“GTA for kids” has arrived on Xbox Game Pass, and it’s a delightful example of how to treat a younger audience with respect

“Kids are quite discerning, actually,” says someone who has never really spent any time with kids, and perhaps doesn’t even know what a child is. My experience with kids has revealed that, no, they aren’t discerning at all. They are happy to watch absolute drivel, demand to be bought ‘toys’ that are little more than sludge, and dress in whatever triple-stained clothes they’ve been wearing for the last week. So, when a game is labelled as an imitation of a huge franchise, but “for kids”, my quality alarm sounds and I expect the worst.

Wobbly Life

Enter Wobbly Life, launched into early access on Steam five years ago, and a year later on Xbox. It’s technically a “GTA for kids”, yes, if you simply don’t want to use many words due to being chronically lazy or rushed – but this would actually be doing a quite wonderful game a massive injustice. It’s essentially an open, knockabout world of activities and exploration, playable by up to four players cooperatively, with a focus squarely on physics, laughs and fun.

As a ‘gamer’ parent (I do know quite a lot about video games, contrary to what people on message boards might say) to an 11-year-old and a four-year-old, I’m immediately narked when a game designed for kids fails to give that audience an ounce of respect. Yes, games for young players should be simpler to grasp, but that’s no excuse to make them buggy, dull, tiresome messes. A lot of these games feel like they are exploiting loved brands for a quick buck, but Wobbly Life couldn’t be trying harder to offer an experience that keeps on delivering.

Over the five years since its initial early access release Wobbly Life has seen update after update, adding new areas, new jobs, new missions, new vehicles, new activities… new pretty much everything. Now on its 1.0 release, on Game Pass (as well as all major platforms), I honestly don’t think there is a better game for kids to mess around with. Part job sim, part life sim, part go into space sim (thanks to the latest update), you might one moment be taking a job delivering newspapers via a nifty truck equipped with a paper shooter, then buying that new house you’ve always dreamed of, then jetting off into space to see what adventures await.

I’ve watched my son play Wobbly Life aged seven to 11, and this game simply has the juice. What this juice is made of is hard to pinpoint, but I think the key ingredient is a commitment to quality. None of the activities, missions, or jobs here are detailed enough to stand on their own, but they do just enough and let kids fill in the blanks. Kids are great at this (my daughter likes to pretend she is an assortment of doughs, then jumps into an invisible oven to bake, the only real-life prop being the dings I make to signify the time is up). You can be a farmer here, not like in Farming Sim, but how a child sees being a farmer, and it’s perfect.

While the big hitters on Roblox bring in an obscene number of players, have you actually seen what the majority of these games are like? Busywork and clicking with the only goal being to accrue enough currency to buy the next macguffin, to allow you to do even more busywork and clicking to buy that same mcguffin, but bigger. The actual gameplay within these games is so narrow it simply funnels kids down these content tunnels, always offering a new carrot tied to an increasingly dazzling stick, with the added peril of premium currency to shortcut that drudgery.

Wobbly Life doesn’t care about what players are doing or how. Developer RubberBandGames just keeps on throwing more and more toys into the playpen, then sits back and lets the kids get on with it. I’ve heard my son squeal with joy while playing (often online with friends), and the core gameplay is simple enough for any family member to jump in and have a good time. The fact that this game has 14,500 English reviews on Steam and is currently sat on “Overwhelmingly Positive” says it all.

If there’s any justice in the world of game development (and given the state of job security in this industry, I am leaning towards there not being any), RubberBandGames received a bumper-sized truck full of cash for putting its wonderful game on Game Pass. Beyond that, games like this deserve just as much praise as the headline-grabbers, the triple-As, and the financial quarter heroes. I don’t want my kids playing slop where the ‘content’ is nothing more than a road to profit. Instead, I’ve got four years of brilliant memories tied to Wobbly Life, a game with heart that you don’t need to buy in a store.

The Silo Series Book Box Set Drops To Lowest Price Ever At Amazon

We’re still waiting for a premiere date for Silo Season 3, but fans of the Apple TV+ dystopian science fiction series can bide the time by reading the source material in a stylish new format. A Deluxe Collector’s Edition of Hugh Howey’s best-selling book Shift was published earlier this week. Season 3 of Silo is based on Shift, so it’s the perfect time to check out this stellar collection of novellas. Shift Deluxe Collector’s Edition is up for grabs for $37 at Amazon or Walmart.

