What we’ve been playing – “enjoy the rest of your evening going around in circles and dying lots”

by admin September 13, 2025

13th September

Hello and welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we’ve been playing. This week, we’ve been banging our heads on Hollow Knight Silksong and trying to decide, for the most part, whether we love it or not. One moment we do, one moment we don’t. But that’s not all we’ve been playing. Tom’s been struggling with technology again, Bertie’s fallen down another rabbit hole, and Dom dug out the old Final Fantasy Tactics ahead of the remastered one’s late September arrival.

What have you been playing?

Hollow Knight Silksong, Xbox Series X

The other night, I let my children watch me play Silksong before they went to bed. They probably sat with me for about 20 minutes before I paused to tuck them in. “Goodnight my love, sleep well,” I said to my daughter. She replied, with complete sincerity: “Goodnight Mama, enjoy the rest of your evening going around in circles and dying lots.”

She wasn’t wrong.

Final Fantasy Tactics, PS1 (via emulator)

Ahead of the re-release of Final Fantasy Tactics, I’ve been replaying the original and revelling in how timely, how important and how beautiful a story Yasumi Matsuno concocted back in 1997. Nearly 30 years old and more relevant than ever, this game – set in Ivalice, the best Final Fantasy setting by the way – examines the importance of resistance. It examines what it looks like to be radicalised in a world that strives to separate people. It studies the necessity of violence in revolution. It does not shy away from the responsibility of those that hold a platform. I think the re-release has accidentally happened upon some remarkable timing, here, and I can’t wait for more people to play this timeless gem. I think it’s one of the most important games of my lifetime.

Prologue: Go Wayback! PC

That weather! That environment! All procedurally generated. I’ve got lots of thoughts. It’s fascinating.Watch on YouTube

An orienteering game made by the creator of PUBG? Um, okay then. But actually it’s much more than that. And actually, an orienteering game is right up my street. Prologue: Go Wayback is more of a technical demo in reality. A proof of concept of some industry-shaking tech Brendan Greene, the creator of PUBG, has been spearheading at newish studio PlayerUnknown Productions. His broad goal: procedural worlds – a familiar pipe dream. Prologue: Go Wayback is the planetary-level glimpse of it in action, and it’s an exciting one. I love stuff like this. I love big ideas. Expect more coverage to come!

Steam Deck, Steam Deck

I’m glad we’re writing short little updates in this article now, as otherwise you’d have to read two or more paragraphs on how I’ve spent about six hours (more or less all my free-time over the course of a week) trying to sort out a Steam Deck that was stuck updating. My tip is this: just leave it for as long as you can, and then it might just “blip” into life at 3am while you’re trying to sleep!

Crow Country, PC

Crow Country trailer.Watch on YouTube

I’ll level with you. I’m still playing No Man’s Sky and faffing around with its shiny new customisable Corvettes, but that’s probably not something you need to hear me go on about for the third weekend in a row. Instead, a quick thing on the only other game I’ve had time for this week: Crow Country. Eurogamer contributor (and horror connoisseur) Vikki Blake was a big fan of this when she reviewed it last year, so it’s been on my list for a while. Essentially, it’s a bit of a riff on the old survival horrors of yore, its retro-inspired aesthetic helping give the whole thing a wonderfully uncanny feel. 20 minutes in, I’m yet to see a single crow, but its abandoned theme park setting – lovingly rendered in an artstyle that feels more Little Big Adventure than it does Resident Evil – is a treat, and I’m excited to play more.

-Matt

Hollow Knight Silksong, Switch 2

The first 10 or so hours of Silksong were sublime: the atmosphere beautiful, the writing elegant, the boss battles nicely pitched. I was in love. But since then that love has turned to hatred. I’ve got stuck on bosses with infuriating runbacks. I’ve screamed at tiny critters placed at just the wrong location for maximum frustration. I’ve felt helpless against extensive gauntlets. And then I go back to exploring, I beat a boss at last, and marvel at the beautiful presentation of yet another inventive environment. I have a real love/hate thing going with Silksong. But that’s the Soulslike way, right?

