Octopath Traveler 0 Will Limit The Size Of Your City Based On Your Console

Later this year, Octopath Traveler 0 will put you in control of your own destiny as you attempt to rebuild your town alongside a party of heroes. But the size of your city is going to be limited based on which system you choose to play the game on.

Square Enix has shared the Octopath Traveler 0 specs (via Wario64), which reveal that each console has a limit to the buildings that can be added to a town. Nintendo Switch comes in far below the other platforms with a 250 building limit. Switch 2 and PlayStation 4 can handle 400 buildings. But to get the maximum of 500 buildings, you’ll need to play the game on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, or PC.

When it comes to rendering resolution and frame rate, the Switch once again lags far behind the other consoles with 1280 x 720 and a maximum of 30 FPS. Switch 2, PS4, and Xbox Series S can all reach 1920 x 1080 resolution, but the Series S can also hit 120 FPS while the other two consoles are locked at 60 FPS. PS5 and Xbox Series X both have 3840 x 2160 resolution and 120 FPS, and the PC version allows users to select their own resolution and frame rate.

After playing a demo for Octopath Traveler 0 during Gamescom, GameSpot’s Steve Watts praised the game’s expanded customization, larger parties, and bigger towns. Octopath Traveler 0 will arrive on December 4 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch. However, Square Enix has revealed that there won’t be an option to upgrade the Switch version to the Switch 2 version.

Subscription services in gaming are popular, and while they are very far from the only way to buy and play games, the profile of the business model is growing thanks in part to the backing of multi-trillion-dollar company Microsoft and its Xbox Game Pass service. Pete Hines, the longtime Bethesda marketing and publishing boss who retired after Microsoft bought his company, has now shared his thoughts on subscription services for games–and he has some issues.

In an interview with dbltap, Hines began by saying he doesn’t work at Bethesda anymore and is under no assumption that he what he knew when he was there still holds true today. That said, he believes he is involved enough in gaming still today to understand “what I considered to be some short-sighted decision making several years ago, and it seems to be bearing out the way I said.”

Hines said his main issue with a subscription service like Game Pass or others is that the economics might not always make sense–and that’s a critical point in a world with mass layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations.

“Subscriptions have become the new four letter word, right? You can’t buy a product anymore. When you talk about a subscription that relies on content, if you don’t figure out how to balance the needs of the service and the people running the service with the people who are providing the content–without which your subscription is worth jack sh*t–then you have a real problem,” he said.

Hines went on to say a company behind a subscription service for games needs to “properly acknowledge, compensate, and recognize what it takes to create that content and not just make a game, but make a product.”

The “tension” inherent in the situation that Hines outlined is “hurting a lot of people,” including game developers, Hines said.

“Because they’re fitting into an ecosystem that is not properly valuing and rewarding what they’re making,” he said.

These comments appear to be aligned with what Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick has said about subscription services. While the company might put some older titles on subscription services like Game Pass–and the company has done this with GTA 5–Zelnick said he wouldn’t launch a brand-new game into Game Pass because of the economics. Zelnick has acknowledged that Microsoft putting Call of Duty on Game Pass will no doubt help drive subscribers to the service, but the executive said this may only work “for a period of time.”

While Microsoft launches all of its first-party games into Xbox Game Pass on day one, Sony doesn’t do this with its own PlayStation Plus membership program. PlayStation’s former president Jim Ryan seemed to agree with Zelnick and previously discussed how this doesn’t make economic sense.

For its part, Electronic Arts has a subscription service called EA Play Pro, and for $17/month, members can get access to the company’s newest games at launch. Ubisoft, meanwhile, has a subscription service called Ubisoft+ ($18/month) that allows members to play new releases on day one.

Of course, subscription services are not the only way to access games today, and Microsoft has maintained from the onset of Game Pass that it’s just one option for players–they can always buy a game outright as well. Still, some fear that the economics of Game Pass could lead to troubled times down the road.

There has been significant upheaval at Microsoft in recent times, with the company enacting mass layoffs, cancelling games, and closing at least one studio. For the latest financial year, Xbox Game Pass generated nearly $5 billion annually for the first time.

The Lenovo Legion Go 2 is officially available to preorder ahead of its October release, and we also now know how much each of its SKUs will cost: $1,100 for the standard Z2 model and $1,350 for the higher-specced Z2 Extreme version. That makes the handheld gaming PC quite expensive, but the device does have some high-quality hardware inside of it.