Shift is the second book in the Silo series, though it takes place before Wool (Book 1). Fans can get a matching Wool Deluxe Collector’s Edition for only $20 (was $40) at Walmart. This deal was also available at Amazon, but it sold out earlier this week. Amazon and Walmart also have The Silo Series 3-Book Box Set for an all-time low of only $22, which is saying a lot because William Morrow published the paperback collection in 2020. And if you like ebooks, the Kindle edition of the box set is only $3 for a limited time.

The Silo Series Box Set collects paperback editions of Wool, Shift, and Dust. It also comes with a separate paperback chapbook of Silo short stories. In addition to roughly 1,700 pages of awesome science fiction, you’ll get to read some of Howey’s great nonfiction essays. All four books are boxed in a slipcase.

The three mainline books in the series are also sold separately in paperback. Each book is discounted to around $12 right now.

Each Deluxe Collector’s Edition has new cover art, sprayed edges, and illustrated endpapers. A full topographical map of the silos is printed in color on the inside of the dust jackets. Shift’s sprayed edges are blue, while Wool has red edges. In addition to the original three novellas that make up Shift, this 608-page edition has an original Silo short story by the author.

The first two seasons remained faithful to Wool while also carving their own path with unique character arcs and plot beats. It’s expected that Season 3 will also differ from Shift in some big ways while maintaining the general story arc from the book.

Shift and Wool are regularly referred to as novels, and they do read like novels, but sections of each book were originally released as novellas. Shift rewinds the clock roughly 200 years and chronicles the apocalypse as well as the creation of the eponymous Silos.

The stories are largely told from the perspective of congressman Donald Keane, who begins working on the Silo project in 2049. Throughout the three novellas, you learn more about E-Day and the global disasters that led to opening of Silo 1 in 2110. The final section in Shift leads into Wool.

Wool tells the tale of a world struggling to survive. What is left of humanity has been forced to live in an underground silo, as the world above is no longer fit for life. Things grow even more troublesome when the silo’s sheriff leaves his post, and a mechanic named Juliette is forced to take his place. What follows is a dramatic sci-fi epic that sees Juliette attempting to unravel a world-altering conspiracy.

Howey originally self-published Wool via Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing program. As mentioned, he released the book in chunks (novellas), which is reminiscent of serialized novels that were popular in the 1800s by authors such as Charles Dickens. The Martian author Andy Weir experienced similar success with a serialized release strategy, but Weir utilized his personal blog to deliver the story to readers.

Wool quickly became one of the early massive success stories on the Kindle publishing platform. That success led to a distribution deal for a print version of Wool and eventually a hit TV series. The Apple TV+ series debuted in 2023 to critical acclaim. The series will conclude its run with Season 4, which is expected to air late next year. This timeline could change depending on whether Season 3 winds up airing later this year or in early 2026.

The Silo Series also has an excellent audiobook version performed by Edoardo Ballerini. Audible members can get all three books for around $30, and non-members will wind up paying about $40. A graphic novel adaptation of Wool released in 2014 and is available for only $11.50 (was $19) in paperback.

There was really only one way to enhance the prospect of an Antarctic open world game with a choice of playable penguins that’s actually a fractious retelling of Lovecraft’s Mountains of Madness, created by the developers of Umurangi Generation. And that one way was to hire Lenval Brown, narrator for Disco Elysium’s special edition, to voice the first proper trailer. And also, make the trailer look a lot like John Carpenter’s The Thing. No further words from me are needed or desired. Find the footage below.

I have been informed by management that being a website editor, I am contractually obliged to provide further words. So be it! Announced in June, Penguin Colony is a short narrative adventure in which an explorer thrown outside Time by the Old Ones seeks aid by possessing or manipulating the local penguins. You will slide and slip around the surface of the bergs and also, travel deep beneath the ice, which is generally not a great place to be in anything Lovecraftian.


