Hollow Knight: Silksong speedrunners are already finding game-changing skips and faster movement techniques

Hollow Knight: Silksong hasn’t even been out 24 hours, and already speedrunners are pulling the game apart in search of tricks and techniques to shave off precious seconds from future playthroughs. Already, they’ve made some key discoveries.

A select few in the dedicated Hollow Knight Discord server are sharing clips to each other, laying the foundation for a bustling competition on who can beat the game the fastest. Already, players have discovered a technique to travel faster than the standard sprint, as well as various skips using the aerial downward attack.

Users like SkysThLimit have discovered you can easily bait various flying enemies to ledges otherwise unscalable early in the game. Then, using the aforementioned downward attack (affectionately called pogoing), players can gain some extra vertical distance access rooms early.

This style of skip was numerous throughout the original Hollow Knight too, and it looks like some of the old favourites are still as good as ever. However, several day-one speedrunners have pointed out, Hornet’s unique movement abilities allow for new strategies too.

If you do a jump and immediately dash (once you’ve unlocked it) and repeat the process over and over, you can move horizontally across the ground far faster than if you were just running normally.

These may seem small, but Silksong’s fastest playthroughs will be built on small tricks like these. Considering the game has an achievement for beating it in under five hours, you can be sure maneuvers like these will be sorely needed in the weeks to come.

Disney x Fortnite: Everything We Know So Far

In early 2024, Disney invested more than a billion dollars in Fortnite creator Epic Games and announced some sort of new Disney-powered metaverse experience. We’ve already seen a few aspects of this deal come to fruition, like Fortnite skins for the Incredibles and the Disney Villains, plus new Marvel and Star Wars-themed seasons. There’s been a lot of Disney in Fortnite since that announcement, in other words.

But the big Disney x Fortnite metaverse mode has yet to see the light of day, and the project remains shrouded in mystery. Let’s take a look at what we know about it so far.

What actually is the Disney x Fortnite mode?

We don’t really know. There’s been no teaser images or videos, and nobody is talking about it in terms that we would consider concrete. But here’s how Disney described it in the original announcement:

“In addition to being a world-class games experience and interoperating with Fortnite, the new persistent universe will offer a multitude of opportunities for consumers to play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more. Players, gamers and fans will be able to create their own stories and experiences, express their fandom in a distinctly Disney way, and share content with each other in ways that they love.”

While most of this is too nebulous to accurately break down with any real confidence, the key detail there is that Epic’s new Disney experience is described as being its own thing that “interoperates” with Fortnite, rather than being a Fortnite mode. The reason for that distinction is that Disney x Fortnite will be its own walled garden of content–not every Fortnite skin will work with it, and there will be skins that work in the Disney mode that don’t work in the rest of Fortnite.

“Not every outfit will be able to do everything,” Epic executive Saxs Persson told The Verge in October 2024. “A [Lego] minifig doesn’t hold a gun. Brands should be able to enforce the brand guidelines to the degree that they’re comfortable with that brand being associated with particular ratings.”

In March 2025, meanwhile, a Disney Imagineer, speaking at South by Southwest, indicated that Fortnite’s Disney experience will have some interactivity with the Disney parks in the real world.

“Imagine … what if you could go to the park and have an experience in Smuggler’s Run [and] go on this amazing mission, but then have that affect or connect your gameplay at home?” said Asa Kalama, head of interactive experiences at Disney.

OK, but what will the game/experience actually be like?

Despite the quotes above, we still don’t know anything really tangible about the moment-to-moment experience of this Fortnite x Disney thing. Yes, they’ve teased certain features, like being able to watch Disney content in-game or buy Disney merch, and leaks indicate the experience will at least partially be set in some sort of digital adaptation of the real-world Disneyland park, and so perhaps you’ll be able to ride those Disney rides in the game. And another leak mentions cinematic cutscenes and story content, so it may have a campaign to play through.

But even though we have this smattering of details about what will be included, we still have no real idea of what the core gameplay will be for this Fortnite x Disney thing. All these details are hints, but they don’t add up to any sort of big picture.

When is Disney x Fortnite coming out?

Considering how vague the details have been so far, there’s no reason to expect this Disney x Fortnite project to release this year, and a recent Wall Street Journal report indicated it might be a while before it all comes together. The report claimed the mode is being held up by the many layers of Disney bureaucracy that have to approve anything Epic does with it. However, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney claimed the report was false and that Disney actually has been much more responsive than they expected.

