Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode is borrowing some of the worst aspects of Call of Duty: Warzone, but at least its ring of fire instantly kills you

by admin September 11, 2025

Battlefield Studios has officially unveiled the first details of the Battlefield 6 battle royale mode, which was first announced in August at the game’s multiplayer reveal event. At the time, the developer didn’t confirm its official name, or really discuss any of its aspects.

It did announce, however, that the mode would be coming to Battlefield Labs, the community testing environment that’s been running in the background since February. That moment has now arrived.

In a blog post, the developer revealed some key, top-level goals for Battlefield 6’s battle royale mode. It still doesn’t officially have a name, but the post essentially makes it sound like a modern version of Battlefield 5’s Firestorm battle royale mode, with some features from Call of Duty: Warzone.

Destruction will play a key role in the mode, of course, but you can also expect many of the core game’s gadgets and vehicles to be present – including ways to acquire armored vehicles for late-game situations.

Anyone who played games like PUBG, Apex Legends, or Fortnite should be very familiar with how it’s going to flow. The post confirms respawn mechanics, for instance.

That said, this iteration comes with its own interesting twists on the battle royale formula. For one, classes from the multiplayer side will be present here, with one example being the Support’s ability to revive downed teammates.

Indeed, classes in general will play a larger role than you might expect. Each member of the squad gets to choose the class they’re going to play as, just like traditional multiplayer. These choices cannot be changed after the match has begun.

Each player starts the match with two gadgets from their class, and they’re able to level up during the match to unlock new Traits (like faster armor plate equip speed) for use within the same match. Throughout the game, there’ll be ways to earn XP, such missions with a variety of goals.

Battlefield 6’s BR mode will, of course, feature an ever-encroaching ring of fire that gradually makes the playable area smaller and smaller. Unlike most BR games, however, this one will instantly kill anyone caught outside of it, eliminating any out-of-ring play.

Ground loot is present, split across five tiers of rarities. Attachments appear to be separate lootable items this time around, which is an interesting change. Outside of other, expected items, you’ll also come across Strike Packages, which are effectively killstreaks.

Unfortunately, the mode will also allow players to bring in custom weapons from multiplayer, which can be called in using an item found in loot chests and on the ground.

This particular test will focus only on four-player squads, with a maximum of 100 players in each match. It’s not clear how high the player count is going to be in the final version, but 100 is within expectations for BR modes.

Battlefield Studios promised to return later to share more after feedback has been collected, and it’s certainly going to be interesting to see how players respond to some of that.

Is Nintendo's potentially industry-changing new monster battling patent enforceable? We asked some lawyers

Is Nintendo’s potentially industry-changing new monster battling patent enforceable? We asked some lawyers

by admin September 11, 2025

Nintendo has been granted a new patent in the US, following its ongoing patent infringement lawsuit with Palworld developer Pocketpair.

The new patent, granted last week by the US Patent and Trademark Office, covers the gameplay mechanic of summoning a sub-character to let it fight another. The patent application was filed in March 2023 and has been granted without objection (thanks Games Fray).

Such a patent would not only implicate Palworld with its monster summoning and battling, but many similar games from long-standing rival Digimon, to the forthcoming Honkai: Nexus Anima and DokeV, as well as indies like Temtem and Cassette Beasts.

There are a number of steps in the patent pertaining to the gameplay mechanic, as follows:

  1. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored therein a game program, the game program causing a processor of an information processing apparatus to execute:
  2. performing control of moving a player character on a field in a virtual space, based on a movement operation input;
  3. performing control of causing a sub character to appear on the field, based on a first operation input, and
  4. when an enemy character is placed at a location where the sub character is caused to appear, controlling a battle between the sub character and the enemy character by a first mode in which the battle proceeds based on an operation input, and
  5. when the enemy character is not placed at the location where the sub character is caused to appear, starting automatic control of automatically moving the sub character that has appeared; and
  6. performing control of moving the sub character in a predetermined direction on the field, based on a second operation input, and, when the enemy character is placed at a location of a designation, controlling a battle between the sub character and the enemy character by a second mode in which the battle automatically proceeds.

All of these steps must be followed for Nintendo to have a case, but in theory it could launch an infringement lawsuit against a number of games with this patent now in place.