Internally, the base model is powered by the AMD Z2 SoC, while the premium model has more power with its AMD Z2 Extreme chip. Other specs include a high amount of LPDDR5X RAM, with the Z2 model getting 16GB and the Z2 Extreme having 32GB. Both of these devices are equipped with a 1TB PCIe SSD–with an option to add up to 2TB of extra storage via MicroSD–an 8.8-inch 1200p OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, and a 74Wh battery.

The Legion Go 2 also has Switch-like functionality, as its TrueStrike controllers are detachable. This allows the unit to shift between handheld, tabletop, console, or FPS modes. Switching to FPS mode is especially interesting, as the TrueStrike controller adopts a joystick position.

The Legion Go 2 also has an updated thermal design that delivers up to 45% more airflow, 2W speakers with Nahimic and spatial audio, near-field dual mics, and a 3.5mm jack for wired gear. You’ll also get a voucher for three months of PC Game Pass, so you’ll have a library of games you can access right out of the box, like Hollow Knight: Silksong.

This isn’t the only handheld gaming PC coming out soon, as the ROG Xbox Ally is expected to launch during the holiday season. Xbox partnered with Asus on this Windows-based handheld, which will be available in a base model and a premium “X” edition.

The white base model Xbox Ally is equipped with an AMD Ryzen Z2A chip, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD with a 60Wh battery, while the black Xbox Ally X has an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme APU, 24GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, and an 80Wh battery. Both devices have the same 7″ 1080p screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, and in terms of ergonomics, they’re designed to feel more comfortable with their sculpted handles. The Xbox Ally targets a resolution of 720p, while the Xbox Ally X aims for a 1080p resolution.

The other big thing to note here is that both handhelds are running on a version of Windows that’s designed to make accessing games easier and smoother. The main issue with Windows-based mobile gaming PCs is that the flexibility they give users with accessing various storefronts is countered by an unintuitive desktop experience. At the end of the day, they’re still PCs, and accessing apps on them can be awkward due to the size of the screen.

With the Xbox Ally, the Xbox App now supports multiple storefronts like Steam, GOG, and Epic Games, allowing you to gather all of your downloaded games into a centralized launcher.

While the new Legion Go 2 is pricy, you can still get several of the previous models at a lower price. For an entry-level option, there’s the Lenovo Legion Go S for $650, which has an 8-inch 120Hz Lenovo PureSight display and an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip with Radeon graphics. This one doesn’t have detachable controllers, but with 16GB of RAM and a 512TB SSD, it’s still a solid option that can easily play a wide variety of games.

Best Buy also has the first-generation Lenovo Legion Go for $740. This model does have detachable controllers, the Z1 Extreme processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. It’s not as advanced as the upcoming model, but it’s still surprisingly powerful.

Roblox Will Age-Verify All Players Who Use Voice Chat By End Of Year

Roblox developers announced plans to introduce comprehensive age verification for all players who wish to communicate in-game. The verification will use “a combination of facial age estimation technology, ID age verification, and verified parental consent.”

Roblox detailed the upcoming changes in a statement from chief safety officer Matt Kaufman, which it published on its website. In the statement, Kaufman claims the new methods will provide a more accurate age estimate than user input alone.

Once these system are in place, Roblox has promised to introduce more safety tools to prevent children from playing with adults who they don’t know in real life. The announcement touts that Roblox has introduced over 100 safety tools to the platform since January 2025, including an open source AI system called “Roblox Sentinel” that’s meant to detect early signs of child endangerment.

The announcement does not outline a more specific timetable for these changes or address any privacy concerns players may have.

“We hope this move sets a standard that other gaming, social media, and communication platforms follow,” the statement reads.

The change will make Roblox compliant with the UK’s Online Safety Act, which passed in early August.

These changes come after Roblox has come under legislative scrutiny. After a 2024 report from Bloomberg exposed a pedophile problem on the platform, Congressman Ro Khanna promoted a petition in August to demand that Roblox do more to prevent child abuse.

In March, Roblox CEO and co-founder David Baszucki responded to the allegations, saying, “My first message would be, if you’re not comfortable, don’t let your kids be on Roblox,” which prompted criticism from parents.

