Bitcoin price eye $117K breakout as sell pressure drops
Crypto Trends

Bitcoin price eye $117K breakout as sell pressure drops

by admin September 16, 2025

After a turbulent start to September, Bitcoin is still trading just above $115,000, and sell pressure indicators point to a possible accumulation phase.

Summary

  • Bitcoin price is consolidating above $115K after a brief dip, with sell pressure showing signs of easing.
  • Accumulation is picking up, suggesting stronger hands are absorbing supply ahead of the next move.
  • Resistance at $117K remains key — a breakout could open the way to $124K, while failure risks retesting lower supports.

Bitcoin is currently trading at $115,954, down 0.5% over the previous day. Weekly values have ranged from $110,870 to $116,705, which puts the asset 6.6% below its peak of $124,128 on Aug. 14.

Although it is still down 2% over the last 30 days, Bitcoin (BTC) has increased 3.4% over the last week. A 46.7% increase in daily trading volume to $45.1 billion from the previous day suggests that market activity has resumed.

Derivatives also saw momentum, with volume rising 42.18% to $75.28 billion, though open interest dipped slightly by 1.32%, suggesting traders may be cautious about taking new positions.

Analysts flag easing Bitcoin sell pressure

On Sept. 16, crypto analyst Ali Martinez noted that Bitcoin’s Sell-Side Risk Ratio had dropped below 0.1%, a level often associated with local bottoms, reduced sell pressure, and accumulation phases. Additionally, he pointed out that $116,963 is a crucial supply wall where sellers might try to profit if Bitcoin keeps rising.

Meanwhile, CryptoQuant contributor Arab Chain pointed to a sharp rise in the Bitcoin Scarcity Index on Binance, the first spike since June. When exchange supply thins out, either as a result of large investor withdrawals or a decline in sell orders, this index often rises. When this last happened, Bitcoin rose to $124,000.

However, Arab Chain cautioned that if the spike fades quickly, it could reflect speculative activity rather than sustained buying. A prolonged positive reading, by contrast, could confirm the beginning of a strong accumulation phase.

Bitcoin price technical analysis

On its daily chart, Bitcoin shows consolidation just below resistance at $117,525, and it is currently trading near the upper Bollinger Band. While the relative strength index, which is at 58, indicates neutral momentum, the Momentum and MACD indicators flash buy signals, indicating a bullish short-term scenario.

Moving averages continue to be very supportive as Bitcoin trades above its 50-, 100-, and 200-day levels, all of which flash “buy.” This alignment indicates underlying strength, even though the commodity channel index and stochastic RSI point to overbought conditions and the possibility of a brief decline.

If Bitcoin breaks above the resistance level between $116,963 and $1117,525, it might retest its all-time high of $124,128 from August. However, the price may return to support at $112,244 and perhaps $106,963 if this is not done.

Crypto Lender Maple Expands to Tether-Backed Plasma

by admin September 16, 2025

Cryptocurrency lending platform Maple Finance has deployed syrupUSDT on Plasma, a payments-focused blockchain backed by Tether, in its first major move to expand the product beyond Ethereum.

Starting tomorrow, users will be able to deposit the token into a Midas-hosted vault that offers yield while distributing rewards tied to Plasma’s upcoming mainnet launch and token generation event. Future integrations with decentralized finance protocols on Plasma are planned as the network builds out.

“This launch underscores our excitement over Plasma and its importance as a payments ecosystem,” Maple CEO Sid Powell said in a statement. He added that distributing yield-bearing dollar products across chains is central to Maple’s push to grow liquidity and hit $5 billion in assets under management by the end of 2025.

Plasma is designed to process transactions quickly while focusing on USDT as its base asset. For Maple, the chain’s infrastructure could provide a natural fit for products like syrupUSDT, which package stablecoins into vaults that generate returns.

The launch continues a year of rapid growth for Maple, which has already expanded to Solana and Arbitrum. Its syrupUSDC recently crossed $1 billion in supply, underscoring the demand for tokenized yield products across blockchain ecosystems.

