401(k) Crypto Retirement plans ‘bigger’ than Bitcoin ETF approval: analyst

by admin August 19, 2025

The inclusion of cryptocurrency in US retirement plans could mark a milestone for Bitcoin adoption and unlock billions of dollars in new capital, potentially pushing the asset above $200,000 by the end of 2025, according to André Dragosch, the head of European research at crypto asset manager Bitwise.

President Donald Trump paved the way for cryptocurrency inclusion in US 401(k) retirement plans after signing an executive order on Aug. 7, granting Americans access to digital assets through their retirement plans.

The inclusion of crypto in 401(k) plans may be even more significant for the Bitcoin (BTC) price than the approval of the US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in January 2024, Dragosch said.

This “bullish” development may be even “bigger than the US Bitcoin ETF approval itself,” signaling another $122 billion worth of new capital, assuming a modest 1% portfolio allocation, Dragosch told Cointelegraph during the Chain Reaction daily X spaces show on Monday, throwing in a price prediction for good measure:

“The official prediction remains $200,000 by the end of the year.”

“If you look at 401(K) and defined-contribution retirement plans in the US, they are huge,” said Dragosch, adding that 1% is a “relatively conservative” allocation estimate for the $12.2 trillion industry.

Including digital assets in retirement plans will enable 401(k) portfolio managers to invest in Bitcoin ETFs, which may push Bitcoin’s price to new all-time highs, flashing another optimistic signal for Bitwise’s $200,000 Bitcoin price target for the end of 2025.

Fed policy, retirement plans seen as dual drivers

Based on Bitwise’s survey for financial advisers, most portfolio managers are more likely to recommend a 2.5% or 3% Bitcoin allocation for retirement plans, suggesting more significant inflows than the initial 1% allocation.

The first Bitcoin inflows from retirement plan managers may come as soon as this fall, coinciding with the first expected interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve, which may drive Bitcoin to new highs, said Dragosch, adding:

“If you see further Fed rate cuts, there’s definitely a case for $200,000 by the end of the year.”

Markets are pricing in an 83% chance that the Fed will keep interest rates steady during the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Sept. 17, according to the latest estimates of the CME Group’s FedWatch tool.

Beyond improving monetary policy expectations, Bitcoin adoption may also be accelerated by the financial incentive of 401(k) plan providers to offer Bitcoin ETF exposure.

BlackRock, Fidelity and Vanguard are among the largest retirement plan providers in the US. While Vanguard has yet to “greenlight” crypto ETFs, “BlackRock and Fidelity have a huge economic incentive to include these Bitcoin ETFs in their standard plans,” said Dragosch.

BlackRock is the issuer of the largest Bitcoin ETF, the iShares Bitcoin Trust, with over $84 billion in assets under management, accounting for 57.5% of the total market share, while Fidelity’s ETF is the second-largest, holding  $22.4 billion, accounting for 15.3% of the total market share, Dune data shows.

Last Friday, US Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Paul Atkins confirmed that the regulatory agency is working with the Trump administration to enable retail investors’ retirement plan access to private equity, including crypto assets, but urged the necessity of “proper guardrails” around alternative investments.

Unprecedented Video Shows Catfish Climbing Straight Up a Waterfall

by admin August 19, 2025

In the wild, catfish lead elusive lives, evading detection from scientists hoping to learn more about their lifestyles. And so, when police received reports of weird catfish clumps at the bottom of a waterfall, they immediately contacted a team of scientists to do some detective work.

After watching the fish for about 20 hours, the researchers arrived at the conclusion that these Rhyacoglanis paranensis—an orange-and-black species of bumblebee catfish common to South America—were scaling steep, vertical waterfalls as a team. A paper published August 8 in the Journal of Fish Biology records this bizarre yet remarkable moment.

© Manoela M. F. Marinho

“I would say it was a delightful surprise to all of us, crazy about fish, to witness all the tiny bumblebee catfishes gathering in a huge effort to climb the rocky walls—a great moment!” Manoela M. F. Marinho, study lead author and a biologist at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, told Gizmodo in an email.

The secret life of catfish hikers, explained

© Manoela M. F. Marinho

The catfish started their climb after 6 p.m., gathering by the thousands at the bottom of small waterfalls. The steeper the climb, the more the fish appeared to wiggle solo; some even slithered upside down across the ceilings of crevices. More teamwork was on display near flatter rocks, where the catfish climbed on top of each other to get over the rock.

