As PlayStation physical game sales drop, it’s no wonder Sony is pushing digital-only consoles

by admin September 17, 2025

Sales of physical software accounted for just three percent of PlayStation sales last year, according to Sony’s latest corporate report.

Considering the company’s total gaming division sales in 2024 were 4,670bn yen (around $31.77bn by today’s conversion), Sony still made around $953m in physical software sales (as a rough estimate).

However, that number has dropped from six percent of sales back in 2020. It’s no wonder Sony’s PS5 consoles are primarily digital-only when fewer consumers are buying physical games, even with the option of a disc drive. Or has there been a decline in physical games because of the digital-only consoles? And with reports the PS6 will also be digital-only with an optional disc drive, it’s a trend that’s only set to continue.

Astro Bot – Launch Trailer | PS5 GamesWatch on YouTube

By comparison, hardware makes up 24 percent of sales, though that’s a given considering the high cost of consoles – a price that keeps getting higher. That’s increased from 19 percent in 2020.

Digital software sales, meanwhile, account for 20 percent of revenue – a huge margin compared with physical sales.

Add-on content (DLC, effectively), accounts for 29 percent of sales, the biggest revenue driver of all. It’s no wonder, then, Sony is so keen to push live-service games – its report highlights the success of Helldivers 2, Destiny 2, Gran Turismo and MLB The Show, as well as noting the “eagerly awaited Marathon”.

Interestingly, the proportion of network services sales has dropped since 2020 from 17 to 14 percent (perhaps due to the rise in hardware sales). However, since 2022, monthly active users have increased 14 percent to 124 million accounts in 2024.

Another reason for the lower physical software sales last year could be the limited number of first-party games released, which tend to be bought more as physical editions. Astro Bot was the company’s biggest release last year, which sold 1.5m in its first month, but it was otherwise a quiet year.

PlayStation’s decline in physical game sales parallels Nintendo’s struggles with Switch 2. As game sizes have increased, it’s become more difficult to squeeze them onto physical media – that’s why Switch 2 uses game key cards that act as a key for a download. But with digital storage at a premium, it means massive games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake will take up huge amounts of capacity.

New Sonic Racing Crossworlds Ad Attacks Mario Kart World

by admin September 17, 2025

Good morning! I hope this Tuesday goes well for you. I think we all deserve a nice Tuesday. But even if today sucks, at least we have Morning Checkpoint, Kotaku’s daily roundup of video game news and other stuff you might care about. Today, we have a wild Sega ad, an actor from MindsEye dealing with the negative reviews, more Game Pass games, and someone on a soap opera mentioning Xenoblade.

Sega Goes Full ’90s And Attacks Nintendo In New Ad

Sonic Racing Crossworlds is out next week, and ahead of the kart racer’s launch, Sega has put out a new advertisement that feels like it fell out of 1995. In the short video ad, Sega obviously–but for legal reasons, not directly–calls out Mario Kart World and compares it to its upcoming racing game. It suggests the open world of Nintendo’s latest kart racer is boring and tells fans to instead play its upcoming Sonic racing game instead. It even shows pixelated footage of what looks like Mario Kart World and dunks on the game for not being multiplatform. Here’s the ad:

Damn, Sega. Of course, I don’t think Nintendo will care much, considering how well Mario Kart World has already sold and will continue to sell for the next decade. But it’s nice to go back to a time when the console wars were mostly a silly thing and not the rantings of weird techno-cults we have online now.

MindsEye’s Lead Actor Was Worried He Might Never Get Another Role

In a recent interview with FRVR, actor Alex Hernandez talked about what it’s like to be the lead character in a video game that flops as badly as MindsEye did earlier this year. As you might expect, it seems like a horrible experience!

“It’s a difficult thing to spend two-and-a-half years on a project that you’re really proud of and you’re proud of your contribution to it,” said the actor who plays the lead character in the game. “And I only had positive experiences working on it. The people I was working with, I was proud for them, of them, I wanted it to be a success for them just as much for myself.”

The actor told the outlet in a podcast that he was worried about his future in the industry after his face was plastered on what many consider the worst game of 2025.

“Just the response… I was like, ‘I might never work in a game again.’ Because one of the caveats of being the face on the box is that people, rightly or wrongly, will associate all of their opinions and, more importantly, their emotions, about this game with my face,” said Hernandez. “After about two days of allowing myself to wallow, and my wife being very supportive…You move on. Because for me to sit in that wallowing, it doesn’t allow me to learn.”