BTC Illiquid Supply Could Reach 8.3M by Q2 2032 Fidelity Predicts

by admin September 16, 2025

Around 42% of Bitcoin’s current circulating supply, or 8.3 million Bitcoin (BTC), could be “illiquid” by 2032 at the current rate of Bitcoin treasury firm buying, according to asset management firm Fidelity.

In a report published on Monday, Fidelity identified two groups whose supply could be considered illiquid, with the criteria being that their Bitcoin supply has ticked up each quarter or at least 90% of the time for the last four years.

Based on this, it found two cohorts: Long-term Bitcoin holders and publicly-traded companies with at least 1,000 Bitcoin, the latter of which have been growing this year.

Bitcoin’s illiquid supply means there is less available on the open market, which could be positive for the price of Bitcoin.

“We estimate that this combined group will hold over six million Bitcoin by the end of 2025 — or over 28% of the 21 million Bitcoin that will ever exist,” said Fidelity.

It found that long-term Bitcoin holders, defined as those who have not moved Bitcoin from their wallet in at least seven years, have not witnessed any decrease in supply since 2016.

The second group, publicly traded companies holding at least 1,000 BTC, has also generally held strong on their Bitcoin holdings, only witnessing a single quarter of supply decrease in Q2 2022.

This cohort may also increase in the future, as there are currently 105 publicly traded Bitcoin holding companies. Currently, the publicly traded companies hold more than 969,000 BTC, amounting to 4.61% of Bitcoin’s total supply, according to data from Bitbo.

42% of Bitcoin supply to become illiquid

Looking ahead, Fidelity predicts that 8.3 million BTC could become illiquid by the second quarter of 2032.

The firm arrived at the figure by assuming that the group of wallets holding BTC for at least seven years will continue to increase their supply at the same rate as in the past ten years.

The firm did not factor in additional supply shortages created by additional public companies.

“At the close of Q2 2025, Bitcoin’s circulating supply stood at roughly 19.8 million. Of that, we estimate that nearly 42% — or over 8.3 million Bitcoin — will be considered illiquid by Q2 2032.”

Potential sell-off by whales

The report highlighted that the two groups combined now hold Bitcoin worth $628 billion at an average price of $107,700, double last year, at the end of the second quarter.

Related:  Bitcoin whale is dumping again as BTC flatlines at $116K

This raises the question of what will happen to the price of Bitcoin should whales start selling their BTC stack.

Bitcoin whales have collectively sold BTC worth nearly $12.7 billion in the past 30 days, which is the largest sell-off since mid-2022. Meanwhile, the price of Bitcoin has decreased by 2% in the past 30 days, according to CoinGecko.

SEC, Gemini Reach Tentative Settlement in Crypto Lending Case

by admin September 16, 2025

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has reached a preliminary settlement with Gemini Trust, the crypto exchange run by Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, over its Gemini Earn program. The deal still needs final approval from the SEC, but could finally bring an end to the lawsuit that’s been hanging over the company since early 2023.

Background of the case

The SEC accused Gemini of failing to properly register its Gemini Earn lending program before offering it to everyday investors. Launched in 2021, the program let customers lend bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to Genesis Global Capital in return for interest. In the process, Gemini collected fees that went as high as 4.29%.

However, trouble began when Genesis suspended withdrawals in November 2022, following the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX. At that time, around 340,000 Gemini Earn customers were left without access to roughly $900 million in assets.

The SEC later filed a lawsuit in January 2023, arguing that Gemini and Genesis bypassed disclosure rules meant to protect investors. Genesis has since agreed to pay $21 million to settle without admitting wrongdoing.

Settlement details

In a letter filed on Monday in the Manhattan federal court, lawyers from both sides confirmed the settlement would “completely resolve” the lawsuit. They requested U.S. District Judge Edgardo Ramos to halt all deadlines and grant them time until December 15 to finalize the paperwork. As of now, the precise terms remain confidential, pending approval from SEC commissioners.

