Fortnite Has A Rare Double XP Weekend And Brings Back A Fan-Favorite Weapon

by admin September 7, 2025

XP has been a regular topic of conversation among Fortnite players during Chapter 6 Season 4, as Epic Games has apparently slashed how quickly most folks will level up just by playing normally. Since this season is a month longer than last season was, it’s not a particularly surprising change. Fortunately, Fortnite is easing the burden a bit by offering double XP all weekend. The boost will last until Monday, September 8 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET.

Double XP weekends aren’t a very common thing in Fortnite. Typically, when Epic wants to help players gain XP faster, it adds limited-time event quests with simple objectives that are easy to complete in Battle Royale, Reload, or whatever other mode the company wants to promote. Fortnite’s most recent double XP weekend event like this one happened back in March.

The double XP is only one of the things Epic changed for this weekend. Blitz Royale is having a Golden Llamageddon event, where the map will be filled with special gold llama pinatas full of top-tier loot. And in Battle Royale, they’ve unvaulted several old weapons, including the grapple glove, the Boom Bow, the original pump shotgun, and the beloved Holo Twister rifle that was everybody’s favorite gun during the first two seasons of Chapter 6.

The Holo Twister assault rifle is back in Battle Royale this weekend.

And over in Fortnite OG, the path is diverging from how it went in Chapter 1 Season 5 the first time, with the giant purple cube Kevin from back in the day being replaced by the giant red cube Revin.

All these shenanigans are likely to come to an end at the same time double XP does on Monday, so there’s only a limited amount of time to take part before things go back to normal.

Starfield marks two year anniversary with a secret message

by admin September 7, 2025

Bethesda has hidden a secret message in a social media post ostensibly marking Starfield’s second anniversary.

It’s only 12 seconds long, and starts pretty much as you’d expect, but halfway through the video teaser, the music and visuals are interrupted, the black/blue palette is replaced by yellow and brown, and we see snippets of black text and a secret message.

Starfield is packed full of Easter Eggs, if you didn’t know.Watch on YouTube

Thanks to some keen-eyed Starfield fans, somebody’s already pieced together the clues and shared that message with us: “Terran Armada”.

While we don’t yet know what Terran Armada is, let alone when it’ll release, fans are positing it’s possibly the name of the next DLC or expansion, and are already sharing on the Starfield subreddit what’s top of their wishlist.

DLC2 is titled “Terran Armada”.

“Yeah, this is interesting because ‘Terran’ when used in the correct context can only mean ‘of Terra’ or ‘from earth’,” suggested one player. “Looks like our planet might be more than it seems in Starfeild. With the rumors of a Starborn DLC or update I wonder if a bunch of Starborn resettled the earth in secret or something?”

“I’m just happy to have something to speculate and theorize on again since that has been one of the most fun parts of gaming releases since [I] was a kid,” said someone else.

Hopefully, Bethesda won’t leave us hanging for long and will confirm what’s coming sooner rather than later – we’ll keep you posted.

Last month, Bethesda teased an upcoming update for Starfield would improve space travel following a datamine that discovered hints of an overhauled “cruise mode”. After a hasty patch removed hints of the cruise mode from the files, Bethesda has since come forward with its hands up and admitted that yes, cruise mode is real and is on the way somewhat soon.

Now Playing: Borderlands 4 | Official Launch Week Trailer

Borderlands 4 will cost $70 when it launches, which is notable because there was a period of time when Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford claimed he did not know the price, prompting fears that it could be $80. Pitchford stoked the conversation around pricing by saying “real fans” would find a way to come up with $80 if that was the case.

Pitchford is so confident in Borderlands 4’s pricing strategy that he recently said he believes the game would be “worth it” at five times the price of entry.