Regardless of what is and isn’t true with that story, the total lack of tangible info about the mode means there’s no real reason to think that the Disney x Fortnite project is close to completion. Expect a 2026 launch at the earliest, unless Epic has majorly improved its ability to keep secrets recently.

Late last month, players of Nexon’s tactical schoolgirl gacha fest Blue Archive were horrified to discover that their universe had undergone Koyukification. For context, Kurosaki Koyuki is one of Blue Archive’s recruitable characters, a twin-tailed pinkhead known for her immense natural code-breaking skills, her passion for gambling, and her mischievous persona.


On August 31st, Blue Archivists logged onto discover that Koyuki had multiplied like a virus. Cafes and arcades teemed with duplicates of the character. Her snaggle-toothed rictus filled the game’s recruitment banners. The very information page – once a source of guidance and solace to so many – had been edited to read “nihahaha”, in mimicry of the character’s giggle.


It was kind of like this scene from Being John Malkovich, if John Malkovich had been a freakazoid 15-year-old piker armed with a light machinegun. And also, the closing scenes from Matrix Revolutions (Koyuki’s in-game nickname is “White Rabbit”), if Neo and Agent Smith had decided to lay off the kung fu and sample the local parfait.


How to explain these nightmarish events? It was a hack, obviously. As reported by Automaton West, publishers Nexon took Blue Archive offline for a few hours that Sunday to expunge the excess Koyukis and carry out an investigation. Seemingly, this was the good kind of hack, carried out for the glee of it rather than to filch anybody’s credit card details. Or at least, that’s what they’re saying publicly.

According to Nexon’s subsequent notice to players, somebody managed to break into the game’s content delivery network and mess with the environment settings, which are managed separately from the game itself, redirecting them to an IP address in the Netherlands.

The hacker’s changes only “affected the client-side content display”, it seems. Nexon say that “players’ accounts, game data, and payment information were not affected, as they are operated in a separate database and always revalidated by the game server.”


You may find the idea of your online gameworld being suddenly suffused by goblin cryptanalysts amusing. Rest assured that Nexon do not. Aside from introducing new restrictions and countermeasures, they’ve reported the whole ordeal to the Korea Internet & Security Agency. They’ve also prepared a player compensation package of in-game McGuffins to say sorry for the emergency maintenance period. Thoughts and prayers, etc.

Is Blue Archive worth playing post-Koyukification? I can tell you nothing save that this trailer thoroughly weirded me out with its bright and breezy scenes of school life in which everybody present is packing enough firepower to clear out a Terminid nest.

Life is Strange is the latest video game confirmed to be getting a TV adaptation.

As first reported by Variety, Amazon Prime Video has greenlit a live-action Life is Strange show. It’ll be led, produced, and penned by The End of the F***ing World writer, Charlie Covell, alongside Story Kitchen executive producers, Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson.

Square Enix studio heads Jon Brooke and Lee Singleton said, “For years we’ve had so many people asking us to create a Life is Strange TV show, and we’re so pleased to finally partner with Amazon MGM Studios, who we trust will do an incredible job bringing our universe to life.”

The franchise’s most recent release, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, launched amidst a major backlash from fans upset at how the game handled the ongoing storyline of returning protagonist Max Caulfield, and the impact of players’ choice at the beginning of Life is Strange 1.

The situation turned uglier when Square Enix removed leaked development material from a popular Life is Strange fan subreddit, even though commenters provided proof they worked at Deck Nine and claimed Double Exposure’s story changed due to feedback from Square Enix itself. Square Enix said it had acted to remove the content based on “appropriate legal requirements” for “intellectual property violations”.

“Like its own hero’s dabbling with time travel, Life is Strange: Double Exposure highlights the troubles of trying to revisit old memories, while raising unanswered questions about the future,” we wrote in Eurogamer’s Life is Strange: Double Exposure review.

PC Gaming Handhelds Are Getting Ridiculous With $1,100 Legion Go 2

Big Cult of the Lamb DLC and even bigger PC gaming handhelds. Welcome to the latest edition of Morning Checkpoint, Kotaku‘s daily roundup of gaming news and culture. I am still recovering from the Philadelphia Eagles’ narrow escape from the Dallas Cowboys last night. It only took six seconds for star defensive tackle Jalen Carter to get ejected from the game for spitting at opposing quarterback Dak Prescott, only for a second angle to reveal Prescott actually spit first.