Xbox Adds Hades, Modern Warfare 3, And 12 More Titles To Game Pass This Month

A whole smorgasbord of games is coming to Xbox’s various Game Pass tiers throughout the rest of the month. Starting today, Game Pass Ultimate and Standard subscribers can download and play RoadCraft. Then, on September 17, a bunch of games hop onto Game Pass Standard, including Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Then on the very next day, Hades returns to Game Pass to celebrate its five-year anniversary. Later in the month, Visions of Mana, a Peppa Pig game, and Lara Croft: Guardian of Light all arrive on Game Pass, too. So many games to play, so little time. Try to squeeze as many in as you can before October robs us all of our free time.

Palworld Leaving Early Access Next Year With ‘Massive’ 1.0 Update

In a new video posted on Palworld’s official YouTube channel, the game’s communications director and publishing manager, John “Bucky” Buckley, explained that developer PocketPair had reached a “crossroads” after shipping multiple big updates since launching in 2024. While the team has a “lot of ideas” for what to do next, the devs are also thinking about getting Palworld out of early access. But that will take a lot of “clean up.”

“It’s not [a] secret that Palworld has a lot of quirks and jank, and we want to take the time to properly address those before releasing the game,” explained Buck. “With that in mind, we plan to start clean-up this year. Our goal is to ultimately release Palworld next year, in 2026, and we think taking the time now to fix those problems will ultimately lead to a better game.”

This clean-up process means that the game’s upcoming winter update won’t be as big as previous content updates, but the goal is to ship a massive update in 2026 that will push the game into 1.0 status and out of early access.

“Palworld 1.0 will be a major milestone for us,” said Buck. “And we have a truly massive amount of content planned for the 1.0 update. Rather than rushing it, we believe that laying the foundation now will lead to a better game in the end.”

Easy queasy: Borderlands 4 FOV sliders may be coming to console

by admin September 17, 2025

One technical issue the console version of Borderlands 4 is facing is a lack of a customisable field of vision slider, as the game has on PC. Currently the console FOV is low and the zoomed-in perspective is making some players feel sick.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford polled console players recently about how strongly they felt about changing this, and three quarters of respondents felt very strongly about it. So, Gearbox appears to be doing something about it.

“We have heard your feedback on FOV (Field of View) sliders on console,” Gearbox announced on the Borderlands 4 X account. “The team is currently exploring how to bring these sliders to both Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions. We will continue to read your feedback & prioritise game updates with your experience in mind.”

Borderlands 4 had a popular opening weekend but is facing some backlash on PC for its technical performance there. Randy Pitchford took to X over the weekend to tell players they needed to make some graphical trade-offs if they wanted high frame-rates, and suggested high frame-rates weren’t, in a campaign-based looter shooter like this, the studio’s top priority. “It’s not a competitive FPS,” he said.

Our Borderlands 4 review is currently in the works.

KPop Demon Hunters Writer Says He Used AI To Write ‘Soda Pop’

by admin September 17, 2025

OpenAI officially has a Korean office. Normally, that wouldn’t be news we would cover here at Kotaku, but KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix’s animated musical phenomenon, was apparently brought up during the generative AI organization’s launch event for its new Korean subsidiary on Monday, September 15. Vince, a prolific K-pop producer who wrote songs performed by the film’s demonic boy band group called the Saja Boys, made an appearance at the Seoul event. That’s annoying in and of itself, but he also apparently dropped the bomb that he used AI to help write the group’s infectious song “Soda Pop.”

OpenAI technical staff member Sherwin Wu said in a since-deleted tweet that Vince said he used ChatGPT to write “Soda Pop,” and that the generative chatbot “gave him ideas to make it sound ‘more bubbly.’” This occurred during an on-stage discussion with Oliver Jay, OpenAI’s Chief Business Officer. Korea Joongang Daily reports that Vince said this was an example of how AI is “already used in K-pop production,” but this is notably not a direct quote, as the original article was written in Korean and “translated by a bilingual reporter with the help of generative AI tools.” The publication’s original Korean article includes mentions of Vince using ChatGPT, but doesn’t call out KPop Demon Hunters or “Soda Pop” by name. We’ve reached out to the outlet for clarification.

At the moment, there doesn’t seem to be footage of Vince’s talk on the internet, but we’ve reached out to Netflix and OpenAI for comment on the situation. Based on these accounts, it sounds like Vince used ChatGPT to help ideate the song that would eventually become “Soda Pop,” but AI was not used to generate the song that appears in the film. Rei Ami, one of the vocalists behind the voices of the fictional girl group Huntr/x, has been very vocal about the real people behind every performance in the film ever since accusations of AI use have sprouted up in the wake of the film’s colossal popularity.

