AI voice clones created in minutes now sound so real that your ears may never trust another voice again

by admin September 29, 2025

  • AI-generated voices now mimic humans so convincingly that detection is nearly impossible
  • Creating a convincing voice clone now takes minutes and minimal expertise
  • Some synthetic voices were actually rated more trustworthy than real human recordings

For years, many people assumed that AI-generated speech could always be identified by its slightly “fake” qualities.

New research from Queen Mary University of London challenges this assumption, showing current AI voice technology has reached a level where “voice clones” and deepfakes are nearly indistinguishable from real recordings.

In the study, participants compared human voices with two forms of synthetic audio: cloned voices designed to imitate real speakers and voices generated from an LLM system without specific counterparts.

Beyond realism and into dominance

Listeners frequently struggled to distinguish between the two, suggesting the technology has entered a phase where human-like realism is no longer an aspiration, but a reality.

The research team investigated not only whether participants could distinguish between synthetic and real voices, but also how they perceived them.

Surprisingly, both types of AI-generated voices were evaluated as more dominant than human ones, and in some cases, they were judged more trustworthy.

Dr. Nadine Lavan, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Queen Mary University of London, stressed how easily and cheaply her team created these voice clones.

“AI-generated voices are all around us now, it was only a matter of time until AI technology began to produce naturalistic, human-sounding speech, the process required minimal expertise, only a few minutes of voice recordings, and almost no money,” she said.

She said that the ease of use shows how far the technology has advanced in a short time.

Such accessibility creates opportunities in fields such as education, communication, and accessibility, where bespoke synthetic voices could enhance engagement and reach.

Just as AI writers raise questions about originality, copyright, and misuse, AI voice generation prompts debates over ownership of identity and consent.

If realistic audio can be created from just a short sample, the risks of unauthorized cloning become difficult to ignore.

As AI tools continue to expand in capability and accessibility, the challenge will be ensuring that benefits are realized without opening new avenues for deception.

Understanding how people respond to these voices is only the first step in addressing the ethical, legal, and social implications of a technology that is no longer futuristic, but firmly present.

How Europe was able to back up Rory McIlroy’s words and win on the road

by admin September 29, 2025

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Rory McIlroy was nowhere to be found.

Two years after he had called his shot and predicted a win at Bethpage Black, Shane Lowry’s birdie putt on the 18th green Sunday transformed McIlroy’s comments from confident to prophetic. The celebration, however, had started without him.

A gleeful Lowry bounced to the tune of a heavily European crowd that serenaded him with chants. Jon Rahm hugged fellow Spaniard and vice captain José María Olazábal — captain of the last team to win a road cup in 2012 — who cried on his shoulder. European captain Luke Donald was finally able to exhale.

McIlroy had lost his blockbuster singles match against Scottie Scheffler 1-down and for a moment, the chance of being on the wrong end of the biggest collapse in Ryder Cup history appeared plausible. Down 12-5, the United States team had mounted a comeback and made the Ryder Cup as close as everyone thought it could be.

Suddenly, every point mattered. Suddenly, the United States fans had come alive, chanting for their team and cheering on its golfers rather than jeering at the Europeans. Suddenly, McIlroy had to rely on anyone but himself.

“It obviously was really tight there at the end,” McIlroy said. “It was a bit stressful.”

So McIlroy stayed out on the course, bouncing between Tyrrell Hatton’s match and Robert MacIntyre’s, trying to add support with sheer presence alone. Even when Lowry’s putt that retained the cup dropped, he remained out there through the final match that gave Europe victory on a knife’s edge: 15-13.

“It’s nice to be right. I’m not right all the time,” McIlroy said of his prediction. “I think when we won in Rome, the wheels were set in motion to try to do something that had not been done in over a decade. We believed a lot in our continuity.”

Beyond returning 11 of 12 players from Rome, there is a certain cohesion with this European team that is perhaps difficult to distill but easy to see. It’s there in the way the golfers celebrate when they win a hole or a match, but also in the way they respond when they don’t. It’s palpable when the first place they go to upon making a crucial putt is to relish in the moment with their partner. It’s evident when even the way they embrace projects a kind of closeness that doesn’t signal business partner but rather brother in arms.