While the standard edition is priced at $70, 2K and Gearbox are offering multiple more expensive editions of the game, including a $100 deluxe edition, a $130 super deluxe edition, and a $150 collector’s edition. For more, be sure to consult GameSpot’s Borderlands 4 preorder guide to find the version that’s right for you.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game Physical Edition Is Now Available At Amazon

by admin September 7, 2025

The Witcher fans can now play Gwent with real cards thanks to the official physical adaptation. Revealed last December, Gwent: The Legendary Card Game starts shipping this month, and Amazon is now taking orders for $45. The complete set features five factions, over 400 cards with new artwork, and six game modes for 1-5 players.

Gwent: The Legendary Card Game was designed by No Loading Games and published by Hachette Boardgames. Amazon’s store page for Gwent just popped up this month. Though not marked as a preorder, the delivery estimate of three to four weeks suggests Amazon still needs a few weeks to get its inventory situation sorted. Gwent is sold by the game’s publisher but will ship from Amazon for free.

$45 | Supports 1-5 Players

Unlike many card games–including the digital version of Gwent–this is a one-off release. No Loading has no plans to release expansions or booster packs, which is why it’s advertised as the “complete set.”

Gwent’s physical edition has five factions: Northern Realms, Scoia’tael, Monsters, Skellige, and Nilfgaard. Players can build their faction decks from a pool of 436 cards, each of which has new artwork inspired by CD Projekt Red’s hit series.

Along with an impressive number of cards to pick from when building your deck, you can play six different variants of Gwent with the physical edition. Newcomers can use pre-built decks to learn the ropes in Initiation Mode. Four players can split into teams for 2v2 matches. Three to five players can battle in Free-for-All. If you want to test the deck you built or don’t have anyone to battle, Solo Challenge Mode is a single-player variant.

Advanced Mode and Tournament Format utilize Gwent’s conventional 1v1 set. Advanced Mode tasks you with making your deck from scratch, and Tournament Format uses Gwent’s traditional competition rules. A typical round of Gwent is around takes 20 minutes.

What’s in the box?

  • 436 Faction Cards (5 Factions)
  • 10 Aid Cards
  • 4 Tokens
  • 4 Gem Tokens
  • Score Tracking Board
  • Paper Game Board
  • 2 Rulebooks

Gwent has been playable as a digital card game for a decade at this point. It first appeared as a minigame in The Witcher 3. The minigame’s immense popularity led CD Projekt Red to release a standalone version in 2018. Though official support ended in October 2023, Gwent remains playable today on consoles, PC, and mobile devices. Additionally, the Gwent community is keeping the digital version fresh with fan-made content updates and mods.

Gwent has technically been available in physical format before. Decks of cards were offered for a limited time to support the launch of The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine. That said, the new retail edition includes the first full set of Gwent cards.

The Witcher Board Games

The Witcher video game series has served as the inspiration for multiple board games over the past few years, including the competitive strategy game called Old World. More recently, The Witcher joined the strategy fighting game series Unmatched.

The card game isn’t the only exciting release for The Witcher franchise this month. The ninth novel in Andrzej Sapkowski’s original book series will be published in English on September 30. The Witcher: Crossroads of Ravens is a prequel novel that explores Geralt’s backstory before he became the character we know today. You can preorder a hardcover copy of Crossroads of Ravens for $23.49 (was $30) at Amazon.

Just like the mainline games, Gwent was inspired by a game mentioned in Sapkowski’s novels called Gwint. If you haven’t read Sapkowski’s other Witcher novels and story collections, you can get the first seven by purchasing the two box sets below:

The games industry has a Soulslike problem, but probably not the one you think

by admin September 7, 2025

Back in 1993, a little-known game called Doom came out. It wasn’t the first game to offer shooting in first-person, but it did popularise the genre. The games that followed became known as Doom-clones (often because they used the same engine), and it wasn’t until the likes of GoldenEye, Half-Life, Halo, and more developed the genre further in the late 90s that the more neutral term first-person shooter was more widely used.

I feel we’re facing a similar situation with Soulslikes. After the huge success FromSoftware found with its Dark Souls games, the term has been used for games imitating the studio’s design. Yet fatigue is now setting in and the term is becoming redundant.