Legal experts suggest the penalty may fall between $10 million and $20 million—far lighter than originally feared and lower than penalties imposed during the previous administration.

Market impact

The settlement news came just days after Gemini’s successful market debut. The New York-based exchange raised $425 million in an initial public offering (IPO) last week, valuing the company at about $3.3 billion. On Monday, Gemini shares closed at $32.52, up $0.52 and 16% above the IPO price of $28, according to Reuters.

What’s next

If approved, the agreement would remove a significant legal hurdle for Gemini as it looks to expand its business following its public listing. For investors, the case is a reminder that crypto lending platforms come with regulatory risks and why clear disclosure rules are important for protecting customers.

Fragility or Back on Track? BTC Holds the Line at $115K

by admin September 16, 2025

Good Morning, Asia. Here’s what’s making news in the markets:

Welcome to Asia Morning Briefing, a daily summary of top stories during U.S. hours and an overview of market moves and analysis. For a detailed overview of U.S. markets, see CoinDesk’s Crypto Daybook Americas.

Bitcoin BTC$115,432.18 traded just above $115k in Asia Tuesday morning, slipping slightly after a strong start to the week.

The modest pullback followed a run of inflows into U.S. spot ETFs and lingering optimism that the Federal Reserve will cut rates next week. The moves left traders divided: is this recovery built on fragile foundations, or is crypto firmly back on track after last week’s CPI-driven jitters?

That debate is playing out across research desks. Glassnode’s weekly pulse emphasizes fragility. While ETF inflows surged nearly 200% last week and futures open interest jumped, the underlying spot market looks weak.

Buying conviction remains shallow, Glassnode writes, funding rates have softened, and profit-taking is on the rise with more than 92% of supply in profit.

Options traders have also scaled back downside hedges, pushing volatility spreads lower, which Glassnode warns leaves the market exposed if risk returns. The core message: ETFs and futures are supporting the rally, but without stronger spot flows, BTC remains vulnerable.

QCP takes the other side.

The Singapore-based desk says crypto is “back on track” after CPI confirmed tariff-led inflation without major surprises. They highlight five consecutive days of sizeable BTC ETF inflows, ETH’s biggest inflow in two weeks, and strength in XRP and SOL even after ETF delays.

Traders, they argue, are interpreting regulatory postponements as inevitability rather than rejection. With the Altcoin Season Index at a 90-day high, QCP sees BTC consolidation above $115k as the launchpad for rotation into higher-beta assets.

The divide underscores how Bitcoin’s current range near $115k–$116k is a battleground. Glassnode calls it fragile optimism; QCP calls it momentum. Which side is right may depend on whether ETF inflows keep offsetting profit-taking in the weeks ahead.

(CoinDesk)

Market Movement

BTC: Bitcoin is consolidating near the $115,000 level as traders square positions ahead of expected U.S. Fed policy moves; institutional demand via spot Bitcoin ETFs is supporting upside

ETH: ETH is trading near $4500 in a key resistance band; gains are being helped by renewed institutional demand, tightening supply (exchange outflows), and positive technical setups.

Gold: Gold continues to hold near record highs, underpinned by expectations of Fed interest rate cuts, inflation risk, and investor demand for safe havens; gains tempered somewhat by profit‑taking and a firmer U.S. dollar

Nikkei 225: Japan’s Nikkei 225 topped 45,000 for the first time Monday, leading Asia-Pacific gains as upbeat U.S.-China trade talks and a TikTok divestment framework lifted sentiment.

S&P 500: The S&P 500 rose 0.5% to close above 6,600 for the first time on Monday as upbeat U.S.-China trade talks and anticipation of a Fed meeting lifted stocks.

New US Crypto PAC With $100 Million Fund: Three Essential Priorities Outlined

by admin September 16, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

A new pro-crypto political action committee (PAC) has been established in the United States amid increased favorable legislation surrounding digital assets in the country under President Donald Trump’s second term in the White House.