The researchers aren’t entirely sure why the fish are engaging in this behavior. Based on dissections and the timing of the sighting, they believe the catfish were likely migrating upriver to reproduce. They also didn’t appear to have eaten. But this behavior does appear to be instinctual: “They also climbed artificial objects, such as our plastic pail,” the paper reports.

The study demonstrates the value of field observations in ecology and how chasing down strange reports can lead to valuable and unexpected discoveries.

Personally, I’ve always thought catfish were cool. There’s something oddly charming about their flat, sausage-like build. And now that we know they’re good hikers? Even cooler.

How Skubal and Skenes dominate MLB, according to teammates

by admin August 19, 2025

  • Jesse RogersAug 19, 2025, 07:00 AM ET

    Close

Jesse joined ESPN Chicago in September 2009 and covers MLB for ESPN.com.

Both of MLB’s 2025 Cy Young favorites came from humble pitching beginnings. Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes started his meteoric rise to stardom at the Air Force Academy, while Detroit Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal came of age at Seattle University. Neither place screams baseball immortality, but both pitchers could be flirting with historic achievements for the rest of their careers provided they stay healthy.

Skenes was the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year, while Skubal won the American League Cy Young Award last season — and their paths recently crossed as the 2025 All-Star Game starting pitchers in Atlanta. As they head down the stretch with the opportunity to collect more hardware this season, ESPN asked their teammates, team personnel and Skubal and Skenes themselves what makes the two best pitchers in the sport so special.

“Really advanced stuff and fill up the strike zone; they go right at guys,” Tigers starter Casey Mize said, summing up the feelings of those who have watched both aces. “So, they’re in advantageous counts a lot, applying a lot of pressure. The biggest thing to worry about is getting jumped early in counts, so they have to be good early on. But it feels like when they get strike one, the at-bat is over.”

‘He’s a guy that you can talk to when he’s starting’

The similarities between the two pitchers begin with the vibe they generate throughout the stadium when it’s their turn to pitch. There’s a different feeling in the clubhouse on a Skenes or Skubal day because of how games play out when they’re on the mound.

“You just know the other team isn’t going to do very much,” Tigers infielder Zach McKinstry said when it’s a Skubal day. “Defense is kind of boring that game.”

As a smiling teammate Spencer Torkelson added, “You can almost be blindfolded playing behind him.”

Pirates outfielder Tommy Pham has his own way of recognizing when Pittsburgh’s ace is pitching. It begins when Pham gets dressed to come to the park.

“He wears a suit to the field, so I started trying to keep up with him on ‘Skenes Day,'” Pham said. “I call out Skenes Day by wearing a suit with him so he’s not the only one.

“And we normally don’t need to score a lot of runs that day.”

Despite Skenes’ formal attire and nasty stuff, it stands out to his teammates that Skenes is still approachable when it is his day to take the mound.

“He’s a guy that you can talk to when he’s starting,” Pham stated. “I’ve played with guys, when they’re starting, you can’t talk to them, which I feel is bulls—. But he’s not like that.”

Skubal exhibits that trait, as well, according to Detroit infielder Zach McKinstry. Skubal will talk to teammates like it’s any other game.

The confidence in each pitcher’s crafts allows for a normal day, according to the players in both locker rooms.

The Tigers also get an extra jolt of energy during their pennant race as they play meaningful games down the stretch: Comerica Park comes alive when their ace takes the mound.

“Every jersey you see is a No. 29 jersey,” McKinstry said. “They love him. And he loves what he does. And we love to play behind him.”

‘We play a defensive position, but he makes it look like offense’

If there is one difference between Skubal and Skenes, it is that Skubal is in attack mode more than anyone in the league. He leads MLB in throwing his first pitch for a strike at 70% of the time. Overall, he throws strikes 55% of the time — good for third most in baseball.

Being in the zone so often is one reason Skubal is third in the majors in innings pitched this season, after finishing eighth in that category last season.

“When it gets to those later innings, you do feel like he has a chance to go the distance,” Tigers reliever Will Vest said. “It’s because he’s so efficient with his pitches.”

Skubal has pitched at least seven innings in 10 starts this season, including his signature outing: a 13-strikeout shutout against the Cleveland Guardians on May 25. That performance still resonates in the Tigers’ clubhouse three months later, especially after his last pitch registered at 103 mph.