Take gamescom Opening Night Live. A load of (assumed) Soulslikes were announced, from a sequel to Lords of the Fallen, to the Napoleonic Soulslike Valor Mortis. But for most of these games, are they really Soulslikes? Or are they just third-person action-RPGs that have been conflated with FromSoftware’s works as a lazy shorthand to garner attention?

Because what, really, is a Soulslike? Is it a third-person combat game with a stamina gauge? Is it a game where you lose your currency upon death? Is it a game with looping level design? Hidden lore? Or an action game that’s just really hard?

I’d argue a game needs to have all the above to truly be considered a Soulslike. Yet the problem here is the term constantly invites comparison back to FromSoftware’s very specific work. And it’s hard to compete with the originators of the genre. Heck, even FromSoftware itself has challenged the design philosophy of Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki with subsequent entries, from Bloodborne to Sekiro to Nightreign.

If a studio adheres too closely to the Dark Souls formula, then it’s a Soulslike – but a particularly derivative one. That results in copycat games that don’t move the genre on meaningfully, featuring dark fantasy aesthetics, challenging combat, and little else. Yet there remain a handful of Soulslike games that do push the boundaries, finding their own unique aesthetics or combat rhythm. Lies of P, for instance, plays with its Pinocchio adaptation for its grim visual designs, while more recently Wuchang: Fallen Feathers finds a new rhythm to combat with its multiple systems – not to mention a fun twist on dying.

But what’s most frustrating about the term Soulslike is the way it’s used to describe almost anything as an up-front assumption before really playing. When it was first revealed in 2020, Black Myth Wukong was just assumed to be a Soulslike, until we finally went hands-on to find it had few of the genre’s typical trappings. And every time Phantom Blade Zero is shown, its director “Soulframe” Liang has had to insist once again that it’s not a Soulslike.

Eating sugar? Telling lies!? | Image credit: Neowiz

As for ONL in August, it’s safe to assume Lords of the Fallen 2 will fit the mould, while Valor Mortis is self-described as a first-person Soulslike – perhaps that shift in perspective will be enough to differentiate itself from the pack. But will the likes of Swords of Legends or La Divina Commedia really be Soulslikes? Or are they just third-person action RPGs?

The latest victim of the Soulslike misnomer is Silent Hill f. Where the remake of Silent Hill 2 included over-the-shoulder gun combat, this new game in the series instead focuses on melee combat. Does that make it a Soulslike? No, it doesn’t. And yet the Silent Hill fandom became split on this new seemingly Soulslike combat, to the point the game’s producer has had to step in and call those comparisons “disingenuous”.

“This is one of the things that we see – the term Soulslike – being thrown around on the internet quite a bit,” producer Motoi Okamoto told IGN in an interview. “And I think it’s a label that’s a little bit disingenuous. Modern players will see like, oh there’s a stamina meter, there’s a dodge, and they’re like, ‘Okay, it’s a Soulslike’.

“But to be very honest, a lot of these things we actually pulled from classic Silent Hill titles. Look at Silent Hill 4 – there’s a charge meter for your attacks, kind of like our Focus meter. And even for Silent Hill 3 there’s a stamina meter. You see it later on.”

See – Okamoto gets it!

In Silent Hill f, the ‘f’ stands for ‘f**ked up’ (it doesn’t). | Image credit: Konami

You could make a similar point with the term Metroidvania, of course, or even Roguelikes. Yet Rogue was released so many decades ago that few nowadays remember it (in comparison to Dark Souls, at least), while I’ve increasingly seen the term Search Action used for Metroidvanias, which is a translation of the Japanese equivalent label. Is it time we come up with something new for Soulslike? Or is it enough to call those games action-RPGs?