But is this patent enforceable through further lawsuits from Nintendo?

Don McGowan, former chief legal officer at The Pokémon Company, believes the patent will likely be ignored. “I wish Nintendo and Pokémon good luck when the first other developer just entirely ignores this patent and, if those companies sue that developer, the developer shows decades of prior art,” he told Eurogamer, adding: “This isn’t Bandai Namco with the loading screen patent”.

“The filing for such patent protection indicates that Nintendo does intend to pursue a legal strategy in defending itself against entrants in the pocket monster genre,” games industry lawyer Richard Hoeg told Eurogamer. “But that strategy may or may not involve lawsuits, as the ‘muddying of the waters’ effected by the patents existence may be enough to deter investment in and creation of competitors. That is, if Nintendo looks like it could pounce, that may be enough. No actual pouncing required.”

What’s more, the patent is broad and Nintendo won’t want to jeopardise seeing it narrowed in the context of a legal challenge, Hoeg explained.

“So yes, it’s enforceable in so far as it has been granted,” said Hoeg, “but Nintendo likely knows it ‘got away with one’ here and would prefer not to make a court actually sign off.”

What’s more worrying for Hoeg is whether the USPTO is “up to the task” when it comes to games patents. “Law and technology are often strange bedfellows, and in my opinion the patent office has appeared out of its depth on evaluating video games for quite some time,” said Hoeg. “It may be time for reform there.”

At the least, the patent is certainly worrying for the games industry in the face of creativity and developer freedom.

Already Pocketpair has altered gameplay in Palworld as part of its ongoing lawsuit with Nintendo, despite disputing the claims of copyright infringement.

The patent is also well-timed ahead of Nintendo’s forthcoming Pokémon Legends: Z-A, due out on 16th October.

All The Games Being Added To The PS Plus Catalog In September

by admin September 11, 2025

Fall is nearly here. People around my place are putting up Halloween decorations already. I’m leaving my windows open and going outside more. But I’ll try to stay in and enjoy some of the new games being added to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog this month, like The Invincible and Persona 5 Tactica.

On September 10, PlayStation officially announced the next round of PS Plus Extra and Premium games that will be added to the subscription service’s game catalog. All of these newly revealed games will be available to start downloading and playing on September 16.

I’m really happy to see Crow Country on here. This indie lo-fi retro survival horror game caught my attention last year when it launched, but I never got around to playing it because there were (and still are) too many damn games. That made me sad, but now that it’s waiting for me on my PS5 as we enter Spooky Season, I’m going to try and play it. Another horror game included here, Conscript, also seems like a perfect Halloween game. Heck, even Legacy of Kain: Defiance, this month’s classic game, has some creepy, gothic horror vibes, too.  If PlayStation is giving out two horror games in September, I’m hopeful that next month’s offerings will include even more spooky titles!

Remember, to access, download, and play these games, you’ll need to be an active PS Plus Extra or Premium tier subscriber. Essential tier subscribers don’t get access to the game catalog. And if your subscription runs out in the future, you’ll no longer be able to play these games.

Anyway, here’s the full list of games being added to PS Plus and its various tiers next week:

PlayStation Plus Extra And Premium

  • WWE 2K25 – PS5, PS4
  • Persona 5 Tactica – PS5, PS4
  • Green Hell – PS5, PS4
  • Fate/Samurai Remnant – PS5, PS4
  • Crow Country – PS5, PS4
  • The Invincible – PS5
  • Conscript – PS5

PlayStation Plus Premium Only

  • Legacy of Kain: Defiance – PS5, PS4

While we’re struggling with Hollow Knight: Silksong, speedrunners are beating it in under 90 minutes

by admin September 11, 2025

There’s plenty of debate online around the difficulty of Hollow Knight: Silksong, but while most of us are struggling, speedrunners have already beaten the game in under 90 minutes mere days after release.

The record is moving fast, literally! Yesterday, YouTuber Onaku managed a Silksong any% speedrun in 1:46:47, but hours later YouTuber BlueSR managed a run in 1:26:20. What’s more, the speedrunner will be aiming for an even quicker World Record time today.

I’ve linked to the runs of both speedrunners above, but of course these will be full of spoilers for anyone still back in the early game. Or perhaps you’re keen to check out some expert strategies.

