Kids From The 2000s Rejoice, Icy Tower Is Coming Back

Icy Tower, the classic freeware platformer from the early 2000s that was a viral sensation back in the day, is returning via a new Steam release next year from the original creators. I’m so happy about that it makes me want to yell “Sweeeeet!” while cartwheeling wildly through the air.

On October 1, Icy Tower creators Johan Peitz and Anders “Neo” Svensson announced that the duo’s popular 2001 game Icy Tower is getting a remake. The plan is for this new version, which looks extremely faithful to the original game, to launch on Steam sometime in 2026. Here’s the trailer, which might activate some dormant part of your brain that contains all the memories you have of playing the original Icy Tower in a computer lab in middle school.

Here’s how the original creators describe this new, upcoming version of the classic platformer:

Icy Tower is the definitive arcade jumping game. Join Harold the Homeboy and his friends as they try to climb as high up as they possibly can in a mysterious tower. But one mistake and it is back to the beginning! With its simple pick-up-and-play appeal Icy Tower delivers a pure, compelling arcade fun. As the difficulty ramps up, the game will put your timing, precision, and nerves to the true test.

If you were under the age of 17 or so in the early 2000s and spent time online, there is a very good chance that you downloaded Icy Tower from Free Lunch Design and played it for many, many hours. The game’s simple controls, bouncy physics, and endless nature made it hard to put down. It also ran on even the crappiest computers, making it easy for anyone to play.

Icy Tower was completely free, too, and its file size was so small that people shared it from computer to computer. I’m not even sure how I stumbled upon it back in the early 2000s, but once I found it, my brother and I played way, way, way too much Icy Tower while dreaming of what was at the top of the tower. (It didn’t have an end you could reach, but we didn’t know that.) And sure, there were some ports and mobile spin-offs released over the years, but this looks to be the first real follow-up from the OG creators that perfectly captures the vibes of that first game.

And now, 25 years later (which makes me feel extremely old to write), Icy Tower is coming back and it looks great. I can’t wait to flip about for hours and hours when it launches in 2026. You can wishlist it now on Steam.

Epic confirms “no creative intentions” connecting controversial Fortnite emote with Peacemaker TV show

Epic is modifying a Peacemaker emote that was removed from Fortnite earlier this week due to its inclusion of controversial dance moves.

The removal came after the TV show’s most recent episode included a major twist. While the emote was added earlier in September, in retrospect the dance moves clearly imitate a swastika.

What made this more remarkable is that Warner Bros. and Epic agreed on the collaboration before the episode aired, but the Fortnite-maker seemingly wasn’t forewarned of the show’s twist.

In a new statement on social media, Epic has confirmed there were “no creative intentions” in linking the Peaceful Hips Emote to the storyline of the show.

However, it’s modifying the dance in next week’s update, though players are able to get a refund if preferred.

The statement in full reads: “We’ve worked closely with our partners at Warner Bros. Games to confirm there were no creative intentions to connect the Peaceful Hips Emote and the current Peacemaker storyline. To avoid any confusion, we’re modifying the Emote choreography in next week’s update. If they prefer, players can return the Emote without using a ticket.”

The Toasty Guy From Mortal Kombat Has Left The Series

After 30+ years, longtime Mortal Kombat audio director Dan Forden is no longer a part of the team working on the fighting series. The veteran game developer, famously known as the guy who pops up in the corner and yells “Toasty!” when uppercutting someone in a Mortal Kombat game, has left NetherRealm.

On October 2, as spotted by PC Gamer, Forden posted on Instagram that Wednesday was his last day at the WB-owned studio behind the Mortal Kombat franchise. Previously, Forden had worked at Midway Chicago, the predecessor to NetherRealm and the studio that originally developed the Mortal Kombat games. Forden has worked on every mainline entry in the franchise, starting with 1992’s Mortal Kombat all the way up to 2023’s Mortal Kombat 1.

