A New PlayStation Presentation, Possibly A State Of Play, Is Coming Next Week – Report

by admin September 16, 2025

Sony is reportedly prepping a new PlayStation event for next week, according to reliable leaker NateTheHate2. However, it’s not clarified whether this could be a State of Play or Showcase, though there hasn’t been a version of the latter in over two years at this point.

The last two PlayStation State of Play events have each focused on a single game. The July presentation put the spotlight on first-party exclusive Ghost of Yotei, while earlier this month, Sony showed off the James Bond title 007: First Light from Hitman developer IO Interactive. If this recent report pans out, that would mean two major PlayStation events in one month. At the start of September, NateTheHate2 nailed when the latest Nintendo Direct would happen.

Now Playing: Marvel’s Wolverine | PlayStation Showcase 2021

One game that could be featured at the possible PlayStation event next week is Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games. On top of past rumblings about its appearance, a new report from MP1st states that Marvel’s Wolverine is slated to arrive in 2026. The game was first announced in 2021.

Other prospects for popping up include Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet from Naughty Dog, Saros from Returnal developer Housemarque, or any number of third-party titles. So far this year, Sony has held five different PlayStation State of Play events. Keep in mind the company hasn’t officially announced anything yet.

I was terrified of answering the door before playing this freaky-faced apocalyptic horror, and honestly it hasn’t helped

by admin September 16, 2025

They took him! They took the butt ugly bloke who was squatting in the bathroom! The one who kept insisting that the sun’s burning heat was cleansing the Earth of sin and, totally unconnected from that I assume, was divorced. Those hazmat-suited fiends! I ought to give them a piece of my mind.

I bloody well will do, just as soon as I’ve worked out who’s turned two of my other guests into neatly arranged bin bags of dead parts. My suspicions are firmly lodged at the feet of the toothless and fish-faced nun who ended up the only one in that room left alive, and my trigger finger’s itchy.

These are thoughts that may end up going through your mind as you play No, I’m Not a Human, a paranoia-fuelled horror game that developers Trioskaz released into the world yesterday, September 15th. I’ve finally got around to firing up the trusty RPS press account today and giving its first hour or so a go. Thus far, it’s got me thouroughly freaked, when I’m not roaring with laughter at just how wacky some of its characters have purposefully been made to look.

If you want an idea of what I mean, check out the collage of images further down. In the meantime, to set the scene, here’s the synopsis offered by the game’s Steam page:

Sunrise. Twilight of Earth. The world is ending. Acrid auromas of sun-scorched streets fill the air. Blackened corpses gnarled into shapes of agony line streets. Peering outside is enough to scorch eyes from the socket. The only refuge is in the night. But the night belongs to the Visitors. A knock on the door. A solitary voice, begging for refuge. They look like us. Talk like us. Smell like us. Are they us? Look for the signs.

As you can tell, it’s very much sunshine and rainbows stuff. You’re a faceless person living alone, in a house with the sort of perfectly eerie atmos you can only achieve by having someone’s grandparents consult on your decor. The sun is doing a thing, so everyone’s been forced to become nocturnal and remain indoors. That’s where the Visitors come in. They’re Lovecraftian creatures said to emerged from underground, equipped with the ability to almost perfectly mirror being human and an insatiable desire to sit on your sofa.

You probably shouldn’t do what I did: let everyone in regardless of how much they look like creepy deformed putty. That is, unless you want to wake up to a notification iniforming you that it smells like someone died last night. In an effort to try and stop that from happening, you’ve got to use up your limited energy during the day to check the guests you’ve let in for apparent signs of being a Visitor you hear via the TV or radio. Stuff like having perfectly white teeth, bloodshot eyes, or muck under their fingernails. As you can imagine, the game has fun with all of these would-be symptoms of visitordom being things any regular person might have.

So far, I’ve managed to successfully identify and blow the head off of one Visitor, as well as ruthlessly execute a couple of people who must, in hindsight, have just been regular weirdos. There’s a wonderfully foreboding anticipation to waking up each night and hearing the knock that signals the start of a parade of new guests to consider letting in, though it might be better if their arrivals were a bit more spaced out, rather than one person rocking up the moment another leaves. The sense of isolation as the game gradually feeds you scraps of info from the outside world is quite absorbing too.