Hollow Knight: Silksong – Release TrailerWatch on YouTube

The official speedrunning leaderboard won’t open until 1st October, at which point we’ll have a firm idea of the World Record time and the official rules. Until then, speedrunners will be rapidly sharing their times on social media.

Judging by the game’s achievements, it’s possible to achieve 100 percent game completion in under 30 hours, but there’s also an achievement for completing the game in under five hours (aptly named “Speedrunner”). So even if a run of just over an hour isn’t achievable for you, those looking to gain all achievements will still need to complete an exceptionally fast run.

For comparison, the current World Record for the original Hollow Knight sits at just over 30 minutes!

If, like the rest of us, you’re struggling with Silksong, check out our Hollow Knight: Silksong walkthrough to help get you through.

An abandoned Fry's electronics shows signs for computer hardware.

Soon-To-Be-Demolished Fry’s Electronics Is Pure Liminal Dread

by admin September 11, 2025

The world of gaming and consumer electronics kinda feels like a liminal space right now if you grew up during the ‘00s, ‘90s, or earlier decades. The brick-and-mortar locations that many of us would visit to pick up a new game or simply to wander around and kill some time are increasingly empty, destined for destruction or for uses far removed from what they were before. And as physical media continues to be squeezed out of gaming thanks to the convenience of digital distribution and silly stuff like Nintendo’s Game Key-Cards, it doesn’t look like that’s likely to change anytime soon.

If you’re looking to steep yourself in that strange feeling of seeing a world frozen in a state of abandonment, might I divert your attention to a set of photos from a vacant Fry’s Electronics store in Phoenix Arizona?

This emptied store came up on my radar while browsing Reddit’s r/LiminalSpace (an experience that pairs well with SomaFM’s Dark Zone station, I might add). Vast empty aisles and hanging signs advertising products that are nowhere to be found–it sure is a mood. And though the Aztec-themed stylings of this particular location use some different cultural affectations, its abandoned state reminds me of the Las Vegas section of Horizon: Forbidden West, with notably less water and fewer robot dinosaurs (I hope).

Unfortunately, this location is destined for demolition, so future Aloy will not be battling a Tideripper in here. Check out a walkthrough of this abandoned location here:

Fry’s Electronics started closing all of its stores on February 24, 2021, a victim of the massive shift toward online shopping and the impact of the covid-19 pandemic. Being an East Coaster, I never had the chance to check out one of these stores. We have plenty of MicroCenters here, but as one Redditor commented, MicroCenter “lacks the personality” of what we can see even in the shots of this abandoned Fry’s.

Elsewhere in the comments of the Reddit post highlighting the Phoenix Fry’s location, folks are shouting out the variety of themes Fry’s had across its various locations. A San Fernando Valley one was based on Alice in Wonderland. Another in Austin, Texas had music themes, with a piano-shaped entrance. San Jose’s had a Mayan temple motif.

It feels a bit strange to be basking mournfully in the liminal vibes of an abandoned big box store, since Fry’s was, after all, just another business like any other, a capitalist enterprise concerned only with amassing profit. Now the big chains are the food. Circle of capitalist life. I’m sure there’s an interesting academic article on that somewhere.

There's a new Nintendo Direct this Friday (and it's just before a major Mario anniversary)

There’s a new Nintendo Direct this Friday (and it’s just before a major Mario anniversary)

by admin September 11, 2025

There have been rumours circulating for a while, but now we have confirmation: Nintendo is hosting its next Nintendo Direct presentation this week.

Per the platform holder, the stream will be broadcast online on Friday, 12th September at 2pm BST (that’s 9am ET or 6am PT, 3pm CEST if you’re in Europe).

The show will run for 60 minutes (which is quite long for a Direct these days!) and promises to include updates and releases for both Switch and Switch 2.

It’s actually quite peculiar timing for Nintendo: we’ve had a general Direct on 31st July, and then another specifically dedicated to Kirby Air Riders, too, on 19th August. This is quite close concentration for these events (no that I’m complaining).

It is not year clear what the showcase will present, though it is worth noting there is a very substantial anniversary coming up as the world gets ready to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros (which takes place on Saturday). Will we see anything special to mark the occaision? Will get get a second year of Luigi? Will Waluigi ever be let out of whatever cage he’s been crammed in? Only time will tell.