“The aggressiveness,” Mize explained. “We play a defensive position, but he makes it look like offense. He’s going at everybody. He doesn’t care. That game illustrated that.”

MLB Rank: Updated top 50 »

Skenes, on the other hand, ranks 33rd in first-strike percentage (62.1) with a full arsenal that allows him to attack hitters differently.

“He has a larger tool box,” Pirates assistant pitching coach Brent Strom said. “It enables him to have weapons against different types of hitters. He pitches to his strengths.”

According to Baseball Savant, Skenes has thrown seven different types of pitches this season — as compared with Skubal’s five — and Skenes’ swinging-strike percentage ranks seventh. It all adds up to a pitch mix that keeps hitters baffled, even when they get pitches to hit.

“It’s full-on ‘here it is, hit it,'” Pirates catcher Joey Bart said. “He’s not scared of anyone.”

‘Everything is by the numbers, and he leaves nothing to chance’

Charles LeClaire/Imagn Images

Every player, no matter the position, has a routine to prepare for competition. But Skenes is especially unique in that regard.

One day, between starts, Pham asked to stand in the batter’s box while Skenes threw a bullpen session.

“Then the next day, I asked who’s throwing a pen because I needed to test out my contact lenses again,” Pham explained. “And Skenes says, ‘Hey, I’m throwing a pen.'”

Pham gave him a confused look, knowing Skenes had thrown the day before.

“He’s like, ‘Yeah, I throw every day, except for the day before my start,'” Pham recalled. “When I found that out, I was like, yeah, he’s different. I’ve never seen anybody do that.”

GMs tell their best (and wildest) trade stories

From texts during birth and funerals to the best deadline deals that never happened, MLB front-office execs tell all. Jesse Rogers »

Strom noted that not every bullpen session is built the same. There’s purpose to the preparation.

“His work is very organized,” Strom said. “Very thoughtful. Everything is by the numbers, and he leaves nothing to chance. He’s very cerebral. He understands what’s necessary.”

Bart recalled Skenes’ early days with the club after getting called up in May 2024. The catcher recognized the detailed preparation of the former LSU star even then, including how Skenes readied for his very first outing against the Chicago Cubs.

“I remember the first pregame meeting last year,” Bart said. “He ran the meeting in his debut. I was like, ‘Go ahead and take it, dude. You got it.’ He has been groomed for this.”

That kind of intense and directed preparedness has gained attention and admiration around the league, and it is what Skubal identified as Skenes’ most impressive trait.

“He seems like he has his routine and preparation already figured out at a young age,” Skubal said. “It took me until I was 26 to be a good big league baseball player and figure that out. And he’s doing it at 23. That’s four years faster than me. Yeah, that’s really impressive.”

‘He just wants to show that there is something memorable about greatness’

Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

There’s an aura of self-assuredness to Skubal that stands out as compared with even other aces, according to those around him. He has been called a “bulldog” with a “killer” mentality by his teammates: He won’t back down, no matter the circumstance.

“He comes after you,” Torkelson said. “In big situations, he trusts his best stuff. You kind of know what you’re going to get, and it’s still hard to hit.”

That confidence enables Skubal to put himself in pitcher’s counts (0-1, 0-2, 1-2, 2-2) 45.7% of the time, more than any other hurler in the game, according to ESPN Research. And until you show you can hit one of his best offers, he’ll just keep throwing it. He has 93 strikeouts on his changeup, second only to Philadelphia Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez.

MLB Playoff Tiers

From the locks to the long shots, here’s how sure we are that your team will be playing in October.
David Schoenfield »

That mindset is what stands out most about Skubal to Skenes.

“He can go after hitters straight up,” Skenes said. “He gets them out quickly, which is why he pitches deep in games. He does that better than anyone else in the game. But it starts with going right at them. That takes confidence.”

Skubal has a commanding presence, according to Tigers play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti. It doesn’t hurt that his size (6-foot-3 and 240 pounds) naturally creates some intimidation when he is on the mound, but he makes himself known whenever he is in the game.

“On the day the All-Stars were announced last year, the Tigers were in Cincinnati, and he struck out [Elly] De La Cruz and there was this big primal scream — and that’s this indelible memory for me,” Benetti said of Skubal. “Because that is a guy that people hear about that there’s noise about, and he wants that.

“He ends innings and outings at 102 mph because he just wants to show that there is something memorable about greatness, is the way I would put it. He has greatness.”

