Nintendo Only Creates New IP When Gameplay Doesn’t Fit Existing Franchises, Former Dev Says

The more things change, the more they stay the same, and for Nintendo, the company still relies on its legacy IP when it starts to develop new games. While we’ve seen multiple studios and publishers launch new brands over the years, Nintendo has largely stuck to the classics for its new releases, and it often doesn’t see a reason to build a new IP. Why? According to a former developer, gameplay comes first and the “wrapper” is chosen based on which franchise fits the project best.

“New franchises haven’t come out simply because there’s no real need to make them,” former Nintendo software developer Ken Watanabe said to Bloomberg. “When Nintendo wants to do something new, it’s basically about the gameplay mechanics first–about creating a new way to play. As for the skin or the wrapper, they don’t really fuss over it. They just pick whatever fits that new gameplay best.”

RoadCraft’s first expansion adds a bridge layer, two new maps, and the option to make your life much tougher

The first bit of DLC for mud-splattered infrastructure setup sim RoadCraft has rumbled out of the garage, bringing with it a couple of new maps, several extra vehicles, and some extra-tough options for those craving a hard time.

One of those fresh rides is a bridge layer, and you best believe it’ll end up wedged somewhere improbable with its wheels spinning helplessly once I get my hands on it. How can you mess up motoring towards a gap, and pressing the ‘commence bridgening’ button? It’ll be possible.

Alongside that bridge layer in the Rebuild expansion’s offerings are two new Central European maps. The first, Contamination, is all about cleanup duty following a train crash dumping something not nice in a river thanks to some earthquaking. Then, there’s Wash-Out, which as its name suggests is a rather wet venture into a “reclaimed wasteland” to get an oil processor up and running again.

Developers Saber Interactive have split 100 new missions between the two, many of which will likely amount to pick thing up or unfuck this please, as is the runner series’ tradition. I’m a tad disappointed in the fact that aside from the all-new Vostok MU-97 ‘Ant’ bridge layer, the other four extra vehicles are just revamped versions of rides from the base game. There’s a bridge layer conversion for the Tayga dump truck, plus beefed up variants of the Thunder scout, Tuz 119 scout, and Mule T1 crane lorry.

That’s it for the stuff included in the expansion, but there’s also some free stuff on top of that, in the form of the Wayfarer ST7050 fuel truck and some advanced difficulty options. The latter includes “tougher fuel management, harsher convoy conditions, and stricter recovery rules, while adjusting costs and economy for a more demanding, realistic experience”.

While these are features some players have been asking for since release, back when I reviewed it I quite liked the fact that it omitted some of the nitty gritty management you’ve got to juggle in a lot of these games. It was something that helped set the RoadCraft experience apart from its muddy siblings SnowRunner and Expeditions, both of which are still getting fairly regular additions for those who want an excuse to hop back into them.

Meanwhile, our Brendy summed the RoadCrafting experience up thus in his review:

RoadCraft is a podcast game, in the same vein as Truck Simulator or Elite: Dangerous. There’s a big place for games like this in the world, sims that excel in delivering a specific kind of wonderful and comforting boredom. Slow tasks that act as a reassuring sedative in the manic whorl of life. But RoadCraft’s start-and-go flow makes it a bumpier ride for me. I was falling asleep, but I never quite drifted off into its promised dreamland.

I can definitely see what he means about the constructadriving sim having a bit of a mixed-up ethos when it comes to taking it slow all of the time, or being able to speed along if you wish. As the Brendo also wrote, whether you enjoy RoadCraft’ll likely depend on how much time you’re willing to give it, especially when things go wrong.

If you’ve dug this sort of thing before and can clear the calendar, this Rebuild expansion looks a decent reason to fire it up. If only to see whether the bridge layer’s as satisfying to use as the stump mulchers and tree harvesters.

Already I’m convinced, Hollow Knight: Silksong is a hymn to the art of paying attention – and it absolutely rules

Look down. That’s my early tip for Hollow Knight: Silksong, which I’ve been playing for an evening and a morning by this point. On a high ledge? Above a promising gap? Look down. Chances are the developers have put something just within visible range to guide you a little.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

I am – this is a weird sentence – quite a fan of looking down in games. Or rather, I’m a fan of games that specifically allow you to look down. Hollow Knight, Silksong, Spelunky: these are games in which situational awareness really matters. Wherever you are, they seem to say, you are inside a moment. This is not just an empty stretch of gameworld, or padding between here and there. Look down and you might avoid something dangerous. Or you might see something wonderful.