Another element to this is the prevalence of these games coming from Chinese studios. I’ve written about this extensively, particularly how Black Myth Wukong’s success has paved the way for other studios to follow. The industry has shifted from mobile games to PC and console games and as Liang told me, action-RPGs are ideal to exemplify that shift. “What’s most attractive is obviously the performance of console games compared to mobile games, the fancy graphics and controls, and also the way the game tells the story,” he said. “All of these are the features that will be best presented in an action-RPG.”

What’s more, studios in China (and Korea too) are seeking a global audience for their games outside of domestic players. Likening their games to previous hits – Dark Souls, Wukong – is a surefire shorthand to gain attention, but it’s causing fatigue within the genre and turning Soulslike into a meaningless term.

Still, there’s hope. After announcing Black Myth Zhong Kui as a new game in the series, Game Science CEO Feng Ji took to Weibo (as shared on reddit) to explain why the studio chose to create a new game, stating the studio wanted to create something new and experiment boldly. He even quoted Nintendo’s late-president Satoru Iwata: “There is no future in merely extending what already exists.”

Tiger, tiger, burning bright. | Image credit: Game Science

I’m hopeful, then, we will soon see developers follow suit and break free from the chains of genre convention. And I hope, likewise, we’ll see players stop referring to so many games as Soulslikes. Labelling is human nature and has its uses, but it’s time to appreciate games for their differences without comparing back to a narrow definition of a singular body of work.

Get NBA 2K26 Free With The New PS5 Slim Console Bundle

by admin September 7, 2025

A new PS5 Slim bundle with NBA 2K26 is available now at Amazon, Walmart, PlayStation Direct, and other retailers. Priced at $550, the bundle includes the PS5 Slim with a disc drive and a voucher for the digital version of NBA 2K26. If the price sounds high, it’s because PlayStation raised the price of PS5 consoles on August 21. The PS5 Slim on its own now goes for $550, so the bundle throws in 2K’s brand-new basketball sim for free.

Even with the increases in mind, there’s another reason why this could sound pricey: PlayStation’s last couple of console bundles–Astro Bot and Black Ops 6–included a game and a $50 discount. Earlier this year, the Astro Bot and Black Ops 6 PS5 Slim Bundles were selling for only $450. Those two offers were also available with the PS5 Slim Digital for $400.

Last year’s NBA 2K25 PS5 Slim Bundle had the disc-based and digital-only consoles as options, but it appears PlayStation is moving away from that release structure.

$550 | Valued at $620

The PS5 Slim NBA 2K26 Bundle comes with the following:

  • PS5 Slim (with Disc Drive)
  • DualSense Controller (white)
  • Power cable
  • USB-C charging cable
  • HDMI cable
  • NBA 2K26 standard edition (digital)

Note: The Vertical Stand shown in the picture above isn’t included. PlayStation’s official Vertical Stand is sold separately for $30.

Before you buy the NBA 2K26 console bundle, you should check out the upcoming Ghost of Yotei Limited Edition PS5 Slim Bundle. Preorders for two different models opened September 4. PlayStation Direct has an exclusive bundle that includes a white PS5 Slim with black artwork on the console and DualSense. A version with the same artwork in gold is available at PlayStation Direct and major retailers. Both bundles cost $600 and include a digital copy of Ghost of Yotei. The DualSense Controllers are also sold separately for $85 each. Console Covers for PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro are up for grabs for $65 exclusively at PS Direct. Check out the artwork below:

Ghost of Yotei Limited Edition PS5 Hardware

PlayStation Direct Exclusives:

Available at PS Direct & Major Retailers:

  • PS5 Slim Gold Bundle — $600
  • DualSense Gold Controller — $85

The Ghost of Yotei Limited Edition Collection launches October 2 alongside the game. Check out our preorder guide to learn more about the hardware and editions of the game.

If you opt for the Ghost of Yotei Limited Edition Bundle but still want a copy of NBA 2K26, check out your options below. NBA 2K26 released September 5 alongside the new bundle.