Carter apparently then asked him if he just spat at him (Prescott’s loogie had little hang-time before going straight to the ground) and Prescott said something to the effect of “why the hell would I do that?” and then Carter decided the time for words had ended and fired back with his own salvo of saliva aimed squarely at Prescott’s chest. The curse of Madden continues? I can’t wait to suffer through another season of the 2024 Super Bowl champions looking like utter frauds.

The Legion Go 2 is almost twice as expensive as the original

Lenovo revealed its newest PC gaming handheld and its impressive specs are overshadowed only by its price tag. It starts at $1,100 or about the price of a 15-inch MacBook Air. For that you get an 8.8 inch OLED display, an AMD Z2 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. The Verge reports it won’t launch with SteamOS, and it won’t have Microsoft’s new Windows gaming UI that’s releasing with the Xbox ROG Ally either. That option won’t arrive until sometime in spring 2026.

None of this is doing much for my enthusiasm for an otherwise cool upgrade. It’ll be the beefiest portable PC gaming competitor to the Switch 2 when it arrives on October 31, complete with detachable controller grips, a kickstand, and optical mouse controls. But with the best Legion Go 2 model coming in at almost $1,500, I’m not sure any number of new bells and whistles will get prospective buyers over the sticker shock.

Cult of the Lamb‘s Woolhaven DLC will be almost as long as the base game

The action roguelike base-builder has an expansion coming in early 2026 and developer Massive Monster claims it will effectively feel like a second game. The wintery DLC adds new settlement mechanics, levels to explore, and brutal weather to survive. It looks neat but unlike all of the free updates generously showered on players, Woodhaven will be paid. No price has been revealed yet.

“We tend to go all out, be at weddings, to raves, to three free massive content updates,” the devs said in a TikTok. “This DLC is not free, but I promise you’ll love it.”

Schedule 1 fans are voting on whether to finally bring shrooms to the hit Steam game

The drug-selling crewlike‘s Rival Cartels update is live and the next community poll is available for players to vote on. The three options are between Hireable Drivers, Fishing, and Shrooms, a psychedelic not currently available in the game. While drivers would be the most practical, fans of funky fungi have been waiting for their moment in the spotlight. Some players are chanting “Shrooms, baby!” Others say “Fishing EZ.” The weirdos howl “I want police raids so bad.”

MindsEye devs surprise remaining players by actually continuing to fix the game

“I can’t wait for the next statement from the studio (it’s so fucking over),” wrote Electrical_Sugar_742 a couple of days ago. But Build A Rocket Boy responded with update 4, which is full of changes to the beleaguered action shooter. It addresses PC performance issues and adds quality-of-life improvements, including the ability to finally skip cutscenes. How are players responding?

“I’ve deleted it for now,” wrote one. “Maybe by 2040 the game will reach 1.0,” wrote another. The most controversial patch note is “Removed EVERYWHERE vehicles from Build.MindsEye – those vehicles were made accessible unofficially, and we will bring them to MindsEye when they are ready.” User RazorLined wrote, “You guys really thought this was the time to make that change. Really guys. REALLY!?!” Tough crowd.

Repair support for every old Nintendo console before the Switch has officially ended

The Mario maker ran out of replacement parts for the New 2DS XL this week. “Due to the depletion of parts inventory required for repairs, we have terminated the repair service for the New Nintendo 2DS XL console as of September 4, 2025,” a  post on X reads, per X’s built-in translate function. “Repair services for all other Nintendo 3DS series have also been terminated.”

The company ended repair support for the Wii U last year. With both platforms’ eShops also set down and no online functionality left, the sun has finally set on Nintendo’s pre-Switch years.

Tron Movies Land On 4K Blu-Ray For The First Time With Collectible Steelbooks

With Tron: Ares arriving in theaters October 10, now is a great time to revisit The Grid. The new Tron movie is the third one set inside of that video game-inspired digital universe, and for the first time ever, you can watch the first two on 4K Blu-ray. Collectible Steelbook Editions of Tron and Tron: Legacy are available to preorder for $40 each at Amazon. Walmart was taking preorders earlier this week, but both films sold out within hours. You won’t have to wait long to get your preorders either, as both Tron movies release September 16.

