Xbox PC Gaming Handheld Gets October Release Date But No Price

by admin August 21, 2025

Microsoft has officially announced the release date for its handheld gaming PCs, the ROG Xbox Ally and indeed the even more bemusingly named ROG Xbox Ally X. Both devices will be available on October 16, but maddeningly, we still don’t know a price. However, we have learned that the portable gaming machine is going to feature its own equivalent of Valve’s Steam Deck verification system.

Microsoft and ROG’s team-up is a sort of stop-gap attempt at a portable Xbox, a concept Microsoft has recently be touting in ambiguous terms. This crossover with the already popular ROG Ally Windows 11 machine sees the device rebranded with Xbox buttons and, more importantly, with a new UI that should make it reasonably simple to play your Game Pass, GOG, and Steam games on the subway.

Today, Microsoft has made its release date official, declaring that on October 16 we’ll be able to get hold of both models, with pre-orders due “in the coming weeks.” Despite this, we still don’t have a price for either model. However, rumors about the potential cost continue to appear—see below.

The current ROG Ally comes with an AMD Ryzen Z1 processor, and costs $650. However, the basic Xbox version will be a step up, featuring the brand-new Ryzen Z2 with “four Zen 2 cores with eight threads and eight RDNA 2 GPU cores,” which sure sounds like a lot of threads and cores. It’ll also have 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD (which isn’t close to enough–that’s like two Calls of Duty). Meanwhile, the Ally X will beef that up to an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, which as you can see both has AI and is extreme. It features “a new 8‑core/16‑thread Zen 5 APU with 16 RDNA 3.5 GPU cores and an integrated 50 TOPS NPU,” and let’s all pretend we know what that means and feel impressed. It also bumps the RAM up to 24GB, and offers a 1TB SSD for up to four Calls of Duty at a time.

Xbox Ally has its own improved take on “Steam Deck Verified”

When Valve’s Steam Deck released, the company attempted to create a system, called Steam Deck Verified, that’d let owners know if a game on Steam was likely to be able to run on the handheld. It’s been sort-of useful over the years, although too often compromised by some games getting “Verified” status despite requiring super-low settings. It’s less and less useful these days, but then the Steam Deck is aging out. Microsoft is attempting something similar for the ROG Xbox Ally, with a system called the Handheld Compatibility Program, which the company says will “optimize thousands of PC titles for handheld compatibility” to “ensure day-one users have the best experience possible.” The system’s labels will have two tiers, “Mostly Compatible” and “Handheld Optimized.”

“Handheld Optimized means that the game is ready to go—with default controller inputs, an intuitive text input method, accurate iconography, clear text legibility, and appropriate resolution in full-screen mode. Mostly Compatible means that the game may require minor in-game setting changes for an optimal experience on handheld.”

Another neat feature is that the device will preload shaders while you’re downloading a game, so you won’t have to sit through a minutes-long loading bar the first time you launch a game after you already thought it was ready. The AI is being used for upscaling antics, and for the more dubious-sounding “Highlight Reels,” where it’ll capture what it considers to be “standout gameplay moments” and create shareable clips. It’ll be fun to see what nonsense that generates.

Microsoft says they’ve already got Gears of War: Reloaded running on the new handheld, which is an impressive boast.

Price rumors are already out there

According to an IGN report, Microsoft says it can’t announce prices yet because of “macro-economic conditions,” which is a bold claim considering the release date is in less than two months. You might assume the devices are already built at this stage, so the cost is not going to surprise the corporation. Clearly implying that Trump’s tariff jazz is a factor, an ASUS rep told IGN, “I think we will have to…we need more time to figure the macro-economic impact to pricing, and that’s why we’ll be sharing more later, in September and October.”

Reliable leaker billbil-kun is claiming to have the figures, however, stating the regular ROG Xbox Ally will be $549.99, while the ROG Xbox Ally X will be a mighty $899.99.

🚨 PRICING ALERT 🚨

Here are the final prices of Xbox Handheld consoles in USD:

🔸 ROG Xbox Ally: 549.99 USD
🔹 ROG Xbox Ally X: 899.99 USD pic.twitter.com/8sz1DKGFY7

— billbil-kun (@billbil_kun) August 20, 2025

$550 does seem low for the basic version, given the current ROG Ally is $650 and runs on an older generation of tech. However, it’s possible that Microsoft could be eating a lot of the costs to get the handheld out there and competitive. The company is said to have never made a single cent from the sale of Xbox consoles, instead relying on software and subscription sales to make up for the losses. Given the ROG Xbox Ally will essentially be a portable Xbox store, it’s very possible the company will be looking to make its money through sales, and of course the Game Pass Premium subscriptions that’ll make the machine worthwhile. At the same time, serious PC players will recognize that 16GB RAM is at the very lowest end of what’s useful these days, so will be tempted to lean toward the far more expensive Ally X to get that 24GB RAM and its considerably faster innards.