I also wish No, I’m Not a Human would let me save more freely. You can do so by downing bottles of khombucha, but you only get one to start off with, meaning that if you drink that early, you can easily lose a bunch of progress. I need that progress, Trioskaz. I need to see if the hazmat fiends will return my unsightly loo-dwelling sun-worshipper.

No, I’m Not a Human is out now on Steam, priced at discounted £11.51/$13.49/€13.31 until September 29th.

The Mac Mini is an interesting little product. You get a full Mac computer but for significantly less than a MacBook or the iMac. So long as you got a screen to connect it to, you’re good to go. The 2024 Mac Mini powered by the M4 chip normally goes for $599, but right now Amazon has the miniature desktop Mac for $100 off. That 17% discount brings the price down to just $499.

That’s the starting price. The model down to $499 during this limited time deal comes with 16GB of RAM and an 256GB SSD. For $690, you can double your storage to 512GB.  For $904, you can get the model with 24GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Apple has redesigned the Mac Mini with this 2024 iteration. The footprint is less than half the size of the previous design, measuring in at five by five by two inches. It fits comfortably on any desktop, taking up hardly any space at all. It’s carbon footprint is even smaller. Thanks to the ultracompact design, the Mac Mini is Apple’s first carbon neutral Mac.

A handful of connection options are conveniently found along the front and back of the Mac Mini. You get three thunderbolt ports, two front-facing USB-C ports, an HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet ports, and the headphone jack. That one may no longer be on our iPhones, but lives on at our desks.

With the M4 chipset, you can expect snappy and fluid performance in any of these applications. You can copy something from your iPhone and paste it on your Mac. Access you messages or answer FaceTime calls from either device.

Best Grow A Garden Mutations

by admin September 16, 2025

Mutations are the key to making your fortune in Grow A Garden. Each one makes plants more valuable, while pets gain the ability to convert plants or other animals into the mutated variant. Therefore, if you want to make a lot of money quickly, you’ll need these mutations or ways to manipulate the odds and get these multipliers easily.

Discovering which are the best Grow a Garden mutations is a huge reason why everyone is playing this Roblox game every day. But where do you start? We’ll go over everything you should know in advance about all the mutations available in Grow A Garden. These range from which ones you should focus on getting to start with, to why events are so valuable, and which pets give you the mutation with the highest multiplier.

Combining mutations turns an otherwise worthless strawberry into a fruit worth hundreds of thousands of Sheckles.

The best Grow A Garden mutations

The best Grow a Garden mutations are:

  • Shocked
  • Paradisal
  • Celestial
  • Dawnbound
  • Sundried
  • Frozen
  • Zen
  • Corrupt
  • Disco
  • Meteoric

Obviously, the best Grow A Garden mutations are the ones that give you the highest multiplier bonus for selling the affected plants at the shop. For example, Shocked, Paradisal, Celestial, and Dawnbound all give the highest increase of values available in the base game without any events. However, they’re also the most difficult to obtain as they require either luck for the plant to be hit by lightning or meteors, combining even rarer weather effects, or submitting sunflowers to a god that rarely appears. Pets with the Ascended mutation give plants a whopping 150 times their value, but you’ll rarely, if ever, see them.

As for the more commonly available base game weather events, Heat Wave weather gives Sundried mutations, which have a massive 85x multiplier. They’re rare, but only require the Heat Wave weather to be in effect to apply to your crops or pets. The rates do drop significantly from here, though a Frozen crop gives 10 times the value of the base crop and is relatively easy to get, provided a Wet or Drenched plant is subjected to a Frost weather effect. Sushi Bears also grant plants the Frozen effect.

Your best bet is to focus on the event-only weather conditions and unlocking the associated pet. Obtaining the animal companion requires a lot of investment of time and resources, completing event quests, and eventually buying the egg to stand a chance to hatch the correct critter. Some events also trigger effects, such as the Zen update’s Zen and Corrupt weather, which automatically converted plants and gave them an extra 20 times their overall value. The most valuable event pets in the game are the Disco Bee and the Lobster Thermidor, as they have a chance to affect your crops with the Disco and Meteoric mutations, respectively, granting affected plants 125 times their value.

Even something as simple as the humble carrot can become somewhat valuable when it’s made of gold.

Palworld will emerge from early access in 2026, with a “truly massive” amount of stuff planned for 1.0 update

by admin September 16, 2025

Palworld is set to finally emerge from early access in 2026, developers Pocketpair have announced. There’s a lot of work the game about not-Pokémon, guns, and maunfacturing will need prior to that point, say the studio who’ve been busy staring down Lionel Hutzes who probably know the DK rap off by heart. They’ve also teased that a bunch of new additions are in the works for the 1.0 update.