Bitcoin Bull Run Finished? $172 Million Mystery Whale Thinks Opposite

by admin August 19, 2025

The past few days have been rough for Bitcoin (BTC) on the chart. The price dropped back to the $115,000 range after not being able to hold its August high of $123,000. But looking at Onchain Lens records, it seems someone is secretly building one of the biggest positions seen this month.

One wallet connected to FalconX inflows has been getting Bitcoin at a rate that looks more like a calculated plan than just chance. Just yesterday, it received 300 BTC, which is almost $35 million. That brings its total for the last 30 days to over 1,500 BTC, which is about $176 million.

Every few days, the address lights up again, showing another transfer, with amounts ranging from 100 to 160 BTC. It is like a faucet is being turned on at regular intervals.

Whales are accumulating $BTC from #FalconX.

Another address on the same trail is close behind. Earlier this week, it received 210 BTC, worth about $24.3 million, but that was just part of a bigger trend. In just the last 10 days, it raked in almost 467 BTC, which is about $54 million. Most of those coins came straight from FalconX.

So, is bull run unfinished?

The timing of these transfers — which are happening at the same time as prices are dropping — suggests that someone is willing to take the other side of the market when sentiment is thinning out.

Bitcoin’s chart is not very encouraging right now, but whale behavior often follows a different timeline. While retail flows out and funding data show some nervousness, these quiet accumulations suggest that the big players either see value in the dip or have a horizon that goes beyond short-term volatility.

Either way, $172 million in new Bitcoin money going into just two accounts is hard to ignore.

Spotify now lets you create seamless transitions between songs on your custom playlists

by admin August 19, 2025

Spotify routinely debuts new playlist features for its users, but the company’s latest update has the potential to dramatically alter custom mixes. Starting today, premium users will have access to a new tool for creating customized transitions within playlists. This will allow seamless progression from one track to the next, with natural-sounding changeovers and no awkward silence.

Once you’ve created a playlist, you’ll notice a Mix option on the toolbar. When selected, the tool gives you the option to pick Auto and allow Spotify to instantly make the transitions, or you can tap in further to customize things as you see fit. From there, you can choose presets like Fade or Rise to quickly apply transition styles or try specific changes to volume, EQ and effects. The app will display a waveform for the two songs, helping you select the best place to make the swap.

After making your transitions, you can save them for future use or for sharing with friends. And speaking of friends, the transition editor is available for collaboration on any playlists you build with your pals. Spotify allows you to toggle the Mix option on and off at any time, so you’re free to listen without any of that creative customization if needed.

To help you create a playlist that’s ready for mixing, Spotify will show you the tempo in BPMs (beats per minute) and Camelot keys for each song once you tap Mix. The company reminds users that the best options for this tool are songs that were created for seamless transitions, so genres like house and techno will provide the best results. Spotify also recommends using the Mix tool for making running playlists with consistent BPMs to help with pace or to create roadtrip playlists that can maintain “the vibe.” Lastly, you can create your own cover art for mixed playlists using Spotify’s built-in editor that debuted last fall.

Japanese 3D Housing Firm Plans Bitcoin Buy After NFT Housing Initiative

by admin August 19, 2025

Japan-based 3D printed housing firm Lib Work Co. has become the latest non-crypto native company to buy Bitcoin for its corporate treasury, coming just a month after launching an initiative that uses non-fungible tokens to store house designs.

In a Monday statement following its board meeting, Lib Work announced plans to purchase 500 million Japanese yen ($3.3 million) worth of Bitcoin (BTC) as a hedge against “inflationary trends” in Japan and the risks of “holding assets only in cash.”

“Therefore, our company has decided to adopt a phased approach to acquisition and holding, in response to these risks and to prepare for future growth areas with overseas operators,” the firm said.

Three-month Bitcoin buying spree

Lib Work will buy Bitcoin in a series of purchases from crypto exchanges starting in September and continuing until December, while also establishing a risk management system, according to its statement.

At current prices, one Bitcoin is worth around $115,377, meaning the company could buy roughly 28 for $3.3 million, making it 105 on the list of top Bitcoin treasury companies, overtaking French payment provider BD multimedia.

Source: Lib Work Co.

It comes only a month after Lib Work launched an NFT-backed 3D printed housing initiative to store blueprints on the blockchain and use Bitcoin as a payment method.

First NFT house blueprint goes live

Lib Work said in a July 25 statement that one of its house designs, a Lib Earth House Model B, was issued as an NFT and aims to protect the intellectual property and to act as an ownership certificate linked to the physical home.