Given Microsoft and ROG will want a decent runway for pre-orders ahead of release, it does seem slightly unlikely that we’ll not get an official price before October. Expect that to appear in a couple of weeks, I’d reckon.

Trippy Image From Deep Space Shows Earth and Moon From 180 Million Miles Away

by admin August 21, 2025

The Psyche spacecraft is on a six-year journey to reach a metal-rich asteroid by the same name. Well into its voyage, the probe looked back at its home planet and captured a rare view of Earth, accompanied by its Moon, as a mere speck engulfed by the dark void of space.

NASA’s Psyche mission launched on October 13, 2023, and is assigned to explore a distant target in the main asteroid belt that’s believed to be the exposed core of a protoplanet. Before it reaches its destination, the imaging team behind the mission is testing the spacecraft’s ability to capture objects that shine by light reflected from the Sun. The target objects of these tests are awfully familiar—our very own planet and moon—but they were taken from a rather unfamiliar perspective.

In July, scientists on the imaging team snapped multiple, long-exposure photos of Earth and the Moon. The pair is seen amidst a dark background littered with several stars in the constellation Aries. Earth appears as a bright dot, with the Moon sitting right above it. The image was taken from about 180 million miles (290 kilometers) away and offers a rare look at our planet as seen from deep space.

The photo brings the famous Pale Blue Dot to mind, an image of Earth captured by the Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1990. That image was taken from a distance of 3.7 billion miles (6 billion kilometers), with Earth appearing as a mere speck amid the cosmic backdrop.

Although it wasn’t captured from the same distance, Psyche’s recent image is a similar reminder of Earth’s place and size in the solar system. The spacecraft is equipped with a pair of cameras, designed to collect pictures in wavelengths of light that are both visible and invisible to the human eye, to help determine the composition of the metal-rich asteroid.

Psyche needs to travel a total of around 2.2 billion miles to reach the main asteroid belt and enter asteroid Psyche’s orbit in late July 2029. The 173-mile-wide (280-kilometer) asteroid orbits the Sun in the outer part of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Scientists believe the space rock might be an exposed core of a planetesimal, or an early planetary building block, which was stripped of its outer layer during the early formation of the solar system.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond officially ESRB rated, sparking hope for release date news

by admin August 21, 2025

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has received its official ESRB rating, sparking hope that release date news is on the way soon.

Now updated on the US eShop, Metroid Prime 4 has received a Teen rating, with animated blood and violence. In the UK, it has a provisional PEGI 12. These ratings are the same as Metroid Prime Remastered.

Back in July the game popped up on the Korean ratings board, but still we don’t have a release date beyond 2025.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – Nintendo Direct 3.27.2025Watch on YouTube

Earlier this month, Nintendo reiterated the latest in its beloved sci-fi series would still launch this year, despite rumours of a delay.

That followed a poster for the game appearing on the London Underground stating, incorrectly, that it was “out now”.

Metroid Prime 4 will be released across both Switch and Switch 2, with the latter being a prime example of the console’s varied control capabilities – including mouse mode.

This is a news-in-brief story. This is part of our vision to bring you all the big news as part of a daily live report.

Coinbase CEO predicts Bitcoin will hit $1million by 2030

by admin August 21, 2025

The CEO of Coinbase has shared a bullish long-term target for Bitcoin, predicting the cryptocurrency’s price could be worth a million dollars in the coming years.

Summary

  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is bullish on Bitcoin’s long-term potential.
  • Armstrong points to regulatory developments, including the GENIUS Stablecoin Act, as evidence of increasing market clarity.
  • Other industry figures, including Michael Saylor and Cathie Wood, also project Bitcoin reaching $1 million or more by 2030.

Speaking on the Cheeky Pint podcast recently, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong expressed his belief in Bitcoin’s (BTC) long-term potential to reach the $1 million price point by 2030.

“The rough idea I have in my head is that we will see a million-dollar Bitcoin by 2030,” he said, responding to host John Collison’s question about his price expectations.

