28 Days Later creator set to write & direct Elden Ring movie

After weeks of rumors, it’s now been confirmed that Alex Garland will tackle an Elden Ring adaptation, bringing From Software’s most popular game to the big screen.

While earlier FromSoft titles like Dark Souls and Bloodborne certainly did well, Elden Ring was a smash hit beyond compare. It quickly became one of the best-selling games ever, with millions of players venturing through the Lands Between.

It’s proven so popular, in fact, we’re now getting a feature film out of it. Having always been onboard with the idea of an adaptation, the Japanese game devs have now given the green light for A24 to turn Elden Ring into a movie.

Not only that, but acclaimed writer and director Alex Garland is attached. While known best for the likes of 28 Days Later, Ex Machina, and most recently, Civil War and Warfare, Garland has long been a vocal supporter of the gaming industry. Now, he’s set to adapt one of the biggest games in recent history.

Elden Ring movie officially moving ahead

After rumors began to circulate earlier in the year, A24 confirmed its plans to make an Elden Ring movie on May 22, 2025. Garland is set to both write and direct the live-action film, translating the source material originally created by FromSoft, with help from Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin.

Martin created the foundation for which the story of Elden Ring was built upon, laying the groundwork with history of the realm, its characters, and more. Seemingly eager to do anything but finish his series of novels, Martin himself is also attached in a producing role for the Elden Ring film.

Given it’s still early days, there’s no quite telling just how the live-action film may look. Elden Ring, much like all other Soulslikes, features otherworldly monsters and larger-than-life bosses while leaving much of its lore to loose descriptions for players to piece together.

There’s also no telling if it will be a direct adaptation of the game’s storyline, or whether Garland will pen a new story in the mega-popular universe. Only time will tell and we’ll be sure to keep you posted as further details emerge.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley, the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year this season, headlined the league’s All-Defensive Team, which was announced Thursday.

Mobley, who also was an All-Defensive first-team selection for the 2022-23 season, was joined on the first team by Atlanta guard Dyson Daniels, Oklahoma City guard Luguentz Dort, Golden State forward Draymond Green and Houston guard Amen Thompson.

Mobley, 23, averaged 1.6 blocks for the 64-win Cavaliers and has established himself as one of the most versatile big men in the league through his first four seasons. He received 99 of 100 first-team votes, and he and Daniels were the only players to be named to all 100 ballots.

Green, the only other former Defensive Player of the Year (2017) selected to the first team this season, is now a five-time first-team selection after averaging 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks for the Warriors this season. He had 91 first-team votes.

Green’s nine total All-Defensive Team selections are tied for the seventh most in NBA history, along with Hall of Famers Dennis Johnson, Michael Jordan, Jason Kidd, Hakeem Olajuwon, Gary Payton and fellow future Hall of Famer Chris Paul.

Daniels, Dort and Thompson were first-time All-Defense selections.

Daniels led the NBA this season with an average of 3 steals per game in his first year with the Hawks, and his 229 steals were the most by any player in the NBA since Payton had 231 of them in 1996.

Dort, one of the best on-ball defenders in the NBA on the perimeter, averaged 1.1 steals per game for the 68-win Thunder.

Thompson, meanwhile, averaged 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks for Houston, as the second-year swingman immediately has become one of the best perimeter defenders in the league.

The second team featured Portland forward Toumani Camara, Minnesota center Rudy Gobert, Memphis forward Jaren Jackson Jr., Oklahoma City guard Jalen Williams and LA Clippers center Ivica Zubac.

Gobert, last year’s Defensive Player of the Year and a four-time winner of that award, earned his eighth All-Defensive selection of his career. This was his first second-team nod, while Jackson — the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year — has now made three All-Defensive teams.

Camara, Williams and Zubac, meanwhile, are first-time all-defense selections.

The All-Defensive Teams are the penultimate award of this year’s end-of-season awards schedule to be handed out this year. The All-NBA teams will be announced Friday night.