These Limited-Edition NFL Echo Dot Bundles Hit an All-Time Low Right as the Football Season Kicks Off

by admin September 13, 2025

The weather is cooling down. The leaves will be changing soon. And football season has officially begun. Any true fan it’s going to have some memorabilia of their favorite team. Most of them just sit there for display, but not this. Amazon’s Echo Dot now comes bundled with miniature NFL helmets. There are 32 different options, one for each NFL team in these limited-edition bundles. And then beyond that, you have your choice of color for the Echo dot itself, coming in either charcoal, glacier white, or deep sea blue.

Amazon currently has a sale going on for the NFL Echo Dot bundle, but not for every team. Between each helmet and Echo Dot color, I’ve taken on the tedious task of clicking on all 96 combinations to confirm which are on sale and which are still full price. After going through the full league, I can confirm only one set is on sale—the Green Bay Packers. All three color options for the Wisconsin team are $25 off, bringing the price down to just $85. Cheeseheads get to live large this week. Sorry all other NFL fans in the country, but you’ll be paying full price for your team’s limited-edition NFL Echo Dot bundle.

Vibrant Sound, Small Package

Why even get an Echo Dot in the first place? Well this smart speaker, despite it’s small stature, is capable of producing powerful sound with a rich and deep bass. It’s got a front-firing 1.73-inch speaker which pumps out room-filling audio.

Streaming from you Echo Dot, be it music, podcasts, or audiobooks, comes through with clear vocals. It uses lossless HD audio from a handful for streaming services, Amazon Music HD included. Beyond Amazon’s own stuff, the Echo Dot can play from Apple Music, Spotify, SiriusXM, and more. Control the volume or start and stop the track with simple voice commands.

Not just a speaker, the Echo Dot is first and foremost a smart home hub. You can control other smart products in your home by just asking Alexa. Use it to adjust settings on your TV. Change the lights from off to on or dim them without getting up from the couch. You can set cooking times, ask questions, create calendar events and so much more. You can even connect with family and friends who also have an Echo device or even just the Alexa app on their phone. Use multiple Echos to communicate between rooms of your house if you so please.

Come grab the NFL Echo Dot bundle (exclusively the Green Bay Packers edition) for the reduced price of $85.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond finally gets release date, plus Samus on a motorbike

by admin September 13, 2025

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has finally received a release date from Nintendo, following months of speculation.

As revealed at today’s Nintendo Direct livestream, Metroid Prime 4 will release on 4th December across both Switch and Switch 2.

The announcement came with a fresh look at the game, including Samus on a motorbike. Yes, you read that correctly.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Direct 9.12.2025Watch on YouTube

Back in June, an advertisement for the game was seen on the London Underground stating the game was “out now”, though this was swiftly debunked by Nintendo.

Still, while the game officially had a 2025 launch window, rumours of a delay intensified over the summer, though Nintendo remained committed to a release this year.

In July the game popped up on the Korean ratings board and then, a month later, was rated by the ESRB. As such, a proper release date has been hotly anticipated.

Metroid Prime 4 is the long-awaited latest entry in Nintendo’s sci-fi series, that once again follows bounty hunter Samus Aran in first-person. This time, though, she’s got psychic powers.

I went hands-on with Metroid Prime 4 at Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch event, but wasn’t completely convinced by its mouse controls.

New Fire Emblem Announced And It Looks Like A Three Houses Spin-Off

by admin September 13, 2025

The next Fire Emblem is called Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, it arrives on Switch 2 in 2026, and it’s taking fans back to the world of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The strategy RPG’s reveal trailer showed students embarking on a bloody new classroom: a Roman Empire-style Colosseum.

While there’s no official mention of Three Houses in today’s Nintendo Direct announcement, house crest stones from the 2019 tactics game for the original Switch are clearly visible on some of the weapons in the reveal, suggesting Fortune’s Weave will be another game set in that world. Otherwise we don’t get a whole lot of detail about the upcoming game beyond the idea that teams will be competing in Colosseum-style games while also battling other threats outside the city walls. A ruler called the “Divine Sovereign” promises to grant the wish of whoever wins the tournament.

Here’s our first look:

Yes, Fire Emblem is back, with characters as cool and grid-based combat UI as ugly as ever. The trailer also ends with a surprise: Sothis sitting on a throne. The mysterious green-haired girl from Three Houses had the ability to manipulate time, and appeared in both younger and older forms. That leaves it to fans to speculate as to whether Fortunte’s Weave will act as a sequel or prequel to the original.