Armstrong pointed to shifting regulatory scenes and growing institutional demand as key drivers of his predictions. He noted that the recent passage of pro-crypto legislation, including the GENIUS Stablecoin Act and other key market structure bills under review in Congress, signals growing clarity for the industry, a reality that was once seemed a distant dream.

I think we’ll see $1M per bitcoin by 2030.

Regulatory clarity is finally emerging, the US government is keeping a BTC reserve, there’s a growing interest for crypto ETFs, among many other factors.

(Not financial advice of course, it’s impossible to guarantee) pic.twitter.com/w5EfcYFvVp

— Brian Armstrong (@brian_armstrong) August 20, 2025

“We’re starting to see regulatory clarity emerge in the U.S senate,” he added. The CEO also pointed to the adoption of a Bitcoin reserve by the U.S, as well as the broader trend among several governments globally. He stressed that these developments mark a new milestone, removing uncertainties that once clouded the industry’s long-term outlook.

Growing institutional demand from corporate entities and exchange-traded funds is another key driver of his forecast. With the success of Bitcoin ETFs and traditional financial institutions now betting on the asset, Armstrong added that these channels have become a gateway for mainstream investors, and continued inflows of capital are expected to push prices higher.

Coinbase CEO’s BTC price target aligns with other bullish calls

Armstrong is not alone in making long-term calls for Bitcoin. Other industry figures, including Strategy’s Michael Saylor, have made similar projections. Earlier in June, Saylor cited rising institutional demand and limited supply as catalysts for BTC climbing to the $1 million mark.

Cathie Wood of ARK Invest has set an even higher price target of $1.5 million for BTC by 2030, exceeding Coinbase CEO Armstrong’s forecast. These predictions share common ground, with expectations that Bitcoin adoption will continue to grow, solidifying its role as a global store of value.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin has traded sideways over the past week. Since failing to sustain the rally that pushed it to a new all-time high above $124,000, the asset has struggled to maintain momentum. At the time of writing, BTC sits just under $113,368 according to market data from crypto.news, down 0.29% on the day and roughly 6.8% over the past seven days.

Scammer Impersonates UK Police to Steal Bitcoin Worth $2.8M

by admin August 21, 2025

The Welsh police are investigating a theft in which the scammer posed as a senior UK police officer and stole Bitcoin (BTC) worth approximately $2.8 million. The cyber team of the North Wales police stated that this theft was part of an ongoing trend where scammers target cold wallets of long-term cryptocurrency holders.

As per a Facebook post from NWP Cyber Crime Department, the scammer won the confidence of the victim by claiming that his details had been found on the phone of someone who was recently arrested and asked the victim to secure their funds via a phishing link. After gaining total control of the wallet, the scammer withdrew $2.8 million worth of BTC immediately.

“Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics,” the North Wales police said, “They are not just targeting new investors; they are crafting sophisticated social engineering schemes to trick even the most diligent holders.”

The police stated that through fear and urgency tactics used by most digital thieves, the victim was compelled to enter their seed phrase, which resulted in the diversion of funds to a sophisticated but fraudulent site. The police are now trying to trace and recover the funds, meanwhile recommending the masses to stay alert.

Police Share Advisories for Business and People

With the number of scams on the rise globally, authorities worldwide have been sharing advisories. Earlier this year, the UK police urged the public to be more vigilant against cyber crimes. They stated, “Police will NEVER call you unexpectedly to discuss your crypto assets or ask you to take action on your cold storage device. This is a big red flag.”

Moreover, earlier this month, the FBI also warned that the scammers are impersonating law agencies to contact victims of previous crypto scams and asked the public to report the scams at the earliest.

Ricoh Announces Updated Version of My Favorite Travel Camera

by admin August 21, 2025

With pocket camera popularity on the rise, Ricoh has announced the GR IV, an updated version of its excellent, diminutive (and quite old) GR III. It’s a fixed-lens camera that can easily fit in a pocket, but inside is a big APS-C image sensor — far larger than what you can get in a phone. Larger image sensors typically mean better image quality compared to smaller sensors.

I really liked the GR III and picked it as the best point-and-shoot camera for travel. The images it captured were better, especially in low light, than most of the other small cameras I tested. However, it felt quite dated. The new GR IV, on paper at least, seems to improve on many of the GR III’s more aged aspects but keeps the vast majority of the camera the same. That’s generally a good thing.