On Switch 2, players can expect shorter load times, reduced input latency, steady 30fps, and clearer visuals overall thanks to better draw distances. With DLSS upscaling, Hogwarts Legacy displays in 1440p resolution in docked mode and 1080p on the Switch 2’s screen. The Switch 2’s DLSS upscaling really helps Hogwarts Legacy 2’s It also has better audio performance on Switch 2.

In addition to performance upgrades, Hogwarts Legacy supports mouse controls with Nintendo’s new Joy-Con 2 Controllers.

Note that Hogwarts Legacy on Switch 2 comes on a Game-Key Card, which means none of the game data is on the cartridge itself, and instead it acts as physical DRM that unlocks the digital version. You’ll need to download the game to your console before you can play.

If you already own Hogwarts Legacy on Switch, you can purchase an upgrade pack for $10 on the eShop. Notably, the Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy still retails for $60 on the eShop, and the physical edition appears to be out of print.

Hogwarts Legacy takes place well before the events of Harry Potter. It sees you creating your own character and enrolling in Hogwarts. You’ll learn a variety of useful spells during your adventure, as you set out to discover a secret regarding ancient magic and a dangerous dragon. It earned positive reviews from critics and was the No. 1 bestselling game of 2023.

Can Inaccessibility Make A Game Better? This Game Makes A Strong Case For It

How does one properly deal with grief? The grief of recollecting beautiful memories, knowing they can never return. The grief of watching the life you built for yourself drastically slip away. The grief of seeing a loved one lose themselves to dementia. I’ve lived these moments. The pain of watching my grandfather, the kindest and gentlest man in my life, lose his entire personality and identity to dementia. The worst part is arguably watching the disease progress, seeing him lose more and more every year. Yet, throughout these powerful and intense moments of grief, love shines through in every scenario. This is the excellence of And Roger, a visual novel that swept me away with its brilliant gameplay and masterful storytelling, and for the first time in my life, made me reconsider how I critique inaccessibility.

Spoilers for And Roger to follow.

Developed by TearyHand Studio, And Roger follows a couple as the wife, Sofia, progressively loses herself to dementia. The hour-long game, composed of three chapters, recounts moments throughout Sofia’s life, particularly those associated with her husband, Roger. Players see the evolution of the couple’s life together, performing varying quick-time events to progress the story. Yet, with each loving and tender core memory, the shadows of Sofia’s disability continuously lurk.

But I’m not here to explore the emotional depth of one of the most powerful games I’ve ever played. Rather, I want to explore something that continually struck me as I completed each minigame: how a lack of accessibility, ultimately leading me to struggle, made the story much more impactful. The power of this short experience was so great that it made me reflect on my own beliefs and journalistic practices as both a disability reporter and disabled gamer. How I view accessibility will forever be changed because of this game.

Love and quick time events

And Roger begins with Sofia as a small child, struggling to wake herself. She tells herself she’s exhausted and dizzy–that her body feels abnormally heavy. The music during this sequence is haunting and made me feel uneasy, as if I were about to enter a horror game. Instead, I found myself thrown into the game’s first QTE, which required me to rapidly press a white button to sit Sofia up. Like Sofia, I struggled immensely to click the button on the screen. With every slip, she would fall back into her bed, forcing me to start over. And after completing the task, I felt drained, barely able to move my hand across the mouse. My stamina mirrored hers, yet this was only the beginning; as she slowly forced herself into the bathroom, we were confronted by another minigame: brushing her teeth.

After finishing that sequence, players are introduced to a strange man that Sofia mistakes for her father. He appears friendly, instructing her to go about her day and eat breakfast. The interactions are tense, with one minigame consisting of the strange man feeding Sofia, much to her objection. The uneasiness builds, with the stranger asking Sofia to take some medication to feel better.

As a scared child, she resists. And the QTE expertly reflects her struggles to fight. Again, by rapidly pressing a button, players are meant to push the man’s hand away. The event itself was impossible to complete without outside assistance. Like Sofia, I felt powerless, completely unable to budge the extended hand until someone else was able to take control. After the event, I felt considerably weaker, but I continued to play, leading Sofia out of the apartment and into a bakery where she collapses at the sight and smells of a presumably safe space.