$40 | Releases September 16

The first Tron movie was released in 1982, and it was a revolutionary film as it pioneered new special effects and revolutionary computer-generated imagery for the time. The restoration of Tron was handled by The Walt Disney Film Restoration team, who corrected dirt, warping, and other imperfections to ensure pristine image quality, after digitally scanning the film for this 4K releases. The project was also supervised by Steven Lisberger, the writer-director of Tron.

The steelbook cover is also fantastic for this release, as it features a combination of film imagery and new art of the movie’s cast. On the inside, you can also find a screenshot of the infamous lightcycle race scene from Tron, that was designed using bleeding-edge computer technology at the time. It might look quaint now, but in 1982, footage like this had never been seen or attempted before. The film also supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio, and the 4K disc is accompanied by a standard Blu-ray disc copy of the film and a digital streaming code for it.

For the bonus materials, this Tron release has inherited all the extras from the previous Blu-ray release. There’s nothing new here, but all of the legacy content from the older Tron release did provide an exhaustive glimpse behind the curtain to see just how this technological marvel pushed filmmaking to the limit in the ’80s. You can look forward to an audio commentary track with Lisberger and several crew members, featurettes, photo galleries, and promotional materials. The Making of Tron is especially good, as this is an 88-minute documentary covering the challenging development of the film.

Released in 2010, Tron Legacy was directed by Joseph Kosinski and it used advances in special effects technology to build a version of the Grid that truly felt like a digital frontier. This version of the movie has been remastered in High Dynamic Range from the original digital sources under the supervision of Kosinski, and it also includes Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos audio options. Like Tron, you’re also getting standard Blu-ray and digital streaming code copies of the film alongside the 4K disc. The steelbook cover is also eye-catching, as it’s a collage of characters and technology on the front and the rear, while the inside shows off a scene from the movie’s evolved lightcycle race.

This edition also contains the legacy bonus features from the previous Blu-ray release, but again, these provide an incredibly detailed look behind the scenes of Tron: Legacy. Not only do you get a selection of documentaries and featurettes, but there’s even a music video from the film’s composers, award-winning duo Daft Punk. Sadly, there’s no director’s commentary audio track, but this is a pretty good collection of extras overall.

If you’ve never watched the series, the Tron movies are set primarily in a digital world known as the Grid. The first film starred Jeff Bridges as a brilliant video game developer who is beamed into the Grid after hacking the mainframe computer of his ex-employer, and he finds that this dangerous world is part of the very game he was designing. Tron: Legacy arrived 28 years later, and it saw Flynn’s son transported to the Grid, which was now under the control of sinister forces.

Tron 4k Steelbook Blu-ray

After the release of Tron Legacy, an interquel animated series was released in the form of Tron: Uprising. The show revolved around a young program named Beck, who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution against the corrupt regime led by the villainous Clu and his evil henchman, General Tesler. The show featured incredible animation and mature storytelling, and while it isn’t available in a collected form on DVD or Blu-ray anymore, you can stream it on Prime Video or Disney Plus.

Tron: Legacy 4K Steelbook Blu-ray

Meanwhile, Tron: Ares is scheduled to be released on October 10. The film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson, and it follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission.

There are a lot of exciting 4K Blu-ray releases on the horizon. On September 9, Ballerina From the World of John Wick and Jurassic World Rebirth arrive. In October, Shin Godzilla and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will be available with Steelbook Editions of their own. And for a video game-inspired movie based on an actual video game, the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie is getting a new 4K Steelbook Edition. It was supposed to release right before the new movie, but Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema just delayed Mortal Kombat 2 to Summer 2026.

Team Cherry working on “quality issues” with Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Simplified Chinese translation, following mixed Steam reviews

Hollow Knight: Silksong developers Team Cherry are “working to improve” the game’s Simplified Chinese translation, following “quality issues” which have seen its Steam user reviews from those speaking the language drop to “mixed”.

As you can easily see thanks to Steam’s recent introduction of language-specific review splits, the mixed reviews are unique to the 6,382 people who’ve left verdicts in Simplified Chinese so far. For every other language, including Traditional Chinese, the impressions being left are either mostly or overwhelmingly positive, though it’s worth noting that a sizeable number are more shows of support for Team Cherry than proper reviews, being based on less than an hour’s playtime.