Even if the final song is all produced and sung by real people, fans are feeling burned knowing AI may have played any part in the creation of the film, given its worldwide success and how it’s become a poster child for people advocating for new ideas in the animation industry in the face of never-ending sequel slop. We’ll update this story if we hear back from Netflix or if Vince makes an official statement.

Netflix sensation KPop Demon Hunters headed to Fortnite in new crossover, leaks suggest – we must be getting Huntr/x skins, right?

by admin September 17, 2025

KPop Demon Hunters is headed to Fortnite, according to the latest leaks.

If you’re somehow unaware, KPop Demon Hunters is an animated film from Sony Pictures depicting a fantastical take on the South Korean pop industry. Not only have the songs (sung by prominent KPop artists) dominated music charts, the film itself is the most watched original title in Netflix history.

It’s no wonder, then, a crossover with Fortnite is on the way, as spotted by Fortnite leakers SpushFNBR and Loolo. It’s gonna be golden for sure.

“Golden” Official Lyric Video | KPop Demon Hunters | Sony AnimationWatch on YouTube

But what might the crossover include? The most obvious would be dance emotes based on songs from the film, which each have their own dance routines. I can’t wait to see Metal Gear Solid’s Solid Snake dancing along to Soda Pop.

Skins based on the three Huntr/x singers would also work, considering they’re also fighters alongside being in a pop band.

Just as KPop is taking over the music charts, games from South Korea are proving extremely popular too – as proven recently by the huge success of Stellar Blade on PC.

How Shift Codes And Gold Keys Work In Borderlands 4

How Shift Codes And Gold Keys Work In Borderlands 4

by admin September 17, 2025

Borderlands 4 is out now! Yay, that’s exciting. However, on PC, it has some performance problems that might dampen your enjoyment. But hey, whatever, you’re here because you want to figure out how Shift Codes work and how to get Gold Keys in Borderlands 4. It’s a weird and some might say unnecessary system, but I’ll help walk you through it. And by the end you’ll be good to go.

First, before we go any further, you need to create a free Shift account. Shift is Gearbox’s very own video game network… thing. It has been around since Borderlands 2, and the website for Shift has basically not changed since then, so it looks old, but it is pretty easy to use. Just hop over to the Shift site and make a free account. Next, you’ll want to link whatever platform you play on, like Xbox, to your new Shift account. To do that, look to the top left of the website and click “Gaming Platforms.” Then select your platform and follow the steps to log in and get everything all synced up. Okay, now, you can start redeeming Shift codes. But first…

What Are Shift Codes?

That’s a great question! Here’s a sticker. Shift codes are alphanumeric codes that are handed out by official Gearbox and Borderlands-related accounts, often on social media. These codes will provide an in-game reward when correctly redeemed. Many people can use a single Shift code, but they often have expiration dates, so older codes might not work.

One of the best and most frequent providers of new Shift codes is Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford himself, so you might want to follow him on X. Sorry about that. And no, I don’t think Pitchford pushed to create Shift simply to get more followers online, but it’s a funny theory.

Technically, Shift codes exist for other Gearbox games, like Aliens: Colonial Marines and Battleborn, but uh… well, these days, 99 percent of Shift codes are connected to Borderlands and Wonderlands because nobody plays Gearbox’s other games. Anyway, once you have a Shift code, either from Pitchford or one of the many fan sites and accounts that catalog them, it’s time to enter that code on the Shift website!

How Do I Use A Shift Code?

There are two ways to enter a Shift code and gain its rewards. The first, and worst way, is to boot up the game the Shift code is connected to and enter the code via that title’s Shift screen. This is a cumbersome way to do this and has no benefits and many drawbacks. Do you really want to enter a long string of letters and numbers with an Xbox gamepad and on-screen keyboard? Nah.

©Gearbox / Kotaku

The better way to use your Shift Codes is to do so on your phone or PC. Once you’re logged into your Shift account, you can just copy the code and hop over to the website. Then you just click “Rewards” and pop your Shift code into the empty box.

Depending on the code, you’ll likely need to specify a platform. So, for example, if you put in a Shift code for a Gold Key in Borderlands 4, the game will ask you what platforms you want to redeem it on and show you every platform you have linked. Fun fact: Most codes can be reused for each connected platform. If you enter it in correctly, you’ll get a prompt letting you know, and the rewards feed below where you entered the code will update to show you what you just earned, in what game, and on which platform.