The NFT can store the house’s ID, history, and ownership information on the blockchain to ensure buyers hold exclusive design rights and prevent unauthorized blueprint plagiarism.

“Because 3D printed houses are based on digital designs, protecting the rights to these design files and managing their licenses is essential,” Lib Work said.

“Currently, blockchain technology and NFTs are expanding beyond the art and music industries into real estate and intellectual property sectors.”

NFT blueprints could help solve building challenges

In recent years, the construction industry has faced labor shortages and soaring material costs, which, according to Lib Work, show the “limitations of traditional construction methods.”

Related: Strategy adds $51M in Bitcoin as price hit $124K ahead of sharp dip

The company said 3D printing construction methods and asset digitalization could help solve some of these challenges by reducing labor, time, costs and “creating new international housing markets for the metaverse and Web3 era.”

“By creating NFTs for 3D printed houses, Lib Work will build new housing distribution mechanisms for investors and users worldwide, actively promoting international brand value and expansion into new markets.”

Lib Work was founded on Aug. 1, 1997. The firm changed its name in April 2018 and started focusing on building 3D printed homes.

It mainly sells detached houses and real estate using the internet and virtual reality, according to its company profile.

Ethereum Maxis Distressed as Validator Exit Queue Hits Record 910k ETH

by admin August 19, 2025

The Ethereum Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network is seeing all-time high activity in its validator queues, with the exit queue presently reaching 910k Ethereum (ETH), worth approximately $3.8 billion.

According to the tracking site Validator Queue, withdrawals are expected to take around 15 days and 16 hours, marking one of the longest waiting times to date. On August 14, Ethereum’s validator exit queue was nearly at 700,000 ETH, valued at about $3.29 billion.

The exit queue refers to the queue of waiting validators that are about to withdraw staked ETH, and the entry queue represents those queuing to stake and enter the network.

Alongside the exits, new deposits continue to flow in. The entry queue currently holds about 260,185 ETH, valued at approximately $1.1 billion. They are anticipated to become active in around 4 days and 12 hours, indicating that despite heavy withdrawals, new money is still coming into the network.

At the time, institutional demand and long-term investors are sustaining the entry queue, helping maintain balance in the staking system.

Statistics also indicate that the Ethereum PoS network has more than 1.082 million active validators and a total of 35.5 million ETH staked, accounting for 29.38% of the entire ETH supply. The current staking rewards are averaging 2.95% annually (APR).

Ethereum’s Gigantic Gains this Year

The increase in the exit queue comes after Ethereum’s steep price rally in recent months, which has seen most validators unlock funds and take profits. Ethereum (ETH) is currently trading at $4,243.23, which surged as high as $4,784 this month. It has rallied over 223% since April lows below $1,500—as per CoinMarketCap data.

The cryptocurrency’s current market capitalization is $509.19 billion, with a trading volume of $47.83 billion within the last 24 hours.

Last Chance to Play Battlefield 6 Open Beta is This Weekend

by admin August 19, 2025

EA’s DICE studio has blown the lid off the multiplayer for its upcoming military shooter Battlefield 6 and held a beta to give players a taste of the game and generate feedback. Battlefield 6’s first public beta was available to everyone, but after an early release and two weekends of play, it has officially ended.

The Battlefield 6 open beta was the first chance for players to experience the game’s multiplayer before its full release on Oct. 10. Those with early access got a couple extra days to play and both of the open beta weekends were a rousing success, finally ending in the early hours of Monday, Aug. 18 (1 a.m. PT, to be precise).

Fans could visit Battlefield’s website to get info about the open beta, which required linking your EA account to your platform account. PC players also had to configure their system to Secure Boot as well (see below).

The beta was playable on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S.

When did the Battlefield 6 beta end? What were the dates and times?

The Battlefield 6 open beta ran through August 18 at 1am PT.

  • Aug. 7-8: Early access.
  • Aug. 9-10: First open beta weekend available to all.
  • Aug. 14-17: Second open beta weekend available to all, starting at 1 a.m. PT on Aug. 14 and closing Aug. 18 at 1 a.m. PT.

How to access the Battlefield 6 open beta

As this was an open beta, getting access was pretty easy. Players could simply download the Battlefield 6 beta client from their preferred platform, including the PS5, Xbox Series X and S, Steam, Epic Games Store or the EA app.