$100 Million To Boost Pro-Crypto Candidates

The Fellowship PAC, unveiled through a press release on Monday, has pledged over $100 million to support candidates who advocate for innovation and the cryptocurrency sector, aiming to maintain America’s status as a global leader in digital assets.

What sets the Fellowship PAC apart from previous political efforts, according to their statement, is its commitment to transparency and trust. The organization emphasizes that its mission is to foster a political environment that supports the broader crypto ecosystem rather than serving narrow interests.

The new political action committee aims to build on the crypto regulatory framework being established under the Trump administration, which is viewed as a pathway for the US to become the world’s digital asset capital.

Progress has already been made in the form of the passage of the GENIUS Act for dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies, also known as stablecoins, being one of the most notorious successes for the cryptocurrency industry this year.

Super PACs Gear Up For 2026 Midterms

The Fellowship PAC’s objectives are clear: it seeks to support candidates dedicated to creating transparent and predictable regulations for digital assets. Additionally, the PAC aims to protect America’s edge in technology and entrepreneurship, ensuring that the innovation economy reflects American values of openness and fairness.

A crucial focus will also be on preventing the migration of talent and entrepreneurs overseas by maintaining the US as the premier destination for innovation, supported by clear regulatory guidelines. The PAC’s press release also noted:

Our differentiator is transparency and trust. This initiative is designed to align the interests of crypto entrepreneurs, policymakers, and the public, fostering accountability as we work to advance the ecosystem. This is just the beginning; we have more initiatives planned.

The launch of the Fellowship PAC follows a year of notable activity among crypto-focused political action committees, which are gearing up to increase their influence in upcoming special elections across the country.

As previously reported by Bitcoinist, super PACs like Fairshake, along with its affiliates Defend American Jobs and Protect Progress, have already invested approximately $136 million in supporting over 58 pro-crypto candidates during the 2024 election cycle.

With over $100 million in resources ready for the 2026 midterms, Fairshake is positioned to make a significant impact, bolstered by contributions from major players in the digital asset space, including Coinbase, Andreessen Horowitz, and Ripple.

Helius Shares Pump 141% Amid $500 Million Raise for Solana Treasury

by admin September 16, 2025

In brief

  • Publicly traded Helius Medical Technologies announced that it’s raising $500 million to establish a Solana treasury.
  • The firm’s stock price rose by more than 141% as of the close of trading Monday.
  • Helius Medical Technologies is not affiliated with notable Solana infrastructure startup, Helius.

Medical devices manufacturer Helius Medical Technologies has raised $500 million through a private placement in public equity (PIPE) to create a Solana treasury, the company announced on Monday, part of a growing list of Nasdaq-traded companies shifting their focus to accumulate SOL.

Venture capital firms Pantera Capital and Summer Capital led the offering, which also included Big Brain Holdings, Avenir, FalconX, Arrington Capital, Animoca Brands, and HashKey Capital, among others. The offering is expected to close on or around Thursday.

“We believe that Solana is a category-defining blockchain and the foundation on which a new financial system will be built,” said Dan Morehead, founder and managing partner of Pantera Capital.

The announcement follows closely after several others in recent months involving Solana treasuries as companies—many of them struggling—seek ways to benefit from the surge in digital asset markets. Their efforts have, in turn, helped fuel the rally in crypto prices this year. Solana was recently trading at $233, up nearly 60% over the past three months.

A Myriad market showed that investors are upbeat about Solana, with 90% of them saying it would sooner rise to $250 rather than sink to $130.

(Disclosure: Myriad is a prediction market and engagement platform developed by DASTAN, parent company of an editorially independent Decrypt.)

Helius shares closed at $18.27, up about 141% in Monday trading, regaining a small portion of ground it has lost over the past year. HSDT hit over $772 last December.

Participants in the PIPE, which Helius said was “oversubscribed,” purchased common stock (and/or pre-funded warrants to purchase shares) for $6.81 and stapled warrants to buy shares with an exercise price equal to $10.13 per stapled warrant. Investors can exercise the stapled warrants for three years from the issue date.