The looking down spirit goes deep too. If I had to sum up my time with Silksong so far, I’d say that it’s a game that prioritises paying attention above all else. That might not seem as if the sexiest of virtues is being foregrounded, but paying attention in games is actually brilliant. Games that need you to pay attention absolutely rule.

Metroidvanias often put a premium on this stuff, of course. Look at the map, but look hard: are there promising chunks of negative space in there where something might be hidden? Look at the walls, but really try to see what your eyes are passing over. Are there cracks that suggest new routes, new chambers? Is there more to this world hidden in front of you?

In Silksong this goes a lot deeper. Bosses? So far I’ve found at least one which is significantly less of a hurdle if you really look at the environment in which you’re fighting. Collectibles? Silksong’s main currency – I absolutely adore this – is rosary beads. Tiny little things, vital for buying maps and supplies but easy to miss as they scatter across the ground. You have to really pay attention to make sure you’ve grabbed them all.

Onwards and upwards. Silksong is not against cheesing, and making various elements of the resource grind a little easier for you, but you need to spot these opportunities, in the same way you once spotted a bonfire in Dark Souls that allowed you to collect souls in vast quantities. It wants to link distant spots and provide handy respites, but it wants you to work for these things – not just to earn them, but to see the possibilities for them.

I almost suspected a lot of this. Of course I knew that Silksong would be one of those games you have to really lean in to play, the kind that sees your shoulders tensed and your whole body tilted towards the screen, as if your entire being knows it can’t miss a thing. But I think I always sort of knew that the extra development time was not just being used to make the game bigger, but to make it richer, more alive with incidental elements and secrets and the details that make a design feel packed with potential.

True story: I’m not sleeping brilliantly at the moment. For whatever reason I’m awake and trying to get comfortable at three in the morning, desperate to find a way to keep my eyes shut. But after just one evening playing Silksong, I stepped away from the Switch 2 and realised I was absolutely exhausted. All that paying attention! I had put everything into what I’d been doing because the game had asked it of me, because the game had already put everything it had into the experience too. Last night I slept beautifully. And dreamt of caverns, and bugs, and secrets that were hidden beneath my feet.

Silksong Achievement Hints At A Much Longer Game

Despite all of the hype, little is known about what’s actually in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Developer Team Cherry has been confidently tight-lipped about all of the secrets hiding inside it’s latest Metroidvania Soulslike. But a list of achievements and trophies for the sequel hints at just how much bigger than the original game it might be. The short answer: a lot.

Before even playing the game you can look at a list of Silksong‘s achievements (or trophies on PlayStation 5). One in particular provides an interesting clue about the larger scope. As Game File‘s Stephen Totilo pointed out on Bluesky, the “speed completion” achievement requires players to hit 100 percent completion in under 30 hours. A similar achievement in the first Hollow Knight only gave players 20 hours. Does that mean Silksong is roughly 33 percent bigger than its predecessor?

Maybe!

 

Mind you, the above achievement is effectively for a 100 percent speedrun, not an average playthrough. Most players have taken around 27 hours to beat Hollow Knight‘s main campaign and up to 64 hours to defeat every boss and find last secret. Assuming Team Cherry is keeping the completionist achievement in Silksong just as difficult to get, we might expect it to take, on average, 10-30 hours longer to do everything there is to do in the game.

While just a speculative guesstimate, the assumption aligns with some of what Team Cherry hinted at in their first and only pre-release interview. When explaining why the sequel took seven years to make, the developers said part of the reason was that they just couldn’t stop themselves from continuing to add new things to Silksong: more towns, NPCs, boss fights, and seemingly many more secrets.

Of course, if you’re a world record Hollow Knight speedrunner like Kyle “LoLNebula” Dodson, you still might be able to 100-percent Silksong in just a few hours. That includes collecting all of the upgrades, charms, and improvements, and fighting lots of bosses multiple times. In fairness Dodson, like lots of other Hollow Knight superfans, has had over eight years to practice.

Disney Dreamlight Valley Is Getting Horseback Riding In Its Next Expansion

The next expansion for Disney Dreamlight Valley is on the way, adding three brand-new biomes, a handful of iconic Disney horses to befriend–and a new horseback riding mechanic. The Wishblossom Ranch expansion doesn’t have a release date yet, but Disney will reveal more about the upcoming content in a showcase stream on October 15.