PGA Tour, 72-hole stroke play golf requires an immense amount of concentration and focus. It is a singular endeavor that demands patience and rewards consistency more than aggression. Match play and alternate shot format do too, but over the past two Ryder Cups, it has become clear that while the Americans view those formats as obstacles to overcome with talent, the Europeans see it as an opportunity to showcase their unity (they are 14-2 in foursomes over that time). Team play is, unequivocally, their strength and what allowed them to both race out to an insurmountable lead this week and also stem the red tide of points that won or tied 11 of 12 singles matches Sunday.

In nearly every Ryder Cup over the past 12 years, the United States has held the talent advantage. It’s what has led to dominant wins at Whistling Straits in 2021 and Hazeltine in 2016. But even in losses, Europeans found glimmers of joy, in part because of the way they view this week.

Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy won their second straight Ryder Cup. Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images

“Ryder Cup weeks are the best weeks of our lives,” Donald said. “I think those weeks we spend together are the ones we remember the most and the ones we cherish the most because of the time we get to spend with each other. That’s a big part of my captaincy is to create an environment where these guys are having the best weeks of their lives, honestly.”

It is easy to chalk up the European’s stunning performance through the first two days of this year’s event to things outside of the American’s control.

“They made more putts.” Keegan Bradley said multiple times.

“Luck was on their side,” Bryson DeChambeau said Friday.

Maybe it is that simple. But time and again, Europe has preached and proved that it’s not. That it takes chemistry as much as it takes data. That it takes emotion as much as it takes talent and that it takes precision off the course as much as on it.

“The level of professionalism he’s shown us the last four years,” Jon Rahm said of Donald. “His attention to detail …”

“His communication skills …” McIlroy added.

On Sunday, with the cup already in his hands, Donald allowed a peek into just what some of that looks like. There is the fact that the European uniforms were designed after what each of the past four teams that won on away soil wore, but that’s just where things begin.

Donald said the hotel room where the team is staying this week had cracks in the doors that let light in so they patched them up. He said that the bedding in the rooms only had sheets so they changed it to make it more comfortable for players. He said they swapped out the shampoo in the rooms for one with better smell and better quality.

“It’s just taking the time and having the care that you want to do everything you can to kind of give these guys the best opportunity,” Donald said. “You want to create an environment where they can succeed.”

Perhaps the greatest feat this particular European team has achieved is that, under Donald, they have mastered the balance between preparing for what is tangible — be it exact pairings, bed sheets, time zone differences or nailing down what skill the venue requires — while perfecting the intangible.

“I feel like the power of this, the power of the group, who knows what it is, that ability to lock in, the ability to just want it that little bit more,” Justin Rose said when asked about being the best putter in the Ryder Cup for the second straight time. “The answer to your question is I don’t know, other than the badge and the boys, honestly. That’s all that matters, honestly, the badge and the boys.”

Late Sunday afternoon, with both retention and victory in hand, McIlroy finally made the climb up the 18th, red-faced and running on empty. For three days, he had entered the cauldron of Long Island on a mission, endured it through heckles and insults from American fans, and emerged from it vindicated and victorious, ready to be drowned by a multitude of European supporters who had been waiting to chant his name.

“Roooooory! Roooooory!”

When the Europeans won at Medinah in 2012, he was only 21 years old, playing in his second Ryder Cup. Now, here McIlroy was 36, a Grand Slam champion and at the center of another away victory like a perfect bookend.

“We’ll always remember this. We’ll always go down in history,” Donald said. “Future generations will talk about this team tonight and what they did and how they were able to overcome one of the toughest environments in all of sport and that’s what is inspiring to me, that’s what Rory gets and all these other 11 guys get, as well.”

As Donald finished his answer, sitting next to him, McIlroy wiped the tears from his eyes.

21Shares Updates Solana ETF Filing Ahead of SEC October Decisions

by admin September 29, 2025

21Shares, an ETF issuer, has filed an updated S-1 for its proposed Solana (SOL) ETF, providing fresh details on staking and in-kind redemptions

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is reviewing the filing, with decisions expected in October. The amendment explains how the fund would handle redemptions in kind and clarifies staking procedures.

Other issuers, including Franklin, Fidelity, CoinShares, Bitwise, Grayscale, VanEck, and Canary, have also submitted similar revisions in recent days as they actively respond to SEC feedback. Currently, about nine applications for Solana ETFs are pending with the SEC.

SEC Decisions in October Could Shake The Markets

Meanwhile, October is gaining significance as a month for the crypto sector. The Several applications, including ETFs related to Solana, XRP, Litecoin, as well as Cardano, are expected to be decided upon by the SEC. Deadlines for these filings are spread throughout the month, and the SEC recently removed all delay notices, leaving the door open for approvals.