Watch on YouTube

“While we have a lot of ideas for where we want to take Palworld, we also need to start thinking about Palworld 1.0,” Pocketpair communications director and publishing manager John ‘Bucky’ Buckley said in the above video announcement. “Beyond just adding new content there’s a lot of cleanup that needs to be done before Palworld can exit early access.

“It’s no secret that Palworld has a lot of quirks and jank, and we want to take the time to properly address those before releasing the game. With that in mind, we plan to start that cleanup this year. Our goal is to ultimately release Palworld next year, in 2026, and we think taking the time now to fix those problems will ultimately lead to a better game.”

As a result, the studio plans to be “a little quiet” for the rest of 2025, with the survival game’s winter update not set to be as chunky as the Feybreak or v0.4 update it got last December. That said, Buckley did still indicate “a few surprises” are planned for that winter update.

The big tease-a-thon continued, with the community manager declaring that a “truly massive amount of content” is in the works for the 1.0 update that’ll bring Palworld out of the early access cocoon it’s occupied since January last year. “We plan to share some sneak peeks about Palworld 1.0 in the very near future,” he concluded.

Amid releasing updates including the likes of crossplay and a Terarria collab so far this year, Pocketpair have been getting a publishing arm up and running. Horror game Dead Take from Tales Of Kenzera: ZAU devs Surgent Studios and retro-handheld-inspired angler Normal Fishing are among the titles the studio have helped release or signed up so far. All while Mario gives them the evils from a window across the road. Make sure to give our Katherine’s review of early access Palworld a read if you’re keen to be reminded what it’s all about.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Switch 2 is a game key card that’ll fill a third of your console’s storage space

by admin September 16, 2025

The physical release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Switch 2 will be on a game key card and will take up around a third of the console’s storage capacity.

Some Switch 2 physical games are sold as game key cards, which use the card solely as a key to download the full game. Many third-party publishers are opting for this method of release on Nintendo’s new console.

Images of the game box on Square Enix’s store prove Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be another game key card release, while its eShop listing states it requires a download of up to 90GB. As the Switch 2’s storage capacity is 256GB, that means the game will take up approximately 34 percent (though of course you’ll need to account for console system files).

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade – Release Date Announcement – Nintendo Switch 2Watch on YouTube

The reported maximum size for a proper game card is 64GB, which is the card size CD Projekt Red opted for with its Cyberpunk 2077 release on Switch 2. But at 90GB, Square Enix’s game wouldn’t fit.

Indeed, the huge size of games is exactly the reason Nintendo offers game key cards as an option, but this has been heavily criticised by game preservationists. Nintendo even released a survey to gather reactions.

So what’s the alternative solution here? Should Square Enix be to blame for its decision and/or inability to reduce the game size? Or is Nintendo to blame for not offering larger game cards?

Larger game cards would be more expensive for publishers, while a higher console capacity would be more expensive for Nintendo who seems more than happy to let consumers choose to expand storage space through expensive MicroSD Express cards – this now looking pretty essential if you plan on playing triple-A third-party games on the Switch 2.

One developer at Ubisoft did explain why it opted for a game key card with Star Wars Outlaws on Switch 2, stating traditional cards “simply didn’t give the performance we needed at the quality target we were going for”. The game was built around the SSDs of release platforms and as such it “relies heavily on disk streaming for its open world environments”.

Perhaps Square Enix has a similar reason.

Still, Square Enix has confirmed the entire Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is headed to Switch 2. And considering second game Rebirth is 145GB on PS5, there’s no way you’ll be able to play all three games on your Switch 2 in future without opting to expand the memory.

A trolley problem for the ages.

Don’t Bring Me Trolley Problems, Bring Me Trolley Solutions

by admin September 16, 2025

We’re all familiar with the trolley problem. We’re all so familiar with it that we’re also familiar with all the spoofs of the trolley problem that have sprung up in recent years. But I’m pleased to say I’ve found a fresh take on the entire scenario: even sillier (if smarter) spoofs of the trolley problem. The Trolley Solution brings the classic black-and-white sketches to life in a series of video game vignettes, beginning with the classic question, but quickly descending into fantastically funny nonsense, including some completely splendid mini-games, one of which is a visual novel love story.