Peter Molyneux recalls how Project Milo, the Kinect game with revolutionary promise, died a death

Vapourware can end up being the stuff of legend, like Rockstar’s Agent, Star Wars 1313, or StarCraft: Ghost. Without ever seeing the light of day, these games never risked the possibility of being played and forgotten, and instead live on forever as the subjects of lengthy YouTube essays.

Peter Molyneux, formerly of the studios Bullfrog and Lionhead, and currently working on Masters of Albion at 22cans, has had a number of cancelled projects in his career. The original Xbox’s prehistoric game BC was axed around the time Fable became Lionhead’s priority, for example.

Still, Molyneux’s most notable lost game (or tech demo, depending on who you asked at the time) was arguably Project Milo.

Revealed alongside the Kinect device at E3 2009, which was then known as Project Natal, players would interact with a young male character called Milo using voice and gesture commands.

This unusual premise made the game a huge talking point. The project was revealed just as traditional game genre boundaries were starting to blur following the success of the Nintendo DS and Wii.

The actual game based on the tech demo was to be called Milo & Kate, with Molyneux demoing it in more detail at a TED presentation in 2010. Lionhead’s stylistic touches are obvious throughout the demo, like its tone, music, narration, and choice of story about a British family that’s recently moved to America.

Molyneux described the game at the time by saying, “most of it is just a trick; but it’s a trick that works”.

The game ultimately didn’t release, with some of its ideas rolled into Fable: The Journey on Xbox 360, which was not well-received. Still, the demo arguably did its job, putting Microsoft’s Kinect device at the centre of the cultural conversation for its reveal, a full 17 months before it was commercially available.

Fable: The Journey ended up being the final Lionhead game before the studio’s closure in 2016.

While the broad details (and many specifics, per a 2013 Polygon piece) of Project Milo’s demise are fairly well-known, it was undeniably exciting to hear Molyneux himself recall the project during Nordic Game 2025 in Malmö this week.

During the Q&A section of his fireside chat, one attendee asked about Milo, saying they believed that to this day, Molyneux had a vision for what it could’ve been.

“I’ll tell you exactly what happened,” Molyneux said. “Microsoft had [bought] us, we were owned by Microsoft, and they had…I’m going to say this, I might get in trouble…what I thought was a bit of a crazy idea. And that was to do gesture recognition as an input device, rather than a controller. They showed me this stuff, and Microsoft had this amazing research building. Incredible.

“It was run by this brilliant bloke called Alex Kipman. Makes me look boring and passionless – he had ten times more passion than I had. He had this demo of this device, and when he showed me this demo, it could see people’s faces. He said, ‘it can do voice recognition’, and it had a massive field-of-view so it could see this whole room.”

Molyneux then recalled his first reaction to the tech that would eventually become Kinect.

“He said, ‘what do you think?’, and I said, ‘well, firstly’ – when he did the demo, he was jumping all over the room – ‘I’m a gamer, I don’t want to play games standing up. That’s the first thing. It doesn’t appeal to me, I want to sit back, I want to smoke what I smoke, and I want to drink what I want to drink, and I don’t want to prance around like a twat’.

“The death blow of Milo, which still breaks my heart to this day, was that it was decided that Kinect shouldn’t be a gaming device: it should be a party device”

“I said, ‘I’ll go away and I’ll create a demo of [how we should use] the technology you showed me.’

“Again, I go back to what I want the player to feel,” Molyneux continued. “Now, at that time, my son, Lucas, was about seven years old. And, anyone who’s a parent will probably experience this: there was this moment where you realise you’re crafting, inspiring, a human being. Wouldn’t it be an incredible thing to create a game around that feeling?”

Molyneux’s phone then started ringing during the panel, and he paused to turn it off before continuing.

“Wouldn’t it be incredible to create an experience around that? About inspiring, in Milo’s case, a boy. That was contentious in itself, because of course, lots of people go to the dark side with that [idea].