This being a game from the people behind Umurangi Generation, a brilliant political artwork which deals in themes of decolonization from the perspective of a Māori shutterbug, I imagine there will be some critique of Lovecraft’s notions about foreign parts and people. I don’t have the linguistic knowledge to confirm this, but based on some quick online research, part of the trailer also appears to be voiced in Māori.


The last penguin game I had the pleasure of was Faaast Penguin, which Brendy (RPS in peace) summarised as “that Super Mario 64 level where you race a penguin except now the penguin is 39 other players”. There are no Old Ones in Faaast Penguin, but it did launch almost exactly a year ago to the day – a temporal alignment that surely reflects the dire intervention of some cosmic Cthulhuin or Penghulu, tracing cryptic sentences with its immense pygostyle (tail bone) upon the snows of unreality.


While researching penguin anatomy in order to construct that stupid skit about the penguin god, I discovered that a “penguin diagram” is also some kind of quantum field McGuffin referring to the “flavours” of “quarks”. Coincidence? None of this is coincidence, foolish child! The universe is ending and Lenval Brown is here to preside over the collapse. Let’s see if we can distil any further cortex-flensing insight from the Steam page.


“Unlock different penguins to replay the game as,” it comments. “Different penguins have different abilities and challenges. For example playing as a baby penguin means you can fit in smaller gaps but you cannot swim.”


Well, that seems harmless enough. Please try to distract yourself from the coming doom by telling me which is your favourite penguin. If you wrote anything other than Rockhopper then sorry, you are wrong. Alternatively, exacerbate your awareness of the coming doom by rewatching Thingu.

Xbox Console Prices Will Increase Again Next Month

Microsoft has announced plans to increase the prices of its Xbox consoles in the United States for the second time this year, starting on October 5. The company cites “changes in the macroeconomic environment” as the reason for the price adjustments. 

In a time when consoles are becoming more expensive over time rather than cheaper, the five available models of Xbox Series X/S will have their prices raised yet again. Microsoft already increased these prices only a few months ago, on May 1.

Here are the new prices for each Xbox console. For comparison, we’ve also included the current price (as of May 1) and the original launch price of each piece of hardware.

“We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration,” reads Microsoft’s statement. “Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and providing value for Xbox players.”

This second price hike comes in a year full of them. Sony raised the prices of the PlayStation 5 in the UK, Europe, and other territories in April, similarly citing the current economic conditions caused by the US tariffs. Sony then raised the price of the PS5 in the US last month. 

Nintendo, perhaps most famously, delayed pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the US due to the economic conditions before raising prices on the console’s accessories before launch. Last month, Nintendo increased the prices of the original Switch models. 

The updated Xbox prices come right before the busy holiday season, which will be more challenging than ever for those looking to purchase game consoles as gifts or for themselves. It’s an unfortunate circumstance that, as things currently stand, doesn’t appear will be going away in the foreseeable future.

Randy Pitchford advises Borderlands 4 players to “get a refund” if they’re not happy with it, as social media tirade defending PC performance continues

As criticism of Borderlands 4’s technical performance continues, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has told players to “get a refund from Steam if you aren’t happy with it”.

Since Borderlands 4’s release last week, Pitchford has been on a tirade on social media in defence of the game calling it “pretty damn optimal”.

In his latest post, Pitchford stated every PC gamer “must accept the reality of the relationship between their hardware and what the software they are running is doing”, effectively placing responsibility on individual players to perform their own optimisations.

One player responded “Your product doesn’t meet the standards” and said it took days to get the game to a tolerable state.

“You can do whatever you want,” Pitchford replied. “The game is the game. Please get a refund from Steam if you aren’t happy with it.

“You made an analogy to a vehicle. I would not put a Ferrari engine in a monster truck and expect it to drive like a Ferrari. If you tell me about your specification, I can help you optimise your performance. I’m sorry you don’t like being told to use DLSS, but that is the way. If you’re not happy using the tools available to you to improve frame rate and you’re not happy with the frame rate you have, you should play a different game.

“The game is awesome and it is designed to be just fine of an experience at 30fps and feel great at 60fps. We also have provided a lot of options for you to make different trade offs between frame rate, resolution, and graphics features than we would make and we encourage you to use those tools to optimise to your taste. Would you like help tuning your experience better to your liking?”