You know how the trolley problem goes:

“A trolley is rapidly approaching five people tied to the tracks.

You have the option to divert the trolley onto a different track.

This action would save the five people, but it would kill someone else.

What would you do?”

But in The Trolley Solution, the classic philosophical dilemma and many absurd riffs on it are brought to life in 3D, bringing a whole new level of reality to the hypothetical problem when the crudely animated people splatter into little blobs. What if, for instance, rerouting the trolley would knock a dog’s bone away? Can you really make the choice if it means watching the little doggy look into his empty bowl, his tail down, his head despondently hung? Other new variants it introduces on the classic dilemma are more elaborate and wonderfully original, unlike anything I’ve seen in those overly long Reddit threads where people with undue confidence misattribute philosophical doctrine. For instance,

“A trolley is quickly approaching your girlfriend, who is tied to the tracks.

You have the option to divert the trolley to a different track, but on that track is your best friend, also tied up.

However, you discover that your girlfriend has been cheating on you with your best friend.

But your best friend didn’t know she was your girlfriend.

To complicate things, your best friend is terminally ill and will die of cancer in a month.

What will you do?”

Honestly, I’m simple enough that I’d have been charmed just by a series of increasingly daft scenarios like these, especially since you get to see each play out, choosing whether to pull the lever or not. But The Trolley Solution is much more ambitious in its daftness. Levels constantly introduce one-off mechanics, at one point seeing the game turn into a perfect spoof of the billions of monochrome “hidden object” games that appeared in the wake of the fantastic Hidden Folks, here with an entire trolley “hiding” in enormous, screens-wide illustrations packed with visual gags. I scarequote “hiding” given it’s a trolley, and even glasses and a Where’s Waldo hat can’t quite do it. Bless it, it’s trying. (The Where’s Trolley joke works much better in the UK where the books are called Where’s Wally?)

At another point it becomes a third-person racing game, as you jump between tracks to gather coins and avoid oncoming trolleys. And yes, in one extended and completely brilliant sequence, the game becomes a lampooning visual novel, in which you play a young Japanese girl who, on her way to school, falls in love with a trolley. It has many different endings, one of which describes the situation where the girl and the trolley rush too quickly into an overly committed romance, later realizing the foundations for a lasting relationship had never been established, the two growing to loathe one another, before finally, acrimoniously, breaking up. Another, naturally, results in people getting run over by a trolley. It’s all very romantic. It contains dialogue like,

“Tameko tells Tomodachi all about her dream. As she talks a weird gut feeling makes her uneasy. She explains the nuances of picking between Deontology and Utilitarianism. It feels like there is something more to it, like a prophecy in the making…”

As much as I want to blurt out every single surprise game mode that appears, l obviously won’t, but I do have to share one more: There’s an entire Tamagotchi sim in there, in which—yes of course—you must feed, clean, and play with a young trolley until it grows into a happy and profitable adult. “Can you take care of it until it gains monetary and moral stability?” asks the game.

It’s worth saying The Trolley Solution is not taking anything seriously, and you’re going to see a lot of people get squished in front of trolleys. Because the game’s black and white, and because the human characters are like even simpler Human Fall Flat figures, obviously it’s nothing outlandish, but people sure do go splat when they’re run over. And you will want to note that it does include a moment with someone jumping in front of a trolley. When that happened I shouted, “GOD DAMN IT!” and laughed very hard, because it really wasn’t OK in the best way.

I swear, for all the stuff I’ve mentioned, there are so many more surprises in here. There are whole other short games, spoofs of well-known genres I’m dying to tell you about, and while a few of these are perhaps a little over-long (something done five times can be a lot more fun than something done ten times), they’re all so well-realized and funny. There’s a total of 40 levels, each containing its own unique trolley problem situation, and precisely none of them take the conceit seriously. Thank goodness.

I love stumbling on a game like this. I installed it simply because I liked the cartoon art, having no idea where it was heading. It turns out it was heading all over the place, with a wicked sense of humor, and the chops to pull off half a dozen genre spoofs along the way. (And don’t worry if you see the DLC on the Steam store—as much as you can absolutely buy it (and the developer deserves it!), it’s part of a gag.)

What a joyfully silly thing to exist. You should go buy it right now, it’s only $6.50.