Molyneux then said staff at Lionhead started working on the demo, collaborating with an unnamed technology company on Project Milo’s voice recognition.

“We had all sorts of experiences, like you could hand things to Milo in the game world and he would take them. They really worked well.”

Molyneux then said the team “cheated in a big way about how you could talk to Milo”, recalling that his intention was to have players sit back on the sofa and “just experience things with this game character”.

“Even though voice recognition now is almost a solved problem, back in those days we solved the problem by cheating,” Molyneux said.

“So, when Milo asked you the player a question, we had set that question up to different points, so he knew what sort of answer he’d give.”

At this point, Molyneux explained how the changing specs of the Kinect device in the run up to launch impacted the potential of Project Milo.

“Unfortunately, as we were developing Milo, so the Kinect device was being developed. And they realised that the device that Alex Kipman first showed off would cost $5,000 for consumers to buy.

“So they cost-reduced that device down to such a point, where the field-of-view…I think it was a minuscule field-of-view. In other words, it could only just see what’s straight in front of you.”

Ultimately, the demise of Project Milo came down to Microsoft’s changing priorities with the Kinect device, which was soon synonymous with the kinds of casual games that exploded in popularity on the Wii.

“Then, the death blow of Milo, which still breaks my heart to this day, was that it was decided that Kinect shouldn’t be a gaming device: it should be a party device. You should play a sports game with it, or dancing games with it. So, it just didn’t fit into the Microsoft portfolio, and unfortunately the project was cancelled.”

“No one ever saw the complete experience,” Molyneux continued. “We didn’t finish the experience. But it was a magical thing. What was so magical about it: it wasn’t about heroes and aliens coming down, there wasn’t this ‘end of the world’ narrative scenario.”

“It was just experiencing what it’s like to hang out with someone that loves you.”

Activision has confirmed that one of the new weapons available with the launch of season four is the LC10 SMG. However, the weapon won’t be available for you from the get-go, and you will have to spend some time unlocking tiers and pages on the battle pass until you reach the SMG. The LC10 is available on the third page of the battle pass, requiring you to play and earn XP to level up tiers and pages.

The LC10 features all the possible attachment slots, allowing you to further enhance the weapon’s performance. Additionally, there is also a weapon blueprint for the LC10 that you can unlock from the fourteenth page of the battle pass. However, that will take a lot of time and might even cost you additional CoD points.

The upcoming season is expected to follow the course of its predecessors and stretch over a period of eight weeks, giving you plenty of time to grind for XP and unlock all the possible rewards.

Scalpers waste McDonald’s orders to collect anime Happy Meal toys

McDonald’s scalpers in Japan are wasting tons of orders just to collect Happy Meal toys, which are selling for big bucks on eBay.

McDonald’s Japan doesn’t just have a new ‘Grand’ size fries and drinks available. The chain also has Happy Meals based on the manga series turned anime ‘Chiikawa.’

In just two days, as per People, the Chiikawa toys were completely sold out throughout the region as customers flocked to collect the Happy Meal items. The meals contained goodies such as cups, eraser heads and other nods to the collab.

However, in order to get their hands on the Happy Meal toys, customers have been forgoing the food and creating a slew of waste in the process.

Happy Meals in Japan, referred to as ‘Happy Sets,’ contain either chicken nuggets, a hamburger or pancakes along with a side of fries, salad or edamame and corn and a drink.

In a video posted on X, bags upon bags of Happy Meal orders were left on the counters of McDonald’s for staff to clean up after scalpers had taken their toys and left.

Resellers are also trying to make a huge profit on eBay, with some listings for the Happy Meal toys being over $80.

McDonald’s says they hadn’t anticipated the demand for the toys and that sales had “far exceeded expectations.” Additionally, the chain apologized for “not meeting the expectations of customers.”

A second release of the Chiikawa items is slated for May 23.

Customers going wild over McDonald’s toys isn’t a new phenomenon. In January 2025, a run of Pokemon promo cards were released and resold at prices from $600 to $800 USD.