Team Cherry have clearly spotted this, with the studio’s marketing and publishing director Matthew ‘Leth’ Griffin having posted a message to Chinese-speaking Skongers. “We appreciate you letting us know about quality issues with the current Simplified Chinese translation of Hollow Knight: Silksong,” he tweeted. “We’ll be working to improve the translation over the coming weeks. Thanks for your feedback and support.”

Issues with this translation of metroidvania were flagged online as early as its recent Gamescom demo in late August, with one user describing it as “terrible” and adding “if there are no changes in the official version, I am afraid there is a risk of bad reviews”.

Another user in that thread added: “If the demo’s text reflects what we’ll see in the final release, I must say the translation style in the demo differs greatly from the first game. Many lines feel unnatural, and some are even quite awkward or confusing in Chinese.”

According to our Guides Writer Jeremy, who’s half-Chinese and categorises his knowledge of the language as moderate with speaking fluency, the unnaturalness of the translation appears to stem from the use of classical grammar, a bit like an English translation which uses words like ‘thee’ and ‘thou’. Shakespearean Skong. Sounds like it could be a fun time, were you not just trying to lose yourself in a game you’ve waited ages for.

Wherefore art thou, Eric Barone cameo?

Here’s hoping Team Cherry’s planned translantion tweaks do let Chinese players enjoy jumping about as Hornet as much as many other Steam reviewers appear to be, without being subjected to bardly prose.

Yes, yes, I’m sure Silksong will be wonderful as soon as I’m awake enough to make any meaningful progress, but for now, No Man’s Sky continues to hold me in its grip. Partly, that’s because its recent ship-building update continues to be utterly captivating (even if my creations are still nowhere near as good as this lot), but also because the excavation grind required to amass a good mix of customisation components is exactly the right kind of monotonous for those evenings when you just want to look at something pretty and disengage your brain.

As is fairly typical though, given No Man’s Sky’s absolute heap of distractions, things have taken a bit of an unanticipated turn. Instead of digging up ship bits, I’ve suddenly become obsessed with the palaeontology system I’d largely ignored when it was introduced earlier this year – and I’m now determinedly whizzing around planets unearthing prehistoric bones to add to my increasingly unwieldy collection. The brilliant bit is that acquired fossils can be assembled onto plinths, as your whims take you, meaning you can build an entire museum of strange and exotic creature exhibits to show off to your friends. And if you’ve ever wondered what it is about No Man’s Sky that scratches a particular itch for certain people, it can probably be found somewhere in the fact I’m now seriously considering building a travelling exhibition ship I can take on a cosmic tour.

Untitled Goose Game, Switch 2

Picture this: it’s raining, it’s dark outside, and it’s getting chillier, and you’re snuggled down in a blanket while causing havoc as a mischievous goose with no remorse.

Untitled Goose Game is a game I return to periodically simply because it makes me smile. That’s it – I can’t think of a deeper reason other than it brings me sheer, unrestricted joy. Being an agent of chaos, who’s ticking off a checklist of chaos, is a great use of a gloomy night.

Which is your favourite Soulsborne game? Bloodborne is certainly up there for me, which is why I decided to get the platinum trophy. This may have been an error. Where Elden Ring’s NG+ felt like a victory run that I whipped through in a few hours, Bloodborne’s equivalent is far less of the speedrun I was hoping for. I’ve found it quite frustrating, though that’s more my own impatience than anything else. Still, I’ve been dipping into that notorious Chalice Dungeon for a blood boost. You know the one – I can’t publish the name here.

Herdlings, PC

Yes, yes, I have been playing Silksong, but earlier in the week I was playing something else: Herdlings. And I’m glad I did. I’m glad I did because I’m glad games like this exist. Arty, seemingly ungamelike experiences – in that they aren’t designed around catchy gameplay loops – that are more about evoking a feeling rather than occupying your hands.

It’s a super cute and beautiful game – a game about herding strange furry animals out of a city, into the wilderness and up a mountain. But one thought stayed with me especially, and it’s to do with the mental handshake there is between your imagination and a game when you play. If a game gives you a lot of information – if a lot is declared – then your imagination doesn’t have to come out very far to meet it. But if a game withholds a lot of detail, it encourages you to mentally reach out. And Herdlings does this.