Stapled warrants are contractual agreements that are tied to another security and cannot be exchanged or sold alone. Companies use them to make an offer more inviting for investors.

The announcement led to a humorous moment when Mert Mumtaz, the CEO of Helius—an unaffiliated provider of infrastructure and tooling for Solana developers—wrote on Twitter that he had received more than 50 messages assuming his company was responsible for the treasury.

some personal news

No, in all seriousness, I’m not involved with this at all — the name is yet another coincidence.

The universe is quite literally trolling me at this point

Again: I am not involved, neither is @heliuslabs nor Helium nor Helio nor Heliux nor Helicopter https://t.co/u0HbDs0ydr

— mert | helius.dev (@0xMert_) September 15, 2025

“I’m not involved with this at all,” the prominent Solana ecosystem personality noted, adding: “The universe is quite literally trolling me at this point. Again: I am not involved, neither is Helius Labs nor Helium nor Helio nor Heliux nor Helicopter.”

On Monday, medical design firm Forward Industries completed its first major Solana acquisition, becoming the largest publicly traded Solana treasury after amassing nearly $1.6 billion worth of SOL.

Last week, Canada-based SOL Strategies started trading on the Nasdaq Exchange, increasing its exposure to investors beyond the Canadian Stock Exchange and OTC markets. The firm has about $100 million worth of SOL in its treasury, though users have pledged a much larger tally to its network validator business. Based on its August business update, SOL Strategies now has 3.6 million SOL delegated to its validators, or greater than $820 million in assets under delegation.

Earlier this month, medical device packaging company Sharps Technology announced the acquisition of 2 million Solana, creating a $400 million treasury. Over the past three weeks, DeFi Development Corp, previously known as Janover—a real estate financing platform turned AI services firm—has added more than 603,000 SOL, bringing its tally above 2 million SOL.

Consumer products manufacturer Upexi now also holds more than 2 million Solana, nearly tripling its total, after multiple SOL purchases since June. And Classover, an edtech company, announced in June that it had purchased about 6,500 SOL as the first step in a plan backed by a $500 million convertible note program dedicated to acquiring and staking SOL.

Coinbase-backed Base takes first steps toward potential token launch

Coinbase-backed Base takes first steps toward potential token launch

by admin September 16, 2025

Head of Base Jesse Pollak revealed that the Base network might finally launch its own token.

Summary

  • Base is exploring the launch of a network token, according to Jesse Pollak
  • Coinbase has been resisting its own token for a while
  • Regulatory changes in the United States are making an ICO more attractive

Base has unveiled a new roadmap that could fundamentally change its ecosystem. On Monday, September 15, at BaseCamp 2025 in Stowe, Vermont, Head of Base Jesse Pollak and the project team announced that the project is exploring the launch of its own network token.

The move could reshape Base from a utility chain into a full ecosystem, enabling developers to tap its capabilities directly. The chain, according to the team, will operate on the principles of operability and openness. In that light, the Base team also announced an open-source bridge between Base and Solana (SOL).

“We believe Base should be a bridge, not an island. We can’t bring the world onchain if everyone is building separate, siloed ecosystems. We want Base to be a hub for the entire onchain economy,” Base team.

Base will continue to build on Ethereum

Despite the major shift in philosophy, the team stressed that they will “remain deeply committed to Ethereum” (ETH). This signals that there are no plans to make Base a layer-1 chain. The team also stressed that they will work with U.S. regulators and legislators to make sure that the chain complies with all regulations.

Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, also confirmed the move, stating that it could help boost decentralization. However, he added that there are no definitive plans for the token at this time.

We’re exploring a Base network token.

It could be a great tool for accelerating decentralization and expanding creator and developer growth in the ecosystem.