College Football Playoff seeding changes – How 2024 would have played out

After months of meeting to discuss things to discuss at future meetings, the people in charge of the College Football Playoff actually made a decision on Thursday, and it was one we’ve assumed they’d make for a while. After last year’s 12-team CFP gave byes to the four most highly ranked conference champions, this year’s will not.

Conference commissioners voted to go to a straight seeding format (with five spots still reserved for conference champions) in 2025.

There are still plenty of things to discuss regarding what the CFP will look like in 2026 and beyond — and good lord, don’t even get me started on how much I don’t like where we’re probably headed in that regard — but with the 2025 season starting in less than 100 days, we at least know how things will take shape this fall. Here are a few thoughts regarding these changes.

A 2024 simulation

To see what something might look like in the future, my first step is always to revisit the past. Last year’s 12-teamer, the first-ever genuine tournament at the highest level of college football, indeed handed out byes to conference champions and gave us the weird visual of having two different numbers listed next to the teams in the bracket.

Boise State, for instance, was ranked ninth in the overall CFP rankings, but the Broncos got the No. 3 seed as the third-ranked conference champ. Arizona State was simultaneously 12th and fourth. Granted, the NFL does something similar, giving the top three seeds in each conference to the winners of each individual division (which occasionally gives us odd pairings such as 9-8 Tampa Bay hosting 11-6 Philadelphia in 2023 or the 10-7 Los Angeles Rams hosting 14-3 Minnesota in 2024). But from the start, it was clear there was some dissatisfaction with this approach. And when both BSU and ASU lost in the quarterfinals — all four conference champions did, actually — it became abundantly clear that this was going to change. It just took about five months to actually happen.

Regardless, let’s look at how the 2024 playoff would have taken shape with straight seeding instead of conference-champ byes.

First round

12 Clemson at 5 Notre Dame (SP+ projection: Irish by 13.1, 79.4% win probability)
11 Arizona State at 6 Ohio State (OSU by 24.2*, 93.6% win probability)
10 SMU at 7 Tennessee (Tennessee by 7.0, 66.9% win probability)
9 Boise State at 8 Indiana (Indiana by 12.5, 78.3% win probability)

(* Here’s your reminder that SP+ really didn’t trust Arizona State much last season, primarily because the Sun Devils were a pretty average team early in the season. At 5-2 with a number of close wins and a sketchy-looking loss at Cincinnati without injured quarterback Sam Leavitt, they entered November ranked in the 50s. While they certainly rose during their late-year hot streak, they finished the year only 35th. They were genuinely excellent late in the season — just ask Texas — but they were 6-1 in one-score games heading into the CFP, and they were lucky to reach November with the Big 12 title still within reach.)

In last year’s actual first round, the four home teams (Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and Texas) were projected as favorites by an average of 7.2 points per SP+. The average spread was Home Team -8.9. The results were actually much more lopsided than that, and that probably wouldn’t be any different with the matchups above — here, home teams are projected favorites by an average of 14.2. Changing to straight seeding wouldn’t have made the first round more competitive.

Assuming all four home teams win in this simulation, that gives us the following quarterfinals.

Quarterfinals

Rose Bowl: 1 Oregon vs. 8 Indiana (SP+ projection: Oregon by 5.9, 64.4% win probability)
Fiesta Bowl: 4 Penn State vs. 5 Notre Dame (PSU by 0.7, 51.8% win probability)
Sugar Bowl: 3 Texas vs. 6 Ohio State (OSU by 7.1, 67.1% win probability)
Peach Bowl: 2 Georgia vs. 7 Tennessee (UGA by 2.4, 55.9% win probability)

Interestingly enough, we got two of these four matchups in real life, but they were the two semifinals — Ohio State’s 28-14 win over Texas in the Cotton Bowl and Notre Dame’s late 27-24 win over Penn State in the Orange Bowl. Now these games take place in New Orleans and Glendale, Arizona, respectively. We’ll conveniently project those results to remain the same. Meanwhile, SP+ says there’s only about a 36% chance that the other two projected favorites (Oregon and Georgia) both win, but we’ll roll with that.