Earlier this month, the SEC approved updated listing standards for crypto ETFs, which may have streamlined the approval process.

Under the new rules, a crypto ETF must be listed on a heavily monitored market, have a futures contract overseen by the CFTC for six months, or be linked to an existing ETF holding at least 40% of the cryptocurrency.

How Silent Hill F Is Connected To The Rest Of The Series

by admin September 29, 2025

Since the announcement of Silent Hill f back in 2022, I’ve seen one question circulating online with far more fervor and frequency than any other: Does it have any connection to the rest of the series? After years of waiting and speculation, we finally have an answer.

Warning: Silent Hill f spoilers to follow.

If you’ve rolled credits on Silent Hill f, you’re familiar with its shocking first ending. In it, it is revealed that the Hinako exploring Ebisugaoka is actually a twenty-something-year-old Hinako experiencing deep, drug-induced psychosis. Though players have witnessed what seemingly started out as an ordinary day for our high school-age main character, we come to discover that, in the real world, it’s Hinako’s wedding day, and she’s spent the last few hours of it murdering her friends and family members. Her actions are, of course, horrific, but make sense if you do a little digging around.

Turns out, Hinako has been taking Kakura-Makakura, a natural medicine made from ground Hakkokusou seeds that are then placed in small, red capsules. Originally given to her by her friend Shu to help with recurring tension headaches, it becomes obvious that the apprentice apothecary gave her the medication without properly assessing the risk in taking it or properly considering its reputation. A stack of journal entries on Shu’s desk gives us minimal insight into the medicine, as he writes he prescribed it to her to “curb her reliance” on traditional medication and made it by combining peony and kudzu root. Fortunately, documents scattered throughout the town and spirit realm give us the opportunity to learn a bit more about the medication ourselves.

Hinako looks at a pond surrounded by white flowers in Silent Hill f.

According to research papers found in Silent Hill f, Hakkokusou is also referred to as “the flower of the gods.” The documents go on to state that the herb is an important part of folklore, as it is known for giving those who consume its seeds the ability to converse with gods, visit their lands, and awaken dormant powers–all of which happen to Hinako. Lastly, the papers describe Hakkokusou as “notoriously difficult to cultivate as it requires a very specific environment in which to grow” and is “rarely found in the wild.” It makes sense then, that the one place we find Hakkokusou in Silent Hill f is near Shu’s home, which also serves as the town’s apothecary.

Gallery

Upon reaching Shu’s house, you’ll stumble upon a small pond surrounded by large, white flowers unlike any you’ve seen around town–and this is precisely where Silent Hill f shows us how it connects to the other Silent Hill games. Though referred to as Hakkokusou in Silent Hill f, Silent Hill fans will recognize these flowers as While Claudia, a “perennial herb found near water” that features white blossoms and contains hallucinogenic seeds.

Since the series’ beginning, White Claudia has played a notable role in Silent Hill. In the first game, protagonist Harry Mason stumbles upon several documents indicating the game’s cultists have been consuming the flower’s seed during their ceremonies, somewhat explaining their bizarre behavior. While visiting the town’s hospital, he also finds a broken bottle of Aglaophotis–a thick, red liquid later revealed to be refined White Claudia.

In Silent Hill 3, Harry’s daughter, Heather Mason, calls a pendant her father gave her one of her “most treasured belongings.” If you check it’s item description, it reads, “There’s a jewel inside, like a little red tablet.” Later in the game, we find out that this jewel is actually a small vial of Aglaophotis as well. Most recently, White Claudia made an appearance in Silent Hill 2’s remake, in which developer Bloober Team added a new ending that sees James take the substance and begin to hallucinate his wife Mary back before she developed her terminal illness.

Heather’s necklace.

And to make this theory even more convincing, it’s worth delving a bit more into White Claudia’s liquid form, Aglaophotis. According to Fandom’s Silent Hill page for the in-game drug, “Aglaophotis may have been a factual herb, sometimes connected in identity to the European peony. The Greek doctor Dioscorides named Aglaophotisas a member of the peony family, Paeoniaceae.” This directly coincides with Shu’s journal entries, which describe him as using peonies to produce Kakura-Makakura. Lastly, Agura no Hotei-sama–one of the item’s required to attain Silent Hill f’s Fox Wedding ending–is described as a medicine bottle containing a red liquid, similar to Aglaophotis. Later on, Hinako is forced to drink the refined “flower of the gods” to help steady herself in the spirit world.