Outside of Mario, everyone is hoping for a release date of Metroid Prime 4 Beyond – after all the nonsense we’ve seen about the game in the past few months, you’d hope Nintendo is actually finally ready to pull the trigger and release the damn game.

We’ll find out more on Friday. What are you hoping to see?

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Crusaders King 3 Dev Apologizes For Busted Coronations DLC

Crusaders King 3 Dev Apologizes For Busted Coronations DLC

by admin September 11, 2025

Yesterday, Crusader Kings 3 released a new DLC for the popular historical strategy game. The reaction to it was very negative, with complaints about it being small and broken, as well as including features that some players felt should have been in the main game. Now, the game’s QA manager has issued a lengthy apology and explained what happened.

On September 9, Paradox Interactive released the “Coronations” DLC pack for Crusader Kings 3. This is just one of many, many DLCs and expansions that have been released for the large-scale strategy game since it launched back in 2020. However, shortly after Coronations launched on Steam, players began sharing negative reviews and complaining that one feature of the small DLC, oaths, was completely broken and causing problems during campaigns. Others complained that the small DLC should have been a free update and argued that Paradox has been squeezing player wallets more and more with these smaller DLCs. The Coronations DLC now has an overall negative rating on Steam.

In response to all this negative feedback and anger, Paradox’s QA manager has posted an apology, explained what happened, and promised that the studio would do better in the future to prevent this from happening again.

On Thursday, Crusader Kings 3‘s QA manager, Riad, shared a message with fans on the game’s official Steam page. According to Riad, he’s been wanting to apologize to the community for the last 24 hours and asked the “higher-ups” for permission to write an apology.

“I’m sorry. Coronations was not up to the standard you deserve, and that’s on me,” said Riad. “As the QA Manager for the studio, it is my job to ensure that our releases meet the [quality assurance] vision we have set out. It is clear we didn’t give the project the resources and attention it needed, and the result was a release that let you down. You have every right to be upset, and I want to acknowledge that openly.”

Riad explained that the studio has been “pouring enormous effort” into the next massive Crusader Kings 3 expansion, All Under Heaven. According to the QA boss, it’s the biggest expansion the studio has ever made and “basically every resource” is “committed” to making sure the expansion is “up to [fan] expectations.” However, this led to other projects at Paradox, like the Coronations DLC, having fewer resources and staff. And while Riad is “very proud” of what the team was able to pull off with limited resources, the QA boss called the whole situation “unfair” to both fans and the devs. Riad also blamed “last-minute” changes for oaths being broken in the new DLC and claimed the studio was going to be more “stringent” about these tweaks.

“Many of us on the team, myself included, joined Paradox as fans of the games. Meeting you at events…hearing your stories, and seeing how much Crusader Kings 3 means to you is what makes this work so meaningful,” said Riad. “That’s why it hurts so much when we fuck up like this. We don’t take your trust for granted, and I want to do my best to ensure we earn it back.”

Riad says that there is at least one more patch on the way to fix more issues in the Coronations DLC and added, “Thank you for holding us accountable and for continuing to care about this game as much as we do. We will do better.”

As government money tightens its grip on fighting games, the push back to grassroots events gains momentum

As government money tightens its grip on fighting games, the push back to grassroots events gains momentum

by admin September 11, 2025

Last week, the news broke that the Saudi Arabian city project Qiddiya had acquired an American talent management and brand consulting firm called RTS. Now, you may not have heard of RTS, but you may have heard of the video game event it co-owns: Evo.

Evo, the largest fighting game tournament in the world, is now owned in-part by the Saudi Arabian government. This government, criticised heavily for its human rights record, has brought the jewel of the fighting game community into its ever-growing sportswashing venture.

The reaction was loud and largely negative in the wake of this announcement, with a wave of fighting game fans and professionals decrying the move, pledging to never attend an Evo again, and urging others to focus their interest and money towards community-owned grassroots events. But will this manifest in reality, or remain just a topic-of-the-week on social media? To find out, I reached out to those who’ve dedicated a chunk of their lives to the genre to find out if the sentiment to go back to basics is real.

