Microsoft “ceases and disables” some of its services to Israel Ministry of Defence

by admin September 27, 2025

Microsoft has “ceased and disabled a set of services” to part of the Israel Ministry of Defence (IMOD) following an ongoing review.

The firm’s vice chair and president Brad Smith informed employees that it reviewed a report by The Guardian that alleged a unit within the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) was “using Azure for the storage of data files and phone calls obtained through broad or mass surveillance of civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.”

Smith said Microsoft had “found evidence that supports elements of The Guardian’s reporting”, and that it includes “information relating to IMOD consumption of Azure storage capacity in the Netherlands and the use of AI services.”

“We therefore have informed the IMOD of Microsoft’s decision to cease and disable specified IMOD subscriptions and their services, including their use of specific cloud storage and AI services and technologies,” said Smith.

“We have reviewed this decision with the IMOD and the steps we are taking to ensure compliance with our terms of service, focused on ensuring our services are not used for mass surveillance of civilians.”

Smith clarified that this choice “does not impact the important work Microsoft continues to do to protect the cybersecurity of Israel and other countries in the Middle East, including under the Abraham Accords.”

Pro-Palestine group No Azure for Apartheid described Microsoft’s decision as “a significant and unprecedented win for the campaign and [its] organising.”

“Within less than a month of our sit-in in Brad Smith’s office, Microsoft has taken the significant decision to become the first US tech company to stop the sale of some technologies to the Israeli military since the start of the genocide in Gaza,” said No Azure for Apartheid organiser Hossam Nasr (via The Verge).

“The vast majority of Microsoft’s contract with the Israeli military remains intact. [This decision] only motivates us more to continue our organising until all of our demands are met, and until Palestine is free.”

Earlier this year, Microsoft announced it had conducted an internal review following an investigation by the Associated Press.

Reporting claimed that the firm’s commercial AI products were being used by the IMOD “to target civilians or cause harm in the conflict in Gaza.”

The tech giant acknowledged that it provided the IMOD “with software, professional services, Azure and Cloud AI services” but concluded there was “no evidence to date” that its AI technology had “been used to target or harm people” in the ongoing Gaza conflict.

Microsoft emphasised that it had a “standard commercial relationship with the IMOD” and it was “bound by Microsoft’s terms of services and conditions of use”.

This includes the prohibition of using its cloud and AI services “in any manner that inflicts harm on individuals or organisations or affects individuals in any way that is prohibited by law.”

Last month, 18 members of No Azure for Apartheid were arrested outside of Microsoft HQ in Redmond, Washington, during the second day of protests.

Members claimed that Microsoft and Redmond police retaliated against its “peaceful opposition of war crimes” with “the brutal mass arrest of 18 protestors, chemical weapons, and physical violence.”

The police department confirmed the arrests took place, and claimed protestors “resisted and became aggressive” and were arrested on charges including alleged “trespassing, malicious mischief, resisting arrest, and obstruction.”

Woman yawns so hard she breaks her own neck in “freak accident”

by admin September 27, 2025

A 36-year-old mother of two is going viral after she yawned so strongly that she ended up breaking her own neck, sending her to the hospital.

We’ve all had a big yawn or two that left us scared we might dislocate our jaw, but one woman from the United Kingdom seriously injured herself from yawning.

Hayley Black, a mother of two, said the incident happened back in 2016 nearly a decade ago — but after regaling her followers with the harrowing tale in a now-private video on TikTok in 2025, it’s once again shocking viewers across the net.

Article continues after ad

The injury took place when Hayley was caring for her then-newborn baby, Amelia, who was yawning while waiting for a feed at 5 AM. Yawns are contagious, so when baby Amelia yawned, so did her mom.

Hayley described the ensuing sensation as an “electric shock” that went through half her body, causing her to jump in surprise.

Article continues after ad

“My arm got stuck in the air and I was having these electric spark sensations,” she explained. “It was like having a seizure down half of my body. I knew instantly something was dreadfully wrong.”

Hayley was transported to a hospital by ambulance — a drive that she described as “excruciatingly painful,” with emergency service workers putting her head in “blocks” to stabilize her neck.

Kennedy News / TikTok: hayleys_editHayley was sent to the hospital, where she underwent scans that left doctors confused.

However, scans didn’t show anything wrong, leaving both Hayley and her doctors puzzled.