So although Silent Hill f might not take place in Silent Hill, it feels safe to say that it definitely takes place in the same world and tugs at the same threads and themes as its predecessors. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s among the best games in the series, with our Silent Hill f review calling it, “a visual spectacle, a mastercraft in psychological horror, a work of narrative brilliance, and a new benchmark for the Silent Hill series.”

Call of Duty says its anti-cheat for Black Ops 7 has ‘one of the strongest detection systems we have ever built,’ and this week’s beta will help put it to the test

by admin September 29, 2025

Ahead of this weekend’s beta test for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Activision is reiterating its focus on anti-cheat to maintain the integrity of the game on PC.

Along with requiring Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 to even launch the game on PC, Activision says its RICOCHET Anti-Cheat system has evolved over the past year in Black Ops 6 to try and stay ahead of cheat-makers worldwide.

Image via Activision

“Over the last year, Team RICOCHET has trained advanced machine learning systems on millions of hours of gameplay,” Activision said in a new blog post. “These upgrades are smarter, faster, and more reliable than ever; built not just to catch cheaters, but to set the new standard for fair play and evolve with the game itself.”

With these changes, the company says RICOCHET now has “one of the strongest detection systems we have ever built, designed to separate natural aim from the precision patterns of an aimbot,” faster wall-hack detection, and a layered defense that “with constant and independent updates, makes it tougher for cheaters to adapt and easier for us to stay ahead.”

Call of Duty players have heard this all before in recent years as the hacking epidemic has grown with crossplay and free-to-play Warzone accounts, but the fact is anti-cheat is a never-ending battle against cheat providers who are always trying to stay one step ahead to make a quick buck by selling cheats. And Activision says it’s working to fight on that front, too.

“We’re striking cheat makers and sellers from every angle: in-game detections that stop them cold, and legal action that dismantles their operations,” Activision said. “And we’re not stopping there. Significant continued improvements to our systems are coming, including those that detect external hardware.”

The BO7 beta, which begins this Thursday, Oct. 2, is part of the process of ensuring that the anti-cheat systems are at work, Activision said, calling it “a critical test for the systems we have online under real player conditions” as players will inevitably try hacking in the beta test.

Image via Activision

“We are actively monitoring matches, gathering data across thousands of unique hardware setups, and removing cheaters in real time,” the company said. “The beta allows us to measure how our detection tools perform when faced with live attempts to cheat, and to fine-tune how quickly and effectively we strike back. Every report, every flag, and every removal during the beta feeds directly into stronger responses tomorrow.”

Altcoin 24H Futures Volume Surpasses BTC and ETH: Warning Sign Or Market Shift?

by admin September 29, 2025

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure

The altcoin market is navigating a period of volatility and uncertainty, with traders closely watching Bitcoin and Ethereum as they attempt to reclaim key levels. For many investors, the long-awaited altseason—a period where alternative cryptocurrencies outperform BTC—remains more of a hopeful narrative than a present reality. With BTC and ETH dominating market sentiment, smaller assets are caught in a tug-of-war between fading confidence and renewed optimism.

Despite the uncertainty, key data points suggest altcoins are heating up beneath the surface. Futures volumes have started to climb again, and liquidity is showing signs of shifting away from major coins into higher-risk plays. Historically, this kind of behavior often precedes strong rotations within the crypto market, where capital flows into mid- and low-cap tokens once confidence in BTC and ETH stabilizes.

For now, investors remain cautious, with many awaiting confirmation that bullish momentum will return before committing more aggressively. The coming weeks will be critical: if Bitcoin and Ethereum manage to hold above support and reestablish an upward trend, altcoins could be positioned for explosive growth. Until then, volatility will likely define trading conditions, leaving investors balancing both risk and opportunity.

Altcoin Futures Volume Signaling A Move

The altcoin market is drawing increased attention after 24H futures trading volume surpassed that of Bitcoin and Ethereum, according to the latest market data. This shift highlights a surge in speculative activity, with investors pouring liquidity into higher-risk assets. Analyst Ted Pillows explains that despite last week’s sharp flush-out, which cleared overleveraged positions across multiple altcoins, retail traders have quickly returned to the market, embracing what he calls a “full degen mode” approach.

Altcoin 24H volume surpasses BTC and ETH | Source: Ted Pillows

This dynamic raises both opportunities and risks. Elevated trading activity in altcoin derivatives reflects renewed appetite for risk-taking, signaling that investor sentiment has not been entirely derailed by recent volatility.

