This DIY Gyro Controller Makes Me Wish Gamepads Would Evolve

by admin September 9, 2025

Regardless of how the silicon powering our gaming devices continues to advance, and despite the marginal acceptance of motion controls and cute quirks like the PlayStation’s touchpad, the way we interact with games has been pretty static since roughly the arrival of the original PlayStation DualShock in 1997: two thumbsticks, a d-pad, four shoulder buttons, and four face buttons housed in a pretty rigid format that’s resistant to change. But one very cool DIY project from YouTuber PyottDesign shows one possible evolutionary path the modern gamepad could take if we were willing to move beyond standard input setups or embrace more modular build designs.

This project builds off of the ideas found in PyottDesign’s “Ultimate FPS” controller from last year. That project included a trackball in place of the right analog stick and a mouse wheel for easy navigation of lists and menus in games. PyottDesign’s new “Valence Gyro Touch” sticks to a more familiar form factor, keeps the mouse wheel, adds a touchpad in a more comfortable-looking place than the Steam Controller had one, and makes use of “mixed input” techniques on PC to allow for gyro controls to capture the finesse of aiming with something like a mouse while harnessing the analog input of a joystick for movement.

Read More: The Steam Deck’s Funky Controls Prove That Gamepads Are Outdated

As you can see in the video, the design makes for a very twitchy, high-performance set of inputs that are particularly effective for first-person shooters (after a steep learning curve, I’m sure). It’s also an impressive build (though it’s kind of a bummer that AI was used to finalize some of the code that makes everything come together). But I have to wonder what kinds of complex gaming experiences we’re missing out on when everything needs to be designed for the analog stick input and dozen or so buttons of the modern video game controller. Even this cool DIY project is limited by the fact that so many modern games aren’t built with a more sophisticated set of inputs in mind.

I’m not saying we all need to embrace the Steel Battalion approach to input design, but damn would it be a fun challenge for the games industry if, say, the next PlayStation controller resembled something more like a Formula 1 steering wheel. And it’s not just because more buttons equals “more cool” (though maybe it does, a little), but because I want to find new, challenging ways to interact with games. As PyottDesign comments at the end of his video on the Valence controller, he’s “really excited to see how [he] can push [his] skill level with it.” That kind of invitation to master a new physical input method is exciting to me, and if games were pushed to demand more inputs and attention than what the same set of buttons I’ve been using for over 20 years allows for, I wonder what kinds of immersive new experiences we could be enjoying.

Borderlands 4 PC Specs Revealed, Alongside Graphics Settings And Accessibility Features

by admin September 9, 2025

Gearbox has disclosed the PC specs for Borderlands 4. The specs were shared by 2K on the Borderlands 4 website, covering both minimum and recommended. 2K also disclosed the numerous PC-specific settings that players can choose from, along with a range of accessibility features.

For the minimum specs, 2K said players who meet the standards can run Borderlands 4 with “solid performance on older PC hardware.” The recommended PC specs, meanwhile, provide “the intended experience for Borderlands 4,” 2K said. These settings strike a balance between performance and graphics, 2K said.

Jump Space devs outline a bevy of early access roadmap updates and an easy-on-your-wallet price point

by admin September 9, 2025

Jump Space! It’s a game with a name that’ll have you thinking, “wait, that’s not what it was called, was it?” And you’d be right about that, as due to some trademark problems, the game was rebranded from Jump Ship to its new name Jump Space back in August. Later that same month, developer Keepsake Games announced the game would be launching into early access September 19th. And now, as in today September 9th now, Keepsake Games have shared an early access roadmap for the game, as well as how much it’ll cost you.

Right, let’s get the pricing out of the way. It’ll be a pretty reasonable $19.99 / £16.75 / €19.50, making it the latest anticipated September release to be priced in a way that’ll have you wondering why they’re not charging more. On to the roadmap!

At launch, the sci-fi shooter will include nine mission types. These include one where you’ll try not to kick the bucket while fending off a bunch of robots, where you have to hunt for loot, and another where you’ll be raiding some baddies’ bases. There’ll be more than 50 sectors to play in four galaxy regions, and you’ll have two ships to choose from with 26 ship components to make them a bit more custom.

That’s all a part of Chapter 1, The Resistance Coalition. Chapter 2: Atira Strikes back will bring a lot more to the game like multiple endless modes, sector modifiers, melee weapons, more story and sectors, new enemies, mission types, a photo mode, offline support and a lot more. These will be coming through multiple updates through to Q1, 2026, but a couple of features from this chapter, text chat and lobby browser, will be available at launch.