Big sensor, little camera

Ricoh

  • 25.7-megapixel images (6,192×4,128)
  • 18.3mm f/2.8 lens (28mm in 35mm equivalent)
  • 1080p/60 video
  • 5-axis image stabilization
  • Faster startup compared to previous GR cameras (claimed to be 0.6 seconds)
  • Built-in ND filter (2 stops)
  • 53GB internal storage (also microSD)
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3

The two benefits of the GR III and its predecessors carry over to the GR IV: It’s an extremely small camera with a big image sensor. The body is 4.3 by 2.4 by 1.3 inches, which is roughly the same width as a smartphone, thicker but shorter. It should fit easily in most pockets. The IV is very slightly smaller than the GR III.

Again, inside is a new APS-C-sized image sensor, though it’s the same size used in the GR III and basically the same resolution. Ricoh says it has “higher sensitivity and reduced noise” compared to the sensor in the GR III. It would have been great to see a higher-resolution sensor, allowing for more detail when cropping in on an image, considering the GR IV has a fixed, wide-angle lens.

Ricoh

That lens is an all-new design, with an 18.3mm focal length (equivalent to 28mm). That matches the GR III, as does its f2.8 aperture. This is on the narrow end of what’s typically considered a wide-angle lens, but it’s similar to the field of view of the main cameras on most smartphones. Ricoh says the lens’s glass elements allow for “edge-to-edge sharpness.”

The GR IV has 5-axis shake reduction, up from 3-axis on the GR III, to help reduce blurriness during longer shutter speeds. Ricoh says this offers up to six stops of stabilization. This, along with the higher sensitivity of the image sensor, could mean the GR IV does really well in low light.

Ricoh

Along with the launch of the GR IV, Ricoh has announced several accessories, most notably a compact flash that connects via the hot shoe on top of the camera. After years of cameras trying to reduce the need for flashes, the resurgence of retro digital cameras and their aesthetic is bringing them back. Additionally, there will be some cosmetic alternatives, including a metal hot shoe cover, plus a wrist strap (pictured in the top image) and a lens adapter to fit the GW-4 wide conversion lens that’s currently available for the GR III.

Should you wait for the GR IV?

Ricoh

On paper, the updates to the GR IV seem fairly mild. Same overall design, same resolution, same focal length. However, there’s definitely an “if ain’t broke, don’t fix it” aspect to all of that. The GR III worked great, creating high-quality images in a pocket-size camera. It’s often said the best camera is the one you have with you, and it was very easy to have the GR III with you.

The new lens, image sensor and stabilization could be solid upgrades. I won’t know until I test the GR IV (likely next month when it launches). I’m a little disappointed it’s not higher resolution. That’s not a huge deal, but I’ve been using a fixed-lens camera for several months now as my main camera, and being able to crop in on the 40MP images has come in handy. Then again, if I were in a situation where I wanted to capture something in the distance, I’d usually just use the telephoto on my Pixel 9 Pro.

If you’re interested in a GR camera, I’d recommend waiting a few weeks if you can. Either the GR IV will be a worthy upgrade and worth getting, or it will just be a minor improvement and the older, and likely cheaper, GR III will be the better option. The Ricoh GR IV will be available in mid-September for $1,500.

Adin Ross demands immediate Kick changes after Jean Pormanove death

by admin August 21, 2025

Adin Ross has urged Kick to “do better” amid the death of streamer Jean Pormanove following the banning of all streamers who had been involved.

On August 18, Raphaël Graven, better known online as Jean Pormanove died in his sleep while streaming live on Kick. It followed the 46-year-old reportedly being subjected to “ten days of torture” from streamers Naruto and Safine. Clips have circulated showing Graven being choked and shot with paintballs, among other ‘punishments’.

Since the death of the streamer, both Naruto and Safine have been banned from Kick. The French government has also opened an investigation into the livestreaming platform, with Clara Chappaz, France’s minister for digital affairs and AI, criticizing the lack of intervention from Kick.

Adin Ross, who owns a part of Kick, has also weighed in, calling the situation “heartbreaking” and urging the platform to “do better” moving forward.

Adin Ross calls for immediate rule changes on Kick

“This is horrible, this is a f*cked up situation,” the Kick streamer said. “Kick is being heavily investigated. Whoever was streaming is being heavily investigated. I know that the police are getting involved, governments are getting involved, and justice for Jean is what’s needed.”

“No amount of money brings back a life that was a streamer who happened to stream on my platform, on Kick. It’s absolutely f*cking horrible and very disturbing,” he continued.