Preloading the Battlefield 6 beta started on Aug. 4. Doing a preload meant you’d be able to jump on the beta as soon as it was available instead of waiting for it to download on the day of access.

Battlefield 6 open beta download links

Here are the BF6 Beta download links for each platform:

Battlefield 6 beta maps

EA revealed the rotation of maps for the Battlefield 6 open beta weekends.

The maps for the upcoming Battlefield 6 open beta.

EA

For the first weekend of Aug. 9-10, the maps were:

  • Liberation Peak: A large, mountainous desert with broad slopes and military forts, as well as ground and aerial vehicles.
  • Siege of Cairo: An urban battlefield in the heart of Egypt with tight buildings, wide boulevards and ground vehicles.
  • Iberian Offensive: A cluster of village buildings for tight squad combat while holding street squares for objectives.

The second weekend of Aug. 14-17 included the first weekend maps, plus:

  • Empire State: A close-quarters NYC map with fierce fighting in alleyways and room-to-room firefights in buildings under construction.

Battlefield 6 beta game modes

Just like with the maps, each weekend also featured certain game modes.

The modes for the first weekend were:

  • Conquest
  • Closed Weapons Conquest
  • Domination
  • King of the Hill
  • Breakthrough

Then on the second weekend of the beta, the previous modes were included along with:

  • Rush
  • Squad Deathmatch
  • Attack & Defend playlist (Breakthrough, Rush)
  • Close Quarters playlist (Domination, King of the Hill, Squad Deathmatch)
  • All-Out Warfare playlist (Conquest, Breakthrough, Rush)
  • Closed Weapons All-Out Warfare playlist (Conquest, Breakthrough)

PC-specific notice for Battlefield 6 beta

A special note if you haven’t played a Battlefield game on PC recently: Studio DICE and EA recently started requiring players to set their computers to Secure Boot when playing Battlefield games to combat cheaters, and Battlefield 6 is no different. To even play the open beta, you needed to delve into your BIOS and switch your PC to Secure Boot. Check EA’s guide for help.

U.K. 30-Year Yield Tops U.S. as Pressure Mounts on Government Borrowing

by admin August 19, 2025

The U.K.’s fragile fiscal situation is back in focus as yields on long-term government bonds surged, topping their U.S. counterparts for the first time this century.

The 30-year U.K. government bond offered a yield of 5.61% at press time. That’s 68 basis points more than the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield according to data source TradingView.

The widening gap means that the market is demanding a significant premium to hold U.K. debt versus Treasury notes, a sign that investors are becoming increasingly wary about the U.K.’s fiscal situation.

The U.K. gilt market (bond market) has taken on a life of its own, as the country faces structural, long-term economic challenges that it has built up over decades; yet, this is not a uniquely British issue. Japan, the EU, and the U.S. have also seen bond yields rise as debt burdens and inflation pressures mount.

This indebtedness of the advanced world supports the bullish case for perceived store-of-value assets like bitcoin

and gold.

Focus on U.K. inflation report

Wednesday’s U.K. inflation report is critical for bond markets.

The data is expected to show that both the headline consumer price index (CPI) and core CPI remained well above the 2% target in July, according to data source Trading Economics. The headline CPI is expected to be 3.7% year-over-year (up from the previous 3.6%), while core inflation is forecast to remain at 3.7% (unchanged from the prior month). The data will hit the wires just weeks after the Bank of England cut rates to 4%.

Expectations for sticky inflation couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the GDP growth has weakened and unemployment has begun to edge higher from secular lows.

Repeat of 2022 crisis?

A hot inflation report could only worsen the debt-bond dynamics by accelerating the uptrend in yields. This calls for both crypto and traditional market traders to remain vigilant for a 2022-style volatility in the U.K. markets.

The hardening of the 30-year gilt yield, representing the long end of the curve, played a big role in the liability-driven investment (LDI) pension crisis of 2022, which erupted under Liz Truss. The longer duration yield is now testing the upper bound of a long-term trend and could rise to 5.7%, the highest level since May 1998.

LDI strategies use leverage to hedge pension liabilities. When gilt yields spiked in 2022, collateral calls led to a mass sale of gilts, creating a feedback loop that threatened financial stability. That prompted the Bank of England to intervene with emergency purchases to prevent a systemic crisis.

If Wednesday’s inflation report runs hotter than expected, gilt yields could break new highs, putting further pressure on the government and raising the risk of another LDI-style crisis.