For now, Disney has teased just part of the upcoming expansion, revealing that one of Wishblossom Ranch’s three new mountainous biomes will be called Wishing Alps. The new content will partner you with characters from across Disney’s slate of films, including Snow White, mischievous pixie Tinkerbell, and Maximus–the noble white steed from Tangled.

These are just some of the characters who will be a part of the Ranch storyline–with Disney teasing in particular that more iconic Disney horses will be joining the equestrian-themed expansion. Alongside existing Disney horse characters, the expansion will also grant players their own customizable mount, which can be tailored to match your own avatar.

It may come as no surprise that the horse-themed expansion will also be adding a brand-new horseback riding mechanic, which will have uses beyond the ranch and into the Valley itself. Disney promises that horseback riding will change the way you travel around the game map and also how you accomplish your various activities across Dreamlight Valley.

This is just some of what is coming in the Wishblossom Ranch expansion, with more to be announced in a showcase stream coming on October 15. The stream will reveal more biomes, characters, and features coming with the expansion, as well as giving a look at some of the ranch and stable decor on the way.

Silksong has murdered Steam | Rock Paper Shotgun

Well, who could have seen this coming: Hollow Knight: Silksong has taken Steam offline, or at least, laid waste to large swathes of it. Within seconds of its release this afternoon, Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight sequel brought Valve’s servers to a halt, cue endlessly loading pages when trying to access the checkout, browse the store or do much of anything.

I can’t even sign in. I’m currently staring into the void of an infinite “loading user data” loop. I can’t get the “Most Played” chart to load in a web browser, either, but according to SteamDB, there are 101,828 people playing already. Smash cut to live footage of Gabe Newell ejected screaming from his exploding yacht, hotly pursued by a cloud of burning hornets.

If you’re hoping to play on Steam in the next hour or so, you may encounter the following dread message: “Error Code: 2811-7429. Couldn’t connect to the server. The network may be busy, or there may be a problem with the server. Please try again later.” There are already thousands of reports of a Steam outage on Downdetector. Valve have yet to comment. The game is also available on GOG, who have a much smaller audience, but I hear they’re having similar difficulties.

May the good gods save our engineers in this time of Silksinging. May the good gods save them, at least, from wrathful emails. Having to wait an hour or two for demand to die back so you can play Silksong is no great burden. Still, as ever with Steam overloads, you do have to wonder whether Valve as a whole could have prepared better for this.

Silksong has been Steam’s most-wishlisted game since forever. I’m not clear on what Valve do when they know something is going to be mega-popular – I assume it involves buying more servers, but perhaps they just pour energy drinks over the existing ones while uttering the Optimiser’s Prayer. Perhaps they just stick a bike pump in the outer wall of the server farm and have an intern crank the handle for 24 hours.

If you’re trying to play, best of luck. James claims he’s already got it downloading, but then he’s always trying to be the popular one.

SEGA has announced that Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage – a new and improved version of the 3D fighting game – will be getting a closed beta test on 11th September.

Players on PC eager to take part will have to request access to the closed beta on the Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage Steam page to hop in, while console players must create a SEGA account to receive a code from the campaign website.

The closed beta will feature online matchmaking including a ranked mode, an offline training mode, and an offline arcade mode. So both competitive ranked ladder climbers and combo lab monsters should have plenty to do.

The closed beta will start at 4AM BST on the 11th (or 8PM PT / 11PM ET on the 10th for those in North America) and will run until the following Tuesday, the 16th September. That gives closed beta players the whole weekend and some change to get their games in.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O World Stage is an updated version of R.E.V.O, itself a massive overhaul of the original Virtua Fighter 5. This version adds a new world stage single player mode, as well as a training mode and the infamous Dural as a playable character.

Silksong Hits Half A Million Players On Steam

Hollow Knight: Silksong may have crashed Steam, PSN, and the Switch eStore with its launch, but that doesn’t seem to have hurt its success any once they all crawled back online. Team Cherry’s enormously anticipated Metroidvania sequel has just reached over half a million concurrent players on Steam alone. That’s a figure that doesn’t include Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch numbers, nor indeed PC players who bought the game on GOG or elsewhere, or who are playing it via Game Pass. It’s fair to say things are going pretty well.