“I fully expected it – it was a little sooner than I thought it would – but at some point it was bound to happen” says Jack “Kenno” Kenwright, a UK-based commentator. He continued by pointing to other games and the growing Saudi government presence there: “Rocket League, League of Legends, Counter Strike… All these games have already been largely assimilated. They’re being supported by certain companies that some people might have issues with, some people might not care about, and some people might be fine with. That’s been going on for ages and eventually it was going to come to the FGC. It’s the monkey’s paw isn’t it? People want a cheaper event with higher budgets and prize pools and it’s like, well, you got it!”

Laura “Femshep” Genn, an up-and-coming competitive Street Fighter 6 player, echoed this lack of shock: “It was never going to stop at the Esports World Cup. You don’t pour that kind of money into something and decide, we’re good. We don’t need any more opportunities to present the messages that EWC is putting out there politically. I’m a bit of a chronic optimist so I had hoped it would have been at least a bit less overt for a while longer.”

While some like Kenwright and Genn saw this coming and were prepared with pre-existing opinions on the matter of Saudi Arabian sportswashing, others had the recent acquisition act as a push to educate themselves. People like Tekken content creator and coach Stephen “Speedkicks” Stafford, whose reservations lie in the general concern around governmental involvement rather than specific concerns around Saudi Arabia.

“I’m not personally into doing events affiliated with governments, regardless of what government it is. I’m not prosecuting any specific government, I just don’t think we should be doing politically-enforced events. After looking into what the Saudi government has been doing and the WWE events there I was like, I don’t like this as the future of fighting games. I don’t think there’s any specific nation where I’d be happy if they bought Evo.”

“At least with the rich guys who came in in FGC money-pumps past, who were like I’m gonna own this or buy this, they see no return and they leave. We know what they’re here to do – they’re here to make money. They may be misguided, as long as they believe they can make money, we take their money and that’s great for us! We get this money pump event and move on. But when it’s a government-funded event it’s different – their interest doesn’t have to be profit. And here there’s an interest beside money.”

What does the future hold for EVO? The public opinion is sour. | Image credit: Evo / Sony Interactive Entertainment

With all this in mind the big question is clear: would these people with aspirations and careers tied to fighting games attend Evo now that it’s under this controversial new management? The answers varied, but all believed that a refocus on community-led grassroots events was the best path forward.

Stafford expressed that for him, this is where the line is: “Other people are looking at it from a more moral disagreement side, they don’t want any association and that’s where they draw their line. For me it’s about the health of the scene, I want it to thrive. When EWC was just a motivator that got people to play and got them money and sponsors, that was fine. Now, the hard ownership of the most prestigious open-bracket tournament… I don’t know what their plan is but we know the agenda is they’re selling this city. We’re in their hands now.”

For Kenwright, he’d still likely go if offered a commentary job at Evo, but would prefer to attend other US-events first: “I think at the moment it hasn’t changed my perspective of Evo, because I already would rather go to other events like Combo Breaker, Texas Showdown, CEOtaku etc. I would rather go to them first before I fully ingest myself into Evo as I’ve never experienced the American scene. It’s still second priority.

“As for working for Evo, it’s still a goal, it will always be a goal, but obviously it’s one that I’m a little bit more hesitant about now as I have a lot of friends in the Guilty Gear Strive and Granblue scenes who look at it another way. Obviously my goals are my goals and they won’t be affected by other people, but if you go to those events and to certain places it’s… you’re essentially saying your stance when you take those roles. But, if I was still called up for work, I’d probably still go.”

Street Fighter 6 publisher, Capcom, has received over $1 billion in investment from the Saudi Arabian public investment fund. | Image credit: Capcom

Genn is certain that they wouldn’t feel comfortable going to Evo, even if they believe that the event will remain an enjoyable experience for the average attendee. “Right now I don’t think I would feel comfortable going back to Evo. I don’t expect the event to change in any significant way in terms of attendee experience. I had a lovely time this year just like I did at every major I attend, and had a lovely time. If anything, with more money coming in the production quality might improve. But I don’t think that amount of money coming in will happen if Evo isn’t playing the same ads and messaging, social media posts, and the same lines in interviews as has been said at the EWC.

