If Elden Ring Nightreign wasn't punishing enough for you, FromSoft is adding a high-difficulty mode

FromSoftware unveils Elden Ring Nightreign’s new mode ahead of release tomorrow

by admin September 11, 2025

FromSoftware has unveiled its new Deep of Night mode for Elden Ring Nightreign, ahead of its release tomorrow, 11th September.

As revealed last week, this mode adds extra challenge to the multiplayer spin-off game. The world of Limveld will be full of deadlier enemies and Nightlords won’t be selectable, as in the main game. Instead, players will traverse multiple depths, with escalating difficulty and challenges.

Players will have access to stronger weapons, gained by defeating more powerful variants of enemies and minibosses. However, some of these will have detrimental effects as well as bonuses, so strategy will be required. A new load of relics will also be available, in addition to expanded slots.

Everdark Sovereigns – the more difficult alternative Nightlords – may also appear to ruin your run.

In short, this feels like the sort of mode Nightreign players have been craving! And it’s further evidence of FromSoftware continuing to evolve its formula further post-release, following the addition of a two player mode.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Upcoming Bioshock Movie Adaptation Based On The First Game

by admin September 10, 2025

Now that the film and TV industries have finally cracked the code to making decent, sometimes great, live-action adaptations of video games, there’s actually good reason to pay attention to the developments of these works. To be excited about them, even. One of the latest games to get the treatment is none other than Xbox 360-era darling BioShock. The first one (not Infinite, thank god).

As reported by The Direct, producer Roy Lee (A Minecraft Movie, Weapons, The Long Walk) said that while everything else about the movie must be kept secret, “it’s definitely going to be based on the first BioShock game.” The deep sea adaptation hit a snag after some necessary script work, but it looks like it’s on track; now it just awaits director Francis Lawrence (Constantine, The Hunger Games, The Long Walk) who first has to wrap work on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

While I’ve been something of a hater of the non-stop barrage of live-action video game adaptations, I find the idea of bringing the first BioShock “to life” as a big-budget movie a neat proposition. Sure, the story is the most obvious expression of why Atlas Shrugged’s themes are stupid, but the setting, the underwater city of Rapture, was a real treat to explore, and seeing it reproduced on the big screen should be a treat.

As a thematic device, Rapture is a pretty straightforward tool for skewering libertarian-minded politics, but as a setting, it’s dreamy and atmospheric, with tremendous potential for some seriously cool set and prop design. And if Francis Lawrence’s work on 2007’s I Am Legend is anything to go by, the man knows how to work well with evocative settings. Who knows, maybe we’ll take some better lessons away from this trip down to the doomed ocean floor city than we did the first time.

Elden Ring Nightreign Gets New Patch Ahead Of Deep Of Night

by admin September 10, 2025

From Software’s games tend to be challenging for most players, and the developer is making things even harder with Elden Ring Nightreign’s new Deep of Night mode. Before that launches later this week, Elden Ring Nightreign has received patch 1.02.2 with new bug fixes and gameplay tweaks. From Software has also shared a video that breaks down some of the changes coming in Deep of Night.

One of the ways Deep of Night will keep players on edge is that they won’t know which Night Lord they’re actually facing until the battle begins. Flexibility is going to be the key to overcoming those battles, and the video suggests preparing relic presets before going into those fights.

More powerful enemies will appear throughout Deep of Night, and players will have the opportunity to pick up weapons that can dispatch them. However, those weapons will have a detrimental effect on player characters that may make battles even more grueling. As players go deeper into Deep of Night, their enemies will become increasingly difficult.

In the patch notes, From Software indicated that Everdark Sovereign Libra may be a little easier going forward because his Condemned warriors will now have less damage negation and they will drop items that can help players in-battle.

Guardian class heroes will be receiving increased strength and dexterity when leveling up, as well as a larger range for their ultimate art’s attack. The patch also appears to penalize players who drop out of matches, even if their connection was disrupted. But players can remove the penalty if they rejoin the session.

Deep of Night will go live on September 11. The full notes for Elden Ring Nightreign version 1.02.2 are included below.

The Hearth and Harbour is a restaurant management RPG about finding community and avoiding war

by admin September 10, 2025

Cooking is a thing I think about almost on a daily basis, not because of the usual pesky reason that is my mortal coil demanding sustenance, but because I love to do it! Having a family background in hospitality will do that to you. Of course, doing this whole writing about games thingy is a bit of a different beast, but cooking does still often crop up in games. My only problem is I often wish it was a central aspect of a game, rather than a singular, miniscule feature. Lucky for me, a new restaurant management RPG called The Hearth and Harbour from the team behind The Pale Beyond has just been announced!