At around 10.30 ET this morning, September 4, Kotaku team members began dropping Silksong‘s concurrent player numbers as compiled by SteamDB into the Slack. 156,271 was the first big number to astonish us. The original Hollow Knight‘s all-time peak was 72,916, and even that was set only yesterday. On release in 2017, it was lucky to see just a thousand, its popularity building up to a big August 2018 spike of 10,000 concurrent players. It took until May 2022 to find 20,000, and only hit those numbers again last month after the announcement of the release date for the long-delayed sequel. I explain all this because it’s fairly important context when looking at the hundreds of thousands who have shown up for Silksong.

By 12.30 today, that number had reached 245,587, and it seemed like it might be time to write about hitting a quarter of a million. But the number kept going up. At 1 p.m. it was 382,195, and just six minutes later had risen to over 400,000. At 1.30, 478k, and then at 2 p.m. it reached a ridiculous 534,450. That makes it the game with the 18th highest number of concurrent players on Steam, ever. It just beat the hugely popular Battlefield 6 beta weekend into 19th. That, let’s not forget, was a free weekend with a multiplayer game—this is a 2D single-player platformer.

Of course, a large part of Silksong‘s launch day success is the extraordinary build-up and anticipation it’s received. Absent from industry showcases for years on end, its potential audience became almost cult-like as it endured the long stretch of silence. The original Hollow Knight was much more of a sleeper hit, slowly building its audience and reputation, hence lacking any headline spike at any point over the last eight years. It’ll be interesting to see how long Silksong can maintain this momentum, as people get over the sense of disbelief that it actually really exists and is finally here. The number has started dropping for the first time all day as I’ve written this, just by five thousand or so, but it suggests it’s calming down for the moment. Of course, this could start climbing again once the U.S. workforce that didn’t book the day off are released home to reach their computers and consoles.

In the meantime, it strongly suggests that Team Cherry were very wise to pick the price point that surprised so many. Yes, the game could absolutely have sold incredibly well at $60, based on reputation alone, but going for $20 vastly increases the potential audience who will pay right now, rather than waiting six months for a 90 percent off Steam sale. Given the half a million people simultaneously playing on Steam likely only represents a fraction of those who will have bought the game today, this will be a massive financial success. And we’re just talking about today’s sales.

Whether the game’s actually good or not? That, rather intriguingly, is something everyone’s finding out simultaneously today, given no review code was supplied to press. The lines who played a brief demo at Gamescom had an inkling, but it’ll be tomorrow before consensus begins to appear.

Where To Find Spine Cores In Hollow Knight: Silksong For Flexile Spine Wish

Hollow Knight: Silksong isn’t a linear adventure by any stretch of the imagination. It expects you to explore thoroughly as you chart your path through its perilous maps. Doing so will sometimes lead you to some unique NPCs who ask you to complete quests known as Wishes, such as the Seamstress you’ll encounter in the Far Fields. This character will assign you the Flexile Spine Wish, tasking you with finding 25 Spine Cores. Luckily, you won’t have to make too long a journey to collect these items.

Where to find Spine Cores in Hollow Knight: Silksong

To collect Spine Cores, you must find enemies known as Hokers, which look like floating white balls with a green beard and spikes. If you leave the Seamstress’s home and head to the right, you can move through some rooms filled with plenty of these enemies, so you won’t have to travel far to get what you need.

These enemies are called Hokers.

However, instead of focusing on killing these enemies, your goal is to harvest their spikes. Each time you hit them, they’ll fire off spikes that will stick to nearby surfaces. You can then strike these spikes to make them drop an orb containing a Spine Core. Do this 25 times, and you’ll have everything you need.

Each Hoker can take three hits before they die. The trick to getting the most bang for your buck is to hit them one time and wait for them to regenerate spikes again. If you hit them before they regenerate spikes, you’ll ultimately end up with fewer Spine Cores from that Hoker.

Make sure you hit the spikes stuck on surfaces, then pick up the Spine Cores.

Additionally, beware that the spikes Hokers fire out will disappear after a few moments, so make quick work of them to ensure you aren’t missing out on the Spine Cores within.

Once you’ve collected all 25 Spine Cores, return to the Seamstress to earn your reward, which is the Drifter’s Coat. This upgrade lets you glide after a jump, and it’ll allow you to ride the air currents you’ve probably seen around the area. Now, you can explore even further than ever before.