Wait, I Want Gold Keys, Not Shift Codes!

Calm down. Shift codes are how you get Gold Keys. And while it is true that not all Shift codes provide Gold Keys for various Borderlands games—some provide cosmetics and other bonuses—the vast majority of codes in 2025 will give you Gold Keys.

Just keep in mind that Gold Keys, once redeemed, can’t be used in any other Borderlands game. I have nearly 80 of the bastards waiting to be used in Borderlands 3, but none of them can make the leap to Borderlands 4. It makes me very sad.

How Do I Use These Gold Keys In Borderlands 4?

All Gold Keys in all Borderlands titles, including Borderlands 4, are used to open big gold chests that can be found in the hub areas of the various games. These chests have a high chance of dropping really good loot, including rare legendary guns and gear. In Borderlands 4, there are actually a few gold chests located at various safehouses and other points of interest, but be aware you can’t open a Gold chest until you unlock the Outbounder’s village near the starting area of the game in the Fadefields.

©Gearbox / Kotaku

To use a key, just go up to the chest and hit the open button. But be warned! You really shouldn’t do this until you are at least level 40, as early on in the game you’ll likely just replace whatever you get with better gear quickly as you level up. Also, if you’re playing with randos or greedy friends, be aware that the gear you get from the chest will fly out of it after 30 seconds or so, and at that point, anyone can grab it. This happened to me. I lost a great revolver. My friends laughed. I grew more bitter.

And that’s all you need to know about Shift codes and Gold Keys. If you want lots of Shift Codes for Borderlands 4, I’d recommend this account on Twitter that rounds them all up and posts them with a direct link to the Shift site, making it easy to snag some codes and keys on your phone while you are out and about. Or follow Randy Pitchford on Twitter, I guess?

How to fix Skate ‘connection lost’ error

by admin September 16, 2025

It’s been a long time coming, but it appears the wait will be even longer than anticipated.

Skating fans around the world are stoked to be back in the world of Skate for the first time in many years. They are so excited, in fact, that the game is breaking underneath the weight of gamers trying to connect, and it’s causing error codes galore.

Here’s what we know so far about issues with Skate, including the error code 3967269002.

How to fix Skate error code 3967269002

Screenshot by Destructoid

The Skate error code 3967269002 is happening a lot on the day of the game’s free-to-play launch on Sept. 16, 2025. It’s most likely due to the game’s servers being slammed by players attempting to log in all at once and/or download the game since there was no pre-load.

So far, we’ve been able to have success in getting into the game by just selecting “OK” and entering a new queue. As the game is being overloaded, players are being placed into a queue, and sometimes those queues are erroring out. Your best bet for now is to try re-queuing and getting into the game.

Odds are, though, that these errors, server issues, and queues will all need to be fixed by EA, and there’s not much you can do as a player besides waiting it out. In this always-online world of online gaming, these things tend to happen around big launches or updates, so it comes as no surprise that there are problems with playing the game.

Stay tuned to official EA communications for more info on the status of the game’s servers, especially in its first few days and weeks following launch.

Hollow Knight: Silksong Review - Punishing Grandeur

Hollow Knight: Silksong Review – Punishing Grandeur

by admin September 16, 2025

Hollow Knight: Silksong is an exemplar of its form. Games like Metroid and Castlevania helped establish the fun of an exploration and platforming adventure filled with upgrades that open up new paths to progression, and Team Cherry’s second Hollow Knight game takes that concept to a profound level of depth, sophistication, and scope. Pacing issues and a punishing approach to forward progression prevent a full-throated endorsement to every type of player, but those with significant patience can uncover a true masterpiece.

While there are some scant references to the prior game, players should be comfortable thinking of Silksong’s story as a standalone installment, in which a warrior princess bug named Hornet is taken against her will to a distant kingdom called Hallownest. After escaping, she seeks to uncover the reason for her kidnapping and the secrets of the place, gradually unfolding a story of ancient mysteries and the decayed remains of a sovereignty governed through the powers of silk and music. The worldbuilding is immaculate, from the visuals of a land that has fallen into ruin to the beautifully written dialogue between characters that fleshes out the fiction.

The environmental storytelling is backed up by rewarding exploration and traversal. Silksong’s world is truly vast, with an interconnected network of biomes that each contribute new threads to the web of understanding, from abandoned halls of long-forgotten experiments to clockwork machinery that drives the kingdom’s waning functions. Hidden paths abound, and the gradual unlocking of new shortcuts and areas that appear through the acquisition of abilities makes for a satisfying loop.