He’s most famous for being the guy who popped up in the corner of the screen during fights in Mortal Kombat II and yelled “Toasty!” in a high-pitched voice. This Easter egg continued into nearly every subsequent game in the series, including some spin-offs and modern entries. Now, Toasty Dan, as he’s called online, has left behind the franchise he helped build over the last few decades.

“Wednesday was my last day at NetherRealm,” posted Forden on Instagram. “We made a lot of fun stuff over the years. I’m really proud of what we accomplished as well as how much fun we had making that stuff. There are so many smart, talented people there – look for more great things to emerge over the next several years.”

On Instagram, Forden shared a photo of what appears to be a bathroom inside the studio. And on the mirror inside the bathroom is a little sticker of him yelling his famous catchphrase as seen in MKII. Forden added that he “loved” these “little touches that people left around the studio.”

“I wouldn’t have lasted 37 years in the industry if fans weren’t out there playing the games we made,” said Forden. “Thanks to all of you for supporting what we’ve done. Live long and…Toasty!”

The 2024 edition of the Kindle Scribe won’t be the priciest model in the lineup for long. Earlier this week, Amazon revealed the next iteration for the hybrid ereader and note-taking device. The regular Kindle Scribe 2025 edition will start at $500 for a 32GB model with a front light. Both models are scheduled to launch before the end of the year. Nearly a third of all gaming PCs are still running Windows 10, even as Microsoft prepare to kill it

It must have been a stressful few days for Microsoft. Game Pass changes nobody likes, admitting the first Xbox-branded handheld costs a thousand bucks, having to tell the Israeli military that they need to see other people. Yeesh. No wonder they’re so intent on blowing off steam by taking a scythe to Windows 10 security updates this month, a move that will effectively end official support for the operating system.

With previous Windows version cutoffs, this would have been standard circle-of-life stuff. One system perishes, another is nourished with its bone meal. Except Windows 10 remains in use by millions of PC owners and players, mere days before its scheduled slaying on October 14th.

The exact proportion depends on who you ask, but it’s always a chunky one. The most recent Steam hardware survey puts Windows 10 usage at 32%, showing a strong affinity for the older OS even while most respondents (63%) are on Windows 11. Meanwhile, per The Register, Statcounter’s random sample of assorted web users suggests that just over 40% of all PCs have stuck with Windows 10. That’s barely behind the Windows 11 figure of 49%.

By comparison, Windows 8 and 8.1 merely accounted for 4% of PCs shortly before they had their security updates binned in January 2023, according to Statcounter. So there’s evidently something unusually compelling about Windows 10 – or, perhaps, something offputting about Windows 11 – that’s keeping it disproportionately popular in its final hours. I’ll attest to that, actually. While, as current custodian of the RPS Rig, I’ve long had it running the latest version, I remain too accustomed to the Win10 interface to budge from it on my personal PC.

Sadly, there’s more to this than UI comparisons and market share pie charts. As The Reg point out, it’s one thing to leave unpatched security vulnerabilities on a handful of weirdo Windows 8 holdouts, and another thing entirely to wilfully put millions upon millions of Windows 10 users at risk. For an example of the kind of weakness that would go unfixed, this past June, Microsoft were forced to close a Secure Boot vulnerability that would allow malware wielders to disable your PC’s other security tools before seizing control of the OS. That’s the same Secure Boot, of course, that Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 are making a mandatory system requirement.

There may be other, less dire but more widely-spread consequences, too. Capcom, for instance, recently warned that multiple recent Monster Hunter games might cease to work on Windows 10 after the 14th.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see a last-minute tilt towards Windows 11, as users realise they’ve run out of procrastination time. I’ll be switching over myself, though that’s mainly because I use this rig for work and Ian Games Network said I had to. If you’re determined to stand by Windows 10, the closest thing to a concession that Microsoft will offer is the Windows 10 ESU (Extended Security Updates) programme, where you can get a year of extra updates for free, no strings attached, if you live in the European Economic Area. If not, you can still enrol by either a) backing up your Windows 10 PC, b) spending 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, whatever those are, or c) just bunging Microsoft your local equivalent of $30 USD in cash. No, that is not a joke. Well, in a sense it is. Just not the funny kind.