Spider-Man Magic: The Gathering Set Restocked Ahead Of Next Week’s Launch

by admin September 16, 2025

Spider-Man swings into the Magic: The Gathering universe next week in the latest crossover set. Most of the MTG Spider-Man products have been sold out since preorders opened back in March, but Amazon has restocked the Marvel’s Spider-Man Play Booster Box and is offering a discount. Normally $209.70, the 30-pack Booster Box is available to preorder for $192 ahead of the Spider-Man set’s September 26 release.

If you’re interested in picking up the Marvel’s Spider-Man Bundle, the Gift Bundle, or Spidey’s Spectacular Showdown Scene Box, we’d recommend checking the links below frequently. Amazon has restocked all three recently. Unfortunately, these Spider-Man MTG products never remain in stock for very long, which isn’t surprising since this is a crossover set starring arguably the most popular superhero in the world.

Magic: The Gathering x Marvel’s Spider-Man:

Take a closer look at all of the upcoming Spider-Man Magic: The Gathering TCG products below. If you’re still looking for cards from Magic’s exceedingly popular Final Fantasy crossover, check out our Final Fantasy x Magic: The Gathering restock tracker. At the time of writing, Amazon has the Starter Kit in stock for $20 and deals on the Commander Decks. You can even get the Commander Deck Bundle for a massive $110 discount that drops the price to $170 (was $280). We’ve rounded up more Magic: The Gathering TCG crossover sets at the bottom of this story, including Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is slated to launch November 21.

$192 (was $209.70)

Magic: The Gathering’s Spider-Man Play Booster Box includes 30 packs. With Amazon’s current preorder discount, you’re saving close to $20. In total, you’ll get 420 Spider-Man-themed MTG cards in each Play Booster Box.

Here’s the breakdown of the card types you’ll pull in each 14-card pack. Each pack also includes a non-foil double-sided token.

  • 6–7 Commons
  • 3 Uncommons
  • 1 Wildcard of any rarity
  • 1 Rare or Mythic Rare
  • 1 Traditional Foil Card of any rarity
  • 1 Basic Land
  • 0–1 MAR

$42

Spidey’s Spectacular Showdown Scene Box includes three Marvel’s Spider-Man booster packs as well as two different sets of six scene cards. You’ll get six Traditional Foil Borderless Scene Cards that you can use when playing the card game. The artwork on those cards is also found on six Art-Only Scene Cards. The art cards aren’t playable, but the Scene Box comes with a display easel to showcase the artwork. Together, the six cards form a cohesive scene featuring Spider-Man and a handful of Marvel villains.

Here are the Scene Cards you’ll find in the box alongside your display easel and trio of booster packs:

  • Grasping Tentacles
  • Venom, Deadly Devourer
  • Green Goblin, Nemesis
  • Doc Ock, Evil Inventor
  • Sensational Spider-Man
  • Pumpkin Bombs

$70

The Marvel’s Spider-Man Bundle has been difficult to find since preorders for the set opened in early March. This isn’t too surprising since MTG Bundles come with nine booster packs valued at $63 as well as numerous other goodies, including a promo art card, a Spidey-themed storage box, and everything you need to start building your deck to play the trading card game.

Here’s the full list of items included in the Marvel’s Spider-Man Bundle:

  • 9 booster packs (14 cards each)
  • 30 Basic Land Cards (15 Foil, 15 Non-foil)
  • 1 Traditional Foil Alternate-Art Promo Card
  • 2 Reference Cards
  • 1 Spindown Life Counter
  • 1 Spider-Man Storage Box

$90

The $90 Gift Bundle has largely been sold out since preorders opened, but Amazon has restocked it numerous times. The only problem is these restocks always seem to sell out in minutes, so you really need to get lucky.

The Gift Bundle comes with everything that’s in the regular bundle as well as a Collector Booster Pack with 15 Rare, Foil, and Special Treatment cards. Another cool aspect is the box itself. The Gift Bundle recreates the cover of Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962), the first appearance of Spider-Man.