Semifinals

Cotton Bowl: 1 Oregon vs. 5 Notre Dame (SP+ projection: Oregon by 2.1, 55.3% win probability)
Orange Bowl: 2 Georgia vs. 6 Ohio State (OSU by 6.8, 66.6% win probability)

With those win probabilities, there’s only about a 37% chance that both projected favorites win, and this time we’ll heed that and project an upset: Conveniently, we’ll say Notre Dame upsets Oregon, giving us the exact same Fighting Irish-Buckeyes title game we got in real life.

5 Notre Dame vs. 6 Ohio State

Again, we saw this one.

Who would have benefited from this change?

In all, using my pre-CFP SP+ projections from December, here’s a comparison of what each team’s national title odds were heading into the tournament versus what they’d have looked like with straight seeding.

Not surprisingly, Arizona State’s and Boise State’s odds would have sunk without receiving a bye, but their title odds were minimal regardless. The teams that actually ended up hurt the most by the change would have been 2-seed Georgia, original 5-seed Texas and original 11-seed SMU. The main reason for the downshift in odds? They’d have all been placed on Ohio State’s side of the bracket. Meanwhile, Ohio State’s and Tennessee’s odds would have benefited from the simple fact that they would no longer be paired with unbeaten No. 1 Oregon in the Rose Bowl quarterfinal. Obviously Ohio State handled that challenge with aplomb, but the Buckeyes still had to ace that test, then win two more games to take the title.

Beyond Ohio State and Tennessee, both Indiana and Oregon would have seen their title odds improve a bit with straight seeding, though for different reasons. Indiana would have gotten a first-round home game instead of having to travel to South Bend, while Oregon would have avoided Ohio State until a potential finals matchup.

Takeaways

Good: The No. 5 seed isn’t quite as uniquely valuable now

We never got to see the 12-team playoff as originally envisioned, with six conference champions earning bids from a universe that featured five power conferences. Instead, between the announced adoption of the 12-team playoff and its actual arrival, the SEC officially added Oklahoma and Texas to its roster while the Big Ten, with help from the Big 12, cannibalized the Pac-12. With only four power conferences remaining, we ended up with only five conference champions guaranteed entry, and with the distribution of power getting further consolidated (we still have four power conferences, but it’s clearly a Power Two and Other Two), that left us with an awkward bracket.

For starters, the new power distribution meant that the No. 5 seed — almost certainly the higher-ranked team between the losers of the Big Ten and SEC championship games — would get an almost unfair advantage. As I wrote back in December, “the odds are pretty good that the teams earning the No. 4 and 12 seeds (aka the two lowest-ranked conference champs) will be the weakest teams in the field …. Texas, the top-ranked non-champion and 5-seed, is indeed pitted against what SP+ thinks are the No. 17 and No. 30 teams in the country and therefore has excellent odds of reaching the semifinals.”

As you see above, Texas actually entered the CFP with better title odds (17.2%) than Georgia (16.6%), a higher-ranked team in SP+ and the team that had just defeated the Longhorns in the SEC title game. In theory, giving a team a bye and asking them to win three games instead of four would be a massive advantage. But in practice Texas’ odds of winning two games (against Clemson and ASU) were better than Georgia’s odds of winning one (Notre Dame). That’s not particularly fair, is it?

Bad: Conference title games mean even less now

Making this change would have indeed given the SEC champion better title odds than the SEC runner-up. That’s good, but it comes with a cost. In the re-simulation above, you’ll notice that both the winners and losers of the SEC and Big Ten title games ended up with byes and top-four seeds. That means there were almost literally no stakes — besides a quest to avoid major injuries like what afflicted Georgia — in either game.