Arriving just three years after Fire Emblem Engage, it perhaps shouldn’t be too surprising that Intelligent Systems’ next entry in the long-running tactics franchise doesn’t look like a complete graphical overhaul. The cinematic animations, character art, and cutscenes all look excellent for the series’ Switch 2 debut, though I’m hungrier for a deeper reworking of the isometric battle views fans spend most of their time looking at while actually playing the game.

Still, it’s clear Intelligent Systems is still holding a lot back about this newest entry. Given all of the cool character interactions and cozy-sim systems in Three Houses, I’m excited to see how those aspects of the game evolve in Fortunte’s Weave.

Nintendo reveals new Fire Emblem game coming to Switch 2

by admin September 13, 2025

A new Fire Emblem game has been revealed at today’s Nintendo Direct.

Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave, as it’s known, will be released in 2026.

It’s the latest in the tactical RPG series, check out a gameplay trailer below.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave – Nintendo Direct 9.12.2025Watch on YouTube

Judging by the reveal, it’ll feature plenty of cinematic anime scenes, as well as the tile-based battles the series is known for. Story-wise, it appears to revolve around some form of Colosseum setup.

Fire Emblem Three Houses was a huge success for Nintendo on Switch that brought the series to new heights of popularity. It was followed by Fire Emblem Engage that was less well-received.

Let’s hope Fortune’s Weave is a significant step on for the series.

Battlefield 6 Devs Explain Adding The Controversial Quick Turn

Battlefield 6 Devs Explain Adding The Controversial Quick Turn

by admin September 12, 2025

In August, the Battlefield 6 open beta was a massive success and one of the most played games of the year. But there was a controversial “quick turn” setting included in the beta that caused some debate online. And when I asked the devs why it was added, they said: Balance and customization.

Earlier this week, Kotaku sat down with two Battlefield 6 devs to discuss the game’s console ports, and I had to ask about the quick turn feature. People online suggested it looked like cheating and was too OP. Others claimed it helped balance BF6 by giving controller players a chance to turn around quickly. According to Matthew Nickerson, senior console combat designer on Battlefield 6, balancing the game was indeed one reason it was added.

This is a must have setting in #Battlefield6 Flick Look allows you to achieve an instant quick 180 in combat! pic.twitter.com/ElMW1yvrhh

— TacticalBrit (@TheTacticalBrit) August 7, 2025

“The inherent issue of including aim assist on controller,” Nickerson told Kotaku,  “[is that] you constantly are doing a big sweeping motion [while looking around], you’re constantly going full speed, and then you hit the bubbles of aim assist, and it automatically slows down. So you’re kind of constantly fighting these systems that are preventing you from quickly 180 turning.”

Adding a quick flip option was a “huge win” that solved a “lot of issues” that exist when playing on a controller against mouse and keyboard players.

“You know, you get shot in the back [and] it’s frustrating to be a controller player those days,” added Nickerson.

According to him, making sure crossplay was balanced, fair, and fun was a huge goal for the entire team working on Battlefield 6. So the quick turn option, officially known as “Flick Stick,” was one more way to keep crossplay competitive for all.

The other reason for adding it? Well, because it’s cool and gives players one more way to customize their controls and gameplay. And combined with the PS5’s gyro controls, Flick Stick can do some “really cool stuff.” Plus, Nickerson told Kotaku it helps give console players more ways to interact with the game despite gamepads having far fewer buttons than a keyboard.

“If you want to reload [or turn around], maybe you just flick on your controller upright, and it activates the gyro, so it’s like another new layer of customizability,” said Nickerson.

I’m not sure I’ll be using gyro controls in Battlefield 6 when it launches on October 10 on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. But you’d better believe I’ll have a button set for turning around instantly so I can at least I can see the person killing me from behind.

Dragon Quest 7 is getting a full remake – and it’s not HD-2D

by admin September 12, 2025

Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is getting the full remake treatment, as revealed at today’s Nintendo Direct stream.

Unlike the HD-2D remakes of the original Dragon Quest trilogy previously released and revealed, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined has a new hand-crafted 3D style that expands on the pixel art of the original PS1 release.