There are no words, there’s no overt direction, nor are there any detailed customisation mechanics around managing your beasts. You can name them and clean them and pet them, and feed them, but these are one-button-press kind of things, with no associated gauges to fill. Mostly, these animals, they’re just there – you don’t know what they’re thinking or what they are. So you imagine it. You imagine personalities and stories for them – reasons why you found them in the way you did. Your imagination leaps forward. And together – you and the game – write a story.

It’s, gently, very powerful stuff.

I’m Skonged up to my gills at the moment and will remain with Hornet on the brain until I hit credits or die, or both. The game seems pretty darn good so far – I’ve knocked down plenty of bosses and am currently at that phase where you go back through prior zones and clear out every nook and cranny. Having just got my wall jump, I’ve discovered fresh horrors to throw myself against. Yay!

Agatha Christie – Murder on the Orient Express, Switch 2

In anticipation of Silksong, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s DLC, I have been hesitant to start another ‘big game’. Instead I have been dipping into various demos on Switch 2. Most recently I tried the demo for Agatha Christie – Murder on the Orient Express, from Microids Studio Lyon. I’ve always been partial to a murder mystery, and I still enjoy Christie’s books and the David Suchet adaptations that pop up on ITV3 from time to time. So how about playing through one of her most iconic stories?

This was only a demo so I can’t speak for the full game, but it actually wasn’t too bad (I won’t lie: I am surprised to be saying this – I went in with very low expectations). It is a bit boring – the puzzles in the demo were easy to the point where I don’t think you can call them puzzles at all. But visually it was a nice representation of the Orient Express, which I went on for my honeymoon, by the way, so I have fond memories. I’m pleased to say no one was killed when I was on board.

Will I play the full game? No, probably not. But thanks to a warm feeling of nostalgia, Agatha Christie – Murder on the Orient Express was a pleasant enough way to spend an evening.

More easy-breazy (read: low effort) stuff from me during another busy week where personal time for gaming’s at a minimum. At the moment I’m running a save called “Amorim’s United but good”, where I restrict myself to the beleaguered Ruben Amorim’s formation, play through a scenario as close to last season as possible (thanks to a few community data mods) but treat the transfer windows and finer points of tactics within the 3-4-2-1 formation as my own. And I’m not saying I’m a genius or anything but we’re seven points clear at the top, with 10 games to go. Call me, Sir Jim. Call me.

Hollow Knight Silksong, Xbox

Yes, it’s only been out since Thursday PM, but that night alone I sunk about seven hours into Silksong. It’s a very me game. I love Metroidvanias (and I’m of the controversial opinion that most modern ones are better than the originals – sorry Konami and Nintendo!) and this new Team Cherry effort is so up my street it’s absurd. The musical direction – both aurally and in the fact the whole world seems designed around bells and sound – speaks to me on a level a lot of games fail to. I really hope the next few days of play are as magical as these opening hours.

Fantasy Football, real life!

I was once at a World of Tanks event in Russia where the online behemoth announced Dolph Lundgren, Swedish action star, as the new face of its marketing campaign. Even pushing 60, Lundgren was an imposing figure. You can see how he killed Apollo Creed. In an excruciating press conference, one excited fan stood up and asked him if he played The Sims. He didn’t know what The Sims was, so an even more painful 60 seconds passed as it was explained to him what The Sims was. In a very Ivan Drago drawl, Dolph replied, monotone: “I prefer real life.”

Anyway, in the vein of Dolph, it’d be wrong to not acknowledge that the primary thing I’ve been playing over the last week involves no traditional gaming – NFL Fantasy Football. Last week that took the form of our fantasy draft, and this week is the start of the actual season where the real game begins, and I’ll spend Saturday fretting about my team and Sunday evening watching their performance. With all its stats and numbers, playing NFL Fantasy genuinely reminds me of some of my favourite role-playing games – it’s a numbers game, in the end. That’s probably why it appeals so much to my RPG–pilled brain.

Pete Hines Says Game Pass Worth ‘Jack S***’ Without The People Who Make It

Bethesda’s former VP of publishing, Pete Hines, still sounds skeptical of Game Pass. Nearly two years after leaving the Fallout and Elder Scrolls maker, the veteran video game marketer shared his concerns about subscription gaming’s long-term impact on the industry. “You need to properly acknowledge, compensate, and recognize what it takes to create that content and not just make a game, but make a product,” he said in a new interview with DBLTap.