Lord Of The Rings Magic: The Gathering Commander Decks Restocked At Amazon

by admin September 7, 2025

Magic: The Gathering’s Lord of the Rings set is back in stock at Amazon. The retailer has Tales of Middle-earth Commander Decks for huge discounts compared to launch prices. The LOTR Commander Decks sold for $70 when the crossover set launched in June 2023, but Amazon is selling them for around $50 each. And if you’re also interested in the recently released Final Fantasy set, Amazon has the Final Fantasy Commander Deck Bundle for $175 (was $280), a new all-time low.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Commander Decks:

The first three Commander Decks in the list above are shipped and sold by Amazon. Unfortunately, the fourth is currently sold out, but Amazon briefly had it in stock a couple weeks ago, so it’s worth checking the link just in case. Also, while Amazon normally doesn’t accept returns for trading cards, Riders of Rohan is listed as eligible for free returns.

Each Commander Deck comes with 100 Lord of the Rings-themed cards, including 20 unique cards you won’t find in any other Lord of the Rings MTG product. Commander Decks also include a foil-etched display card of the Commander on the box and a Collector Booster Sample Pack with two cards: one rare or higher Traditional Foil or special treatment card and one Traditional Foil special treatment common or uncommon card. You’ll also get the following accessories: deck box, 10 double-sided tokens, Helper card, Life Wheel, strategy insert, and reference card.

Tales of Middle-earth and other Lord of the Rings MTG cards are often only available via third-party resellers. This means prices tend to jump around quite a bit. While it’s not uncommon to find Scene Boxes for reasonable prices, Commander Decks can be a different story.

More MTG Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Items:

Magic: The Gathering – The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Scene Box

Tales of Middle-earth Scene Boxes are available for $39-$45 at Amazon. They are shipped by Amazon but are sold by resellers. The Scene Boxes launched with $41 price tags, so you won’t be overpaying if you pick one up. Each Scene Box includes: 6 Traditional Foil Borderless Scene Cards, 6 Art Cards, 3 Set Boosters, and a paper easel display.

2025 Magic: The Gathering Crossover Sets

Magic: The Gathering 2025 crossover sets

Check stock at Amazon:

It’s already been a massive year for crossover sets in Magic: The Gathering. The Final Fantasy set became the best-selling set in MTG history before its June release. Many Final Fantasy MTG products remain difficult to find for normal prices, but you can get Commander Decks and the Starter Kit. Marvel superhero Spider-Man slings into the MTG universe on September 26. Like with Final Fantasy, preorders have mostly been sold out for months, but Amazon recently restocked the Spider-Man Play Booster Box. Puzzle Quest Remaster Is Being Delisted Because It’s Being Remastered Again

by admin September 7, 2025

For a game that’s been out for 18 years, Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords has had a lot of staying power, especially after the 2019 remaster, Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns. However, The Legend Returns is going to be delisted soon because Puzzle Quest is getting yet another remaster.

The new version of the game is called Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition, and it’s coming to Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC on September 18. Infinity Plus One developed the remaster, which will include the Revenge of the Plague Lord and Challenge of the Warlords expansions.

The Immortal Edition will arrive with improved gameplay, 4K artwork, over 40 new items, and an exclusive player character class. It’s also going to feature the Attack of the Golem Lord expansion that was created for The Legend Continues.

According to Nintendo’s eShop listing, Puzzle Quest: The Legend Returns will remain up until September 19. Players who already purchased the game will still be able to play it, but there will be no further updates. The Legend Returns owners will also be offered an exclusive discount for Puzzle Quest: Immortal Edition. However, pricing details for the new incarnation of the game have yet to be officially disclosed.

Astro Bot Is Becoming The Game Of A Generation

by admin September 7, 2025

Astro Bot is celebrating its 1-year anniversary today, September 6, 2025. Below, we reflect on what the plucky robot has come to represent for some burgeoning gamers.