To be clear, there are no definitive plans. We’re just updating our philosophy. As of now, we’re exploring it. https://t.co/BK3asbMpar

— Brian Armstrong (@brian_armstrong) September 15, 2025

Coinbase has long resisted launching its own token, instead opting to go public on the stock market. However, recent regulatory changes in the U.S. have made initial coin offerings less risky. With the Securities and Exchange Commission under new leadership, the risk of such a token being labeled a security is greatly diminished.

Bitcoin (BTC) Mining Profitability Fell in August, Jefferies Says

Bitcoin (BTC) Mining Profitability Fell in August, Jefferies Says

by admin September 15, 2025

Bitcoin BTC$115,463.37 mining profitability declined 5% last month primarily becuase of an increase in the network hashrate, investment bank Jefferies said in a research report Sunday.

“A hypothetical one EH/s fleet of BTC miners would have generated ~$55k/day in revenue during August, vs ~$58k/day in July and ~$44k a year ago,” wrote analysts led by Jonathan Petersen.

The hashrate refers to the total combined computational power used to mine and process transactions on a proof-of-work blockchain, and is a proxy for competition in the industry and mining difficulty. It is measured in exahashes per second (EH/s).

U.S.-listed mining companies mined 3,573 bitcoin in August versus 3,598 in July, the report noted, and these miners accounted for 26% of the Bitcoin network last month, unchanged from July.

MARA Holdings (MARA) mined the most bitcoin of the group, with 705,703 tokens, followed by IREN (IREN), Jefferies said.

MARA’s energized hashrate is still the largest of the group, at 59.4 EH/s, with CleanSpark (CLSK) second with 50 EH/s, the report added.

SEC, Gemini Trust Reach Agreement Over Lending Dispute

SEC, Gemini Trust Reach Agreement Over Lending Dispute

by admin September 15, 2025

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Gemini Trust Company filed a status update in court, letting a federal court know they had reached a “resolution in principle” to resolve a securities case stemming from a 2023 complaint.

In a Monday filing in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), the SEC and Gemini Trust said that, “subject to review and approval” by the commission, the two parties requested that all litigation in the civil case be indefinitely stayed.

The filing stated that both parties would file another status report if the case weren’t resolved by Dec. 15.

Source: SDNY

The securities case against Gemini Trust and Genesis Global Capital began with a complaint filed by the SEC in January 2023. The commission alleged that Genesis and Gemini “engaged in an unregistered offer and sale of securities to US retail investors” between February 2021 and November 2022.

The agreement in principle likely marked one of the last steps in the winding down of the case against the two firms after the SEC and Genesis announced a $21 million settlement in 2024.

The agency, then under acting SEC chair Mark Uyeda, told Gemini in February that it would not recommend pursuing an enforcement action as part of a separate investigation against the company.

Related: Gemini (GEMI) stock soars in Nasdaq debut amid crypto IPO boom

The securities case alleged that investors sent Genesis assets through Gemini’s Earn Program with the expectation that the company would pay interest. The SEC said that both companies raised “billions of dollars’ worth of crypto assets, principally from US retail investors,” without registering with the regulator.

“[I]nvestors lacked material information about the Gemini Earn program that would have been relevant to their investment decisions,” alleged the January 2023 complaint. “Instead of providing investors with the full panoply of information required by the federal securities laws, Defendants have instead only made selective and inadequate disclosures.”

Trump and Gemini: Partners in crypto policy?

Gemini co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss were financial and personal supporters of US President Donald Trump during his 2024 campaign and have continued to maintain close ties to the White House this year.

The twins were present during the signing of the GENIUS stablecoin bill, and reportedly pressed for Trump to reconsider the nomination of Brian Quintenz as chair of the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

The White House asked a Senate committee to delay a hearing on Quintenz’s nomination before it broke for an August recess, and, as of Monday, no other hearing had been scheduled.

Last week, Quintenz released screenshots of texts between himself and the Winklevosses from July that suggested they were looking for certain assurances regarding enforcement actions if his nomination were to move forward.

Gemini also began its initial public offering on Friday, reportedly raising $425 million with 15.2 million shares.