In The Hearth and Harbour, you play as Kit, who’s left their home behind in hopes of finding a new life, all while trying to avoid a war that’s on the way. Kit ends up in a harbour city called Lewthport, acquiring a rundown restaurant to restore – though this does require paying off a substantial loan. That’s where you come in! It’s up to you to decide what kind of establishment this becomes, like a greasy spoon, a fancy bistro, or something a bit gourmet.

Watch on YouTube

What this means in practical terms is choosing the layout and decor in the first instance, and once you’re up and running, The Hearth and Harbour turns into a turn-based tactical game where you have to seat customers, take orders, and make sure food arrives in good time. Happier customers, more money.

Outside of working hours, you’re able to wander around Lewthport. There’s a market to pick up ingredients from, you can build relationships with your suppliers, maybe head to the pub for a pint. There’s an opportunity to build a community here, and subsequently that affects how successful your restaurant ends up. You have to make important narrative choices through conversations too, it all seems quite neatly complex.

Not only is it made by The Pale Beyond developer Saltstore Studios, but The Hearth and Harbour is set in the same world and time period as the survival game. There’s no release date just yet, but you can count me in on keeping an eye on this one. You can wishlist it on Steam now.

A Ton Of Nintendo Switch Games Are Really Cheap Right Now

by admin September 10, 2025

We’re about to get a ton of new games coming out this fall, but if you want to catch up on older stuff you already missed, a recent sale on physical Switch games is a great place to start. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, and more are all decently discounted right now.

The sale is going on at the Amazon-owned daily deals site Woot which frequently unloads extra inventory of physical video games at cheap prices. The current sale is especially good, with just about ever major first-party Nintendo Switch game being $15-20 below the standard sticker price (which the company notoriously never lowers no matter how old the game is).

Here are some of best deals:

  • Super Mario Party Jamboree – $44 (27 percent off)
  • Luigi’s Mansion 3 – $43 (28 percent off)
  • Super Mario RPG – $35 (42 percent off)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening – $47 (22 percent off)
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze – $44 (27 percent off)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – $46 (23 percent off)
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Super Mario Odyssey – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Metroid Dread – $47 (22 percent off)
  • Splatoon 3 – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Mario & Luigi: Brothership – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Pokémon Shining Pearl/Brilliant Diamond – $45 (25 percent off)
  • Pokémon Scarlet/Violet – $47 (22 percent off)

If you already own a Switch 2, this is a great opportunity to snag any of these games you might have missed last generation. Not only do they work thanks to backwards compatibility, many of them even play better on the new, more powerful hardware. Super Mario Party Jamboree has an upgraded version on Switch 2 with new DLC for $80, so with this deal you can effectively save $16 off that completely new release. Unfortunately, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, which both look outstanding on Switch 2, aren’t part of the current sale.

Mario Kart World is already on sale for $10 off

It’s also worth noting, for anyone who didn’t get the Mario Kart World Switch 2 bundle, that Nintendo’s newest racer is part of the current Woot sale. It’s currently $70 for the physical edition, which doesn’t feel like saving much, but hey, welcome to the world of $80 games. Of course, if you were somehow coming to the Switch ecosystem for the first time and had to choose between either Mario Kart World or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, I would definitely recommend the latter. It’s cheaper and it feels like a more classic Mario Kart experience that benefits from years of post-launch updates and support, including dozens of extra characters and tracks in the form of a paid DLC add-on.

Go buy Xenoblade Chronicles X

Monolith Soft’s remaster of the Wii U open-world RPG only came out earlier this year and the Woot discount is its cheapest price yet. It’s $47 for a physical copy (the international version) which is 22 percent off the standard $60 price. It’s the definitive version of a great game that belongs in every RPG lover’s Switch collection. I suspect physical copies of it will become harder and harder to find, too. The soundtrack is great, the mechs are fun, and the world is sci-fi as hell.

New Grave Of The Fireflies Limited Edition Steelbook Is Only $18 At Amazon

by admin September 10, 2025

Shout Factory’s newest Studio Ghibli Steelbook Edition is on sale for a new all-time low price at Amazon and Walmart. Released in July for $27, Grave of the Fireflies Limited Edition Steelbook is down to just $17.89. Like other Shout Factory physical edition releases of Studio Ghibli films, Grave of the Fireflies is also available in a standard edition with a slipcover for $16.58 (was $25).

Grave of the Fireflies is just one of many Studio Ghibli films you can buy in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with a collectible steelbook case. A bunch of Studio Ghibli Steelbook Editions are on sale for less than $20. You can check out the full list below Grave of the Fireflies.

$17.89 (was $27)

Grave of the Fireflies Limited Edition Steelbook comes with 1080p Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film. For the extras, there’s a deep dive into its storyboards, several deleted scenes that were only produced as storyboards, image galleries, a collection of trailers, an interview with director Isao Takahata, and an interview with the late film critic Roger Ebert.