On the other hand, history shows that when altcoin futures volumes climb disproportionately compared to BTC and ETH, the market often faces heightened liquidation risk. Leveraged bets amplify price swings, and even small corrections can cascade into massive liquidations, dragging prices lower across the board.

Whether it materializes as a breakout to new highs or another round of forced liquidations depends largely on Bitcoin’s ability to stabilize and broader macroeconomic conditions. For now, the message is clear: retail enthusiasm has returned, volumes are rising, and altcoins are once again the focal point of speculative trading. While this sets the stage for explosive price action, it also reinforces the need for caution as the risk of another major liquidation event looms.

Altcoin Market Consolidates

The chart of the total crypto market cap excluding the top 10 coins shows that altcoins continue to trade in a decisive zone around $303B. After several months of consolidation, the market cap has formed a base above the $250B region, a level that acted as resistance in 2023 and now serves as support. This structural shift suggests that altcoins are maintaining strength despite recent volatility in Bitcoin and Ethereum.

The moving averages highlight the trend more clearly: the 50-week SMA remains above the 200-week SMA, keeping a long-term bullish bias intact. However, the market has struggled to reclaim the $400B mark, a key resistance area tested multiple times since early 2024. Each rejection at this level has led to sharp retracements, signaling the importance of $400B as a breakout threshold for the next altseason.

Current price action shows tightening around the 50- and 100-week SMAs, reflecting indecision but also the potential for a strong move once momentum returns. A sustained close above $320B could signal renewed bullish momentum, while a breakdown below $280B may confirm deeper corrections.

Woman Pleads Guilty to $7 Billion Bitcoin Fraud Scheme in UK

by admin September 29, 2025

In brief

  • Zhimin Qian pleaded guilty to criminal acquiring and possessing criminal property and awaits sentencing.
  • She defrauded 128,000 Chinese individuals, ultimately turning illegally obtained funds into Bitcoin.
  • That Bitcoin was seized between 2018-2021 and is now valued around $7 billion.

Chinese national Zhimin Qian pleaded guilty to acquiring and possessing criminal property of 61,000 Bitcoin, now valued just shy of $7 billion, in a UK court on Monday.

The conviction follows a seven-year investigation into international money laundering where it was discovered that Qian, who also goes by Yadi Zhang, organized a large-scale fraudulent investment scheme that defrauded 128,000 individuals.

“Today’s guilty plea marks the culmination of years of dedicated investigation by the Met’s Economic Crime teams and our partners,” Will Lyne, The Met’s head of economic and cybercrime command, said in a statement.

“This is one of the largest money laundering cases in UK history and among the highest-value cryptocurrency cases globally,” he added “I am extremely proud of the team.”

Qian conducted the scheme between 2014-2017, defrauding individuals and ultimately turning the illegally obtained funds into Bitcoin. In 2018, she fled China and entered the UK with false documentation and later attempted to launder the money through property purchases and with the help of a conspirator, Jian Wen.

The Met was able to seize 61,000 Bitcoin between 2018 and 2021 in what it now calls the world’s largest crypto seizure. Wen was convicted of money laundering last year, and was ordered to pay more than $3 million for her role. She was sentenced to more than six years in prison.

Civil proceedings for the recovered funds are now ongoing, but a UK-based legal partner recently told Decrypt it will be a “considerable challenge” for Chinese investors to demonstrate legitimate proprietary claims to the funds.

“Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are increasingly being used by organized criminals to disguise and transfer assets, so that fraudsters may enjoy the benefits of their criminal conduct,” said Crown Prosecution Services Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Robin Weyell, in a statement.

“The CPS is committed to working closely with law enforcement and investigatory authorities, to bring to justice individuals and companies who engage in laundering criminal proceeds of a cryptocurrency fraud,” she added.

Qian was remanded into custody and will be sentenced at a later date following her guilty plea.

Control is 90% off in the Steam Autumn Sale, meaning you can read some of the finest redacted documents in videogames for just $4

by admin September 29, 2025

Control is, for me, one of those games that can make playing everything else feel a little bit worse. Remedy simply nailed the paranormal bureaucratic atmosphere too hard. After playing Control back in 2019, I have to live with the faint wish that whatever game I spend time with would give me more opportunities to interact with unfathomable triangles. I now yearn to believe a postbox could imperil an entire town. Every collectible text document that doesn’t feature ominous redactions now feels like a wasted opportunity.