Capcom wants Resident Evil Requiem boss battles to test your wits rather than your shooting skill

Capcom has said it’s looking more to the original Resident Evil games for ideas about how to challenge players with boss battles in the ninth Resident Evil game, Requiem.

Specifically, game director Koshi Nakanishi said he wants to test your wits rather than shooting ability.

“Of course there will be boss battles,” Nakanishi told Automaton. “However, rather than defeating enemies in a flashy manner as you progress through the game, like in games that emphasise gun shooting action, the style is more like Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, where players expand their exploration area in a closed space and overcome obstacles using their wits.”

The game’s new protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, is central to this. Unlike Leon Kennedy, she isn’t a veteran killer with hardened nerves, so she won’t immediately be capable of gunning down hordes of undead. Nakanishi has said before that Leon Kennedy is “actually quite a bad match for horror”. So unlike Kennedy, Ascroft will start the game as quite defenceless. But she will learn.

“One thing that’s so appealing about the Resident Evil series is that characters who are initially terrified grow stronger as they gain experience in extreme situations,” Nakanishi said. “Grace is scared at first, but the situation eventually causes her to snap, and she becomes able to fight her enemies.”

We had a chance to sit down with Nakanishi at Gamescom to talk about pacing. Alex thinks Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is one of the best-paced entries in the series, and Nakanishi directed that game as well. “My approach is the same this time…” Nakanishi said, before launching into a longer explanation.

Resident Evil Requiem launches at the beginning of next year, on 27th February.

OpenAI Boldly Uses Copyrighted Characters Like Pikachu In Sora 2

Generative AI continues to plague every creative industry you care about, and despite the obvious copyright infringement and legal cases that surround it, companies like OpenAI keep training their models on licensed art. Sora, OpenAI’s video generation model, launched its updated “Sora 2” model on September 30. The app trains itself on copyrighted material by default, with the burden on copyright holders to actively opt out of it. As a result, there’s a lot of AI-generated slop leaking out onto the internet featuring huge characters you know and love.

404 Media has some videos of Pikachu and what appears to be a Nazi version of SpongeBob SquarePants doing everything from ASMR to boxing matches. By default, Sora 2 can generate animated videos of almost any copyrighted material you prompt it with because genAI companies seem to think the rules governing how copyright IP is typically handled don’t apply to them. So now, companies like Nickelodeon and Nintendo will have to hit OpenAI up to tell the company to stop using their characters and iconography, rather than the other way around. It’s a bold strategy considering that Disney, NBC, and Warner Bros. are all suing Midjourney for using characters from their IP. Artists who work on the Magic: The Gathering card game have also sued Midjourney for scraping their artwork to train the generative AI model.

The Pokémon Company may not be taking immediate action against the Department of Homeland Security for using its characters in a video posted to social media, but I can’t imagine the litigious company is going to sit by while Pikachu’s image is used in AI slop that puts the mascot in a bad light. We’ve reached out to The Pokémon Company, Supergiant Games, and Toei Animation about their respective characters appearing in videos generated by the app.

On top of the slop featuring copyrighted characters, Sora 2 seems to let people make deepfakes of themselves or public figures. The new app has a TikTok-like feed that lets you endlessly scroll through the generated videos, and if you scroll long enough, you might see deepfakes of real people, despite OpenAI claiming it has safeguards in place to protect people from this. Some have even reported seeing some wild shit, like a blackface version of actor Scarlett Johansson performing in the musical Hamilton. OpenAI notably got into legal hot water with the actor last year when the company was using a voice that sounded very similar to her performance as an AI in the movie Her for its own ChatGPT AI chatbot.