Every PC gamer must accept the reality of the relationship between their hardware and what the software they are running is doing.

Despite performance issues across both PC and console platforms, Borderlands 4 is proving popular. On Steam alone it’s reached a concurrent player count of over 304k (though this remains behind Hollow Knight: Silksong).

The official Borderlands account released some player stats such as items looted and bosses defeated, with Pitchford adding: “Holy bananas you guys played a LOT of Borderlands 4 over the weekend. The backend on-line services all held, which is what we hoped would happen!”

It also looks like a POV slider could be added for console players, following complaints of motion sickness.

Late Night TV Reacts To The Jimmy Kimmel Charlie Kirk Fallout

Last night on The Tonight Show, Mario Kart superfan Jimmy Fallon did what Jimmy Fallon does best: chuckle at his own jokes, make funny faces, and shrug his shoulders. While he didn’t shy away from dunking on Donald Trump’s trip to the UK, he did pull his punches when talking about late night TV’s other Jimmy getting bullied off the air by a rogue president, his FCC goon squad, and a complicit c-suite. “To be honest with you all, I don’t know what’s going on, and no one does,” Fallon told viewers. That last part, at least, is an obvious lie. Why Jimmy Kimmel was kicked off the air by ABC is not complicated or confusing. Part of what’s so galling about it is just how stupid, craven, and obvious what happened is, and how none of that stopped it from happening.

Jimmy Kimmel was kicked off the air for making fun of Trump. Not because he joked about Charlie Kirk’s assassination, which he didn’t do, or because he lied about it, which he didn’t do either. Comments about the “MAGA gang” trying to score political points off Kirk’s murder were just the setup to a punchline about how Trump can’t even muster a crocodile tear over the right-wing podcaster’s death before gushing about his White House renovations. You can watch the tape. You can read the transcript. There is no ambiguity in what transpired, even as pundits paid to make hay of the controversy try to hedge by condemning something Kimmel didn’t say while advocating for a First Amendment that wasn’t directly violated.

That’s because ABC, and it’s corporate owner Disney, rushed to comply before it even got to that point. One of the biggest TV operators in the country, Nexstar Media Group, is trying to buy another operator called Tegna in a deal valued at over $6 billion and that would require the approval of Trump’s Justice Department. Along with conservative network affiliate owner Sinclair, Nexstar announced it would stop carrying Jimmy Kimmel Live! (Nexstar denies this was the reason.) FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened to investigate ABC and pull its broadcast licenses over Kimmel’s monologue. And then Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Dana Walden and CEO Bob Iger decided to preemptively pull the plug, provoking a celebrity-led boycott in the process.

Trump has been desperately trying to get Kimmel fired for months. Shortly after Paramount sacrificed Stephen Colbert to get its merger approved with Skydance, the president made this as clear as possible. “Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes and, shortly thereafter, Fallon will be gone,” he posted in July. Anyone who keeps acting surprised by what’s going on, like Fallon, just hasn’t been paying attention or, worse, thinks that they can save themselves by trying to pretend none of it is happening. Even ex-Disney CEO Michael Eisner is going, in so many words, “Wait, what the fuck is happening?”

Maybe that’s why it felt strangely nostalgic and refreshing to watch Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert last night, each tackling Kimmel’s firing in their own ways but in no uncertain terms. Like a lot of people, I watched The Daily Show and The Colbert Report a lot in college. Then I stopped. At some point the formula began to feel not only cringe but aimless. The news was getting grimmer and the stakes less funny. But last night reminded me what worked about them all those years ago. It’s cathartic to watch people call out obvious bullshit, especially when so many others keep running away from it, anxiously looking to their colleagues and bosses to make sure they don’t step out of line, even when the line is drawn by a dangerous buffoon. That’s how the Bush years felt. Nothing’s changed and yet now somehow it’s even worse.

“I do know Jimmy Kimmel, and he’s a decent, funny, and loving guy, and I hope he comes back,” Fallon said last night. It is, of course, not up to Kimmel if he comes back. Fallon knows that. He also knows he could be next. And that cynical calculus is what will make sure he’s not the last.