“With the EWC there’s a glaring absence of women, I’m sure there are some, but not as many as I’ve seen in other places. There are no visibly queer people at all because the message they sent when asked if people would be safe attending the EWC is to respect their laws. Those laws, whether or not they’re always enforced, are if you are visibly queer you can be put to death. The implication being ‘just play the game, and don’t be visibly queer in any way’.”

“I already would rather go to other events like Combo Breaker, Texas Showdown, or CEOtaku.”

So what will happen now? Unfortunately, from the perspective of those interviewed, a sizable portion of the playerbase who wish to continue chasing a career in the fighting game space has little choice but to swallow any disdain they might have. As Stafford put it: “The most annoying thing about this is it’s clearly designed to be successful. Fighting games were just at the point where people could escape their livelihood, but not at the point where people could boycott certain big events. They aren’t receiving a salary if they aren’t attending Evo, EWC, to do all that stuff. Aside from the prize pools, they just wouldn’t be in the money-making ecosystem. So they got us! It’s not reasonable to expect top players to take a moral stand when they have to eat.”

Genn also acknowledges the tricky situation, but believes what’s key at this point is honest conversations around what has happened and why it’s happening: “People need to be able to come to their own conclusions on what decision they’d like to make in light of their personal ethics, and what they would like their money to support. If you decide the best thing to do is to be involved, loud, and visible? Okay! If you decide like me you don’t want to be at an event funded by that source? Okay! But let’s not pretend that’s not where the money is coming from, or there aren’t legitimate concerns.

“It is becoming increasingly impossible to engage in the serious competitive part of the FGC in a prolonged capacity without being willing to participate in the EWC. If only because the large sponsorships that fund your ability to attend large tournaments are funding you because they anticipate you attending the EWC, and they want their brand there. I understand that not every player can say I’m not going to attend this as it would functionally be the end of their career, and I don’t think it’s our place to make that call for everybody. But likewise I do think it’s moral cowardice to parrot phrases like ‘there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism’ as a shield for decisions we make.”

This year’s Esports World Cup was, controversially, held in Riyadh. | Image credit: Esports World Cup.

For Kenwright, Genn, and Stafford, what’s crucial now is to support local events that lack that murky governmental conundrum, to refocus on what built up the scene into what it was in the first place – community run events where money takes second place to the social and competitive experience.

“If you do have trouble with this news, don’t just show it on Twitter by making a quick post, show it by supporting your locals,” stated Kenwright. “Supporting a place where you feel safe, or just somewhere you know you’ll enjoy. My stance will always be: put your money where your mouth is.”

“The coolest thing about the FGC in my opinion is that we’re on the smaller side of esports, but if you were to remove esports things like the potential to get paid, to get famous… Fighting games would probably have the most players left over,” stated Stafford. “You’ll have the most players willing to show up for no money, just to have a good time with some cool people.”

Stafford continued: “With fighting games it’s important we still protect that. So in my mind, I won’t be associated with those bigger clout events. Anything EWC affiliated, EWC-partnered events like Combo Breaker, CEO. I won’t be restreaming or talking about them on my platform at all. We’ll still have a good time as we revert to more FGC and less esports. I want people to know there’s still an avenue for that experience that isn’t giant esports Saudi Arabian tournaments.

I won’t be restreaming or talking about them on my platform at all.

“That way, in a few years if Saudi Arabia gets bored and the community has been a great means-to-an-end, their city is huge and they don’t need fighting games, the FGC will survive.”

For Genn, now’s the time for people to go out and support their local communities. Failing that, it’s time to start your own. “The majority of people have a local they can go to, that they’ve never attended. And if there isn’t, they can start one. There are all kinds of amazing events at a small scale. The heart of the FGC is a local where you and your friends are there for the love of the game. It’s called the fighting game community, not the fighting game prize pot. It’s always been about the people. The best way to show we value the prize pot is to recognise there’s value to be found in an event where you win and get $20 or less.”

What Switch 2 Leaks Tell Us About The Upcoming Longest Nintendo Direct Ever

by admin September 10, 2025

The Nintendo Direct that fans have been waiting for is finally here and it’s a big one. September is usually when the company has its annual blowout showcase, and after a messy first half of 2025 ahead of the Switch 2 launch, it seems like we might be getting back into a familiar flow. After a quiet couple of years, the drought may finally be over. The Switch 2 is out and Nintendo can finally wheel out the big guns.

