Capcom will not “guarantee” Monster Hunter games can run on Windows 10 after October 14

by admin October 1, 2025

Capcom has warned it cannot “guarantee” its Monster Hunter games will run on Windows 10 from next month.

In a brief note thanking players for “enjoying Capcom products,” the Japanese firm said that from the day Microsoft ceases support for Windows 10, October 14, it will similarly ” no longer guarantee that Monster Hunter: World, Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Wilds will run on Windows 10 systems.”

“Monster Hunter: World, Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Wilds will still be possible to play on Windows 10 after October 14, 2025,” the company announced on Steam. “However, future system updates or game title updates may make the game incompatible on Windows 10 systems.

“Proper game functionality cannot be guaranteed on operating systems of which Microsoft has ended support,” it added. “If an issue running the game occurs, support can only be provided based on information from before support for Windows 10 was discontinued. Services for investigating problems regarding running the game on Windows 10 will be discontinued.”

Valve is also ceasing Steam support for systems running 32-bit versions of the Windows 10 operating system (OS) from January 1, 2026, but insisted that, according to results from its August 2025 Steam Hardware Survey, only 0.01% of users reported using the operating system.

Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto recently attributed the high price of the PlayStation 5 as a reason for low sales of Monster Hunter Wilds, which sold eight million copies in three days, making it the fastest-selling title in Capcom’s history.

How to get FRGMT x WNGMN+ gun buddy in VALORANT

by admin October 1, 2025

Want to flaunt an ultra-exclusive Wingman gun buddy? VALORANT’s latest collaboration with Fragment (FRGMT), a popular streetwear symbol, introduces high-quality merchandise and exciting gear, including a shiny new WNGMN+ gun buddy that’s locked under a special buyer’s clause.

Founded by Japanese streetwear designer Hiroshi Fujiwara, FRGMT is a design project, mainly recognized by its iconic double lightning bolt logo. Fujiwara has collaborated with several well-established brands, including Nike, Levi’s, Jordan, Pokémon, and now, VALORANT, to share his brand’s exclusivity with its fan base.

While VLRNT // FRGMT’s limited-edition merch is right up any fashionista gamer’s alley, it’s our buddy Wingman in sleek black that truly steals the spotlight. Here’s how to get all accessories, including the ultra-exclusive gun Wingman buddy, featured in the FRGMT x WNGMN capsule in VALORANT.

All items in FRGMT x WNGMN capsule in VALORANT and price

The FRGMT x WNGMN capsule is now live in VALORANT and offers the following items:

  1. FRGMT x WNGMN gun buddy
  2. WNGMN player title

Smooth, stylish, reliable. Image via Riot Games

You can purchase this capsule for 975 VP, which is around $9.99 in real money. The player title is included in the bundle for free. The capsule will be available for purchase until Oct. 15, so if you’re planning to get it, make sure to buy it before it leaves the store.

To describe the WNGMN gun buddy, it’s Wingman in a shiny black body with some white accents—and he’s carrying the Spike on his head. The iconic logo of FRGMT in white is imprinted on his belly.  It’s an interactive buddy, so every time you fire your gun, you’ll see streaks of lightning bolt out of your little man’s eyes.

But that’s not it. If you’re planning to dig into the VLRNT x FRGMT merch collection, you can earn a hyper exclusive version of the FRGMT x WNGMN gun buddy.

How to get the FRGMT x WNGMN+ gun buddy in VALORANT

The FRGMT x WNGMN+ gun buddy is included with the VLRNT // FRGMT WNGMN Plush; you don’t need to purchase the capsule bundle for this. All you need to do is buy the plush and redeem a code in-game to claim the gun buddy for free. Here’s how to do all that in detailed steps:

  1. Purchase the VLRNT // FRGMT WNGMN Plush for $62.19 from an official store. Here are the store details for every region:
  2. Upon receiving the plush, find the silver bar at the bottom of the hang tag and scratch it off to reveal your unique code.
  3. Open the Riot Code Redemption page on a browser and log into your account if you aren’t already. Enter the code in the text box.
  4. Hit Redeem Code.