Just when you thought Fortnite already had too many battle royale modes, Epic Games goes and drops another one. The new mode, dubbed Delulu, is completely unlike any of the other battle royale variations because it does two things the others don’t: It has proximity voice chat, and encourages teaming mid-game with other players not in your group. But it’s also a mode where only one person comes out as the winner. Katniss and Peeta’s trick with the berries will not work here.

Delulu has been a blast so far, and matches feel vaguely like Epic mashed up its normal BR with its Party Royale mode–it’s a battle royale about socializing. You can use an emote specific to Delulu to join and exit other players’ parties on the fly. And since teaming is allowed in this mode, nothing prevents you from collaborating with even more players after you hit the max number for a party.

Since the social aspect is so crucial to the purpose of this mode, you’re required to have a mic, and have the in-game voice chat on and set to Everybody before you can even queue up for it. You can join a round with your friends, but everyone drops in alone, and you’ll eventually have to put them down if you want to win.

Delulu is Fortnite’s latest attempt to innovate with a new battle royale mode.

Right now, Delulu is live on the weekend only, which means it will be available from Friday morning until Monday morning–and it’s slated to return next Friday for the same span of time, too. And while it’s delightful, there’s a bit of a learning curve since there are some nuances to it that Fortnite itself will not explain to you, so we figured we’d take a moment to highlight three important things you should know as you drop into Fortnite Delulu.

There are no reboots in Delulu, but any play can resurrect any knocked player

No matter how you play it, Delulu is a solo mode that ends each round with just one winner. So when you’re dead, the round is over for you. There will be no rebooting you. However, Delulu players are always knocked before they die, and any other player can res you regardless of which team they’re on or if they’re even in a squad at all. It’s possible your foes will have mercy. It’s not unheard of.

The proximity chat effect applies to your squad, too

Nothing about the voice chat changes when you join a squad–you’ll still only be able to talk to each other when you’re in range of the proximity chat, unlike the way squad comms work in normal BR modes. You’ll want to keep that in mind when you find that your three teammates are all hanging out together out of your earshot–they might be planning to betray you.

Playing as a Delulu non-hostile actually works

While there are people who play Delulu the same way they would any other battle royale mode, most folks seem pretty willing to engage with the social aspect and just hang out. I’ve had games already where we had more than a dozen players roaming the countryside until the endgame forced us to turn on each other.

And, yes, I’ve had more than a few rounds that ended very abruptly after a group of sociopathic teens pretended to be chill, only to shoot me in the face when I let them get close, but I’ve had very few early deaths despite taking a pacifistic approach whenever I could. The whole thing is a lot less anxiety-inducing than I expected.

Don’t try to win in Delulu

While I understand that being the last person standing is the stated purpose of Delulu, this particular BR mode is best experienced with a “let’s see how this plays out” sort of view on things. It’s a rare situation where you can truly say that it’s more about the journey than the destination, and that’s because rounds of Delulu often play out in weird and unpredictable ways. In this mode, the most fun usually occurs from doing things completely differently than you would in the other battle royale modes.

Endless Legend 2’s demo had its critics – here’s how Amplitude are changing the early access build in response

I confess, after reading the comments on yesterday’s Endless Legend 2 early access impressions, I am mortally afeared that I’m one of those accursed “positive outliers” I keep reading about in the Gamer Witchfinder Almanac. Seemingly, a fair portion of you were turned off by the recent Steam demo. You may be interested, then, to read specifics about how Amplitude have changed the game in response to demo feedback.


As detailed in a new Steam post, here’s what they think you liked. Firstly, the Tidefall mechanic, whereby the ocean retreats periodically to reveal extra playable terrain, and the regular Monsoons that sweep the land. “This was a core element of the game, and we were happy to see it having a real impact,” the devs write, adding that they tinkered a lot with the quantity of Monsoons and Tidefalls. Apparently, there were once eight smaller Tidefalls to every game of Endless Legend 2, so many that players began ignoring them.


They also reckon you’re keen on the asymmetrical faction design – “always a focus of Amplitude” – and that you’re mostly enjoying the art and sound, including the map design, characters and jingles for stuff like minor factions, or the weird echoey thudding you might hear during Monsoons.