With Nintendo promising an hour-long livestream, the September 12 Direct will be the longest in the company’s history outside of the April one earlier this year for revealing the Switch 2 hardware. It also comes just ahead of the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. on September 13, suggesting plenty of Mario-themed announcements may be in tow as well. And then there’s the flurry of recently leaks from self-proclaimed insiders, some with a good enough track record to take them seriously going into the event. Here’s what we’re likely to see at the latest Nintendo Direct this Friday, from rumors and best guesses to some wild longshots that are too cool not to think about.

Resident Evil, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and more ports

According to Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem, we should expect a whole lot of Capcom’s horror series to be coming to Switch 2 in the year ahead. That includes Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village, as well as the Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 remakes. Notably, all of these were created on the current RE Engine, which Capcom has been using for all of its new games. Dusk Golem has suggested the newest sequel, Resident Evil: Requiem, will arrive on Switch 2 at some point as well.

While only a port of RE7 has been claimed to be getting revealed at this week’s Direct, fans have already started speculating about what this will mean for Capcom’s other franchises on Switch 2. Both Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds were also developed in the RE Engine, as was Street Fighter 6 which was a launch game for the hardware back in June.

Final Fantasy VII Remake isn’t out on Switch 2 yet, but there are already rumors that Rebirth isn’t far behind. Reliable Switch leaker NateTheHate recently claimed the sequel is headed to Nintendo’s new console sometime in 2026. He’s also previously reported that Red Dead Redemption 2 is being ported to Switch 2, which seems likely to arrive sooner than later. That doesn’t mean either will be at this week’s Direct but they are certainly in the mix. There are rumors that Starfield and Assassin’s Creed Shadows will end up on Nintendo’s handheld hybrid at some point, too.

Then there’s a very messy riddle from leaker SwitchForce who was the first to reveal that a Nintendo Direct was happening on September 12. The tease is that there will be three games at the showcase with the number seven in the title. Outside of FF7, there’s been speculation about Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Ace Attorney 7 being the others, though SwitchForce said the long-running courtroom series definitely wouldn’t be in the livestream. A more obvious choice is 007 First Light, which was recently at the PlayStation State of Play as well.

The year of Super Mario Bros.

SwitchForce has also been teasing big Mario news at the event. “They buy the new systems for the mustache,” read a tweet featuring a GIF of Mario from Super Mario Odyssey. One theory is that the Odyssey team split in two, with a younger offshoot working on Donkey Kong Bananza and another developing the next 3D Mario game. The timing makes the reveal of Super Mario Odyssey‘s successor feel all but assured, though it probably won’t be the only Mario announcement in the Direct.

We’re also less than a year out from The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 with no real info about what the story will be or which celebrities will be joining the English-language cast. At least an initial teaser, if not a full-blown trailer, could be in the cards. Maybe we’ll even get a double feature with a tease for the upcoming Zelda movie in 2027 as well? It could be as simple as confirmation of whether it will be a brand-new story or not, or whether it will be another isekai tale (people from the real world magically appearing in Hyrule).

But back to Mario. It’s his time to shine after all. The way Nintendo usually likes to handle these anniversaries means we could get a new anthology of remasters or remixes of older games in the series, or ports of more recent entries that have been languishing on old hardware like Super Mario Galaxy (I’m still holding out hope for Super Mario Galaxy 3 myself). Another Switch Online exclusive multiplayer spin-off like Super Mario Bros. 35 doesn’t sound out of the question either. Maybe this time it’ll go from 2D side-scrolling to a Fall Guys-style 3D battle royale mode.

Finally, we know Nintendo loves its limited-edition accessories and merchandise. A Mario Bros. 40th anniversary Switch 2, new Amiibo, and new Switch 2 Joy-Con colors feel like an easy prediction. More exciting would be some new sort of dedicated device like the Nintendo Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros., only this time with more than just the first two games. And what’s going on with that detachable dual-screen add-on that Nintendo patented? Could the Switch 2 finally get DS games coming to its subscription service?