Unlike many Ghibli movies, the 1989 film directed by Isao Takahata isn’t exactly suitable for the whole family. Rated PG-13 due to blood and gore, this dark journey is set during the final days of World War II in Japan.

$16.58 (was $25)

At the moment, you’re saving less than two bucks by picking up the standard edition with a plastic case and cardboard sleeve. Outside of the packaging, this edition is the exact same as the Steelbook Edition.

While films produced by Studio Ghibli regularly focus on fantasy and contain environmentalism themes, Grave of the Fireflies is one of the rare exceptions here as it is based on the personal accounts of World War II survivor Akiyuka Nosaka. Grave of the Fireflies centers around 14-year-old Seita and and his four-year-old sister Setsuko, war orphans struggling to survive in the Japanese countryside food shortages, abusive relatives, and bombing raids by the Allied forces.

The film pulls no punches with its subject matter, but it’s still an all-time animated classic with a strong message at its core and fleeting moments of happiness during this bleak story. Just be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster with this movie.

Grave of the Fireflies’ case design looks more like last year’s The Boy and the Heron Steelbook release than the earlier releases in the Studio Ghibli Steelbook series. Grave of the Fireflies previously released on Blu-ray in 2012 with a Steelbook Edition with a singular primary background color. Prior editions are out of print.

Studio Ghibli Steelbook Blu-rays

For a more whimsical, lighter adventure, you might want to look at Studio Ghibli’s other movies, especially the ones directed by Hayao Miyazaki. You can’t go wrong with greatest hits like Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke–which are beautifully animated and have timeless stories to tell–while other movies like Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service are also fan favorites. Many of the Studio Ghibli Steelbook Editions are on sale for excellent prices as low as $16.19. We’ve listed all of the in-stock options below in alphabetical order.

The list above includes the majority of Studio Ghibli’s movie catalog, but some of the legendary Japanese studio’s animated films aren’t available with steelbook cases. To complete your collection, check out this Studio Ghibli standard Blu-ray edition hub we created on Amazon for the remaining films. The hub also includes Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro, the only film Hayao Miyazaki directed before founding Studio Ghibli.

Spirited Away and Kiki’s Delivery Service Film Comics – All-in-One Editions

For fans of Studio Ghibli’s signature art style, you might also want to grab the recently published All-in-One Edition hardcover omnibuses published by Viz Media. These are essentially collections of screenshots and dialogue/text from each movie, allowing fans to experience the story in a different medium. Plus, you get to admire the lovely artwork without needing to pause your TV.

Ponyo’s All-in-One Edition just released on July 22, and preorders for Princess Mononoke’s omnibus are live now.

Meanwhile, Howl’s Moving Castle fans should also check out the new Deluxe Limited Edition of Diana Wynne Jones’ novel, which served as the basis for the Miyazaki-directed film adaptation. The World of Howl Trilogy is also getting a new box set in early October.

Crusader Kings 3’s Coronations DLC debuts to boos and jeers from the Steam review court, largely thanks to “broken” oath breaking

by admin September 10, 2025

I bring ill tidings from the land of folks who’re usually busy stressing about their heirs, sire. Crusader Kings 3’s paid Coronations DLC has arrived alongside the Ascendant update, and I regret to inform you that the little expansion’s immediately been put in the stocks. The rotten tomatoes doth fly towards its bonce, and the resulting juice has turned its Steam reviews a mostly negative shade of crimson.

Coronations was always set to be a relatively minor stop in the Chapter 4 pipeline of DLC Paradox have been gradually rolling out to their regal strategy thing since March this year, especially compared to larger expansions like the beefier Khans of the Steppe and All Under Heaven add-ons, which bookend it on the release timeline. Basically, it makes ascending to the throne more of a big deal than it has been in the past, with a proper party and an oath you take to set a goal to accomplish during your rule. You can leaf through the full notes here.

Watch on YouTube

Given that Paradox were set to charge for those pretty minimal, if important, additions, at least one Reddit seer was predicting a week ago that Coronations might well end up struggling to impress the virtual regents of Steam. It’s currently sitting at a mostly negative verdict from 188 reviews on there, with complaints also having leaked into the top posts of the Redditosphere, so that random citizen’s crystal ball wasn’t playing up. To be fair, predicting a Paradox DLC might be controversial doesn’t exactly make you Nostradamus at this point.

A lot of the objections in these reviews are simply folks arguing that Paradox should have made this update a free one, either because they view it as not offering enough depth to justify the £4.29/$4.99/€4.99 price tag, or because coronation mechanics like these are significant enough they should be rolled into the base game. Much like with Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2’s paid DLC clans, the publishers are being accused of nickel and diming players with their add-ons. On one hand, Paradox have clearly stated what you’ll be getting if you opt to buy the Coronations pack, so you can’t really accuse them of being deceptive. The argument’s whether this is greedy monetisation, and I’d say it certainly lands on the grubby or unneccesary end of the scale.