Hines had worked at Bethesda for over two decades when it was acquired by Microsoft in 2021 for over $7 billion. While the relationship seemed like a natural fit following a long history of closely working together, going back to the days of porting Morrowind to Xbox, there were clear cracks as Microsoft’s gaming strategy evolved following the launch of the Xbox Series X/S.

Internal communications revealed during the FTC trial over the tech giant’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard suggested Hines in particular was frustrated with a mandate that Bethesda stop bringing its games to rival platform PlayStation 5. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was multiplatform before becoming an Xbox exclusive, only for it to go multiplatform again when Microsoft pivoted in the years after Hines retired.

While the former exec doesn’t touch on that messy 180 in the new interview, he does address concerns about subscription gaming and especially how servicing something like Game Pass drives incentives within a massive publishing organization like Xbox. Earlier this summer, Microsoft’s gaming division was hit with more mass layoffs, including the cancellation of an internally well-regarded loot shooter project called Blackbird that was being developed at the Bethesda-adjacent ZeniMax Online.

I’m involved enough to know I saw what I considered to be some short sighted decision making several years ago, and it seems to be bearing out the way I said. Subscriptions have become the new four letter word, right? You can’t buy a product anymore. When you talk about a subscription that relies on content, if you don’t figure out how to balance the needs of the service and the people running the service with the people who are providing the content – without which your subscription is worth jack shit – then you have a real problem. You need to properly acknowledge, compensate and recognize what it takes to create that content and not just make a game, but make a product. That tension is hurting a lot of people, including the content creators themselves, because they’re fitting into an ecosystem that is not properly valuing and rewarding what they’re making.

A big topic recently has been whether Microsoft’s first-party game studios are compatible with Game Pass. The company says Game Pass is profitable and that it takes into account lost sales from games being available for free to paying subscribers. But it’s still unclear how the development costs for those games are captured within the company and what the new metrics are for success. Does total minutes of your game played matter more than total sales? Would studios like Hi-Fi Rush maker Tango Gameworks still have been shuttered if that were the case?

However the current system works, Hines seems concerned it’s not “properly valuing and rewarding” what developers at the company are making. And that’s before getting into questions about recent mass layoffs, their impact on morale, and institutional brain drain when senior people disappear from an organization. But it’s also unclear how much the Game Pass question will ultimately matter in the long run.

Subscriber numbers appear to have hit a ceiling and Microsoft is now selling games on PS5, a marketplace much closer to the product-oriented one Hines says teams like those inside Bethesda were originally designed for. At the rate Microsoft keeps pivoting, it’s hard to know where things will go next.

Humble has brought back one of the most popular game bundles from last year as part of its Best of Humble Bundle series. From now until September 24, you can get 17 Lego video games for only $15. Many of the biggest franchises from Traveller’s Tales extensive catalog of licensed games are included in the lineup: Star Wars, Batman, Marvel, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, Jurassic World, and more. All told, Lego Worlds Collide 2025 is valued at $499, while the 2024 version was worth $419.

All 17 games in the bundle will be instantly added to your Humble account as Steam keys, and the vast majority run wonderfully on Steam Deck. Most of the games have split-screen cooperative modes and are great adventures for parents to play with kids.

Part of the proceeds from your $15 (or more) donation go toward Raiden Science Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to finding a cure for the genetic disorder UBA5 and other rare diseases that affect children.

Step up to the $10 tier to add Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, The Lord of the Rings, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and Marvel’s Avengers Deluxe Edition.

The Lego Worlds Collide 2025 bundle does have a couple of minor differences compared to last year’s iteration. This time around, you also get Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’s Deluxe Edition, whereas last year the bundle included a coupon to get the game for 85% off. Additionally, the two Lego Harry Potter games are noticeably absent, dropping the total number of titles from 18 to 17. But you’re getting extra content elsewhere: Four of the games that were standard editions last year are now Deluxe/Premium Editions that include season passes with additional content.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

The headliner is The Skywalker Saga, the newest game in Traveller’s Tales series. The Skywalker Saga broke from the familiar mold by offering large, open-world environments, an overhauled combat system, and a modern third-person camera angle.

The Skywalker Saga was the biggest and most ambitious Lego game yet when it launched in 2022–though we’ll see if that changes when Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight releases in 2026. And what we’ve seen and played so far has been quite promising. With that in mind, now’s a pretty good time to revisit the first three Lego Batman games, all of which are included in Lego Worlds Collide 2025.