Reimagined will also include revamped battle mechanics, a “significantly streamlined” story that’s set to be pacier and more accessible, and other quality of life improvements.

DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined | Announcement TrailerWatch on YouTube

Dragon Quest 7 is considered one of the high points of the series, and was one of the highest-selling PS1 games in Japan.

This isn’t the first time it’s received a remake either, as a Nintendo 3DS version was released in 2013 in Japan (and 2016 in America, Europe, and Australasia).

“Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a new version of Dragon Quest 7 that has been rebuilt from the ground up for modern audiences,” said producer Takeshi Ichikawa on the Square Enix blog.

“When we decided to remake Dragon Quest 7, we thought deeply about the visual direction. We wanted audiences worldwide, not just in Japan, to grow fond of the charming characters designed by Akira Toriyama.

“So, in order to depict the depth and feel of Dragon Quest 7’s story more vividly, we took on a new challenge for the Dragon Quest series: employing a hand-crafted art style and developing in-game environments that resembles dioramas.”

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is due for release on 5th February 2026 across Switch consoles, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (Steam, Microsoft).

It will follow Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, which has proven hugely successful in Japan, as well as the forthcoming HD-2D remakes of the first and second games due next month.

Ghost Of Yotei Dev Fired Over Charlie Kirk Joke After Pressure Campaign

by admin September 12, 2025

A contingent of right-wing online figures and their followers have been using the recent assassination of conservative podcaster Charlie Kirk to punish people they don’t like. That includes a developer at Ghost of Yotei maker Sucker Punch Productions who Sony confirms it has parted ways with after she made a joke on social media about the shooting.

“I hope the shooter’s name is Mario so that Luigi knows his bro got his back,” Drew Harrison, a nearly 10-year veteran of the PlayStation studio, posted in the evening after Kirk was shot and killed during a speaking event at Utah Valley University. A few hours later, the post was screen-grabbed and shared by anti-woke crusader Mark “Grummz” Kern.

“Suckerpunch Senior Dev celebrates Charlie Kirk’s death,” he wrote. “Ghost of Yotei is dead to me now.” A streamer who goes by Madamsavvy responded, “No more. Cowards keep quiet. The studio deserves to go under.” Kern replied, “No mercy.”

Harrison subsequently shared on social media that people had been contacting her employer angrily trying to get her fired, and posted a screenshot of a barrage of missed calls from anonymous numbers as evidence of an ongoing harassment campaign. Less than 24 hours later, she was fired.

“If standing up against fascism is what cost me my dream job I held for 10 years, I would do it again 100x stronger,” she wrote.

Sony confirmed her departure in an email to Kotaku but declined to comment further. “Drew Harrison is no longer an employee of Sucker Punch Productions,” a spokesperson from Sony Interactive Entertainment wrote.

1 It’s a game. An entertainment. A story a team of creators believes in. They want to make this.

2 it’s a game. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. In fact, why not make the game you want yourself?

— shawn layden 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🇺🇸🇯🇵 (@ShawnLayden) September 25, 2024

A loosely aligned “Gamergate 2.0” movement that grew out of conspiracy theories claiming DEI was ruining gaming has been hoping for this sort of outcome for months. The big PS5 exclusive has been in anti-woke activists’ firing line ever since Ghost of Yotei revealed the open-world samurai series’ latest entry would star a woman named Atsu, played by Erika Ishii.

Fed by an algorithmically juiced YouTube rage factory, certain online culture content creators latched onto one of Ishii’s past comments about abolishing the police as a way to attack the game. Videos with titles like “Ghost of Yōtei DOOMED? Radical Activist Erika Ishii Brings Woke Chaos!” later changed to things like “Ghost Of Yotei New Trailer Sparks BACKLASH, Hiring Activists Backfires For Sony & Sucker Punch” as YouTubers combed LinkedIn for evidence proving that people with opinions they disagreed with were ruining games.

Ghost of Yotei is far from the only high-profile blockbuster game to be dragged into this culture war quicksand. Kern and others attacked Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows as well for featuring an African samurai as one of its two main characters. Developers on the game were reportedly told not to comment on the harassment campaign when the game launched earlier this year.

While Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot condemned attacks targeting employees, he also said at the time the company was working on “tackling the dynamics behind the polarized comments around Ubisoft so as to protect the Group’s reputation and maximize our game’s sales potential.”