More than 30 years ago, I fell in love. I was visiting extended family with my parents and two siblings, and the object of my affection was a boxy gray-and-black video game console hooked up to an equally boxy CRT television. I had seen video games before in arcades, and had played some rudimentary Mac games on our family computer. But Super Mario Bros. was something else entirely. The simple but flexible controls, the stage variety, the music. By the time we left my aunt’s house, we three children were staging a coordinated influence campaign to convince our parents to buy our own Nintendo Entertainment System, eager to play more Mario. The rest is history.

My story isn’t unique. Lots of children of the 1980s have similar origins for their gaming obsession. But now, decades later, as a parent myself, I’m struck by how Astro Bot has enraptured my own kids in ways that remind me of my experience with Mario. Years in the future, it will almost certainly be Astro that they credit with first igniting their love of games.

In my particular case, my experience with Mario all those years ago had a massive impact on the trajectory of my life. It affected not only my hobby and interests and circle of friends, but also my career. It’s hard to imagine that I would have gone into writing about games professionally without catching the bug from an early age. I don’t particularly think my own kids will become games critics, but it’s a testament to how important these early experiences can be, and how they can manifest in unexpected ways.

Just before the release of Astro Bot, I visited Team Asobi in Tokyo for an extended hands-on. It was a normal-enough studio visit, but I could sense an infectious energy around this game in particular. This was shaping up to be something special, and I think Asobi knew it. In interviews, game director Nicolas Doucet talked about how important it was to make this game appealing and approachable for younger gamers. Astro is a robot with a relatively simple character design, intentionally kept simple enough so that kids would be able to draw themselves. The character communicates wordlessly with expressions and sounds so that even kids who haven’t yet learned to read will understand the story. The platforming stages are made to be tough enough to present a nice difficulty ramp for younger or novice players, with optional challenge stages for older and more experienced players.

“I remember the first few video games that I played, and because of how greatly they were designed, they stayed with me for my whole life,” Doucet said. “And both of these are really important, I think. When we make something like a platformer, we have to be able to cater for both. So we’ve been building not only the game, but the culture of the team, always around that principle.”

While Doucet didn’t mention Mario specifically during the studio visit, the inspiration was clearly there. The studio set out to make a game that would feel great and have staying power.

They succeeded. A year later, Astro Bot is still one of the most-played video games in my house. My youngest, who can’t read yet, usually calls it “the wobot game,” but has started to know the character as Astro. The levels are just challenging enough to give him a satisfying sense of friction and accomplishment, while still remaining doable. He often surprises the rest of the family with how well he navigates even more challenging late-game stages.

My older kids are happy to play with him, helping him past the difficult parts, or playing their own extra-tough challenge levels. They all love to take on bosses together. They laugh and cheer each other on as they take on tougher challenges or replay their favorite stages. When one of the kids inadvertently deleted my 100% completion game save–I’m not naming names here; they know who they are–I ultimately shrugged it off because we could just start anew.

Now to be sure, Astro Bot isn’t likely to be as ubiquitous for my kids’ generation as Mario was for mine. In the ’80s, video game releases were sporadic and mascot characters were almost unheard of. Today, kids get into video games in all sorts of ways, from mobile devices and tablets to consoles, with massive, established franchises like Minecraft and Fortnite. Almost every gamer who came of age in the 1980s has a memory of Super Mario, but Astro’s impact will be more diffused because there are more avenues leading to the same destination. Astro won’t be a universal constant for its time period, and only time will tell if it has anywhere even remotely approaching Mario’s staying power. Still, it will always be special to me for what it has meant in my household.

Astro Bot has enjoyed plenty of success over the last year. It has sold well, inspired merchandise (including multiple special-edition controllers), and won the top honor at The Game Awards 2024. For me, though, the impact has been more personal: Astro Bot is the game that unlocked a sense of curiosity and play in my kids, and sparked their interest in playing video games more broadly. When I see them playing it, it’s like staring through a portal in time and watching myself all those years ago–face alight with the hypnotic glow of an old brown television, mouth agape as my mind reels at the possibilities of this magical new medium.