“I was screaming in pain all night and I had the gas and air. I was trying to hit myself in the head to try to knock myself out because I was in so much pain,” she said.

“Nobody was listening to me, and I was like, ‘Something is seriously wrong.’ The nurses were getting frustrated with me and said, ‘There’s nothing on the scans, you’re okay.’”

Woman paralyzed after breaking neck from strong yawn

Hayley’s ongoing pain prompted doctors to do more tests — and finally, a surgeon discovered that she was completely paralyzed on the right side of her body.

Article continues after ad

According to Hayley, the C6 and C7 sections of her spine at the base of her neck “shot forward” when she yawned in what medical professionals called a “freak accident.”

She underwent surgery to correct the issue. Doctors described the procedure as “risky,” telling her mother that she had a “50/50” chance of survival due to her low oxygen levels.

Kennedy News / TikTok: hayleys_editAlthough Hayley’s surgery went well, she still fears yawning to this day.

Luckily, she made it out to the other side alive and well, although she still struggles with severe nerve pain and fibromyalgia to this day.

“The one thing I have taken from it is to be grateful for the small,” she said. “Being chronically ill now because of it means I am so grateful for the good days, for the small moments, for being able to walk and for being here with my children and husband.”

This is far from the first freak accident to take social media by storm. In 2021, popular YouTuber WhistlinDiesel revealed that he survived after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a .50 caliber bullet.

Lynx's Reeve blasts refs after Collier hurt late in Game 3 loss

Lynx’s Reeve blasts refs after Collier hurt late in Game 3 loss

by admin September 27, 2025

PHOENIX — Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve blasted the officials after Minnesota’s 84-76 loss to the Phoenix Mercury in Game 3 of their series Friday, saying it was “malpractice” to have them work a WNBA playoff semifinal game.

Reeve was ejected in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter after Mercury guard Alyssa Thomas stole the ball from Lynx forward Napheesa Collier and sealed the win with a layup.

Collier was on the floor in pain after her left leg made contact with Thomas on the play, resulting in Collier coming down hard on the side of her ankle. No foul was called. Collier hobbled to the bench, and Reeve said afterward that the ankle injury was “probably a fracture,” though she did not elaborate.

The Lynx did not have an update on Collier’s status for Game 4.

“If this is what the league wants, OK, but I want to call for a change of leadership at the league level when it comes to officiating,” Reeve said after the Lynx fell behind 2-1 in the series. “The officiating crew that we had tonight, for the leadership to deem those three people semifinal-playoff worthy, it’s f—ing malpractice.”

After Thomas scored, Reeve had to be restrained as she ran onto the court to berate one of the officials. As the ref walked away, Reeve followed him and received her second technical of the game, leading to an ejection.

Lynx guard Natisha Hiedeman and two assistant coaches tried to hold back Reeve. Associate head coach Eric Thibault also got a technical for yelling at the refs.

Reeve was eventually escorted off the court but not before shouting at some fans at PHX Arena.

Collier, who sat out the final 21 seconds, finished with 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting.

The game featured 15 lead changes, and neither team led by more than eight points. But the Lynx were limited to just nine points in the fourth quarter, and the Mercury took control.

Phoenix stars Thomas, Satou Sabally and Kahleah Copper combined for 65 of the Mercury’s 84 points. The trio scored the Mercury’s last 29 points, including all 21 in the fourth.

Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve had to be restrained late in the fourth quarter of Game 3 after Mercury star Alyssa Thomas was not whistled for a foul on a play in which Napheesa Collier went down with an injury. Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images

In her postgame remarks, Reeve was incredulous after Collier did not attempt a free throw Friday.

“We were trying to play through it, trying not to make excuses. But one of the best players in the league, she had zero free throws and she had five fouls,” Reeve said. “She had her shoulder pulled out and finished the game with her leg being taken out.”

Reeve added: “I can take an L with the best of them. I don’t think we should have to play through what we did.”

Then, before walking out of the news conference without taking questions from reporters, Reeve said, “They’re f—ing awful.”

Reeve is the latest coach to speak out against the officiating this postseason. After Game 2 between the Las Vegas Aces and Indiana Fever, Aces coach Becky Hammon said that the physicality in these playoffs would not be allowed in other leagues.