Once done, you should be able to access the FRGMT x WNGMN+ gun buddy in VALORANT. This one looks slightly different from the original FRGMT x WNGMN buddy, featuring a slightly light grey premium body and the FRGMT logo in black instead of white. You can own only one of these gun buddies per Riot ID. You can’t return or get a refund for this item.

Battlefield 6 Season 1 to bring new maps, modes, weapons, more

by admin October 1, 2025

The launch of Battlefield 6 is just the start. Season 1 is already being detailed as EA has revealed new maps, modes, gameplay features, and a whole lot more set to keep players engaged. Here’s the full rundown.

When Battlefield 6 hits store shelves on October 10, players will immediately have access to a surprisingly deep campaign, a litany of multiplayer maps, and down the line, a Battle Royale mode too. However, that’s just the beginning, as EA has made clear.

In the live-service era, games with a multiplayer slant are typically supported for months and even years after launch. That’s no different here with the next mainline entry in the juggernaut FPS franchise.

Battlefield 6 Season 1 has already been unveiled in full as EA looks to hook players for the long run. From the start date to all the new content on the way, here’s what you need to know.

Battlefield 6 Season 1 start date

Battlefield 6 Season 1 kicks off on Tuesday, October 28. There’s currently no word on an exact start time, but we’re sure to learn plenty more in the coming ways, so stay tuned on that.

Article continues after ad

Of note, however, while that’s the start date for Season 1 as a whole, there are two other crucial dates to keep in mind. Rather than deploying all new content in one fell swoop, devs are drip-feeding bits and pieces over the course of three months.

New maps, weapons, limited-time modes, and more will all trickle out over time. Below is the full breakdown so you know what to expect:

  • October 28, 2025 – Season 1 starts with the Rogue Ops update
  • November 18, 2025 – California Resistance update
  • December 9, 2025 – Winter Offensive update

#Battlefield6 Season 1 begins Oct. 28 on all platforms. Free content rolls out across the season in three phases ⤵️

New content in Battlefield 6 Season 1

Two new maps throughout Season 1

Topping the bill are two new maps set to shake things up throughout Season 1. On October 28 comes Blackwell Fields, a vast open map set in a recommissioned American air base. It will support all types of game modes, ranging from the biggest playlists down to the bite-sized encounters.

Next up on November 18 comes Eastwood, another large-scale map designed with mostly all playstyles in mind. Of note, this one won’t feature jets. Once again set in the US, this map takes us to the hills of Southern California.

Last but not least, presumably to get us in the holiday spirit, an existing map will be reskinned on December 9. Empire State will freeze over, presenting new “environmental threats”, as the official blog teased.

Six new weapons in Season 1

From new assault rifles to sidearms, there’s plenty of extra firepower coming your way as Season 1 rolls on. Six distinct weapons in total are on the docket, and they are as follows:

  • October 28 – Rogue Ops update
    • SOR-300SC – Carbine
    • GGH-22 – Sidearm
    • Mini Scout – Sniper Rifle
  • November 18 – California Resistance update
    • DB-12 – Shotgun
    • M357 Trait – Sidearm
  • December 9 – Winter Offensive update
    • Ice Climbing Axe – Melee Weapon

Three new modes in Season 1

Players will be able to equip and level up their gear in a series of new game modes arriving throughout Season 1 as well.

On October 28 comes Strikepoint, a much smaller Battlefield mode designed for 4v4, round-based gameplay. It sounds incredibly similar to Call of Duty’s popular Search and Destroy game type.

Next up on November 18, we have Sabotage joining the rotation. A mode built for 8v8 combat, this one is all about pushing the pace. Teams take turns on offense and defense, with a simple goal: Destroy more objectives than your opposition.

Last but not least comes a limited-time mode on December 9 known as Ice Lock. Here, gameplay hinges around a Freeze mechanic that will seemingly have enemies locked in place for a brief period, perhaps even vehicles too, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

‘Outstanding’ Tarik Skubal leads Tigers past Guardians in G1

CLEVELAND — When it comes to winning in the MLB postseason, circa 2025, you hear a lot about high-octane bullpens and home run hitters. But when you have a throwback ace like Tarik Skubal on your side, starting pitching and a little small-ball can still get it done.