My time in the Oldest House left me with a mild yet incurable brain sickness. And it’s one that you can contract yourself for just $4 thanks to the Steam Autumn Sale. Control has only been 90% off one other time, during a weeklong sale in August. Otherwise, this is the lowest price it’s ever been on Steam.

Now, there are some detractors in the world who might try to convince you that Control’s shooting isn’t terribly impressive, so it can’t be that great. You can safely ignore these misguided souls. No matter what they’ve convinced themselves, Control isn’t a game about shooting. It’s a game about throwing forklifts with your mind.

SEC Chairman Marks Crypto as ‘Top Priority’, Big XRP News Ahead?

by admin September 29, 2025

  • What’s coming for XRP?
  • Is $10 XRP realistic?

On Monday, September 29, Paul Atkins, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), publicly named crypto as a top priority for the agency during a brief interview with renowned American journalist Eleanor Terrett.

Paul’s statement has sparked fresh excitement across the crypto community as it aligns with growing speculation that the broader crypto market, with XRP at the center of attention, may be gearing up for major developments in the coming month.

What’s coming for XRP?

Atkins’ remarks came just hours after Eleanor Terrett broke the news that the SEC had asked issuers of XRP, Solana, Cardano, and Dogecoin ETFs to withdraw their pending 19b-4 filings.

While some commentators initially viewed the move as a setback for the crypto community, Terrett clarified that the opposite is true — the request is meant to speed up the approval process for these ETFs.

The withdrawal requests are consistent with the SEC’s recent approval of generic listing standards for all crypto ETFs. These new standards eliminate the need for issuers to submit individual 19b-4 forms. Instead, only an S-1 filing will be required, streamlining the process and paving the way for faster approvals.

With more than a dozen investment funds already filing for an XRP ETF and deadlines starting this week, the XRP community is increasingly optimistic that the altcoin could see a major breakout as early as October.

Is $10 XRP realistic?

Although XRP has struggled repeatedly to break through the $3.60 resistance level, market watchers remain confident that October could be the month when the token finally clears that barrier.

Source: CoinMarketCap

With the first XRP ETF expected to launch in October, community sentiment has shifted toward the possibility that XRP may soon reach price levels once thought “unrealistic.”

Industry experts predict that demand from institutional funds, combined with Ripple’s ongoing partnerships, could push XRP toward the $5–$7 range in the short term, while setting the stage for a long-term surge toward $10.

Capcom warn that Monster Hunter Rise, World and Wilds might not run on Windows 10 PCs after October 14th

by admin September 29, 2025

Your cuddly dinosaur aunties at Capcom have warned that they can’t “guarantee” various Monster Hunter games will run on Windows 10 PCs after uncle Microsoft end support for the operating system on October 14th this year.

When that fateful day comes to pass, Capcom “will no longer guarantee that Monster Hunter: World, Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Wilds will run on Windows 10 systems.” Which isn’t to say that these games will immediately become unplayable, but “future system updates or game title updates may make the game incompatible on Windows 10 systems”.

The developers add that if you have trouble with those Monster Hunter games on Windows 10 PCs after October 14th, “support can only be provided based on information from before support for Windows 10 was discontinued”, as they’ll be discontinuing services for investigating problems when playing on Windows 10.

If this is the first you’ve heard of Windows 10 being sunsetted/given the old heave-ho/left crying by the roadside, Microsoft have said that Windows 10 apps and drivers will continue to boot and run normally after the cessation of official support, but you won’t get any more free security updates, bug fixes and big feature updates.

It’s not quite as cut-and-dried as that in practice. Microsoft 365 apps running on personal and commercial Windows 10 PCs will get security updates until October 10th 2028, and feature updates until August 2026.

Microsoft are also offering a paid extended security update subscription for people who want to maintain Windows 10 beyond the cut-off date, with availability dependent on region and which version of the OS you’re running. In good news for people resident in the European Economic Area, Microsoft have bowed to pressure from consumer protection organisation Euroconsumers (via Particle Collider Gamer) by making ESU updates free in the EEA until October 2026.

Windows10mageddon threatens to leave a lot of PC users in the lurch, though there’s a certain amount of Y2K-style hysteria about the fallout. According to one study, around half of Windows PCs still don’t run Windows 11. If your machine doesn’t have the specs for Windows 11, it seems like you’ll need to buy a fresh one. I expect there will be plenty more bulletins from game publishers encouraging players to update their systems.

This article has been updated to mention Microsoft’s recent decision to make ESU updates free to people in the EEA until October 2026.