Members of the harassment campaign to get Harrison fired from Sucker Punch are already targeting individuals at other game studios and publishers over their social media comments. “Every single studio is compromised,” one of them wrote. “And it’s all American leftists doing this.”

Charlie Kirk Shooter Allegedly Had Bullet With Helldivers 2 Reference On It

by admin September 12, 2025

New information has surfaced in the federal investigation into the assassination of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk that includes a potentially unexpected link to Helldivers 2. Bullets left behind near the crime scene had markings on them, according to information shared at a news conference on Friday morning by Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, one of which included symbols that line up with a military Stratagem from last year’s hit sci-fi extraction game.

Investigators said Discord messages from the suspected shooter led them to believe he had engraved the writings on bullets he used to kill Kirk at a Utah Valley University event earlier this week. A bolt-action rifle with a scope was recovered from a wooded area near the school on Thursday, with unfired bullets containing engravings on the casings.

🚨Spencer Cox confirms writings on bullet casings and says they included “hey, fascist” and “if you read this, you are gay LMAO.” pic.twitter.com/9gow1IhynD

— Off The Press (@OffThePress1) September 12, 2025

One of the casings reportedly had the words “Hey fascists! Catch!” on it alongside an up arrow, right arrow, and three down arrows.

While that last part might seem meaningless to most people, Helldivers 2 players immediately understood it to be a reference to the Eagle 500kg Bomb stratagem which requires players to input those button presses on their keyboard or their controller’s d-pad in order to call down a giant payload that explodes moments later.

⇧⇨⇩⇩⇩ (Up, Right, Down, Down, Down) is an orbital stratagem code from the game Helldivers II. It calls in an Eagle airstrike that drops a 500K bomb — the most destructive piece of single ordinance in the game. https://t.co/GzMvH9Dxrj pic.twitter.com/7M2nfvQFGJ

— Steve Skojec (@SteveSkojec) September 12, 2025

It’s not yet clear if the suspected shooter, Tyler Robinson, who was recently arrested in connection with the assassination, meant for the engraving to be connected to Helldivers 2 or what significance that reference would have had in connection with the crime.

What is Helldivers 2?

Helldivers 2 was made by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony for PlayStation 5 and PC early last year, instantly becoming one of 2025’s most popular games after selling over 10 million copies. The multiplayer shooter has players step into the shoes of space marines as they battle alien threats across the galaxy as a parody of sci-fi fascism in the vein of Starship Troopers.

Helldivers 2 came to Xbox Series X/S just last month and has continued to be one of the most played games on PC and console in part due to constantly-evolving in-game storytelling and a robust social community of dedicated players. Players team up, go down to random planet surfaces, complete mini-objective while dodging waves of hostile aliens, and repeatedly die in often absurd ways thanks to the game’s complex ragdoll physics.

Players have been flooding the game’s Discord today following the press conference sharing their shock and disgust, as well as debating whether Arrowhead Game Studios should make a statement addressing the situation. Robinson’s name has already been banned from the Helldivers 2 Discord servers so that any attempt to mention the suspected shooter by name is automatically filtered out.

“Weird day to be a Helldivers mod”

On the game’s subreddits, which include over 1.5 million members, fans have been trying to process the news. “Not for nothing, but it’s gonna be weird to have one of these tattoos,” one player wrote in a thread referencing a past photo shared by someone over a year ago with a tattoo of the same Eagle 500kg Bomb stratagem reportedly referenced on Robinson’s bullets. “Don’t let some delusional person take what’s ours,” wrote another.

“Community is necessary because of events like this,” wrote one of the subreddit’s moderators. “If we as people spent more time learning about each other and overcoming our differences instead of bickering we might actually achieve equity and not just equality. As Helldivers it’s our responsibility to keep those we love and are sworn to protect safe from outside evils.  Sometimes those evils exist within our own society.”

Politicians have long tried to link gun violence with video games, including President Donald Trump. Earlier this week, health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said his department was looking into any potential links between gaming and increases in school shootings. The U.S. suffers from exponentially more school shootings than other countries, despite having the same number of video games.

Update 9/12/2025 12:53 p.m. ET: Added more reactions from Helldivers 2 players.