Skubal lifted the Detroit Tigers to 1-0 lead in their AL wild-card series against the Cleveland Guardians with perhaps the most dominant outing of a career that’s been full of them, tying a 53-year-old Detroit postseason record with 14 strikeouts and pitching into the eighth inning of a terse 2-1 win.

Joe Coleman set the Tigers’ postseason strikeout mark in the 1972 ALCS against Oakland.

“It doesn’t really matter,” Skubal said. “Winning is what matters to me. It’s mattered to me all year. I think winning is the most important thing in sports.”

The outing became more dominant the deeper Skubal worked into the game. According to ESPN Research, Skubal topped 100 miles per hour with a pitch 11 times, six more than he’s ever had in a start. He topped 100 five times alone in the seventh when he struck out the side, the last whiff coming on a game-high 101.2 miles-per-hour laser to get Brayan Rocchio.

If it looked like Skubal was emptying his tank, it’s because he was: Based on his usage during the season, Skubal figured that would be his last frame. But Detroit manager A.J. Hinch wanted three more batters from the AL’s reigning Cy Young winner — and the favorite to win it again.

“I thought my outing was coming to a close,” Skubal said. “But I was ready to go back out there. Never going to take myself out of a game.”

Among the 28 batters Skubal faced, only three managed to get the ball out of the infield. None of those three came in the fourth inning when Cleveland managed to scratch out a run against the blazing lefty. That tally came on two infield hits sandwiched around a walk, the second of those safeties a chopper off the plate that scored hustling Angel Martinez all the way from second.

Cleveland starter Gavin Williams struck out eight over his six-plus innings, and both runs he allowed were unearned, two errors you can’t make against an ace like Skubal when he’s on. These tight games are part-and-parcel of the Tigers-Guardians rivalry.

“What an unbelievably pitched game we got to watch,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “Tarik Skubal was outstanding, punched out 14. Couldn’t get anything off of him. Gavin similarly.”

Game 1, played under a cloudless sky on an unusually warm early autumn day in downtown Cleveland, was something straight out of 1976. Both starters worked deep into the game. All three runs came via the small-ball route, and no ball left the yard.

The Tigers scored the go-ahead run in the seventh on a perfectly executed safety squeeze bunt by Zack McKinstry that plated Riley Green. Detroit — which laid down just five sacrifice bunts during the regular season — had two of them in Game 1.

“Anyone new to the Tigers-Guardians, this is what they look like,” Hinch said. “Like, every game. And obviously, Tarik set an incredible tone for us.”

It was indeed a throwback game dominated by a throwback starting pitcher in Skubal, who would look like an ace in any era of the big leagues.

“He’s a beast,” Hinch said. “And it’s why he’s considered by many as the best pitcher in the big leagues.”

The Guardians will try to keep their season alive in Wednesday’s Game 2, when Detroit’s Casey Mize will face Cleveland’s Tanner Bibee. The winner of the series will advance to the ALDS to face the Seattle Mariners.

Cleveland, which overcame a 15-1/2 game deficit to overcome Detroit in the AL Central race, has, in a sense, been playing elimination-type games for some time.

“Our backs have been against the wall for three months,” Vogt said. “What’s one more day?”

Social justice advocacy groups slam Roblox for “silencing important voices” with new parental controls

by admin October 1, 2025

Out Making Games (OMG), Women in Games (WIG), and BAME in Games (BiG) have co-written an open letter to Roblox calling on the company to reconsider the recent changes it has made concerning “sensitive issues,” claiming the changes are a “step backward for both creative expression and social justice.”

Roblox notified game makers in August that it was introducing a new “content descriptor and parental control [for] experiences that are primarily themed on a sensitive social, political, or religious issue,” including any experiences that provoke a “strong emotional response” or suggest “polarized viewpoints.”

While Roblox insisted the changes were made to “give parents of children under 13 the choice of how and when their children engage with these issues,” OMG, WIG, and BiG claim “these changes threaten to undermine the vibrant, inclusive creative community that has flourished on the platform since 2006, while potentially causing real harm to marginalised groups in society.”

This is because, the organizations claim, Roblox’s guidelines “specifically cite ‘issues such as immigration, capital punishment, gun control, marriage equality, pay equity in sports, prayer in schools, racial profiling, affirmative action, vaccination policies, and reproductive rights’ as examples requiring these descriptors.” Further, the joint letter states that by Roblox’s insistence that it is “not taking a stance,” “the effect is the opposite,” writing: “By categorising equality and human rights as ‘sensitive,’ the platform treats them as debatable rather than fundamental.”