Then after that, Chapter 3: Secrets of the Telmari will add in a first-person pilot view, a scanner revamp, even more new enemies and mission types, a new ship, ground boss, and again, even more. These will start to be added from Q1 2026 onwards until Chapter 4: Heart of Corruption, which doesn’t have a release window or any revealed features just yet. That’s a lot of bloody stuff!

As of now, Keepsake doesn’t know when early access will end and the 1.0 release will release, so you’ll just have to join them for the ride in the meantime.

Jump Space launches into early access September 19th on Steam.

Battle Suit Aces, The Latest From Battle Chef Studio Trinket, Launches Its Mecha Card Battle Action This October

by admin September 9, 2025

It’s almost time to shuffle up and get in the robot. Game Informer can exclusively reveal that Battle Suit Aces, the new mecha card-battling game from Trinket Studios, will arrive on October 7 for PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC.

Trinket Studios made a splash with 2017’s Battle Chef Brigade, which mixed side-scrolling action with a match-3 puzzle system to portray a fantasy cooking competition. Similarly, Battle Suit Aces also blends several genres and concepts; in a card-fighting RPG, you follow the USS Zephyr and its crew through a planet-hopping voyage across the stars to try and stop a looming, universe-endangering threat.

Card battles play out on a board, where you can deploy your team of mechs, pilots, and drones to combat the enemy, trying to strike through their lines and destroy their base before they do the same. Between missions, you’ll be able to recruit and get to know your crewmates, as well as upgrade their mech suits.

Trinket is planning numerous story missions driven by both the plot and your recruited cast of characters, as well as a story influenced by the factions you support and the relationships you build. Different Factions can also help you lean into your chosen playstyle, too, opting for specific methods of crushing your enemies with your small army of pilot pals and giant mecha.

No word on exact pricing just yet, but Trinket Studios has confirmed it will launch Battle Suit Aces on PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC via Steam.

Nintendo and accessories manufacturer Genki settles Switch 2 trademark infringement lawsuit

by admin September 9, 2025

Nintendo’s lawsuit against accessory manufacturer Genki, which earlier this year debuted a mock-up Switch 2 unit before the console had actually been officially unveiled, has come to an end.

Back in May, Nintendo filed a copyright claim against Genki, when it accused the manufacturer of “capitalising” on demand for Switch 2 news and giving “contradictory and inconsistent” statements.

Nintendo and Genki have now reached a settlement, without any further need for a trial. As per official court documents, Genki is required to pay an undisclosed amount to Nintendo for damages.

In addition, Genki along with all other subsidiaries of its parent company Human Things are banned from using any Nintendo logo, design or “anything confusingly similar thereto”, in “any manner in connection with its business”.

Genki is now also prohibited from using approximations such as ‘Glitch’, ‘Glitch 2’, ‘Genki Direct’ and ‘Genki Indirect’ when promoting its own products, with these of course being very close to Nintendo’s own Switch and Nintendo Direct-related branding.

The accessories manufacturer is also no longer able to use colour schemes in any of its products or packaging which are “confusingly or substantially” similar to Nintendo’s. The court document states: “Namely, red and white, red and blue, green and pink, blue and yellow, purple and orange, pink and yellow, and purple and green.”

You can read the full court document here.

Anker’s Prime USB-C Charging Station Drops Below Black Friday Pricing, Ready for Apple’s New Device Launch

by admin September 9, 2025

Too many things in our life need to get plugged in. Our phones, watches, headphones — damn near everything that isn’t attached to us needs to be charged at the end of the day. And now that it’s gotten even more complicated that everything is moving away from USB-A to USB-C. Sure, USB-C is a better standard and can do a lot more, but now I’ve got a bunch of USB-A charging blocks that are worthless to me. It’s time for a singular solution. Anker has its Prime Charger with a clock LCD display one sale for 35% off. Normally, it goes for $170, but for a limited time the price has shot down to just $110. That’s a savings of $60.

Avoid having a ton of clutter and cables running everywhere at your desk or on your nightstand. The Anker Prime Charger has four USB-C ports and two USB-A ports so you can keep all your devices together and nearby when it’s time to charge them. USB-C i universally compatible so use the hub to charge your laptops whether they are Apple or PC, your phone whether its an iPhone, Galaxy, or something else. Charge your earbuds, tablets, and more.

See at Amazon

The Anker Prime Charger is capable of a maximum output of 250W between its six different ports. Three of the four USB-C ports each support 100W individually. The first one is special, capable of an output of 140W. Over that one, you can charge your stuff super quickly. A 16-inch MacBook Pro can go from zero to 50% in just 25 minutes. It will be fully charge in just over an hour and a half.