The entire thing seems like a series of legal battles in the making, but it also has some artists and animators disheartened as the possibility looms that animation companies may be increasingly inclined to use it to cut costs at the expense of a human touch.

Personally, I think that even if these videos look better than they did a year ago, they still look like shit. Even the more fluid, action-packed scenes Sora generates still have clear tells of AI generation, like unnatural shifts and glitches in the animation. But for any who hope to use this to cut costs, quality is probably not a priority. Bigwigs who insist that AI is the future only do so because they’re the ones who stand to benefit from it, while the artists who create and the people who enjoy their work get the short end of the stick. Maybe some of IP lawyers will step in and try to put a stop to it all, but it sometimes feels like every time one AI slop machine gets taken down, another one sprouts up in its place.

Disco Elysium devs at ZA/UM form the UK industry’s “first recognised videogame workplace union”

Videogame developers at Disco Elysium studio ZA/UM have founded what they’re calling “the first recognised workplace union in the UK games industry”, operating as part of the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain. It’s yet another twist in the tale of a once-feted development studio who are now heavily associated with toxic layoffs, alleged fraud and diasporic feuding.

“The recognition process provides workers and management with a strong framework to engage and negotiate on workplace-related matters,” the unionised workers announce in a press release, passed along by Game Developer. “A committee of elected workplace representatives will regularly meet to discuss matters brought forward by the game developers at ZA/UM and management, with the support of union officials.”

The press release notes the past couple of year’s staggering quantity of mass layoffs, commenting that “job security [is] one of the union’s central focuses”. It includes thoughts from Eugenia Peruzzo, organising officer of the IWGB Game Workers Union, who comments that “recognition agreements lay the groundwork for a healthy relationship between the company and workers and rebalance the scale of powers after a few terrible years for the game industry and the redundancies we have seen happening at ZA/UM lately.” Peruzzo is confident that more UK videogame workers will unionise. “Rest assured that this is not a one off, but this is an avalanche in the making,” she says.

There’s a much fuller write-up of the situation on GamesIndustry.biz, which includes an interview with current ZA/UM president and Private Division co-founder Ed Tomaszewski. He observes of studio management’s negotiations with the emerging union “that when we did talk about it, it was clear that recognising a union was core to our values as a studio, to be providing fair working practices.”

In the GI piece, Tomaszewski also pushes back a little against some of the accusations or “characterisations” levelled at ZA/UM by certain former staff. I imagine that said former staff will be pushing back against Tomaszewski in turn.

ZA/UM have lost many of the people who made Disco Elysium a hit, but according to Game Developer, they now have “almost 100” people on the books after laying off a quarter of the studio and cancelling a Disco Elysium expansion early last year. Their current project is Zero Parades, a colourful espionage CRPG James summarised as “Disco Elysium in glasses and a moustache”, adding that “it isn’t always clear whether Zero Parades is inspired by Disco Elysium or beholden to it.”

Many of the departed Disco Elysium staff are now working on spiritual successors of one kind or another. Over at Summer Eternal, several former ZA/UM staff including writers Argo Tuulik and Dora Klindžić are making Red Rooster, which was recently teased in curious book anthology form. Longdue Games are making Hopetown, a psychogeogratuitous RPG which Nic summarised as “Nathan Barley on the bus”; their trueblood Disco complement includes ZA/UM’s co-founder Martin Luiga, plus Piotr Sobolewski from outsourcing team Knights of Unity. Dark Math Games boast of former Disco motion graphic designer Timo Albert and former ZA/UM producer and investor Kaur Kender; they’re making the recently renamed Tangerine Antarctic, which has a “dopamine buffet”.

I offer this summary to the next RPS staffer to write about ZA/UM-related matters, in frail hope that the situation won’t be anymore complicated by then. Oh god, I’ve just remembered we haven’t yet found out what former Disco writer Robert Kurvitz and artist Aleksander Rostov are making at their new outfit Red Info.