“We support efforts to keep children safe online – especially girls, who face disproportionate harassment and grooming. But safety cannot be achieved by silencing content that educates and empowers,” the letter states. “Issues such as equal pay, reproductive rights, and gender equality are central to girls’ and women’s lived experiences. Marking these as ‘sensitive’ risks hiding content that is vital to representation, education, and inspiration.

“When these conversations are suppressed, the result is not safety but silence. It discourages young women from participating fully, reinforces harmful stereotypes, and weakens the pipeline of future creators and leaders […] This false neutrality downplays systemic racism by equating discrimination with the policies meant to remedy it, potentially emboldening those who deny or dismiss racial inequality.”

Consequently, OMG, WIG, BiG claim that parental controls should not “come at the expense of fundamental human dignity,” and is therefore calling on Roblox “to reconsider these guidelines and find ways to protect young users without legitimizing discrimination or silencing important voices.”

“[Roblox] has built something remarkable over nearly two decades,” the statement concludes. “It would be tragic to see that legacy undermined by policies that, intentionally or not, perpetuate the very inequalities that creative expression has the power to challenge and change.”

GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Roblox for comment.

How to download and play League of Legends on Mac

by admin October 1, 2025

As one of the biggest MOBA titles in both casual and esports, League of Legends is definitely worth downloading on your PC—but what if your rig runs on macOS? This guide is all about how to install and play LoL on Mac, so you can focus on gaming and leave the worries to us.

League of Legends is a PC-exclusive game that can run smoothly on almost every machine in 2025, thanks to Riot’s focus on optimizing performance. But not all games run on Mac, so you might wonder if LoL is playable on an Apple device—and if so, how to install it.

Can you play League of Legends on Mac

Unlike many popular PC games that are Windows-exclusive, League of Legends offers an official Mac client. But this wasn’t always the case.

Just one download button away. Image via Riot Games

At launch in 2009, LoL was only available on Windows, so players had to bank on workarounds to make it work unofficially. Considering the growing popularity, however, Riot released a Mac version of the game in 2013. So, as of 2025, you just need to download the official Mac installer to play LoL on your Apple device.

After a recent update, some players on Mac have been receiving warning messages about the game moving to Metal graphics from OpenGL and that their devices don’t support Metal. Unless you own an old Mac that doesn’t meet the minimum requirements for LoL, you don’t have to worry about this message.

According to reports, the warning message is wrongly showing up for some players with supported Mac devices due to an internal issue, so just make sure of the system requirements and you should be good.

Mac system requirements for League of Legends

Here are the minimum system requirements to play LoL on a Mac device in 2025:

It’s worth noting that as mentioned on the League of Legends website, the game does not currently support MacOS 12 and 13. Additionally, if you’re having trouble playing the game with MacOS 10.15, the only fix at this point in time is to revert your OS to 10.14.

Ever since Riot released the dedicated version, installing League of Legends on Mac has been a piece of cake. Just follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official League of Legends website.
  2. Click on the Download Mac installer button.
  3. Run the installer. Log into your Riot account when prompted. If you don’t have an account, make one.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions and the game should be ready for you to play in no time.

That’s it. You should be able to jump into the action once the installation is complete.

Real lawyer claims Caseoh would get 3,000 years in jail for Goob Lagoon waterpark ‘crimes’

by admin September 30, 2025

Real-life lawyer and content creator ‘LawByMike’ launched an ‘investigation’ into Caseoh’s fictional Goob Lagoon waterpark, finding it liable for hundreds of millions of dollars.

No, Twitch streamer Caseoh doesn’t actually own a waterpark in real life. However, his ‘Goob Lagoon’ waterpark in the game Waterpark Simulator has gone so viral that it’s no surprise some folks might think it’s a real place.

Caseoh’s streams playing the game have taken over social media, prompting fans to literally buy billboards and even rent out space on the sides of trucks advertising the nonexistent park.