Tailor Your Charging With Smart Power Control

The dial on the side of the hub can be used to adjust the charging priority for your various devices plugged in. You can choose between port priority mode, dual laptop mode, or low current mode. Or just select AI power mode to have it automatically adjust to what is optimal.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Has A “Cheat Code” That You’ll Probably Want To Avoid Using

by admin September 9, 2025

Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally here, and players agree that the game kicks ass–mostly their own. Team Cherry’s metroidvania is a challenging adventure, but if you’re feeling masochistic, you can dial up the difficulty further with a “cheat” code that references (but is different than) the infamous Konami code. Simply head to the “Extras” section of the main menu and enter this sequence on the D-pad to unlock Steel Soul Mode:

Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right.

So what does Steel Soul Mode do? Once you start a new game, you’ve only got a single life with which to complete the game. No respawns or reloading saves: just a failed run if you fall. Veteran Hollow Knight players might recognize the mode as well, as it was in the first game and it was unlocked after the campaign was beaten for the first time.

If you are struggling right now, there is some good news as Silksong’s first patch will offer a “slight difficulty reduction” to the early bosses–Moorwing and Sister Splinter–when it goes live next week. PC players can also tweak the overall difficulty with several mods that have been released, and if you’re looking for walkthroughs, you can check out GameSpot’s Hollow Knight: Silksong guides hub for several helpful features.

After years of waiting, it looks like Silksong has been a massive hit right out of the gate. The game has reportedly passed 5 million players already and it’s one of the most popular games on Steam currently.

EA Sports FC 26 official ratings see Lamine Yamal the biggest winner as Mo Salah and Kylian Mbappe crowned the highest rated players

by admin September 9, 2025

The official ratings of the top 52 players in EA Sports FC 26 have been revealed, crowning Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappe as the highest rated players in this season’s edition.

Salah and Mbappe are 2 of 4 91-rated current pros in FC 26, with current Women’s Balon D’or holder Aitania Bonmati and Barcelona teammate (and former Balon D’or winner) Alexia Putellas climbing back to the top of the tree after what must’ve been a frustrating, but ultimately successful in a sense, season which saw Spain and Barcelona finish as runners up in both the European Championships and Champions League.

Elsewhere, after missing pretty much the entire season through injury, Rodri has seen his rating slip to 90 Overall (tied with teammate Erling Haaland), while Man City new boy Gigi Donnarumma is FC 26’s top goalkeeper with 89 Overall; a title shared with Liverpool’s Alisson and Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest upgrade among the world’s best players is Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, who has seen his rating go up by 8 points to a mighty 89 at just 18 years old. That’s the highest rating ever for an 18 year old, but not for a teenager. Wayne Rooney was handed a mighty 93 rating back in FIFA 06, whereas Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi were in their 20s before they surpassed Yamal’s current Overall in FIFA 06 and FIFA 09 respectively.

Other big upgrades include England and Arsenal’s continental-conquering striker Alessia Russo, who’s up 4 points to 89, whereas fellow Arsenal forward Mariona has stepped out of the shadow of her former Barcelona teammates since her move last summer to reach 89 herself.

Men’s Champions League winner Achraf Hakimi has stepped up to fill the full-back-shaped hole left by Theo Hernandez’s move to Saudi with a new +5 Overall of 89, while Raphinha has finally been rewarded for his explosive creativity with a bumper 89 rating too – level with his compatriot, Vinicius Junior.

These official FC 26 ratings come after EA Sports has revealed a slew of new Icons and Heroes for this year’s game, including long-requested names like Francesco Totti, Andres Iniesta and the recently retired Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Hollow Knight: Silksong’s first patch makes some early bosses slightly easier, out now in Steam and GOG beta

by admin September 9, 2025

The notes for Hollow Knight: Silksong’s first proper post-release patch have arrived. Team Cherry have been busy fixing bugs and making some “slight balance adjustments in the early game”, which you can now give a go early via beta branches on Steam and GOG.

That’ll mean you’re testing the changes ahead of the update’s planned full deployment next week, with Team Cherry aiming for a mid-week arrival “barring any unforeseen issues”. Now you know that, let’s get into the changes, which the studio have outlined in a post on the Steamy platform.

First of all, the bit that might prove controversial among hardened Skongers. As part of those early game balance tweaks, Team Cherry have opted to roll out a “slight difficulty reduction” for the boss fights against Moorwing and Sister Splinter. How you feel about that will likely depend on whether you’ve spent the past few days yelling at folks for seeking out mods or guides to help make their path through the metroidvania a bit less stressful.

Outside of that, the balancing’s also seen Sandcarvers have their damage reduced, plus increases in the rosary rewards dished out by relics, psalm cylinders, and courier deliveries. The prices of bellways and bell benches you run into around the game’s midway point have also dropped a bit. Oh, and there’s been a “slight increase in pea pod collider scale”.