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 deserves a Switch 2 upgrade

If the original Switch taught us anything, it’s that Nintendo loves double-dipping. Half of the first-party library for that console was just Wii U games. And I fully expect the company to maintain that pattern with Switch 2 by continuing to roll out free and paid upgrades for older games. A recent Monolith Soft job posting on social media included fresh footage of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 that appeared to show it running at a much higher resolution. Those open-world RPGs have always struggled on the first Switch, leaving fans pining not only for Xenoblade Chronicles 4 on Switch 2 but also upgrades for the last two numbered entries. They’re also still waiting to see what’s up with Xenoblade Chronicles X‘s hidden 60fps mode.

There are also still lots of other old games Nintendo can pull onto the Switch 2 in one form or another. A Wii U HD remaster of Twilight Princess is still MIA on modern platforms, and the original Luigi’s Mansion could be remastered or added to the GameCube library on Switch Online. Nintendo’s also getting ready to release Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (a release date reveal at this Direct would be nice!) and yet two of the games in the original trilogy still aren’t available to play on Switch.

Smash Bros., Animal Crossing, and Mother 3

Beyond the next Mario, there are plenty of other Nintendo franchises that are ripe for their next entries. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is five years old now, and Smash Bros. Ultimate got its last DLC character in 2021. Despite multiple remakes in the series since, the last new Luigi’s Mansion was in 2019. It’s not quite time for a new Fire Emblem but we are getting close. And what about Nintendo’s back-bench franchises like Star Fox, Punch-Out, and Pilotwings? The company loves pulling from the past just as much as building new things.

Speaking of new things, a new Splatoon spin-off called Raiders was teased earlier this year and will no doubt make an appearance at the Direct if it’s coming out any time in the next 12 months. It would also be nice to see more of FromSoftware’s upcoming Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods. There’s also no word on what Platinum Games is working on for the console. Could Switch 2 be getting Bayonetta 4 or Astral Blades 2 anytime soon? And I know Team Ninja has been very busy lately, but it would be neat to see Marvel Ultimate Alliance 4 confirmed.

The deepest cut of all would be Mother 3, the GBA game never officially localized in the West but which is already available through Switch Online in Japan. There was a big exhibit for the series in Tokyo this summer, and this year marks the 30th anniversary of Earthbound coming out in the U.S. Meanwhile, 2026 will mark the 20th anniversary for Mother 3. Series creator Shigesato Itoi is already 76 and not getting any younger. It’s time. Seriously. Just give us Mother 3. Hell, give us Mother 4! Or even a 3D remake of Earthbound. How much money do I need to spend these Earthbound figures to make it happen?

Liverpool top dogs as EA Sports FC 26 reveals highest rated Premier League and WSL players

by admin September 10, 2025

EA Sports has revealed the top 26 players in both the Premier League and WSL for EA Sports FC 26.

In the men’s top league, after a dominant romp to the title last season Liverpool have come out on top with 8 players in the top 26, just beating Arsenal who have 7.

With a few high-profile departures as club legends reached the end of their time up North, Man City have just 5, including 2 downgrades for Rodri and Dias and 2 new players in Donnarumma and Reijnders.

Newcastle and Chelsea have 2 midfielders in the top 26 a piece, while Youri Tielemans makes it for Villa with Bruno Fernandes rounding out the list as the last vestigial reminder of Manchester United at the top end of the Premier League.

In the WSL though, underdog Champion’s League winners Arsenal have 3 players in the top 5, but it’s 6-in-a-row title winners Chelsea who have the most strength in depth, with a mighty 11 of the 26 highest rated WSL players (despite downgrades for key players like Sam Kerr and Lauren James following injury-hit seasons).

New additions include the popular Ultimate Team pick Grace Geyoro after her move from PSG to London City Lionesses (however that does mean she now no longer links with male PSG players), as well as Chelsea defender Naomi Girma who was the first women’s player to be transferred for more than $1 million.

These ratings come after the top 26 male and female players from every league around the world were revealed earlier this week, with Lamine Yamal seeing a huge +8 upgrade while Mo Salah and Kylian Mbappe claimed the top spots.

The full FC 26 database will be revealed on September 12, but the list of new Icons joining Ultimate Team is already out, including legendary names like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andres Iniesta and Francesco Totti.

EA Sports FC 26 drops, fittingly, on September 26 for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles as well as PC.