Article continues after ad

Specifically, the amount of ‘injuries’ and ‘deaths’ from guests at Goob Lagoon have become an inside joke within the fanbase that has now expanded to the real world, even resulting in fans making an official-looking website to help ‘injured guests’ seek compensation.

Although Caseoh’s adventures at Goob Lagoon are now over, the streams grew so popular that an actual lawyer looked into the fictional waterpark to see exactly how deep in legal trouble it would be, if it were an actual business.

Lawyer says Caseoh would owe $400M for ‘crimes’ at Goob Lagoon

‘LawByMike’ is an experienced attorney based out of Los Angeles, California. He has practiced law in a variety of areas, such as personal injury, criminal defense, entertainment, and more.

On top of having his own practice, he also creates videos on YouTube, where he delves into the legal side of popular creators’ lives and breaks down the legal system for his 15 million subscribers.

In a September 30 upload, LawByMike looked into Caseoh’s Goob Lagoon, where he analyzed the many incidents of ‘injury’ caused to guests by dangerous water slides, slipping on puddles, and even getting walloped by Caseoh himself for spraying graffiti in the park.

Article continues after ad

Mike also pointed out violations of health codes and OSHA regulations, such as when Caseoh discovered trash bags and human waste inside the Goob Lagoon swimming pools. According to LawByMike, each violation is considered a separate incident, racking up thousands of dollars and lots of jail time.

Article continues after ad

Of course, he couldn’t just skip over the moment when Caseoh tased someone swimming in a pool, electrocuting and killing everyone inside it.

“Now we’re looking at mass murder,” Mike said. “We’ve got three counts of murder here. Caseoh’s going away for life. Depending on where he lives, the death penalty could happen here.”

Article continues after ad

He did, however, note that Caseoh could argue he didn’t know what would happen if he used the taser in the pool — but found that defense “weak” and unlikely to sway a judge.

Using Caseoh’s daily park reports, Mike found that there were around 22 estimated deaths at the Goob Lagoon, along with numerous health code violations, OSHA violations, and employment lawsuits, resulting in a hypothetical fine of $399 million.

Combined with other lawsuits from employees and fines from code violations, he estimated the number to be closer to $400M — and that’s not including the jail time Caseoh would have to face.

Article continues after ad

Article continues after ad

For the ‘crimes’ of criminal negligence, battery, battery with a deadly weapon, involuntary manslaughter, and second-degree murder, Mike hypothesized Caseoh would spend around 3,000 years in jail.

“This is the scariest waterpark I’ve ever seen,” Mike remarked. “…Caseoh, I loved reacting to you playing this game. Everyone should watch more of this series.”

Thus far, Caseoh has not reacted to his hypothetical prison sentence — but knowing his viewers, it won’t be long until the news gets to him. Unfortunately, his run at the Goob Lagoon is over… but it’s probably for the best, given all the (fake) legal trouble.

George Springer to donate Hartford Whalers batting gloves to Hockey Hall of Fame

by admin September 30, 2025

Come the end of the Toronto Blue Jays’ season, veteran outfielder George Springer’s batting gloves will have a new home — but they won’t be going far.

Editor’s Picks

Springer’s Hartford Whalers-themed batting gloves will be going to the hall of fame — not the Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown, New York, but the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The 36-year-old outfielder’s gloves pay homage to his since-departed childhood team. Springer is a native of New Britain, Connecticut, located approximately 20 minutes southwest of the state’s capital of Hartford. Born in 1989, Springer was a child during the final years of the Whalers in Connecticut, with the franchise playing its last game in Hartford in 1997 before relocating and rebranding to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Evidently impressed by the tribute, the Hockey Hall of Fame requested Springer’s gloves once the season comes to a close.

Springer is entering the postseason on the back of a resurgent 2025 campaign. He finished the regular season with 32 home runs, 84 RBIs and a .560 slugging percentage, all personal bests since his run of three straight All-Star Games from 2017-19. With his help, the Toronto Blue Jays won the AL East for the first time since 2015.

The Blue Jays will play their first game of the 2025 playoffs on Oct. 4, against the winner of the New York Yankees/Boston Red Sox wild-card series.

The games industry reacts to the shock buyout of EA

by admin September 30, 2025

The announcement of a leveraged buyout of Electronic Arts by a private-equity consortium has sent shockwaves through the games industry over the past few days.