The bakery remains a key setting, both in terms of QTEs and core memories. Chapter Two begins with Sofia entering the bakery to purchase baked goods; There she meets Roger, and the connection is immediate. The ensuing dates consist of QTEs ranging from moving dials to choose a hairstyle, to tracing heart monitor lines as the two talk. It’s a beautiful way to explore their blooming relationship, and the games expertly reflect the tenderness and fragility of new love.

Through these sections, Chapter Two beautifully demonstrates the importance of love and finding joy. Yet the struggles of dementia are ever present, and one QTE abruptly and forcibly brought me back into Sofia’s current world.

Food is integral to the relationship between Sofia and Roger. Their romance began at the bakery, and numerous QTEs–from chopping vegetables to shifting dials to purchase bread–reflect this special bond. In one scene, players are required to spin a button around a pot, stirring the soup inside. If the button falls outside of the ring, the meter to complete the objective progressively depletes. On numerous occasions, my strength and stamina levels would fail to keep up with continuously spinning a button. After approximately 10 minutes and several breaks, I finished the task, once again leaving me physically exhausted. And after finishing and eating the meal, Sofia mimicked my energy levels, dropping the pot of soup on the floor.

Inaccessibility as a tool

I’ve been professionally critiquing accessibility in games for six years. My reviews always focus on what is or isn’t included, and how the lack of appropriate options or designs make games unplayable. With And Roger, I found myself conflicted with my own ethics and morals as a disability reporter. As someone who regularly pushes back on the belief that accessibility can ruin artistic vision, I struggled coming to terms with the fact that, in this instance, inaccessibility had made the game so much more profound.

Sofia says she feels like she forgot something in a still for And Roger.

Players are meant to feel Sofia’s struggles as she navigates her world. We’re meant to feel her exhaustion, frustration, and animosity toward people and activities that once brought so much light into her life. And for me, someone with a physical disability, struggling to perform and finish certain QTEs only enhanced my connection with her. Do I recommend more games adopt this practice of forgoing accessibility? Absolutely not. But for this specific work of art, the emotional journey was vastly improved because I struggled to play.

And Roger wants players to appreciate the everyday moments in life, cherishing them on the chance they’re one day outside of your control. Yet in addition to a greater appreciation for life, I also have a newfound appreciation for games and the unique way my disability interacts with them. Inaccessibility is so innately tied to the disabled experience. And Roger showed me that there is often beauty in moments of frustration.

A big new update for No Man’s Sky launched recently, adding the ability to create custom ships, but another custom creation is getting a lot of attention this week: a recreation of the office space from the popular NBC comedy The Office.

Redditor Ok_Misterpiece_9363 (via Kotaku) showed off their epic creation on Reddit this week, drawing heaps of praise in part of the very impressive attention to detail on display in the work. All the basics are recreated, of course, like the general layout of the office and the desks. The downstairs warehouse is there, too.

But this user-created space really shines with the finer points, like two chairs on the roof to signify where Jim and Pam watched fireworks together, along with the snowman-like sculptures in the parking lot where Jim was terrorized by Dwight.

It also includes a radar speed sign outside and multiple people standing around it, mirroring that time Michael ran a humanly impossible 31 mph. These smaller details aren’t in the flyover video embedded below, but can be found in the creation itself and shared by the creator in comments posted on Reddit.

This is just the latest example of the immense creativity of No Man’s Sky players, and you don’t have to look hard to find more. Game creator Sean Murray highlighted some of his favorite No Man’s Sky custom ship builds this week, including a ship modeled after Thomas the Tank engine and even himself.

As for The Office, the show’s spin-off series The Paper is out now on Peacock. The show follows the same in-universe documentary crew that made The Office, but this time they’re making a documentary about a struggling newspaper and the efforts to revitalize it. The show stars Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, all episodes are out now, and a second season has already been ordered.

Ahead of Black Ops 7’s November release, Treyarch dropped a brief video to answer some questions about the game’s multiplayer. The developer discussed some of the movement changes coming to Call of Duty in Black Ops 7 as well as teased more remastered maps from 2012’s Black Ops 2.

A lot of popular Call of Duty maps have been remastered over the years, and Black Ops 7 is already confirmed to have three at launch. Raid, Hijacked, and Express return this year, but they’ve all been remastered in previous Black Ops games, leaving fans eager for different maps to appear.