That’s it for the balancing, with the rest being bug fixes for problems like “getting stuck floating after down-bouncing on certain projectiles”, “courier deliveries sometimes being inaccessible in Act 3”, and that “situation where players could remain cloakless after Slab escape sequence” I mentioned in the strap. No prolonged Hornet nudeness for the horn-dogs. Well, coatlessness really, but either way she might have gotten a bit cold, so an important fix.

I’ll list the rest of the fixes below, so you can scan through to see if anything you’ve run into crops up:

  • Fixed wish Infestation Operation often not being completable during the late game.
  • Fixed wish Beast in the Bells not being completable when Bell Beast is summoned at the Bilewater Bellway during the late game.
  • Fixed craft bind behaving incorrectly when in memories.
  • Fixed Lace tool deflect soft-lock at start of battle in Deep Docks.
  • Fixed Silk Snippers in Chapel of the Reaper sometimes getting stuck out of bounds.
  • Fixed Claw Mirrors leaving Hornet inverted if taking damage during a specific moment while binding.
  • Fixed Snitch Pick not giving rosaries and shell shards as intended.
  • Removed float override input (down + jump, after player has Faydown Cloak).

“All fixes will apply retroactively, so players who’ve hit a significant bug that prevents progress may want to switch over to public-beta to receive the fix,” Team Cherry wrote. “Further fixes are already being worked on for a second patch. If you have an issue and you don’t see the solution in the list above, we may be working on it.”

If you’re planning on jumping into the patch’s Steam beta, instructions for getting access can be found here. Just remember that you’ll likely need to disable any mods, such as these freshly released multiplayer ones, that you’ve got installed first.

Late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata laughed at the prospect of localising the original Animal Crossing

by admin September 9, 2025

Late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata laughed at the prospect of localising the original Animal Crossing, as he believed the game was so specific to Japan it would be too difficult.

In an interview with Time Extension, former Nintendo localisation manager Leslie Swan discussed some of the challenges of the job, citing the original Animal Crossing – first released in Japan on N64 as Animal Forest, before a localised version was released in America on the GameCube – as a particularly tricky project.

Nintendo’s Takashi Tezuka, who worked as a producer on Animal Crossing, asked Swan to localise the game. She agreed, despite not playing the game herself in advance as she usually would. “But then he said, ‘No, Leslie, I’m not sure you understand, it’s going to be difficult’,” she said. “And I kept having to assure him that we would make it happen.”

She continued: “Then like a month or two later, I was in a meeting with Mr. Iwata and some other heads of the development group, and we were just kind of going around saying, ‘Here’s what we’re going to be working on’, and I just said, ‘Well, Mr. Tezuka is asking us to work on Animal Forest’ and he just burst out in laughter. He just laughed and said, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to do this.’ And it’s true, just everything in that game was so specific to Japan.”

The localisation team had to rename every character, every catchphrase, and all the events, Swan explained. “So we wanted whatever it was to be something that would be useful in as many areas as possible so we would do things like call it ‘Fireworks Day’ or something so other cultures, not just the US, would be able to use it without it being tied to Independence Day,” she said.

“Then there were also some items that didn’t make sense at all. They would have so much charm in the Japanese version, but they wouldn’t have provided the same kind of charm for Western audiences. I can’t tell you the number of hours we spent on that game, all hands on deck. We were so lucky at that point that we didn’t have other big projects, as we pretty much had the entire staff dedicated to that game.”

In addition, the legal department had to clear every name, as the team were sure merchandise would be an option if the game sold well.

“It must have been at least six months or maybe a year for us to clear the name Animal Crossing,” Swan continued. “I remember we had so many other names that we were in love with and then we would be crushed when they would be rejected. My favourite was ‘Animal Acres’, because the grids of the town lent themselves to being called acres. But again, that didn’t clear.”

Hundreds of names were considered, before finalising Animal Crossing. “We really wanted to maintain ‘Animal’ in the name,” said Swan. “And we did try to keep ‘Forest’ in the name too, but legal told us, ‘No, that’s not going to happen’.”

Swan was also the voice of Princess Peach in Super Mario 64, in addition to working in the localisation team and on Nintendo Power. Eventually, she left Nintendo and retired in 2016.

“I have to say, I was so lucky to be able to work at Nintendo,” she reflected. “It was a lot of work. It was a lot of stress. But one of the things that kept me there as long as I stayed was I just felt like I was learning something new with every single product we worked on. There was new technology and there was always something new to be learned, and the teams I worked with were just so energetic. The whole of the company was just oozing energy. It felt like such a family.”