The consortium includes Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) – which is linked to the country’s crown prince Mohammed bin Salman – along with Silver Lake (which previously invested $400 million in Unity) and the independent investment firm Affinity Partners, headed by US president Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

But perhaps the buyout shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Trip Hawkins – who founded EA in 1982, but left in the 1990s – warned that the company would be snapped up sooner or later back in 2022. “As with Activision, EA will get the proverbial offer that they cannot refuse,” he said at the time – and so it has proved.

Peter Lewin, a video game lawyer at the UK law firm Wiggin, adds that all the recent signs pointed towards a buyout. “Rumours have swirled about a potential EA sale for a while, with previous potential suitors reportedly including the likes of Disney, Apple, and Amazon, so a sale is unsurprising,” he says.

“The successful consortium including the Saudi’s Public Investment Fund [PIF] is also not a shock, given they already owned roughly 10% of the company and had very publicly earmarked several billion for a large publisher acquisition years prior.”

“I do worry about many things with this deal”

Hendrik Lesser, Remote Control Productions

Hendrik Lesser – founder of the Munich-based Remote Control Productions and president of the European Games Developer Federation – agrees that it’s “not a secret” that EA had been looking at all kinds of sale options for years. But he’s concerned about what the buyout will mean for the company.

“I have played EA games since I was a kid, worked with them in various roles (policy to project) and wish them the best,” he says. “But I do worry about many things with this deal. How will creative control work, especially over time? I doubt that with the PIF and Kushner, this is just a financial investment.

“It gives the PIF (which is a state-controlled investment fund) even more capabilities in gaming, including soft power, especially with an IP like Battlefield. This should not be taken lightly in today’s times.”

Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games research at Ampere Analysis, says that for PIF, the EA purchase “fits into its strategy of accumulating soft power through entertainment and sports. This lays the foundation for the World Cup in 2034 taking place in Saudi Arabia.”

Synergies

Harding-Rolls also notes that there are “a few obvious synergies” between the parties involved in the deal, which could lead to benefits for both EA and its purchasers.

“Saudi Arabia’s PIF and Silver Lake control a cross section of companies in the games, entertainment, and sports sectors which potentially align strongly with EA’s business,” he says. “They are particularly strong in sports and esports, which sits neatly with EA as the leading sports-game company.

“PIF also owns Scopely and Niantic’s games studios through Savvy Games, a deep well of expertise in mobile gaming. EA’s mobile games business has traditionally underperformed and should be a much larger part of its overall business.

“This alignment could help transform EA’s mobile business. EA’s revenue growth in recent years has been benign, so the opportunity to drive growth and build out a long-term strategy by bringing together a cross-section of expertise is attractive to both parties. A more diversified strategy could offset some of the huge investments being made in AAA gaming and drive broader value from the same IP investments.”

Beyond this, there’s also the advantage that by going private, EA will no longer have to satisfy the demands of shareholders or worry about the optics of its finances ahead of quarterly earnings announcements. Harding-Rolls says this could potentially allow the firm to focus more on “long-term strategies and investments.”

Fiona Sperry, who previously headed up the EA-owned Criterion Games and is now the CEO of Three Fields Entertainment, agrees that going private could potentially be freeing for EA. “I can’t comment on these particular investors, but If I still worked at EA, I’d be really excited about the opportunity that going private would entail,” she says.

Sperry notes that launch dates tend to be largely immovable for publicly listed companies owing to the huge gap in earnings a delay could cause – but private companies have more leeway.

“However experienced you are, the reality of game development means that you’re often having to compromise your game to hit a date – a date you most often had to commit to long before you’ve finalised the design,” she says. “You have to design to the date rather than the other way round. And it’s really hard to do that when you’re trying to innovate.

“EA has amazing creative teams and hopefully this will give them the chance to really utilise that creativity and take some risks. Don’t get me wrong – dates are important for focussing everyone – but sometimes (as we have found with our game Wreckreation) you just need more time.”

Debt

One potential downside of the buyout, however, is the huge amount of debt involved. The total deal is worth $55 billion, but a whopping $20 billion of that total is being borrowed by the consortium – and hence will have to be paid back over time.