When asked if players can get some Black Ops 2 remasters that have never been seen before, Treyarch design director Matt Scronce simply answered, “Yes, you can.”

Maps like Yemen and Plaza have been highly requested over the years, so hopefully these locations will finally return to Call of Duty as remastered maps in Black Ops 7.

Scronce also discussed the movement for Black Ops 7 multiplayer. The developer re-confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 doesn’t feature jet packs or wall-running mechanics. Instead, the game includes redefined omnimovement with a wall-jump ability, which can be chained together for up to three jumps.

“On that second and third jump, you’re going to lose a little bit of momentum,” Scronce explained. “We honestly want to make sure people aren’t ping ponging around the maps.”

Activision recently revealed that the previously announced Carry Forward program for Black Ops 7 has been cancelled, mostly. Weapons, operator skins, and other cosmetics from Black Ops 6 will no longer transfer to Black Ops 7. Only double XP tokens and GobbleGums will continue to carry forward.

Life Is Strange TV Series Officially Happening After 9 Years

Amazon MGM Studios has announced that its Life is Strange TV series is officially going ahead with a greenlight order. The TV series is based on the game franchise and has been ordered straight to series. The show’s creator and showrunner is Charlie Covell, who previously adapted The End of the F***king World and Kaos.

Square Enix, which owns the rights to the game series, is producing the TV show, along with Sonic the Hedgehog movie producers Story Kitchen and Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap.

“It’s a huge honor to be adapting Life Is Strange for Amazon MGM Studios,” Covell said in a statement. “I am a massive fan of the game, and I’m thrilled to be working with the incredible teams at Square Enix, Story Kitchen and LuckyChap.”

The story of the TV series will follow Max and Chloe, the two main characters from the first game. The conceit in the game is that Max can rewind time, but obviously a lot of horrible stuff happens.

“I can’t wait to share Max and Chloe’s story with fellow players and new audiences alike,” Covell said.

A TV show based on Life is Strange has been in the works for nearly a decade, but this is the first time it’s actually receiving an official order to me made. In 2021, it was revealed that singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes was in the mix to oversee the music in the show, but it’s unclear if that’s still the case.

It’s been a busy week for news about film and TV video game adaptations. Before this, Paramount announced a Call of Duty movie, Amazon announced Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in its Tomb Raider series, Netflix cancelled The Legend of Lara Croft, and the Street Fighter movie got a release date and cast.

Life is Strange joins not only the Tomb Raider series at Amazon, but also a long-in-development God of War series and Season 2 of Fallout. Amazon also has the Mass Effect TV show and the Wolfenstein TV show.

The Life is Strange series was created by French developer Dontnod and launched in 2015. It spawned multiple sequels, the latest of which was 2024’s Life is Strange: Double Exposure from Deck Nine.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 Reveal Date Already Decided, Says Nomura

With two games in the bag, the finale of the Final Fantasy Remake Trilogy is inevitably drawing closer. Last year saw the middle chapter of the saga, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, released on console and PC, and producer Tetsuya Nomura says that Square Enix knows exactly when it’ll officially reveal the game. Just don’t expect him to provide a reveal date–for the reveal date–for the game announcement just yet.

“It is going very smoothly,” Nomura said during a recent Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis livestream (translated by Genki JPN on Twitter/X). “The announcement timing has been decided, and we will stick to that schedule, so please rest assured and wait.”

Nomura also added that work on Kingdom Hearts 4 is “progressing well and according to schedule,” but he remained quiet on any other details regarding the long-in-development game. As for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, it remains to be seen if Square Enix will formally announce the game on its own channels or through a partner event. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was first revealed during the 2015 PlayStation Showcase during E3 2015, while Final Fantasy: Rebirth was unveiled during Summer Game Fest 2023.

Details on the game are being kept under wraps for now, but back in January, series producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that the story scenario for it was completed by the end of 2024 and that he was “very satisfied” with it. Game director Naoki Hamaguchi also confirmed that development on the third game began right after Rebirth was completed.

While Rebirth introduced some big changes and plot twists to the established lore of Final Fantasy 7, one of the other big changes we could see is a multiplatform release for the game. The previous Final Fantasy 7 remake games were timed exclusives for PS4 and PS5, but Square Enix’s new multiplatform strategy to secure long-term growth could see the game launch the same day on PC and Xbox Series X|S so that it can reach a wider audience.