When Reeve was asked about the officiating before Game 3 in Phoenix, she said the limited number of fouls being called in the Lynx-Mercury series wasn’t a positive. In Game 1 of the series, the teams combined for only 10 free throws, the fewest in a playoff game in league history.

Reeve said she didn’t want a “foul fest,” but said anything that limited freedom of movement or was an obvious infringement needed to be called.

“We’ve talked about how dangerous it can be,” Reeve said before Game 3. “And you’re hearing it from the other series. You’re hearing from other coaches. You’re hearing Becky talk about it. When you let the physicality happen, people get hurt.”

The Lynx have one day before their must-win Game 4 on Sunday.

Niki Head and Chiara Santevecchi to discuss AI at GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit 2025

by admin September 27, 2025

Niki Head, people and development director at Stellar Entertainment Software, and Chiara Santevecchi, the founder and CEO of Teem Camp, will be taking part in a panel about AI at the upcoming GamesIndustry.biz HR Summit.

In a session entitled “Culture in the age of AI”, Head and Santevecchi will examine how AI is reshaping work culture, as well as discussing approaches for introducing AI tools to employees and how these tools can be leveraged.

Head, who has worked at the Guildford-based Stellar Entertainment since 2021, says that her latest passion is “learning about the opportunities and challenges that AI and emerging technologies bring to the world of work.”

Santevecchi, meanwhile, says that her work at the team-building provider Teem Camp combines “behavioural science and AI with the fun of team play, creating experiences that go beyond ‘team building’ to deliver lasting impact on trust, communication, and well-being at work.”

Head and Santevecchi join a line-up that includes Sarah Brewster, founder of the people and culture consultancy Fresh Seed, as well as Skillfull’s Gina Jackson and Amiqus business manager Liz Prince. Sega Europe’s chief people officer Nicky Ormrod will also be joined by Simon Court and Dan Bobby of Value Partnership to talk about how they put the business back on a positive growth trajectory.

Spotify removes 75 million “spammy” songs as it cracks down on AI-generated music

by admin September 27, 2025

Spotify has announced a sweeping crackdown on AI misuse and spam uploads, confirming it has already removed more than 75 million “spammy” songs in the past year.

The platform said this move is part of a broader effort to protect artists against impersonation, fraudulent uploads, and the spread of low-quality AI-generated tracks. Spotify also outlined new rules and tools designed to safeguard artist identity and improve transparency for listeners.

The changes come as generative AI continues to reshape the music industry, raising concerns over spam, deepfake vocals, and deceptive uploads.

Spotify

Spotify’s new rules & spam filter explained

Spotify has introduced a new policy specifically addressing AI voice clones and vocal deepfakes. Unauthorized impersonation of an artist’s voice will not be permitted unless it is officially licensed. The company is also expanding its measures to stop fraudulent uploads made to appear under another artist’s profile.

Back in July, it was reported that Spotify was publishing AI-generated songs of several different musicians who had died years before.

Article continues after ad

To combat mass uploads and track manipulation, Spotify will roll out a new spam detection system this fall. The filter will identify accounts engaging in tactics such as duplicates, artificially short tracks, and other spam strategies, then prevent those tracks from being recommended.

AI disclosures in credits

Spotify is supporting a new industry standard for AI disclosures in music credits. This will allow artists and labels to indicate how AI was used in the creation of a track, from vocals to instrumentation. The disclosures will be displayed across the app as they are provided by distributors and partners.

Instagram: The Velvet Sundown

Spotify said the updates are designed to ensure artists remain in control of how AI is used in their work, while maintaining trust for listeners as the technology becomes more widely adopted.

Back in June, Spotify listeners began to discover a new band by the name of The Velvet Sundown, and many quickly accused it of being entirely AI-generated.

The band responded on social media in an attempt to deny those accusations, but they later revealed they were, in fact, AI.

Red Sox clinch first playoff berth since 2021 on walk-off

by admin September 27, 2025

Sep 26, 2025, 10:12 PM ET

BOSTON — Ceddanne Rafaela tripled off the center field wall to drive in the game-ending run in the ninth inning on Friday night, giving the Red Sox a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers and clinching Boston’s first postseason berth since 2021.

Boston rallied from a 3-0 deficit to move two games ahead of the Tigers and 2 1/2 ahead of Houston in the race for the last two American League wild-card berths, with two games left to play. Detroit, which has lost 12 of its last 14 games, can still reach the playoffs and even win the AL Central with help from Cleveland.

