooter series is known for its Diablo-style loot, rude attitude, and bubblegum wrapper cel-shaded art style. But it was not always thus. Early in development, the first game in the shooter series looked like a broke knock-off of Fallout 3 and Rage. That’s how it appeared in a demo at E3, and on the cover of a 2007 Game Informer containing a deep dive on the game back before anyone had ever even heard of Claptrap.

The magazine is back with a new series of interviews about Gearbox’s race to overhaul the grim, gritty, and dull look of the game to help it stand out and eventually become the mega-hit it is today. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford gave members of the art team permission to look into overhauling the art style, even as milestone deadlines were breathing down their necks:

It was, like, five guys with two weeks to go mess around with the look and the feel, and I immediately knew I made a mistake. I was like, ‘S—. We’re trying to get to Alpha, dude. There’s a business here. I’m responsible for other people’s money. I’m going to let these guys spin for two weeks, which means they’re going to be even more invested in what they’re doing, and then I have to go in and look at what they did, and I have to shoot it in the head. That’s what’s going to happen here. Son of a b—-. I’m an idiot. Why did I do that?’ But there was something in my heart that knew that we had to at least look at and explore. I knew we weren’t right.

There’s another 28 Years Later movie coming in just a few months called The Bone Temple

Ralph Fiennes got so ripped for 28 Years Later that they made him the star of the sequel just 12 months later. The Bone Temple will briefly have Cillian Murphy return as Jim from the original movie as well. He’ll have a much bigger role in a trilogy-capping third movie arriving after The Bone Temple.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 director can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a Switch 2 port

The turn-based GOTY contender seems like a perfect fit for Nintendo’s new handheld hybrid. Will it get there sooner or later? Sandfall Interactive isn’t saying. “We have some possibilities that we will explore, but at the moment we cannot confirm anything,” the studio told Nintenderos. That sounds like a studio who promised not to disclose that they have a Switch 2 dev kit.

Stellar Blade 2 is fully in development

That’s according to developer ShiftUp’s latest financial report. “We are actively pursuing the franchise development of the ‘Stellar Blade’ IP and are currently developing a sequel to ‘Stellar Blade.’” The game is supposed to have a bigger world and some additional action mechanics. In the meantime, the first game is another candidate ripe for porting to Switch 2.