The less subjective aspect of the negative reception comes in the form of widespread complaints about those new oaths breaking in scenarios when they shouldn’t. I’ve not managed to ensure peace even though I’m not at war. I completed my oath years ago, but have subsequently been told I’ve broken it, and been served the substantial penalties to match. A number of players also reckon the timeframes given are too short, with 20 years to complete three legendary hunts being the main culprit.

That said, some of the examples I’ve read through feel like they can probably be attributed to the normal bad luck or quirkiness you might get when Crusader Kinging. Oh no, I’ve broken my oath of preparing a good heir because my son died and my grandson’s a bit crap. That’s a bit more c’est la medieval monarch vie to me.

This being Crusader Kings, there’s already a mod to disable the broken oath event if you wish. Coronations has also left a plenty of folks concerned about the game’s future. Specifically Paradox’s ability to deliver something good with the much-anticipated All Under Heaven DLC, which is set to expand the map into Asia, letting you lord over the likes of China and Japan. We’ll have to see if the publisher can wrest back the non-reviled DLC crown.

Only nine franchises make up the top 20 all-time best-selling PlayStation chart in the US – can you guess how many are Call of Duty games?

by admin September 10, 2025

In honour of PlayStation’s 30th birthday yesterday in the US, data company Circana has dug out figures showing the top 20 best-selling PlayStation video games ever (date-range Jan 1995 to July 2025). Don’t get too excited.

Call of Duty dominates it, occupying nine of the top 20 spots, though Rockstar’s games lead the list, with Grand Theft Auto 5 top, Red Dead Redemption 2 fourth, GTA San Andreas fifth and GTA Vice City ninth.

The surprise performer for me is Insomniac’s relatively recent Marvel’s Spider-Man series, with the debut 2018 game in sixth and the PlayStation 5-launch-adjacent Miles Morales expandalone in 12th.

Elsewhere you’ll spot Minecraft, The Last of Us, God of War, Skyrim, and Rainbow Six Siege.

The top-20 best-selling PlayStation games in the US ever, according to Circana senior director Mat Piscatella, are as follows.

Best-selling PlayStation games (all PlayStation platforms, US)

  1. Grand Theft Auto 5
  2. Minecraft
  3. Red Dead Redemption 2
  4. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)
  6. Marvel’s Spider-Man
  7. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War
  9. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022)
  11. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  12. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  13. The Last of Us
  14. God of War (2018)
  15. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
  16. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  17. Rainbow Six: Siege
  18. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
  19. Call of Duty: WW2
  20. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

The list changes when you re-order it according to dollars made. There are now 11 Call of Duty games in the top 20, though GTA 5 still leads and Red Dead Redemption 2 is now third. The older GTA games San Andreas and Vice City drop down, presumably as they were less monetised, as does the cheaper Minecraft. But Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man series gains a third entry with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 showing up in 18th.

The most welcome change to this list, though, is Guitar Hero 3 appearing in 10th – its income presumably buoyed by the expensive plastic pack-in guitar peripheral and buyable, downloadable song packs. I miss that series.

But that’s not all, stats fans! While spelunking in the archives, Piscatella dug up two other notable best-seller lists. One of them was for PlayStation 1 games only, which is relevant because it was the 30th anniversary of PS1 yesterday (9th September) in the US. And the other was for the best-selling Dreamcast games ever. Why? Because the Dreamcast was released on the same day, 9th September, albeit four years later than PS1, in 1999.

In the PS1 list we see the origins of some of PlayStation’s longest-running series, such as Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid – series I’m somewhat surprised not to see in the best-selling all-PlayStations list above. We also see Spyro doing well, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater doing well, and the Driver series doing well – which has since disappeared. The most recent game in that series was the somewhat overlooked Driver: San Francisco from 2011, in which you could body-shift from car to car. Also present: Final Fantasies 7 and 8, and Crash Team Racing.

The best-selling PS1 games of all time (Jan 1995 to July 2025) in the US are as follows.

  1. Gran Turismo 2

  6. Frogger (1997)
  7. Spyro the Dragon
  8. Crash Bandicoot
  9. Tekken 3
  10. Driver
  11. Final Fantasy 7
  12. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2
  13. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater

  16. CTR: Crash Team Racing
  17. WWE Warzone
  18. Driver 2
  19. Final Fantasy 8
  20. Spyro Dragon 2: Rage

On Dreamcast, meanwhile, we see an alarming amount of sports games. But besides them there are some absolute classics: Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi – I didn’t realise it was this popular. There’s SoulCalibur of course, Bass Fishing, Resi Code Veronica. What a console!