Several platforming sequences are highly challenging, demanding split-second pad/stick control for long and unforgiving stretches. I relish those challenges for their design and canny pathing, but the distance between rest points does little to contribute to that enjoyment. Instead, I found the insistence on extremely long checkpoint placement hampered the sense of pacing in several instances, since I was forced to repeatedly redo early and manageable sections just to get a chance to practice and perfect the later ones.

While combat encounters are frequent and demanding, they are tuned to reward careful attention and clever use of resources. Over the dozens of hours it takes to reach even the first of several endings, I consistently felt a sense of evolving control over the onscreen action, which is enhanced by several distinct crests, each of which alters movement, attacks, and available abilities in subtle but important ways. The distinct playstyles are yet one more way that Silksong layers in nuance.

I was especially fond of many of the bosses, which often have a wide variety of interesting movesets to learn and evocative visual themes that set each apart from the rest. In particular, bosses like Lace, Phantom, and the Cogwork Dancers feel rhythmic and intense, like impactful duels between master combatants.

While the boss battles themselves are a rewarding challenge, I can’t say I was always a fan of the extreme damage each dealt, often ending individual attempts in mere seconds, or the sponge-like health pools of most, which sometimes feel like a chore to work through, even after nailing the mechanics of the fight. The frequent insistence on long, gauntlet-like runbacks to retry a given battle exacerbates those issues, which reads more like an unnecessary time sink, rather than a fun addition to the difficulty.

Like many great games, all of Silksong’s systems, difficulty, and storytelling feel intentional and crafted to be as they are. Even as particular frustrations held back some measure of my potential enjoyment, I simultaneously marveled at the care that has gone into each detail of Silksong’s measured unraveling of plot and gameplay. Even beyond the credits, hours and hours of optional endings, additional zones and bosses, and new plot elements wait to be brought to light by a devoted player. It’s a truly immense game filled with hard-won moments of discovery and revelation.

Musicians know the feeling of a piece that is woven with complexity, which takes longer to learn than most, but brings commensurate satisfaction upon mastery; Silksong is the video game equivalent, sitting ready to be played and adored, but only after appropriate levels of devotion and persistence.

New Splinter Cell Trailer Picks A Canon Ending For Chaos Theory

New Splinter Cell Trailer Picks A Canon Ending For Chaos Theory

by admin September 16, 2025

The official trailer for Netflix and Ubisoft’s upcoming animated series, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, gives us a much better look at this new version of Sam Fisher and lets us hear more of Liev Schreiber as the aging operative. And while I was nervous at first, I now feel confident that Schreiber can pull this off. Now let’s just hope the show itself is good, too.

On September 16, Ubisoft released the official trailer for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch. The new animated show adapts Ubisoft’s popular stealth-action video game franchise into an episodic series that will premiere on Netflix exclusively on October 14. Here’s the trailer, which features Sam Fisher doing what you expect: sneaking around, wearing cool goggles, killing people with wire, and being cranky about stuff.

We get to hear more of Liev Schreiber’s take on Sam Fisher, and while it is different than the version established by Michael Ironside, I appreciate that he still sounds like an old guy who is about to snap at any point, and if he does, God help anyone caught in his way. While I’ll miss Ironside, who voiced the character in the original games, I’m happy that Sam is in good hands. And honestly, I’m just excited to get more Splinter Cell in any form.

In this new trailer, we learn more about what this show is actually about.  After a younger agent, Zinnia, gets her hands on some valuable intel, she comes to Sam Fisher for help. This brings Fisher into a mission that involves Douglas Shetland, a villainous character and former friend from the Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory games. His daughter is all grown up and running what appears to be an evil corporation of some kind. Uh oh!

Interestingly, in the trailer, we briefly see the ending of Chaos Theory, with Sam and Douglas standing with guns pointed at each other. It also seems like this series makes it canon that Sam Fisher shot Shetland. In the game, it was a choice between shooting him and not shooting him. If you didn’t pull the trigger, Shetland would shoot at Sam, forcing him to dodge Shetland’s attack before stabbing and killing him. It’s not 100% clear yet if Deathwatch is canon with the games, but if it is, I wonder what else the show will introduce into the franchise’s (surprisingly) sprawling lore.

Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is being written and produced by John Wick writer Derek Kolstad. It will be available on Netflix on October 14.