“Many are rightly noting the heavily leveraged nature of this sale,” says Lewin, “and how servicing $20 billion of debt may lead the business to more predictable, low-risk future investments. This may ultimately be a good thing for EA’s core franchises like Battlefield, EA Sports FC, The Sims, and Madden – we’ll see more of those.

“Big swings into revitalising EA’s treasure-trove of other IPs like Burnout, SSX, Mirror’s Edge, and Titanfall though, or enhanced investment into its excellent EA Originals programme, seem unlikely.”

However, Lewin offers a glimmer of hope by suggesting that these “less-exploited IPs” could end up being put on the market by EA’s new owners.

“We’ll likely see a greater emphasis on transmedia and licensing,” Lewin adds, “in order to create additional revenue streams around their core franchises, with limited financial exposure on EA’s side.”

Industry veteran Richard Browne – who currently heads the consultancy firm Blue Moon, but was previously head of external publishing for Digital Extremes, and began his career at pre-PlayStation Eidos – says that the EA buyout comes with a “great deal of concerns” in the short term.

“Assuming that level of debt usually requires the company to focus primarily on profit and paying it down as quickly as possible,” he says, “which could focus EA on squeezing consumers harder on elements such as microtransactions and subscriptions. It might also drive them to push all franchises onto a yearly cycle, putting pressure and crunch on development teams and lessening the ability for innovation.”

Like Lewin, he worries that the buyout could stymie the “more creative elements of EA,” where “profit margins haven’t been the goal.”

“On the flip side,” he adds, “having been part of companies like THQ, where quarterly performance really contributed to its death spiral, EA has the opportunity to invest in long-term growth and investment away from the prying eyes of Wall Street. As an industry, we’ll hope that’s the case.”

“There is likely to be rationalisation of workforce and capital expenditure”

Piers Harding-Rolls, Ampere Analysis

Still, he’s concerned about talent drain at the firm. He notes that the deal will “make a lot of people in EA very happy” if they have stock options in the company – but without that ability to offer stock options in the future, “how does EA retain its best and brightest?” he asks.

Going back to the short term, the biggest implication of the deal is the high risk of job losses.

“There is likely to be rationalisation of workforce and capital expenditure as a result of the buyout,” warns Harding-Rolls. Servicing that huge $20 billion in debt will require “cutting costs and building more margin from existing businesses to generate more free cash flow,” he says.

“There might also be some talent migration due to cultural differences. However, I don’t expect any significant changes to the upcoming slate of games over the next couple of years. The biggest opportunities remain growth of the Battlefield franchise, growth of the EA Sports FC franchise during the World Cup 2026, and bigger exposure to mobile gaming.”

Industry implications

It’s worth noting at this point that the buyout isn’t yet a done thing. “The size of the deal will likely require regulatory approvals,” notes Lewin. “However, given this deal doesn’t involve the acquisition of one gaming behemoth by another, there shouldn’t be any anti-competition concerns as we saw with Microsoft and Activision Blizzard.”

But assuming it does go through (EA said in a press release that it hopes to close the transaction in Q1 2027), it could be one of many mergers and acquisitions we see in the next few years.

Harding-Rolls suggests that as the games industry continues in a slow growth market against a backdrop of increasing costs, companies will seek to consolidate as a way to “build market share, drive growth, and drive more value from content investments.”

Another consequence is that the industry’s centre of gravity is shifting more towards the Middle East. “Saudi Arabia is determined to become a huge player in the global games market and challenge the biggest players from the US, China, and Japan,” says Harding-Rolls. “This has changed the deal landscape for the global industry and is shining a light on the Middle East and how the industry is being built in the region.”

The sheer scale of the deal could also be viewed as a positive, thinks Lesser, who says it “sends a message to the games industry that serious players believe in their future.”

Still, the full consequences of the buyout are obscure, and it’s difficult to predict at this point whether the positives will outweigh the negatives, especially for the employees within EA. Ultimately, we can only watch and see what happens next.

Circana senior director Mat Piscatella is frank in his admission that he doesn’t know quite where this trail will eventually lead. “I don’t think anyone really does, if they were being honest with themselves.”

But he does know one thing. “Leveraged buyouts have a certain history that generally hasn’t been great for the acquired companies,” he says. Whether that will be the case here remains to be seen.