  • 1 Collector Booster Pack (15 cards)
  • 9 Booster Packs (14 cards each)
  • 30 Basic Land Cards (15 Foil, 15 Non-foil)
  • 1 Traditional Foil Alternate-Art Promo Card
  • 2 Reference Cards
  • 1 Spindown Life Counter
  • 1 Spider-Man Storage Box

$40

Magic: The Gathering Collector Booster Packs are geared more toward enthusiast collectors, but these expensive boosters typically include some very cool foil cards. The $40 Collector Booster features 15 cards and an art card or traditional foil double-sided token:

  • 5 Traditional Foil Commons
  • 4 Traditional Foil Uncommons
  • 1 Traditional Foil Basic Land
  • 1 Traditional Foil Rare or Mythic Rare
  • 2 Non-foil Booster Fun Rare or Mythic Rare cards
  • 1 MAR card
  • 1 Traditional Foil Booster Fun Rare or Mythic Rare

$430

The Collector Booster Box comes with 12 of the $40 Collector Booster Packs detailed above. Though prices have varied–we’ve seen $430-$455–you’re likely to “save” by buying the pricey packs by the dozen versus individually. That said, just like the Collector Booster Pack, this has been sold out for months.

Amazon also has products from a few older Magic: The Gathering crossover sets in stock. Notably, retailer recently restocked Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Commander Decks. Two of the four have sold out, but you can you can still get Riders of Rohan and Elven Council Commander Decks for $50 or less.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Commander Decks:

Battlefield 6 beta's rush mode gets a balancing tweak with EA monitoring the situation, amid player complaints about battle bigness
Game Updates

Is 128 players too much for a multiplayer FPS? Yes, says Battlefield 6

by admin September 16, 2025

Battlefield 2042 supported 128 player matches at launch in 2021. Battlefield 6 will support 64 player matches, when it launches on 10th October this year. Some mistake here, surely? Battlefield 6 is a sequel to Battlefield 2042, and sequels are supposed to have More. If I have just given voice to your innermost thoughts, then I fear it is time to bamboozle and horrify you with the nightmare-physics of the arcane game design proverb, “sometimes, less is more”.

“But how can this be?” you shriek, as the ground crumbles and the walls peel away. Matter cannot increase and decrease simultaneously! A “+1” cannot be a “-1”! You reach for the whiskey bottle in a frenzy, but it is too late to unlearn this awful knowledge. Anyway, stop screaming so I can treat you to another morsel of insight from Battlefield 6 design director Shashank Uchil. I promise this one won’t hurt quite as much.

“We thought larger player numbers would work – it just didn’t catch on,” Uchil said to Edge Magazine in recent reflections about Battlefield 2042’s higher headcount, as passed along by the magazine’s jovial e-buddies at Gamesradar.

“It’s like when a band tries a new sound,” Uchil continued. “Because we like it, but then players don’t – and in the end, we are subservient to the players. We do what the players want.” I feel “subservient” is perhaps a bit much, Mr Uchil. Please do not encourage your players to think that they’re pharaohs. How many pyramids did the pharaohs build, all by themselves? Exactly.

As digested by GR, Uchil added that “Battlefield players are very vocal” and will “tell you what they want” as regards the new shooter. Definite deer-in-headlight vibes. The devs “all read the Reddit,” Uchil added, because it’s “the number-one source, and all of us are on there.” All of which continues the well-established EA marketing theme of trying to get 2042 haters on-board with Battlefield 6, which is designed to evoke the better moments of Battlefield 3.

I like thinking about how many players is too much in first-person shooters. The question of player count is obviously part of a larger set of questions about map design and size, mode design, weapon balancing, and so forth. Generally speaking, when I’m pinned down by a bombardment in a Battlefield game, it absolutely feels like there are 127 other players out there, because those artillery impacts are so very loud.

By contrast, I remember playing Resistance 2 on PlayStation 3, which boasted then-mindblowing 60 player headcounts, and finding that the flagship multiplayer mode’s objective structure had the effect of making it feel like a bunch of asynchronous deathmatches. We’d pass queues of enemy players hurrying in the other direction and just sort of wave acknowledgement, like passing bus drivers.

Back in 2021, Ed Thorn (RPS in peace) had similar thoughts about Battlefield 2042. He found that it rarely felt like a 128-player game at all. “I’m not sure I notice the bump in bodies,” Ed wrote in his review. “Sure, things are chaotic, but the maps are so vast to make up for it that the pockets of violence remain similar to previous, smaller entries in the series.”

The obvious tentpole game to invoke here is Planetside 2, proudest of the surviving MMO shooters. I had a go at unravelling PlanetSide 2’s accomplishment in January 2024. Amongst other things, I argued that the vast periphery of each emergent battle makes for a surprisingly good walking simulator. But enough of my wittering. How many players do you consider too many players, inasmuch as such things can be interpreted out of context?