Meanwhile, in the ACC championship, SMU lost to Clemson but barely fell in the CFP rankings (and, more specifically, still got in) because the playoff committee didn’t want to punish the Mustangs for playing a 13th game while others around them in the rankings were already done at 12. Add to that the fact that the straight-seeding approach diminished the above title odds for four of the five conference champions in the field, and it leads you toward a pretty easy question: Why are we even playing these games?

Commissioners of the power conferences have pretty clearly had that in their minds as they’ve discussed a convoluted (and, in my own opinion, patently ridiculous) new playoff structure that hands multiple automatic bids to each of the top four conferences: up to four each for the SEC and Big Ten and likely two each for the ACC and Big 12. With this structure in place, they can drift from title games and toward multiple play-in games within each conference. I absolutely hate this idea — if you want to wreck the integrity of the regular season, nothing would do that faster than a 7-5 or 8-4 Big Ten team potentially stealing a bid from a 10-2 or 11-1 comrade that was vastly superior in the regular season — but you can at least understand why the commissioners themselves, facing a world with diminished conference title games (and always looking for more TV spectacles), would try to get creative in this regard.

Straight seeding doesn’t change all that much. Ohio State was given a harder title path last year than would have existed with straight seeding, but the Buckeyes cruised regardless, winning four games by a combined 70 points. Meanwhile, even with a bye, Boise State and Arizona State weren’t likely to win three games and go all the way. The team that best peaks in December and January will win 2025’s title just like it did in 2024, we’ll enjoy ourselves all the same, and we’ll be facing another change in 2026 no matter what.

Roblox unveils new head of parental advocacy position “to support families navigating digital safety”

Roblox has appointed its first head of parental advocacy, Dr. Elizabeth Milovidov.

Based in the UK, Roblox said the new role was designed “to strengthen support for families navigating digital safety and online wellbeing” and will be “building partnerships and tools to empower parents to help their children use digital platforms safely and responsibly.”

Roblox said its “top priority has been to promote the safety and civility of its users on the platform,” and pointed to its recently introduced parental controls.

Milovidov, with a background in international law, joins Roblox from the Lego Group, where she led on digital gaming, metaverse strategy, and child safety.

“I am excited to join Roblox to address the evolving challenges families face in today’s digital landscape,” Dr. Milovidov said. “It is my personal mission to give parents the confidence and skills to raise children who thrive online while using technology safely and responsibly – today and tomorrow. This role underscores Roblox’s commitment to supporting parents with expert guidance, innovative tools, and community resources focused on child safety and family well-being.”

Tami Bhaumik, Roblox’s VP of civility and partnerships, added: “Ensuring parents have the necessary tools to navigate the digital world has always been foundational to Roblox’s Civility Initiative.

“We’re thrilled to have Elizabeth, with her digital parenting expertise, join Roblox to further help parents understand the platform and provide guidance to their children on staying safe and thriving in the online world.”

The news comes weeks after a US teenager initiated a lawsuit against Roblox and Discord, claiming the companies are “accountable for facilitating the sexual exploitation of Plaintiff, who was a minor at the time of the abuse and is now barely an adult.”

Roblox recently published its financial report for the first quarter of the fiscal year, reporting strong growth across the board, including over $1 billion in revenue.

NetEase Games has released a 13-minute Dev Vision Vol. 06 on their official X account, revealing the majority of the details for Marvel Rivals season 2.5 patch notes.

In the video, they have mentioned Ultron is the new Strategist to be added to the roster, along with a bunch of buffs and nerfs for several heroes. With the upcoming update, we will also get to see certain Team-up Abilities removed to make space for some new ones.

When does Marvel Rivals season 2.5 release?

Marvel Rivals season 2.5 will be released on May 30, 2025, on all platforms. Let’s now take a look at all the additions and changes coming with it.

Ultron (new Strategist hero)

Ultron is the new Strategist joining the game with the mid-season update. It can fly (which means you will have new ways of aerial lineups), summon drones, and use devastating energy beams to both deal damage and heal its allies.