“Kick as a whole needs to do better, straight up. I think that there needs to be some type of policy change, certain Kick staff need to be held accountable, moderation need to be held accountable, and there needs to be change immediately.”

Shiba Inu Bulls Defend Dual Support With 1T Volume

by admin August 21, 2025

Shiba Inu

has gained over 2% in the past 24 hours, with bulls defending key support levels on the back of strong volumes.

The meme cryptocurrency fell early Wednesday as BTC and the broader market witnessed de-risking ahead of Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s impending speech.

Buyers, however, stepped in closer to the $0.00001200 level, ensuring that the psychological support was maintained. The subsequent recovery also lifted prices back above the ascending trendline connecting June 22 and Aug. 2 lows, and the key level of $0.00001231, which is the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement of the June-July rally.

SHIB. (TradingView)

Bulls fuel SHIB comeback

SHIB shakes off volatility, powers from $0.000012295 to $0.000012574 close on heavy bullish flow. Token holds critical support, smashes through resistance barriers. Next target: $0.000012700 psychological level.

According to CoinDesk’s AI technical insights model, $0.000012700 is the next level to beat for the bulls.

Technical data points to a bullish breakout

  • SHIB traded within a $0.000012089-$0.000012705 range, which represents a 5% spread between session extremes.
  • Institutional interest peaked between 13:00 and 14:00, andvolume surged past 1 trillion tokens.
  • The price held above $0.000012250, confirming a strong demand floor.
  • Mid-session selling pressure at 13:00 failed to crack $0.000012089 support.
  • Resistance at $0.000012600 was penetrated, triggering a volume surge to 12.8 billion tokens.
CD20 Index Holds Steady Amid Token Volatility

CD20 maintained range-bound trading as SHIB volatility spiked. The Index reflected institutional selectivity across major crypto holdings, with the broader market confidence persisting despite individual token swings and near-term uncertainty.

Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter Switch 2 Upgrade Pack Is One Whole Dollar

by admin August 21, 2025

The upcoming remake of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 edition. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter’s Switch 2 edition is a digital-only release, but the Switch physical edition can be upgraded to Switch 2 for one whole dollar. Preorders for the physical edition of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter are available for PS5 and Nintendo Switch. The highly anticipated turn-based RPG launches September 19 for $60.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter features entirely overhauled 3D visuals, new voice acting, turn-based and real-time battle systems, and a bunch of new side quests and regions. Widely regarded as one of the best entries in Nihon Falcom’s sprawling catalog of Trails games, Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter should be the ideal entry point for newcomers and a welcome treat for longtime fans.

$60 | Releases September 19

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter’s physical edition is up for preorder at Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Best Buy.

As mentioned, the Nintendo Switch 2 edition is only available on the eShop, but Switch owners can upgrade their copy–physical or digital–for only $1. The Switch 2 edition has higher resolution and frame rates as well as faster load times.

If you’re unsure if you want to preorder the remake, we’d recommend checking out Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter’s Prologue Demo, which released August 21. The demo is available to play now on PlayStation 5 and PC, and the Switch version should be downloadable soon. The progress you make in the demo can be transferred to the full game.

Returning players will probably be happy to learn the remake could take twice as long to beat. In an interview with the Japanese gaming publication Gamer, Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo discussed how the 3D game world, new voice acting, and other updates naturally add to the game’s length. Playthrough times for Trails games can vary significantly from one player to the next, but if it took you 40 hours to complete the original, it might take you closer to 80 in the remake.

Trails in the Sky originally released on PC in Japan in 2004. The English localization debuted on PlayStation Portable in 2006. Subsequent ports and enhanced editions for PS3 and Vita were exclusive to Japan. A worldwide Steam port released in 2014, and this edition is still sold today (for $20). For reference, Trails in the Sky has a “Very Positive” review average based on over 6,000 Steam reviews.

Nihon Falcom’s Legend of Heroes franchise dates back to 1989, but the 2004 release of Trails in the Sky marked the beginning of the modern “Trails” series. More than a dozen Trails games have been released over the past 20 years. While there are numerous arcs within the Trails series–Trails of Cold Steel, Trails through Daybreak, etc.–playing Trails in the Sky and its two sequels is highly recommended to fully appreciate the franchise’s excellent worldbuilding and lore.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Trails in the Sky follows adoptive siblings Joshua and Estelle Bright, who join the Bracers peacekeeping organization. They’re soon caught up in an international conspiracy and must join forces with various other characters to thwart a deadly coup. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter was made in the same engine as the Trails through Daybreak duology. And just like the Daybreak games, the remake pairs the franchise’s traditional turn-based combat system with real-time action gameplay.