Now for weaknesses. According to Amplitude, the bulk of the negative feedback concerned the user interface. “A quarter of reviews mentioned UI and only 30% of those comments were positive,” they note. “In reading all your feedback we realize it’s not as simple as making a few changes and we are looking at something larger. There are instances where we displayed the wrong or not enough information. There were UI and text bugs to fix and we think more is needed here, which will take some time.”


In particular, they’re looking at making the city screens more intelligible. “Adjacency, leveling districts, managing population, and having clear decisions on what to build next were all muddy,” the devs write. This is a “flow issue”, apparently, which I guess refers to how your eyeballs and attention move from one UI element to the next in the course of urban management.

Amongst other things, they might change up Districts so that you can select them from a construction list like Improvements, rather than picking a tile to build on first. “This will take time to change and won’t be in the initial Early Access, but we will be sharing concepts with you to get feedback,” the devs comment.


To belatedly update my impressions from yesterday, I haven’t had much of a problem with the UI in the early access build, but there were definitely a couple of moments this week when the verdant tile designs made it hard to discern, say, city centres, or units inside cities. It’s definitely rather busy, which is to be expected for a 4X strategy game with such florid factions and a turbulent expanding map. I also sometimes forgot what right-click and left-click do in different contexts. I don’t consider any of these deal-breakers, however.


Following on from those UI thoughts, Amplitude acknowledge that some players have found the colourful world a little too hallucinogenic. They’ve addressed this in early access by making city foundations clearer, so you know to build there, while getting rid of bugs (not the Necrophage) that caused blurriness, and adding more graphics options. They’ve also reduced the colour saturation of the terrain a little and made the all-important hexagonal grid lines more prominent, while shrinking certain fancier vegetation that players kept confusing with Anomalies.


“It’s a difficult balance between providing a lush, detailed world where you can see the leaves blow in the wind during monsoon, and still not have to strain or be confused when trying to see information you need to play,” the developers observe.


In my impressions of Endless Legend 2, I was most critical of the character writing. Demo players were also iffy about this side of the game. In their Steam post, Amplitude note that there are many more words in Endless Legend 2 than the 2014 original, including reams of character dialogue. “We want heroes to feel personal and deep,” they write. “They may be members of your council, have their own friends and enemies, and they talk directly to you and each other. But this additional granularity also came with issues.


“For Early Access we have updated the presentation of the dialog, we are cutting lines and events to focus on only the best and most suitable,” the devs continue. “In some cases, the wrong character would say something, or a character it didn’t make sense for, which we are fixing.” I definitely picked up on a few instances of the latter, but my overarching problem with the character writing is that the focus on characters doesn’t do certain factions justice. The Necrophage are a horde, not a cast. The Aspect are a reef, not an ensemble. That’s what I find attractive about them conceptually, at least.


Endless Legend 2 launches into early access on 22nd September. It’ll start off with five factions. They’re planning to add a sixth plus multiplayer and custom faction support before the 1.0 release next year. If you end up disliking it please don’t burn my house down.

Zach Cregger’s forthcoming Resident Evil film will be an “entirely original story”, so won’t feature fan-favourite character Leon Kennedy.

The director of recent horror-hit Weapons spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his next film, based on Capcom’s game series.

“When you watch it, you’ll be like, ‘This is very Zach’,” he said. “It’s just [that] it takes place in the Resident Evil world. I don’t think fans of the games are gonna be bummed.”

Weapons star Austin Abrams will lead the Resident Evil film cast, with actor and professional wrestler Paul Walter Hauser also confirmed. Cregger has co-written the script with Shay Hatten.

“I’m not gonna steal Leon and put him in an original story. I think that would be presumptuous,” said Cregger. “But I respect the games enough where I’m gonna like tell a Resident Evil story in the Resident Evil canon that still leaves everything they love intact from the games, you know what I mean?”

He added: “I think that when you see it, you’ll understand how I can be obsessed with original ideas and still make a movie that is an IP-based thing. I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense now, but I hope that it will later.”

In a previous interview, Cregger stated the film “lives” in the world of Resident Evil 2 and 3, but “adheres more to the tone of 4”. What’s more, the viewing experience will be akin to the journey players take in the game, following a protagonist from A to B “as they just descend deeper and deeper and deeper into hell”.

Cregger’s Resident Evil film is set for a release on 18th September 2026.