Boston tied the game in the eighth inning and then Romy Gonzalez singled to center with one out in the ninth. Rafaela, who missed clearing the Green Monster in the seventh by about a foot, sent a 1-0 pitch off the wall in center.

Editor’s Picks

Gonzalez, who held up to make sure it wasn’t caught, raced around to score as his teammates streamed out of the dugout and nearly beat him to the plate.

Masataka Yoshida had three hits for Boston. Closer Aroldis Chapman (5-3) pitched the ninth for the win. Tommy Kahnle (1-5) got just one out in the bottom of the ninth.

Key moment

The Red Sox missed a pair of two-run homers by about two feet: Nathaniel Lowe hit a line drive off the Green Monster in the second inning, just missing the top of the wall. Rafaela also settled for a double with his liner off the top of the 37-foot wall in the seventh.

Key stat

It was Boston’s major league-leading 12th walk-off win of the season. That’s tied for the second most in franchise history. The Red Sox won on their last at-bat 13 times in 1940.

Up next

LHP Connelly Early (1-1) will start for Boston on Saturday. The Tigers had not named a starter.

Desert Releasing March 19, 2026, gets fantastic Collector’s Edition

by admin September 27, 2025

The wait for Crimson Desert is almost over, and the Pearl Abyss team had not only a little more gameplay to showcase, but also an incredible Collector’s Edition, Deluxe, and Standard Edition of the game to show off as well. The Collector’s Edition of the game will feature a 17″ diorama of Kliff and Golden Star, a premium Greymane Brooch Pin, a cloth map of the land of Pywel, and much more. Not every CE is worth getting excited about, but this looks like a must-have. Let’s take a closer look at the release date trailer, and then a closer look at the CE.

What Pearl Abyss has pulled of in-engine is better than most teams manage with pre-rendered CGI. The trailer showcases some of the gritty stakes of the fight for Pywel, but also a closer look at that mechanical Golden Star dragon. Obviously we don’t have any info on this hulking beast yet, but it speaks to the grounded but otherworldly nature of the game.

We went hands-on with the game for an entire hour at Summer Games Fest, which you can read about right here. If you don’t have time to read that, then know that we also awarded it Best RPG of Summer Game Fest 2025, even against the heavy hitters present at that show! Excited? Let’s get a closer look at that Collector’s Edition.

Inside the box is everything you see above (and can read about below), as well as a few pieces of DLC bonuses as well:

Collector’s Edition | $279.99

Standard Edition | $69.99

  • Crimson Desert Full Game

It includes DLC bonuses below.

  • [Pre-order Only] Pre-order Exclusive Bonus – Khaled Shield

GDC founder says the event is “rapidly becoming a dinosaur”

by admin September 27, 2025

The founder of GDC, Chris Crawford, has suggested that the “gigantic costs” of the event, compared with the “microscopic costs” of interacting over the internet, mean GDC is “rapidly becoming a dinosaur.”

Crawford – who worked at Atari in the early 1980s and later created the groundbreaking Cold War simulation Balance of Power for the Macintosh – founded GDC back in 1988. The first conference was held at his house in California.

He later stepped away from running the rapidly growing event in the 1990s, following disputes with board members over the conference’s direction.

Chris Crawford | Image credit: Avatar CC BY-SA 3.0

Earlier this week, GDC rebranded itself as GDC Festival of Gaming. But The Guardian warned that “even a rebrand may not be able to save America’s most storied gaming event,” with games editor Keza MacDonald arguing that the conference is “prohibitively expensive” and noting that “a large percentage of the global video game development community is reluctant to visit the US.”

GamesIndustry.biz contacted Crawford over email to ask his opinion on the above. Despite protesting that he might not be able to “offer any useful thoughts on the future of GDC,” given that he has been out of the industry for so long, he provided the following statement:

“There has been profound change that undermines the value of GDC.

“When I founded it, there was no way for game developers to share their ideas; I created it to permit that idea-sharing that is so important. Nowadays, there are lots of ways for people to share. There are plenty of social forums for discussing just about every aspect of game design. We have interactive video for pulling people from all over the world together.

“Given the gigantic costs, in both time and money, of attending something like GDC, compared to the microscopic costs of interacting with people via Internet, it would seem that GDC is rapidly becoming a dinosaur.”

GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to GDC for comment, and we will update this article if we hear back.