The next all-new entry in the series, Trails Beyond the Horizon, is scheduled for January 15, 2026. Preorders are available for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. Like many Nihon Falcom games, the $60 Deluxe Edition of Trails Beyond the Horizon will be bundled with multiple goodies (an art book and digital soundtrack).

If you want to check out more Trails games, GameSpot sister site Fanatical has deals on a bunch of them for PC (Steam keys). Fanatical is also offering discounts on multiple games in the Ys series, Nihon Falcom’s long-running action-RPG franchise. Unlike the Trails series, Ys games largely standalone experiences, so you can play them in any order.

Nihon Falcom Games – Physical Editions

Trails through Daybreak II

We also rounded up a list of physical editions for PlayStation and Nintendo consoles that you can still buy for near MSRP or below.

Notable deals include Trails through Daybreak II: Deluxe Edition for PS5 and Nintendo Switch for $35 (was $60). Daybreak II released earlier this year, and this is by far the best price so far. You can also save big on Ys X: Nordics for PS4 or Nintendo Switch. Over at Amazon, Tokyo Xanadu eX+ for Nintendo Switch is up for grabs for $33 (was $50). Tokyo Xanadu isn’t related to Ys or Trails, but it’s an action-RPG that fans of both series would likely enjoy. Keep in mind that Nihon Falcom games generally don’t stay in print for long, and resellers often sell Trails games for far above MSRP.

The Destruction of NASA Would Be a Blow to Our Collective Imagination

by admin August 21, 2025

“It’s just very sad, and it’s kind of pointless,” Rader says. “And I think they’re going to look back at it in a couple of years, maybe less, and go, ‘Oh my gosh, what did we do?’”

No one I spoke to for this piece thinks NASA is literally going away. For one thing, Congress is pushing back on the changes, though the administration seems determined to ram them through one way or another. Instead, what they imagine is a kind of rump agency. “The sense that I got was, it was a very real possibility that NASA could be reduced to something just kind of in name only,” Rader says. “Almost maybe a version of the FAA (the Federal Aviation Administration), but for space.”

“It’s like witnessing a death of an ideal.”

Casey Dreier, space policy chief at the Planetary Society

What’s being undercut isn’t just NASA’s technical ability to carry out missions, although that would be bad enough. It is America’s—and the world’s—capacity to wonder, to believe, to know. “It’s almost like a diminution of our own vision and ambition to say we’re literally, I mean, again, not figuratively, literally, closing our eyes to the cosmos and turning inwards,” says Casey Dreier, the space policy chief at the nonprofit Planetary Society. “It’s like witnessing a death of an ideal.”

That death is already underway. Around 4,000 NASA staffers are scheduled to leave the agency this year, either through what the Trump administration calls “deferred resignation”—a kind of delayed, voluntary layoff—or what NASA is branding “normal attrition,” which includes people like Rader who are leaving of their own accord. That represents about a quarter of the agency’s total staff and includes more than 2,000 senior leaders, according to a report in Politico.

(In a statement, Cheryl Warner, NASA’s news chief, said safety “remains a top priority for our agency as we balance the need to become a more streamlined and more efficient organization and work to ensure we remain fully capable of pursuing a Golden Era of exploration and innovation, including to the moon and Mars.”)

The administration, meanwhile, has proposed a 2026 NASA budget that would slash overall agency spending by 24 percent and science spending specifically by almost half. “This is the largest single-year cut as a percentage ever proposed to NASA,” Dreier says. “It would bring NASA’s overall resources, adjusted for inflation, down to a level not seen since before the first humans went into space in 1961.”

The Trump proposal projects a frozen NASA budget until at least 2030 even as the administration touts a new “golden age of innovation and exploration.” To cap it off, NASA has been without a full-time administrator—the agency’s top official—since January. Sean Duffy, the transportation secretary and a former champion lumberjack and Real World cast member, has been doing double duty in the role on an interim basis since July.

Much has been written about what the proposed budget cuts and job losses will do to NASA. To begin with, they would mean the end of 41 planned or current missions, according to the Planetary Society. Those include an audacious, and long-underway plan to gather pristine soil samples on Mars and return them to earth, a probe exploring the solar system beyond Pluto, and a lander set to catch and study a giant asteroid that will barely miss the earth in 2029. They would also force NASA to essentially get out of the business of tracking climate change.
